etwas andere Golf haha echt geil

I played this game for an hour now and got stuck at the first boss. And I have to say that the game feels pretty unfinished. I've already saw that the developer reads the recensions, so I hope they'll read mine, too. I read that there will be updates, so I'd like to just elaborate on what I experienced so far.

Before I get to that, the good things are the overall presentation, animations, graphics and the music. The game looks very charming and sounds very well, although, I kinda find the music a little bit too... lively for a golf game. There are several costumes for the player character which are really adorable, and one of them even references Yooka-Laylee. I have the feeling I see these guys in every indie game nowadays.

Setting aside from these good things, the gameplay needs a serious overhaul.

The first thing that bothered me was the camera. Before adjusting your shot, you only can move the camera slightly to the left, right, up or down, and for everything else, you need the birdie eye camera, which has a weird overlay that makes finding the right path even more confusing. A clear screen and the ability to place and zoom the camera freely would help a lot. Furthermore, and I disliked this a lot, you can't zoom out while you are adjusting your shot, essentially turning every shot into a gamble.

Then, the ability cards. You can use one of the ability cards to stop the time, so that the ball stops where you want it when you press a button. However, this button press feels very unresponsive; the ball seems to fly a bit further even after you pressed the button, so you need to have quite the reaction time, making this feature feel like a quick time event. There is a card which lets you do a practice shot but I wouldn't find this necessary if you would be able to precisely adjust the shot instead of waiting for the angle line to move to a spot that you want to shoot at. Other golf games like A Little Golf Journey even provide barrier-free settings like the angle line to be always where you want it. I would like this, too. Furthermore, I don't know if I already saw all ability cards but I'd like to have more of them. Not only were they pretty sparse but the effects also don't seem to really help, like the card that makes the ball boomerang after you shot it.

I was also disappointed that there are only three clubs and there even isn't a putter. I don't know how other 2D golf games handle this but using a wedge on the green just feels a bit out of place. I also had the feeling that the game frequently wants you to ricochet the ball off the walls and then go downwards, so you have to take the iron all the time and shoot at minimum strength because the wedge angles too high and the driver is just too powerful.

There's one last thing I read from other users but haven't encountered myself: Mandatory TNT barriers. Apparently, sometimes the RNG doesn't give you a card to destroy them, and if a hole is generated that needs you to destroy the TNT, you have to shoot at it, which lets the ball get launched by the explosion to a random place. Coming back from that takes a toll at your par count.

All in all, this game tries to present itself as difficult but not by giving you a challenge rather than multiple restrictions and chicanes which ultimately turn this game into a chore. Like I said, I got stuck at the first boss because the CPU seems to know everything about the course while I'm struggling to even make one good shot. So, this game really needs polishing and I hope that the developer will take all the suggestions to heart to make a better gaming experience. Until then, I can't recommend this game yet.
