This is a fun little game. The controls are a lot less annoying than the first instalment. It's not an RTS game, but more of an action shooter with some RTS elements. It's not expensive, so if you're looking for a cheap, simple time killer, this isn't a bad choice.
Great game from my childhood,if you played the campaign, it seems to run as expected and the controls are very much as they were back in the day. Wish this was a remaster, so the aspect ratio could at least me changed, but honestly it's as fun and beautiful as it was in 1999 =) (I still own this on cd, but once I saw it here I could actually play it without running separate programs)
Dispite what my profile says, I actually have days worth of time on this game. I first played this when I was about 11. I got it in an Army Men Pack, which included Army Men, Army Men II, Air Cav/helicopter (Can't remember the actual name), and Army Men: Toys in Space.
Though Toys in space had the most updated stuff, Army Men II was my favourite. If it was not for this game, I may not have ever gotten into top down video games. 23 years later, I pick this up just to remember the good ol' days. If you're looking for a fun retro game with great music, Get this one.
Quick Summary:
-If you are Army Men fan, just buy the game.
-Works with Windows 10.
-The game is the same as when it was released. (I think)
I have always wanted to play this game during my childhood, but at the time I couldn't get this game. So, this is my first time playing the game (However, I have played Army Men and Army Men Toys in Space before).
Here are some pros and cons comparing to Army Men I.
Pros:
- The controls are better than Army Men I :
> You can use your mouse to aim and also to move by left-click (in Army Men I, you have to use keyboard to rotatate/aim).
- Better squad controls/system :
> You can order them individually (attack, defense, hold) but you can not fully control them like Sarge.
> In campaign, your squad member can level up, which increase their HP. Not sure about other stats.
> In campaign, at the end of a mission, if your squad members are alive, they will go with you to the next mission with their improved stats.
> Squad mates are smarter, more useful, easier to control. And they comes with variety of weapons.
- Improved graphics.
- Difficulty options
- Great story potential and news characters. but.... (see cons)
Cons :
- Game is shorter, I think.
- Weird music choices, I don't know how to explain this (lol), but it's not that bad.
- Story sounds interesting and has high potential, but executed poorly and has little impact on missions.
>>
> There are 4 antagonists: Major Maylars, Dr. Madd, Rogue Green colonel, General Plastro.
> The introduction of MM is very interesting but his role is only that he took over the Tan army and that is only implied. At the time I don't even know that, I still have to fight the Tan army like usual. No impact to the story. What was the point of this guy???
> Dr. Madd is a guy from Grey army who creates zombies and other technologies. This character is good in his way.
> Rogue Green colonel. His arc is good but the only problem is that it is implied that something/somebody makes him go rouge but in the end there is no answer to that.
> General Plastro, it is implied that he was taken over by MM. So, it make sense that he is not mentioned in the game that much, I think.
> Few back story dialogs/radio/in game voice to explain the current situation on Major Mylar take over. I don't mind few CG cutscenes (it's an Army Men game not MGS) but if they are going to have some more complex story, they should do a better story telling.
> At the end of the day, the overall story is ok. But may be, I was expecting too much from a game from 18 years ago.
Good game! Brings back my childhood.
This is my first time of full review of a game. So if there are any mistakes on the game, feel free to correct me.
Although it has no multiplayer function, but still as good as my last memory.
No Skirmish (Player vs AI) mode, which is what I purchased the game for.
Unless you want to play the campaign and campaign only, I would not buy the steam version of this game.
this game is great!!! it may take some time to get it working tho
Finish the game about 2 hours. God, so many memories, it has been almost 20 years. I was a little 9 years old boy on 1999. My father's friend brought me a disk of army men 2. I was falling in love with it. The only bad thing is some controls are not very good. If you grow up as have a girl friend or wife with kids, you should buy this game as a memory.
I had this game back in the day for my old Dell computer. The nostalgia hits me hard. Biggest upset? They removed Player Vs. AI multiplayer. I can understand removing the online servers, but the offline? C'mon.. that's the main reason I purchased this title again. Offline multiplayer needs to be brought back. That's the main reason people buy this game. If you loved the campaign (Which I did) then get this! If you want this game for the AI multiplayer, then I'd hate to burst your bubble.. which is why i won't recommend this game. Once I get the multiplayer back, I'd definetly recommend it. It was a lot of fun and I would love to see it return.
The game unfortunately didn't age well but I'm here for the memories so I'm recommending it lol. Worked fine on Win 10.
One of my favorite games of all time growing up. As an adult, I can say with confidence that this game has aged well, mechanically and graphically. (Although a Fullscreen or windowed option implpemented would be nice, if you tab out... your computer will do... something else.) Great game to waste time on and spam cheats on though. Pllay with hundreds of troops or go classically through the campaign, quick and easy. Best game of the entire series before Sarge's Heroes came around. And the stuff when Sarge's Heroes came out and after still doesn't compare to Army Men II.
Fantastic game!
P.S.: When all else fails...
I FINALLY GOT THIS GAME AND I CAN PLAY IT AFTER TWELVE YEARS OF WAITING.
Multiplayer, and therefore Player vs Computer skirmishes are not currently activated for this game, though there are ways to make it functional again. That game mode alone brings 4 sided combat, casualties that can become zombies, and as much plastic chaos as you can handle. It makes the most of what Army Men II has to offer and is lots of fun. Results may vary but getting it to work again is well worth the effort. I just wish it was simply included from the start.
Anyway, the game plays very smooth. Though the graphics are obviously not as good as today's standards everything looks pretty good, just don't expect widescreen because this game was designed for square monitor screens that were standard back in the day. The game controls are dated but I never felt like the controls were the cause of my deaths.
Overall it is a nice revival. This game along with Army Men RTS are the go-to games to check out the series for the first time, or to rediscover it for nostalgia's sake. I know there are still a few games from the series still MIA. I hope to see them added to Steam.
It is a fun throwback to the game I played as a child. However I finished the main story in a couple days and with the confusing removal of multiplayer there is not much else to do. I would say that if multiplayer is added in later it is more than worth buying it. But until then save your money for games that offers more than just nostalgia.
army men 2 it's one of those game are take you back to your childhood well done you probably have one great imagination or one messed up imagination army men 2 is an isometric shooter with some light RPG/RTS elements you play as sergeant Hawk your mission rid of the evil tan army use a variety of weapons for example grenades bazookas and the ever-present flamethrower fortunately though the graphics are out of date and your AI Partners and not the smartest some of the levels can be so difficult pull your hair out but underneath all the crap and grime there is a gem waiting to be play so grab your rifle and your helmet I get ready for one hell of a war in conclusion I would highly recommend this game
Where the hell is the multiplayer?! Bot play skirmish's were fantastic in this game!
The fact they took away the mulitplayer options makes me pissed i even got the game
THE STEAM VERSION IS ALTERED FROM THE ORIGINAL-- THEY REMOVED THE MULTIPLAYER GAMEPLAY. As a kid I used to love playing the multiplayer feature against computer players; it was my favorite part of the game. Sad to see it was REMOVED from the Steam release.
A certain upgrade from the first Army Men!
Over all this captures the original style of play with a bit more refined controls.
GamePlay is okay in the sense of objective and combat, a strange mix between RTS and top-down 3rd person shooter.
Soundtrack is really bad, like bottom of the free music barrel bad, disabling music will resolve this.
Graphics are solid for the age considering it is almost 20 years old.
Overall this is an alright game if you are looking for old-school games but outside of that it's certainly nothing you would look twice at.
Get this game on sale.
I love the smell of burning plastic in the morning...
This game is trash. Do not buy. This doesn't include multiplayer--and that's the only thing i wanted to play. Even the "Fix" doesn't work. Don't buy.
Don't buy. The offline multiplayer mode i knew and loved isnt even on here so your left with a pretty boring campaign i'm going to see if i can get my money back because it was not made clear that you couldn't play it even offline. Seriously don't waste your money.
Great game, but really wish multiplayer was still there :(
So, I bought this just to write the review, but I remember waking up early in the morning as a kid before school just to play this. This is my single favorite game of all time and the memories this game brings back can only be discribed as
"Eyes closed remembering days long gone with a smile and a nestalgic tear". I already had 1 and 2 on GOG, but how could I resist my favorite game?
Anyway though, even without the multiplayer, it still holds that warm feeling I got when I played it as a kid.
A classic example of a good game. It's not too different from the old disc version... speaking of disc, I still have my discs for the origional... I own too many copies of this game.

It's been almost 20 years since I last played this game and I've only just now managed to complete the campaign. It's still exactly like I remember it, I've enjoyed reliving my childhood playing through this game again. The only problem is now that I'm older, I can see all of the flaws that I never even thought about back then.
The franchise needs no introduction, but I will say that this is, without question, a massive improvement over the first game (which I'd never actually played until the games came to Steam) in terms of just about everything, the interface is better, graphics are improved and there is much, much more variety, but the biggest improvement is the control, but that's not saying it's perfect here either. Army Men II allows mouse movement control similar to Cannon Fodder (minus separate buttons for moving and firing), which alone makes it rise above the first game massively, that being said, the control is also hardest thing to overcome. In the first few missiosn of the game, I am sure that you will find yourself more frustrated than anything else trying to master incredibly clunky controls, which is the last thing you want in any game, let alone in a series that is notoriously difficult with most weapons inflicting massive friendly fire. You will get used to and master the control before too long, but it's a shame that it's a hindrance in the first place.
As much as I love this series, most of it's titles are ones that show their age and not in in a good way, but I just can't say no to recommending them either... I think the best way to summarise things would be to say that these games are good because they play exactly the same as they did back in the day, but they're also flawed for the very same reason.
If instead of buying all classic Army Men titles like I did and are thinking about buying only one, get Army Men II, it's easily the best of the bunch available on Steam. Just bear in mind that this game is 20 years old and it's control scheme massivlely reflects that, but if you played it back in the day, pick it up again, I enjoyed my time with it.
On one final note, for whatever reason, the Steam version of this game removes the Multiplayer mode, which I can understand in terms of online play in this day and age, but as a result of this, the offline Skirmish mode against the AI is also gone, which is a bloody shame as it was one of the best aspects of the game. Non-the-less, the campaign is a fun and challenging little trip.
This was one of the games of my childhood, so i have some nostalgic feelinga bout it. And that is the reason i brought it, because for everyone who don't know, this game has the one of the most terrible controls ever knew to men. It can be fun, the missions are fun and melting your plastic enemies into a puddle feels great, but everything does down the drain because of the controls.
I really like this game, and would love to see some version with a better system, but damn this is hard to play again.
good to play this game again but why did they remove the offline multiplayer? was there a reason?
The removal of the multiplayer skirmish is one thing, but my issues is that the game always crash whenever i alt-tab, or there is a notification that force the game to go minimized, since the game will only run in full-screen mode, and won't even load in a windowed mode. any notification will force it to minimize then crash. it's almost unplayable except you disable all sort of notification. then again you still can't alt-tab in case you want to do something else without closing the game
This was one of my first games that I played growing up, was basically my introduction to computer gaming along with Battlefield 1942 and Command Conquer. The game is just as good as I remember it (I could never figure out how to skirmish vs AI in this when I was growing up so I can't say I terribly miss it.) although there are some hardware issues. I've had to drastically lower the pointer speed to make it cooperate, otherwise the game is fine and runs perfectly on Windows 10.
c h i l d h o o d m e m o r i e s
still as great as i remember. although the missing multiplayer option takes a big chunk out of the game
This was definitely a nostalgic game for me as a kid. I loved playing through it with my siblings, each of us taking turns. Game play aspect is a little wonkey but still pretty good for being mad more than 10 years ago!
Steam fucked it, no skirmish/multiplayer option, buy a real copy.
I used to play this game as a kid still love it to this day!
Actually I wanted to play the multiplayer against AI, but unfortunately it has been removed, at least I can still play the single player.
It works on my Windows 10
I bought this game thinking that it still had the multiplayer option. (against the computer) to my disappointment i finished the campaign thinking that it would unlock the option.... (unsure why... but took me 5 hours...) completely destroyed me when i finished it, as the multiplayer option is the only reason why i bought it. don't by it if you want to relive your childhood gaming, like i did.. you will only be crushed. otherwise, good game. blast from the past.
I was one of those who played this game on MSN Gaming Zone CONSTANTLY. This was my favorite of the entire Army Men SAGA, even more than Toys in Space and Sarges Heroes. If you want to take a trip to down memory lane, here it is.
Somehow the Steam version of this game made the controls even worse from the original. There is a bug where the mouse becomes unresponsive and it just so happens that you really need the mouse to work for this game.
Also no multiplayer.
Way-way better than the first Army Men
but the mouse is kinda glitchy :(
Cautions! This game is imcompatible with a wide variety of model sets, from low ends to high. In addition, like many have said ,it's an incomplete version of the original game. Excluding Multiplayer mode eliminates 70% of fun. You can get it on a very cheap price, but be prepared face some diappointment.
great game i just wish there was a shirmish mode for the game on steam like there is for the disk
Good Old game nice to play it again after over 15 years
It's everything I loved about the original BUT there's no multiplayer :( that was by far my favorite part of the game. Playing against AI was the best.
please add multiplayer vs bots! as well as the 6 rare addon multiplayer maps
compared to army men 1, the controls are slightly tweaked, but still god-awful. the grafics were slightly improved as well, but the difference is marginal. only good thing is, it‘s shorter than its predecessor, so it’s over much sooner.
like most other army men games, army men II is a prime example of an interesting premise ruined by blundering execution.

ARMY MEN II
Genre: Casual Action
Release: Q1 1999
( ) 0/8 Simply one of the worst games ever made. Don't waste any money on this.
(X) 1/8 Bad. Seriously flawed with barely any redeeming qualities. Worth a couple of Cents at best, if at all.
( ) 2/8 Sub-par. Only for hardcore-fans of respective genre / series. Don't pay more than 5 bucks.
( ) 3/8 Meh-diocre. It‘s okay. Don't pay more than 10 bucks.
( ) 4/8 Decent, but not for everybody. Don't pay more than 15 bucks.
( ) 5/8 Good game, Must-play for genre- / series-fans. Worth 20 to 25 bucks max, if you are not a fan.
( ) 6/8 Great game, universal recommendation. 30 bucks would be a steal for this.
( ) 7/8 Outstanding game, a milestone of it‘s respective genre. Definitely worth its full prize.
( ) 8/8 Simply one of the best games ever made. Get this, the prize doesn't matter.
Screen resolution is too small. Back when I'm playing this on steam, it was fitted through my screen
I havent played this game in almost 20 years. I never actually completed this game as a kid but I was rather surprised I managed to beat it this time around in just under 5 hours. I did love every minute of the nostalgia however.
Sadly, as mentioned here frequently in the reviews, there is no mode except the campaign. I use to do big battles against the computer but they have removed that feature.
The multiplayer mode was unfortunately removed, but I've heard there was a way to add it back, if you still have your old AMII disc.
Out of the four AM games that exist on both Steam and GOG right now (AM1, Toys in Space, World War) this one is probably the most "balanced", and probably the easiest experience.
Gameplay is a little finicky, as you can't walk through squad mates and occasionally get stuck behind them (and controlling them is a bit of a hassle, which later titles rectify), but for most sections of the game you can solo it as Sarge and call up your troops whenever you feel like you need backup. For those who played this growing up, it's probably just as you remember it, without the Skirmish mode.
Played this a ton as a kid. Love it.
Unfortunately, the game is not nearly as playable now as back when it was released. The main problem is the awful mouse support in this version. For that reason alone I have to give a negative review.
I really want to buy this game again and give it a chance since it's now compatible with W10, but this time I see from the comments that the AI skirmish mode is removed. Is there a logical explanation from the publisher as to why this is removed?
A childhood classic! Unit control is very awkward. But hey, which 20-year-old RTS game isn't? :3
So far, so good. With their sequel to Army Men they've really taken the "tactics" part of the genre seriously and I'm liking the change! Missions feel much more fair than in the original when you die as most of the time it gives you a wide range of strategies to choose from with the looser, more open levels. The game seems much shorter than its predecessor with only a handful of levels, but hey, quality over quantity right? They've kind of sacrificed the gritty wartime atmosphere however, with Sarge sounding more badass and other soldiers having quips they often say. They even named General Plastro for the first time (he was simply known as the tyrannical Tan Commander in AM1).
I wouldn't say all changes are good, however. The music is no longer those military drumbeats throughout every level and is instead mostly low bitrate tunes of classical music. Sounds like an improvement, but for a realtime tactics game set in a war environment it's seriously unfitting and distracting as hell from the gameplay. I just turned it off since it got on my nerves as soon as it began, and I'd recommend you do the same too. Also the new control scheme with all the tactical stuff you can do does feel pretty awkward, and although your allies AI is much better than the previous game's, it's still not that good and they can and will just screw you over as they do not prioritise the mission's objective as far as I can tell.
It still has a lot of awkward, cheap jank from the first game. One of the most revealing areas of this is the 7th mission, where you get screwed over by you and enemy soldiers constantly getting stuck on invisible walls and bullets hitting stuff that it shouldn't be hitting. Firing at zombies is also hellish because of this, you have to basically completely rely on the old man to kill them since most of the time your bullets just phase through them.
Overall a pretty good Army Men all things considered. It's better in the first few stages and gets much worse as you progress due to cheap jank and poor level design, but it's still a pretty solid game.
Oh nostalgia. Plastic Army Men? Classical Metal? Interesting story? Simple Game play.
Man that's so disappointing.... No Multiplayer/Skirmish THE BEST PART, why was it removed? only rating thumbs up for the new players
Played this game a lot as a child, glad i can play it again. Love these old school army men games!
alot of the things in here like skirmish and multiplayer is gone, but overall i still love how the game is, its good as i remember when i was a little dumbass.
Army Men II might actually be the greatest game of all time. So many good memories on this man, used to play this game nonstop.
Grew up with this game and i still think it holds up quite well, the environments are really unique and memorable like the Kitchen level aswell as the sound effects alot being stock sounds but fit this game nicely. You can battle against alot of different enemies like cockroaches, zombies and ants to name a few.
Downsides would be multiplayer and skirmish is not available in this version, so all you've got is pretty much the campaign but if you're looking to try an RTS game from the 90s, this game is still alot of fun.
EVEN WORSE THAN THE FIRST GAME!!!!!!!!!!!
Army Men 2 is a fantastic tactical strategy game. Although Heat.Net is long gone for online multiplayer, it is to my understanding there is a way to play multiplayer on Steam. But I digress. The Campaign of Army Men 2 is fantastic. If you're looking for a simple game to play, this would be the one.
I didn't grow up with this game, though I played other Army Men games as a kid. With this in mind, I feel like Army Men ll is a pretty decent game, even twenty years later. The game has you play as Sarge, who commands a small squad of green soldiers. In this game you have to fight Major Mylar, a sussy baka who has taken over the tan army and is pushing the entire green nation at the brink of destruction. It's a top down strategy game where you need to watch what happens to your soldiers, how much ammo you have on your weapons, and enemy positions as you go through the game. This game has extremely intense moments when you fight off against hordes of soldiers, while keeping your own boys alive and well. This game features many really fun moments, like the second mission, airfield mission, tank factory defense, zombie island, and more. The game also does a fantastic job making the player feel like they are all that stands between victory and total annihilation of your army. There's some missions that tend to have a lot of trial and error moments but this game can be beaten reasonably quickly. Some parts really show their age, the graphics of the game will instantly show how old it is, but despite being old it still is endearing. The A.I. of your allies, however, can sometimes get goofy when trying to follow you around tight corners, but getting stuck unless you move them yourselves or try to walk around the corner again. However, it's a cheap game that can provide hours of enjoyment for anyone who spent years playing with plastic soldiers who wishes to relive those memories.
Great old game, needs patch to include offline pc skirmish multiplayer
Built a computer with 5950X, 3090Ti alone with 360Hz monitor and the next day, realize Army 2 is now on Steam. There is no way to skip this game!
However! I cannot recommend this game because they removed my favorite mode, which is player vs. AI in multiplayer menu. This menu is completely gone, just like other reviewer experienced. Hope they would add player vs AI back! I guess this version of the game will just sit in my Steam collection pile to collect dust once I finish the story line once again!
