I play just the base game as some of the expansions add features I don't yet understand. It's good fun. I play on tablet too.

One of my all time favorite deck building games and I am just in awe at how good it works as a PC and mobile game. Definitely worth buying and getting the DLC bundle if you and your friends enjoy the game because the card variations can keep the game fun for ages!

Easily the most accessible and deep deck building mechanics out there. This is also great value for anyone who already owns a physical set and is interested in playing more.

You get most of the expansions for free with a single purchase, which is nice. If you're on the fence the mobile version is free and is basically an identical version of this.

A wonderful deckbuilding game. My hours don't reflect hundreds spent playing the identical mobile version.

Possibly my tendency to just throw in lots of expansions, but the game feels a bit chance-heavy at times (some great / undervalued card pops up after you perform your actions, the opponent snags it up), but I have lots of fun playing it casually.

Huge fan of the actual card game and this is a great way to play with friends remotely or to just brush up on your tactics for the next irl game.

It's a good game, and the digital representation is fine. But the arbitrary caps on honor points limits the fun you can have. Worse, Playdek is committed to keeping it that way.

This has been said before, but want to echo that. They already got my money; at least they won't get my recommendation.

Ascension is my favorite deck building game out there. Virtually all of the expansions are on Steam for a very reasonable price. The AI is decent and gives me a chance to play the game much for often since not all of my board gaming friends are into Ascension. Additionally, when my friends and I do play together online, keeping track of runes, powers, and score is so much simpler.

This is a must buy for Ascension fans who want to play more on their free time.

There is just not enough player activity to make it worth the purchase. It is unfortunate because it can be a lot of fun.

Accessible and exciting. The end of each game manages to convince you that you need another. Game is well supported, and the price is more than reasonable for what you get. Has replaced Dominion for me, and is a better theme for me than Shards of Infinity

Really amazing and well put together digital adaption of a fun card game. This digital edition is a far more economical way to play and experience this game to. You get the core set and all but three of the current expansions with the $12.99 purchase, and they add more expansions to it as time goes on, or you can buy them early if you want to. I love the UI, it's very easy to use. The Hard AI is very reasonable to play against. I love how each set has a theme you can set on your game screen and each set has a rule book you can pull up at any time to see how the mechanics work. Highly recommend.

I've been looking into alot of different board games and card games lately. One of them being Ascension: Deckbuilding Game. Before deciding to buy the expensive physical version I took a chance on the Steam digital version and haven't been dissapointed.

This is an early impressions review and I plan to update it as I play more. The game is a fresh of breath air and very different from the current standard in digital card games which are usually some iteration of Slay the Spire and Magic the Gathering. In Ascension you play 2-4 players.

Each player starts with a deck of Militia and Apprentices. Militia are used to gain the Power currency. Apprentices are used to gain the Runes currency. An additional deck will play 6 cards in a "poker river" format which players can use their currency on to defeat monsters with Power and obtain playable cards to add to their deck with Runes. Defeating monsters and obtaining different cards to build your deck allow you to obtain Honor. Each game starts with a fixed amount of Honor you can obtain so you can set a custom game with a pool of 90 heroics. When all these are obtained and the pool is empty the game ends and each player tallies the amount of Honor they obtained. The winner is who obtained the most.

Sounds complicated just reading it but its very simple. The great thing about these digital card games is that it forces you to play by the rules. The game comes with 14 expansions and each expansion adds new elements. The UI allows you to easily add expansions to your current game so I am learning one expansion at a time and playing through all the rules at the moment. I have only played offline vs. AI and it is not too difficult, I've never lost a match and its best treated as a tutorial to the game before diving into online play.

This is a great and classic deck builder. This is a must have if you're a fan of the genre. It comes with almost all of the expansions when you buy it, and has tons of replay-ability.

Chancey Gardener

If not the granddaddy of competitive deckbuilders then certainly one of the first and best. It might not have the most glamorous look and feel by today's standards but it is functional with a great competitive community on Discord (https://discord.gg/T28BqUCr) and Challonge that is supported by both the designers (StoneBlade Entertainment) and avid players of the physical game. In the relatively few cases where digital card implementations do not match the card text a 'bugged' list is maintained.

Timmay

Love the game. The UI is awful though. A few highlights: all sets are just acronyms so you're not sure what you're adding in without having to looks elsewhere and there aren't any recommendations on sets to include together. There is no back button, which is super obnoxious especially when you misclick something and you're stuck with something completely wrong. The turn indicator is incredibly subtle for some reason. When you join a game from an invite and hit accept, you have to go back out from the game page to see actually get the game to start. All in all still a fun game like the tabletop version, just could be much better with some of the obnoxious UI stuff taken care of.

This game is by and far one of my all time favorites. Started playing the physical version almost 10 years ago and fell in love with it. Started playing this version a few years ago and have been able to stop since. My favorite thing to do is break the game with such incredible combos that the game itself crashes (very hard to pull off but oh so fun). I would definitely recommend this game to anyone who enjoys deck building games.

A lot of fun, If you enjoy deckbuilders this is basically just an electronic version of the paper Ascension tabletop game. But if you play against AI and enjoy the end-of-game super-combos, you'll quickly grow infuriated by how long the animations take even on the fastest settings. Really needs a fix.

Where's my nigga Zoro

Very nice adaptation of the card game; however, this game NEEDS

1) Adjustable honor pools for online multiplayer (games with friends end WAY too fast)
2) Better online lobby finding: There's no way to sort for active players, and there's no refresh button for posted games

The game really makes you FEEL like you're in 2011, best played on windows XP, or not at all if you're looking to play online with friends

Best card game ever if you ever want to absolutely break the game go with Realms Unraveled, Dawn of Champions, and Promo Packs 1-6, get Adayu, and Daybreak Asakara, and use DA on Adayu. You'll have 3 Adayu's running at once and you'll be unstoppable. Take out Nova if you can for even more destruction.

It's Ascension. Runs fine, and the fact the game keeps track of all the stuff you ordinarily would in person makes playing any set very easy compared to the tabletop setting, which is mainly helpful when playing with newer sets. I like Ascension, so I like this game. If you don't know anything about it, you can get the mobile app for free and play with the original set, and see if you like it. The 'hard' AI plays a very straight game for the most part, doing what gives them the most honor that turn, which sometimes works but normally just makes for an un-adaptive opponent. As a result, you'll get the most out of this with friends, though even with the AI it's fun to see how hard you can push the mechanics, especially in later sets.

a good version of the physical card game, with less mess. offline, the difficulties tend to make computer players pretty useless, or overly punishing. no really anything in between. card art looks good, music is nice, although it can get repetitive in longer games.

I've played numerous hours of this game and still enjoy playing it each time. Oddly, the AI opponents that I have crafted and named after my friends play just as their real life counterparts do in the physical version of the game (*cough* CHEATERS). Sometimes, the luck of the AI seems to be too good, and there is some lag as the AI slows down to consider optimal plays but it is never too much. I've secured most of the DLC for this game and continue to try new combos of sets. Very happy with Ascension.

Picked this up on sale, never played the tabletop version in the past, but I'm familiar with the genre. The app itself I find simple to use and plays nice. For the most part everything works as you would expect, though there were times I had to drag a card to a specific spot and that wasn't clear. Once I figured that out there was no issue.

For the game itself, it's a fantastic deck builder. Plays more like Star Realms or Hero Realms with the center row and you're building your deck as you play each game. For those that don't know this style of game, it is not like MTG, Hearthstone, or Pokemon where you build your deck outside of a match and bring it in to face another opponent. Both style of game are good, but I personally heavily prefer games like Dominion, Ascension and Legendary.

Base game seems generous including 9 expansions. That's good because I thought the base set alone, while good, was basic. The expansions really help the game become more interesting. I did buy the other 2 paid DLC expansions during the sale after I knew I enjoyed the base game. I only tried Delirium at this point, but I found it to be a lot of fun and interesting. Well worth adding it, especially while a sale is going on.

Games seem to be fairly quick, though at least offline you can increase the points pool if you want a little longer matches. Seems like as you add more expansions my time per match goes up, though that might be because I'm still learning and reading the cards. I've played the Green (easier) AI only so far. For the most part they aren't that tough. I found that I like experimenting with the different cards right now and trying different things just to explore the options the game has. With each game going by fairly quick, it's easy to get a lot of games in and try new things.

I did not play online at this point. I did browse for some games just to see if anything was out there, and it appears there are people playing. I don't know how well it works, but I will likely jump in after I at least try all the expansions. There looks like there is some time mechanic to the games, and it goes quite long - 2 days or so. I think that's so you can essentially play people without needing to be on at the same time.

After dropping 8 hours into the game in the last couple of days, I think I have to give this a thumbs up. Price is good, and I will continue to play this. I've spent $15 in far worse ways.

The UI is trash and needs tool tips, it's 2021. Game plays well once you get past the UI quirks. Needing some weird website's account is pretty stupid. The game should use your steam friends.

Fun deckbuilder which includes a lot of expansions to keep things fresh with each game played. You can play vs the AI or with other players. I haven't had any issues finding people to play with when i've wanted to. Overall, worth the price and if you enjoy deckbuilding games you will enjoy this.

Rivent
Rivent

Solid 2 player deck builder (less so 3-4) with clean mechanics and timeless artwork. Online multiplayer still seems active 2 years in and includes a decade worth of expansions from the physical game. But be warned it can be a little intimidating to get into and that’s not just because the tutorial is glitched. Games are hosted by veteran players with convoluted mixes of expansions selected in which they know the ins and outs whilst you will likely be seeing them for the first time.

I would love to have the ability to Increase the Honor even higher for longer games, even if its only locally. Amazing game otherwise, bought the DLC for more options, and im looking forward to buying the rest of the IRL collection

Guard1an4
Guard1an4

I very much enjoy this game except for one thing that makes me play it a lot less. The honor pool is hard locked to a specified number which feels low. I have played the game in the paper version and me and my friends used to use a huge honor pool which made the game more fun(at least for us). I know that is the amount of honor the that rules say to use but it would be a nice upgrade to this game if you could change it more. For me, this is a deal breaker and while I have played the game many hours I rarely play anymore because of the low honor. I won't purchase anymore DLC for the game until the change is made.

Overall, the game is very good but this one thing holds the game back for me a lot. Without this change, I would only give the game a 5 of 10. If they would change this, I would give it a way better score.

GawnWithTheWind
GawnWithTheWind

I have owned the physical version of this game since Christmas 2015. I've played this game a lot. It's very fun irl and I have a lot of fond memories of it.

That all being said, this is a straight mobile port. The game itself is horribly unbalanced. Unless the deck is being weird, you can very, very easily win by just going Mechana. Mechana cards are also worth more honor than cards of other types (i.e. Cetra Weaver of Stars and Project Alpha, both cost 7 but Cetra in worth 4 honor and PA is worth 7). The expansions help balance this out a little, but if you prefer to play without them then you've either gotta be really good with the other card types or just go mechana.

Online in this game isn't great. You can play with up to four people, which sounds like good fun until you realize that you can't change how much honor you're using. 60 honor is the only way to play online, which is ridiculous. 60 honor leads to short, frustrating games where you have to get lucky within the 10-15 minutes of playtime you'll get. You also can't play with expansions unless everybody invited has the expansions. And on top of that, crossplay between mobile and PC doesn't work despite this version being a mobile port.

Local (offline) matches aren't that bad. You can actually set the honor pool, you can play with four people, you can change your icon so that you don't get confused. Everything seems great until you start playing with Fate cards. They're cards with abilities that happen when they get placed in the center row. Online, they resolve at the start of a player's turn. Offline, it goes player by player, an awkward transition playing the second a player completes what the Fate tells them to.

The game has been getting more support recently because of the anniversary. None of the issues above have been resolved, and most of them have been present since I got the game on mobile back in 2015. If you have a soft spot for this game like I do, buy it on sale. Comes with a good chunk of the expansions and a bunch of booster packs.

Like, app aside, this is the best card game in the world. Ascension is perfection in deck-building. If you don't agree, test drive my brain for a few hours and play it again. (See what I mean?)

My partner and i keep coming back to it every so often, forgetting how fun and addictive it is and then sink way too much time into clobbering each other. And that's the beauty of this game. Each time you start fresh, you might get the deck that's ridiculously over-powered and make your partner cry.

Marsify
Marsify

Honestly, I do love this game. It's perfect for keeping your mind occupied when you just want to blank out and relax.

The reason why I'm not recommending it is because the developer's are frustratingly bull-headed when it comes to one important aspect of the game. Multiplayer *would* be a nice addition to the game, but the amount of "honor" (determines game length, among other things) present in the starting pool is unable to be adjusted! This makes multiplayer games extremely short and unsatisfying. You also cannot adjust honor beyond an arbitrary limit in singleplayer. There is no reason for this.

Time and time again, they have been asked and requested to make this simple change within their game. But they won't budge. I even emailed them myself, only to be ignored completely. I swear to God, all it takes is maybe 20 minutes of programming in order to fix this if you know what you're doing. So why aren't they doing anything?

If the developers would quit being so obstinate about something so easy to fix, I'd happily recommend this game. But until then, stay away, it may just end up frustrating you.

Gankatron

Fun, but fairly random for a deck builder. Basically you'll take what you can get, and for a great measure the game almost plays itself as the options are obvious.

It is a fun time passer, but not the top of the pack of deck builders.

Game is alot of fun! I first played it non digital in its base, and it was great! This is even better because you get all the expansions of way cheaper than what you would pay to have them IRL, but theres no set-up or clean up needed! The only negative thing isnt even with the game itself, it's just the playerbase is very minimal so unless you have friends good look getting a 3+ player game going.

Ryne The Ripper

This game is great, however it's so maddening that you can't make the honor pool higher online/ and offline. It takes away so much and it's a consistent frustration among my friends and I who also play in person when we can. Otherwise it is truly a fantastic game and kudos on the AI.

Many many people online agree; please remove the honor pool caps in this game.

Restricting the ability to increase the honour pool for online games is a horrible oversight. I fear its intentional to force players to play quicker games, get bored faster, and purchase expansions quicker. The community has reached out endlessly to voice their concern over this restriction, and nothing has been done to improve their experience. Brutal.

With the two expansions, there is a huge amount of content (about 1700 cards i think). Game plays well and is fairly easy to pick up but has a great deal of depth to it. Players have been asking for a way to increase honor points and make games last longer for years. Devs continue to ignore this, and when players take it into their own hands to modify the game to fix it, devs shut attempts down without saying anything.

Please read the full review. I am not recommending it due to multiplayer "issues". They are features that should have been implemented a long time ago.

Basically, multiplayer games are incredibly short games that end before you ever really feel like you're doing anything. This game is an engine-building game, and yet you are barely able to construct anything before the game ends.

Ascension: Deckbuilding game is a decent game and wonderful to play with friends. I even own most of the game and expansions in paper, and have been playing it long before there was a digital version. However, the paper version allows you to set your own game length by increasing or decreasing the amount of "Victory Points" (or Honor) at the start of a game.

This online version of Ascension does not let you do that. It leaves you unsatisfied with how games end because they are so quick.

This review would be an instant 9.5/10 if it weren't for this glaring issue that's been present since 2014 in this video game.

Because this issue exists, I would rate it 4/10.

Transcendencius
Transcendencius

The hard honor cap makes this version of the game worthless.

With the maximum amount of honor that is enforced as available, it feels like the game ends when it's just starting to get going. An extremely puzzling decision by the developers.

*Disclaimer - I own many physical copies of Ascension and its expansions. I like the game quite a bit*

The game is fun and it's functional. You can play online or solo. The facts it comes with so many expansions is pretty fricking sweet.

Why the no vote? You can't raise the honor cap per player. Per the rules, it's only 30 honor in the pool per person. You start getting into the groove of things and then boom, the game is over. Giving us a flexible honor cap would make this a perfect digital rendition of a snazzy deckbuilder. The devs don't seem too keen, but I think they should reconsider their stance for the sake of fun.

(Keep in mind I went into this never playing a card game like it, or the tabletop version for that matter). Interesting concept for a game. Super confused going into it, but once I learned how everything worked through the tutorial I thought I knew everything. Then the game ended, got super confused how I had so many stars; then I realized that there's a tiny little marker for the cards you obtain throughout the game, counted them up and found myself learning how the points work. I look forward to testing out more card combinations I can get, very interesting. Definitely recommend giving it a try.

Fantastic game! I love the board game, and this is one of the few where I'd be willing to play the digital version consistently. The gameplay is super fun, and varies everytime. You get to do something new every game. It's a deckbuilder which is one of my favorite genres, and it combines it with basically an open table draft mechanic. I'm going to be the weird one who says that the honor point pool is perfectly fine. Sure, it'd be nice to have it uncapped for when you want to play a 2-4 hour, all expansions game with friends, but the way it is now feels perfectly balanced for how quickly the game should go. If it were any higher the games would simply take too long. As it stands the game has a perfect curve from ramp up to combo/apply pressure to go-in-for-the-kill. The game is a perfect slice of quick, yet strategic deckbuilding. It's more fun to play 2-3 interesting and challenging games then get stuck in one single, never ending game where you got high rolled on the first three turns. Game is perfect the way it is.

It is a decently fun deckbuilder, but suffers from many of the common pitfalls of the genre. I play exclusively against bots to waste some time, and that can be fun, but the unbalanced card levels makes it a massive pain to play against other humans. Probably best to avoid playing it with people you like, for the same reasons I would avoid playing Monopoly or Risk with people I liked. Oh, and there is a fairly serious memory leak problem that will slow the client to a crawl once a certain threshold of cards played has been reached. But, I still come back every so often just to kill time, and for that, Ascension does pretty well.

Not a deck _building_ game but rather deck _milling_ game.
Luck based - when you play against 3 opponents.
Little to none strategy involved - you just need to pick up everything affordable to you and mill your deck as quickly as possible.
Too many things are going on when you play with all available extensions.
AI is choking when it gets an OP card / combo.

It's a deck building game, not a pay to win 1v1 blizzard garbage game.
I love the art style simplistic as it is.
Probably one of the very feew.. games where I actually had fun.
If you like card games, please buy it or just play it somehow.

I feel like the computer cheats, and sometimes the game "lags" (A.I. turns can take a minute for some reason).
I love this game, and own the many of the physical versions as well.
Absolutely recommend getting the entire game and DLC on the next sale.

I was not sure if I'd like this or not... the thing that held me back was the nagging concern that the different DLC packs would not work well together. For me the more variety the better.... Well, I needn't have worried. For me they work wonderfully together and make for more fun and variety than I would have though possible. So good on ya, Ascension, and I'm really glad I bought your game.

I love this kind of game, and this game had everything to have me playing over 100h of it, but the lack of a community really hurts this game.

Let me explain: The game has over 10 expansions in the base game, no explanation what each does and the game REALLY doesn't work very well with all of them active. I tried looking for them on the internet and could find very little information and no one is really willing to help you understand anything.

So, you have to figure everything by yourself and honestly, I not really interested in this game enough to mix and match over 10 expansions to find that sweet spot. Believe me, it is not worth it. If you want a card game, there are many better options.

It's the OG deckbuilder and it's still great fun

The idea is good, the execution totally flawed. The developers are idiots, honor doesn't go past 60 for online games, AI can't be added, and they have actively stopped every single attempt to change the honor pool, for there own selfish reasons.

Quite fun deckbuilder game and most of the expansions are already bundled with the base game.
