it's great so far.
For the people complaining about the length of early access.... don't buy early access. It's just act 1. this wasn't hidden, it was very well and clearly stated. Quit your crying.
This Game is AMAZING!! If you love DnD or Medieval Fantasy in general this is the game for YOU, being a Click-To-Move, Turn Based Fighting gaming I had my doubts as I usually don't play the sorts, but in my first session I hit 10 hours, and then the other 17 hours in 2 sessions afterward! I CANNOT get enough, being only in ALPHA and this good.. worth the money.
Honestly one of the best RPGs to come out in decades. The amount of time and effort put into each one of the story lines and the multitude of races and classes is amazing. I've played the early access through about 2 dozen times, and I find something new every single time.
About the only negative I can even mention is that they haven't released the full game yet. But I get why. I hope BG3 releases soon, and we get riddled with immersive expansions.
They released part of the game 2 years ago aaaaaaaaaand we're still waiting for the full game to come out. Don't support this company. Don't buy their half-finished game
Still in Early Access, and for good reason, but definitely plenty to do, and you can tell the Devs plan on adding even more before a full release.
This game has been in development hell for over 2 years, with no planned release date. You only get to play a small part of act one. Your max level is 4. Lets be real, they are charging full price for a demo at this point.
Will revisit this review if the game actually releases, which i now have doubts that will ever happen.
I'm not far into the game, but it is already sucking me in. I built a PC to be able to play games like this and Divinity without squinting across a living room. Good stuff :D
I love the character creation, the open world, the various interactions you can have with npc's. I love the customization control you have over your character and your party. I wish there were more cool weapons and armor to happen across or gain but I also know this is the open beta. I cannot wait as I have been playing the open beta for 2 years now! Hopefully we will see each other soon full Baldur's Fate 3 game. Soooooon.
Excellent RPG. Much different in battle mechanics compared to the dark alliance series I played as a child, but the story really struts its stuff in this game.
Companies should be punished for releasing as "Early Access" titles, then slow bleeding out patches. Just another "could be great game" using predatory tactics for crowd sourcing funds. Save your money and hope in 2050 when this releases that the community aka Quality Assurance team (paid beta testing) worked out.
One of the best games ive played in all my years of living. highly recommend if you love amazing stories and great combat
Anyone who writes a negative review about this game because its still in early access didn't read a single thing from Larian when the game released. Larian were exceptionally transparent that early access wouldn't have pre-orders or any extra payments, simply because it would be a testing grounds for updates, QoL changes and fixes to the game while they completed what remained. This has been open information since day one.
In its current state, there is easily 40-60 hours of great writing, voice acting and gameplay that has been improved time and time again over the Early Access period as we inch closer to release. And that's only if you play one class, one race, once through the chapter.
Been playing this off and on from when it first released. OMFG have they improved this a million fold. It feels like i'm playing a Tabletop DnD campaign (all be it the same one over and over). I have my character sheet, my inventory everything.
If they keep up the improvements and add a campaign editor, i might not go back to the tabletop. >.>
BG3 has all the makings of absolutely stunning RPG and degfinitely one of the best and genre defining in long years.
Still, despite all of the good points, it's still an Early Access meaning you only have a part of the game available, and who knows when it finally releases (postponed a couple of times).
What is even more worrying is the fact that the game is completely unstable. Lags, errors breaking saves, long and frequent freezes and so on. It could be the best game there is but if it's a pain to plain it won't be a good game. Based on the troubles affecting the game I cannot sincerely recommend it.
Will review upon release.
Old school game play with better graphics then the earlier Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale Games. Haven't gotten far but so far I like it.
As an early access game I can give this high marks on a few areas, but it drops the ball on other aspects.
The things Baldur's Gate 3 succeeds in is wealth of content, game play, and graphics. These are three very strong aspects of the game that help make it feel more alive and vibrant and being a part of the world.
Unfortunately, there are things it fails at such as stability, lack of content (wow weird), and the cost of the game up front in early access. Even with all the shortcomings, Baldur's Gate 3 when it releases will likely be worth every penny. I plan to gift a copy of this game to a friend as this is a studio that delivers products that just can't be beat. I'm referencing Larian Studios other hit title, Divinity Original Sin 2.
TL;DR I recommend this game, it is pretty good and will be even better when it comes to full release.
Even in early access a game that pulls you in. The story works, there's always something different in the releases, keeping even the early access patches interesting. Does not follow the 5e ruleset too strictly, haven't decided yet if that's a good or a bad thing. Experience with DnD 5e gives you an understanding on how to improve your chances of survival and you will get into the game sooner. All in all, I do not regret the early access buy. I played some when I got it but the latest patch made it better with the AI movement of enemies in large battles. Speeds everything up.
This is a better, cleaner version of Divinity 2 (Which I have also played SEVERAL times through). The graphics and story line seem better and I like the combat style. Much more expansive character customization and in depth relationships with other members of your party. If you like Divinity, this is a must have.
This is a great game. It's early access, so it isn't perfect, there are occasional bugs, graphical errors, awkward animations, and missing dialogue/animations. But it's still a very charming game, great mechanics, great combat encounters, intrigue, lots of unique dialogue options based on who you are as well as what spells/items you have, the list goes on. I've played all of what is available in early access, and have sunk hours and hours into this game. Highly recommend.
Worth every penny, hope to see more races, classes and subclass as well as the ability to role for your stats but still amazing.
guys really its been 2 years the game is still heavily buggy and not much content has been added after a long team really dissapointing
Quit wasting time and money on a talk show about your game developement and just finish it. Maybe youd have an actual release date planned instead of pushing it off for 2 years. Glad to know the reason you missed your orginal date is some hotfixes for a demo and two new classes. Perhaps give us a bit more then some scraps of an intro to a story and level 4? Waste of money until full release if they ever get around to finishing it instead of keeping the demo up to date.
This game has been in Early Access since 2020, not due to release until 2023(currently). Shit, D&D is moving onto a new edition in 2024. This game will barely be done before it is out of sync with where D&D is. Promising start, but snails pace completion. TOO SLOW
Two freaking years in Early Access. If you guys can remember it right, the game was released in October 2020 and was supposed to be a full release by the end of 2021. Although they never provided a Roadmap (they knew it would be a crapstorm if they did), there were 'promises' of opening additional chapters throughout the year. Then the game was pushed back to "early 2022". Then we got stuck in chapter 1 and level 4 cap for the rest of the EA. Then, when they realized the size of the mess they were into, they pushed it back again, promising "sometime 2023".
And yet, the legion of fans still clap and act as if nothing is wrong.
As of now, I don't care if the game comes out as a masterpiece next year. I paid full price for an Early Access AAA game two years ago because I was dumb enough to believe Swen Vinke's promises. If he said back then "Guys, we still need about three years of development" would you still buy the game in EA? This is scummy at best.
Back then Larian still had some integrity to me due to their other great games. Now they are in the same trash bin of EA, Bethesda and Blizzard. Shame...
Thought I was supporting my favorite game franchise by buying this early. Instead discovered pretty quickly I was supporting vaporware. If the game ever gets released, I'll rate this based on it's merits. For now, all I can do is rate it based on it not existing. Stop adding classes and pissweight updates, and get the rest of the game done. Then add that stuff. Elsewhere I'm seeing 4 person teams release stuff of this quality on a proper timetable. If I could refund this, I would.
Its not that wouldn't recommend the game, its a great game with an interesting story line. As an avid Table Top RPG player and D&D fan particular i'm excited to see D&D's return to a digital platform. What I can't stand this that this was a Triple A title with years of development and its released as an unfinished game 2 years ago as an early release and they still aren't sure when the game is actualy going be completed, the last answer from the lead Developer put the game at least a year from being finished and that was some time in the Spring of this year (2022), which means that game won't be completed at the earliest until some time in 2023, but it's looking more and more likely based on the rate of patch releases and updates that its more then likely going to be 2024 before we see the completed game. As a Triple A title almost 4 years in pre-release, is insane, i'm looking forward to the full release of the game, whenever that is, but i'm losing any hope that its ever actually going to happen which is sad: especially given that Wizards of the Coast spent years turning down other studio's that they didn't think could get the game right and its looking more and more like they should have waited longer because its starting to look like Larian Studios has bitten off more then they could handle. I TRULY HOPE THAT I AM PROVEN WRONG BECAUSE THE GAME AS SOME MUCH POTENTIAL
This game is frustratingly buggy right now. Frequent crashes, there are side quests that can't be completed, and there's a nasty bug that prevents you from picking up loot.
There a really great game underneath all the bugs, but they make the experience too painful to justify paying for it now right now.
excited to see how this develops. game is a lot of fun.
I am loving the way the game plays. The story lines are real good. And the graphics are awesome. Still several bugs going on though obviously. And I have played for just over 31 hours and have completed almost all the available areas that I can go. Hoping some more areas will be added soon.
I fucking love this and it's only growing!
I played Baldurs gate 1 and 2, so here I am again :-)
It's a buggy, choppy, unoptimized mess. Half the times it does not start, the others it bugs out or crashes mid session. It's been out in early access for 2 years soon, but this is still the case. Don't buy until actual release, and judging by previous Larian releases, not for a couple months after that either.
I tried the game after some time not playing (I purchased on release n played like 6 hours at the time) and I will admit that it's a cool lil game but it's such a mess to play. I understand it's in pre-release and still being worked on but it's a nuisance 99% of the time to play in some way or another. The game glitches out constantly, either permanently freezing my character from walking so that I gotta reload my last save, putting me in combat at random with friendly npcs, or crashing when I try to load from one place to another and other bs. Not to mention the neat issue where sometimes when you reload it seems to change how much the game can handle, going from 60fps to 8 is really fun. The combat is cool, I don't know much about dnd but the mechanics are straightforward enough always annoying when you miss 5 attacks in a row at 64% lol. Dialogue usually doesn't keep up with the animations of most models and most times the models also bug out, snapping necks and limbs in nasty ways, other times characters will just sit still and won't speak for multiple lines of dialogue. I wanna enjoy this game like I did DoS2, so I'll wait till full release to hope it's perfected. See y'all in 2094.
Game is amazing, even in pre-alpha, I'd recommend to my grandma, but shes dead. RIP
I'm really enjoying this game. I can't wait for the complete game to come out.
I love you Larian, I would climb into Heaven and kill God if you asked
In the immortal words of Bobby B, "Start the damn joust before I piss me self!"
love the cinematics and choices. Great rpg. Very promising! Can't wait for the full release!
Very good D&D play. good use of skills is required to live. Not just a bash them game
For an early access game, it has a plethora of content to play through. Larian keeps adding classes and races so the builds are endless and it really feel like you're just playing a digital version of 5E D&D. Love it, highly recommend it. oh and also you can play with friends so yeah, buy it.
Overall I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with this game so far.
Pros:
Story- the intro and story so far are interesting and hint and really odd outcomes if you make weird choices. I don't know if that's possible- but has kept my interest. Lots of choices and they appear to matter on the stories direction quite a bit. Enemies could be friends; could you have mind flayers take over the world- doubtful but endearing. Tried some odd ally choices and it was a mixed bag as you'd expect- but only tried a couple short play throughs.
Difficulty- to me this finds the sweet spot on encounter design. You have to think tactically and have some tricks up your sleeve in some battles (potions, scrolls, etc..) Hard mobs that if you rush in will likely kill you. Stealth, pre-battle exploration, dialogue help immensely.
There are lots of little hidden things around; some important- some not. The game is hard-ish, but not impenetrable.
Graphics- graphics and sound are excellent. Battle music kicks on in certain hard areas- although sometimes when you have avoided battle in that area. All around enjoyed the immersion of graphics, music, and terrain.
User Interface- it's busy, but deep and useful if you take the time to figure it out.
Little things-
-BREAKABLE DOORS AND CHESTS!!! This can end you up in areas you have no idea what's going on- it's fun!
-Randomized loot in dungeons!
-Easter eggs all about- hope this keeps up into the later game :D
Neutral:
-Loot, I feel I explored early areas really well and first couple vendors I met at around level 3 I did not have enough to purchase one piece of +1 armor there... Had like 1100gp after selling everything I wished to part with- costs 1500..
-Camp was functional, but not sure about using it push the story line- it's part of D&D, but not my cup of tea.. Seems to be a for sure part of the game.
Cons:
-Pretty unstable, had lots of crashes. Broken cut scenes and dialogue that got me stuck. Save often.. Autosave won't save you 15 mins of repeating stuff..
-Mini map is lacking. Counter intuitive, zoom is lacking. I have still not been able to get used to the weird direction and orientation of the map- you should be able to click it to go somewhere.
Difficulty checks- a lot of these seemed pretty ridiculous, with all bonuses just don't roll a 1. Some more advantageous ones where correctly difficult at DC 15 or 20 for low level.
Excellent design so far, if this keeps up and bugs are ironed out- should/could easily be RPG/Game of the decade. Hoping for full release next year!
50 hours in the character creator alone
One of the best D&D based video games I've seen. Great for if you want to just put your toes into the water of forgotten realms. Especially the ability to basically write your own store and know that you are one of few people who will ever have the same exact experience as you. The game play to other games is quite unique with the on and off turn based system which I greatly enjoy. I will say i have not played any of the other Baldur's gate games but this game even as is stand alone has been fantastic!
Player agency, is very well done for this ER, can't wait for the full game.
If you like D&D, then yes in so many ways.
D&D when you want it, and better written than most DMs can pull off
very fun game i played divinity original sin 2 and that was also a blast. very close to D&D 5e so if you like that you will pretty mush enjoy this
A few bug here and there but steady updates. Also its Larian and I trust them. Recommend 10/10
Feels pretty good to play, i know i could get invested in this 100%. I have played around 5 hours, it is a solid game. I think fans of classic RPG styles like the original BG games would find this entertaining, but also it has some Dragon Age vibes, in the character relation aspect, where you talk to your companions and during certain parts of your adventure they will converse with you. This adds a sense of realism to the NPC's and i quite like this aspect. Give it a go, I'm sure you will find something to like here.
Even though i like Larian they're taking way too much time to release the game.
At the rate they're going i will be on pension when they release it.
Very fun, even in beta. Faithful implementation of 5e with just enough adaptions to make it work best as a video game. The plot is fun and interesting. Very enjoyable.
Great graphics, game play, and story
played as far into the story as it will let me, so far well written and engaging.
Absolutely amazing! I can't wait for the full release in 2023!
I'm having a lot of fun playing this. I have been in to pathfinder video games until I discovered Solasta a few months ago, and this game feels like Solasta but with a 100x more engaging story. The gameplay is good, but I am still discovering things. The story and voice acting is very good. I really enjoy the aspects brought back from DOS2, such as using the environment as a tool, and having so many options to resolve quests/story points. I really enjoy the implementation of the dice roll system. Being able to add the spell/cantrip bonuses on the fly is amazing for QoL!
There are some weird bugs I've noticed every now again, and I seem to have issues with the game loading every so often. I can guess these things can be expected due to EA. The inventory system, despite being a bit of a slog, still has some things going for it. I really appreciate the option for a custom inventory tab. A multi-select option would be great though.
I have only played less than 30 hours at this point, so I don't have a lot of experience with the whole first act yet (I'm a chronic re-starter). So far I like what I've seen overall.
Im going to shit in my own pants dont buy this game
Love this game so much. A lot of early access content. Really looking forward to full release! When??? Give me a date???
Stellar experience. Modding. Fun gameplay. Promised content always coming and pushing beyond expectations. Negative reviews are redditors on povertyboxes or impatient people. WAAAH MY EARLY EARLY EARLY EARLY ACCESS GAME CRASHED OR GOT A SOFTLOCK WAAAAAH
>product in testing has bugs
color my surprise
Game is super fun, works great. Sure there are crashes, sure there are bugs, big whoop. Awesome with friends.
Such a great game even in early access! I love the character customisation options and all the great dialogue and gameplay. Still some glitches to sort out (particularly in multiplayer lobbies which I get isn't the priority of this game lol) but Larian are being so responsive and listening to their playerbase that this is going to be awesome and full release couldn't come soon enough.
Can't wait for full release in 2023! :)
My hope is furthermore that there will be a "map editor" or similar some time after release to create adventures on your own.
To all the negative reviewers who whine about "Still just level 4 and act 1 after two years development?" and "this game will not be released in my lifetime":
Please read AT LEAST the %&$/% Early Access Notes from the developers that are right there on the store page, so I do not have to read these BS reviews with no real argument again. Thank you!
atm its very limited content for paying a full game price. can only do the one map, only lvl to 4...and most of the combats are overly difficult with only a 4 member party. also, why does it seem we are unable to do any form of crafting our own gear? that's a huuuuuge and very important missing part.
Is that splash art a Jethro Tull reference?
please just release it already aaaaaaaa
While not done, the game is very fun, if at times unforgving. It is like playing DnD, and while the characters can be difficult to get on with, its worth a buy when it comes out.
Way old school DND veteran ... hello old friend ... the closest I have come to a most feels from a CRPG to resemble actual DND!
More games should let me make Tieflings kiss.
This is perhaps the only game in the past few years where I've paid full price when it was first released. I regretted that impulse within days after making the purchase. I had far greater expectations than what was delivered. Because of that purchase at full price I vowed never to buy a full-price early release again.
That hasn't changed. What has changed is that I was in between games and went back to it. The difference was light years better and I've been very pleasantly surprised by the advancements made. Having previously trashed my expectations, they now reaffirmed them. I'm happy with what they've done to improve the game and will re-consider the franchise the next time they have a produce release.
The game delilvers on everything now, from music and storyline to voice talent and great grahics. I thoroughly recommend this game.
Games not done but i like where the game is going so far, my laptop isnt happy with this game however with constant crashes and glitches with the new updates, its early acess so im hopping it will be fixed when the game is done.
The story is great so far and looking forward for the rest of it.
I always wanted to play D&D however i didn't have friends excited for the idea. I am enjoying the game with the 5e rules. As unpopular opinion, wish i could roll the die on attack rolls as well, that would feel even better at least for me.
You can not only pet the Dog. You can play ball and talk with the dog.
Also The dog will follow you into your camp and if you hurt the dog by accident, Lea'ziel will woop your ass.
10/10
Hurt the dog for emotional damage
wonderful game. fun. combat is challenging.
Take special note: "Player levels are currently capped at 4." This means you will run out of levels to gain long before you tun out of content. Until we get at least level 5 some fights just become impossible. Don't bother playing until the level cap is made higher.
Finished Baldurs Gate 1 & 2 but can already tell this is going to be the greatest addition to the series
EDIT: IM OVER MY LOST SAVES. HAVING THE BEST TIME EVER PLAYING. THIS GAME WILL BE EPIC
i did what it says to do. i cant load my patch 7 saves. my head is about to fucken explode. someone help for the love of god please help!! was the best game ever until now.
now this is next gen and extremely better than mass effect and cyberpunk. even in early access it has a lot to offer, choices and romance. Please dev, take your time
Best CRPG since Destiny 2 , Larian are killing it ( can't wait for the full game)
This game shows more promise than I expected. I'm glad I bought the early access to learn as much as I can before the full game launches because everything this studio touches turns to gold. Combat is fun and engaging, and although has some ability to be cheesed, enables a wide variety of tools get the job you want done.
Let me be the first person to tell you, I'm not smart. So strategy games usually don't hold my attention because i suck so much at them. This game however makes me strive to keep playing for one reason, and its the same reason I sunk over 300 hours into divinity original sin 2... The characters. The stories told in these games are too good to pass up. The characters, and personality that goes into them far exceed 95% of other story driven games on the market. You'll fall in love with the characters you meet, laugh at their jokes, bitterly despise some, and miss those who leave all because of one reason: Larian studios knows how to write. It is a mark of intelligence and a love for one's craft with what this studio has done for this game, and I can't wait to finish their story.
That being said, there are some bugs and issues that aren't too game breaking. The combat can be cheesy as I said earlier, and some classes are easily more powerful than their counterparts, so balance is something these guys are going to have to hone in on the most to make this game a masterpiece. However, this game isn't PVP so the balance issue is admissible so long as you're playing who you want to role-play as, and don't care for min-maxing.
Overall this game is worth the money I spent for it. And I look forward to continue promoting and supporting this studio so long as they keep making content such as this. Truly diamonds in the rough.
Amazing, even in EA the game has already improved immensely, and with so much content in ACT 1 alone, I've gotten my worth out of the purchase many times over. Larian keeps on giving and I can't wait for the full release.
good game BUT IT NEEDS A NECROMANCER 100% NO CAP
This is how you replace a Skyrim addiction!! 10/10 cant wait to see this thing fully released
new stuff and changes come quick enough to be interesting. Lots to explore and extensive player control. long battles but entertaining.
Game give big PP, ( Don't have PP anymore but if did would be big for this game ) !
This is so much fun and a great intro to D&D. I loved getting to customize my character and being able to play with my husband and his character as well.
been in early access for two years , and still not done? At this rate the next edition for dungeons and dragons will be out
Even in EA this is currently the best DnD game in existance. I have been waiting for something to rival NWN and DoS2 and this is IT!! Can't wait for this to hit full release...but until then, I will keep playing Act I until I memorize the whole damn thing.
Great voice acting and player choice!
Loved the idea of the game. Impossibly bored by the race lineup. Almost half of the lineup is just a grab bag of elves, and the rest make the line up look like a list of Star Trek aliens. Basically humans with some boring differences. Was hoping to at least get dragonborn. Nope.
Quite fun. I'm in love with the animations and the high quality of both the world and the characters. It feels reminiscent of Neverwinter Nights 2 mixed with a bit of Divinity Original Sin 2. To be frank, I'm happy that Larian was given the chance to make this game. They always put such love and detail into their games and really pay attention to both the lore and the way that DnD 5e functions.
Here are my list of pros
-The dice rolling system with the added bonuses of inspiration and various buffs from your companions really makes it feel unique and invested. A poor roll could end tragically and a good one could benefit you greatly depending on your luck and attributes. Just like in DnD, a roll can make or break something but its the risk you take.
-The character models are beautiful and I love the attention to detail especially in the character creation portion. Im sure before full release there will be more options added but there are a lot already and you are able to make a character that uniquely fits you and your play style.
-The companions are all very unique both in how they look, they personalities as well as their backgrounds. At first, I was very much put off by Astarian being that he reminded me of every typical elf in the world however, the added burden of being a vampire was an interesting twist and his chaotic personality was a big relief as opposed to the typical, stick up the butt elf we usually have to deal with. Shadowheart is sweet yet cold and her secret is actually a really unique way to add to the story as well. Gale is your typical wizard but I like his swagger and knowledge of the arcane. Lae'zel is a hard, down to business cutthroat Gith. She wishes so badly to prove herself to her people and her queen but I believe shes not as ruthless as her fellow Gith which would allow for deeper character development. I havent had much of a chance to play with Wyll being that I generally stick with my main four of Astarian, Lae'zel, Shadowheart and myself. But his story seems interesting and I really like his personality and design as well.
-The map is fun so far and I like that there are many different paths to choose regarding how to deal with the tadpole as well as who you would rather help and how. Being a Drow has also had its advantages so far, especially regarding the goblins. I liked that that was something considered by the devs.
-Gameplay is overall quite fun if not a bit challenging at times. I like the rolls for initiative and the fall or passing of saving throws. It feels similar to the way Divinity played while holding onto the similar qualities of other turn based RPGS.
Cons:
I know the game is still in early access and despite these minor issues, it is still very playable and a fun intro into the world of BG3.
-The panning around the map system is irritating. Many times I have gotten stuck at a particular angle and couldnt see a damn thing and sometimes the camera would clip into areas outside of the world where Im just left starting at blue sky below my character. It was frustrating. I hope this is something they really fix come final release.
-Cinematics are still unfinished
- It sometimes takes a long time for textures to load or for characters to properly spawn in
- The inventory system. Its really bad and annoying that you cant select multiple things to discard at once. I spent a lot of time just clearing crap out as often as possible and having to select every single thing one by one drove me mad.
-Game crashes here and there
-Weapon/armor/cooking would be nice to have
Overall, the game is fun and I'm looking forward to the full release. :)
As an older gamer I am a huge fan of the original BG series and also a fan of Larian, Obsidian and Owl Cat Games. Personally I have typically enjoyed Obsidian games the most, just always felt more like BG to me. When I heard Larian had gotten the green light to do BG3 I was happy but would have preferred Obsidian since to me, they are more like BG in my opinion.
With that said I always knew I was going to buy this game and always felt that Larian would do a really good job, just felt that Obsidian was a better fit. After playing 10 hours of the early release I am proud to say I was right and wrong.
First Larian is doing an outstanding job and I no longer believe Obsidian was the best fit for this game.
Wizards of the Coast needed this game to be a hit in my opinion. To me they picked the company with the most proven recent track record and the one that pushes the envelope. Obsidian has made good games, with good stories that feel like BG. The way it boils down, Obsidian would have made the best BG game, would have felt like a BG game, looked like a BG game and would have, at the very worst done the series justice.
Larian is making the best game, that could redefine what a great Top Down RPG is. They are not trying to jump over the bar, they are trying to raise it to astronomical heights.
I now have zero doubts they are the best company for this project and cannot wait to see the full release.
Kudos to Larian on what they have completed so far and I cannot wait to see what Obsidian and Owl Cat come up with next.
I will go straight to the point.
When it comes to customisation of characters, voice acting, music, graphics and story telling (at least for now what I have seen from early access) Baldur's Gate 3 does it great.
When it comes to actual D&D combat and rules, classes, skills, spells, characters party control (Why do I have to out of combat click jump for every party member separately when they could do that automatically?), good UI or in general actual D&D game-play this game is not so good.
There is game called Solasta: Crown of the Magister that does that 100% better when it comes to following D&D rules, combat, classes, skills, spells, good characters party control and UI (simple and to the point).
I like Larian studio and I like Divine Divinity games (old ones and new ones) but I also like D&D and Forgotten Realms so I hope they can do better with implementing D&D rules in to this game.
Sorry but personally I will give it thumbs down for now.
Already a pretty great multiplayer experience, assuming one doesn't mind using Larian's official Discord server to communicate and find groups. Without some 3rd party program, there is no in-game communication of any sort yet.
There's a good selection of classes, a good selection of races, and I'd say overall there's about 40-50 hours of content if you take your time and watch cut scene's. That's pretty good for an early access version of the game. If you murderhobo with a few friends, it can go anywhere from 6-10 hours depending on how well you know the game. Few random groups will do 'everything' in one sitting.
That said, you will probably have game bugs on occasion and it isn't very optimized at the moment which is mostly expected of an EA title.
If you think about this as a playable demo that you get for free along with a pre-order, I think you won't be disappointed if you're a fan of D&D and Larian's other games such as Divinity Original Sin 2. I loved DOS2, and I like D&D, and this game is delivering on exactly what I was hoping it would be.
Firstly, I'd like to say that I still definitely have problems with this game. Loading times are frustrating, loading into areas takes up to a whole minute, and there's still a lot of visual weirdness. This game isn't complete, (obviously) so keep that in mind when buying. I do think that considering this game is in early access, the price is pretty high.
But that's my criticism; Overall, I love this game. It is the DnD video game we've all wanted. I love the game's mechanics, graphics are great (if not occasionally a little rough), and the CHARACTERS. I love interacting with each character, and they all feel like they have real depth and personality. Honestly, I'd buy this game just for the character interactions. We still have a long way to go, and I'm anxious to see where we go from here.
Finished the test play through, so now Larian Studios got me begging for more.
The game is great and all, I didn't regret buying it.
But I hate that if you play a Githyanki, the game forces you to worship Vlaakith and have lines that basically conform to Githyanki's society.
You can't play as an outcast Githyanki that is disappointed with their people's culture. Sure you can, but lines he says directly contradict this and limits the roleplaying aspect.
Try it yourself, play as Githyanki Cleric of Tyr, and they will sing praise of Vlaakith and thanks her and talk about not ever disappoint her. "Vlaakith test me" they say whenever bad things happen.
All I want is to play as a Githyanki Wizard who has travelled the world and have an open mind and compassion yet still face the same racism and persecution from people who misjudge his character by his race, is that so hard to ask?
Also where is Half-Orc?
Game is still in flux, but I trust the developers and the original ethos of the game to come true
Way too many bugs to enjoy it as for now. Wait until it's out of early access.
game still crashes alot, but it is super invested and things are getting fixed realy fast so good for you bug hunters and bug extermenators :-P great job im having fun TYVM!
getting close to two full years of early access. Honestly I'm sure the full game will be amazing, but this early access period is way too damned long.
Great game but it came out 'early access' 2 years ago and only Act 1 is available?
Really? Another 3 years for Act 2 maybe? They SAY it will be released next year but I'm shelving it now because I can't go any further. Awesome game but woefully incomplete.
For what it has right now its enough content for hours of gameplay and fun. Multiply that fun by 4 if you have a group. A.I pathing is rough tho when it comes to traps and they will just walk into them sometimes.
Very promising so far. There's a lot of work to be done but I know Larian won't let us down. I hope they continue to take their time with this game instead of rushing it like every other studio these days.
However I will riot if we don't get a panther animal companion. My ranger needs his kitty cat!!
Even in its unfinished state, this game is pretty awesome.
You must bear in mind that this is a 'work in progress'. Some things glitch, albeit briefly; not everything is there. But the graphics are stunning, the character creation seems to be on the right track (still no half-orc or paladin yet), but what is there is beautiful and works pretty well.
I particularly like the visuals of examining things and rolling dice, just feels 'right'. Obviously a labor of love by the people creating it, almost like the old days where developers would roll out 'here's what we have, help us make it better'. I do not care how long it takes for them to finish it, even with various races and classes not there yet, what we have is playable with lots of options for customization and interaction. The menus are pretty clear and the options for interaction with objects are clear and (for me) intuitive.
Very nice. It's not quite done, but no one is saying it is (awaiting ability to build my half-orc paladin, cough cough) What's there is already worth the coin in my opinion.
I'm not one to leave reviews but this is a premium gaming experience!
sooooo good for a chill playthrough with friends or just a bunch of different character builds running a solo game.
I love Balder Gate 3, It could be one of the best rpg games of all times.
game isn't fully released yet, but what IS out is awesome. Recommend!!!!
I cant help but recommend the game currently, Though i suggest one waits if they are iffy on early access games. On an overall the game is great with mostly consistent update over the past almost 2 years. Every update i return to see the new and shiny fixes with other bugs and missing this fixed. In true fashion to Larian Studios the game keeps pulling you back to see a new little bit that was missed before, though this is incomplete the first act feels well fleshed and introduces the player to the realms they will see well along with a good combat style that allows for good tactics while providing a mostly D&D experience.
Give it a try if you dont mind it being a Early Access Title, if you do mind, wishlist it and keep an eye out for full release :)
One day this game will be finished and it will be glorious.
you like divinity? its like that. but better
I'm loving this game so much so far, there are a few bugs like character standing on air, lighting being weird in cut scenes and the one that pisses me off the most is the damn camera, whether in cut scenes, mid battle or just walking around sometimes it zooms in so much and gets stuck on the floor or something and i'm not even zooming in it just does it for some reason. The animation can get weird sometimes too. But overall still so much fun.
Yet another shameless cash grab marketed on nostalgia. Prime example of why not to buy anything in early access. Coming up on 2 years since EA release with no meaningful updates, very limited content, and gamebreaking bugs that have existed since day 1. Don't waste your money on a game that's not even half developed.
So far so good for early access. Definitely very throwbackish in terms of character control. Feels very much like playing D&D. Lots of dialogue and interaction that makes the game feel alive.
I hope this is not a game where I am dying through half of it (or all of it like Cyberpunk and Dead Red) but we'll have to wait for the finished product to see.
This game no longer loads any saves. It just locks up and I cannot play.
It's not very optimised and stutters when I walk a single metre but the game is very enjoyable when it doesn't lag.
Very fun and developed, can't wait for the launch. 10/10 would recommend.
If you liked DOS2, you'll like this even more. The conversation camera angles make the dialogue far more impactful than previous titles. It reminds me a lot of Dragon Age: Origins, which in turn was inspired by the original Baldur's Gate games.
Not far enough to give a true review or recommendation but I've played all the BGs and other games built on D&D and if you liked the older ones this one fills that hole.
takes some time to understand the mechanics HOWEVER, this game is for the fantasy person. be patient and explore the world. take your time for learning the game but once you've mastered it you'll not wanna put this game down. the world is very detailed like fall out and the out comes are very vast. although playing through the game multiple times can seem redundant but this helps your learn which class you enjoy the most.
Been years and they still havent released the game every update is barely any content and still no real release in sight.
love it cant wait for the monk then ill put WAY more time in
Is this game ever going to get finished? Been out for 2 years and only 1 act? I loved Divinity 2, I was hoping this would be just as good. Maybe I'll change my review when some shit actually comes out ffs.
One of the best rpgs I've ever played and it isn't even the full thing yet. The writing is really good and there are so many choices and different routes a conversation or quest can go depending on how you act, what you do, or what you say. So much depth and it's only the first act and Early Access still. Can't wait for the full game to come out, definitely one of my favorite games already.
I like the game. I know i agreed to the early access .. but two years.. cmon man.. just wait for full release. Go play ER
Highly, Highly HIGHLY recommend this game. It's only in early access but it's very good. Very fun to play by yourself even better with your friends. Companions are 3D. Very good game
Game optimization is horrible, constant lag, but game can be fun if you can get passed all that
Well if you liked Divinity this is also a great game for you with more details, better graphics and more depth. Despite being in early access for so long, there are still quite a few bugs and glitches (ladders are a nightmare to navigate). The main problem I have with this game is the amount of RNG you have to put up with. Sometimes you're lucky and a boss dies in a couple of rounds. Then some low goblins gets lucky and you die to a couple of crits. EVERYTHING is a die roll. Some people may like this, I just find it irritating because if you roll high it sometimes feels like cheating and if you roll low even easy tasks become frustrating. And yes, I already use weighted dice.
This game is nothing like the other Baldur's Gates. It's just Divinity Original Sin with a DND skin mod.
Look, I clicked the yes button for leaving a positive review but really I'm on the fence. At the time of writing this review, Patch 8 is on the horizon and I quite frankly hope it fixes bugs and adds more content. Only being able to reach Level 4 currently really limits the progression of your character, making the game turn slightly stale but you have the quest lines to keep you going.
P.S. I have yet to see a hit chance above 30%
Currently not too impressed with this game. There are visual glitches, like camera angles and glitched out conversations, as well as joining a cut-scene late and seeing clipped characters/black screen.
Some amateur style effects that really should have been resolved before release, like no spoken dialogue for your character (despite choosing a voice), and Times New Roman font on a lore page/book looks like something out of an intro Computer Science class project.
The biggest annoyance is either the amount of misses/Critical misses allowing you to basically lose a fight, or the fact that friends triggering a cut-scene will not trigger on your screen, so you miss the lore/conversation.
Definitely potential, but definitely NOT worth $60 at this time. Should be free-to play or at MOST $15 to play test
'we've been in early access for years'
did y'all forget covid interrupted development for a solid year and a half or
(and i'm glad i got in ea for a game i was looking forward to, if only because the sheer number of bug reports everyone has submitted means i'm less likely to encounter them in the future)
Finally found that feeling from when I was playing BG1 and BG2 as a kid
Pretty good content for an EA.
DND VIBES
amazing rpg, been loving the patches and very happy with the development.
can't wait to play all the acts.
The developers have done such an amazing job with such attention to detail and fidelity to the tabletop experience: allowing you to play as the kind of character you want and follow the path you make for yourself through the story.
You can throw your gnome friends!
from the first days of release which had the game in a completely unplayable state on my computer to now has been a fun journey to see. having run all current content on patch #7 leaves me knowing this game will be a 10/10 when finished. The game was not perfect but was still very enjoyable. Larian Studios is leading RPG genre making it better and better and Baldur's Gate 3 is proof.
It's a good beta. Looking forward to even more races and classes.
This game is going to be legendary. It is on a whole next level when it comes to RPG experience, especially D&D one.
The amount of attention to the world, to detail, characters and everything is insane. It also, thankfully, tries to slightly amend and improve D&D ruleset for PC game experience - which is the right thing to do. It might make purists red in face with rage, but it's just a better game that way.
I only hope they will not run out of steam with last act like they did with DoS2 - they fixed it, but it took another year.
Truly an amazing experience. If you rocked DO2, this is DO2 +++++++++++
Its obviously prerelease, but should be a great game
Great game in the great tradition of Larian! I enjoyed the heck out of Divinity Original Sin 2 also, a great deal!
35 hrs of restarting because my character wasn't hot enough.....so i mean yes but also wait til its released
I purchased this in 2020. It's now 2022. I also understand what early access is. A 2.5 year time period in early access with no end in sight isn't what I was expecting. I'm very disappointed on the lack of progress towards a finished product and I have some valid concerns that this will never be complete. I would suggest that you don't buy this game until after it's complete, if it ever is. When will this game be "done"?
Another fantastic game from Larian and it's not even finished yet! Besides a few bugs here and there, after all it is in early access, this game is rich in story with likable characters and fun dialogue, combat and encounters. On top of this, it only gets better playing with friends. Can't wait to see this game at release!
Fantastic game so far, a little buggy here and there but these games never disappoint, i played Divinity 2 (made by the same developers) and it was a fantastic experience, very detailed, fun, easy to understand and get into, it was the first dnd esque game i ever played and it was an amazing experience, glitches and bugs during early access however are to be expected so i wont fault the game at all for this as long as these small bugs get fixed (and i trust this company with its game) if i had to provide any suggestions though, i have three in particular, a paladin class that utilized healing and blessing spells much like a cleric but they can use two handed weapons like Longswords, Greatswords, Warhammers etc as well as 2 races, Skeleton, much like in divinity 2 and a Warforged race
Baldur's Gate III, the George R. R. Martin of videogames.
Don't waste your time and money until Larian finish what they've started.
D&D without all the character sheets!
I am just starting this, so I don't know where it will take me.
The first few hours have been fun.
As others have mentioned, they said it'd be a year. We're approaching two years and the livestream today was neat, but lets just say it did nothing to inspire confidence that this game will be out by 2025. Where's the update on main game progress? I feel like if there was good news, they would share it... so where is the news? We're literally approaching double the estimated delivery time and we have no idea where the game is at in terms of main game development.
"Great game, but as a result of it I will likely never pre purchase a game again. I feel like this game abused what a pre purchase is vs a kickstarter." - Marlock_King, most popular review of the game currently.
Its fun. I believe its heading in the right direction. Would like to see more of the story and a higher level cap tho
I've played this game since day one beta release. It is leaps and bounds better than what it was back in Oct 2020, I can't wait to see full release, as a HUGE Divinity Original Sin 2 and DnD fan. This game is a no brainer must buy
If you like DnD, this is for you. Just make sure your computer can run it well or else its pretty laggy.
Right now game is looking to be great at full release, just wary of final act issues they had in the past. Just beware of many of the negative reviews written by kiddos who must have loved Fallout 76 at release or completely missed the developer's response about early access or their history of development.
It's pretty much 5e, but it is still in pre launch so there are some buggy things and we don't know all the characters we can play yet. However, for a prelunch, the actual playability, graphics, ect are very nice and the controls are pretty intuitive, regular Larian type. All in All, 4 out of 5 stars, so far.
Most people will not like the fact the games taking so long to get done but i'm enjoying the hell out of it.!!!!
In love with this game! First played it a few months ago and it was Fun! But the real fun I had was when I convinced some friends to get it. Being in a party and making decisions with them, only knowing it's going to end bad is a joy for sure. Played through most of DOS2 so I know this games in good hands! the constant patches goes to show how much care Larian studios is putting into this!
Don't pay attention to the number of hours on my account. I actually had more than 300 hours on a... hum... VERY LEGAL version of the game before I purchased it on Steam (money was tight before but hey, I was able to afford it now !).
This game is really becoming one of my all time favourite games of all time. I can't wait for it to finally fully release.
Patch 8 is also the best patch to date, bringing a lot of welcomed additions, overwholes and fixes.
Of course the game is not perfect which is to be expected for an early access game. Larian has made steady progress (although too slowly for some) and is apparently headed for a full release in 2023 which I can see happening.
This is my first ever review. Normally I can't be bothered but in this case, I feel very much obligated to given the situation.
Let me be clear: DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!!
I bought this game in early 2021 at full price, believing the talk about a one-year beta. Fast forward to now and all we've received are updates that are little more than new skins. The updates and live streams tease the promise of a complete product but are never enough to give you an idea of how far along the game is. All the while we've been stuck with just one chapter that can be completed in less than 20 hours.
As it stands there's no indication that this will ever be "done" and after seeing the quality of the latest "positive" reviews, I have to wonder if they haven't been bought to keep review percentages high. Given the rarity of discounts (never more than 10%), I'm beginning to feel as if I've been scammed.
In Conclusion: I reeeaaaalllllly hope I'm wrong. I loved Divinity and I know I'll love this too if it ever finishes development. I hope I haven't been scammed because there really is great promise here but I repeat, Do Not Buy This Game. It's not worth it even at a 50% discount. Wait for a full release. You'll thank me later.
Game is amazing even in its early access state. I fully believe that once BG3 finally fully releases it will be a contender for GOTY.
Rich with detail, lore, quests, outcomes and more. Amazing early access. Very excited for full release
Really disappointing. Why do the gnomes look like short elves?
DOWN, DOWN, DOWN BY THE RIVER!
if you are interested in a mean DM simulator, then this is the game for you. if you are in need of a game that randomly skips turns, breaks it's own rules without explanation, and does not want you to understand what is happening or why, then this is the game for you. I have returned to this game for hopes of it getting better due to my favorite IP and studio working together, and yet with each addition of a new feature this game seems to grow itself a new foot to be auto fired upon.
i use sword, i kill, good game.
Reactions still not fixed even after the introductions of the bard class. What's the point of a "reaction" if u have to preemptively use it?
Plays like Divinity 2, what more is there to say? The final product is going to be outstanding!
Great game. Love the game but until they remove this ridiculous level cap and not charge $60 for early access and not deliver on content. Skip it.
I haven't played all act 1, but I love this game. There are so many things to do, so many choices. I can kill, I can talk over, I can walk over meaningfull npc's. Yes, there are many bugs and it's in EA, but it is Larian and I have faith in them. If you dont want to play not finished game, just wait for full release. Or support studio like I did and wait for this full epic game :)
please let me level up past level 4, there is enough content in the game for way more levels than this, I feel like additional levels is less work than new playable races why is it taking so long?
I have enjoyed the interface and game quality. Keep up the good work on developing this outstanding game.
The best first mission I have seen ever.
Game with a lot of potential. Give the devs time and it will be amazing
the game is so damn great, even the early access is unexpectedly huge.
better try with friends
I love the game. Fun, great self aware dialog.
The camera angles at times and managing the scene took forever to get used too. Camera AI needs some love.
It is and was worth the wait. Ive been waiting for 20 years for this game to come out, and it's finally here!
Early access should be canceled. How crap the game was when it first opened and the progress two years later is awful and ruined the Baldur's Gate franchise. Give us IWD3 instead at this point!
Maybe I'll change this review in 2023.
I bought this under the assumption it would be completed at some point
The game is so masterfully made, I cannot wait to see when it is finalized. The graphics are beautiful, the story is wonderful and there are so many ways to explore it (many different classes, races, backgrounds, etc.). If you are a fan of D&D, Baldur's Gate 3 is perfect for you. Amazing character creation, story arcs, etc. GET THIS GAME. With each new patch there becomes a new mystery to solve. Not only that, but because it is in early access if there is a bug or something wrong with the game you can report it to the devs and they will fix almost immediately in small hotfix patches. Any input you might have will be listened to. Larian studios can take all my money if they want
Beware, many people who purchased this early access game knowing it was in early access have left reviews warning that this game is, in fact, in early access! Read the "Early Access Game" just above where you're supposed to purchase the game (wow, you AREN'T supposed to skip those?????) and decide if the timeline thus far and the way that they describe things in that tab line up with your expectations for the game. If you purchase this expecting it to be "DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS 5TH EDITION + ALL CORE EXPANSION BOOKS AND 3 FULLY WRITTEN CAMPAIGNS" you are not going to get the game you wanted in the slightest. Stop throwing your money around with reckless abandon and then getting upset when you do so, people. Read. The. Early. Access. Tab. First.
Baldur's Gate 3 is amazing. It is literally DnD 5e: The game.
The story is really interesting and feels like an actual dnd campaign, the characters are really interesting and cool, the combat reminds me of Fire Emblem + DnD, it's alot better than Icewind Dale and I absolutely love it :D Very intense and fun, much better than Icewind Dale imo
Very good :DDDDDDD
edit: only thing i'd say is I wish we had better/more character creation options, like Aarakocra (not gonna happen, probably) height sliders, and better/more in depth facial customization? Maybe a hair length slider, and more hair options too? (like more short-ish straight hair options) Also, I kind of wish there was no limit on how long your name can be. I wanted to name my guy Beriyl Edmund Ciphre von Aschwaz (because he usually refers to himself as his entire name when introducing himself to people) and while its still funny for him to say "I am Beriyl von Aschwaz" when introducing himself, i wish he could say his entire name (Which he can't because its past the character limit :C)
Be nice if they would finish the game already
The game is very fun and i cant wait for the full release. Good DnD based game and it follows the rules really well. story is engaging and fun and all the companions are interesting in there own ways. highly recomend this game to anyone who likes rpgs.
This game has been fun so far. hopefully they add a few new races, classes, and subclasses when the full game releases.
love the game but wish it go to console like 1and2 was
Has huge potential but has been in EA for about 2 years now. The game locks you at a maximum of level 4 too so the EA stagnates about half way.
Nah man. 2 years into EA and it still has TONS of bugs. Game is pretty big, but I don't get the feeling it's going to ever be worth more than $30.
The game is freakin amazing. I sincerely am having trouble coming up with anything negative about it other than I wish it was finished!
You can throw a ball for a dog and it retrieves it for you , and you can pet said dog.10/10
Very Impressed. I've had a lot of problems with major games recently {New World, Cyberpunk 2077}, but this one so far has not disappointed. Needs a few fixes with inventory management and some minor tweaks, but so far so good. [10/10 Voice Acting] [10/10 Graphics] [10/10 Gameplay] I'm a little concerned that it is 2 years out and still early access. I hope the developers are still rocking it HARD! All in all a great buy for the 59.99$ pricetag. Haven't had a happy purchase like this in a good long while. BUY MY DUDES!
Save Scum 3: Once More With Feeling
It's a major step up in presentation from other iso RPGs. A lot of world interactions and ways to game the system like you could in a tabletop. Combat is weird and in some ways you can be super tactical and pull off some cheesy moves, but one bad turn and you're going to be reloading your quicksave as encounters are tuned high.
It would be less frustrating if you could control how the fights started, but even if you take the time to set up an ambush (or to counter one) by putting your people into tactical positions, it will often move them where it wants when the fight starts. Which is weird because there's a lot of terrain that is made for tactical deployment that you can climb or jump to.
The biggest problem I'm having with the game though is the story threads and side quests presentation. There's a lot to find and most NPC's have something to say but the conclusions are often behind several skill checks and if you fail one that's it, story thread/side quest over unless you reload or wait until your next character.
Baldur's Gate 3 has good bones, but the meat is rotten.
Super amazing for an Early access, the amount of content here is MIND boggling, if you don't mind a few audio or visual glitches I highly recommend! Only thing that disappoints me is that the level cap is only level 4 in this early access, and there is NO MULTICLASSING.
outstanding RPG feels like D&D, hours of fun
Waiting for years ... that's so called pre purchase was just a Early Access -.- never again
Abusing early access. in EA you are level capped to level 4 in an rpg game that consists of artificial road blocks such as high level npc in certain areas to stop under leveled characters from going into high level places.
It's great to play and there are multiple ways to go and play but the time to complete just one path is just over two hours if your smart about it. And yes I mean complete because in the two years since it's release it's still on the first chapter. Basically your paying full price for barely one quarter of the game, so unless it's at least 80% off in price, or they decide to stop adding new classes instead of new chapters. You are better off saving your money.
The game is fun but I would recommend purchasing at full release. There are quite a number of glitches with an annoying one being the camera movement in certain areas. The adamantite forge is also glitched so you will not receive your crafted items. I love the play style but the level cap being at level 4 along with the glitches and only a single chapter it's hard to say the game is worth it in its current state. I would say to purchase Divinity and play through those series in the meantime.
If you as an developer don´t have enough money so you sell your beta for full price. 2 Years of "early access" and still the game isn´t even close to being finished. No substential updates either, scam.
You'll laugh you'll cry you'll create a chain reaction of exploding barrels that will obliterate anything living.
Fun? Yeah I thought it was fun.
This is a superb game and not only that, a great DnD platform. I can see completely different campaigns being released as DLC, launched using what is being created here, there's so much depth to the ruleset implemented here.
It's laughable to see people complaining that "this is not a full game", "they are taking too long", "there are no updates". Let Larian finish/polish the game! They have been doing updates every 4-ish months with tons of changes, which is great. Guess what, if there was no early access, none of the community's feedback would be addressed and people would be complaining that they want to play the game asap. If you want to buy an early access game, know what kind of product you're buying.
i was instantly addicted, cant wait for full release.
There are time where the game acts rather wonky (Like stretched character models and the game acts up during a long rest) though this is still in beta mind you, so if you can gloss over those issues than you enjoy the game
This game is insane, as you'd expect from this studio. The thought and detail that are going into it are absolutely refreshing in the gaming industry these days.
Pros:
- Graphics Clean
- Runs Smooth
- High replayability due to various paths given.
- Story really interesting
- Characters are fun
- Character design is great
- Abilities/Weapons are fun and cool
- Literally 9/10 Game
Cons:
- A few bugs so save a lot so you can reload if something glitches
- Had this game since release 2 years ago and it still isn't out (but I know it will be worth the wait)
llotta work for unreleased game
This could have been great, but they made the controls way too wonky, and balance is all over the place, even more than 5th edition D&D normally. Not worth the over a hundred gigabytes of storage space.
One of the most immersive RPG I have ever played.
Tried this for first time when patch 7 came out, and found it to be a very fun and interesting game! I played BG2 years ago, and this definitely is even better.
However, game experience suffers significantly if not using the absolute latest hardware with beyond recommended specs.
For example, MacBook Air M1 8GB, literally nothing running but BG3. I tried this, and even with graphics set to Very Low and framerate limited to 30 (don't miss enabling HDR in first GUI settings as this was off by default or the game runs even worse), I have to frequently quit the game entirely to speed it back up to somewhat playable, especially when there is a lot of NPCs or background effects (e.g. Druid Grove, Underdark).
Not using beyond recommended specs ruined the gaming experience for me.
For Windows, forget it. I have a couple desktop rigs, one 64GB RAM, mid-range Nvidia card, decent quad core i7-Intel CPU and the game reaction is 1-2 seconds to recognize a button click (DirectX11), making it completely unplayable.
This is a great version of Dungeons and Dragons in a video game. Still early play, but story line and mechanics are very well done.
Do you love the Divinity series?
If the answer is yep! You will love this.
Hands down my favorite game of all time. Larian and Sven have absolutely nailed it. Im generally not a fan of early access but Larian has this down to a science, not as abusive, but as a mechanism to present content, get user feedback and improve. They've demonstrated time and time again that changes requested by us, the players are taken seriously and are appreciated by the development team. Further, early access has more content than most full games, and the replay-ability factor is off the charts. Whether its playing as good or evil, with different party members or simply making new dialogue choices, i've rarely had the same more than a few times. I'll be disappointed if the upcoming patch release doesnt provide another area to explore, but it wont keep from eagerly anticipating the full release. If you like D&D, or turn based rpg's def check it out.
Good game, Im sure its only to be amazing when the full release it out. My only issue is how they released it in Early Access a bit too soon.
Overall I'm a fan. That being said- things I don't love:
Hate that there's no pause feature- hoping that shows up eventually (at least in single player mode). Also not loving the turn style combat. I'm a huge BG1 & 2 fan and much preferred the pause/strategize method of attack. I hate that I can't move a particular player out of the way for me to cast an AOE spell where I want it. Otherwise I lose attack turns to shifting them around and it's usually not worth it, so I don't use a lot of spells. Aside from that, I also think the inventory system could use some work. I like the idea of camp supplies, but it should be easier to send them all to camp if that's going to be an option.
Things I do love:
The maps and graphics are pretty great. The story line is killer- I always dreaded mind flayers and I love that they're the whole center piece to this one! I also really enjoy the companions so far and I can't wait to see all the other ones that show up later in the game. The dialogue options are as great as always, though I do wish I could swap between companions to answer in order to take advantage of each characters different skills.
I'm excited to see where updates occur and how it shakes out on final release! :)
Fantastic, Fantastic, Fantastic. This is now my gold standard of how to make an RPG. Wondering back in on completed area's I can see no less then 4 additional routes/paths to complete a given section. I talked to a few friends and while some story beats were the same there was plenty of things where we went "Wait you can do that?" or "That didn't happen in my game.".
That being said there were double digit number of bugs/crashes/quest breaks that required going back an hour to load an older save to fix. They have been open about listing all of the odd quirks and fixes in their updates, but some of the issues I experienced has forums posts since launch.
Like many others in this review, the game is going in the right direction but the progress is rather slow, so its up to you if you want to support the developers currently. Personally I would've bought it at its full release as to not spoil the story for myself.
Pros:
-tons of options for carrying quests
- scenerey is amazing
chracters look and react realistically
CONS:
-not all the classes are avaiable from the PHB
A lot of love has clearly been put into this game, if the final product continues in the same vein as Act1 in early access then for me this will be my GOTY in 2023. Had an absolute blast with this game, the options in combat are mind boggling. Plenty of player choice and multiple ways to approach situations. And for people who say this is just a DOS2 clone have clearly not played the game. Based on my time with the game in EA I highly recommend, just wish the game was releasing this year, but I can happily wait until next year if that means we get a quality product!
Not yet, after 2 years of early access it's still an Alpha stage! Every major patch breaks saved games, many parts under developpement, still work to do in caracters classes .. but the game is well started,it will be an excellent game when Larian has it finish.
Its great for old and new D&D fans as well as anyone who enjoys anything from this studio.
while this game on base is very good and lays out some of that classic larian goodness, its still stuck in early access purgatory. As is you are paying for a very nice proof of concept.
I can't wait to romance that sexy succubus one of these days when the game is out of EA... Move over, Wyll.
I bought this when it launched in EA.....two years ago. While the D&D aspects are great, it feels like Larian has bit off more than they can chew with this one. I still have some hope it won't suck, but the EA you get as of this review still isn't great and you're capped at level 4. The same as it was two years ago.
I wasn't expecting BG2, but I was expecting something resembling BG instead of DOS with D&D elements.
so this game will auto save over the most recent save file meaning it will INTENTIONALY ruin your other characters save if you make a new one lost about three hours of progress STUNNING WORK DEVS ABSOLUTELY STUNNING
I can pick up small people as a weapon
It's Dungeons and Dragons fifth edition with nice graphics.
The story seems quite good so far, likewise the companions.
Larian Studios is a gem. Amazing developpers that are currently creating an amazing game, which is already better than most of the games around. Moreover, their feedback policy is a proof that they care about the game they are making and that they care about their community. The game already has more playability and lifetime than a lot of other games coming around. Graphics are simply stunning, mechanics are updated patches by patches, visuals and UI are modernized, all of that by taking account of the returns of the community playing the EA.
I see some people complaining about it being in an early access for almost 2 years now, but it was told in the buying clause that it wasn't for everyone yet since it was mainly in order to get the players opinions. And on that point, it is first a brilliant idea and secondly a one that they are doing marvelously. They are willing to deliver us a fully made game.
If you're hesitating to buy Baldur's Gate 3 in the current state, I'll advice you to read the clause first. But I can tell you that you will surely have a great time playing the game, I promise you.
Great work so far, take all the time you need Larian !
