If you liked West of Loathing, this is more of the same. The same ridiculous writing, the same lightweight RPG mechanics and the same surprisingly well-done puzzles, some of the ones here actually being very difficult. My playthrough worked out at about 4 hours, which I'd say makes it well worth the price, but I'm sure you could make it last a fair bit longer if you looked for more secrets. Definitely worth it for a bit more of the delight that is West of Loathing.

This DLC gets my most middling possible thumbs up. The length is ok by DLC standards, but it's missing the base game's replay value and the content is not really distributed right.

The DLC consists almost entirely of a series of extremely elaborate puzzles (of the adventure game style, not the "push these boxes" type). The puzzles can be conquered in any order, with combat presented as a "skip this puzzle" option. If you opt to solve all the puzzles and get the best ending you'll be able to count the number of combats on your fingers, and if you opt to solve everything with violence you'll skip almost the entire thing. Almost every puzzle has only one solution, unlike in the base game, which robs it of the base game's massive replay value. And all the enemies are scaled to your level in a way that makes any combat you do engage in un-fun (ie both sides can 1-or-2-shot the other).

On the other hand, the writing is really good. The game's signature humor is here in full force. And each of the ghosts' puzzles is a complex, multi-step logic puzzle which will really test your brain. You'll probably need to peek at a guide at a few points but it's still a great adventure.

If you're ok with an extremely combat-light adventure, go ahead and pick this up. If you're expecting something that's basically just more of the original campaign, and/or you really liked its combat, you may be better off just replaying the base game.

Its just like the original game, if you like the game play and humor of the original content you'll like this but if you didn't then don't bother buying it cause you wont like it.

A sprawling mansion full of ghosts and clever puzzles, and lots of new jokes. Great fun, highly recommend.

Probably one of the best DLC's ever. Its got the perfect blend of WOL humor, amazing puzzles, awesome items, and fun lore, rolled into one. The Hedge, the Manor, everything in this is sooo fun. I had spend all day on this and I'm almost temped to replay the whole game to just play through the manor again, 10/10

Whelp, I've finished this DLC, fully pacifist. I've gotta say, it's pretty great. The puzzle are all amazing except for one or two which are very easy to get stuck on, there are (obviously) tons more jokes, and near everything is quite intuitive and fun to figure out. 9/10

I was hoping for a dlc that would add more classes to the game, but this is pretty grape too.

I really enjoyed this DLC! It works as basically a long standalone side quest. There's more jokes, more misadventures, more combat, more puzzles, more characters, and some pretty awesome stat-boosting items to be had. It took me about five hours by the time I went through it with three different characters to get both endings (I messed up the first time).

I've edited part of my review because there was an issue with one of the ending achievements, but it has now been fixed, according to a patch update. But just in case it's not still not mentioned in-game, heads up, there are *three* possible ways to end things with the final character.

Overall, a great addition to a ridiculously fun game!

A few more hours of more good West of Loathing content. If you liked the base game you're going to like this. You get a nice dense puzzle filled area, or the option to go in guns blazin' if you wish. Writing is still top notch and the music is fantastic.

I loved this DLC. The plot is as simple as always an the puzzles are as interesting as in main game. This DLC is just B O O tiful. (Sorry for scare.) Be prepared to some s B O O ky ghosts and some new jokes.

You know all the things that made the base game great? The humour, the puzzles, the exploration and the fights you can never get bored of? It's all here, condensed into a wonderfully designed new location.

The puzzles are interesting as always, but I especially liked how different all the ghost fights were from each other, so even a kill-everything playthrough doesn't get boring.

This expansion is well worth its cheap price, I highly recommend it to anyone who loved the base game.

Side note: I can't stop seeing BOO written all around me when I walk down streets, please send help

Played a bit of stickfigure cowboys over the summer and I really loved it, but I got sidetracked and never came back. Now that the DLC (which can be played right after making a new character just fine) is out i've popped back in and have been having a blast solving silly puzzles and being a silly walking stick figure cowboy.

It's more West of Loathing, and if you like the humour and playstyle, you're gonna enjoy Reckonin' at Gun Manor. Plain and simple.

I think this DLC is worth $5, but I also think the base game is worth far more than the $11 they sell it for.

There are lots of good jokes, Easter eggs, puzzles, and some new achievements.

As far as cons, I think there are a couple complaints that could be made. There are essentially two paths, violently taking out the ghosts, and peacefully resolving issues with the ghosts. My first time through I went the violent route. It was over quickly and pretty under-whelming. By contrast, the non-violent route is where the vast majority of the puzzles and other content in this DLC are, you also get better rewards.

Some of the "puzzles" are a little two adventure gamey. At one point you have to "kill" a certain food item and the method for doing so isn't clued very well and is absolutely not intuitive. When I get stuck and have to look up a solution, my reaction should be "ugh, I'm so dumb, I should have known that on my own," and not "wow, that's bullshit and I never would have thought of it without just trial and error of mashing everything together until something works."

There is a temporary partner you get for the DLC and there is a system in place to upgrade her combat skills, but there's no incentive to do so since the DLC is so heavily favored to the non-violent playstyle. If you're going for the (optimal) non-violent resolutions, you don't use her to fight ghosts, which is her primary strength. She won't fight any of the spiders, so you end up with a system where you are upgrading her combat ability with very little chance to use the upgrades. Feels like a waste when the two systems are working against each other.

It also suffers the problem a lot of "open world game" DLC has, which is that it is released so far after the base game that I've already 100%ed the base game, so the rewards for the DLC feel kind of underwhelming, and I felt kind of overpowered compared to the content I was up against. This is a problem games like Skyrim and Fallout also suffer from, the DLC is probably best enjoyed when incorporated into a fresh game and not an old save.

That said, I still enjoyed this DLC and would gladly continue to pay for more should they make more.

Kyther

Humorous puzzles, good fun, time well spent.

When do all the new tracks/sounds from the DLC get released for purchase? I'm a particular fan of the piano rendition of the clown music box.

Yirggzmb
Yirggzmb

The DLC continues in the same humor vein as the rest of the game - silly, weird, often punny... It's great. The new area took me about 4 hrs to solve everything peacefully, though I'd imagine the content would be a lot shorter if you just murder everything in your way instead. There's also new music (!) and new achievements, which is great. The vast majority of puzzles are done right at the manor itself, and nothing requires you to have explored too far so you could probably do a lot of it with a new character if you wanted.

Overall, definitely recommend it if you enjoy the main game.

ADDENDUM

While I'm leaving my review as-is, apparently the DLC content is supposed to scale with your character, as I've read someone's post claiming it to be easier with a fresh new character. In actual fact, my personal experience wildly diverged - on my most advanced save I found it a breeze, but struggled slightly with a slightly less advanced save that was made as more of a speedrun towards the credits for achievements.

Pros

A relatively self-contained area (save for a small part, but...you'll figure that out later on) full of quests and combats (some if not all optional)
More puzzles to solve
The writing is still impressive and deeply humourous

Cons

Sort of requires decent progress made in the main story, and cannot necessarily be jumped into immediately
Multiple save files required for every achievement
(minor) Still a large part of it deals with fetch quests, but that's already a main feature of the base game

They surprise-dropped this DLC out of relatively nowhere. I was expecting the DLC for a while, just not at so sudden a date.

It's a brilliant petite experience filled with tons of intermingling quests and all. I took about 4 hours to finish all the content, which is pretty good value for money. Some of the puzzles can get tricky at times if you don't know what to look for, though, but on the whole they aren't that difficult. There's a few silly attempts at jumpscares but thanks to the somewhat cheery veneer of the (as usual) legendary stick figure art, they aren't actually scary.

The best part is there's no real correct way of going about this - in fact, there's about 3 (4?) ways of dealing with things, a fully pacifist way (with a best ending), a fully violent way, and somewhere in between. Both ways have their own quirks, and it's always a blast having to figure out what you need to do to solve each path. The violent path does require you to be somewhat leveled up though, so you cannot quite jump into it straightaway. (I'm not entirely sure if the combats near the start can be skipped, but those also require a decent amount of stats, or you're going to get creamed.) Also, I recommend full-committing to a singular path instead of mixing things up arbitrarily, especially if you hunt achievements.

When to buy

If you don't already own the base game, get the bundle. Else, it's already worth it at full-price, especially for completionists.

Genuinely smiled at each "BOO" because of just how effective they were portraying the genuine silliness of the KoL/WoL world. I am so beyond happy with Asymmetric's West of Loathing (and this DLC of course).

I truly hope Asymmetric pursues a larger publisher and budget for their next release, because I would LOVE to see something like Kingdom of Loathing on a grander scale.

DLC was a solid 8/10 for me. Thank you!

BOO!

A short few hours of absolute fun, granted I brought in a character from one of my completely OP runs but there were very few forced battles, which meant that I spent most of the time with it enjoying the puzzles and characters (even if I never bothered to get their names...)

If you enjoyed the base West of Loathing game but utterly despised the world map, then this is the DLC for you. Gun Manor is easy to get around and compact but full enough of laughs to keep you going.

Great DLC. Adds a new fairly sizable area to explore (NOT a new map region, FYI) . Still has that super funny Loathing humor throughout, and adds a lot of fun new puzzles to solve while you explore Gun Manor. Since the DLC scales with you, you can start it pretty much whenever you want; you can even leave the manor and come back to it if you want to play the rest of the game or get some supplies.

Well worth the 5 bucks. West of Loathing is one of my all-time favorite games, and this DLC does it justice. Definitely worth the $5.

An excellent murder mystery DLC where you need to solve the fates of 13 ghosts (or kill them all...) , with the same witty and interesting dialogue and environmental humor in the base game. Do yourself a favor - don't look up any walkthroughs and just go for it. The payoff is extremely satisfying!

Played through this DLC on a post-game character, and this was just a really good time, i really liked all of this. Also, the items you get out of it are really nice, so maybe this could be good on characters that haven't beaten the game yet!

Lots of fun, some replayability, but short.

Pros:
* More beautifully irreverent Asymmetric humor.
* Not hard to stomp all over things, if you finished the main game.
* Two playthru styles, like w/ WoL's main game - solution and combat.

Cons:
* Only ~3 hrs for a playthru (I AFK'd a bit - because reasons).

TL;DR: If you liked WoL, buy it - maybe on sale, its value vs price is debatable, but I haven't seen it go on sale yet.

If you liked the base game, this is a no brainer. it can be very short depending on how you approach it, something like 2-5 hours i'd say. Don't feel bad if you have to whip out a guide for a few puzzles, a lot of them require backtracking to places you might not remember or looking through your items

Oh My. I thought I hit the jackpot of fun with West of Loathing. I'm realllly enjoying Reckonin' at Gun Manor. It is very easy to get to via the ghostly stagecoach in Dirtwater and you can easily return to the main game, too.

I like how most of the game is contained in and around the mansion. Next time thru though, I'll write down where the quest givers are located and what the quest are since I found quest items and now have to look for the people to give them to.

I highly recommend this DLC as well as the base game.

Don't start it thinking you will be able to stop after a half hour. You can stop, but you won't want to. It's that fun.

Yendor
Yendor

More of the goodness of the base game --- this one adds a new (99%) self-contained area you can visit anytime. It scales in difficulty/reward based on how far you have progressed the main game.

I'd say this one adds ~3 hours to the main campaign.

eris skathi
eris skathi

A great expansion to the world of West of Loathing, although it is very short. Unlike the main game, where it takesfour or five playthroughs to experience everything, two characters can get you the full experience. The take the front seat in this DLC, instead of story, although it is very much there, with every character having some form of backstory (mostly).

Balrog Son of Nelgar
Balrog Son of Nelgar

The DLC is great. It's the same wacky antics with a self-contained story.
I would suggest a character that's at least mid way through the game. Playing with a character that has finished the game makes it easiest (the items you get are awesome, but generally useless if you beat the game already). Plus, there's a nice surprise if you got all the spittoons, including the one in Fricso.
Overall, I'm quite pleased for $5.
Your mileage will vary depending on how good you are at this game and which path you decide to take. Most people seem to report about 4+ hours, I did it in a little over 3, but I have beaten this game about 3 times before I started the DLC.
In short, buy it! It's good.

A worthy addition to the game, albeit not a terribly long one. I ran through it in a few hours, and it probably would have gone faster with brute force instead of solving all the puzzles. I now go to repeat it with another character to use brute force.

if you enjoyed West of Loathing, you will enjoy Gun Manor. It costs less than you have paid for lunch. Buy the expansion and enjoy it.

Blue Shadow
Blue Shadow

A short expansion on the West of Loathing game, full of the same brand of humor. Good fun for those that liked the original game. Also contains the best jump scares í've seen in any game.

Only flaw is that I got emotionally hurt by a spittoon.

DALCOhstangultion
DALCOhstangultion

I'm Recommending the "Reckonin' at Gun Manor" DLC to the "West of Loathing" base game. If anything, the humor is even better in this DLC than it is in the base game. But, the only significant difference is that this one is more puzzle oriented than RPG/action oriented (but my run through was one where I had to find a way to not kill the ghosts). For a near-100% Achievement run (I got the Achievement for not killing the ghosts -- I still have to do another run and kill them for the final Achievement), it took me 6.3 hours. So, even at the list price of almost $5, the game's dollar-per-hour ratio is good. A great DLC to a great game.

Quite a cool little dlc, adds a new location with some more funny jokes and good little story and new weapons and other useful items.
Its a bit short though, took me around 3-4 hours although you could probably get through it a lot quicker, just depends if you want to just kill everything or not. Only big issue for me its way too easy, if you already beat the base game your character is so overpowered that there's never really any significant challenges. Overall though if you want more west of loathing then you should definitely pick this up. 8/10

The original was an instant classic and this holds up every bit to its greatness. This DLC is brilliant. Although a bit short (around 2 hours of playtime), it's decently replayable with very brain-fizzling puzzles, combined with the spectacular puns and jokes, just like in the regular game. For only four quid, I'd say it's really worth it, especially if you loved the regular game.

If you agree that the non-DLC game is worth at least the $20 asking price, then you will likewise find that this DLC is also worth at least the $5 asking price.

NOTE: I believe the most powerful "individual" in the entire game is in this DLC, and you won't know it's them until they've already killed slaughtered you. So if your the achievement-hunter type, then it's best to get the achievement "The Really Hard Way" BEFORE doing this DLC :)

Falaal

I've paid more money for full games that were shorter and less fun than this DLC. The music is great, the art is great, the dialog is great. The combat route, while a lot shorter than the pacifist route, is still a lot of fun. Some of the puzzle solutions are pretty obscure, and not in a fun way, but that issue is greatly overshadowed by the hysterical writing. If you liked the base game I highly recommend the DLC.

More excellence from West of Loathing. Well written, genuinely funny content with clever puzzles and nicely designed content. This is what all DLC should be: Pure content that adds on to the original game and improves upon it.

Nauticowl

You know it's some bomb DLC when you play it while playing the game, tell your friends about how cool the mansion was, and then get made fun of because they didn't believe it exists... Fleshes out well with the story, it's just as goofy as the rest of the game, and meshes together really well. Plus the DLC has some great items for early game, so it helps out a lot.

Not a great review, really, but if you loved West of Loathing then absolutely buy it! It's more West of Loathing!

Typical Mook
Typical Mook

A fantastic addition to West of Loathing, adding an entire new self contained area to the game, with it's own companion. The stellar writing and combat returns, it's more of what made the main game excellent, done in such a way as to not interfere or clash with the base game (Think Fallout New Vegas's expansions.) Not only is the new area legitimately pretty fun to play (It's basically a Loathing take on Luigi's Mansion) But it's actually possible to go through the ENTIRE THING without fighting a single battle, should you want to! It's more of a game I absolutely love, and if any more DLC were to come out, I'd be buying it day one

Spaghetti Golem
Spaghetti Golem

A great DLC, funny (obviously), not lacking in length like I expected it to be either, well worth the price. Interesting to note, normally fights in this game are the simple "give up" option to puzzles, but here fights are all unique enough that they can also be considered a puzzle or something you need to prepare in a specific way for, like raising spooky resist high to survive a 500 damage hit at the start of one fight. Its a lot like Kingdom of Loathing's harder boss fights, its not just higher number wins. Its a much better fit for the game, the combat always felt a bit like it was part of the game because well, you need an RPG to have combat, right? I hope the next Loathing game follows Gun Manors style of more meaningful fights like this. So if you get the DLC make sure to go through twice, one where you save them the other where you kick their ass.

VinTJ

Reckonin' at Gun Manor is roughly 3-4 hours of additional West of Loathing goodness, with the type of jokes you all know and love, but like the base game, there's little things here and there that I feel could be improved. The items you get and the combat difficulty apparently scales with your character (although there actually IS a limit on this, so if you have 100%-ed the base game and kind of grinded for EXP too much like I did you would then find it too easy), so it is definitely a decent addition for the mid-game.

But speaking of things that could be improved, the first one is that despite some of the peaceful side-quest solutions being solved with skillchecks, one situation in particular comes to mind. The final step for the "chili" quest for the hungry ghost can be done using the Ruthless Perk as an alternative. That's nice and funny and I tried it out, it works well. However, the other counterpart of the perk, Honorable, comes to mind for me at the end of the game after solving all the ghosts. Like, I totally expected Honorable to be useful somewhere, and upon seeing the dialogue options at the very end of the DLC, I get disappointed. Regarding the Final bad guy, Chet Bullet. Because you could choose to fight him, or... let him go.

What does that remind you of? That's right, the first sleeping Fricker Boy in the town of Boring Springs. You could let Thud walk away and get the "honorable" perk for giving him a chance to be a better man in the base game. There is no such skillcheck followed by the appropriate similar dialogue I expect when I try to let the final bad guy Chet in this DLC go away. Which makes no sense to me. An Honorable character should be able to give a motivating, last-parting-words that changes-a-man dialogue if you let Chet go, followed with your Temporary-New-Ghostbusters' Pardner and your Lifelong Pardner's approval of your choice instead when you are an honorable person. This does not happen in my second playthrough. When I let Chet go away, both Pardners are disappointed in me for doing so. In addition, the final Cutscene addition about the manor in Frisco after completing the DLC seems to play with no music for me and only talks about the fate of the manor itself, without any word about Chet whatsoever when I let him go. Maybe do the same thing with Chet as is done with Norton if we let him go? I feel like that's the best way to go about it. The music resumes after any cutscenes about the manor though so I'm glad that wasn't broken.

Other than that, the music is nice and fits well with the game, as expected. There's one moment in particular when one of the default exploration music from the base game is re-used in the manor as an objection theme. It was great. When it happened I find myself smiling on the fact that I never realized how much it would fit as that kind of theme.

The combat is also great in general. Not only does the stat try to match up your character as stated, but the enemies do some new moves I haven't seen before that makes it a little more interesting as a turn-based puzzle, despite being definitely easier than the Fort Memoriam Cow Battle Reenactments. It's nice to be able to get some fights where I'm not just mindlessly winning in 15 seconds and I'm a little scared for my HP.

The dictionary definitely could use some improvements though. Regarding the peaceful solution to some of the quests that do need you to input words in the dictionary, I feel like it would be a nice addition if the dictionary added a monologue at the beginning of the interaction with "You have a feeling that you're supposed to be looking for a particular word in here for the sake of a certain ghost" when there is an available sidequest that requires it and the player is at that step. There's a total of TWO sidequests that need this dictionary to solve peacefully, so I feel like it's somewhat crucial when a player can be stuck twice. However to be fair, the fact that they added plenty of alternative spellings of words for one of the quests helps make it quite easy already. Other than that, some words and definitions that would be interesting to add come to mind, and I get disappointed when I search for them and it only shows a default randomly generated definition as a result like any other word.

In particular, I feel like the classes of the game should be in the dictionary. Definition of Cow-Puncher, Bean Slinger and Snake Oiler definitely would be fun to see, even if it would be a simple copy-paste definition of them from the first time you dreamed at your starting farm home. Definition of stats like Grit, Gumption, Glamour, or the Dialogue Skillcheck Bypasses like Outfoxin, Hornswoggle and Intimidatin' would also be funny to see since they all basically have respective definitions in the character sheet. And finally, the definition of a Pardner should also be there, since upon leaving Boring Springs in the main game, the narrator defined it quite lengthily; "Somebody to share the trail with. Somebody you can rely on for emotional and combat support". Seeing as Flo the temporary Pardner responds to you when you look up certain words like "ghost" or whatever, being able to look up a word in the dictionary that lets our Real Pardner also respond sounds nice. It disappoints me that there is no such definition.
Other words like Cows or Clowns would also be interesting to see since they're such big-ish things in the base games with full fledged whole questline and all that. Other than that, "Rumor" being defined as "news from an unverified source" would be a nice callback to Doc Alice's early conversation with the protagonist. But alas, they're not there, again.

But obviously, as indie developers with limited budget and time, I understand that these are more of suggestions instead of legitimate important criticisms to address towards them, so don't let these dictionary things bother with your decision to get the DLC. It's already plenty of fun and not much else can be said about it.

One last actual legit criticism though, regarding the super long and arguably hardest ghost to deal with peacefully, the Law/Attorney ghost. It's an interesting reference and actually fun, but the last step could use one more nudge in the right direction. When you're supposed to go out of the manor and back out to the large map outwest. Sure, it's definitely intuitive to ask the barman in Dirtwater about Macready since they hear a lot of things... that and the fact that the way you enter the DLC is also located there. But the last dialogue you have with the Attorney Ghost herself is only "maybe that's what I'll do then" regarding locating Macready. Sure, you could re-approach and enter conversation with her again that gives a slight hint. "Any idea where I could find Macready" will be answered with As far away from Frisco. But I think the initial mention of the fact that this whole old thing happens in Frisco might cause some players to actually Try asking around in Frisco. And that's the "wrong solution" because the barman in Frisco has no options at all about Macready. I think they could've added a LITTLE bit of a similar nudge from the Attorney to Barman in Frisco, seeing as Frisco is somewhat lacking anyways if not for the recent addition of Geologist Girl. Asking about "Macready from years ago" to the Frisco barman should atleast make him say something like "Well, I figure if he was a wanted criminal here who escaped the gallows, maybe he wouldn't want to stick around nearby when escaping, no? Probably Frisco is the last place you should try looking for him, since he would get as far away from here as possible. Try Dirtwater".

TL;DR More West of Loathing funny good time for 4 hours. Get it if you have and love the base game.

It's a bunch more hours of what you've come to expect from West of Loathing. You can jump into the expansion at any point in the game, too.

I really enjoyed West of Loathing, but this DLC felt more like a poorly made point-and-click game. In order to get the good ending, there's a lot of a lot of annoying back and forth and vague clues to solutions that aren't clear. Very frustrating, I ended up following a guide for pretty much the whole thing. Would not recommend.

Short and sweet, but absolutely worth it. Took some time to work through some of the puzzles, but it was fun! Can't wait to get back to it and try doing things another way in the future!

Do not really know how anyone has given this a positive review. It is super short like 1-2 hours max and yeah it is only cheap but it feels it. The whole section is a bore with random puzzles that need looking up as you essentially just keep wandering around hoping to find the thing you need. Not sure why they didn't give us what we all wanted a new character class so we can do the game again with a new player.
