played this a lot on PS4 back when it released, I still suck. Mainly just playing in 2022 to grab achievements, wouldn't recommend playing it now since it's pretty dead and hard to get into any sort of PVP match (play with friends or not at all.)

This game is amazing, and mastering the style you like is satisfying. I recommend playing this with friends to you can play off of each other and gain combat level. There arent many players and its hard to get into 1v1 Matches so play with friends.

I wish they brought more content to this game, I wish they did so many things with this as it's one of the best fighting gamess I've ever played with insane customisation to your moveset and a high skill ceiling. Learning dozens of moves by fighting against others using said moves is so ingenious and I honestly wish they stuck with this game longer than they did. I've played it extensively on console and enjoyed my experience even more on PC, definitely worth playing if you haven't already but I wouldn't expect too much post game content.

10/10 easy though, can be difficult at times, just depends on how fast you work out the whole maze :D

This game absolutely deserved more, it does one thing and it does it to the absolute best of its ability. its not a game you play consistently but when you do play, you have fun.
(btw I had this game on PS4)

I am a 52 year old father, probably one of the oldest people playing. I am a single father to my son, who is now 14. My son recently started playing and in less than a week, he had already played for over 20 hours. This was terrible for me because it was already hard enough for me to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his friends or just watching videos on Youtube. So I decided to make a Steam account and get this game to see if I could maybe play alongside him. I loaded into the game and started playing but I was stuck on what you where supposed to do. I asked my son for help, and together we spent hours playing . I loved it as it was the best time I had spent with my son since my wife had died. Steam has ever since brought me and my son closer again, and now we actually spend time together outside the house as well. reminded me that there's fun to be had in everything, and it has brought both my son and I many happy memories.

Learning curve, its certainly difficult, at least for me it was, but I also spent 6 hours on the tutorial boss in dark souls 3. Customization is pretty great with the use of your deck, which is like a pokemon card game but instead of your card damaging another card your cards determine what kind of face-punching your left and right clicks will do. If you want an openish world fighting game that will give you some genuine challenge? This is where you want to be.

The combat system is one of the best i've ever played. The story is pretty short and throws you into 2 vs 1 boss fights in a 1 vs 1 based game which doesn't make much sense. The servers are pretty dead and those you get into 1 vs 1s with are mostly much better and more experienced than you (I might just be worse than I thought) and spam the same move set that kinda traps you. Overall its a fun game to play so i'd buy it on sale!

I have played this game a long time ago. And i have to say, it is one of the best combat i have ever played.

But sadly the developers don't update this game,so i left after completing the main objectives and spending some weeks having fun in the arenas. I imagine this is what most players did, but don't feel discouraged to play it, this game still have a small but loving community around it.

I just really wish the developers decided to add new content or maybe even a new game.

The game got mad potensial.
This game got a few problems where one of the big ones is. Why am i in a solo campaign, i only want combat against others online players (not bots)
The second problem is that the combat feels half baked. I used to plau For Honor a lot (its unbalaced now) and that games combat felt great. When i started i combo it felt like a chain of attacks where in this game it feels like a new attack every time, even tho its a combo.

Awesome game. Beautiful art and excellent and innovative mechanics. I held off on buying for far too long because of all the reviews calling it a dead game. There is a very dedicated community that still exists. They often stop to help new players learn the ropes and, while their skill ceiling is now very high, they aren't toxic and are welcoming to new players. So far I've just beat the "tutorial" which is really a mini-campaign all on its own to teach you the basics. The combat system here is very innovative. You essentially learn new moves to shuffle into your "deck" which is essentially one long combo that you can start from multiple points in the combo and then chain your moves together however you want. Its a pretty cool idea and the game seems to have some "soulslike" elements as well.

Overall I'm glad I gave this game a chance despite the fact that its been "dead" for a few years now. I regret not getting into it sooner. I look forward to becoming a master of everything this game has to offer.

edit: I've played some more since the initial review and I've come to decide that unless you want to coordinate with other players on the discord server then you will not be finding many people to play with in any of the online player queues. This drastically reduces the accessibility of the game since you will be forced to do PvE (which is fun but limiting) or search for random players in the world who often decline all offers to fight or co-op.

I absolutely love this game but after 14 hours I think I'm ready to move on. I'm still glad I tried the game because the combat is awesome and the game is very well designed for the most part. I'm not sure if I would recommend this game for many people though since I doubt many people would be willing to wait 15-30 minutes in the discord to find someone to fight with (not necessarily even someone your own skill level). The current community is still very dedicated but its very hard to be a new player at this point and I just don't have the patience needed to progress, especially since the devs have been mostly silent and could "pull the plug" at any moment.

Ultimately I only paid $6 for this game and have had a lot of fun with it. I think I'd still recommend trying it out if you're a fighting game enthusiast or have some friends that would do the co-op gamemode with you. Its sad to see this game abandoned by the devs, I sincerely hope they consider making a sequel/spiritual successor at some point because it really does deserve one.

Very, very in-depth fighting. I never had any martial arts experience, but I felt as cool as someone who has while making my deck and fighting in this game. The amount of times I missed by a hair's width and got hit or the other way around is amazing. The hit-box is spot on. My only gripe with this game is that the targeting system is hell on a controller. I know this is a one on one kind of game but you find yourself in 2 or more on one more than enough to notice how bad it is. Otherwise, pretty good game. I like, yes.

Unfortunately there seem to be few people on the servers which makes online matchmaking very poor, i'm often faced with seasoned players as a noob and this can be annoying. Also the loading times are often very slow even though my pc is powerful enough to handle the game. That being said, for 5 quid this game is very fun, the combat system and deck building is unique and makes for complex gameplay. Would recommend on sale.

Well folks, to start, I have not played 48 hours of this game. I've played a solid 8, and I just couldn't get behind it. I love having it up on my desktop though, really beautiful main menu. Let's get to the nitty-gritty part.

I wanted to like it, but I didn't. Overall, it was a lackluster experience for me. I had it on my wishlist for quite a while and watched some videos of it, but after playing a bit and looking back at the videos, I noticed that a lot of the videos were clips cut together of the most interesting stuff. Not my best work researching games, though I was younger when I got this.

It's got a really great atmosphere, and the art style is A+, however, the core gameplay involves a lot of running around and fighting pretty easy enemies. For me, the gameplay was intuitive and easy to grasp, but I definitely feel like I could have enjoyed it more with a bit more of a challenge. I also noticed that there was a large lack of players, which was what drew me to the game. I believe the game was intended to have you fight players at about the same rate you fought NPCs, though unfortunately my experience differed from what I believe the developers intended. I spent most of my time after the first 4 hours exploring and appreciating the world.

Mechanically, the game has a great system for building combos and creating your fighting style, though the stances did feel a bit much at times. In general, I'd say that when you're fighting, it feels good. When you're not fighting, it feels a bit like those games where your one objective is to walk around and look at the landscape.

I don't believe the game is bad, I just think it's not for me, and I can't recommend a game that felt it lacked an objective, whether intended or not.

Just buy Sifu. Playing single player and co-op with your custom character is fun, but it's annoying to learn new moves. When the pvp wasn't dead it usually lagged and you'd get cheesed all the time. The progression is very grindy and tedious with no end game to work for.

Zippy
Zippy

Phenomenal game. I initially played this back on the PS4 and absolutely fell in love with the game. I just recently bought this game again on PC and decided to try out a different fighting style and fell in love all over again. I cannot recommend this game enough if you have even a passing interest in martial arts and fighting games.

Absovler is the perfect game if you're into tense fast paced melee combat. In the beginning you can just wander through the map and get to know the game and enjoy the setting. Now after you're done with the base game the real fun starts. (in my opinion) The real depth of the combat only rises to the surface once you actually understand the basics.
It is essentially 100% skill based (with the exception of some matchups favored to one side)
And in the end the better player will win which is something I really like.
Also the community is ready to help and teach which is nice for beginners.

So, so frustrating. But if you get past it, calm yourself, and set about methodically learning enemies' moves - alongside honing your own combos and instincts - this game is *so* rewarding.

I've supported this game since day one. It's one of my all time favorite fighting type games. The system is unique and I love the deck building. The number of moves and combinations you can make are incredible. The art style and obscure story (based on what's available) are a breath of fresh air from other titles of the time.

Gear is an aspect but it's less important and more for fashion. Your deck setup and reaction time will decide the winner above all else.

One of the issues I have with the game is how long it takes to learn moves. It's time consuming to find people who have the move you want and to practice using your skill against it. If you can, it's best to have a friend so if one of you learns a move you can help the other. I do have response problems when it comes to using my fighting art, I've only ever played on controller so it's unknown if this issue stems from the game itself or my setup/software.

It's unfortunate the marketing killed this game but thankfully there's still a very small loving fanbase. Occasionally there are peaks of about 100 players. If the community could grow, this game would be a wonderful PvP experience. If you're interested, I highly recommend purchasing. It goes on sale often but paying full price to support the developers is best. They unfortunately had to move onto other projects, such as Sifu, but have stated they'd come back to this game if they can. Support them so one day they can hopefully make this game the vision they always dreamed of.

While I thoroughly enjoyed Absolver, I cannot in good faith recommend it to anybody.

Beyond the atrocious load times for what little it is loading, and how frustrating the matchmaking is, the requirement to play online for the majority of gear is downright horrendous.

Ignoring this and other issues, the main dealbreaker is how easy it is to lose hours upon hours of progress to faulty save file formatting.
Creating a new character WILL overwrite your first character.

Do not buy this game unless you intend to stick with the same save file for hundreds of hours, as making anything new will destroy your progress.

Being an online focused game and the last update of any kind coming out march 1st 2019, this game is not at all worth any money, there is some enjoyment to be had but it will be a shell of what the game was

FUFUJUJU

Id only recommend this game if it was heavily on sale. The core gameplay is AWESOME. Ive wanted this sort of gameplay since for honor became a terrible experience. That being said, the devs have fully given up on giving any sort of support to this game, which is a major shame. If there were a little bit more content to this, maybe a story, other gamemodes, something. Then they mightve had a winner.

That being said, as I mentioned before the gameplay is super fun and honestly relaxing. Ive spent the majority of my time just wandering around finding low level mooks to beat up with my basic combat style. The bosses are just hard enough to be rewarding to beat as well. And the atmosphere is impeccable (sound and visual design).

Really good game, but the campaign can be finished in under 3 hours. There's a PvE game-mode called downfall, which is pretty fun, battling your way through procedurally generated dungeons with a limited number of lives. And then there's the standard PvP 1v1 and 3v3. Unfortunately the online is pretty dead, however if you have some mates who are willing to play it w/ you, there is an abundance of fun to be had.

While this is one of my favorite games, a warning to new players: with the absolver+ mod out, and its focus on the competitive aspects of the game i cannot encourage this game to you, it has gone from simply a gated community where the entrance was time and skill and pain. to said gated community resting on a ship filled with water. the only people to be left will be us skeletons at the bottom

Kahlemviir

Absolver as a game is bittersweet. Conceptually its fantastic. The combat is tough but so satisfying when you get it right. The world building and art style are some of the best in any game I've seen to date. That's what makes it so sad that this game died so quickly.
I played this game at launch on console and had an absolute blast. Despite the very short nature of the game you get so immersed in the world, its astonishing. The different combat styles were fascinating to learn and each one offered a different feeling on subsequent playthroughs. This all culminated in the deck building and pvp.
The deck building (being able to customize your combos and how they chained together) added so much depth and made pvp a very fun and interesting experience. No two players fought the same way and though I am not a huge pvp guy I was totally hooked.
However later on when I got this game on PC the community had shrunk by a large amount and a major issue with these types of games reared its head. Similar to For Honor, the remaining player base has had so much time to hone their craft that a new player or rusty has almost no chance to compete. If you can find a player that is willing to show you the ropes its not much of an issue, but that's a rare occurrence.
The fond memories of this game make me want to recommend it so badly, but last time I played the game was practically dead. Definitely not worth picking up at full price anymore but on sale (currently 80% off at 6 bucks) it may be worth trying out.

Game with the best freedom and most pvp oriented game. You can jump anyone at any time and they can jump you too. Most times opponent will wait for you to finish the bot, but they will fight you regardless of your hp. Meaning you have no choice but to fight. If you win, you can be cool and revive them but they will get full hp and most people will fight you again. Because of the hp difference you have big disadvantage if you were the victor.

The skill system is cool but I think the most impressive setting is that the main goal is to fight as many people as possible and the side goal is to follow the story quest. I think this is great because most game have their focus on the story. On those games after you complete the story, you get bored. This is not an issue in Absolver. Its an easy game to pick up too and I recommend you get this gem.

Honestly I love the game, the graphics are beautiful and the limited story you get while exploring the world makes it feel oddly real, like you're a real person meeting people and they don't give you their entire life story. The combat is fun and feels well balanced, the different classes all have their strengths and you customization available in your attack patterns is both simple enough to pick up quickly but in depth enough to put hours into making your deck just right. You can speed run the game in less than 2 hours if you wanted, there is a steep learning curve though, or you can take it slowly and enjoy the beauty of the art style and sounds they used. Character customization is VERY limited but as it isn't super important for the game it's not a problem. The DLC is worth picking up and sadly an entire class and its attacks are locked behind it as far as I'm aware, I imagine you can unlock them without the DLC but you can't play the Downfall mode without it where you would normally unlock it the proper way. The developers are no longer adding new content to the game so keep that in mind, I wouldn't recommend paying full price but if it ever goes on sale for $15 or less in my opinion its a must try for anyone willing to commit some effort to learning the combat system.

LightningStripes

This game is very deep and it is hard to understand everything it offers without spending a lot of time in it. The game can be clunky at times and the PVE content wasnt really well designed or thought out when it comes to multiple opponents. 1 v 1 combat is where this game shines and the theory crafting/skill ceiling is crazy.

Haven't played Absolver in at least six months. Re download game. Log on. Mess around for about 30 to 40 minutes killing AI. Create brand new combat deck. Encounter Random Player. Attempt to wave Hello. Gets slide kicked into mini boss arena outside the tower of Adal. Run past boss and minion. Re encounter same player 30 seconds later by the shrine. Wait for his next move. He slide kicks again without bowing. Beat his @$$ within 1 minute with brand new combat deck. Bow, revive player, rest at shrine, alt F4. Still love this game. 9/10. -1 for all the times i got mad playing combat trials.

A great PvP and a short yet difficult PvE experience for beginners. Even though the game is REALLY old i still find myself enjoying this game in 2022. It does indeed have lots of potential for Sloclap to make a sequel (instead of a successor like Sifu) for this game as it could help widen the eyes of gamers to find PvP and PvE mixed together. Sloclap most DEFINITELY isn't reading this but thank you for making a game that still is at its peak, not in popularity, but in quality. And you reading this, just get Absolver. If you haven't already played it, you should, just trust me on that one. Anyways, that's all from my extravagant prologue of a review, See ya!

long story short this game just isnt worth buying especially at full price.
i really like the game and i dont regret buying it just because the combat is just that good also the character customization is nice

long story here ↓ ↓ ↓ ↓

.barely any content

.the player base is dead

.deck building UI is terrible and its way to complicated its ok when you get the hang off it but its still just rough around the edges

.getting moves is by far the worst thing about this game its a chore, you have stand there waiting for the enemy to do the attack you want so you can block it or evade/parry/absorb

.the AI enemy's gets boring to fight because you surpass them in skill so fast

.fighting multiple enemy's at a time is god awful it makes me want to jump out a window.
its not fun its annoying

.theres no sort off fast travel so traveling around the map is a chore and on top off that the map is just confusing

ive played this game sense release on my ps4 and i have so much love for this game down to the animations and the scenery everything is awesome! The fighting is dug in so deep with style and combos down to the frame advantage of every single move. The customization is great too. You really can express yourself in every way.
