You can find Hundreds of Portraits online and download them for free and even add your own with a simple Screenshot from another game or a Snipping Tool + Windows Paint 3d hence the negative Review.

That being said it's at least fairly cheap and worth getting on a sale i guess but even then that's a stretch.

By my mind, this isn't particularly noteworthy DLC at all. Are the portraits cool? Sure. Is it really worth buying for 2 bucks? If you really want additional portraits I guess.

Ultimately, I'd say that if you get **Baldur's Gate: Faces of Good and Evil** as part of the Beamdog collection here, or as part of another bundle elsewhere, it'll be a nice, but completely useless enhancement for your playthrough(s). I would probably never buy this on its own unless it was like 49 cents.

Although I'm giving this a positive rating here since there's nothing actually wrong with the portrait pack, it'll receive a more appropriate neutral/informational rating on my curator.

If you found this review helpful and would be interested in supporting my Curator group, it would be appreciated. Cheers.

I bought it without reading thinking it was new content. It's just a few portraits. Not refunding because I support Beamdog and the artist

What you see is what you get. If you don't like the portraits in question then don't buy this - and if you think that you shouldn't have to pay for new art portraits because you can get art portraits freely available from the internet also, then think on this: not all artists work is free and there's nothing wrong with an artist making money off his work. Kieran Yanner works as a full time freelance artist - that's his livelihood.

Those portraits look awesome, and happy to send some money Beamdog's way!

They are good quality portraits, however, they currently can't be exported to BG2 which is somewhat disappointing when you intend of finishing the trilogy with your new character.

Only eleven cents more then a bottle of pop for me.

I'm a little down as there are only 6 new images and they don't go BG2. It's basically $2 for a hat, which is a little steep for such an old game, and one that hats are free.

However, I totally want to support this and will change my review to recommend if it works in BG2 in the near future. Also why not IWD compatibility and voices? I'd pay $4 for voices. For a "DLC done right comparison" look at this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yX5nhBQ2XI

Three portraits per gender is hardly 'a world of possibilities', but whatever, about 33 cents a portrait isn't bad.

On the portraits, themselves...

I really like the quality of the 3 female portraits. They look like they fit well with the BG portrait style that many of us are familiar with. That up close and personal, "head-and-shoulder" profile. They are centered well and they do a good job of adding a touch of color for those that might want a few more options for their female protagonists.

Some probably might like them but the males look fairly 'meh' to me, in general. In spite of one grim-looking rogue looking like a good fit, the other two seem somewhat out of place. The art itself looks quite nice but as BG portraits, the angles and depth seem a little odd when compared to the classic BG style. This is mostly because they break that 'up-close' theme I mentioned above, so they look a bit... distant by comparison.

Hey.... you decide if you want to spend $2 on that, I just figured I would offer an opinion on the work itself.

On a personal note, I am glad to have a portrait that I like that can be used for a female monk or some mage with Kura-Tur decent or something. But hey, vote with your wallets, ladies and gents.

Recommended on sale. The portraits are nice and fit well stylistically with the other portraits in the game, and I like being able to support and give credit to the artist. It's also nice to have a few options for non-white player characters. However, the selection's very limited -- only six portraits, all human -- so it's maybe not worth buying unless you have a specific character in mind to use one of them for.

The portraits also don't show up automatically in BG2EE, but you can add them yourself easily by copying the image files from the portraits folder in your BG1EE install directory to My Documents\Baldur's Gate II - Enhanced Edition\portraits.

Juicyfer

For a portrait package, this was not what I expected...
I've got six new character images, 3 for male and 3 for female, and they're apparently not cooperating with Baldur II.
I would rather implement this DLC as 'plus material' for the Enhanced Edition itself.

If the DLC is ever updated with more images and BG2EE playable, I will certainly change this status.

I am not sure why people are disliking this, it is a simple process to copy and paste the portrait folder into the 2nd game.
At any rate these pictures are great, especially the male rogue one! Love it!

I love Baldur's gate. I think this game is dope, and I want continued support, but this portrait pack is weak. You can import custom portraits yourself, so there is absolutely no limit to the pictures you can use as your charname's avatar. The only reason I would, and did, pay money for this is as a form of "tipping" beamdog for doing the work on BG:EE.

FriendlyMuttonChops
FriendlyMuttonChops

They're nice portraits, but there are ones of just as good quality on the web which you can get for free. I'd recommend buying this if it's on sale, or if you really like the portraits that you see from the preview on the store page. As mentioned by other reviewers they're only readily available in BG1EE, not BG2EE (not without some extra work anyway)

If I was buying it at full price I'd expect something more...

Durmir

6 portraits for €2 is expensive, but it would be fine (especially if you're a fan / collector) if at least you could import them in BG2. But you can't! So yeah, total rip-off. It feels exactly the same way than flushing €2 down the toilet (without the satisfaction of the sweet noise it would make, however). Just don't buy...

WHAT THE F**K DID I JUST BUY?!?!

OMG, DON'T BUY THIS GARBAGE!!

DON'T LET BEAMDOG MAKE 2$ OFF YOUR LAZINESS AND BLIND CONSUMERISM, IT WILL TAKE YOU ALL OF 2 MINUTES TO MAKE YOUR OWN AS FOLLOWS:

MAKE YOUR OWN BMPs OUT OF FANTASY ART FROM GOOGLE (i.e. just Google "female warrior fantasy art", "dark priestess fantasy", etc). SAVE THE PICTURES IN A FOLDER, OPEN MS PAINT, EDIT YOUR PICTURE BY CROPPING IT TO APPROXIMATE PORTRAIT SHAPE, THEN USING "RESIZE" TO FIRST CHANGE THE HEIGHT OR WIDTH TO 330 OR 210 PIXELS RESPECTIVELY, WHICHEVER # ALLOWS FOR PIXELS TO SPARE ON THE OTHER SO THAT BOTH NUMBERS EQUAL OR EXCEED 330x210, THEN CROP OFF THE EXCESS PIXELS BY USING THE RECTANGULAR SELECTION TOOL TO SELECT A 330x210 AREA OF THE PICTURE (you can see the pixel count at the bottom of Paint while selecting, carefully select exactly 330x210 pixels of it, your mouse sensitivity may make this difficult, if so, lower it in the control panel), THEN "R-CLICK SELECTED PICTURE AREA>CUT>FILE>NEW" (don't save the changes when prompted), RESIZE THE BLANK AREA TO SMALLER THAN 330x210, PASTE THE 330x210 PIXELS YOU JUST CUT INTO THAT LITTLE BLANK AREA, SAVE IT AS "xxxxxxxL.bmp", RESIZE THE PICTURE "xxxxxxxL.bmp" AGAIN ADJUSTING PIXELS HEIGHT TO 266, SAVE AS "xxxxxxxM.bmp" AND THEN USE THE RECTANGULAR SELECTION FEATURE TO SELECT AN 84x54 PIXEL AREA OF THE CHARACTER'S FACE, CUT IT, SELECT FILE>NEW, RESIZE THE BLANK AREA TO SMALLER THAN 84x54, AND PASTE, THEN SAVE AS "xxxxxxxS.bmp" (you should end up with 3 bmp files with similar names - do not exceed 7 characters before the "L", "M" or "S", per my examples throughout this instructional, after you're done, place them in a folder called "Portraits" in your "Documents>Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition" folder). TADA! YOU HAVE JUST DONE WHAT BEAMDOG WAS GOING TO CHARGE YOU 2$ FOR AND YOU GOT A BETTER PICTURE THAT YOU ACTUALLY CHOSE YOURSELF AND ACTUALLY LIKE!..

note: You might only need to create a 330x210 sized portrait now for Baldur's Gate EE, but the method I described still works for all versions of Baldur's Gate, and GUESS WHAT?! YEP, YOU CAN ALSO JUST COPY YOUR PORTRAITS FOLDER FROM YOUR "DOCUMENTS>BALDUR'S GATE ENHANCED EDITION" FOLDER AND PASTE IT INTO YOUR "DOCUMENTS>BALDUR'S GATE II ENHANCED EDITION" FOLDER AND NOW THEY WORK THERE TOO, UNLIKE THIS WASTE OF MONEY BEAMDOG CALLS A 2$ PORTRAIT PACK! AMAZING!

GDi!! SERVES ME RIGHT FOR NOT READING WHAT IT WAS FIRST....ARE YOU KIDDING ME BEAMDOG?!?! YOU'RE SELLING 6 330x210 PIXEL 24-BIT BMPs FOR 2$?! GET REAL!! YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES! WHY DON'T YOU ACTUALLY MAKE ADDITIONAL MODULES THAT ARE WORTHWHILE?! YOU HAVE A GOLDEN GOOSE HERE AND WE'D BE HAPPY TO PAY FOR ACTUAL ADDITIONAL CONTENT!

Unfortunately, I was strongly dissapointed by this product. I hoped it was much bigger portrait pack, but those are only 6 portraits, none of them being particularily good-looking. Also no addition of high-resolution versions - e.g. to be used as wallpaper. You can create your own, prettier portraits, really easily - and for free. The only posivite thing is that I bought this with great discount.

But seriously...why?

Beamdog: "Hey, can I have $2 for pizza?"
Me: "Sure! Here."

Me: "Um...no? Why? Here, just call it pizza money."

The most contents you could find for Badlur's Gate, the most enjoyments you will get out of it.
Those are some well executed piece of arts that add variety to the game, supporting Beamdog for reviving this franchise is a pleasure.

ok take a pass on this one folks. it wasnt that great the art wasnt great for the price. unless you realy want some more option id suggest passing this one up.

Trollhammer

Why buy this when you can download another package from moddb that's vastly, VASTLY superior to anything this 2 dollar package delivers and it's well over 500 portraits to choose from. Just google super ultimate portrait pack and unzip it to your My Documents\Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition\portraits and delete every file that doesn't end with an L. It's just smaller version of the portrait as the original infinity engine required that. Yeah, I got this in a bundle and I still think it's a bad purchase.

Skyfyre

Didn't pay attention before buying... There are ONLY 6 new portairs (3m, 3f)!
Total scam for 2$. :(

While official, I think you can find better options on Nexus or other sites. I was not too impressed. But I am not a DnD sword coast purist either. Dealers choice, but I would save the $1.99. I recommend the game, but not this particular DLC.

Nexus and your own images will have much more to offer.

What's the point?
You can get better portraits for free. Just include them into some folder in game files, then you can choose from it.

Microtransaction Review

What i like about the potraits are the fact that they are pretty close to the original games artstyle. In fact they took the artstyle and improved even its quality. It adds luckily a new female warrior potrait as the base game really lacks these. An issue for me would be that all the characters except one are clearly human and i rather would have prefered another orc, dwarf halfing etc.

My main issue is that they can be buggy. I tried using them in black pits and imported a character. As soon as you import a character it seems that the pictures will just turn into a low quality warrior picture of the base game. Also you can take them over to the main game.

Conclusion/TL;DR
I only got this dlc solely because i bought the anthology and the only picture i am frequently using is the cleric picture. But the quality of the drawings are so good that i really would miss them in the game without. They can be buggy tough and i wouldnt recommend them if you want to import lots of characters.

MRo
MRo

Honestly not worth it. There are tons of artist that can just implement things for free.

Besides, with a bit of modding, this dlc stopped working.

Benseth
Benseth

This DLC is a bit underwhelming. However I definitively will pay for more portraits and voices (!) for BG1/BG2. Here is an idea, get Artastrophes awesome painted portraits as a DLC, and include a plethora of new portraits for player characters, of every race and class combination.

Add also another DLC for "NPC Portraits", with painted portraits for major NPCs in game. Here is a list of NPCs that should have their own portraits: Gaelan Bayle, Firkraag (Human and dragon form), Revan, Gorion in BG1, Duke Entar Silvershield, Saemon Havarian, the lord of Trademeet, the High priests in the temple, Maevar, the lord of the Paladins, the Half-Orc in the Nashkel mines (1st boss), the Drow Matriarch etc.

Baldur's Gate is one of my favourite computer games of all time (top 10) but Faces of Good & Evil is just not worth the price. It should be free considering you only get 6 portraits (3 female & 3 male). It would only be worth it if there was a male and female of each race and of each class for that race. For example, I only place as a male elf or gnome in AD&D, so this DLC is worthless to me.

AV

Call this a mixed review, due to the price.

In terms of what we get, the portraits are great. Are they $2? Arguably, no. Recommend only picking this up at a hefty discount or, ideally, as part of the Baldur's Gate: The Complete Saga or The Infinity Collection bundles.

The Forgotten
The Forgotten

Very beautiful portraits. Very clean and they feel like portraits that belong in the game.
And please, don't be turned off by the product's price. Its 2 dollars, for 6 portraits. That is roughly 34 cents for each portrait, not a big deal. And it is a good way to help Beamdog, by helping them, they can keep a support staff so we might see more stuff from them in the future.
Fully recommend the product.

HazeEmDazeEm
HazeEmDazeEm

Six absolutely stunning portraits. They fit right into the aesthetic of the game and look far better than any you'll download online. It would be great to have more of the same, also: voices!

eckister

gorgeous portraits in HD! it may be possible to download portraits, however very often they are neither in HD, nor sized appropriately for the game, hence while the 2 bucks may seem like much, they both support wonderful artists AND save you some labor. Id call that a good deal.

Nexiu
Nexiu

It includes 6 good looking portraits, but the problem is that you can't export them to BG2, so it's not really worth it.

Domaithianus
Domaithianus

6 portraits. Not even particularly nice ones. Was rather disappointed, especially when considering the wealth of gorgeous fan made portraits I've been able to find online for free.

Draeka3
Draeka3

Why buy it if you can make your own portrait ? Stil, the quality is there as usual... since it's not even 2 bucks why not grab it as well (If you take the whole Baldur's Gate Bundle you technically get it for free because of the offer)...

Solar Beast
Solar Beast

People whining about these portraits costing a WHOLE $2 are just cheap, low-iq scrubs. If you don't want the portraits, don't buy them and keep your salty mouth shut. It's $0.33 per portrait. If that's outside your price range, you might want to find a new hobby.

These portraits are quality and are arguably worth $2 EACH. These are artworks. It doesn't matter if they are digital, those that designed them and made them available to us deserve to be compensated for that effort. Period.

Again, if you're going to whine and post a bad review over an option $2 pack that does not alter game play, you need to sell your computer and find something else to do with your time. Maybe go get a job, you broke ass.

yaerav

Ok, "Don't recommend" may be a bit harsh, for the mere euro and a half that you pay for this. But still, it's just six portraits. Which is a bit... meh. Especially since this was not clear from the description.

necaradan666
necaradan666

It's just a few portraits of no greater quality than the millions you can find online. They don't even match the style of the vanilla portraits. I wouldn't want to point fingers but I'm sure I've seen bits of these portraits in other artworks before, cut together in photoshop like many BG portraits have been over the years? I dunno. But if they are and they are selling them that's no good.

Noober

Do not buy this unless your are buying the infinity engine collection/bundle on sale. its not worth it as other people have pointed out.

Review of: Baldur's Gate: Faces of Good and Evil

The DLC consists of six new character portraits designed by Kieran Yanner and, well, both male and female alternatives are pretty neat if you ask me. Unfortunately, they can’t be imported or moved to Baldur’s Gate II. Besides, you can easily add any picture as a character portrait to both games completely free of charge. Anyway, I’d suggest buying the DLC during a sale or as a part of the Infinity Collection bundle if you’re a collector or simply like the portraits and want to support the artist.
