The latest visual novel by Tomo Kataoka, the author of Narcissu 1st & 2nd, has arrived! An empty world with endless rain and only one person. Here there is no hunger, sickness or even death. Just what story does this world's one occupant have?

Ame no Marginal is yet another game from stage-nana the creators of the masterpiece narcissu. This one is on the short side of things and a bit different than the previous stories. It takes another view on life and death in how it would be if you could live forever but at the same time never die. Its not as emotionally heavy as the previous stories but it's still worth the read since it explores the problems with eternal life. A goal that many in todays society seek out to reach.

I liked the author’s previous work, so I picked this up immediately on release without even looking at what it was about. What I liked most about Ame no Marginal was the mood, created by the music and visuals. Unfortunately the characters were a bit flat, and it didn’t end up packing the punch I was hoping.

That’s really my only problem here, that it’s lacking in depth. The cast is tiny, and yet there’s not much work put into making them fully realized. It makes it feel like a fairy tale. It gets the mood right, but smooths out details. It becomes a problem because one of the main characters is talked about as if he’s a person, but you never get much of a sense for him. He’s generic male protagonist, and he doesn’t belong here. This story called for more than that.

That said, Ame no Marginal is still nice. Parts of the story were excellent. It’s mostly in the second half it started to strain credibility. And when the ending hit I wasn’t feeling it at all. But still, the music was great and the early parts of the story were gripping, so overall I’d say this is a success. I imagine many will be more forgiving than I am, and I’m happy for you. Finally, it’s probably overpriced for what took me ~90 minutes to finish. But sales will take care of that if it’s a problem for you.

Since i played Symphonic Rain ,a long time ago,i can't help myself and need to buy VN with the word "rain" in it...

This one is melancholic and cute.
A bit short for the price but you get another nice VN at the end of your playthrough.
Narcissu is already free to grab but if you are like me and missed it,it's great :)

So,i give a "yes"!

What will you do if you are trapped in a empty world where time have stopped. When the rain never stop falling, when sickness, hunger and death never existed, a world where only one person can live in?
Ame no Marginal is a short kinetic novel made by Tomo Kataoka, the creator of Narcissu 1st and 2nd. It portays the lives of 2 particular characters.
A troubled young man who tried to take his life by attempting suicide on the 7th floor (The rooftop) of the building that he is working in. Only to find himself going back to work the next day. Curiousity soon led him to the 8th floor of the building. The floor which never existed until that day. Upon entering the 8th floor, he finds himself in a place that he had never been to before, a world with an everlasting rain. He was soon greeted by a young girl who have been living alone, in the cold and empty world where the rain never stop.
Ame no Marginal's storyline is well written and very engaging, the depressing yet touching storyline, along with the appropiate use of soundtracks is able to portray the right mood. The voice acting is also excellent and the characters are also well drawn, Overall, Ame no Marginal is a very good Visual Novel. If you have read Narissu and enjoyed it, then, I'll definitely recommend you to try out Ame no Marginal.
10/10 will spend a millennium walking through the river in the rain.

Just another great kinetic novel from Kataoka Tomo.
you'll need a pack of tissue if you really loves this type of game, and planning to play.

will you able to atone such as burden??

Quite a good little story that I higly recomend it. Unlike the creators previous work this one is not as a depressing story however that does not meen in any way of form that it's bad, in fact I think I prefer this one.

The only downs I have for it is that I feel like some of hte characters are not fleshed out enought, granted I know there is a light novel but I guess it probobly will never get translated so we won't know what happens there.

Strange story. Not much interaction, just click, read text, click to advance story and so forth. Wasnt terrible but it had a (sort of) happy ending. The soundtracks are done in a OGG format, which is fine, I guess. I just prefer actual music for an OST and I sincerely hope the devs do make the soundtrack available to play through Steam. Yes, I am well aware it is a "Visual Novel" ( knew that when I bought it) but I still would have liked a little more interaction. It stills feel unfinished to me, like there is more to tell but thats just me.

A fairly short (~4-6 hours) and nice VN that revolves around the story of a young girl named Rin. The story actually has 2 paths that you must read through in parallel. The first path is from Rin's perspective and covers her life up to the present, but the second path takes place in the present and follows a generic protagonist's view through to the end.

The story is simple, but interesting. A girl is trapped alone in a world of endless rain. How did she get there? Why can't she leave? Who is she? These questions are brought up at the very start and by the end they will all have been answered very nicely tying up the whole game into a nice little package.

There is only a small cast of characters that show up throughout the story, and of the characters that do show up only Rin's character has any real development or depth to it. The present time protagonist, while has some depth explored at the start, only exists to further explore Rin without any sort of real development or depth of his own. The lack of depth in others isn't a bad thing necessarily, but the story leaves a lot of questions regarding characters unanswered, and because of the lack of any detail it is difficult to really care about any character other than Rin.

The one aspect this VN nails though is atmosphere: an isolated world, a population of 1, an endless rainfall, and eternal life. This VN exudes melancholy from the great art, the well done voice acting, to the soundtrack that is spot on with every scene. If there is one thing this VN got perfectly it is the atmosphere.

The translation has a few minor grammatical errors here and there, but overall it was definitely a quality job.

Final score: 7.75/10

Beautiful visual novel I love Tomo Kataoka's stories and Ame no Marginal is another heart felt novel that gets you thinking of differnt perceptives how we see our emotions. Its a short novel but its worth it I do wish there was more story about the guy who comes to the raining world.

I throughly enjoyed the entirety of this visual novel. The tone of it is gloomy, but the main setting has an interesting brightness to it. The story will keep your attention, the music is wonderful and does well to set the tone of each scene. It's not the longest story, I finished it in about 5 hours, but I thought it was well worth the read and purchase.

A great visual novel with a deep and meaningful story! Ame no Marginal is yet another great visual novel from the creator of Narcissu. The art is in a beautiful anime style with some realistic detailing much like Narcissu. The music adds atmosphere and emotion to the entire visual novel through it beautiful sound and emotional range.I recommend Ame no Marginal to both guys and girls of all ages.

This story touches on some rather incomprehensible subjects like eternity and immortality. Reading the story is a melancholic and philosphical experience that is shown from two different character persectives, and as close as one should get to understanding the heroine and her situation without going insane.

Not for everybody. It will ideally get you thinking a lot about the theme concepts, which can make reading tedious.
The prologue and base story zigzag switch style storytelling can be immersion breaking but it makes it a little easier and nicer to read as the tones change with it. This is fixed if you read it a second time and can focus on the prologue or base story.

If you liked Narcissu, you will understand the writing better plus it comes with a deleted scene type bonus from Narcissu.

Didn't realize that the creator had more content out there other than Narcissu 1 & 2! Does anyone know if it's worth looking into the backstory of the Mistress in the game Ame no Marginal or was that just a sort of fun thing the author did?

I enjoyed the concept of the game, the story was simple and nice. It gave me lots of chances to pause to think on the story but there are still a lot of questoins I have left.

Though sometimes it's nice to have a story not completely wrapped up and put away.

Good short visual novel. Deals with some heavy topics but doesn't keep it from being good.

My only issue with it would be is that it is short. It would not surprise me for people to get through it in an hour or two. Still over all was worth the price to me and gave me some things to think about.

Ame no Marginal is an odd visual novel. It feels like a complete game, however when you finish it, it feels like it wasn't the whole thing. This is one of those games I wish I could press a "neutral" button.

This is a deeply emotional story with big flaws, but with a wonderful development that will remain on your thoughts for a long time.

Tune in for an in-depth review. No spoilers, I promise.

Story

If you are interested in the Visual Novel world, I'm sure you've heard of stage-nana. After all, it's the circle that created the amazing and unforgettable Narcissu series.

I read Narcissu a long time ago, long before Sekai Project officially brought stage-nana works to the world. Narcissu is a story that touches you deeply, and years after reading it, I still remember the experience vividly.

I wish I could say the same for Ame no Marginal. It starts reasonably generic, but a few moments later starts to find its own way of storytelling. The game then branches into two paths, both leading to the same conclusion - you have no choice but to read both of them. The next chapter won't unlock until you finish the two newly unlocked chapters, and this is a major issue.

As I said before, you have two branches: one before the eyes of the protagonist, at the present time; other at the eyes of the heroine, mostly on the past.
Chapters are unlocked two at a time, and the major issue here is that most of the second branch actually works as a full storyline, almost like a single chapter. That wouldn't be exactly a problem if reading any of the branches actually unlocked the next chapter in the same branch; unfortunately, you need to read both chapters, and they differ a lot in terms of mood and content.

While shifting through timelines was most likely something the author planned, the biggest issue here is that there is almost no message, no answer and no conclusion to the story. There is a massive buildup on both branches, mix it together with your expectations and you are left with a whole cup of disappointment. The story just ends in a way that nullifies that makes the whole ordeal seems like a simple issue.

Don't get me wrong, but Ame no Marginal is a sweet story. Really sad at most times, but with a silver lining hidden in the gray sky. Unfortunately Narcissu is a lot better, and free.

Art

Let's get this straight: Ame no Marginal is not impressive graphically. It's well drawn, the characters are cute and the mood is easily understood. However, ten years before, Key's planetarian delivered a similar story in a similar fashion, that is still impressive to this day.

Ame no Marginal only features a couple of CGs, a couple of sprites and a couple of backgrounds. Nothing more.
It's not beautiful to look at or something you would definitely remember the game for. It's all nice and cute, but certainly not memorable.

Music and sound

The piano music is soothing and nice to listen. There were plenty of times I left the game open to look at something else, and the sound of rain with the piano just felt right. We're not talking here about Umineko levels of sound, but instead we're talking about something much smaller, but still nice. This is what "less is more" is all about.

The voice acting is also top notch. Rin's voice is cute but also powerful when it needs to be. The voice pierces right through your heart, and the message will be certainly heard. Without spoiling the story, the author (and the protagonist as well) is well aware of how greatly Rin's voice change gears when it's needed. This level of awareness is not found so often in other visual novels, and here it is used to its fully extent.

Conclusion

Ame no Marginal is not a bad visual novel. It is also not the best, but is priced a lot higher than it is worth.
Having no expectations is the best way of enjoying this little story. And mostly important, this is not Narcissu.

Consider buying it on sale. Set up the perfect mood, get a nice cup of your favorite drink and enjoy the two to three hours of story.
The ending feels terrible compared to the development, but even though the aftertaste is bittersweet, there are some memorable things in this novel.

Ame no Marginal is another linear visual novel that tells an interesting story about two people who are not interested in returning to the "normal" world. While not as tearful as Narcissu 1st & 2nd, Ame no Marginal does a great job of still pulling you along emotionally, and getting you invested in the characters' lives. Unlike Narcissu, Ame no Marginal contains an element of fantasy in its storytelling. A lot of tracks from Narcissu are re-used in Ame, and a bonus chapter from Narcissu, as well as the entire 1st story, is included as bonus content after completing the linear novel. However, it feels vastly shorter than Narcissu does.
Overall, if you liked Narcissu, then you'll like Ame no Marginal. If you want to see more from this author, definitely consider purchasing their work so we can see more from them here on Steam!

Ame no Marginal is an very good Novel from the creator of the Narcissu Series: Tomo Kataoka. It has the same art an CG style and a wounderful story. But lets start with an little pro/con table:

PRO:
-Good Story
-Nice art
-Fitting Soundtrack
-Japanese Voiceacting

Cons:
- with 4-6 hours playtime a little short

Well lets get startet!
It's hard to find something negative about this Novel. Its style is similar to the Narcissu Series (1st&2nd). The story is not quite depressing like the Narcissu series but its story is well-grounded. The reader is searching for answers for what is happen and why its happen but will he find it?
The story is about an unnamed protagonist who enters with an elevator in an world wich seems to be eternal and empty. Its raining every time. In this world he meets Rin. She is living here for a long time. But what is this place about? Why does Rin living here? WHY did he get here? Questions about questions. Rins past is also told. The Story is parted in Chapters. For every Chapter of the main story there is a Chapter of Rins past story so you get more answers by time. This is a very good way to tell the story. Its never boring nor its getting very sad like Narcissu.
I've played the Novel i think for a bit more then four hours to get through the story. It's a little bit short but I'm a fast reader and played through the Novel without break.
I can just recommend this very great Novel. It is worth it!

I like this game, but if you have no experience with this writer or visual novel in general, I won't recommend it. Go get Narcissu instead (It is free on steam by the same writer), and come back if you end up liking his style of writing.

To put it simple, it was a short and sad story about a girl becoming the lord of a never-end raining world. There wasn't too much happening with the plot. Rather, it was the mood that kept me reading. The male character was a depressed salary man, but that didn't affect the story. (The writer's other work, Sumire developed by nekoneko soft, incorporates the setting of a depressed salary man way better.) After finishing the game, you will unlock the bonus content, which is the full game of Narcissu 1 including an extra little chapter not in the free steam version.

I like the game music. It fits the sad and depressing story. The artwork is hm...I doubt if anyone can fap on it, but you never know. I bought the game when it was super cheap during summer sale, and it worths the money.

This fine work from the same creative mind behind Narcissu tells us something about the rain in an ethereal, reflective way.

In a world where only rainy weather prevails, one mysterious girl, who is the only resident of that world, meets a man who had almost given up on life. Together, they talk about little nothings, until those talks evolve into reflections about living life with regrets and without them. This is the crux of the story hidden behind the gazillions of raindrops that fell over the course of the entire story.

The translation could use a little more polishing, and an English dub would be great. Here's my little cast list, including the originally-silent protagonist:

Protagonist = Max Mittelman
Rin = Christine Marie Cabanos
Lady = Lauren Landa

While at the end, I didn't cry as much as I did when reading Narcissu 1st and 2nd, I felt a sense of accomplishment and victory, now that Rin has found her way that she lost a long time ago.

Hurray
Hurray

This non-interactive story is about a suicide-prone white-collar (an unnamed decoy protagonist) who gets sent into a mostly empty parallel world, where he meets this (also unnamed) girl who's been living alone there for over a millennium. Apparently because people can't die in it. The rest i can't spoil, but the story isn't as lighthearted as the art style makes it seem to be. It's an amazing tear-jerker if you don't mind fantastical elements. But it's still pretty good if you do.
You might first want to try "Narcissu 1st & 2nd", which's free on steam, to get an idea on how stage-nana works. And at least Narcissus tries to stay grounded to reality.

Pros:
+ Short, yet amazing story.
+ Soundtrack fits perfectly with the mood.
+ No choices, so just sit back and enjoy a good tearjerker.
+ Female protagonist didn't suicide this time!
+ Voices sound great. might be annoying for some players, though.
+ Contains an extra chapter for "Narcissu 1st", another work by the same developer.
+ "Rin" is legal.

Neutral:
* Story gets juggled between two routes (present/question and past/answer) before converging, making it hard to follow the events in one of them. But it's still a good way to expose the world to the reader.
* Handwave galore: much is left unexplained. better being minimalistic than ruining its world with silly tropes.

Cons:
- Silly title. it's hard to say it with a straight face.
- The art could use a bit more work.
- There are only a handful of images, which often get reused.
- Characters are rather simple, especially the white-collar guy. you could replace him with a block of wood and the story would still go on regardless.
- Requires fair amount of suspension of disbelief.
- Story can get a bit too DBZ-y. Heck, most of the setting is inside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, FFS.

Everything a visual novel should be; the writing is beautiful, the translation is on point, the art is lovely and the music is fitting.
The story is strange, sad and a little eerie, with some speculative fiction elements. It's pretty short, around 2 - 4 hours depending on reading speed, but for this type of story the length is perfect.
I really liked the parallel chapter structure. The game is a kinetic visual novel, so no choices, but the structure allows the reader to pick which side of the story they hear first. Depending on which you choose, you'll get a slightly different experience.

Not sure about the price, I've seen much longer visual novels for half the price. This is a high-quality visual novel though. If you're a fan of this creator's work, it's worth it.

While I wouldn't say it was as good as its predecessor novel (Narcissu), Ame no Marginal was a nice, short story with believable characters, an interesting plot, and a highly satisfying conclusion. Most importantly, however, the novel managed to tell two different, distinct (yet obviously not wholly unrelated) stories concurrently without ever running into an issue of pacing. Each arc felt to be a suitable length for the point it was trying to make, and the game was very good about ensuring you had read all background necessary before moving on so as to ensure that none of the references would be missed.

That said, despite how nice of a VN it was, it was only a 4-5 hr read at a leisurely pace. I couldn't recommend it at the full $13 Steam price. Get it when it's 50-70% off and it'll be worth your while.

Rain Marginal is a visual novel featuring Tomo Kataoka as its senario writer, brought forth by Stage Hachi, which was formerly Stage Nana before 4 years of inactivity.

Anyone who expects it to be another Narcissu might be disappointed. However, there's 120 Yen Stories in it, with Narcissu and Mizu no Marginal as well. So fortunately or unfortunately, Tomo Kataoka's still here.

For being a visual novel it may not be that visually appealing like other VN on the market
but the story is consistent and really enjoyable to read
it does sometimes get a bit boring but after 3.5 hours the journey was worth it

btw the ending is amazing

DeamonHunter
DeamonHunter

A bittersweet visual novel, focusing on two characters that have met in an new "world" that is almost completely white stone and is always raining. The story in of itself is nicely paced, mainly featuring a conversation between the mc and the girl. While a good majority of it is a conversation, it can pull on your heart strings. It also allows you to choose one of two stories pieces to have before the other before more unlock.

The artwork is nicely done, with effort to make each shot being unique. Each piece has this sort of cleanliness to it that is unlike many other novels.

The music is top notch, featuring a number of piano pieces that aid the emotion of each scene. Each piece is one that I would gladly have playing as background music for when I'm studying or doing other tasks. The voice acting is ok. It falls into the issue of only having female voice cast, so the main character and the male side characters have no voice acting. There is no particular moments where the voice acting shone.

A lot of the same things can be said for the Narcissu #1 story. Except this one is even more bittersweet. So all in all, if you like having a visual novel that is well written and lasts for about 2-3 hours (including Narcissu) then this is a VN for you.

Ame no Marginal is a good game. It’s a solid experience with an interesting story, moving you in a way that only a stage-mana story can with it’s somber yet calm atmosphere, but it’s a bit too short and underdeveloped to call it amazing. It's an incomplete work. I was just cut short from the ending. premise was great, world-building was great, but as expected from an incomplete work there are many plot threads hanging.

---spoilers follow from here---

like Rin's dual behavior
or Lady's origins
or the requirements to enter the rain world
or why are her (Rin's) tears exiting the main world is a huge "bother"

edit: heard it was dropped or stalled indefinitely. yeah, don't pick it up you'll just be left hanging.

Ame no Marginal is simple and complicated at the same time, if that’s even possible. We are presented with a plot and characters that are both a mystery, and they will remain like that for most (more like entirely) of time. Meaning that the story and characters aren’t so developed like in Narcissu, so if you don’t like to have unanswered questions in stories, I recommend you to skip this title.

I felt like I was on the place of the MC; things happened very fast, and there was just little explanations for them. Everything is surrounded by mystery, rain, sadness. I thought I was going to get bored/annoyed by that, but I didn’t. And just like how it started, it ended: brusquely. It was a single situation that didn’t branched out of it. It’s a good kinetic VN, not a masterpiece, but it’s interesting. Now, I must say that Ame no Marginal is very overpriced for such a short story. I recommend getting it only on sale or better, in a bundle.

8/10. The narrative was good and kinda made up for the lack of explanation. At least in my opinion, it was an interesting experience.

If you're using the Japanese text for reading practice like me, it's decent enough. I started playing it just before doing N3 on the JLPT. I thought it was challenging enough without ever being too difficult. It's not too kanji dense, though I seem to recall a couple of times where it used the kanji version of vocab that is almost always written in kana. It's largely readable without having to refer to a dictionary too often.

Have not completed it yet so cannot comment on the story at this time. The BGM is quite good.

Although made from the same makers as the ever depressing 'Narcissu', this VN feels a lot more mild in theme as well as presentation. They both share similar themes, but when compared to Narcissu, Ame no Marginal feels...lacking. Still a very good read, but nevertheless lacking if you expected something on the same emotional level as Narcissu. Still I can surely recommend this VN, but just not at full price(~50% off), even though Ame no Marginal has an excellent art style, a somewhat unique story and a wonderful soundtrack.

>set story up to be sad

this is a really really interesting concept and I love the idea but this story ruins itself in the last 10-15 minutes of reading.

Around 7/10 recommended. But if you like Narcissu series or things from Tomo Kataoka, then you will definitely like this visual novel. They are actually pretty similar in topics: a drama about life and death, just with different plots and themes. Also, this one is a lot more abstract and ... artsy, a lot more than maybe "Sumire" and "A little Iris".

The voice acting is actually kind of good. It did make me think about the meaning of a lot of things...

Of course, it is from Tomo Kataoka, so the story will be a bit unrealistic and dessociated but still successfully told what it is meant to tell.

Oh and this one does have a happy ending...

Ame no Marginal -Rain Marginal- is a short (about three hours) kinetic novel with a sad but also sweet story. The artwork and voice acting is nice, and the music does a good job adding to the atmosphere and supporting the characters's emotions.

The story of a world where it always rains is told from the viewpoint of two protagonists, has some depressing, uplifting and otherwise emotional moments and is tied up nicely with the final conclusion.

Overall I enjoyed it, but for the short playing time, no choices or alternate routes and therefore no replayability, I'd suggest picking it up when it goes on sale - which it often does.

Totally a cute Catgrill

Makes me thank my own mortality.

Being a fan of Narcissu 1st & 2nd, I was overjoyed at seeing another title by stage-nana and this was just as charming as their other work, though a bit slower paced with a rushed story (hypocritical, but I will explain). If you liked that series and possibly planetarian, you will definitely enjoy this.

A kinetic novel about the story of a girl in a World of Endless Rain and a boy who ends up there, it's a tale that will have you wondering what you'd do if you had an eternity to live compared to Narcissu's if you knew the end was near. It jumps between two characters that goes everywhere, but also nowhere so you're left with a couple questions than when you started.

This is definitely something you should try if you want to get into visual novels because each chapter is relatively short. One of my concerns, as with Narcissu, is the design of how to get to each chapter which involves reading in order to get to them which is can become a major headache especially when you're trying to remember where you left off.

Great Story very emotional and touching, I will say that its hard to keep up if your not concentrating, The story is too fast paced and not explained well at times and the text is white for both people and you have no title on top to tell you whom is speaking. its pretty much like an actual real book. so this defeats the point of being a VN.

Another wonderful VN, it's short (it took me just 7 hours to read all) but it goes straight to the point and in the second part hits directly in the soul of the reader. I feared a bit towards the end but luckily the epilogue fixes things. I love sad stories, but an ending where Rin had been left all alone for the rest of eternity... I don't know if I would have appreciated it. It would have match the rest of the VN, but I am much happier to have her gone out and enjoy life a little, which was always denied to her. The OST is good, it makes you fully identify with the characters in that world of infinite rain; the graphics clearly have a peculiar style, you can see a certain care on the drawings but I would have preferred larger squares to be able to appreciate them better. I don't know if it's the most suitable VN for a beginner, but for those who appreciate them I would say it's a must read !

A Visual Novel with an interesting story about a world of constant rain with only a population of one and the story of the person who lives in that world, give it a try.

I had my doubts about this game before I saw it was made by stage-nana and since I love Narcissu (first game is also included in this but it's free to play anyway) I had to get it and wasn't disappointed. So if you're familiar with those I'd just say go for it.
If not I'll just say that what I absolutely loved about both Ame no Marginal and Narcissu is the atmosphere of loneliness, sadness and despair that is somehow presented so matter-of-factly it's almost soothing. Almost. So if you're prepared to be sad this is the game for you.

I loved the melancholic atmosphere it creates. Leaves lots of questions unanswered, but it's not something necessarily bad. I would have been fine with a more depressing ending too tbh.

Ame no Marginal -Rain Marginal- melancholic masterpiece just like all of stage-nana other work. I highly recommend all of their works and they are a huge inspiration to work on my projects.
