ALRIGHT THIS WAS LONG DUE

wtf is that quality of life improvement developers have said that they will improve this in September its more than a month now , still nothing.

WHY PERSONALLY I HATE THIS UPDATE

I got this game for free on epic giveaway but still i purchased this game on steam for this very sole reason that there was no 2k launcher on steam. But **** my luck as soon as i purchased the bioshock collection here we have this too.

MY pc

So i have a low end pc and as much as i played this it was more than 30 fps on medium settings.now after this so called quality of life upgrade that shitty 2k launcher uses my cpu sometimes more than game. from what i expected to be the best gaming experience of my life become a frustrating one.

MANY PEOPLE DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE ARE HATING THIS

maybe becoz they have a decent pc enough to run cyberpunk with their 5090 and there are completely okay with converting an already good optimised game into a crappy experience.

WHAT NEXT

nothing , seriously we can do nothing those developers play us as they want we just have to adjust with whatever they are thinking . how deaf they can be that they don't hear various fans who are supporting and are fans of the series.

they just have to do a simple thing to remove this 2k launcher crap and it is taking them more than 2 months. it just explains how serious are they.

Tormentor89
Tormentor89

Remove your crap launcher, pricks. Instead of adding stupid launchers maybe patch the bugs and some of the downgraded graphical assets in this so called "remaster".

This was an amazing experience from beginning to end. It's one of those shorter games that feels longer if you take the time to hear the story, which I strongly recommend.

Great game, but thumbs down for putting a stupid pointless shitty inhibiting 2K launcher for no reason other than piss off players.

Great story, design, art style, gameplay. Only issue was the lack of ammo but that's part of what makes it fun

A cult classic, golden era of bioware. Worth to play even today, the game still holds quite well runs great too. I would recommend for everyone who loves good story and gameplay. A masterpiece.

It should be a crime that in this day and age I can't play any version of Bioshock onPC without constant crashing. Sometimes 5 minutes in, sometimes half an hour or an hour. I love Bioshock, which is why it sucks so bad that I can't even play it on PC anymore!

Sakkon

new update makes the game unplayable. Its a very good game but I cannot play it any more due to an update that adds a third party launcher which does not work on my computer for reasons unkown to me. DO not buy this game. DO not give 2K money until they remove this launcher if i could refund I would. Steam needs to allow us to roll back updates to prevent this from happening in the future.

Game is also very buggy and crashes alot. 2k is more concerned with pushing their launcher than actually fixing the game for more modern systems.

peterralph812

one of the best games I've played in years. Twists, turns, and adventure at every corner, excellent acting, the controls are sharp and fun, the entire game is gorgeous. It is well worth your money and time.

IsaacAsimov
IsaacAsimov

Solid game that builds on the system shock formula. Great aesthetic, environment, mood, story, gunplay, etc. It all comes together really cohesively. If you managed to play this before the update added the 2K launcher causing a slew of technical issues, you're lucky. Otherwise, you may have more luck with other versions of the title.

BioShock Remastered can hardly be called a remastered in anything other than visual. Technically, it suffers from the same amount of bugs and issues that plagued the original game as well as introducing new ones. Coupled that with the newly introduced 2K launcher, it's not hard to see why so many people felt disappointed by this game. But, not me. Why? Because many of the problems I mentioned earlier can all be easily fixed by a few mods including bypassing the 2K launcher. What's left are only a few minor bugs that hardly many people would ever notice. And that's a price I'd be more than willing to pay if it means playing BioShock again in the greatest visual and artistic fidelity possible. To see BioShock Remastered fully realized, it's essential that you installed the following five mods:

1. https://www.nexusmods.com/bioshock/mods/5
2. https://www.nexusmods.com/bioshock/mods/4
3. https://www.nexusmods.com/bioshock/mods/18
4. https://www.nexusmods.com/bioshock/mods/24
5. How to disable the 2K launcher https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2857595480

These mods are incredibly easily to download and should take you no more than 30 minutes to install. With a bit of elbow grease, I promise the end result will be worth it. However, if you're someone who's absolutely adamant on not downloading mods for whatever reasons, then yes. I'd recommend that you steer away from this version of the game and buy the original BioShock instead.

As for the actual game itself, what more can I say about it that hasn't already been said? Bioshock is a generation and genre defining game that was groundbreaking when it first got released in 2007, and whose creative and cultural influence can still be felt today. The perfect marriage between narrative and gameplay is still something most studios strive to replicate within their own games, and it was Irrational Games that set our industry on that path with BioShock. For your own good, would you kindly open your wallet and buy this game?

BioShock trilogy is wonderful, Bioshock infinite was amazing and the 1st game is good as well, I enjoyed it, altho it crashed 4 times.
I don't know if it was because it needs 2K Launcher or the game is too old... but besides crashing it was fun to play now I need to play the 2nd. ^^

There's no denying Bioshock is a good game, and you should definitely experience it.

Just a shame this Remastered edition is so friggin problematic with graphics. When launching it will constantly switch between windowed and full screen without you changing anything, can't get it to keep the setting and you have to manually change a lot on launch. Also, if you alt-tab out to do something else, it can take 10-20 tries to get the game to maximise on the screen again. Pain in the ass.

Great game in theory, but impossible to play because of save issues. Maybe the un-remastered version is better about this.

I like the game, though I haven't had much time to play it.

However, as of the recent """Quality of life""" update, 2K added a shitty launcher, that, (bonus points) CAN'T EVEN LAUNCH THE GAME (linux desktop, worked perfectly before update).

Luckily, there are some guides on how to bypass the launcher, but nobody should have to put up with this shit.

This game is incredible. The remaster is a mixed bag. I did receive this for free as I already owned the original.

However. This isn't a good buy. I'm not like all the other folks complaining about the launcher that was recently added. Yeah, it's an extra step, but it's really not bad. Compared to the likes of old origin or Uplay, it's very unobtrusive.

The game does look a bit prettier. Some textures and models were either remade or touched up in some way. Dynamic lighting for sure adds some spice here. Some changes or "Enhancements" were done by someone who clearly didn't understand the original dev's art direction. Overall though, not terrible.

The main problem is the crashing. Dear lord. I've played a good amount of the original across all platforms, as it's one of my favorite games of all time... and I've never experienced crashes. Maybe one or two. This remaster however, save often if you do buy, as across several hardware configurations I'm getting the exact same crash. Everything is fine, and the game just freezes. The picture remains, sound continues, and it locks up so bad you can't get to your task manager... just gotta wait it out. It happens far too often, as I've experienced enough crashes to the point that I have not been able to complete a playthrough due to just giving up as I'm tired of losing progress to crashes in a game that never had them to begin with. Major step backwards in quality, as this happens often enough that there's no way they didn't catch this in testing. I'm not alone in experiencing these either.

We'll see if they fix things up. There are rumors of both a new Bioshock and an RTX remaster of the original, so the Bioshock wheel is turning. They have acknowledged issues with the launcher, but we'll see if they actually do anything, as they didn't make this game. Irrational did.

Bioshock is a game that has definitely defined itself as a classic, and it holds up perfectly to this day. It has a great sense of environment and story, and it has an interesting mix of horror and shooter genres. Ultimately, it's an experience that I would highly recommend.

However, what's more important here is the performance, stability, and 2k's launcher. I may have been simply lucky, but I had virtually no issues with performance or stability. I had only one crash, and the game ran really well, with high frame rates and no stuttering. That said, the 2k launcher is still just... dumb. It serves no purpose whatsoever, except for adding another step to starting the game and potentially causing a host of technical issues. You can technically start the game directly from the .exe, which bypasses the launcher, but I still found (with Bioshock 2) that if the launcher is feeling disagreeable, this step may not even help.

Pros:
- Game is spooky but very fun and shooty
- Excellent story and environment
- Fun weapons and encounters
- Wrench is real shit

Cons:
- 2k Launcher
- Wow really the 2k Launcher
- Not as stable as it could be
- Houdini Splicers make me cringe

I missed out on this one when it first came out, so this was my first play-through; IT WAS AWESOME. I really enjoyed the lore of Rapture, the spook factor of the Big Daddies, and the decisions that you can make throughout. Wasn't a long one, took me about 15 hours to complete, but it was super fun and worth my time.

An all time classic. A MUST PLAY for anybody even vaguely into games with plot. Andrew Ryan remains one of the best characters in all of gaming. I recommend this version over the original due to the graphics looking significantly better and the presence of achievements :) Bioshock 1 is the highlight of the series for sure.

Was really looking forward to playing the 3 titles one after the other for the first time starting with this. Decided on the remaster as I like something to look nice. Looks like both the original and remaster of 1 do not work properly on Windows 11. I can get the remaster to run on Win11 but just cant get it to save and got so frustrated with getting so far and then having the save fail over and over and losing all my progress for that session. Occasionally it would work but just couldnt find a solution. The original wont run at all, just gives me a black windowed screen and nothing else. Have spent 12 hours trying to get through, make saves and get through the game but have just given up. Have installed Bioshock 2 remastreed and that runs and saves even using the 2k launcher.. Its a shame, was really looking forward to it.

Good thing you get the original game when buying the remastered version, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered. It's barely a remaster and it requires you to install 2K's useless launcher.

Played for about 2 hours and was met with a game breaking glitch where a spider splicer won't spawn for me to photograph for a story mission. Can't progress any further into the game. In general the game is really buggy and a poorly done remaster. Would not recommend.

The developers added another game launcher so you can't just launch it from Steam anymore. You need to click through multiple windows and be connected to the internet to play this game now.

Update: "Failed to Save Game" ... "Failed to Load Game" ... The launcher broke game saving and now the whole thing is unplayable — and it's been this way for weeks based on the game forum. This was free and I still feel like the developers ripped me off.

I played the original version of Bioshock at release and it was an amazing experience. A unique environment unllike any other in gaming and an excellent story that takes more than one unforseen turn. Having just finished the remaster, the game still is what it is and it's still a classic although once you know the story it didn't quite hit me with the level of awe I had the first time around. There are also some minor technical issues here that shouldn't be present in a remaster of a 2007 game. Audio logs would repeat themselves, there were a variety of graphical glitches, the stealth system doesn't have much in the way of consistency and there were audio issues from beginning to end. If you're going to issue something as a "remaster", those issues should really be addressed. Still, it's a classic and it holds up well even in 2022 and I like a lot of the little touches like a virtual museum covering the development of the game and a set of directors commentary (though why they make you find them is beyond me). If you've never played this series before, this is the one to start with. If you've played the original, it's a bit harder of a sell. Graphically it's a little more polished, but nothing drastic and the story won't impact you the same way it did. I'm glad I played it again, but I doubt there will be a third time. That being said, it was a nice bit of nostalgia wandering through Rapture again.

This game took me 10 hours to beat. It was some of the best 10 hours ive had in a good while. Id highly recommend this to ANYONE. It is VERY fun and there are many ways to play, different genes and different weapon choices. Its especially wholesome getting to save the little girls, if you harvest them, DO NOT TALK TO ME. Other than that, definitely up there with some of my favorite games.

Incredibly well-designed game with a great twist and compelling story. Gameplay is fun, even if it is a bit dated by now where we are accustomed to modern amenities. Had some issues with the text display early on but nothing the modding community can’t fix.

But lo and behold, trusty 2K released a quality-of-life update shortly after I started playing. A cynically hacked out update, with a game launcher crowbarred into an otherwise fine functioning game and breaking it. You couldn’t even start the game anymore because they forgot the damn thing. How’s that QOL?! But obviously the player experience is “paramount”. Luckily you can bypass it by launching it directly from the common folder or adjusting the launch settings.

Only reason why I'm not recommending this game, after investing around 13 hours into it, is the atrocious bug that crashes the game during saving causing you to loose progress and often resetting you to the beginning of the mission if you didn't save manually for a while.
Game itself is pretty good despite years but constant crashes make it unplayable by person of normal patience.
Only buy this on sale and if you're willing to put up with crashes and lost progress

Bioshock is a fantastic game and a must play. However, I cannot in good conscious recommend the Steam version. Too many bugs, crashes, and menu lag. Multiple times my game crashed while opening the menu or crashed mid save which resulted in losing all my save data. Please do yourself a favor and play the EPIC Store version. Turns out the EPIC Store version has a newer version of Bioshock and none of the issues mentioned above.

It's Bioshock. This game has been reviewed many times by people more qualified than me. For what it is worth though, this game is incredibly good.

It is a science fiction first person shooter set in a 1940's style world that feels very realistic. It has some survival/crafting elements and an unnerving feeling of despair throughout the world.
Give it a try if you haven't heard of it, It is more than worth the price.

You may notice that I only have 2.5 hours on record for this game. There's a reason for that: it keeps crashing.

Truth be told, I played this game back on the day on the Xbox, and loved it to death. It's a great first person shooter with a plot that's intelligent, but not trying to be TOO intelligent (like Bioshock Infinite and it's dreadful sequel were). The "Good" ending of the game made me choke up with tears, being a father of little girls myself - one of the few times a game affected me that much. I would love to replay it with the Remastered version here, but it crashes way too often for me to enjoy it. I tried to search for a solution and found that this was a common problem - which is completely inexcusable.

Don't spend money on this. Heck, just get the regular version. It may not give you accomplishments, but at least you'll be able to play it.

My favorite video game of all time. Most interesting setting in any entertainment medium, some of the best world building and writing in a video game, and some really solid (though a bit outdated) combat. I could talk about this game for hours in a myriad of ways.

Note: If the Remastered version is extremely buggy for you, you can always play the original version. Though the OG one might have some mouse issues (google for the fix), one of them is bound to work. The remaster comes with issues of its own, but either one is worth it.

Back then I believe the gameplay was revolutionary and I think I can say it aged well. You can still enjoy this game very mutch. What I really enjoyed was the Story. The game is amazing. That's all there is to it. The fact that people still praise this game after 20 years is enough evidence for that.
Then why the negative review I hear you ask? Simple. The pc port of this game is terrible. The game crashes a lot. From what I could find online it appears in different forms. For me it has a high chance of happening during a save. I have replayed some parts of the game four or five times.
In light of this tendency to crash I can't recommend you buy the game for your pc. No matter how good the game itself is.

Bioshock is a wonderful game that will probably never lose its shine. the progression and puzzles are fun, the story is dark and deep, and the difficulty is great for a casual gamer or a seasoned veteran. Being older the game is a little short, but it keeps completion and perfecting in the scope of possibility. I had a great overall experience exploring what Rapture had to offer.

The only issues i had with the remaster, is that my game would crash pretty frequently. Thankfully the autosaves are pretty frequent as well and i never really lost much progress.

The story is good, the gun mechanics and ability use could be better.
Environments are cool and in general I had fun, this is what carried the game.

But, you have to change the .ini file to get the highest settings.
Had to download the noncompressed audio and UI fix from nexusmods.
Game crashes a lot and because there is no autosave you will get set back, get used to manually saving. I got it to crash less with some ini file changes, but can't remeber what exactly.
Keybinds suck, weapons out of order if you pick one up at Neptune's Bounty, audio changes have no effect in the main menu... all of these should be an easy fix by the devs.

The remastered has fixed bugs from the original but new bugs have taken its place.
Some people recommend the original, don't, the remaster is better.

i wish there was an option between yes/no for bioshock. because it's an important game. but my god, it's aged so badly. while the art direction still holds up, it's not the looker it once was, and the remaster does butcher some aspects. the combat feels so floaty and imprecise and mushy. none of the guns or plasmids feel great. the story is.....rapture both goes deep on subjects you wouldn't expect for the time, but it never goes deep enough (a recurring trend with AAA storytelling tbh) and all that is really memorable is the Twist. and the twist is fine, i guess? like, yeah. you did some meta-commentary. congratulations. the levels themselves can sometimes be really great in their theming but i wish there was more of a sense of the day-to-day in rapture. i can't escape the feeling that bioshock needed to happen so we could get past it and onto better things (like real immersive sims such as dishonored). i will say, the challenge room stuff (formerly ps3 exclusive) is really fun and i did enjoy the psudeo-director's commentary, even though ken levine comes across as a clueless idiot at times (he is). i really don't know if you need to play bioshock. there are better games. but if you must, it's not the worst thing in the world, i guess.

It's a classic and the remastered version looks great! I ran into issues of this 15 year old game (at the time of writing) crashing, which I understand is a fairly common issues. If you run into crashing issues, look up guides on how to mitigate it, I just dealt with it and saved a lot (played Cyberpunk 2077 at launch on an xbox one so I have a high pain tolerance.)

If you haven't play BioShock yet then make sure you do! Amazing Story, Gameplay and Graphics (for the time), Controls are a tad clunky but its build on Unreal 2.5 so its a bit dated in its own right. Give this one a chance!

The atmosphere is amazing and always sets the mood properly. Whether it's the initial awe of seeing rapture for the first time, or eeriness of hearing splicers ramble and crawl around. The graphics are a bit dated even with the remaster but i never found that to be an issue and the mixture of guns and plasmids always keeps the gun play entertaining. This game is an easy 10/10 for me and is one of my favourite games of all time.

Le-Kyu
Le-Kyu

A solid classic with an excellent writing. Combat is very good and evolutionary with combining common weaponry with sort-of magical powers. Environment is worth exploring as it keep you on the edge of the seat with the occasional surprise. Audio is stunning and creepy.

ABSOLUTELY WORTH IT TO SPEND YOUR TIME IN.

Great game so far. Linear game play with good story telling is refreshing in a world of open-worlds and endless choices. Calls back to a better time in gaming. I'm probably just biased. Regardless, worth your time.

Note: Game doesn't freeze up at all for me on Windows 11. Must be an issue they fixed. Nearly 14hrs in at the time of this review with no crashing.

While I've only heard good things, the combat was really not interesting to me. The fact that I knew the story beforehand only made the game more of a chore to play.

Save Early, Save Often, Save in Different Slots. Game freezes when you try to open the map too often. Game crashes randomly while playing and sometimes crashes while saving. So my advice to you is: Save Early, Save Often, Save in Different Slots. Oh, and play the game. It's worth it.

Even though the original game is from 2007, almost everything holds up well to this day.
I especially like the art style, story and atmosphere. The gameplay and shooting is very solid with a good amount of freedom.
The ending is somewhat disappointing, but that shouldn't keep you from playing this game.

Highly recommended.

I was a bit skeptical going into this game (as I hear people talk about Bioshock Infinite quite often), but this game was an absolute delight to play. The combat was fun (reminded me of Half-Life a bit), the story was actually quite interesting, and the graphics in this remastered version are pretty good. 9.5/10, would HIGHLY recommend.

Good game overall. Certain sections were dragging somewhat for me, but the package is definitely worth playing. The RPG-like progression was very well done in this game as well. This remaster had crashing issues from my experience. I hard crashed 4 - 5 times throughout my playthrough. All of these instances resulted in losing progression. Most times I had very recent saves so it was a non issue, however the first time it happened I lost about an hour of progress. If playing I would recommend to save often, and not to use the quicksave functionality as it can get corrupted on a crash.

I am a 58 yo father, probably one of the oldest people playing this game. I am a single farther to my Son, who is 14 now. My son got this game for Christmas in 2021 from his uncle, so we installed it on his computer and he started playing. By the end of the week he had 24 hours on this game. This was horrible for me, as it was already hard for me to find ways to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his friends or just watching YouTube. So I decided to make a Steam account and get this game to see if I could maybe play alongside him. I loaded into the game, picked my character and world and started playing but I was stuck on what you where supposed to do. I asked my Son for help and he hosted a game for me to join. I loved it as it was the best time I had spent with my Son since my wife had died. This game has ever since brought me and my son closer again and now we actually spend time together outside the house together as well. This game reminded me that there's fun to be had in everything, and it has brought both me and my Son many happy memories.

Fun game. The early levels were sometimes punishingly difficult (at least for me, playing on Hard difficulty and not having much experience with these games) but once you figure out what you're doing it's not bad. What makes the combat fun and interesting is not difficulty (of which there is pretty little once you get the hang of things) but the sheer variety of ways there are to approach it. Nowadays everyone is always talking about "emergent gameplay", and this game was one of the pioneers of that. It feels really satisfying to get an idea for a clever trick to use on an enemy and have it actually work; it's also fun when the environment makes your usual strategies backfire on you in unexpected ways (for example, my go-to strategy for dealing with turrets was to zap them and then hack them, which worked great until one time I went into a water-filled room and a turret started shooting at me and I instinctively zapped it and ended up giving myself a nasty shock as well). My only complaint is that as you get farther into the game and have enough tonics and upgraded guns, you don't need to rely on cleverness so much because you can just cheese through everything with your souped-up weapons and plasmids.

An atmospheric classic with great story. A bit linear but character development choices make up for that.
