Defense Grid: The Awakening - You Monster DLC is a standalone DLC which directly follows the story of the main campaign and replaces your charming British artificial intelligence companion with the witty GLaDOS from the renowned Portal series.

The DLC contains six new levels (the first two are part of the base game) in which GLaDOS keeps you company with a number of amusing observations, quips, and facetious explanations for the new and interesting mechanics that alter how four of the levels are played. Regrettably, the red and blue portal mechanic from the titular series isn't used as one of these new mechanics and I think that is a sorely missed opportunity. Otherwise, the levels are well-designed and challenging but they sometimes rely on you to react to an ever-changing battlefield, as well as the selling of towers and blocking of paths, rather than pure strategy and tower placement like the base game. Unfortunately, the 36 extra challenge missions (not 35 like the store page claims) are mostly the same for each map and there isn't much variety between them.

Overall, I recommend it but mostly for the appearance of GLaDOS who is full of quips and entertaining anecdotes and is easily the best part of the DLC; however, the new mechanics are a welcome surprise which completely change how some maps played and is a refreshing change of pace from the main game. For those who like waiting for sales, be warned that this DLC only goes on sale two to three times per year for 75% off at 1.24 USD so you might have to wait a while if you miss a sale.

If you're interested, you can find my review of the base game here.

The DLC adds seven achievements which require you to earn a gold medal on 35 of the 44 missions (16 of which must be the Story and Story Challenge missions) and will take approximately 15-16 hours to complete. Unfortunately, this becomes a bit of a stale chore because the challenge missions are mostly the same for each map unlike the base game which had an abundant variety of challenge missions.

Best tower defense game gets better! Ups the challenge quite a bit, thank god for the rewind button. Wonderfully captures the spirit of Portal and is brilliantly chaotic at times. Likely to push you out of your comfort zone if you've settled into a single strategy for the core game.

One of the best gaming cross overs ever, combining the strategy of defense grid, pushing you to think outside your strategy box all the while being heckeled by Glados. It's a bitter sweet combination that leaves a replayable and fun exerience.

I just finished the story modes of this new DLC and cannot recommend it enough if you already like Defense Grid. And if you are a Portal fan (who isn't?), then I recommend it all the more! This DLC is different from all the previous ones (aside from the Portal theme), in that every level throws in some new and interesting twist unlike anything seen in the main game. I guarantee you will be surprised at some of the unique wrenches GLaDOS throws into the works. It's really fun, and also challenging. Definitely pick this one up if you already own DG, or maybe even if you don't. And now, if you'll excuse me, I must get back to playing all of the alternate game modes :) ...

Thankfully, not just "more of the same"!
The new missions successfully shake up existing strategies, at least on the first playthrough. The enemy waves are also more challenging - definitely not DLC for beginning players.

Excellent addition to an awesome tower defense game.

Brings GLaDOS to Defense Grid, what more do I have to say? The humor from Portal ported to Defense Grid, awesome!

Very nice blend of Glados and Defense Grid! Includes some interesting gameplay twists on different missions (tower restriction, tower ordering, glados builds, etc) A. 4 Hours to complete story.

This DLC adds excellent levels and GLaDOS (and all the heckling that goes along with that)!

The combination of the Portal (game by Valve) graphics and GLaDOS voice/character into the Defense Grid world was excellent. While the DLC on the whole is really very good and recommended, the DLC needed some level-balancing...the very first level took me about 5 tries to find a path/solution that would even remotely work and, for me, was by far the toughest map of the entire DLC. A couple other maps in this DLC gave me challenges too, but that's part of the fun; only that first map, I thought was too tough, especially for a first map of a DLC.

This DLC is also unique in that it would come up with 'twists' during the level...it would remove a couple towers, or not allow you to build a certain type of tower, or only allow you to place command towers while it placed all other turrets, etc. This DLC made for unique set of challenges and a lot of fun.

Despite the 8 maps, however, this is a short DLC taking only roughly 2.5hrs to complete the campaign and that's including my struggling on 2 of the levels.

Not quite as good as the Resurgence DLC set (my favorite), but certainly a very nice DLC indeed. 8.5 out of 10

Innovative twists introduced by GLaDOS make each new level of this DLC something unique, as what you thought you knew about the 'rules' changes each time. Heartily recommended.

Before I review this map pack, let me say this:
I played this nice game a couple of years ago.
Mostly because of this Portal cross-over DLC.
Yes, this DLC takes place in Aparture Science.
They even added the GLaDOS voice into this.
It's a whole campaign all about Portal games.
There's quite a lot of playtime from this DLC.
Perhaps this was the best DLC for this game.
I especially enjoyed them GLaDOS dialogues.
And overall: It's just simply, really well made.
This DLC deserves a gigantic positive review.

First of all, I love the base game, it's one of the best TD games out there. Having said that, I don't understand how this mediocre DLC gets so highly rated. A good TD level is all about strategy, you look at the layout of the level and place your towers, you can plan your defence from the start and if you done it right, you don't have to rush or sell towers. This DLC is not about strategy, it's purely about trial and error.

One of the few issues the base game had is that a small number of levels required time perfect tower placement and upgrades to get Gold medals. You've kept all the cores and you have thousands of credits left over when the last enemy dies and yet you miss out on the gold because your score is 2% off the required score. Your strategy has worked flawlessly but you missed out because your placement/upgrades were not time perfect. It's a frustrating and unnecessary requirement that adds precisely zero value to the game. What was a small issue in the base game that only affected 2 or 3 levels is turned up to 11 and affects most levels in this DLC. The way you work through this is by repeatedly replaying the level, slightly changing the timing of upgrades. It's not good design.

This is probably the first time I review of piece of DLC, but You Monster is worth it. Even without any knowledge of Portal this is a large and interesting expansion but it is nearly genius in how well it manages to blend ind Portal humor and gameplay.

This DLC is in fact more of the same but with the twist of GLaDOS. They only added maps and voice acting - No new towers.

It turns out to be a fantastic fit as GLaDOS will torment you and mess with your towers and strategy.

GLaDOS meets tower defense

Full voice-over by Ellen McLaine. I bought this and the main game (Defense Grid) it just to hear GLaDOS taunt me as I was playing. Well worth it, I found out that I really liked the main game. The game plus this DLC are great value for the money (just the cake tastes a little off -- who puts "fish shaped candy" on a cake?)

You Monster DLC (aka The Portal DLC) adds unexpected challenges to each map. Some change the rules about where, when, or how you can place towers. Others have aliens path in an unexpected way. The DLC causes you to rethink your strategy based on the constraints, but it does so in a way that keeps the game fun and enjoyable while giving you a new challenge.

that is one of crossovers that we do not expect too see, without knowing we needed, but now we see that we needed it. the discussion between GLaDOS and Fletcher were hilarious. btw Fletcher ftw
