Kaito gets his time to shine with some much-needed character development. With the familiar and more brutal combat styles similar to Kiryu’s, Kaito hits like a truck and it’s a blast mowing down all of his enemies.

The story here is pretty good and I enjoyed the new characters. It’s completely separate from the base game so you can really play it at any time. You are only getting another 6 or so hours of linear story content here, but what’s there is very good. $30 can still seem a bit steep but it’s worth it on a sale.

It's pretty short, completing almost everything took 6-7 hours. Kaito is a more likeable character than Yagami and I enjoyed playing as him. I got this for 50% off which seems like a fair price, would like a full game as Kaito.

Brilliant story with excellent dramatic performances from the entire cast and some of the most menacing characters in Yakuza series. Spanning just 4 chapters, it's still longer than an average side-story, but much shorter than a full game; the lack of major side-quests makes it a very focused and concise experience.

I wouldn't pay $30 for it, but when it's on sale for $15 or so/half the price? Yeah, I'd get it. It's pretty short (8-10 hours) featuring a character that isn't seen too much in the main game/Lost Judge Eyes.

It's story for Kaito isn't as good as the main games, but it'll keep you engaged as you go through the battle system as Kaito over Yagami's 3 styles.

Amazing as the main game, the fact they made a whole story DLC for a SIDE character, speaks volumes that RGG really cares about giving the fans a good time. Kaito having 2 fighting styles that have moves from Kiryu and Seijima was a great treat, and the story, athough short, it's just as good as the rest of the series.

I honestly didn't expect much from The Kaito Files but this was superb! The story was great and it has a really good final boss. It took about 6 hours for me to finish and I'd say it's very much worth it!

Really good DLC overall, although a bit overpriced, imo. It's a must-play for any Lost Judgment enjoyer.

Kaito feels different to play (and yet also very familiar to those who played Y0, YK1 and YK2) and has his own distinctive gimmicks from Yagami's styles. The story is just fantastic, really expands on Kaito as a character and I REALLY hope this storyline continues. The DLC in general does a lot of interesting things in the story, and doesn't pull any punches on violence just like Judgment/Lost Judgment didn't, so it really feels like a continuation of the story as it is told from a different perspective, it's great.

There's practically no side content asides from collecting all the skills and then challenging a small handful of bosses for one achievement, but there's just enough stuff to do while you're going through the story to keep yourself occupied and get stronger.

Not great compared to the base game, the story length was appropriate, but it's the writing that appears pale compared to the story that happened in the first game in the same city of Tokyo, or the second game that sees Yagami and Kaito on a business trip to Yokohama
The timeline is messy, the story overlap of what Kaito does here and what Kaito does in the main story is shockingly similar, without spoiling too much, they apparently made Kaito the necessary human shield character who swoops in to allow Yagami to do his own thing, which when it comes this bromance relationship there certainly should be more to it.
Price point gets brought up a lot, but it's a thing about how much you really like this character from these two games to reward a DLC purchase, if you like meaty combat, and want to see how the story could go in the yakuza series, this could be worth your money.

Great DLC.
In Kaito Files you play as Yagami's brother innarms, Mashuhiro Kaito. After a brief nod to a past relationship of Kaito's in the main Lost Judgment game, this DLC explores that relationship both in past and present.

After Yagami is away for a couple weeks resolving a divorce case Kaito is left to fend for himself. He gets a request by a man to look for Mimiko, Kaito's former girlfriend while in the Yakuza.

There are no side quests or much to do on the side. It is just a DLC after all. The combat is where this needs to excel and it's pretty much the same as the normal campaign. Kaito has 2 styles. Both are based on previous styles used by Kiryu. He has Brawler (thug) style and Tank (beast) style. However, these styles while having many similarities do have its own quirks unique to Kaito.

Outside of that, the game is pretty much what you got in the bad game. Great looking, long playtime, etc.

If money is something of an issue and you are contemplating on buying this dlc, I would wait till it goes on sale but if you are a fan of the Yakuza series or Judge Eyes, I would say what lies ahead of you is worth your time.

Gameplay - You play for the first time as fan favorite ex-yakuza and detective partner Masaharu Kaito and delve into his two unique fighting styles focusing on Bruiser which acts as your standard damage dealer, and Tank which is your defensive stance. Now yes it is true that both styles are (at least half) combo and ability rips from Kiryu's brawler and beast styles in Yakuza 0, and Kiwami 1. Now does that mean there is no original ability idea in here? No, there being new heavy grab attacks for both styles and a completely new spin on combos in EX. Hell, even old abilities from those games can be reworked like the beast stout being able to regain health at the cost of heat, has now been swapped around having you sacrifice health for more EX. Returning EX animations and even brand new ones that are flashy as all hell, and the best part about all of the abilities is that you can get all of them by the time you reach the final boss without having to grind SP, or at least I did so it was quite casual for me. Another thing to note is that some of these abilities that came from the old engine were NOT made for the new flashy dragon engine in mind, like the Tank charge ability that sends enemies dominoing into each other, and taking shields in seconds off of more dangerous foes. Despite some abilities being reused, combat was still refreshing and fun to the point I was jumping out of my seat at pure adrenaline and excitement in moments. Def. a MAJOR step up from the majima chronicles in Kiwami 2.

Setting - Only takes place in Kamurocho of Tokyo and im honestly fine with that, I feel like if they gave us the entirety of Isezaki Ijincho from the main story to explore that it would be overkill with the length of the story being only four chaptors and the area of Kamurocho matching the story length just fine. There are also collectables scattered throughout the neon light streets of Kamurocho that can only be found specifically with 1 of Kaito's 3 primal senses being sight, smell, and hearing, and it was quite fun stumbling into them and unlocking big explosive abilities sometimes being really OP like the beta tiger drop from brawler making a flashy new comeback. There is not really anymore extra content like new mini games or anything like that, but manages to keep you entertained with the father and son dynamic of Kaito and Jun (a teenage boy who is convinced he is your son roaming around the city together). He keeps you company throughout exploring the city chiming in with dialogue here and there and can also join you in some mini games like shogi, or darts which is a nice touch. There are also elite enemies that you can trigger to spawn with an amulet that nets you amazing SP and decent money, and when a certain amount are taken down you can challenge a secret boss right before the final fight if you want a challenge.

The Fights - I just needed this to be its own sections but the fights in this game (without giving off any spoilers) are some of the most insane fights within the whole series, at least it was for me. Like some of the introductions from these guys are so over the top I couldn't help but just smile at the absurdity of it. There was also some of the best cinematography within qte segments and dynamic intros in here that are the best in the series, so if you like the over the top action fights within the yakuza/judge eyes series then no doubt about it, pick this baby up.

This dlc took me about 13 hours to complete, obtaining all abilities, and playing through the story and there were no complaints within those 13 hours for me.

I greatly enjoyed the return of my beloved Beast style, but unless you like Kaito as a character that much this is a pick on sale DLC. There simply is not much else outside of the main case (no new sidestories, minigames, ect).
Obviously it is cool to see more of this lovable brute, but the amount of content you get out of the DLC simply does not justify the price tag in my personal opinion.

Lost Judgment - The Kaito Files Story Expansion is a must-play for fans of the Judgment series, as it gives the spotlight to one of the most charismatic and badass characters in the franchise: Masaharu Kaito. In this DLC, you get to experience Kaito's personal story, as he investigates a case that involves his ex-girlfriend, a mysterious teenager, and a ruthless criminal organization. Along the way, you will enjoy Kaito's unique detective skills, his brutal fighting styles, and his hilarious interactions with other characters.

The Kaito Files Story Expansion is a well-paced and engaging adventure that delivers a satisfying conclusion to Kaito's arc. The story is full of twists and turns, emotional moments, and thrilling action scenes. The gameplay is varied and fun, offering you different ways to approach each situation, whether it's sneaking around, brawling with enemies, or solving puzzles. The DLC also features some of the best boss fights in the series, as well as some new collectibles and mini-games that add humor, depth, and challenge to the game.

Lost Judgment - The Kaito Files Story Expansion is a game that will appeal to fans of detective stories, action games, and Japanese culture. It is a game that will make you feel like a real detective, a badass fighter, and a curious explorer. It is a game that will make you laugh, cry, and think. It is a game that you will not regret playing.

I suggest purchasing the DLC during the sale as the usual price was quite high.

Great story but unreasonably expensive - both Kaitos styles are just reused from Yakuza 0, there's no substories, whole thing takes place in Kamurocho and its only 5/6 hours long. Don't get this full price.

Peacemaker
Peacemaker

Is the price equivalent to the content? No, even if its on sale its still too much for a 6h to complete the whole thing BUT the story itself is a gold, good ost, 2 very fun styles to use, an interesting main plot which is not as predictable as people write here. So would i recommend it? Yes but its a "Quality over quantity" so i would recommend buying it if its on sale and you got spare money to spend.

This was honestly an amazing DLC for an amazing video game. Difficulty is iffy, I played the entire DLC on Legend and it honestly didn't give me any trouble, I first tried 99% of the bosses. (That includes both final bosses). The story was great, a complete flip around from Kiwami 2's Majima extended story where Kaito actually gets the girl and it's less bittersweet. Kenmochi was a crazy character, I loved every scene he was in. Being a trauma ridden drunk worked out with him. And that final scene where he gets up and chokes out Kyoya. One of the most intense scenes I've seen in gaming. 10/10, but maybe wait for a sale, $30 might be a bit much for 8 hours of gametime. And, though I enjoyed revisiting Kiryu's old styles (except rush for some reason) I would've enjoyed more effort put into Kaito, his own fighting styles. But, maybe that's harder than I think it is and I'm just stupid.

A good dlc to a great game

The price without any discounts isn't really worth buying. I advice anyone who is looking to get this dlc to buy it with the Judgment Collection while it is on sale for a better experience

The combat reintroduces the beast and brawler styles from Y0 to the refined dragon engine with some minor changes. Overall the combat feels great

The story is really good and i can't wait how they will follow up on this dlc's ending in the next judgment-game.

Needless to say the story is really great and gives a lot of insight into Kaito's history.

Overall ill give this dlc a solid 8/10

This is how a DLC should be good story writing after all the yakuza series this is the first time they decided to let a woman survive or not end up leaving by some bullshit excuses and my man Kaito got what he been missing overall 100% approved

I didn't have much expectations at first, but after finishing it I have to say:

Holy, that's a hell of a story for a 8 hour DLC. It's as good as the main one.

I wish more AAA games had DLCs like this.

This DLC is awesome, it's honestly not that short, clocking in at around 3-5 hours if you rush it, 7+ if you take your time. It has TWO MORE styles you can use, all with upgrades like Yagami. The story is awesome and the ending is pure gold. It's worth the price.

It has as much polish as the base game which is saying a lot!

Bulsy

Although its price is a bit higher that what I'd like to see for something of this scope, I still fully recommend the expansion as a perfect way to end off Lost Judgment. In keeping with the game's themes, I still found the lead characters very interesting, and it was a joy to play Tank (Beast mode in Yakuza 0) again! With an OST that never misses, I loved The Kaito Files as a shorter, more focused character driven experience.

ULT/Kovač
ULT/Kovač

AMAZING DLC for an already amazing game. Hopefully RGG does more of these for future Judgment games where they can expand on other characters like Higashi or Sugiura, considering this one did Kaito justice. Only complaint I have isn't anything related to the quality of the DLC, but the price, as this DLC is quite pricey and in my opinion, is more in the $10-15 range, not $30, so get this on a sale.

Pretty good, small focused campaign with deserved focus on kaito. Hope he appears in yakuza 8. Brings out the best in lost judgement and minimizing the drawbacks. The amount of loading screens is still stupid though.

Script-writer extraordinaire Tommy Wiseau enters the room.
He decisively adjusts his impressive mane and sits down in a chair with his name on it.

Me: Mister Wiseau, good to see you, thank you for taking the time to talk to us about your latest project: The Kaito Files!

TW: Oh, hi Marc! Yes, happy to grace you with my talent, I mean presence! *he folds his hands and settles down*

Me: Can you tell us what this story DLC is about?

TW: Sure. First of all: He did not hit her. He did NOT.

Me: *a question mark appears above my head as I grunt in confusion*

TW: Kaito is a manly man. You know, the type of guy who is in his forties, his career is set and his love life is blooming.

Me: Excuse me, Mister Wiseau, but isn't Kaito perpetually broke and known to be a womanizer without any success, despite his impressive physique?

TW: You obviously have not understood the deep layers of this character. When Mister shady millionaire guy shows up and asks Kaito-san to find his wife, it turns out that it is Masahiro's ex-gf! Can you believe that? She is so beautiful, she is. Mikiko-san, a special woman. An arm-twisting woman who doesn't take no for an answer. The kind that murders people for good reason, you know?

Me: *visibly confused* So this is a love story, how Kaito finds out about his lost love and re-unites with her?

TW: Most of all, it is about collecting bundles. I've been looking for these. I could smell them, see them, sometimes even hear them. This hunk of a man can smell anything! Even cats with family crests hidden inside. He's amazing. He punches very hard. Even doctors. He doesn't care, he's Kaito!

Me: Can you tell us, does the story have a happy ending?

TW: *he gets up and screams* You're tearing me apart, Marc! They do. After Mikiko is chased for days, she finally finds the evil guys who killed her family and she is about to take revenge. But then the most evil guy appears. It is her own husband. And suddenly Mikiko just stands there for three hours with the gun in her hand, you know? She can't shoot her husband, she would be a murderer then! And her son, he would have such a bad rolemodel. He wants to become a Yakuza, you know? Just like Kaito!

Me: Isn't Kaito working together with Yagami and hasn't he given up on his Yakuza past?

TW: Don't interrupt me! So as the evil husband is holding the knife to his own sons neck, he tells Kaito how his evil plan is going to unfold. Just in time for Kaito to punch through all of his 32 lifebars and knock him down. But he's not dead, oh no. The Crimson Lotus alcoholic finishes him. Then Kaito collapses and wakes up in hospital. But he has no time to celebrate, he needs to see about a girl. So he goes and fights the old doctor who's in love with her and he's ripped you know? He ate his carrots and now he is Bruce Lee. He has even more healthbars and he doesn't die when you get rid of them, he can just refill them. *laughs hysterically* Then he oils himself up for the last showdown, to decide who gets the girl.
And Mikiko, she is waiting, you know? She has no opinion of her own, she just has big boobs.
What a woman. *moans*

Me: *stares in utter confusion* So.. Does Kaito get to kiss the girl in the end?

TW: Well, they do shake hands for a brief moment and then sort of stare as the credits begin to roll. A classic love story, I am telling you! *raises fists dramatically*

Me: O...kay. I think the time is already up, sadly. Thank you for the interview, Mister Wiseau! We sure are looking forward to more great storytelling from you as your role as script writer for Ryu Ga Gotoku!

TW: You know what they say: Love is only good when it's on sale. Anyway, how is your sex life? See you in November, there is more gameplay recycling to be done! Bye Marc!

PS: I don't know why it says 0.0 hours, I obviously played this DLC completely. It took me about 10-12 hours, I guess.

I hate to make reviews based on price, but this game is shockingly overpriced for what it offers. I loved almost everything about this DLC, but it's £25 for essentially 4-5 hours of content. If it goes on sale, get it. Otherwise, this DLC costs almost as much as Yakuza 3, 4 and 5 combined (If you get the Yakuza Remastered Collection) with about 1/100th of the amount of content.

seanwang_cn

Pretty much RGG's only good DLC. Still, you can squeeze about 10-12 hours from this game, which is very little considering the price. Still a good experience, I'm a Kaito fanboy so there's nothing I love more than watching him be buff and sniff things and be a good father. Would probably only recommend if you REALLY want to play as Kaito, who basically just has Kiryu's movesets. Just watch a play through on Youtube for the story.

ᴠʏᴛᴀʟɪᴄ
ᴠʏᴛᴀʟɪᴄ

A must play for fans who are interested in learning more about Kaito. This DLC dives more into Yagami's partner "Kaito" with a standalone story of his own(albeit a relatively short one). We get to learn more about Kaito as an individual and his past as well. Battle wise, his themes are really unique, I love Tankin' Hits(Tank Style) , his moves are copy pasted from Kiryu's Yakuza 0 moveset(Brawler for Bruiser and Beast for Tank), though his moves doesn't have much knockback compared to Kiryu's.

I've enjoyed playing this DLC, it made me appreciate who Kaito is as a person, he's usually seen as a brute guy, the big kind of guy who uses force and all that.. but the standalone story gave him a lot more personality and shows he's capable without needing help from his partner. PS; Get on sale, it's still pretty expensive!

TLDR: The DLC of all time!

Joke header aside, I really LIKED The Kaito Files expansion. It's truly a labour of love that took real effort to bring to life because I can't fathom how they keep writing the narrative at such a HIGH level, CONSISTENTLY!

There were some plot points that I attempted to predict, with some right, and some wrong. And to me, the best part of predicting is being wrong because RGG surely surprised me with how they were writing the narrative for this one. There was one middling detail that I thought was going to be X (no spoilers here!) but it turned out to be Y instead, and that made it all so much better than if I was right instead. Some of the writing, when you boil it down at a higher level, seems familiar. If you're up to date with the main entries storyline, you'll a tiny little bit of Yakuza 0 in there, as well as Y1 / Kiwami 1 and 2 / K2. 6 as well, thanks to the final boss. They'd give Iwami a run for the most treacherous bastard to walk the Earth hahaha.

The characters weren't overly complex. Things were easily digestible, mentally. And I feel an above average of emotion (from anger to joy, etc..) towards most of the cast, which speaks to not just how well they're WRITTEN but also ACTED. Props to not just the script writers but also the voice actors!

As for the gameplay, it was certainly short, but:
1. I missed Yakuza 0 Kiryu gameplay and I'm elated to get some of that itch scratched. I knew Yakuza 0 movesets was possible in Dragon Engine!
2. Good ol' Kamurocho with a lot of recycled content. Honestly, it is a story expansion. Not an overhaul that is to be on the same scale as the new Gaiden game featuring Kiryu once again.

The pricing is certainly steep, don't get me wrong. I'm a budget conscious gamer so I tend to lean for sale prices when picking new things up like I did here, but after playing the story through in full, believe me when I say that this is damn NEARLY worth it at full price. Which means... if you're a Lost Judgment / Kaito fan, getting this on sale is a no-brainer!

Verdict / score? NINE OUT OF TEN! (9 / 10)
A very minor part of the narrative's writing has me questioning it just for a bit, but it makes way pretty quick for the pretty well-done ending for the story. I also wish for a bit more things to do with Kaito, but honestly.. this leaves me very sated as far as side stories goes. I'd say its up there with Gods & Kings and Brave New World DLCs for Civ V tier!

If they ever make a Judgement 3 and another Kaito DLC they need to name it Judgement 3: Like a Feral Beast.

I think the price is a bit much for the amount of content, but it's still really good and if you get it in the Judgement pack that includes the two games plus the DLC it's a fair price. I would love to see RGG do this again, not just with Kaito, but other side characters. Maybe beef it up a bit more, add some actual achievements and sub stories and completion points and then sell it as its own 6 hour game for 30 bucks. No need to make any new towns there's so much that already exists, I just want to see more stories.

9.5/10 The best DLC for a masterpiece!

I'm so glad Kaito got the spotlight because he deserves it.
Kaito plays differently from Yagami. While Yagami has four different fighting styles (Crane, Tiger, Snake, Boxer), Kaito has two fighting styles (Brawler and Tank). He plays more like Kiryu imo. (If that's wrong, please correct me, I'm just starting to play Yakuza 0).
The soundtrack, gameplay and story is as expected fantastic and fun.

Spoiler about the final boss:

The final boss is not what I expected. It is new and innovative. I've never seen anything like this before. And the music fits perfectly to the boss fight.

For a DLC, it's really good. If it was a standalone game then there would be a problem.

I'd like to give it a 10/10, but the game is short. It only has four chapters. You can play through the story in 5-7 hours. It's not that long (Ok, there are other games that are shorter than this one, so I'll give it a pass).

I would recommend this DLC to anyone who loves the Judgment series. For 30 bucks, it's too expensive. Buy this DLC when it's on sale, unless you really love Lost Judgment and want to learn more about Kaito's past.

Overall, and a message to Sega:
Anyway, I'd like to thank Sega for releasing the Judgment Collection on Steam. The DLC is a must buy!
I hope we will see a sequel to Lost Judgment in the future. ^^

And I really hope you guys will release more of your old games on Steam, especially Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise and Skies of Arcadia. ^^

I like this DLC, especially because I like Kaito, but it's way too overpriced for what is it. There is basically no unique side content aside from maybe collecting a few items around the map (not that interesting, but the memories you can find are nice). Combat is also reused, retouched styles of Kiryu's from Yakuza 0.

I would suggest you pick this up on a sale (like I did), eventually in a bundle if you can. It's very good, it's just a tad overpriced. If you don't care how much it costs, I'll just say it's a very good DLC and Kaito story.

Excellent, truly excellent! Found it waaaay better and more enjoyable than the main story of LJ. It was nice seeing Kaito get the spotlight for a change and they wrapped up his story perfectly. Wish it was longer.

This story takes some time after the events of the main game, you play as Kaito and uncover the mystery along with his backstory which is good and interesting.
Goes without saying, but you will be playing as Kaito, and this where my only problem is with this DLC, Kaito's fighting. It's not bad, don't get me wrong, just kinda underwhelming and simple, man is a bit clumsy and will like lose balance here and there during the fights, he doesn't come with 4 fighting styles, he comes with 2. Brawler and Tank, which are quite fitting his character, I can't tell you which one is better, cause both have their own ups and downs.
Honestly, they feel like a downgrade, you come to this dlc after completing the main game where you have 4 styles and now are stuck with like 2 basic ones that we pretty much saw in Yakuza 0.

Overall, this DLC is worth getting on a discount besides the 2 basic fighting styles and being a bit overpriced, it is a good addition.

Pew Pew! McGoo
Pew Pew! McGoo

Honestly, as a big fan of the Judgment series and RGG in general, I'd have to say this DLC was largely disappointing. Playing as Kaito was fun, I think his fighting styles were a nice breath of fresh air and it was fun to slam things around, but it was possibly the only enjoyment I got from the game. That, and Higashi in an apron. Though to be honest, at a certain point, fighting did feel like a chore so I switched to the easiest difficulty just to finish the DLC.

The story is around 5 or so hours long, and while the most complaints I see is people wishing it were longer, I think it was a fine length to tell the story it had. The issue for me WAS the story though. I'll start by saying that most of the time, the "twists" RGG tend to write for their games tend to be predictable to an extent, but still written in a way that I enjoy what happens regardless and the twists are sometimes revealed in a way I truly DIDN'T expect at all. I can NOT say the same for the Kaito DLC.

It was predictable in every way, there was no real sense of tension, mystery, or anything. It's like they grabbed the B team for the writing, because the Judgment games are generally engaging, tense, and powerful. Lots of stuff happening, and in some ways, you don't know how it's going to end. But the DLC? Without giving much away, it all wraps up too neatly. There's no sense of intrigue, and to be honest, I truly wanted to drop the story about an hour in because I was just very disinterested. Nothing made me want to push past and see what happened. It didn't ever feel like much was at stake, and I didn't care for many of the characters.

I bought the Judgment collection because I knew I would enjoy both games, so thankfully I got the DLC for free, but it's really not worth more than a few bucks, and if you're a fan of the series, it seems very skippable anyway. I don't mind learning more about Kaito, but this just felt so cobbled together and not even tied-in that well with the series. It truly felt like they randomly decided to add some background story to Kaito that was never mentioned in the series at all, which I think is why it's hard to really feel that vested - it comes out of nowhere, basically.

The ending did not feel like a victory given how I felt by the end of it, and you DO (technically) get given a choice on how to end, but it's one of those choices where it's not really a choice at all, and you're forced into just choosing one option. And does it pay off? Nope! If anything, it just ends in a frustrating manner. I guess it was to give Kaito a proper sending off considering we're not likely to get a new Judgment game, but I feel like he didn't need it.

All in all, not worth it at all. Kaito is great, the DLC is not. It's better off to just remember him as having a good afternoon eating sushi with his bros and pretend the DLC is a "what if" scenario rather than anything canon.

A fun expansion that makes me wish for a full Kaito game. It is far better than what Majima got in Kiwami 2, and the plot was interesting to follow from start to end. Combat was very satisfying as per usual.

A fast-paced story with a rather simple, but gripping, plot line free of traditional stupid plot twists, that finally fleshes out and makes sense of Kaito's character, introduces the first female character RGG was able to treat with a modicum of respect until the very end and features by far the best boss fights in the series.

Despite all that, I still cannot recommend buying this, because it's 30€, which is half the price of the main game, for a 4 hour story that has no replayability (Legend difficulty, which is still very easy, is available from the start) and zero side content.

Do not sleep on this DLC! An amazing adventure with, while somewhat predictable, still delivers a very satisfying narrative. On top of that having Kaito as the playable character and learning more about him makes it worth it alone.

Kaito is really fun to fight with as well. Having two fighting styles using the Brawler and Beast styles from Yakuza 0 as a base works really well. While similar at first glance, Kaito still plays very differently from Kiryu would.
And using his senses such as smell and hearing to solve puzzles was something I prefered a lot over Yagami's tools.

Unfortunately not much in terms of side content, aside from the usual minigames and collectables. However, said collectables involve cats, so that's great. And you also get more tidbits into Kaito's past.

Big recommend from me. Well worth it and I would honestly love to see Kaito fleshed out and have his own spinoff game.

Classic No Bull**** DLC. Pleasantly surprising End Boss Fight and the Music to top it off that makes it feel like really emotional.

Loved how they brought back Yakuza 0 Fighting Styles in the Dragon Engine. Please RGG studios, please keep improving upon the dragon engine and this combat gameplay. IT is still way better than what you did for Yakuza 7.

The Kaito Files offers somewhat enjoyable, if predictable story, however its biggest problem is that there is nothing in this DLC that justifies its 30 euro/USD price tag. A lot of cutscenes feel very cheap due to the heavy reuse of the same pieces of background music that have already been overused in the base game and the very few prerended cutscenes do no favours either. Having a lot of moments that could've been touching being played out in engine with the same old animations seen in the last decade of RGG games is, as said before, cheap. To made things worse, there is no side content outside of the usual minigames, no substories or new activities.
Get it on a bigger sale (10 bucks), because not even at 20 this feels like a good deal.

First, this isn't worth full price. I'm not sure why they made it the price they did.

However, the DLC is pure unadulterated KINO. The Bruiser and Tank styles are just Brawler and Beast from Yakuza 0 with some Kaito style moves mixed in. Every boss fight is one banger after the next. The antagonist gets kinda cartoonishly evil but the final boss makes up for it tenfold with how awesome it is. I've played every game in the series besides Kenzan, Ishin, and the Black Panther games but the final boss is easily one of the best they've done. Not only in actually caring why you're doing the fight but the fight and music as well. I used to not care much for Kaito before but I definitely like him a lot more after this.

Quite short and can be finished in almost one or two sittings, but otherwise pretty fun and Kaito content is very much appreciated.

After spending a stupid amount of hours on lost judgement and being given the oppertunity to play as kaito, i believe this DLC is worth it, you get all the side stuff you can enjoy, arcade stuff, games etc. it is worth it both for the story and for the gameplay

Kaoru Sayama

The price for this DLC is more than I would regularly spend on DLC. However... The story alone made it worth the price tag. I found myself enjoying the final boss fight way more than Judgements' and LJ's final boss. Honestly 10/10

While I do agree with other posts stating that this content is overpriced given the length, I think this is an otherwise great expansion that would be an excellent purchase when on sale. The story is frankly better than the main story in Lost Judgement.

Bimmy Rolfe

I will start by saying, this is not worth 36.99 Canadian Dollars.

But, I enjoyed this DLC a lot, I found the story very entertaining, seeing Kiryu's styles from 0 return in Dragon Engine is great, and I love the little things such as the memory points, as they give some lore to Kaito, it's probably one of the best character driven stories by RGG yet. The issue is it's not long enough (a few hours, give or take), not enough content (no unique minigames, or side cases).

If you can get this for cheap, or bundled with Lost Judgment, go for it, but I don't think it's long enough or packed with enough content for it to be worth it's asking price, I got mine bundled with the Judgment collection.

Kaito Files is a great DLC, not only it fleshes out Kaito as a character and put him in a forefront of the story but his past and relationships with his former girlfriend and her son are really well explored. The combat, while not fully original, as Kaito borrows from Yakuza 0 and Kiwami's Kiryu moveset, still come off fresh with new move put here and there. With the focus on Kaito parrying and performing perfect guard, it plays a lot different than Yagami and makes for a fresh combat experience overall.RGG has always has a talent for storytelling in their mechanics and here in Kaito Files, it shows. Chase segment, for example, makes Kaito like an unstoppable force, barging in on obstacles and screaming at pedestrians to get out of the way. Kaito's investigation relies on his primal abilities such as smelling and hearing. These additions make for a different feel compared to Yagami. Yagami is methodical, smart and witty. Kaito on the other hand, is brash, straight to the point and somewhat naive. In addition to this, the descriptions of the skills is utilized to further tell Kaito's tales which is actually really clever. While only having a small playtime and no substories, Kaito Files managed to not only explore Kaito as a leading character, but also explored about his troubled relationship, his anxiety, Mikiko's state of mind, Jun's (Mikiko's son) fear. All while also delivering great boss fights who have their own motives and personalities. In short, Kaito Files is great. Really hope there will be Judgment 3 in the future with these characters mentioned or appear in the background, at the very least.

Short but really good ngl (a bit overpriced but just buy it on sale), kaito's styles are basically brawler and beast from yakuza 0 but with some other things added and those styles were already fun to use in 0 so I don't see the problem with ''recycling'' them, also never expected to fight a jacked hideo kojima.

Without spoiling, I think the main villain is just so absurdly evil and bad that it ruins the ending and makes the rest of the story worse. But if future big RGG DLCs were like this one, except with a better villain, it could be a great way to make these bite sized RGG stories.

The gameplay was still great, Kaito is still great, and I think this format could be good with a better story.

( full review with screenshots: https://www.gaming-parrot.com/2023/04/lost-judgment-kaito-files-review… )

The Kaito Files is a DLC expansion for Lost Judgment that is entirely focused on Kaito and his backstory. A case involving his almost-fiancee from 15 years ago and a teenager who might be his son pops up while every other character is conveniently occupied, so he's got to take the job by himself. The gameplay that follows isn't anything radically new for the series, but the father figure-son dynamic certainly wasn't in Judgment before and it's a dramatically more focused and efficient story than either of Yagami's main cases.

I got this through the bundle without knowing anything about it and, going in, I was pretty skeptical. Kaito's role in the main games is to be the big dumb idiot who punches things, and his role in Lost Judgment in particular is fairly minimal. Arguably the fact that they'd hardly given him any existing characterization meant he was ripe for this kind of expansion, but at the same time, I doubt there were many people clamoring for it.

Either way, the end result is stunningly successful and tells a story that's easily the best part of the 75-odd hours I spent with Lost Judgment as a whole. Outside of one extremely long block of cutscenes about halfway through, it moves along at a blistering clip to get everything done in four chapters and about 8 hours. It's hard to believe after pacing was one of my main complaints about the base game, but The Kaito Files could hardly have done better in that regard. It's always pulling you along to the next big story event and drops twists and turns at exactly the right times to keep things interesting. I could take or leave another game about Yagami, but I hope RGG finds a way to keep building on this plot line.

A lot of games would sacrifice all of their optional content to achieve that kind of pace, but this finds a good compromise between distractions and forced focus. There are no side quests or new minigames, but there are discoverables all over the map that unlock new skills, items, and brief memories from Kaito's past. Most of these aren't terribly difficult to find, and the rewards are generally satisfying. SP gains have been boosted to almost comical levels to make sure there's little need to grind, so you'll be able to start using those moves quickly. Best of all, there's a bonus boss fight you can access after unlocking every skill. It's nowhere near as over the top as an Amon battle, but it's still a fun reward for doing everything.

Still, it's not all positives. The awful stealth is back for some godforsaken reason. You get a brief QTE to block one hit KOs, at least, but that mostly just serves to emphasize how out of place and pointless the whole system is. I also had a few issues with investigation sections that required highlighting places that were either very small or that blended into the background. These aren't huge issues, but they're noticeable.

More Judgment and more Kaito-san is never wrong, but I find it hard to justify the price tag on this DLC. This is at the most an eight-hour story, with limited gameplay compared to the full game. New game+ is also absent, so at least get it as part of the collection for that bundle discount.

The regular price of 29.99 USD is absurd. However, this DLC often goes on sale, I got it for about 18.00 usd.

I thoroughly enjoyed this DLC, the story, the characters and the playstyle of Kaito that feels maybe more familiar with some versions of Kiryu than Yagami did made for a good time. It isn't all that long but, it every beat was fun. There are some collection tasks but, they can largely just be ignored--I think they're pretty tedious and a poor addition but, since they're optional, whatever. If you enjoyed the main game then this is an easy yes--on sale, not full price.

This DLC is good The pros are
- The story around kaito is really good, a solid backstory and a good ending
- The characters, One dude juiced up to become a chad, wont say who
- Bruiser and tank were very fun to play
Bad things
- Other than the Main stoy, there isnt that much else to do
- Because of this is also why theres no premuim adventure for Kaito, At least let us switch between yagami and Kaito if we have the Kaito Files DLC, in the main premuim adventure. Would be a great compromise.

Hush

This is worth it for the story and the ost but only on 50% off or more as you basically play crippled brawler and beast mode from 0 with Kaito.
Gameplay wise the rest is basically what Yagami did but harder or different in certain ways.
6 hours of content if you do everything, though I will admit this is probably one of the only stories where Ryu ga gotoku studios wrote a decent female character.

Jammin' Rabbit
Jammin' Rabbit

I thought I couldn't like Kaito more, but the DLC made him that much more memorable. This addition to the Judgment is absolutely fantastic. Music is as much of a banger as the OST from the main game. Unfortunately, there are no side quests or much else to do aside from following the primary plot, so it's pretty much a linear adventure. It would have been great to do some detective work as a muscle-bound beast because there's plenty of hilarity there, but I'm still plenty satisfied with the game.

Highly recommend buying on sale, because it is definitely not worth it full-priced.

I'll be honest, I was pretty dissapointed with something similar like this which is the Majima Saga in Yakuza Kiwami 2. Although you get to play as Majima and get to experience a pretty, worthwhile story, the flaws of that game severely outweighs the pros. Very shallow combat, having a lite version of Majima's Legend style in Yakuza 0, dead open world, and also nothing to motivate you to venture more like upgrades, exp, etc, other than the story. Although I like the story in the end, I do not want to play more of that game.

WITH THAT BEING SAID HOLY DAYUM THIS DLC IS AMAZING!

I am going to gush alot about this game. Kaito is one of the best protagonist in this franchise and I like to his character being explored more. I love the story here alot, being one of the best the dev team have done, and weirdly enough I commend them to have this much quality for only a Downloadable Content. Kaito was always one of the more interesting character in the Judgment games but this DLC made me want him to have his own game. Either make him a second playable character in the next Judgment game or have him have his own spinoff. (Spinoff for a spinoff?)

I don't want to delve in much on the story since it is amazing and no spoilers. But what I can delve into more is the gameplay. Kaito essentially have to styles, both of them are borrowed from Kiryu's Brawler Style and Beast Style. Ngl, the combat is like a partial of perfection to Yakuza 0's combat. There are things to upgrade and unlock with exp, giving you more reason to play more (unlike the Majima Saga). Although that is the extent of the gameplay, no substories or other sidestory. The combat is more different than Yagami's speedy style and other than being a breath of fresh air, its also abit of homage to the older games.

This DLC offers 6 - 7 hours of content which is worth it in my opinion. I dunno, maybe I just liked the story too much. I did not expect like it as much as I am now.

A little boring and overpriced. Worth $19.99 or less. The final sequence and cutscenes were pretty cool.

Overall, it reminds me of the Majima Saga but without Majima and it isn't included with the base game. So... It's worse, though it's lengthier. But I'm biased because I LOVE Yakuza 0 and I am a Majima fanboy lol.

Don't let all the memes fool you.

This isn't up to the usual RGG Studio's standard.

Fighting styles are basically a copy & paste from Kiryu's Brawler and Beast in 0. These movesets are outdated in Dragon Engine, as most powerful enemies rely on lightning fast attack that takes 30% of your health bar, you can't effectively dodge behind opponent's back to get a combo in as they turn back to you very quickly.

Plot wise it is acceptable but the delivery is terrible, the characters have to explain very simple logic with tons of dialogues for half an hour, not to mention they even enter those slow-speaking dialogue sequences in the middle of the fight, where you are simply not in the mood to listen to those crap as the plot is just so obvious there is no way you would need any reminder.

As someone who got platinum in most RGG Studio's games on PS4, I would simply say don't buy this unless it is at least 50% off.

Pasta Man: Rii…

A good expansion to the base game. The story has a lot of Yakuza 1 vibes (in a good way) and Kaito worked incredible as the protagonist. Brawler and beast from 0 are even more fun to use in this and as usual the Sega sound team doesn't miss. It's very pricey for a standalone expansion that's about 8-10 hours and lacks side content outside of some collectibles and an optional super boss. But considering it comes with the collection for free, it's an easy recommendation to spend your time on this.

Pocakmatador
Pocakmatador

It's a bit short for 30 euros.

There could have been 1 more chapter or 2-3 new minigames for the price.

Though it's still great with an amazing story and really great gameplay, the battles are really fun and all the bosses feel unique.

Seneschal

I don't know if it's worth 30 buckaroonies, but I got it was part of the bundle and I thought it was excellent. Fleshes Kaito out more as a character, and deals with some of the stuff touched in the main Yakuza series (loyalty to the family/lifestyle over your 'normal' average life) and we get to see Kaito come to grips with it. Brawler and Tank as fun as hell and make remember Y0 fondly.

+ Story is quite good and is a roller coaster of emotions.A well-deserved happy ending as well which is a refreshing change of pace compared to previous RGG stories.
+ Fog (that awesome long battle theme that wasn't used that much in the main game) gets its revenge here.
+ Those new BGMs sound awesome as well.

? Recyled Yakuza 0 fighting styles for the most part, but they feel fun due to how Lost Judgment's Dragon Engine combat works.

- Short. Everything can be completed in about 7 hours, including optional stuff.

Murdock

It's good, but only worth it if you get this as part of the bundle. Kaito's fighting style is just a copy of 0 Kiryu's brawler and beast but still fun to play. OSTs and story are not as great as the main game but still good. I really like the character design of some of the ones who are introduced in this DLC. The DLC does show some new sides and the past of Kaito which is great.

eithersummer
eithersummer

tl;dr it's a real shame this is the only one of the DLCs that didn't come bundled with the port and the $29.99 price seems rather egregious considering that's more than half the price of the base game for way less than half the stuff. that being said it makes kaito's gameplay rather different from the base game and develops kaito's character further so it may be worth a buy on sale.

PERFORMANCE/GRAPHICS/TECHNICAL

There are no differences in performance or the appearance of the game between the Lost Judgment and this DLC. Anything that is true about Lost Judgment's performance or graphics is true for The Kaito Files.

COMBAT:

Kaito fights like Kiryu. Specifically, he has two styles, both of which are somewhat modified versions of Kiryu's styles in Yakuza 0. It's a pretty efficient way of giving depth to Kaito's combat without having to make a new style, and it's fitting with how one would expect someone with his physique to fight. Kaito has his own (smaller) set of skills to unlock and they are for the most part different than those Yagami uses. He even has his own secret superboss to fight at the end.

That being said, I thought his "Bruiser" style (Kiryu's Brawler) was considerably more useful than his "Tank" (Kiryu's Beast), by virtue of Bruiser being faster and the damage per hit not being significantly different. Also, Bruiser has the Tiger Drop.

EXPLORATION/SIDE CONTENT

Kaito cannot go to Ijincho. I suppose putting him in all of the Ijincho activities would be a massive doozy.

Kaito has his own set of collectables. He can unlock moves by looking at things and get items by listening for cats and sniffing garbage. It's basically the base game's squirrels.

That's pretty much it aside from the secret superboss I mentioned before. He can't do much else aside from a limited slate of minigames which is fine but not "30 dollars" fine.

PLOT:

The storyline is not as deep as the base game's and lacks most of the convolutions (not that it has an opportunity to get deep or too crazy - it's a mere 4 chapters long) but it touches on a somewhat similar theme as well as some themes more particular to the Yakuza series (not Judgment), especially 1 & 2, and introduces some new backstory and personality to Kaito. It fleshes him out massively compared to his treatment in the base game and Judgment.

That being said, this is very much a Kaito storyline and you will not see any of Yagami (aside from like 2 text messages). I thought that purely focusing the plot on him was a good choice and allowed the character to express himself independent of Yagami. If you wanted elaboration on the bond between the detectives you will not be the happiest of campers, however.

Once again SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios weave together a compelling narrative and deep yet stylish and simple gameplay to construct a dense, driven, and engaging game.Thank you SEGA for porting this game to PC so i could witness Kiryu's journey as he travels through the complex worlds of an ex-yakuza lifestyle while also having to deal with an ex-lover situation. Kaito Files is actually phenomenal. While a bit short, I still absolutely love Kaito's styles basically being beefed up Brawler + Beast from Yakuza 0. The story is also REALLY good, despite only being a few chapters long.

And the final boss being shirakaba was something I did not see coming at all. I originally thought this was a scripted "lose" fight considering shirakaba regenerates ALL of his health after you lower it to zero, and I loved that. Especially with the task being "Defend Your Honour With Your Fists" instead of the usual antagonistic "Defeat XYZ". Even his theme is easily one of my favourites. It's not a super aggressive theme or whatnot, but it fits the scenario perfectly. It's a duel between two chads for the love of a girl, like it legitimately is one of the best RGG final bosses / themes, and I was so glad that they gave Kaito a good ending.

This DLC as a whole encompasses why I love this series so much, and I legitimately got quite emotional during it. I don't think I've ever played a game series where I've been so passionately into it, and Kaito files is a near perfect dlc / mini adventure

Nedur Frog
Nedur Frog

In this DLC you play as Kaito, who has gameplay of Kiryu's Y0 brawler and beast style in dragon engine, and it actually feels so satisfying with the increased attack speed.

It focuses on the backstory of Kaito, since there's no side quests in this DLC the story feels tightly tied together. Tedious part such as chasing and stealth still remain, but you get to see Kaito handle them differently compared to Yagami, that's where you can know more about Kaito's personality.
The characters are well written, Everyone has their own motivation that's not unclear.

It could be a bit overpriced to purchase this DLC alone consider the contents are 100%able in 10 hours. (Go for The Judgment Collection! this DLC holds some achievements itself so if you want to platinum LJ you gotta get it)

Spoiler : The reason I like Judgment's main antagonist the most is that they commit vicious acts themselves, either by deceiving or murdering, solidly builds up their cold-blood personality instead of some sort of timid high class culprit, and that actually makes Kyoya memorable to me.
I love both the last boss and ending so much, men beating each other for pure reason, use fist to convey all their emotions. Shirakaba fights even though he knew the woman he love is not gonna fall for her, he fights to prove all the efforts he put into protecting the one he loves isn't merely talking, the spirit is what makes the fight so hype. It's fresh for Judgment and for Yakuza in aspects of how the ending goes.

Kain Klarden

In many ways this DLC feels like a much better take on what original Judgment established and follows a simpler, but still surprising short story, where players get to play as Kaito. It does feel as a DLC, as it’s far simpler in many ways to the main game, but it has enough content of its own to feel really fun, it tweaks mechanics in ways that feel great. And in some aspects it even “fixes” the problems that the main game created.

Getting the main game just for this DLC would be silly. But if you do get the main game, definitely grab this one too, especially if you feel like Lost Judgment is lacking the charm original Judgment had.

This DLC proves that Kaito is literally an animal xD. This is a standalone story from the main game focused on Kaito only and Yagami isn't around. It has probably the most wholesome ending of all the Yakuza stories. Kaito's gameplay is taken straight from Yakuza 0, with his two fighting styles being based on Kiryu's brawler and beast styles. And his "detective" skills is him activating dog powers like enhanced smell and hearing.

Definitely give this a go if you liked the main game. You get this for free if you buy the Judgment bundle.

Lasts about 5 hours.
Its a neat small side story of Kaito which lasts 4 Chapters only. You actually get to play as Kaito which is neat, but he doesnt offer as much as Yagami does in comparision. Just 2 Fighting Styles and the Gadgets for investigating stuff are changed but act the same.
There are also no Substorys / Side Cases in this one.

fun fact: kaito has a bigger ass than he does in the original judgment

on a serious note though, this dlc is great. side content is lacking as i kinda expected, really just being a scavenger hunt and a re-skinned tesso for what would be kaito's amon fight, but everything about the main story is really good, and has what is probably the most unique final boss in all of RGG since shirakaba is the only final boss in the whole franchise that is not an antagonist

Ever wonder what Kiryu would somewhat feel like if he were in the dragon engine with Yakuza 0 stances?

Welcome to this pretty darn short DLC expansion featuring Kaito. For the price of 30 bucks, you can play as Kaito to find his... Almost to be wife? With his.... son? By beating anyone who tries to stop you with Brawler, and Tank. Its a 4 chapter DLC with decent length.

My head cannon is Kaito saw Kiryu fighting in the streets one time and thought to himself:
