The engine seems versatile enough to do some very creative games. The documentation is rather sparse, amounting to a wiki with general descriptions of things, one line tooltips within the engine itself, some example games, and a few videos. I believe they are working on more documentation, specifically for their visual scripting. Nuances, though, you will need to discover those for yourself through tinkering and seeing.... what does this do, or how can I do this? They are helpful in their discord with questions for these things, and I am enjoying tinkering with this engine.

It's easy to pick up and put together some kind of game using provided templates. It's also light on your computer, easy to navigate and find what you're trying to do. The community is helpful and friendly, though small.

Especially for the money, I don't think you'll find a program more fun to use when putting together your games. I haven't found a more flexible engine (Short of maybe Unity, which still requires extra licensing) to quickly piece together scenes and basic mechanics to sketch out game ideas without diving into a million menus. They don't even have to be simple prototypes, as I am also able to implement complex mechanics in no time at all using easy drag and drop scripting. I have found that my only limitation so far has been my own terrible math skill.

The included demo projects and sample files are great and somewhat informative, but could certainly use some clarification. (I believe there is supposed to be some updated content coming soon that may fix that) Either way, the included documentation and link to the wiki contain loads of helpful information to get people started. It is also similar enough to a number of other game maker software titles that it isn't too challenging to pick up if you have ever worked with another game engine, coded your own, etc. I feel like newcomers could benefit from some kind of production workflow explanation to get started, but there is a lot of information on google that got me started just fine.

Basically, everything is self contained within GG Maker, and you could potentially build your entire game (graphics and all) right inside the engine without ever touching another program. The built in sprite editor is nothing fancy, but it certainly does the job. And that is one of my favorite aspects of GG Maker/Engine 001, I think. Tile editor, sprite editor, animation sequencers, interface designer, build sheets for fonts, built in pitch variation on audio, 2D/3D camera views, lighting, etc. Of course, it seems the main purpose is to be an Action RPG engine, it truly doesn't have to be anything of the sort. A downside being a large number of finished (and an even larger number of unfinished) games available out there tend to be formulaic Action RPGs using the stock graphics and little imagination. But there are a few really great looking releases that showcase just what you can pull off with a bit of patience and thought.

One time purchase gets you a fully licensed 2D/3D game engine with a ton of features, the ability to import every resource yourself or design your own inside the creator, construct a game from the ground up with no coding knowledge, release for Android, HTML5, and PC. Top down, side scrollers, platformers, isometric, first person, third person, action rpg, turn based, tactical, etc. You can use the built in systems and make a simple Rpg, like anyone with RPG Maker, or you can design your entire game to the extent of your creativity. YOU have to design the systems for YOUR game, but 001 Game Creator allows you to do it like nothing I have ever used before. Highly recommended.

Huge range of functionality! Can produce a wide range of games, 2D, 3D, Menu/Text based. Exports to Android, HTML5 and Windows, uncommon for a lot of hobby style game engines. FANTASTIC team working on it, quick to fix bugs and great built in bug reporting system. Totally recommend from series game dev teams to the hobbiest.

This is by far the best engine I've come across regarding ease of use and capabilities.

~Pros

-Friendly environment(simplistic UI)

-Vast amount of starting content(graphics, music)

-Coding is not required(the engine uses a simple, flexible and powerful visual scripting system)

-Excellent and highly responsive support on the forums, especially on their Discord channel(just don't be impatient and get mad with those who are trying to help you just because your issue didn't get resolved immediately, they're only humans you know)

-You can prototype games extremely fast

~Cons

Haven't really found anything yet.

~Limitations

-Cannot create VR games

-Exporting options are currently limited to PC, Android, iOS, HTML5

-Very simple lighting and custom shaders

-Even though you can create 3D games, the map editor does not include terrain elevation tools

-It does not support highly detailed 3D models(max 4000 tri polys)

Its fine and all, but how do you get the point and click and blank templates?

Whoops

One of those rare examples of software that is easy to use, flexible and at the same time fast to build with. If you're looking to make the kind of games this engine and editor excells at I could not recommend it more. For sheer speed of use to get a proect up off the ground nothing in the non-programmer firendly game creator space even comes close.

GG maker is one of the most user friendly and easy to learn game engines I've ever used. And the community and staff is helpful when you don't know what your doing. The documention of gg maker is also detailed to help you make your games. If I had an alternative account on steam I would buy gg maker again it's just that great to use and create games. Trust me I have other game engines on my account but this one stands out the most.

Really a great first step for aspiring game makers. Some functions are a bit clunky, but once you figure things out, it's very rewarding to create a game. BUT FOR GOD'S SAKE PLEASE GIVE US CONTROLLER SUPPORT; I'LL PAY FOR IT!!!

Waste of time and money...

Bugged as hell, slow like a turtle to import good resolution image files and work with them, ugly like a demon, not that easy to use as they say.

Buy Construct 2 or RPG Maker MV, they are fast and work really well.

This is probably the simplest but most effective game maker software there is.

Review in short - good product for any indie dev.

Needs the following features:
1. Faster performance, especially for 2d games.
2. Tutorials - its a simple product but the training could be better.
3. The ui could be clearer in some areas, its still really good in the beggining, but some options feel hidden because there are so many.
4. More integration of scripting - iv used it for a few days now and im yet to come across the "textual scripter" it mostly just always takes me to the visual scripting....so however you can write your own text based scripts should be made more clear....

Full story:
I Bought this on the sales as iv bought a number of game development products. I have a strong background in programming but when it comes to developing games i prefer to spend less time on the coding and more time on actually bringing an idea to life. This product allows me to do that.

I want to establish outright the products iv tried and why i prefer this over them, for my use:

Game maker - decent, will get the job done and has a scripting language. This product is better for RAD as it supports out of the box isometric view controls, 3d model support, lights etc without having to fuss over scripts etc.

AGK - This one is script only and therein lies the problem. Whilst its nice to have a crossplatform API, when developing a game writing all the logic and testing etc takes too long.

Clickteam Fusion - Just dont ever buy clickteam, wasted my money, its segmented and supports many platforms if you use only the core plugins, this product crushes it simply for game development anyway maybe not for app development.

Ok so the main reason is this product is simple for 2d and simple 3d games - there it is!

Thanks for trying,

This game engine is not a standout for modern game building, most like modern graphics and the pixel is alittle in the past,
however I have ideas for a game and cannot get it operational with other engines,

I have purchased because this will allow me to show case how I see my build, and to simply edit sprites on the go, I can simply make all that I need,

There comes a time when you want to get your idea out and working, start with a basic version 1, before you make your grand design, this may just do that.

UPDATE: above was the reason of purchase, but I must say I am having fun with this, everything
is there, a stand out program for first time users, and for my thinking pixels are alittle in the past, my god, was I wrong, so many sites offering free assets, truley a great program.

This is an easy to use game engine. I've perchased bothe engine and MMORPG Kit,wich I might point out does work. Recommend a steam based dedicated server setup so people can share thier games easier. I have managed to get mine up, but most people even when attempting to use a static IP to hst run into the issue of the internet service provider randomly changing the external IP address. The Wurm unlimited Dedicated server type tool would be a good way to solve this issue for people less skilled at handling this issue.

Why is this so popular?!

So well ...
Maybe youre in the same situation as i was: Hmm, looks nice, Oh! no coding!, so many good reviews :o, BUY
but:
Maybe I havent spent enough time with the engine (almost 20 h) but I really dont understand all the good reviews.
This is incredible expensive for the amount of things you can do.

The engine isnt very strong or easy to use. Its just a big waste of money. If u really want to get into making Games go get Unity or Unreal Engine 4. What always hold me back from these engines is the coding, but really guys, trust me : Coding is easy if u just spend some time with it. U should better invest the money into a Unity online course to learn the programming. This will open a you a world to almost unlimited possibilities to make Games. Also, the tutorials to this engine are bad, they do waaay to less for their customers and they want more money to just buy the add ons! My god the engine is expensive enough. Sure u could say Unity also sells Assets, but they are not compareable. The Unity assets are high Quality and you really get something for your money. Sorry, but here you only get a bunch of ugly Sprites that u really dont want to use, trust me. And this engine is so broken, it lags, has unbelievable many bugs as soon as you start to make a blank game and is slow af.

To Sum up:
Slow, Confusing, Laggy, Buggy, expensive, overrated ------ 2/10 Point

So please:
If you are really willing to make your own games, then please dont fall for this bad unfinished overpriced piece of shit dissapointment and go for the real things like unity. There are really cheap courses that will cost you less then this Software and let you make more then this engine can ever imagine to make (look udemy, I have learned a lot there).

Ok, I really dont want to be mean or something, and i really like the idea of a way to easy prototype a game, but its just not working as it is right now. A big sorry to the devs of 001, because this review really wasnt very nice. But i still wish i had spent my money differently.

The program should be in German. But it is not. I can not learn English because my education. And had tried the demo, from just I thought the demo is in german availible. after I bought the programm, I determine that the only language is english.
My problem is that I can´t work with the program with a english interface.
Why is there no other lanuage to take, if it stands in the discription.

Good for making campy little games to send to your homies in mysterious executables. Used this a load as a kid before it came to Steam. Probably not capable of creating anything worthy of selling, so if you're looking to
L A U N C H !
Y O U R !
C A R E E R !
then you should probably look elsewhere. I'd recommend Unity. Pretty shallow learning curve. But that's really where this piece of software differs from others. This piece of software, if you want to make something "okay", has just about ZERO learning curve, so you can dive right in.

Okay have fun byyyye.

rob_crystal_cox
rob_crystal_cox

It looks good, it looks easy, and the free demo is a nice thing to get started but it REALLY needs more instructions. Without a real guide or manual you will soon find yourself lost as the interface is odd and the structure of creating a game is just so different then the other programs out there. As it is right now I can not reccomend it as a purchase which is kinda sad as I kinda liked it.

Since my review they have added a great deal of videos and other helpful information. So I am going to change my review. I am still not sure the program is for everyone but it is a easy start to game design.

Oh worm?
Oh worm?

It's very good! it looks nice, and the games that come from it look fantastic! My only complaint is that it's extremely complex to use. If they could update it somehow and make it so that it's easier to make rpg dialogue, i would love to use this.

HopelessDecoy
HopelessDecoy

There are a TON of nice features in this engine and I feel the technology is there to be better than similar products like Godot, gameGuru and the RPG maker packages but all the awesome is hidden behind a old feeling clunky interface.

PROS:

- 3D and 2D Development
- Exports to most major deployment platforms
- Visual scripting language
- not locked into a single genre of game very flexible
- comes with free assets even if they're extremely dated
-ADDED: The devs are very responsive and will put out updates when asked for

CONS:

- dated interface
- A lot of old feeling menus with a lot of information or too little that can feel overwhelming
- The primary UI is not labeled where it needs to be
- DLC is wildly expensive for some assets and a template

SCORE:

6/10
EDIT: I like the recent updates to the software and appreciate the devs responsivness, maybe after a while they might have that 10/10 software! But for now I am switching my review to recommended, responsive devs who update software based on user feedback are a huge selling point for me!

This is a great software for starting out, i personally have used this for years and would recommend it to friends!

Pros:
Visual scripting is simple yet powerful Great fun to use
You can make lots of fun little games with the assets provided
Good support
Tilemap editor
In-game sprite editor
Fun to play around with

Cons:
Figureing out the item editor can be hard
Adding new tilesets and sprites is a pain

All in all I would give this 8/10 it is a fantastic starter engine and definately can make some profesional quality games with some work!

Absolutely toxic sub-devleopers. the lead guy is OK, but the rest really push away everyone from even wanting to purchase, talk or ask questions. Honestly it would be better to spend money on gameguru or any other game creator that updates on a regular basis with friendly developers and supporting communities. Poor documentation, and very poor interaction with users.

Basically it's a giant "F* you, go learn from someone that uses the engine, and read the wiki" which is very basic, yet they claim it covers everything. New purchasers are discouraged altogether after asking even simple questions with hostile attitudes. Again everything is "Read the wiki", which as many reviewers have stated is poorly documented.

The engine is as dated as it was initially constructed as well, which highly limits what you can do with it in the long run.

If this was a much friendlier staff, I might be neutral towards it. But these guys are worse than EA games & Nintendo when it comes to user interaction. They really need to learn how to interact with people without coming across as mightier-than-thou asshats that seem bothered when anyone wants more documentation or really anything contrary to their beliefs that what they have provided is the only thing they need to. Very good example on why some people should not become developers.

Avoid at all costs.

This is the first software I came across where actual coding isnt needed, the software is really powerful, better than rpg makers in my opinion as you arent as restricted.
Biggest downfall of this software is lack of tutorials, the youtube has few, mostly outdated and poorly made. The forum is dead, no one posts there anymore.
Its a real shame because this is an awesome game engine, especially for 2d rpg games

Killjoy69
Killjoy69

The first 5 hours into this program I would have giving it a NO! I have made small games, but always through code (C++, Angelscript, Lua, etc..) I wanted to try something new that didn't require me to reinvent so many simple things, (simple A.I., pathfinding, inventory, networking)

Alot of other engines, seemed to always be missing something important, that required either a hack or very professional knowledge of programming. This engine, basically has them all, every little feature you can come up with is there, even if its not, custom data structures are available once you get the hang of things.

Now that I have some time with this engine I am finding a groove, it's far from perfect, but everything is really.

My biggest cons, I share with some other reviewers, the ui is not the best, it's not a "ugly" problem, it's the clutter. If you are a digital artist this may come more naturally to you, as there are buttons upon buttons, and when you open something, there is SO MUCH going on. As a coder I initially found it intimidating and just hard to see through the mess, steps that were so simple through code like adding custom graphics are a multi-step pain in the a**.

Another problem I have is when I go to look at some visual script, to see what is going on and how to customize it and reuse it, its like looking at a road map of a country and navigating it makes it difficult on large scripts to see whats interacting with what, where as just code is so much easier to read and learn from.

So in closing, why the YES vote, because those small annoyances I know how to work with most of them and I have a great deal of it figured out, and still so much more to learn, but the engine is worth it, every penny, it's all there, the game you want to make, networking just works, pathfinding just works, a pretty in depth interface/gui editor, lots of placeholders to build a game and replace graphics later, test almost instantly on mobile, layers, and automatic z-sorting for sprites, its just there, and it just works! It's a pain to learn, but anything worth while should be hard, give it an honest chance you can make something awesome to share, I'm well on my way ;)

I use this engine a lot just for the 2d genre like RPG AND PLATFORMER
Since it has a good engine and everything mostly editable and changeable
And it is good for begginers and advanced game developer

Not as flexable as you would think.

Limited.
Broken.
If you are lucky you might make a Very basic game. But the systems are very poorly done. you find this out when you get to the npc and item tilesets. Very Very bad programing layout. make a system to look easy but make it more complex then it has to be.
Very big Learning curve. and this is how they profit. (AVOID)!!!

Let me start this review off by saying this is quite honestly the best game engine I've ever used. I came here from using the RPG Maker series from 2003 up to MV, Game Maker, Game Maker Studio 1 & 2, Stencyl, Construct 2, Mugen, and some other engines like Game Guru, and honestly this is by far my favorite. Transitioning from my past experience to this software was so seamless that I've already spent 27 hours in it my first week of owning it. 001 Game Creator is so versatile and powerful that someone with no game-design history could pick it up and within a few days be creating their very first RPG, while at the same time being powerful enough for someone to make a good 3D First Person Shooter. They have even released "DLC"s that open up doors into even more possibilites. Ever since I got into game design, I've always had an idea that I've never been able to get right with any of the other engines I've used, and I've never had the time to dive into engines like Unity. But now that I have 001 Game Creator, I'm finally getting started on my "dream game", and I can't say I've ever been more pleased with a software. I couldn't recommend this software enough whether you're just getting into designing your own games, or you're experienced and looking for a versatile, powerful engine to create games.

TL;DR: I highly recommend 001 Game Creator. Best game engine I've ever used.

I find this software to be very easy and comfortable to use. I can be a little dense at times when it comes to software and technology in general so the fact the i am abke to work on developing and actual game with this engine is to its credit. Well worth checking out.
Oh and the community is full of kind and helpful people so thats an added bonus.

So, I can't say I've put much time into this software, but I do belive that is has a lot of capabilities for those who wish to create games. There are a few things I want to touch on in this review, but I'm going to try to keep it short.

Pros:
-fairly easy to use. (compared to some other engines)
-not hard to learn.
-quite powerful.
-somewhat versatile.

Cons:
-general lack of built-in resources.
-the general interface is kinda messy.
-importing resources is a painstaking process.
-no steam workshop support.

That last one is probably the biggest for me, mostly because when I need an asset for rpg maker, I can easily just go to the workshop and find it, and while there is an online resource site, it isn't very well built and has very little content on it and the content on it is very low quality, save for a few well built things on the site.

The verdict, when it goes on sale, its worth it, otherwise, eh... I belive it has it's uses, but if you already own rpg maker and have enough skill with programing I wouldn't say it's a neccesity, But overall it's a fairly solid platform with (as far as I can tell) fairly good developers and a nice community.

I bought this for the multiplayer DLC and so that is what I played around on and am basing this review on. My experience has been with using RPG Maker and I knew this would be different and I just needed to learn it, but it was very frustrating, The help guides/tutorials for it are either really vague or pertain to the regular RPG maker, which does not work for the mmorpg addon. I could get nothing to work properly (quests, spells, NPCs, the ability to make various classes for people to choose from, etc).

The second thing I find extremely frustrating about this software is the way they handled custom scripting. You don't really write the scripting yourself, it's a visual diagram that you link together and it makes no sense. Plus, you have to dig through tons of them to find what you want and piece them together without any information on how they want it put together to work, and they didn't even have what I wanted to do in the pile of scripts to choose from. I was not even trying to do anything that complicated just what you would expect to have in a normal multiplayer RPG. I would rather just be able to script it, it would be so much easier than this gimmicky garbage they try to force you to use.

Using 001 engine is a little tricky at first. but after a while you find out that it had good tools for making work easier. if you want to make a rpg game or platformer, your work is easy. but if you want to make something different, you have to learn more about engine.
if you serious about using this engine, first try to learn and make rpg games so that you know software well and after that make your games in other genres.
good : visual scripting
bad : not supporting some languages like persian.

Do not under any circumstances overlook this engine! The options and functionality included blow nearly every other "codeless" engine out of the water. It's as if the engine developer knew the kinds of things you needed to build and included the functionality out of the box.

I've seen people complain about the support, but I have had a completely positive experience. I've submitted 2 bug fixes which were promptly resolved within 1 single development release. And I was provided prompt feedback throughout the process. I also received help from the community discord server regarding a graphical tweak and we got it working the way I needed that night.

The pros and cons of my review is solely based on my experience with this game engine, nothing more:

PROS:
-it is a great engine to make fast game prototypes
-it has a very wide library of events to ease the mechanics of your games
-the default assets and perspectives will aid you to try out different designs(from pixel art to 3D, from platformer to isometric, etc)
-the game templates are really helpful and ease up some tasks that are time consuming (such as calculate the movement of the player or setting the collision areas of the objects)
-altough there are many few tutorials (writen and videos), those there are very interesting and useful
-the most important: if you have some budget to spare, you can pay for personal training or for custom gameplay scripting

CONS:
-visual scripting it is not as friendly as one can expect; the scripts can become very messy (altough you try to organize your scripts, it can be hard to follow the tree of events)
-it is not as easy to figure out how to tweak the values of the events to achieve some particular effects (I tried for many months to avoid the horrible floating platform effect of the 3D perspective, I tried with all the camera and maps events, and nothing)
-the HORRIBLE floating platform effect in 3D and isometric perspective (and I think that it is the same for platformer): I cannot do nothing to constrain the camera to the limits of the maps, and to not show that immense and creepy void that gives all the 3D maps the visual aspect of a piece of a terrain floating in the nothingness... (I tried not only camera and map events but also parallax, also searched for all the tutorials and forums that I can find but nothing)
-the wiki has not any in-depth explanations of the many functionalities of the game engine; the built-in information of the engine is the same as the wiki and it only offers in its majority just descriptions instead of examples or more in depth explanations
-in adition, there are very few tutorials
-I am a hobbyst in game development but have some background on coding with Python as well as some experience with visual scripting with OpenSpace 3D (as a hobbyst too, I may add), but the visual scripting of 001 was often confusing
-the most important: if you DO NOT have some budget to spare, you CAN NOT pay for personal training or for custom gameplay scripting. I understand that, as a company, it has to have strategies to generate profits, but for indie developers could be very hard to access to these services

I do not regret buying the engine, and I must say that it is enjoyable for prototyping some basic games, but when I tried to accomplish some complex actions, I was frustated.

A brilliant engine.

I have over 5 years of indie game experience , I made games and can use Unity, UE4 ,Godot and a few less noteable engines and yet I love this engine. I do not believe it should be used to make certain types of games. In terms of making anything for the most part the big 3 are preferable however there are types of games that 001 is made for and that is large side project.

Want to make a large RPG/Story based game and make it unique(?with more tools than RPG maker) This is it. It gives a incredible framework for RPGs or even a full bases.

This engine impressed me multiple times, it just seems so full of love. More so then Unity/UE4 can EVER be. For example you have a filter tab when making sprites, which can add really cool affects like snow over your sprite. It's just a something small but REALLY cool.

I knew it had 3d, but I always thought it would be underdeveopled and unimpressive based on how little 3d features were advertised, however the 3d templates are nearly as good as the 2d and still a very good baseline for a RPG.

Few issues, obvisouly technical issues with tiles. The filter tab I mentioned previously does not reset itself or does it have a reset button(you have to restart the engine)so you could accidentally tint one of your sprites slightly black and not notice forcing you to redo it.

Far far from competing with Unity/Godot but the best sub for people with no programming expiernce

also pretty sure when you package your game the installer has "001 game creator" on it with no way to remove it. I paid you money, I want my installer to be watermark free.
8/10 plz fix

Very outdated and confusing. The name "game creator" is slightly misleading. They should have called it RPG creator because there are very limited possibilities for other game genres.

A very user-friendly and easy-to-use engine to make a fairly detailed game, with everything you need beyond your own imagination to create your own game. I've used this engine since it first became available on the internet, many years ago, and I've always had fun creating my own games when I felt like forgetting the graphical aspects and wanted to crunch down on story and progression.

I absolutely love this software! It's so easy to learn and I've managed to create games that I didn't expect to work on this engine. Personally, I haven't used the 3D feature yet, but plan on soon. I'm so grateful for 001 Game Creator for making my game designing dreams a little bit easier, and proud to release my very first game on this tool. I would recommend to anyone willing to give game making a try. I hope they continue to update and improve this amazing masterpiece. I've been a user for many years and seen it grow to such a powerful game creator. Thanks team for all you do!

This software does what it needs to. I did try to see if this would work on a Linux based system. Creating maps and placing tiles does work, however the built in editor is broken when using a Linux system and I am unable to change the default editor. No worries though since I have access to another PC with Windows on it. It still would've been nice to have Linux support.

Bought this on 12/27/19. 100% recommend.

*easy to learn, they even have YouTube tutorials.

*able to create your own work or use templates.

*I have very little prior game creating, but they have made the process of learning it alot easier then I thought it would be.

*was skeptical of buying it, out of worry i would lose interest or it would be to difficult to understand. Was not the case at all.

*I did pick it up on sale for 80% off. After getting it, it's worth 100% the price without the sale.

10/10 worth the buy.

001 Game Creator didn't do it for me - I really wanted to make it work but...

There simply aren't enough video tutorials to help move you along with the kind of game you want to make. Even the official YT channel has more vids promoting the various DLCs than showing you how to make something beyond an very basic RPG. You wont find alot of user vids either - which leads me to believe that there isn't a sizeable 001 community. The online documentation could stand to have more screenshots as well. Pushing people towards Discord for support is not what I want to hear - I purchased the software on Steam, not Discord.

I ended up purchasing the RPG and Point and Click Adventure DLCs when they were on sale - simply because this was the best way to see how things can be put together in 001 Game Creator - which shouldn't be the case.

The interface is sadly VERY dated, with everything thrown at you at once (by programmers, for programmers) so it's overwhelming to newbies. That means that accomplishing even basic actions/tasks will take you longer to grasp - you'll be spending weeks if not months learning the software before you get to do something meaningful for your own project.

You can get into Unity and Godot engines for free - so I've chosen Godot for the time being and have already made good progress there on my project. Plus they're a bit more on the professional end offering good support, free assets, and deep documentation.

TD_MudPuppy
TD_MudPuppy

I will start by saying that the 115 hours I have are inaccurate. This software used to be free, and I put a great number of hours into it. With that, I ENJOY the software, but it should be freeware - it has been generally the same software since 2015 when it was free.

I don't recommend it unless you only plan on prototyping small, quick, projects or if you just want new software with some unique features; even then, for a few dollars more you can find other options with similar and/or better features. For all other uses, not really worth the price tag.

To start, and my biggest gripe is the fact that they spend time releasing DLCs and expansions, but it's all based on the same outdated core systems. Some things work fine (although they feel dated), but other things have felt old since 2015. After 5 years, there has been no significant updates to the engine itself - especially since the DLCs dont actually improve the engine... they just create a few templates and assets to show you how you to use what is already there. So, the biggest issue is the system is outdated and doesn't receive any SIGNIFICANT updates that added to the actual quality of the engine. If you dedicate some time learning, in 2-3 months, you could create the same prototypes that this software can in the same amount of time. Anything that needs tends to be complex, will be extremely tiresome work with the outdated visual scripting available in the engine.

With that here are the PROS:
- Easy to use (after a little bit of playing around with)
- All-in-one engine (you can make everything you ever need within the engine)
- No scripting/coding required - but it's available (don't buy it if you plan on doing a lot of manual coding - there is much better software available)
- No the most intuitive GUI, but very helpful and simple once you get it.
- Easy to import sprites, music, and other assets
- Some very useful features that make some tasks very simple (i.e. saving games, scene management, etc)

CONS:
- Lack of engine improvements - expect the same software in 5 years
- Community assets have been removed from when it was free (probably due to their press to earn money from DLCs)
- Cost is fairly high compared to other, better, software
- DLCs are somewhat pricey for minimal actual improvements
- Very limited overall support (i.e. compatible gamepads, ported platforms, etc)
- The visual scripting is only good for simpler tasks, and becomes EXTREMELY tedious when adding more intermediate/complex features.

Overall, I enjoy this software and if you know what you are getting into, you wont regret the money, however... it's not worth the money if you are looking to create real, polished games. In the same time it took me to create a more detailed game, you could learn how to do the same thing in Unity, Godot, Game Maker, and for RPGs games specifically RPG Maker.

while a bit pricey 001 is a very good platform for people who want to get into making their own games. BUT DO BE ADVISED, if you have any practical knowledge and talent with any sort of coding languages or any other professional game engine, you should most definitely use that instead.

001 offers a base for learning how to make games through trial and error, with the stuff that is already there. 001 in my experience can struggle a lot with more complex or abstract commands. such as character states. it very well could just be my own incompetence, but while i had tried to make character states such as distinguishing whether i was on the air or on the ground 001 would frequently break with not apparent cause or some hard to trace minor adjustment you had made. if you want to change around controls and the like 001 will also struggle a lot with that. for example

in one game i had made a custom event that would change the direction you fell and the orientation of the map. this required me the change the controls around, and a significant amount of times, movement just simply wouldnt work. its not even that i was doing it wrong. i used the very events the standard preset used, but it just simply wouldnt work.

its not as powerful or downright functional as things like unity or unreal, but it is more intuitive. it has a graphical ui thats great for new comers, and tutorials on how to do basic things, like make a fetch quest, or change some aspect of how the game looks, all the stuff you need to get started, but for commercial projects it can easily fall short in the wrong hands, or simply frustrate you with the restrictions this kind of system has. you will have to work around some of the functions 001 has, but i dont think i can stress enough hoe beginner friendly 001 is

I don't like it. Getting errors every time it is updating. Uninstalled it and probably not going to miss it.

After looking into it, I found the reason. BitDefender quarantined the Engine001.exe as infected. I know about false positives, but I find it strange that it does so with all updates. This time it was Gen:Variant.Ursu.801040. And after using hours to check my system, it was found clean. I see no point if taking a risk when there are other game creators/engines out there.

If you plan on making a 3D game AVOID THIS! IT is NOT made for 3D contrary to how they advertise, and one of the better looking 3D games they brag that has been made by them now only isn't out yet but also switched engines. IT might be good for 2D, I don't know - but for 3D it is garbage.

I tried using this and the FPS addon to create a first person horror game. Even the asset packages that came with the template wouldn't easily adjust on the map. There are very few tutorials for 3D and the documentation is outdated. 3D models struggle to import properly and in most cases the only way to fix it requires an outdated version of Blender. The Discord is toxic and unhelpful. If you go in wanting to make a 3D game those who actually respond will just make suggestions about 2D games that aren't valid.

Between the false advertising for 3D and being unable to get my refund I feel like I was scammed by this.

I have been using this software for game development for only about a month, mostly at first just reading documentations and doing test sprites, tilesets, etc. This has to be one of the best, if not the best, type of game creation software I have encountered. And believe me, I have used most of them; 3D and 2D. The interface as well as documentation and especially support for the team has been top notch! It takes me a while to learn things but as I keep pushing I get better and this program is my gem, and reason to keep pushing. I was going to give up (as it is a hobby for me), but I am now very involved. Thank you guys for making this. Been searching for years for something that flows with my understandings!

As a true veteran of the software experience, with 1900 hours as of the date of this review (more than 5000 hours in the pre-Steam version), I can with great certainty and with great detail explain the very ins and outs of this program, but the majority of those reading this will likely be interested in only one aspect - making the game of their dreams. It's somewhat complicated, because it depends on how high you fly.
This software currently lacks advanced lighting and shader processing, while suffering mainly from 3D applications. It's capable of delivering some ideas in 1080p, but don't expect an exciting scene to process smoothly - this area of the software is under heavy development. The true gem within this program is 2D-anything, it is even capable of handling exceptional procedural generation, with the exception of limitless worlds. If you spend the time to learn the visual scripting, you will be able to create spectacular 2D games in a matter of a few hours. Mobile support is also questionable, but if you think around the realm of puzzle and small action/adventure games, you can create almost anything, and just as visually amazing as with any other game engine.
The verdict is simple, this game engine is sufficient to create amazing games. It's user-friendly, but like everything else in life, it requires education. Quite frankly, this is the only engine I can recommend for someone looking to create simple but interactive projects, regardless of their experience level. With minimal setup and simple controls, users can define every aspect of their game very quickly - you can't do that with anything else out there, not as quickly and efficiently.

At the time of writing this, I have nearly 500 hours spent in this software.
I find this game engine very charming, looks oldschool, but that's the way I like it.

Documentation might be somewhat limited, there are guides/tutorials, but they may not cover everything.
However, I find this engine very easy to learn and use, so who needs the documentation anyway?

Personally, the network support is what caught my interest when I read about this engine for the first time.
With experience of server and client networking from before, I was not disappointed.
Oooh, the things you can achieve with just a few simple scripts!!

They made customer support a paid service, discord is less than helpful to say the least. They created a stem guide that was literally a recreation of the YouTube tutorial videos which are only slightly informative. They don't cover any kind of real scripting or interfacing. The price is super steep for what you are actually getting. Spend the extra money and just get rpg maker or game maker studio. This is a bad rip-off of those anyways. They don't seem to know simple answers to there own engine when you do finally get through to someone. It's just all around a bad time here nowadays.

Good system but there are just no resources for it. Beyond tutorials designed to get beginners started I can't find help or tutorials on anything and the only way to figure out how to make some of the functions work is blunt force and 10 hours of piecing things together. I would really love it if anyone out there would put out some tutorials. Until this platform gets a little more love and help I just can't recommend it.

I do NOT recommend this piece of software. The developer is not taking his or her paying clients seriously and poorly developing this tool. Although he/she is making a big fuzz out of every little bug-fix that appears sporadically. Support is bad and ("join discord and ask in there") is all I got. Also, if you give a fair but slightly negative comment in the Steam forum this developer will report you every single time and in time will get you banned. To the developer: if you want the opinions of your clients you can expect a negative answer as well as a positive answer. I had both since I bought this software. A negative answer is NOT by definition disrespectful. The game we are developing with this is going to be made with Unity now. Good luck.

update:

The post from the dev below is either a blatant lie or he/she has no idea what his colleagues are doing. It doesnt matter which option it is, it says enough.
I was permanently banned because of my opinion and like i said, there was no cursing, slander or threats just positive and also some negative remarks. I also had multiple conversations over this matter with Steam support and they told me it was up to the devs/moderators of the 0001 Game Creators forum to issue a ban like this and NOT Steam support or Steam moderators, so again that is either a lie or he/she does not know what is going on.
After all the time passed since the ban I understand you guys just want to look good with the comment down below and i can't blame you, you'll need it.

Good luck and have productive and fine day.

Update (again)

Thanks for dragging this out even further. I was never contacted personally by any of you, i was just informed after one negative comment that i was disrespectful against the devs and therefore banned Thats it, thats all.

Like i said, a negative comment is not by defenition a disrespectul comment, and the comment in question was by no means intended and written as such.

Somebody got pissed off and retaliated.

Again, you have no clue what you are talking about. You can post more excuses down below, my (negative) review only gets more attention this way and exposes the true nature of your company and it's childish behaviour toward it's paying customers.

Put all your energy and time into getting your product and customer service better instead of dragging this out even further. It's wasted time and energy.

God bless.

This is a great game engine packed with numerous tools to help you craft your very own game from scratch. It includes plenty of examples which help teach the basics to use the engine. You can import your own resources into any project, from sounds to graphics. There's a small, quiet, yet helpful community of 001 users that may help with any problems on Steam. This game engine looks good and quite powerful, however coming to grips with the UI and windows within windows, within yet more windows is way too confusing. Thought I'd give this a go being a Gamesalad and Gamemaker user previously.
I'll persist with this until I can get my head around it.... but a couple of initial things worth noting is the following.

It seems to be predominantly RPG fixated (I know it can make other games) - But I wanted to make a basic top-down game and simply move a block around the screen....but the basic blank sprite has all these pointless pose features for 'Slashing, wielding, parachuting???'

Why not a simple blank sprite and just add what you need. Do I really need to assign a pointless category like face, body, pants, shoes for a simple game sprite???

Awesome game engine hampered by a massively complex and terrible UI. If an engine needs an overhaul and a CX review it's definitely this one. So many features crammed into an overly complex spaghetti interface hiding a really good game dev tool. Hoping it will start to all make sense soon...

I think the UI alone would have to be the biggest hurdle stopping more widespread adoption of this tool.

I have only played with this for a short time; but I would say it I recommend it. As long as you do everything the way it tells you to do it you will be fine. I was impressed with how flexible it was in terms of types of games you can design. I am particularly partial to Isometric RPG's and it does that very well. It handles lighting very well too. I intentionally try to make these kind of programs freeze/crash etc... just to see what will happen if all goes wrong. The only time I experienced any real issues is when I ( intentionally) tried to import assets the wrong way ( like 3D into a 2D platformer). This creation tool will not "fix" your mistakes but it will work fine if you do not make any. So do a little research. Follow the tutorials. Play by the rules and with a little practice I think you will find significant value here.

This is awesome. Glad that I bought it

I really enjoy 001 game creator...

there's one thing I'd like to ask to the support team.

Could you please add the retro MS Dos game-mode option again.

When I got the demo of 001 , it had the MS DOS mode option...

and it was my favourite one

But for some reason when I bought the full program, it only had the modern options to choose from

I'm still pleased with the product..

You don't have to...

but if you do somehow add that option, I would really appreciate it..

it's so much easier (for me personally) to create sprites with that game-mode,

and easier to the modify terrain textures etc, basically everything is easier for me with that mode...

Thank you for your time and for reading this

This product has brought me a lot of good times.

Even the demo was awesome

Thank you

The engine is very good and the community on Discord very helpful, the only problem I see and I'd love to see in a future update is the possibility to add videos (mp4) during the game, which, as far as I could see is not possible yet.

But the engine itself is very powerful, you can easily create a game and compile to different devices, including online games (web games) this is very good.

I got this as a kid years ago, probably when I was 10-12 is when I first discovered it (10-12 years ago)
And had a blast making and editing things and figuring out how a lot of 001 worked and what I could make.
There is A lot you can make and do especially if you are willing to put your creativity and mind into it.

The engine has a lot of potential to create a lot of things and pretty easily as well. Has a lot of capacity and room to make your own projects and games with. If you got the skills and assets to put even a simple 2d or 3d game together it'll work. Or even a fairly complex 2d or 3d game that works with the engine's capabilities (Which is a lot btw) It'll work too.

I'll probably make a game outta this in the near future to see and show how great this engine is. No game creator or engine is perfect but that is also what allows you to grow on it. And make it better in your own way.

Game creating is different per person, this is just from my own personal experience and I still heavily recommend giving this a shot years later. If it peaks your interest and looks intriguing to you. I heavily recommend it.

It's actually very good to use if you want to make an action RPG.
The option to add teams is amazing, so you could have a battle royale of 1v1v1v1 for example.
Scripting is extremely well done, allowing it to be simplified in the best way I could imagine.
The customisation with the lighting is nothing short of impressive.
I like how they have their own character customization built already into it. This allows you to make unique characters without designing them yourself, perfect for a person who makes games as a hobby.

My biggest issues are that there isn't a very big community, you do get help if you join the discord, but don't expect there to be hundreds of people ready to help. However being as simple as it is, you probably only need to play with it yourself to figure out what you want to do.
Also at least I personally don't think making games other than action RPG is worth it. I tried making a 3D one and it seemed very buggy, perhaps that's my fault?

Anyway, definitely deserves a positive! Thank you very much developer!

Nakashi22
Nakashi22

An engine full of possibilities in relation to what can be created, it has a vast amount of graphical script options to satisfy the user's creativity, users basically don't need to learn any programming language for textual scripts because the graphical scripts are very vast and suggestive, some think that the interface is not very intuitive but for those who are already used to it like me, don't have a problem with it, after all the final look of the game will depend on your graphics if you create any, I discovered this engine years ago when it was free, I'm very satisfied to return to this engine here on steam.

I saw that currently and apparently they sell more in-depth support about using this engine but this is just for those who want to make it easier to learn about the engine, make it faster, but it is possible to learn to use the engine alone depending on the user, buying the product base, the user apparently already has all the capacity of the product, the additional "DLCs" are just to speed up the use of the engine, make it easier and faster to learn how to use it.

I know this may seem needless to say to more experienced developers, but if inconsistencies start to appear after some systems created in this engine in a project, it is very likely that it is the lack of improvement in the systems created by the user, they are often solved by the own user with better adjustments in the created systems, without being the fault of the engine.
