I have a problem with crying, a few years ago something happened and i lost the ability to cry, no idea why that's so but now the only thing that makes me produce tears is lack of sleep. But this game is one of the only things that has come close to making me ball my eyes out. Please buy Adios you won't regret it.

I would recommend it for the stellar voice acting alone. It's short but oh so bittersweet. I definitely wished it to be longer - but that is kind of the whole point. Although, personally, I needed more time to settle into the character and the world, to be more grounded and for the full emotional potential (and there is a lot here) to unfold.

But it really did touch me, and it'll definitely stick with me for a while before I'll be able to let it go. It knows what it wants to be and executes on that excellently.

An hour long story that's not necessarily bad nor will blow your mind either, although at some point it does hit. Not too hard but it makes you think.

I did not think I would like Adios.

The premise is great - your character knows that an old friend might be on the way to kill him - and I was excited about the prospect of a small, focused game about convincing the friend not to do it, or setting up a Home Alone scenario to try to turn the tables and survive.

It is not really a spoiler to say that it becomes abundantly clear in the first few minutes of the game that this is not going to be the case. I therefore expected to be bored by the dreaded "walking simulator". Instead I found a simple, straightforward narrative that had me completely absorbed for its short runtime, made me cry at least once and will stay with me for some time.

Adios is a game that does not give you much in the way of choices, because you are stepping into the shoes of a character who has made all of his choices already; the game begins with him making his final choice. It wouldn't be appropriate for it to be a game of choices and consequences; you are not playing as a player-insert cipher, but as a fleshed-out human being who has taken a very specific and deliberate path. The game shows this quite cleverly by presenting the player with dialogue options that can't actually be chosen; things the character is thinking and maybe wishes he could say, but can't or won't.

The main mind behind the game, Doc, is known for his writing on game design, so it is perhaps surprising that Adios doesn't have a lot of "game" to it. What it does have is a surprising range of verbs through which to interact with the game world; in the course of an hour or two max, you will milk goats, feed horses, pat long-gone dogs, make a complete arse out of trying to make a stew (if you're like me and forget to chop your onions) and yes, even fire guns, proving that it is a real video game. Doc's fondness for a well-designed shotgun is sadly let down by the shotgun here being quite unsatisfying to fire, but given the budget and the lack of extensive war sequences, this can probably be forgiven that it isn't quite Mindbender's Ambition.

Despite playing as a man in his middle-to-late years, the player can sprint and jump around like Gordon Freeman, I believe largely because Doc firmly considers it more important for a game to be pleasant to play on a basic control level than to stick strictly to narrative cohesion. As someone who spent large portions of Half-Life 2's endless talking scenes bouncing nearby cacti off a scientist's head and requires constant stimulation, I can certainly appreciate this. While all of the interaction is fairly perfunctory, it does its job of keeping the player occupied in the everyday, meditative tasks that the player carries out over the game's short runtime, which I personally appreciated and found kept me engaged in a few that few other games in the genre manage, comparable to What Remains of Edith Finch. At no point did I look for a cactus to bounce off any heads. I often approach games looking for them to justify why a video game was the medium chosen to tell their particular story, and Adios is one of the minority of "walking simulators" to reach that. Even where the player is railroaded, it serves a purpose; again, this is a character who has made his choices and we are only on board for the consequences.

There isn't much else to say about Adios; do not play it if you're looking for a thrilling immersive sim about trying to foil a hitman who knows your character's routine and habits, do play it if you want to experience a great narrative that (other than the aforementioned disappointing shotgun) also happens to be enjoyable to play and will stick with you for a while after its brief playtime.

I really wanted to like this game because everyone was saying it was super good in the reviews. What you pay for is a really short story with minimal context and no time to actually enjoy the characters. The game also has the illusion of choice by giving you different dialogue options that if you press them your character just goes "hmm" and you HAVE to pick the "right" option. The only time I felt emotion during this game was the 4 lines of dialogue the player character shares to his dead dog like halfway through. If you are easily attached to people maybe this will work for you but if not I'd say dont waste your time

A film length game about a man coming to terms with his own sins and making the decision to try to make at least one good call. Alternatively this is a story about the American chestnut and how in 1904 a bunch of Chinese chestnut trees introduced a blight that nearly wiped out the species.

Adios was... an experience. You can finish it in a couple of hours but is such a touching experiene that you'd be hard pressed to find something as emotional as this. Not in a blatant or easy way, but in a more subtle way: there is not asingle thing that overshadwos the rest, and when you combine them all, the writing, the voice acting, and even the game mechanics themselves, you get a taste of something truly unqiue, something that you cannot probably experience in any other form of media.

Do yourself a favor, set aside a couple of hours on a lazy afternoon, and play through in a sitting without distractions. You will not regret it.

More interactive film than game. Amazing voice acting. A bit depressing, but that's what the game intended. Recommended for a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

Adios is an experience that is short and simple, but touching and deeply human. The game relies almost exclusively on its dialogue, the voice actors delivering an incredible performance, each conversation captivating and drawing you in. It doesn't have much in the way of gameplay and it doesn't need it. Set aside about an hour or so and just let yourself take it in (especially if it is on sale).

All thanks to a close friends recommendation, I gave this game a shot. A walking sim made by a pretty small team with a short impactful story to tell. If that description sounds like it's for you, then get this game now!! It's worth it. The voice acting is superb too. 8/10

I recommend it, as long as you don't read the store page first... if that's possible.

Everything looks and sounds nice. The voice acting is great. Some of the mechanics are a little clunky, but it's nothing major.

My biggest issue with this game is that SO many reviews talk about how awesome the story is, but one of the most major plot points is given away in the store description.

I somehow managed to miss reading the whole thing, so the end honestly came as a bit of a surprise to me, which was awesome. I wouldn't have had the same experience if I had already had it revealed to me.

I don't know. I was/am conflicted.

I review walking sims for the "walking sim fan club" group so after playing a good 100 of them I feel I can confortably review this one. Truth is, it's linear, it's very short, and it's well put together so a refund wouldn't be fair. But at full price, I cannot recommend this when other games run at the same price on discount and deliver 10+ hours experiences.

The 1.7h you see on my timer were spent looking for alternative endings, alternatives to ... anything really. There are none. It's more of an interactive movie where you are not in control.

GFX are decent but 60fps at SUW 32:9 is a bit low. The rocks looked odd. There is support for SUW but to read the journal you'll have to switch back and forth so kiss goodbye to adaptive sync unless you like to fiddle with your G9 constantly.

Overall, a disapointing experience which I hope will lead to better games.

Short and sweet. The game is frequently overwritten (the breakfast scene, for one, is intensely exposition heavy in a way that took me out of it), but its moments of brilliance leave me excited for its developers’ outing. Fishing after two devastating phone calls, watching the reflections of autumn tinged trees rippling in the water. The greyed out dialogue options continuing out of the frame, telling us so much more than the dialogue itself. When the script steps back and lets itself breathe the game is great. I just wonder if its author didn’t trust it to convey all of its messages without some heavy-handedness. Will definitely check out doc’s next!

Adios - 9/10

Playthrough Length - 1 hour

Plot and Dialogue: 10/10, 10/10
Setting and Art Design: 8/10
Soundtrack: 5/10
Graphics: 5/10
Gameplay and Sound Design: 5/10, 7/10

Plot and Dialogue:
You buy this game for the story. You don't buy it for the gameplay or the graphics. Let me say that this game has incredibly written dialogue, with amazing voice acting. It'll make your heart yearn with some of the dialogue that is presented in the game. The story is the simple discussion of if it is too late to do the right thing. We spend an hour doing the mundane things this pig farmer would traditionally do, being accompanied with a member of the mafia. The sense of dread and ending that is presented throughout the game is very much so fantastic. You get very engrossed into the character. I very much enjoy the fact that there are dialogue options that are grayed out that you cannot select, as they represent the thoughts of your character and how he wants to say what is on his mind but he cannot.

Setting and Art Design:
The setting of the simple farm in Kansas is done excellently, providing a good amount of depth to your character. In addition, the art design is one that I liked to see and enjoyed, but I would see why others would not like it so much.

Soundtrack:
There are some sound cues but there isn't really a soundtrack.

Graphics:
The graphics for this game are not great, they are simply serviceable, and I do believe they do not subtract from the plot and dialogue so it does its job there.

Gameplay and Sound Design:
The gameplay is pretty mundane, mostly a walking simulator with some interactive parts here and there, but it is ultimately serviceable to the main plot. The sound design is also not out of this world, but it is good and helps with the main plot.

Final Notes:
If you want a short game that deals with a moral crisis that people will face at some point in their life, I highly recommend this game.

The less you know about this game going into it, the better. All you need to know is that it's approximately 90 minutes long and filled with more emotion than many games five times its length. I doubt I'll ever have an experience in gaming that's quite like this one.

Personally, I cannot yet enjoy a game that deals so clearly, so closely, with such an intimate scene as the last time friends can spend a morning together. I am not strong enough.

That being said, I believe this is one of the few times I've experienced a video game as something other than a means to escape my own situation. It's a short experience that tells me a great deal about the developers. I look forward to their next game.

10/10, would recommend this game to anyone unconditionally.

Interesting concept overall...
Main gripe is that I think it's way overpriced for what it is.
It's only about an hour or two of gameplay. For $17 it's just simply too much.

My other complaint is some of the story writing is cliche. Some of it was good. Some of it I was rolling my eyes.

If there's one way I'd describe this game, it's that it's lean. It fits everything it needs to into 1-2 hours of playtime, with an extremely tight script, excellent voice acting, and a story that knows precisely what beats it needs to hit. The pacing here is perfect, and while not particularly complex, the interactive parts provide a perfect backdrop as the story plays out.

Even if you're not into purely-narrative driven games, please give this one a go! I'm a very mechanics-first player, and Adios still had me gripped.

I don't know if I' the kinda guy for some of it, but out of all the l'il narrative games I've played this is the best.
While I have small gripes with the visuals (I think the game is too bright (for me) lacking gamma settings, especially in the kitchen - and the goats move a bit weird), it's written god damn well, and feels like a damn good complete package.
While I'm a bit biased since the writer is the one who led me to get the game, I really love the way characters are written - instead of loredumping, it's just a glimpse into a day in a man's life.
That fucking phone call.

IFIYGD
IFIYGD

Short interactive narrative game.
Not an action game.
You have a shotgun, you don;t get to blast away with it whenever you want.
So, if you were hoping you could- this game isn't for you.

It's a story- one day in a pig farmer's life,
A pig farmer who feeds chopped up bodies to his pigs, as part of his work with a hitman and the people the hitman works for.
Some emotionally charged narrative bits, regarding the farmer, his family, and the choices he made over the years.
Some exploration, but also lots of invisible walls, where you can see a big map that you aren't allowed to explore fully (which was a bit frustrating to me- I like to explore every inch of every map in every game...).

Stylized graphics- don't expect photo-realism. The game is set in the 1990s, and it has that look to it.
Some good music in the son's old room, but it'll be subjective. If you're hoping for 90s pop- you're looking in the wrong place. It's not that.
Scene select after you've completed the game, so you can go back and pick up missed achievements (and there are quite a few missable achievements).

If you enjoy narrative driven interactive experiences, you may enjoy it.
If you are looking for something where you can Blam Blam Stabby Stabby Blam Blam- you probably won't.

It's different than anything i have played before, and different than I expected.
That said- I enjoyed it.
YMMV.

I've been putting off reviewing this game because I haven't been able to adequately find the words to describe how *good* it is, but going any longer without adding my voice to the chorus of people screaming about this masterpiece would be unfair.

It's just... really effing good. It made me feel things that I didn't know video games could make me feel. If I won the lottery, my first order of business would be to give Mischief twenty million dollars and let them make whatever game they want, because it would surely be the best game ever made.

caseofspades
caseofspades

Short and bittersweet, Adios is a tightly focused story. There's obvious backstory, and some of it is addressed, but the rest belongs to the characters, which helps make them feel like real people with real lives and history. The voice acting is probably the strongest aspect of this story, some of the best I've experienced.

I'm not really going to focus on the gameplay aspects here. Could they be more polished? Sure? Are they functional? 99% of the time (I hit a weird timing condition issue while shoveling manure. It recovered fine.). Is this game doing anything groundbreaking with movement, aiming, or UX? No, not really. The "gameplay" is simple, but I think the feelings this game with leave you with are anything but.

I would enjoy reading this as a short story. I would enjoy watching this as a short movie. However, I think it really shines as a game because you have to walk alongside the pig farmer and AS the pig farmer, to the inevitable outcome. Simply watching or reading as an external, removed "other" would diminish the experience. This game manages to make activities like feeding a horse, preparing dinner, and fishing for "the big one" peaceful, tragic, dreadful, and somehow, triumphant. Highly recommend, even at full price, even with an approximate 2 hour experience.

Omegam
Omegam

Adios is a somewhat spiritual journey that reminded me mostly of Nicholas Cage's Pig, in being a fairly serious and dower look at a man's life and what he wants to do in it. The involvement of pigs in both is a coincidence though, as they mean different things. Pig's, well, pig, is somewhat of a metaphor for innocence and simplicity in a world filled with rage and go-getters. Adios's use of pigs is closer to an acceptance of the circle of life and how at the end, no matter how much work has gone into maintaining your favorite car or taking care of yourself in memory of a long lost love, you are food for the pigs. Adios made me feel solace in the meaningless meaningfullness of life, and that's pretty neat.

There's an argument to be made that Adios is not a good [i]video game[/], as it is barely interactive, with the interactivity only taking form in how long you wait between your chores and what you do with them. I think the argument falls flat as the mundanity of it really brings you into the characters shoes. You aren't just feeling your emotions, your feeling his, from the tedium of cleaning to the existential dread of being alone.

It takes roughly 1 to 2 hours to play, and is worth the price of admission.

Really did not feel worth my time or money (bought with 10% discount). I didn't feel for the characters, the narrative wasn't engaging, the gameplay was simple by design, but with all of those things not being compelling the experience failed to be too. It's trying to paint a picture and set a certain bleak mood and tone with the power of gameplay, but it feels more like an awkward play than a story that brings you in. I don't mind the graphics, or even the legnth, it just doesn't do much with it. Just because I'm controlling the character that's experiencing these things doesn't mean I automatically care about them.

I would love to see more indie games with this style of production. The graphics, while not cutting edge, do a great job of delivering the clear visual aesthetic that the team had in mind. The voice acting has a real edge to it that a lot of AAA games seem to miss, and it lends a special chemistry between the NPCs especially.

It would be a disservice to dismiss this game as a walking simulator; I felt engaged throughout the playthrough and there's plenty to do in this game even if there isn't a strictly defined lose-condition.

There are so many dimensions of excellence in this game that it is hard to tell where to start. The experience uses every element of gameplay to tell the story and include you in it, both through the actions available to you and those that aren't, and through the emotions and state of mind it provokes. Playing through it I felt trapped, I felt like there was no way out, I felt remorse for things in my own life that could be compared to things in the main character's life, and I felt frustrated about what I could do and what I couldn't do. This game accomplishes in it's short form what few other games have ever managed.

In short, this is a masterpiece. And I truly mean that. There is no element of this game that is not perfectly tuned and designed to achieve a precise effect. And that includes the short length and the relatively few choices you get along the way. This is an incredible example of how to use the video game medium for dramatic and emotional effect. I expected a lot from this game and still my expectations were exceeded. The more I reflect on it the more I enjoy it.

This is a remarkably delicate game. I've often been sceptical of games with a strong narrative focus but this is a wonderful counter-example which proves that the right script- and talented voice actors and artists- can produce something truly impressive.

There's also cleverly designed interactivity throughout the experience that keeps it engaging- it's not 'sitting through a cutscene'. There was a particular kitchen mishap I made (entirely caused by my clumsiness) that I won't spoil here, which wasn't a scripted moment, but it really made me smile and made the story uniquely 'mine'.

For what was presumably a modest budget, to hit this level of subtlety is very, very impressive, something that AAA almost never achieves.

As I said in my (updated) Paratopic review, I really, really want to see what this designer is capable of on a larger budget game, so I hope you consider picking this one up.

I had been hearing about this game for over a year. That it was an emotional experience and it was best to go in blind, and they were right. The dialogue, the characters, scenario and the emotions involved all feels real. You feel empathy and emotion for the people in the story, till you are ready to burst into tears. contrary to populair believe, sadly, i didn't like this game. I wish I did, but I don't. I thought the writing was mediocre as well as the directing for the voice actors. the voice actors themselves were fine the delivery just wasn't great and that also counts for the dialogue they have to work with. There is no sensitivity switcher in the game. you can't have the big white reticle in the middle of the screen go away without also the buttons you need to press showing up. and I thought the ending was very abrupt, although this was obviously intentional and I am sure it just did not work for me personally. also the field of view switches to default literally in the final scene so that also was kind of immersion breaking. there were also moments i couldn't walk backwards and sometimes the controls were very awkward. If I liked the way the narrative was told though this game I probably wouldn't have had an issue, as for most steam reviews for this game I presume.

Hello. I'm Matthew, a grown man, and this game made me cry over a chestnut tree.

You may be wondering how we got here; Allow me to explain: The narrative in this game is not adequately described by any known adjectives, however I reluctantly will settle on a concept: It is like slowly becoming the character, while being fully aware of this process, with no means/desire to halt the progress of said transformation.

Dialogue options are presented. I found myself at first fighting to insert myself, my will, onto said choices. I failed in the end. Even at the threshold of the final choices, I reflexively thought to the farmer and what he should say. Would say. MUST say. The absolute crushing weight of it all was immense. And I was tired. I was sorry. I was resolved. The story was telling itself in a way that I had no right to alter, and no will to try.

Knowing how it would end, yet going through the simple actions that defined his day-to-day was a feeling I struggle to describe. Anxiously freeing? Somberly satisfying? Numbly engaging? It was catharsis or even poetic justice on a level I've never experienced in my own life, sadly.

I threw horseshoes. Fed a horse apples. Microwaved a burrito. And yes, learned the provenance and tragic plight of a majestic organism in the form of the North American Chestnut tree. That broke me. I largely held the game at arms length until that moment, but my father cut trees all his life, all while wanting to be an arborist. That hit me so much harder than I was expecting that I physically felt it. A gut punch. This game is a veritable minefield of such connections, and one will find you. When it does, it'll hit you like a freight train, and you wouldn't leave those tracks any more then that train would.

It took me 80 minutes to finish, soaking in the details, but also not lingering on any moment for longer than it needed. I would pay the price of this game thousands of times over for that experience again, if I could see it from my initial oblivious state. I'd have paid much more had I known the absolute treasure I was getting.

Final note: If you don't enjoy games as stories, then this experience probably isn't for you. It is functional and entertaining as a game in-so-much as it allows you to be the story. It is not for highscores, leaderboards, bragging rights, co-op, fighting, action and/or challenge; With the exception of challenging your reality, morality, and ability to forgive. To forgive yourself; To be the truest and most necessary version of you despite failing, giving up, and taking the easy way out until it was almost too late.

Thanks Doc.

Probably one of the most overrated games of all time. I can totally understand that this is about story and not game play. Hell that's the entire reason I bought it. The problem is, the story just really isn't that good. Like at all. All the reviews talking about feeling pain and what-not don't make any sense. I've played non-story focused games with a more engaging story than this.

This game is a story, the story is bad. I don't recommend it.

A wonderful short story exploring choice, death, and life. Very refreshing to play something so contained. Really enjoyed my few hours with this story through it's completion. Adios means goodbye.

Probably best short story game I played. Voice acting really sold it.

It's a short, playable movie. Priced just cheaper than a movie ticket, it's well worth your time and money. A story that doesn't take long to complete, but will stick with you for a long, long time.

Enjoy a day in the farm with your friend in this narrative experience!

Get some root beer, feed a horse, and deal with your biggest regrets in life! Everything is nice and very sad,... I mean, nostalgic! It's all fun and games until your friend discovers the way you cook. Then you'll be screwed,

I really loved it, there isn't much of a game it's just two people talking basically and its really short, but the dialogue is good, the voice acting is excellent and the story told captivated me.

Fantastic experience. Can't say much more without ruining the experience. A quarter the price of Call of Duty with infinitely more depth and impact. Give it a go.

If you're expecting a 'game' in the traditional sense, this isn't it. What this is is an engaging interactive story that has a surprising amount of charm, and hooks you in with strong writing and performances. I went in thinking 'oh great... ', and came out thinking 'wow, that was great!'.

What an amazing game, been a long time since i played any narrative games and Adios is definitely some of the best i've ever played. It's short but it just hit the right emotions. The dialogues and the dynamics between the hitman and the farmer is just awesome, and the voice acting is also just on point.

Bought this game to support Doc, and ended up getting an awesome experience. Here's hoping for Adios 2 and Waifu Death Squad!

Tells the story it needs to and doesn't stick around for much more, I appreciate that. Acting is solid and the world is beautiful

Despite the game being all about the story, the story just isn't that good. Not sure why this needed to be a full fledged game instead of a free itchio project. I came into it hoping for something very engaging, judging by the steam reviews, but the whole thing can be summed up into about 5 minutes of dialogue.

I get that the dev said some nonsense about "all the little things" being the meaningful choices, but this amounts to there being absolutely no mystery or sense of discovery. This is not what replayability is.

There are a lot of games far better than this, and if you really want a completely static experience without any real gameplay, listen to an audiobook.

Some stories work best in video games apart from books or films. Adios is such a example.
Interesting conversations with great voice acting, well worth your time and money.

This game is pretty good!

There were a lot of times where I noticed that the subtitles didn't match what the voice actors were saying, so it can be a bit disorienting if you play with those enabled. The jump you have doesn't let you clear the white picket fence around the house, either.
Those were the only things I could think of when thinking of things I didn't quite like about Adios (and they are pretty minor, if I do say so myself). Everything else about it is great! Great voice acting, great writing, moving around felt great, etc.

As for how it made me feel, I have this habit of taking a deep breath and letting out a sigh after seeing the credits of something I really enjoyed. After beating Adios and letting out a sigh, I kinda sat back in my chair and breathed for a while, feeling sad and satisfied at the same time. I figure that the 'satisfying' aspect of Adios makes it really stand out among it's genre, since it's nice and short too, the fact that the game is as fulfilling as it is is a major plus.

So, if you're in the mood for a short yet satisfyingly somber time, be sure to check out this game! It'll set you right.

Beautiful thing. Worth every cent.

If the Criterion Collection were to start a curated games section and publish them to disk, I'd see this being one of the first. Its a "short for a game, perfect length for its ambitions" kind of thing, the run time is about the length of the best films out there and has the audio and visual quality of the best art movies out there. Great drama, tear jerking interactions and enough mystery to grip you from start to after its end.

very well written, and the voice acting is superb.
made my cry within the first 10 minutes. I never thought i'd cry learning about the American Chestnut but here we are.
There's a fishing minigame, you can make a burrito, and you can also pat the horse, and (arguably), pat the dog :)

What appears at first like a fairly simple story grows with each scene, offering the story of a person who is too tired to really continue with the life he's lived. The choices made throughout the game grow and often offer surprising options. This is well worth your time if you're looking for a nice, albeit heartstring pulling story.

Short and sweet, gripping story, great voice acting. Some stories are best told using video games as a medium and this fits perfectly.

A well done, engaging narrative experience. It is only a little over an hour long, but it is well paced, well written, and tells a compelling tale. Enjoyable, yet simple art direction that catches the eyes as well. Recommended for anyone who enjoys a good story and walking sims.

A gut-wrenching, incredible little game. Very sad, very very good. It felt as if I were playing a classic great American novella. 11/10. Thank you, Mischief, for making this, it was the best 75ish minutes of gaming I've experienced in months.
