Clunky controls, frustrating platforming sections, and insufferable "sneaking". Would not recommend. Go for Bound in Blood or Red Dead 2 instead if you want a western adventure game.

I only got it to start the series though to be honest I sort of regret it. Reverend Ray is a badass but Billy Candle is such an annoying wimp. Not much to say game-play wise for a 15 year old game. You get what you expect though there seems to be a graphic issue with lighting and lenses.

So why would I recommend it? For playing as Ray of course!

How can I miss a game like this which is released 2007. I am playing all series in late 2022. The game's story is great. I would definitely recommend to play all game series. However, the first game contains of a lot of bug. It can be frustrating when you tried to draw a gun at duel. Most of time you can't draw a gun at duel beacause of bugs.

I don't often review games... but damn, this one is bad. The writing, the gunplay, the levels... it's like a textbook example of how to make a boring and uninspired game. The guns have terrible accuracy. The characters are annoying and unlikable. There are quickdraws that are stupid easy, and fist fights that are completely unreliable and require save scumming. The maps are just hideous and barren. Looks like someone took a bunch of stock assets for houses and just had a field day with a terrain brush.

I think the people that are leaving positive reviews are trolling. It's really hard to tell.

Intro

A good first title for the Call of Juarez series. It has pretty much everything you'd expect from a Wild West themed FPS. Like duels, six-shooters, lever-action rifles, double-barreled shotguns and riding horses. As good as it is, it does suffer a bit from clunky controls, weapon degradation and some timed objectives.

Positives

+ Decent soundtrack.
+ Decent replay value.
+ Good weapon variety.
+ Weapons have good impact.
+ Good aesthetics and graphics.

Negatives

- Weapon degradation.
- Controls can be clunky.
- Some objectives are timed.

feels like a long time ago i played call of juarez for the first time. it is the first game in a series of 4 games in total. .nr 1 (this game) call of juarez. nr 2 bound in blood . (nr3 call of juarez cartel but it's not on steam any more the game was so bad it got deleted) and nr4 call of juarez gun slinger. but let's face it call of juarez have always been pretty rough around the edges also when it was new back in the day. but it still a great game despite old graphics and bugs it look ok in 4k. it has a good story and well made gun play. and this game is a must play for western fans. hope you enjoy.:)

Is not a bad game but it is certainly full of bugs. From small things like enemies headshooting behind walls to the player falling through the ground on cinematics. There are other bugs like the objective (chasing parts) teleports outside the map and therefore you insta-die.

I don't think the game is worth even on discount.

The story is interesting, but the gameplay is horrendous. If they remade this game in a new engine with a better gameplay, they'd have a hit in their hands, but in 2022, this gameplay is not enjoyable and games are supposed to be fun.

Call of Juarez was the Western standard for its time, and remained so until Red Dead arrived. My experience with this one was only slightly positive, there are too many weird interactions to justify the intended difficulty, but the shooting and combat is enjoyable once you take the time to learn. Although this game is janky with its controls and overall flow of the plot and action, the series as a whole is enjoyable enough and worth checking out if you want to play a 3D cowboy game without resorting to Rockstar and their shenanigans.

Call of Juarez has the look and sometimes feel that an old title like it would. But it has that nice western charm, above decent story (enough to keep you engaged especially RR) and satisfying gun play that makes for a great 6 hour campaign.

(SPOILER FREE REVIEW)
Call of Juarez is a remarkable and memorable first person shooter experience that i cannot recommend more!

This game is great but before I start praising it I feel that there are definitely some flaws that need to be addressed beforehand. First and foremost graphics, Personally I love retro games with crude graphics because in my opinion graphics don't make a game but if you want high-res textures and models you probably won't like this game also level design can often be tricky to navigate and in certain areas I had to look up videos on YouTube to help me figure out where to go and what to do. Voice acting for any non main character felt off and was either too loud or too quiet not to mention many of them were played by the same couple voice actors and horse riding isn't particularly hard but rather awkward at times.

Now onto the positives. I really enjoyed the way the game is divided into chapters which each last about 20 minutes which made the game really easy to jump in and out of. Another thing I really enjoyed is how each chapter kept switching between 2 protagonists which provided us with a cool and new playing experience. Call of Juarez also provides a challenge when it comes to combat, Certain levels are cram packed with enemies which will make you die a few times but not to the point the game becomes unplayable. Both protagonists are likeable enough to play as and each have their own interesting backstory.

I feel the price for Call of Juarez is fair, If you are like me and enjoy crude textured older games or are a fan of westerns this game might be right up your alley! Call of Juarez gets a solid 8.5/10 from me.

I remember when I was very young my father used to play this game and I was watching him. Returning to it after so many years feels refreshing. There is some bad parts in this game like the graphics aren't like in the games that we have today and the stealth system is quite frustrating, but overall it's a good game with a great story and amazing characters.

Dudebro
Dudebro

I really like the Call of Juarez. I was raised on old early-mid 2000’s where you had to find health pickups or you were screwed, so I may have some bias. In any case, I loved both protagonists, the story of the game itself, and the backstories of both Billy and Ray. Despite what most people say, I actually really liked the stealth sections. They provide a new way to play after gunning down however many bandits you need to. I can see why they might be called tedious or boring, but to me, I get a thrill sneaking through and around enemy camps. Anyway, the parts with Ray were fun as well; it made me feel like a badass murdering everything that moved while reading from the Bible at the same time. The only negative parts in my opinion were that it’s less of a learning curve and more of a learning cliff in the beginning, and throw enemies at you from all sides during the last level. Otherwise, a very very solid 9/10 game.

For this games time that it came out I understand it can be good and cool but playing now as my first time ever and I have to be honest this game sucks and the difficulty difference is crazy. The only thing that kept me playing was the crappy voice acting and buggy rag dolls. Its a simple 3/10

I really liked this game. It's the classic half-life fps style of gameplay, but set in the wild west and with a pretty good story.

Some flaws
The game mostly ran fine. There was one part near the end of the game that just kept crashing so I had to play in safe mode, after I beat it I switched back to the best settings. That was the only real crashing issue. Some of the controls are not the best. The dueling is pretty awful. Enemies will also notice you when they shouldn't and snipe you across the map inconsistently. Stealth is basically not an option unless its literally a stealth level. I feel like most of these issues could be fixed with a proper port/remaster.

Good game,
with the caveat that the game should be held to older standards. Pretty good for its time (2006)
The duality of Ray's brute-force styled episodes compared to Billy's subtelty in his episodes (sneak and bow for example) is a unique idea. However Billy's episodes can be a bit of a chore sometimes.

Today it should be played mainly for the story, which is actually very good. However I wouldnt recommend to start the series with this, rather Bound in Blood and Gunslinger first, otherwise you wont be able to appreciate it in my opinion.

Graphics wise its beautiful, the Crysis before Crysis.

This game is horrible.

Brain dead AI, Awful level design, TERRIBLE story telling, and one of the worst opening sequences i have ever played.

The only redeeming factor is the gunplay is alright, but swapping between boring platforming sections and the fun action moments makes it a slog to get through.

Say what you want about its age but even in 2007 i would have hated this game. Just buy Gunslinger or even Bound By Blood.

Not to mention the god awful framerate on the directx 10 version which supposedly has "improved visuals"

I cant recommend this game to anyone unless you truly have nothing else to do/play.

You can't harm the "civilians" that like to call you racial slurs, shoot at you, and end up being enemies you are encouraged to kill later on.

You can't shoot corpses, and if you do, the game will either throw you into the menu, or reload from your last checkpoint. Because we're all good little Christians to the violent bigots.

The villains are completely despicable, and the fucking main villain, Juarez himself, comes back to murder a certain character because you're not allowed to double-tap a son of a bitch like him.

And the ungodly stupid cut scenes where the villains are five fucking feet in front of you, but you let them walk on by because fuck logic, you need to let these sons of bitches monologue at you, and get into a better position to shoot your ass dead.

Gatling gun segments are cancer on hard difficulty. You'll be fighting the RNG of A.I. accuracy more than anything else.

Also, you need to draw your gun like a duel to shoot Juarez at the end, but does the game tell you that? No.

Will you have to sit through an unskippable cut scene over and over until you figure that out? Yes.

Guns are limited in their use, as the more you use them, the more damaged they become, so you're encouraged to switch weapons somewhat regularly, but the guns the enemy drop are usually pretty crappy themselves, so what's the point? I never had any real issue with it, but it was always annoying having to drop a firearm I enjoyed using because it was a moment away from blowing up.

Billy sucks shit with his constant whining, and the groans/moans he makes as he climbs things, which he does a lot. The god damn mountain climbing segment, for example. His whip mechanic is cool, and the bow is fun, but that's it.

Preacher never stops quoting the fucking bible, which was cool at first while I was carrying my bible around and making quotes over corpses, but he can't speak unless it's in a quote, and it gets old real fast. He has chest armor that may, or may not block a bullet on occasion. He also has focus (only when you're not fighting a boss) which is what you have to exploit the hell out of to get through hard difficulty.

The game is old, janky, and a genuine frustration to play at times.

That being said, I liked the older game feel of it, and enjoyed the gritty immersion it had to offer at times.

Would I recommend buying it? Eh, if you got some money and time to burn and want to play a janky old game for fun, sure.

5/10

P.S.
Fuck the god damn eagle on the god damn mountain. I have a save when I'm by it's nest, and I swear I will whip that sum'bitch out of the sky before I uninstall this game! Just you wait, you god damn over-sized rat with feathers!

This was a little rough to play in 2022. I wouldn't buy it unless:
* you're okay with a few crashes to desktop every now and then
* you feel comfortable with troubleshooting if necessary
* even at this price tag, still wait for a sale
* you can put up with a game that feels dated at times

If you do buy it...
* you get a weird exception, delete the maps folder and re-launch the game
* save frequently, the checkpoints can be unforgiving
* go slow, this is not call of duty, you have to match the pacing
* swap guns frequently before they degrade completely

Pros:
-Story is really great, the characters are also well written.
-graphics are quite good for it's time.
-Cool mechanics

Cons:
-lot of bugs
-story is short but the tasks makes it feels long (in a bad way)
-long mission (easy task, long travelling distance, doesn't give much impression)
-your character can't run (really infuriating)
-the graphics are not bad, but if you have to look at it for a long time while traveling it gets boring and tiring.

If you don't really care about graphic and wanted a great story, you should definitely buy this game if it's on sale.

If you don't like low impression tasks don't buy this game, watch the story on YouTube instead.

This game has a typical but well written, adequately long story.
However, this is classic eurojank with some strange gimmicks young gamers will have a hard time getting used to. You'll be smart to quick save often (F5) and use Q and E to dodge bullets, even on easy mode. Also theres quite a few glitches, especially in the DX10 mode, so stay away from that and run in DX9. Some things are fixed by mods, others are just fundamental flaws in game design.

If you're an old-timer looking for a classic eurojank experience with all that comes with it, give it a try. If not, play another game from the series with more refined gameplay. This game would benefit greatly from a remake, honestly.

I imagine that if the game were more stable I would be willing to put up with the outdated and clunky mechanics of this game as the game itself does seem to be kind of interesting, but after trying multiple fixes I got to a point where I had to hard reinstall the game and in the process, restart the entire the game, which I do not care to do. If you are a dedicated call of juarez fan who hasn't played the first game then by all means try this game out, but for anyone else I would advise against this game because it's too broken in it's current state and there are very few fixes. Overall, it has promise but is simply too outdated and buggy to be enjoyed all that much, 3/10.

Fuck whoever made the rope physics but mostly fuck who ever thought it was a bright idea to awkwardly sift from branch to branch without any intention of fluency when it's sole action is to be such a thing, it's only reason for being there is to easily get you out and away quickly away from the bad guys and yet it only gets you closer to death either by their catching up to you, or you dropping to your death every other time. Was pretty fun and the world feels good to run around in for the game's age. Sometimes it felt kinda empty but I think this version is missing some content because when I was looking up a guide to get the missing secrets there were other collectibles and achievements from the xbox version so no idea why they aren't in this one. The shooting feels nice and having different ways to fight. I was playing the DRX10 version and didn't have any issues but on my second playthrough (after I unlocked Very Hard and wanted to beat it) in the boss fight in episode 13 the game crashed 3 times for whatever reason, but didn't happen the first time I did it so idk what triggered it. But besides that had no other problems. And finally I like how it doesn't let you shoot innocent and dead but let's you smack horse butts as much as your heart desires.

Maybe its nostalgia speaking but theres a good game underneath this thing,
There are several flaws and you can tell the devs were experimenting a lot with this game,
Fist fights are bad, there is no other strategy other than beat the shit out of him faster,
Guns break, I dont know if its a bad thing or not but you have to switch out your guns frequently because your guns will explode after being used for some time,
The duel system, pull your mouse back when you hear the whistle then forward and shoot the bad guys, you can also lean to dodge bullets,
Sometimes it tries to be a platformer, mostly the billy candle episodes, and then it goes back to being a shooter, reverend ray,
surprisingly very few crashes, only constant one was the game crashing during thunder sounds/image effect, which was fixed after I messed with the audio/graphics options, I dont remember

Clint Hazzard
Clint Hazzard

This game is a mixed bag. On one hand it has a decent story, great voice acting (well, at least for the main characters) and proper Wild West immersion. On the other hand, the game gets so mired in bad scripting and sloppy mechanics that it's nearly impossible to enjoy the game as intended.

At the beginning you receive a gun only for it to be taken from you a minute later. What follows is a nice little minigame where you must pick up a box to block bullets as you get chased toward a hill by deadeye cowboys. Oops, while the box was obscuring your view, you slid down a short slope and died. You tried to hold the S key to slow your descent, but gravity was stronger than your keystroke. Better luck next time, bucko.

This is just a mere taste of the unnecessary pain that this game puts you through. Small tumbles cause you to die; your whip is inaccurate as hell, even at close range; going a pixel out of bounds in certain areas will cause you to fail an objective and force a checkpoint restart; the 2nd character you play as can't climb over anything even though he can jump; you can't ADS unless it's a scope; the sound mixing is so poorly done that you'll often miss essential dialogue and be confused as to where enemies are; fistfights are hopeless unless you spam your right hook; and much more. But the biggest offender of all is the dreadful stealth system. If you so much as poke a bottle while crouched, somebody across the map will hear you and point their gun in your direction (or you'll just fail the task due to being noticed). Some of the game's areas tend to drag on more than they should, and usually you're left wandering for a while before stumbling onto the next story event trigger. The gameplay is dated in a way that makes it feel older than it is, like it was conceived in the 90's. The clunk is real.

The game is rather nice to look at on DX10, though. In one part of the game where you get to freely ride a horse around an expansive wilderness, you can tell that the devs put a lot of effort into making the atmosphere visually sublime. The various settings are always tastefully done. And while much of the combat and movement feels janky, the bow feels great to use, and enemies' hitboxes are shockingly accurate. Nailing somebody in the head from really far away feels immensely satisfying because the arrow and bullet physics have proper travel/drop velocity applied to them. Bullet time feels pretty good, too, as does the horseriding.

But despite its positives, CoJ is a rough ride. It's a shoddy Western game that looks good for its time but plays like a rusty antique. I don't recommend getting the game if you value your sanity. There were a few times where I was very close to giving up out of frustration, but the story had me hooked enough that I stuck with it (at times it had some welcome touches of magical realism, which you rarely see in a Western plot). Unless you've just got to play every Western game out there, or you're a CoJ megafan, avoid this game and look elsewhere for your fix. If you're still undeterred, just remember this: quicksaving is your friend. You'll thank me later.

How can someone sell a game which is bugged and can't be played? You can't draw your gun in duels and this hasn't be fixed for over 10 years?! If you would have luck, you'll be able to draw it once in 30 attempts... Lazy and lousy developers!

Pretty fun game, make up for the lack of checkpoints with quicksaving and you got yourself a diamond in the rough. Gonna play the other two right now.

Retro Review

This one is a game I wanted to play for a long time but never got to it. There are not that many western shooters out there, at least not fps. Grabbed it recently in a bundle at the last sale and thought I give it a go as the pictures look intriguing but also of putting for some reason

Gameplay
First of all, this version of the game is not solely an old game but, despite not advertising anything, is basically a patched/enhanced version of the base game as I had zero bugs, no start-up problems on windows 10, I could alt-tab anytime, steam overlay worked fine, many possible versions to boot, full hd support, has decent controls and quick save.
I can’t ask for more, props to actually serving an old game on steam and making sure that it works on modern system without the customer doing any patchwork themselves.

In this game you constantly change between characters after a chapter, one being very combat focused who has Armor to deflect shots and has generally more life. He can kick in doors and carry objects, while also being able to carry a bible in one hand and cite out of it, hilarious stuff. The other one, Billy, is gameplay wise more interesting theoretically, but I liked the simple shooter aspect more. Billy has less HP, but can shoot bow and arrow therefore being able to stealth and therefore has more stealth focused maps (although its rarely a necessity and you can quick save anytime). He has also a whip and can climb making his levels often more escape and exploration focused giving some breathing room so the action won’t get dull, game is short anyways as it takes probably around 5 hours if you take your time.

Gunplay is fun due to the focus being able to dual wield pistols, shooting each gun via left or right mouse individually. You can mix weapons, but it will only be versions of revolvers with their own perks and stats, although a sawed off is the exception but it still counts as a main weapon, like Winchester rifles or shotguns. There aren’t that many weapons, mostly a couple different pistols. Most of the time you use a Winchester rifle, quick loader pistol. There is the necessity to change weapons due to them breaking after some time, its not quick therefore doesn’t have to be done constantly.

The other aspects of the combat system are serviceable. It has health pickups in form of alcohol, that’s nice. But the accuracy of your weapons, even with the rifle, is rather low but the game expects you to shoot people from far away, they hit you despite that. Its still not a hard game due to the quick save and amount of health and ammo pickups. Feedback is also not that great, weapons lack punch, so do the revolver reloading animations I feel like.

You also have classic duels, pull out your gun after the timer ends and shoot the other person faster to death than he does to you, while you can even dodge bullets in quick time. Fun novelty, unique.

Story
The whole story is basically a western movie trope converted into a game. A man accused of something that he didn’t do; people are after him because of a different reason and in the end, it resolves in a bittersweet end. Enjoyable but so cliché to the point that the game is a huge trope.

Interesting is that you play the story while seeing how the two-protagonist cross or divert paths making some set pieces be used again but not in a repetitive manner but rather a small section is played again to show where the characters went. Good stuff.

Aesthetics

Visuals are great, but like all games of that time, there is a huge contrast between environment and character models who all look slightly plastic and shiny, this effect is the least offensive I’ve seen although I still don’t like this style. But the general models and look doesn’t matter, its more what the game conveys. You start in a fruitful country, until you later get to the deserts of Mexico where heat is visible in the air and the desert is full of dry plants.

Soundtrack is a mixed bag between mediocre and pretty neat tracks, but nothing really stood out to me which is weird as this genre is known for having good OST.

Conclusion/TL;DR
Generally, it’s a decent shooter, especially if you like the western genre. Story is forgettable although the preacher with his bible and zealously is memorable. I liked the dual wielding system and the amount of content and set pieces the game has, but the combat has its shortcomings with lacking punch. Before the gameplay gets tedious the game is already over and therefore, I quite enjoyed my time with it.
