Game is way too buggy, just straight up unpleasant to play. I hope devs work on it but till then I wouldn't recommend.

7 hours in and really enjoying the music, environment, controls, everything is done well.
As someone who lived through the 80's, this is spot on.

Honestly it's just OK, Thief sim was just better in every way. its WAY more linear than TS to a major detriment. there is a "sandbox mode" but in it you literally have to follow most of the begining story beats until you get enough money to branch out. all in all just wait and hope thief sim 2 is better than this mess. they recently added a whole new neighborhood....that you have to do story stuff to get to. there's significantly less stuff to steal than ion TS and you're forced to buy literally every car once they become purchasable one of which is used for literally one mission then ignored.

TL;DR: IT's short, linear af, and missing a ton of what Thief Sim has. Just wait and hope TS2 is better.

We know this is not a masterpiece, but we know this game is so fun for doing something illegal.
Just something to be enhanced further, it is performance while moving different area, or average rendering when move my mouse to move charactor's sight !

I can recommend this game based on my 6 hours gameplay and comparison to Thief Simulator. I really liked Thief Simulator and was happy this game came out. It is still in development but already has a lot to do for you.

There is an open world setting with an interesting story so far. There are some bugs but the devs seem eager to fix them and give advise on the discussion forums.

The content is comparable to that of Thief Simulator. You move through houses to find stuff to steal. You start small and move up while getting xp for your jobs. You start to steal cars and I guess that the neighborhoods will get richer when you move on, giving you more lucrative loot.

Differences between Thief Simulator and this one are the world, it is open world. Or at least the gameworld is bigger then just a neighborhood. There are main characters that you can interact with instead of a phonecall. To buy stuff you need to go to vendors instead of buying them online or through a interface screen.
Entry into buildings are more puzzles that make the whole experience fun. You can relock the doors to avoid getting cought while inside and much more.

The minigames are still fun. I like that the jewelry minigame has been changed and so far I didn't have to dismantle cars as in car simulator games.

The only thing I still don't get is that you are not able to close a window after opening it, or dropping loot out of a window on the second floor and it is still fine.

I think that if you like stealth games or if you liked Thief Simulator, this game is for you. Good theme with lots of possibilities for stealing stuff. A fun game.

Very fun game overall. The game itself is not as polished as i hoped it would be, i also encountered a few bugs, some even gamebreaking, but overall the experience itself was very fun.

Simple graphics, nothing special, a little bit different gameplay from Theif Simulator, but its the same concept. The game is very much like a prequel to Theif Simulator. It has many of the same mechanics as Theif Simulator, but it has a different approach in some ways. The story had a nice change of pace, feeling like your character engaged a little more than in the first installation. The developers definitely scored on the 80s vibe overall and did many things right. All though there is much room for improvement and refinement in the game mechanics.

As a previous Thief Simulator player i am satisfied and hope to see more content in the future. If you enjoyed Theif Simulator, i can almost garuantee you will enjoy this game too.

The original was better. This is either rushed garbage, or just plain garbage. This is the type of product you get when you constantly let game developers off the hook for releasing a product to early.

This is the kind of game that is really going to scratch some people's itch to sneak around and steal everything that isn't nailed down. You know who you are Skyrim players with a house totally full of clutter!

If you are a fan of the first game, this game is similar but more polished. That said, it still has levels of jank I would rate as "charming". There's definitely areas where the interface could be improved.

The suburbs (residential, commercial and industrial) are now joined on one map and you can drive between them. There's a plot and side missions that will guide you through a lot of the map, but the game really shines for me once you get a few tools and just start scoping out houses, getting peoples routines and then picking the perfect hour of the day to jimmy a window and steal all their shit.

The minigames for lockpicking, jimmying windows, safecracking and so on are not hard, they tend to reward calm focus and punish the kind of nerves you can build up in a tense stealth game. Driving is okay, but don't expect GTA style shenanigans. It's mostly about getting to and from locations. A pro move in some (later) locations is to sneak in, open the driveway gate and park your van right where you can load it up quickly with TVs and microwaves.

If you are going to try to carefully steal everything and complete the plot, you've got about 40+ hours. The main plot could be rushed through much faster. The map itself is not huge by open world standards, but each address is kind of it's own puzzle. You have to know the occupant or guard schedules and know when to it's time to bail. But don't worry, you can come back and finish cleaning places out another night.

Truly an amazing game. I played a lot of Thief Simulator and this game has a lot more features.
1. the game is a lot more dynamic. instead of robbing a house, leaving the neighborhood (loading screen), selling everything, reentering the neighborhood (loading screen), its all right there. you can rob a place walk to the nearby pawn shop, sell, rob another place, sell, so its a lot more fast paced.
2. the town is more alive with npcs and people driving around instead of just in the houses and walking around. you have a main quest and even side quests from talking to certain npcs. this makes this game more immersive.
3. more game mechanics like changing outfits (regular outfit for talking to people, sneaking suit for improved stealth at night, and other disguises to walk straight in to houses in some levels). your car is your base of operation. you can store items in it instead of going to pawn them, change outfits, change tools.
4. more things to buy including tools, cars, and even properties.
-
So this game has a lot of improvements over Thief Simulator but I will say Thief Simulator does have some pluses. The lack of friendly NPCs makes the game a lot more eerie and tense. Some might prefer that as it makes the game feel more challenging and terrifying - almost like a horror movie. This game plays more like GTA. I am very exciting for Thief Simulator 2.

I went into this game completely blind, as I do most games. I looked at some of the photos from the steam store and honestly thought "This is going to be one of those really low quality meme games, that people play for like an hour"; I was wrong. This game honestly has exceeded my expectations.

The game allows you to go up to almost any house, warehouse or shop and you can steal from it; with a few exceptions. If you follow the story there are a few "scripted" ways you have to infiltrate a house, such as pretending to be an electrician or having to lock pick a specific door to get in. I say scripted with quotes because in reality you can get in different ways, its just obviously not what the game intended.

The place where this game really shines is when you free roam around and choose what house to rob yourself. You have some amazing freedom when it comes to this, you can stalk all the residents to choose the perfect time to strike or just go in blind and take your chances. The residents have realistic schedules and they can even completely differ from one another even though they share a house; you know like a real family. Later in the game you unlock "bounties" for specific items; which can switch up how you target a house. You could have robbed a house's bedroom multiple times before and know exactly how to get in and out without a trace; however with these bounties you could get a bounty for a item only located in the kitchen meaning you now have to go and scout out a new plan to stay unnoticed. I haven't even talked about the different ways to enter buildings, most of them have multiple ways to infiltrate these can include: picking a lock, breaking a door with a hammer, using a disguise, using a crowbar, cutting off power to a powered door, sneaking in behind a resident that's come home from work, climbing over fences, climbing up to a balcony with an open door. On some occasions the house you want to rob may be an apartment, with bars on the windows and locked behind a door you cannot pick; in this situation you can literally climb up to another apartment that you can break into and make your way down to the house you are targeting.

Explaining the game play sounds boring, "oh, you go rob a house to sell stuff to be better at robbing houses" however when you're actually in the game it is so addicting. I get to the point where I say "okay, I'll rob 1 more house then stop playing for today" and then end up robbing 5 or 6. There's just something thrilling about cleaning out a house of its valuables, and leaving before the residents even know what hit them.

The mini-games you play when picking a lock using a crowbar or any of the other ways you use to infiltrate a target are all really well made. They're realistic and based on how you would do it irl; well as real as a game can be without being tedious. Let's take lock picking for example, you literally go pin by pin and set them to the right height. It is very simplistic but it makes me feel like I am actually picking a lock, and it feels great when you do it correctly. The lock picking mini-game isn't alone in being really solid, using the crowbar you find the right place on the window to pop it open; when you break a door with a hammer you have to adjust your placement after each hit which just feels so right. Now some of these games can be tricky to pick up and understand what's happening; I don't think the tutorials the game makes you do actually teach you anything; for me personally the lock picking broke my brain and I literally had to learn whilst I was robbing houses. Then after a while I realised you had to line up the tops of the pins with the top of the lock and now I am unlocking doors in seconds. It feels like I am becoming a better thief alongside my character.

The game also allows you to steal vehicles, but it kinda feels like it was just thrown in at the end of development. There are specific vehicles you can sell, you don't see a car outside of a house and think "I'm going to sell that". The way you actually steal the cars is really boring once you have unlocked the right tool. I quickly found myself rushing to get the cars out of the way with no planning, the cars are extremely easy to steal just use the tool to pop the lock and go. The first mission where you steal a car you have to break into the persons home and steal the key off their table, then you go down and break open the gate, get into the car and drive away. It sets you up with an expectation that you can find who the cars belong to and then steal the keys from them, you can't; and even if you could nobody would use it since you have this OP tool that opens any car in literally seconds. I would have preferred the game make cars all around the map with keys you had to steal, or maybe even pick pocket, from the owner. It would have just been a nice little extra thing to plan around when choosing a plan of attack for a robbery.

The voice acting is a little weird at times, but you really don't have to listen to people talk for most of the game so it's no too bad overall.

Closing up this long review, I'd recommend this game. If you're looking for the most in-depth story ever or the biggest open world; this isn't for you. However if you want a game that makes you feel like a ninja with kleptomania, taking anything valuable then disappearing into the wind like a fart in the Sahara; this game is for you. There is a good few hours of content and I believe you will get your money's worth.

I am an experienced gamer (with forty-one years experience) and found the setting up of the keyboard and mouse to be irritating beyond belief. What exactly is the problem you might be asking? Well, it's how it's done - there is no reset option for the mapping - none at all. You would expect that there would be a reset option in the key and mouse mapping menu's, but no, there isn't.

Also, and developers pay close attention to the following - it was impossible for me once a key had been chosen in the mouse options menu to change it something else. The only way that this was possible was for me to DELETE my profile. How exactly am I supposed to play and then review a game if I cannot even set it up the way that makes me comfortable? I am NOT impressed. What a waste of my money - this negative experience has left me feeling that if this is what the developers call a flexible mapping system, they really need to go back to school and learn all over again.

How much effort would it be to allow the left and right mouse keys for movement, mouse-look for direction and some option to remove all mappings if the key mapping failed to update? I went in and tried to remap the keys no less than six times before giving up in frustration.

I may update this review after some patches. This isn't a terrible game, but I can't really give it a positive review. It's significantly worse than the first game in most respects. With a terrible menu system, loose controls, less depth in the skill system and less flexibility in the approaches to burglary for any given house. This honestly feels like a quick release to make some money... hopefully on the way to a much better Thief Simulator 2.

While this game is a downgrade to Thief Simulator, it's still good fun and scratches the itch of being a thief.

One huge problem in my opinion is the lack of explanation this game can have in a few cases - I didn't learn you could buy houses until I beat the game, and didn't learn your vehicle had item storage until just before then.

While it does stress the open world design nicely, it kinda falls off the sandbox neighbourhood of Thief Simulator. The town areas are small and have few houses to rob, unlike in Thief Simulator where neighbourhoods had series of homes you could burgle and rob - some of which even took quite a bit of effort to get into once you hit the Rich neighbourhood.

Still, this is a very fun game with a few neat mechanics - not being shot the second you're seen by the cops and instead having the ability to fight them off is pleasant. It just feels short - way too short - an experience.

The previous product is called Thief Simulator because it is a simulator. It provides realistic and engrossing activities between burglaries to simulate the activity.

American Theft 80s (AT80) is a burglary game. It successfully focuses on a particular, game-like activity. One sneaks around and steals stuff.

    • New map feels more spacious, easier to evade pursuit.• Property and tenant-scenario designs more diverse, complex, interesting.• Eighties theme tastefully implemented, not too campy.

    • I found the slight tweaks to the stealth and looting mechanics to be solid improvements, and less prone to random accidental failure.

    Tools! Lots of tools.
Introducing the ability to carry one of three specialized entry tools! Yes, this means one cannot carry every single tool at all times. I think that’s called game balance.

    • The player can now wear disguises to bypass security. • Different anti-security tool system to visually trace wires from cameras and fancy doors to power boxes.
    • New quick-tool interface which is quick.• The new throw-able distractions are fun. • Stamina-enhancing consumables are useful in (pause) the long run.

    • Multiple quest givers, collectibles, and a whole lot of 1980s loot to steal. • Houses to buy, furnish, and display favorite loot.

I think the Music is good. Thematically on-point, pleasantly ambient-mellow, but not simplified to the point of easy listening.

Game Modes

The Story Mode is an excellent series of missions with enough of a plot to merit spoilers, and some of its jobs truly deserve the label, "Heist."
However, this mode forces one to Reload The Save each and every time one is arrested.

The Sandbox Mode provides a much different experience because there is no mechanism to reload the save. If you get arrested, time keeps rolling. This requires the player to escape and hide, instead of consuming a snack and checking one’s phone while everything is magically rolled back to perfection.

Eighties Hair

Big hair is long hair plus product. Heat and solvents lead to haircuts. Suggest sticking to the thickest / firmest hair gel for hair sculpting. One can dilute such gel with a little water for a more familiar hair-unguent consistency.

Great game. Some say it's too similar to Theft simulator, which I disagree, the story has a similar idea, but it's different. On top of that, there are different types of roberies such as bank heists, and other things. Even if it was almost just like thief simulator, that would be great. I currently have 12 hours on the game, which for a game that's sold for $20 (or lower if you get on sale like I did) Is $1.66 / hour of gameplay which imo is pretty good. Also, the 12 hours is not the end of what im going to spend on the game. All in all, great game. Would reccomend

This is a very conflicted Yes. On my rating scale, it's around a 4/7. For the rest of the review, I will use AT80 to refer to this game and TS1 to refer to Thief Simulator, Noble Muffins's first thieving game.

Side Note Before We Begin

Thief Simulator 2 is being developed by another company. As near as I can tell, this was done with Noble Muffins's full blessing and possibly their direction. However, TS2 is not out, so I have no way to compare it to TS1 or AT80.

Graphics/Audio/Plot/etc.

Slight upgrades to TS1 in each, but it still feels very much like an indie game by people who didn't want to bother with anything other than gameplay. The biggest addition that I could see was that there is a lot more voice acting now, but even there, not every line has audio. The engine seems to have been upgraded, but the models are still butt-ugly.

If you are expecting the fidelity of Call of Duty or the aesthetic quality of Sunset Overdrive, you are looking in the wrong place. TS1 and AT80 are all about one thing: that thieving experience.

Base Gameplay

If AT80 had come out on its own, without the existence of TS1, I would say it was a breath of fresh air. So let's first look at it on its own merits.

AT80 is one of very few games which evoke the same feelings as the original Thief/Thief II. In fact, it goes even further, removing all ability to knock people out or fight. Your only real option once spotted is to run for the hills or hide out of sight and wait. But when you're still undetected, there's nothing better than the tense realization that that guard is coming around the corner in a few seconds and you still haven't grabbed the last VHS tape on the other side of the room. Do you sprint to the closet and hope your footsteps are quiet enough to not alert them? Or do you run into the hallway and hope you can get away before they realize what happened?

Nothing, and I mean NOTHING else has the same feeling. Which is probably why I'm so generous in my assessment of its quality.

As a Sidequel

Every single element feels like an experiment on top of the core TS1 experience. The previous game had a single contact for all your jobs? Now you have a small handful giving you simple side jobs. The previous game let you carry all your tools at once? Now you can only carry one of the three big tools at a time, and have to go back to your car to change it. The previous game's NPCs were all immediately hostile and recognized you as a burglar? Now you can wear disguises that let you walk safely through a house as long as you keep your distance. Every single new mechanic is like that: experimenting and expanding the previous game, sometimes in good ways. That is exactly what a sequel/sidequel should do!

So why am I hesitant to embrace this game fully and give it an enthusiastic 6/7? 1) It's still butt-ugly and janky as hell. 2) It also removed a whole bunch of the post-mission experience.
In TS1, when you stole a car, you had to bring it back to your garage and strip a bunch of parts off of it, in an interactive minigame (basically, a chop shop). You then sold each of the parts individually. In AT80, you bring the car to the used car lot and sell it to the cowboy. No minigame, no breather before embarking on the next theft. In TS1, when you stole fancy jewelry or technology, you had to bring it back to your garage and disassemble/hack it in an interactive minigame before selling it. In AT80, every single thing you pick up can be sold directly to the pawn shop, so you can go right on to the next heist.
"But Ibb, it sounds like they stripped away all the cruft and just left the exciting part!" Have you ever tried eating a pie without the crust? It can be fun once or twice, but the crust actually adds an extra flavor profile you can't find in just the fruit/chocolate/meat. In a thief simulator, I want to see the downtime parts and have a chance to relax after the tense sneaking/running sections. Those disassembly minigames provided exactly enough breather room to get me ready for the next burglary (actually, the car ones were a bit too long and fiddly, but that warrants a tweak, not a removal).

Advice to the Developer

The core game in AT80 and TS1 remains fun, so I only have 4 minor suggestions for your next thieving game:
0) Don't worry about the people complaining about bad graphics and jank. I don't think this genre will ever be big enough to throw AAA money at, so keep doing what you're doing; it's good enough.
1) Bring back the downtime segments. Make me spend some time at my house doing something other than sneaking.
2) Don't let me buy the full schedules for every resident for every house. It removes one of the fun steps in the burglary process (carefully observing from afar before I infiltrate).
3) Give the next game a sci-fi, fantasy, steampunk, etc. theme, or set it somewhere other than modern-ish America. It's clear you have fun populating these houses with fun loot, so I'd like to see what you can come up with.
4) Brand recognition is important. I know you didn't want to name this "Thief Simulator 2", but you could have called it "Thief Simulator: American Theft 80s". Yeah, it's a mouthful, but those of us who liked TS1 would have known exactly what you were doing and could jump on it immediately, instead of having to verify that it's the same type of game.

Conclusion/tl;dr

If you played Thief/Thief II before and liked those, and haven't found another game to scratch that itch, I can heartily recommend AT80 or TS1 (pick either one up, try it, buy the other when you want more). If you're unsure, wait for a sale. The quantity of content is worth about 10$ if the quality isn't quite good enough to justify the extra 10$ for you.

Fire [Cr0139]

After the first game I had fully expected this to be a good game. I get the retro style and it being a little bit of a lower quality, that isn't the issue. The issue is that the game feels unfinished. You get stuck on people, the game is very buggy. Overall, not a bad game, but strongly disappointing compared to the original.

AFKprotagonist
AFKprotagonist

Finished the mini-game (space whatever I think) and that was stupidly frustrating, what makes it worse is that it is bugged, sometimes, you would have a health still and the game thinks you died. Other times, and I had 3 health when it happened, I was going to level 2 but it didn't load! At least make sure an annoyingly frustrating mini-game works right. And all that, and not even an achievement to show for it :(

Back to the game, I am enjoying it, just wish it was more polished, just don't have people act like they are talking but there is no sound, that's worse than them not looking like they are talking.
Cutscenes and dialogues are awkward and cringy tbh.
I like the skills idea, just wish there were more of them, and they didn't unlock row at a time.
Edit: Tbf, there are a good amount of items and things to buy, but the problem is that you encounter areas where you need an item before it's unlocked for you, so that's annoying.

Heists are a good addition, too, but no timer is better imo. Climbing fences, etc. I liked those mechanics. The reputation system is good, hopefully if there is a sequel you can focus on that more and give more rewards, make it more meaningful.

It's good. Desperately needs extra neighbourhoods and maybe some better 3rd person detail. The protagonist reminds me of Ryo Hazuki from Shemnue, just not a great character model. Audio is poor too in pretty much every way. The heists need more context too. They felt a bit weirdly implemented.

A VR release would be welcomed.

I'm sensing a lot of proof of concept for thief simulator 2 here, like this is a bit of an expanded tech demo. It's only £15 so not complaining as this is an improvement on original Theif Simulator.

7.5/10 game. Lack of content; allthough a very small team of creators. Not that great prices on the most expensive stuff. A "Bank Heist", is not really a bank heist. There is a Bank, a vault, but your not able to steal the vaults contents(as in, hundreds of thousands of dollars). Also the Art Gallery was a let down. I thought i could get to steal some extremely valuable gems, artifacts, treasure etc, but no... A little too easy to find a way to each and every house. Managed to complete the game in a day and a half. Still recommending, if you want a game with thievery

Just play Thief Simulator.

I've had a dubious eye on American Theft 80s ever since it was announced. I was never fully convinced, and with the full release I am neither happy nor surprised to see that my suspicions were well-founded.

How can I say this with such certainty less than 2 hours in the game? Easy. I've played a solid 20+ hours of Thief Simulator, the developer's previous iteration of this exact same idea. I always thought Thief Simulator was an underdeveloped gem, a fun prototype for a new kind of stealth game which, with a lot of extra time and effort, could've been akin to a Thief set in the real, modern day world.
(I should note, I mean that strictly from a mechanical standpoint, not in terms of story or characters. There was essentially nothing to speak of in those departments.)

It was a long way off, but the potential was clear. I wouldn't have put over 20 hours into it otherwise.
Instead what happened was that development was dropped, Thief Simulator declared a complete experience, and American Theft 80s teased as the next big project. Again, to say I was dubious is putting it lightly.

Nonetheless, I wanted to try this, and to see what new directions had been taken. On that note, here are the things American Theft 80s improved upon from Thief Simulator.
Don't worry, this won't take long.

The map

While there was nothing inherently wrong with Thief Simulator's segmented map, it did mean the game felt like a series of sandboxes as opposed to any kind of coherent suburb. Driving to the edge of an area would bring up a fast travel screen where you pick between travelling home, to the shops, or to a neighbourhood for a spot of looting.

In this regard, American Theft 80s' interconnected map feels a lot more natural and cohesive, if a little claustrophobic since you still can only really stick to approved roads. The pawn shop and your home are in the same "world" as your robbery targets, allowing you to freely drive between them, or even use the rudimentary public transport system to quickly get from A to B, though why you would ever want to begin a robbery without the extra storage space your car provides is a mystery. This also makes police pursuit a more serious threat, as you can't just drive to the map boundary and teleport away. This presumably applies to all maps in the game.

Optional third person

You can now freely switch between playing in a first or third person perspective. While I personally prefer first for this kind of game, there's nothing wrong with giving players the option, so this is appreciated. Unfortunately it does seem as though more effort was put into making the third person perspective look natural as a result, and some first person animations look veeerry wonky.
Squatting is not the same thing as crouching, guys.

Sleeping is better

Yeah, we're really scraping the bottom of the barrel for positives here. Look, planning the timing of your robberies based on tenants' schedules is important, so it's not uncommon that you'll be napping the hours away in your car waiting for the perfect opportunity. The new and improved UI makes this a quick and painless part of the process, when it could sometimes get a little annoying in Thief Simulator.

And that...is honestly about it in terms of improvements. I suppose it kinda looks better? Maybe? Not really? It honestly looks about the same, just with some more saturated colouring, because that's the 80s I guess.

Speaking of, the 80s "aesthetic" means absolutely nothing in terms of gameplay. You're stealing the same shit, just with less electronics and more cassettes or video tapes now. People talk exactly the same way as they did in Thief Simulator, and there's overall very little done with the 80s setting beyond paying tokenistic homage.

So, those are the only additions I have anything positive to say about American Theft 80s in relation to Thief Simulator.

Then what else is new?

Well,

- New music loops, somehow more varied yet more forgettable than Thief Simulator's.

- A new brawling system which makes quick-time events look like masterful video game design.

- A stamina bar which depletes when you sprint, even if you're sneak-sprinting, just to make stealth that little bit less fun. Not like it's a central element of the game or anything.

- A brand new emphasis on cinematics, story, and voice acting. Watch as your favourite planks of wood stand and stiffly deliver dogsh!t dialogue to one another, advancing the rich 'plot' with such wild twists and turns as, "Crack the safe in that house," and, "Go steal a motorbike for me." Personality not included.

- Seriously, this gets two dot points dedicated to it. It's genuinely difficult to describe just how terrible the acting, writing, and direction of all the dialogue and cinematics really is. It's not even cute bad. It's just boring and awful, and contributes absolutely nothing to the game.

- Remember Thief Simulator's underdeveloped skill tree? Not exactly groundbreaking, but quite straightforward. Spend xp to level up, level up to access new equipment or new agility skills, new abilities open up more opportunities for getting around tighter security. Well, wave goodbye to that! Now we get the new and improved skill tree, featuring perks such as: Carry 5% more loot. Carry another 5% more loot. Carry yet another 5% more loot. Carry...you guessed it, 5% more loot. And finally, carry a whopping 10% MORE LOO- oh wait, sorry I misread that, no it's just another 5% more loot.

If that particular skill tree is just a little too hectic for you, maybe the incremental 5% stamina buffs will be more your speed. Or how about the 5% tool durability buffs...
Oh Jesus, speaking of which;

- Tool durability! 'Cause god only knows the thing that was racing through my mind every time I played Thief Simulator was, "You know, I feel like I'm enjoying myself, but wouldn't it really just push this experience to the max if I could only pick a handful of locks before the pick breaks? Or if every few times I broke and entered, I'd then have to go pay to get my crowbar repaired or else risk mild annoyance? That'd really just top it all off."

Remember those timeless moments in classic Thief games, when you'd fire off a rope arrow, and your bow durability would hit 0%, forcing you to go fix it and start the level later?

No.

You don't.

Because the developers weren't braindead.

- Slow open/close has been removed. In Thief Simulator, if you played your cards right, you could loot a house right under the noses of the tenants. Part of playing it right was the quiet interact system, where by holding "E" instead of tapping it, you would slooowly drag open doors, drawers etc. to avoid making noises that might alert anyone in the house. It was good fun, and could be genuinely tense if you got a little impatient and accidentally slammed a cupboard on the second floor, spooking the tenant underneath.

Well that's gone. Just, gone. Holding "E" is a keyhole peek now. Not an entirely pointless addition, but not one that should've been made at the cost of such a fun mechanic.

- Thief Simulator's rather generous jumping mechanic has been replaced with a pathetic half-step. Apparently the player character has had a double knee replacement and really just struggles to get himself off the ground. Forget the days of finding your own path, jumping from the balcony, to the garage roof, onto the awnings to reach an unsecured second floor window. Instead we're blessed with contextual climb prompts, where interacting temporarily turns your character into an Olympian, scaling anything from fences to toll booths in one shoddy scaling animation.

Then you're back to grandpa knees.

I'm literally out of review space to complain. I've had to remove a dot point.

Just buy Thief Simulator. This game has all the same problems, and many more.

Sneak around, steal stuff while avoiding the houseowners, and sell it at the fence. There's also a story and quests, and a skill tree which improves passive abilities such as backpack space, enemy detection or knowing how much value items have.

Haven't played the game much as of now, but it's one of those games where you can dump several hours into, if you like the gameplay.

My review is neutral. The game overall is okay and could've been expanded for a better experience but I'll explain.

OVERALL
The progression of the game is similar, if not the same as thief simulator which for this game is pretty frustrating because you have this open map but limited with places and things to rob because the tools you receive are correlated with the story. The story is bland, I had high hopes with how it started but you (at least for me) don't know what the endgoal of the main character, Jack, until the last few heists/missions. The story is short and the "factions" feel meaningless to tackle unless you care about achievements. The robbing and thieving itself once you get all the tools is fun though, despite some feeling useless (hammer, crowbar).

WHY NUETRAL?
It seems the developers aren't really finished with the game, and certainly feels unfinished. I loved the thief simulator games (on my Nintendo Switch) so this game scratched the itch for something new and relatively fresh, so if you enjoyed their previous titles then this one should be enjoyable for you as well. QOL needs improvement, achievements don't work well, each time I furnish my estate and return later most of my stuff is gone (?) so I gave up trying to enjoy the owning-a-house aspect of the game. The housing aspect was exciting because now you have somewhere to spend your excess cash but even if you fully furnish your house(s), all you can really do is just look at them. Only 2 of the 6 Vehicles have trunks for large items (You'll probably stick with the beginner car through the entire game) so you'll probably never use the cool cars for practicality. I admire they tried to put new systems in place to make things less tedious and more lively but like most things aside from the robbing and story, it feels useless. Graphics is weird, no matter what settings I put FPS doesn't change much or at all, idk maybe just me. Step up from their previous titles though. There are more cons you can read about on the other reviews, but I feel what I mentioned is core to making the game more enjoyable. All this extra stuff to do but nothing to really drive you to do it other than to just finish the game or get achievements.

Another reason I'm keeping it positive is the hopes that future content will make up for what falls flat, like having an actual purpose for owning a home (and works) and making tools and disguises more useful than just picking locks/auto-locking. With the summer sale coming up this would be enjoyable for some at a sale price, ~$10. 6/10, had fun but don't see myself replaying American Theft 80s.

-Sneaking: People can hear you through a brick wall you have to sneak always that you are in range of a npc wall or other thing don't matter at all very unrealistic and crappy sneaking , people will call you the police while chasing you somehow.
-Durability: of tools every use they lose 10% or something like that the crowbar cost over $1000 so every time you use it you have to pay $110 repair cost, I can just imagine the player force to use a $2000 or $3000 tool and paying crazy amounts of repairs just for the heck of it , Repairing a crowbar? like wtf.
-Schedules: Some people don't sleep or work they are in the house all day long is very unrealistic.

+Lockpicking: I do like the lockpicking system is very good one of the best I seen.

If you enjoyed Thief Simulator, you are going to enjoy this, it's basically the same game structure with new features and set in the 80's which I personally love.

Saminski

Loved and played Thief Simulator, was therefore hoping high for this. Everythings more or less in line, my main point of criticism is the lack of a proper feel of progression. While the Skillpoint- and Toolsystem in Thief Simulator managed to motivate you to grind inbetween missions to unlock new things which opened up entirely new ways of gameplay in an over 20hour long robbing adventure, American Theft 80s kind of lacks that sadly. The game features a very short mainquest, which would be totally okay, but in the meantime fails to offer you any exotic tools, cars or features to unlock by just robbing houses and grinding that could enhance your experience on your way. Every new step of the mainquest is bound to using a new tool you have to unlock, which you can mostly afford by spending what youve earned while finishing the preceeding step of said mainquest. "Sidequests" can be done while pursueing mainquest, which normally is a very good thing, but therefore miss out on deepening the gameplay experience, which this game couldve badly needed. Steam displays 15 hours of playtime to date, but I left the game running for around 8 hours in total while being afk, so, if I am generous, Id round that down to about 8 hours of actual gameplay (that includes already goofing around like failing mission more on less on purpose while limittesting AI-behaviour).
After all, I still enjoyed playing the game, but just credits popping up out of nowhere, giving me to understand that Ive seen everything this game has to offer instead of some chaserunlocks like cars or houses which are not really tempting to acquire in a soloplayergame of this scale, took away alot from the exprience. First words of the developers talking about future contentupdates contain new sidecontent. But as long as these updates do not add new chaseritems to grind for, the game will remain to feel kind of flat.
As of right now, I would probably wait for more updates, as soon as this game reaches about 15 hours of varied gameplay, its probably worth the 15 bucks, but right now it feels a bit rushed, almost like early access, so sadly a No for me :(

My basic rule with games is: did I get at least one hour per enjoyment per dollar spent, and if so, it's worth buying. I nearly 100%'d this game in 10 and spend around $16 since buying the two-pack and already having the original Thief Simulator I got a slight discount.

However, I thoroughly enjoyed most of the playtime of this game moreso than I thought I would so I'm giving it a recommendation despite my rule.

What this game has over the original:
* Personally I really liked the 80s vibe to it, not nostalgia for me (wasn't alive back then) but it just really fit well!
* Third person camera just makes the game much more immersive to me which is weird as you'd thing first person would be more immersive but even still having the option to switch at any time is a welcome addition
* The thieving tools feel real and despite some irritation in their break chance that was quickly resolved with skill points, I really liked using them
* The disguises and additional cars to match them really felt realistic and made me feel sneaky by using them
* Searching through cupboards is much smoother than the previous game
* Open world was super refreshing
* Proper Heist missions, these were SO fun

What this game needs improvement on:
* First and foremost, I feel it needs either a content update or a new town DLC. The open world was great but the story felt only about 3/4 complete to me.
* While searching cupboards is smoother than the original, it's far too difficult to select the items inside the drawers. Many times I was accidentally closing the drawer instead of picking up the item. This would be solved easily by making the drawer open command be different than the pick up command imo
* Some loading issues between towns but nothing more than about six seconds, really not an issue to me but bears mentioning
* After the initial starting area, the pawnshop and especially the corrupt cop felt lifeless. For context, in the opening area the corrupt cop sits in a bar and has a proper name, his appearance would be described as "disheveled and morally flexible" whereas the corrupt cop in the second area just stands in the pawn shop wearing cop-sunglasses with his arms crossed... No name. Would be better if each cop had some personality considering there are only the two.
* More heist missions! One of the most engaging new mechanics imo and there are I think only three maybe four? All story missions. It would be great if there were like some daily events you could plan heists around.
* More clearly defined borders to the properties, once or twice I had to run back to swap the hammer for the crowbar and accidentally ended the burglary prematurely, having some defined areas would help to know how close your vehicle has to be
* Driving physics are a little wonky, nothing terrible, just mostly with the expensive sports car it's so low to the ground it'll hit things too easily

Overall I felt it was worth the money I spent on it and I'm looking forward to my next playthrough, whenever that'll be!

6/29/22 "The Sandbox Update"

They released sandbox mode today and also addressed some things stated in this review, we can lock doors behind us now which is very nice. There are exceptions to this, any door we blowtorched, which is a new sandbox exclusive tool to get around us not getting certain keys from storymode, we cannot re-lock. I can accept this even if it kinda sucks cause at least logically we DESTROYED the lock here so of course we cannot re-lock it, still can cause us to get caught now and then annoyingly.

On that same topic, sandbox mode has a few new buildings and devices, adding to my belief the game was rushed out, I hope they can get to the game they visioned originally at some point. Sandbox mode as it is, is kinda rough around the edges, you cannot directly deal with window alarms for example, if you happen to get an rng layout that cannot take you around them (currently a huge issue for the art gallery) you'll find yourself getting extremely frustrated at times.

Still whats here is promising. I hope it gets ironed out.

[original review]A little less janky yet fun

American Theft 80s is a fork stealth thievery game from Noble Muffins, the same developers of Thief Simulator. I call it a fork because it really only derives aesthetically from Thief Sim, fundamentally it plays exactly like it. I do like the 80s aesthetic however, its done pretty well and fairly accurate.

I will say they've gotten better since thief sim, there's more tools to use and ideas at work here. But my same complaint as thief sim is still here, its well over half an already short game before you have everything at your disposal and can just thief how you like. Like I said in the other review, this isn't inherently bad but its a little disappointing because there's very little places you get to go "all out" and feel like you're bringing a massive score home. Namely only few places let you have this massive loot crawl (mayor's mansion, sheriff's manor, industrial section).

Speaking of the mayor's mansion you can sorta see they pushed this out a little earlier than they wanted, if you start going deep into sections of the manor, namely places not used in the story, you'll start to find "empty" rooms. Not that they aren't dotted with furniture, but they are missing stuff to loot and become sort of redundant rooms. there's also a lot of empty wilderness leading up to mayor's manor leading me to believe they did have or will have more planned.

AT 80s also tries to tell some small bit of story in it. I can't exactly if this is good or bad, as most of the cast has just enough depth for you to realize they exist and then nothing more. They lack any real deep reason to care about them. The story also allows multiple endings that don't really change much either, nor do they make too much sense, maybe they make sense if we knew more about the MC but we don't as of reasons stated above. Overall the story is an excuse for a game largely, which is a neutral, neither really good or bad.

The stealth game play is as enjoyable as it is in Thief Sim, and they've learned some lessons and tightened some game play, however it does still make some mistakes it did from thief sim. Cops, and even now civilians since everyone tries to stop you, can defy all logic once cover is blown and can become literally impossible to shake. One of my biggest complaints is people get spooked walking through a door you unlocked/picked, which is fine conceptually because they should get spooked knowing someone broke in, but we have no ability to lock a door behind us. So once a place has a door we unlocked, it becomes a literal time bomb that goes off once a tenant routine makes them cross it. Which is very irritating when you could be "balls deep" into looting a place and suddenly have to run/hide (which turns your thieving grade to "F" Terrible btw for no bonus exp) cause them getting spooked alerts the police, and this feels completely out of your control. Speaking of Exp, another odd annoyance is its pretty much impossible to get enough exp to max all skills, its not literally impossible, but many items do not re-spawn once they've been stolen except for a few very small amounts of things. So exp becomes very thin over time, and while its not impossible to max level, it'd take way more hours than anyone would want to sensibly put in.

Over all this game however was pretty positive, I had a lot of fun going through it, and they've already announced there's more coming to it. I recommend this.

GRIDGET100=
GRIDGET100=

The game is very very realistic when it comes to actually breaking into someones house which is literally whole the point of this game when it comes to stealing that losers shit!! The cops are like AI cops from GTA 1 but that makes stealing that losers shit, all the much easier!! Although if the cops spot you, you gotta deal with GTA 5 cops. Other than that I would highly recommend this game for its realism aspect.

----- *SPOILER ALERT* ------

Overall fun game, however it felt like an extended prologue to something bigger.
In my opinion, the story was too short, and there were some QOL changes that could be made to be a lot better. Compared to TS1, it was much better because of the map quality, it felt like it could be an actual town and the new features such as disguises, heists, and the voice acting. However, I felt that it didn't address one the main problems of TS1: that there weren't enough unique ways to break into houses. I think that the auto lock pick should not exist, and instead there should be more ways to break into properties. This game did well in that jumping over and onto things was possible, which allowed for better ways to enter properties. I also enjoyed that there was a bank heist, however was disappointed that the bank was only used for one heist and the player didn't see any of the money. I think that disguises were a fun addition, and enjoyed that they bypassed cameras. Especially the mission of breaking into the sheriff's mansion during a party. Finally. I disliked, however, the way that the good or bad ending is assigned.I don't see how buying estates or even cars (not talking about requests) could affect the story's ending.

I love the game overall but I think the ending is underwhelming. It's not much harder to get into the final house than it is most other places. I get that its the 80s but maybe something more military and guarded would be nice. Also if the devs see this I'd love to do voice acting work for this game :)

I 1st saw the trailer for this game on Facebook and immediately dismissed this as being a fake game but it intrigued me so wishlisted and upon release I figured I'd give it a go and honestly the devs should be proud it's honestly a pretty fun game especially for a small indie studio the fact that they also want to add more and are engaging with the review comments and asking for improvements from the community really show how committed they are I wish this was seen more in AAA studios

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with this gem so far it has a really cool 80s aesthetic along with some funny dialogue and gameplay is rather fun it has you going around houses and stealing various goods it's free roam too so you also have story missions to accompany pretty much any house or business you can steal from and you can then choose to sell those goods and the more you steal and the better you are then graded at the end by the goods you take and if you get spotted then you earn skill points which consist of see how much items go for, more inventory space and a bunch more.

Of course don't go into this game expecting tons of things it's still a small game but for a small developer team it's honestly a really fun game and yes you will run into the odd bug but the devs are constantly working to fix those.

It's quite fun so far. If you liked Thief Simulator, you'll like this one. It's a bit janky, but what did you expect?

The good:
Different to Thief Sim, the mechanic to hold the button to open doors and drawers to do it slowly was taken out. Some of the tension was taken away because of it, but I don't mind. This feels a bit more arcadey.
Robbing houses and selling stuff is still as fun as ever. This time around, the game has more of a focus on a story, which is good enough. Proper cutscenes and so on this time. Definitely a bit more effort than Thief Sim.
There are also disguises you get to use every now and then. Not often though.
And some special missions, called heists, which break the pattern a bit and are quite fun. The bigger places are robbed this way (at least the first time).

Could be better:
You get to buy some new cars but they aren't as useful as the van, because as far as I can tell, they don't have a trunk... Which is a pity as the van is a bit slow and not as nice to drive.

A bit more 80s music would be appreciated.

The houses you can buy, you can decorate, but so far that's all you can do with them. Hope the devs do something with these mechanics.
A suggestion: Maybe as an end game activity we could have our own business in town, like a bar/arcade. And we'd need to steal the inventory from other places, like the Arcade, or the VHS store, to make things more presentable and get more customers in.

Overall I enjoyed it and hope there's some more stuff coming. A good successor to Thief Sim.

American Theft 80s is about what I expected having played Thief Simulator in the past. It improves upon its predecessor in ways a sequel should, but of course, it still has room for improvement. It's not a high-budget game from a AAA development company, so those expectations should go out the window immediately. That's not to say it's a bad game or poor quality, but you shouldn't go into it expecting a cinematic or gameplay innovation. For its asking price of $19.99 ($17.99 during the current promo or $16 if you already own Thief Simulator), you'll get your money's worth. It's a simple and straightforward game that, like Thief Simulator, can be completed if you race through it.

There isn't much in terms of a storyline or narrative; it starts off pretty simple and rather foolish—the main character, Jack, is compromised during a heist of the mayor's house and is thrown in jail. A shadowy figure gives him the key to his cell and instructions to meet a character at the local bar. From there, you're let loose on the town to rob its citizens blind. American Theft 80s is one of those games where either it needs a good plot or none at all. Ignore it and just play the game for what it is.

It's fun, mildly addicting, but like Thief Simulator, it gets repetitive quickly. However, for the price of admission, it's worth it. There's a demo available, so give it a whirl before purchasing if you're undecided. Coming from Thief Simulator, I like American Theft 80s and I'm looking forward to future updates.

So, it's a fun little retro-themed Thief Simulator game. It's way, way shorter than the previous game, but also generally more straightforward. I found it worth the price overall and entertaining.

There's definitely a few bugs, but if you're familiar with the developer that's hardly a surprise. Nothing too crippling, although I miss the ability to throw large objects over walls and fences to make gathering easier.

The gameplay was generally good. There's fewer tools, but considering it's the 80's that generally makes sense. It's also a smaller map overall, with fewer houses and less loot to grab. Loot also seems to respawn extremely slowly, to the point where cleaning out a house is really only worth it once you've checkmarked everything.

Overall, definitely a fun but somewhat smaller game than I was expecting.

This is Thief Simulator, but much much much more polished. I still don't know how varied the missions will be or how many missions am I going to find, but since I LOVED Thief Simulator, I am going to already review positive for the improvements I see.

The game had good points and bad points.

bad points
the citizen AI was a bit buggy with cars just sometimes being stuck in random trees or would be too reactive to a disguised character if i ran for a short duration then resumed walking before i was close.

I also had gotten locked into a few houses while disguised (mark one side as inside and the other as outside and make it so if you are on the inside where you normally could lock something that it can open)

the radius around a building sometimes being to small that when i ran to put a few things in storage it would ether reset the room or would give me the credit of multiple S ranks for me breaking into the same room.

entry points and routines being overlapped a little weirdly making some missions just irritating and finckie on timeings (betamax being the most noticeable)

distractions just not being heard

driveing in third person doesnt let me hear the music all that well

the rules for detection of burglary and police could use improvement

wanted a faction to lower house prices and for them to have more use

not being able to give to the "merchent" from storge

the placement of some doors limiting the use of the disguise mechanic at times. (what doorbell do i ring. This guys houses is locked behind two doors. where can i go disguised and were cant i go. more keys being able to be stolen to just unlock the place)
Good points

i enjoyed the variety of cars and vans

i enjoyed the references and the npc's

the voice acting was spot on

the endings (yes good and bad i know it doesnt show credit for good i did it offline and removed my save before getting back online) while lack luster did gave a sense of closer though i wanted a little bit more out playing a extra two hours

the game had a nice pattern scope out the place. run the mission

disguises being a decent use to finish side missions easier
the heist were well guided and laid out

the missions and reputation naturally flowed into each other. such as o im doing a story heist look two toasters or having 4 spaces in the van just enough for 3 boxes of something and this portable tv that i needed for the one dude. Which saved me a lot of back tracking

overall the varity of stores and each having items tailored for them

the one choice where their was two ways of getting the list (it didnt really keep doing that later in the game and it was hard to have that amount just rushing to it but it was vesiable and i appricate the option)

the varity of the type of side missions and the feel of the mini games

the arcade rocks and my only remark on it is get rid of my characters face, let me put more quarters in, give me more reputation, and the able to write down my highscore i want to feel the impact of me beating his score.

copy the floopies was a fun and easy way of "hacking"

My closing remarks is this game was fun and worth the money. Yes there are things that can be improved and it isn't perfect. It however had charm and felt like a stop gap side story where they experimented with things in preparation for future games like thief simulator two (they mention in others comments its not quite the same but i am personally hold them to the same level as they are by the same publisher and everyone will consider them grouped as a result.) I felt they could of taken more from previous games of similar genre (theif deadly shadows, theif simulator, hit-man) but the characters where a lot more fleshed out then other titles then alot of the published titles under their belt and the extremes made me laugh. They didn't try to make you repeat to much and even with out doing side quest that didn't appear organically right beside the main quest i feel i always had just enough money that i could do the main quest non-stop.

So after completing the main story but not 100% completing and getting the bad ending my review is as follows:

Game play:

You are a thief who will stop at nothing to get what he needs for his client, The stealth is pretty good but still feels a bit clunky but this isn't an AAA developer so its great for what they will have. The items make you feel as though you are in the 80's along with the music it's just 80's heaven for me a guy who was not born in the 80's but loves them all the same.

Visuals and Items:

Very well played, I feel as though you are in some old gaming machine with 2005 style graphics. The items are all very well made and I didn't find any buggy items but you know I don't play to find bugs, I play to see what the developer has created for me. The vehicles all look good to so that's a bonus.

Music:

It's great it reminds me so much of the 80's on some of the tracks, EDM and early trance. Could add more or the option to add your own music you know we all love our 80's vibe right...

Re-play ability:

There is definitely tons of hours of fun to have on this game as it's like thief simulator it can become a sandbox for you to try everything.

Improvements and suggestions:

Place add snapping for kitchen items in the home it would be so nice, Apart from that add more content in the future like you did with the previous game as I want to keep being Jack with more content (I will add more to this section in the future)

Score:

I give you an S+ for taking many hours of my time and giving me another fun little robbing simulator.

Thank you for reading and keep up the good work it's definitely worthy of buying 100% in my opinion!

small team, big impact. this game is exactly the right kind of "B" game. low price point, polished, and most of all designed well. I had a lot of fun, and if I wanted to put more time in I could have, but I'm satisfied. This game is satisfying, and does what a lot of smaller games don't: it works exactly as intended.

a+, can't wait to see what else this team makes

Imagine Thief Simulator 3. That's what this is.

Break into houses, Steal valuables, pawn them off. Earn rep with a biker gang, try not to get caught.

Steal cars for extra cash.

It's a decent stealth game if you like the idea of being a house robber. That's basically what this game is.

Rating: 10/10 fun in it's own special way. Doesn't seem buggy or anything.

They upgraded everything, still an indie title at the end.

The main storyline is fun, but makes you grind at least an hour at some parts to afford items you need to move forward (which can be a good thing if you like the game!) The 80s theme is what makes this game and they even have good detail making the peds and cars and music 80 themed. For $15, and about 10 hours of gameplay, I would pick it up! Can't wait for Thief Sim 2!

I like this game .. way better than thief simulator in my opinion .. yea the graphics and physics isnt outstanding but it does the job to have a lot of fun ..

it's *ok* but not worth the money yet. needs some way to reset or quit missions. i'm still early in the game, but i hate having to load a previous save and lose all my progress. on the bike parts mission, i set down the box and it went flying through the air, circling at high speed in a large loop. tried to sleep in the lot, and the box stopped moving. when i went to the new marker, it was nowhere to be found. this sort of thing is very annoying and really the ground-level sort of glitch that should be ironed out before release.

edit: i feel like things are shaping up + the game is actively getting updates. i was also satisfied with the positive and personal dialog with the dev.

I have only been playing the game for 30 minutes and I'm still stuck in this bloody jail cell, I have restarted my game and made a new save and I have tried playing on a keyboard and controller. Every time I pick up the key and go to use it, I press the action button it tells me to use, it then freezes for a few seconds, then works again but after it, I cannot use the action button again, I can't pause it and I can't do very much of anything but turn around in the cell! Nothing seems to be working so I tried reloading again but at the start when looking for the safe, I tried another door in the house and pressed the action button as it told me to do and it did the same thing so, it's nothing to do with the cell, I think its a glitch. Please help because I would like to play the game :( Help @noblemuffins

I am very much enjoying the game. My only complaint would be that on hard mode, it makes no sense to invest skillpoints into 'observation' (or whatever it's called), since it's supposed to make it easier to spot camera's and see 'enemies' through walls, which is not an option in the first place on hard mode.

I might only have a low playtime but this game is great. So far it's everything I want in a thief simulator from robbing the items in houses which is addicting, stealing cars and selling all the items to buy properties, vehicles and tools to help you steal more! Yes, its janky but with some more polishing this game could be perfect in time. Loved the fact I could play the prologue for free to get a taste of what kind of game it was and how it played and therefore, they made an easy sale from me. Thanks devs!

Beat it over the weekend, had a good time playing it as I queued up an 80s synth wave spotify playlist in the background and immersed myself into being an 80s criminal. I liked the open world concept which made it an improvement over their other thief simulator. If you are expecting anything more than a few days of game play you will be disappointed.
