Spoiler:

THIS GAME IS SHIT.

NOT EVEN WORTH TALKING ABOUT. BUNCH OF MECHANICS THAT DON'T MATTER.

TLDR: THIS GAME IS SHIT I WOULDN'T F THIS GAME WITH YOUR PENIS

Base building is a joke. Plot is garbage. Combat consists of using bullets at 50 times the speed you need to. Bullets rarely drop. THIS GAME IS SHIT.

ARE YOU WINNING SON? NO YOU'RE NOT BECAUSE YOU'RE OUT OF AMMO! THIS GAME IS SHIT! But hey you can always become a melee wielding psycho.

ARE YOU WINNING DAD? NO SON. THIS GAME IS SHIT.

VERY simplistic. probably could've just been a mobile game.

Namely the ai. It's sooo incredibly dumb

CorerMaximus

Lots of bugs to iron out, including game breaking performance ones that cause the game to chug on overspecced hardware. The game should have the early access tag on it- it's clearly unfinished.

Rossemikka
Rossemikka

Bland and repetitive. I completed a full run (rescued all survivors) but wont be trying any other characters as there is no replay value.
Also quite buggy - fire seems to grind the framerate to halt and I would have to exit out and restart my game after every invasion.
Save yourself the bother and give this a miss.

I've only played a short amount of time so I can't say fully how great the game is. But from the perspective of using it on Steam Deck (its currently labeled as "unknown") I will say it works perfectly. A solid 60fps and the only issue I've noticed is a stutter every now and then (seems like the game is loading) but I also experience that on my PC so its not a steam deck related issue.

It seems like a great game in the context of a portable device so I'll definitely recommend it.

Honestly, not my favorite game nor a game worth 20 bucks, the crafting and building is so hard because takes forever to gather supplies and the hordes don't attack until i un-reinforce my door to get out, which ruins my runs because i wont be able to leave or i get rushed all at once and it isn't fun because they dont automatically attack you or your base when they spawn they just sit there till you un-reinforce your door which is completely annoying.

It's an overall fun game, imo. Lots of characters, weapons, upgrades, modes and progression to be made.

Lv2Dragon
Lv2Dragon

This game feels good for a rogue-lite. The upgrades give characters overall upgrades that improve their gimmicks and the ability to play in a sandbox to explore the games mechanics is a nice twist. Tutorial was short and too the point and I felt it didn't quite cover everything necessary, like focus or stealth. Coop is currently available in horde mode which is just simple gun everything and build in between rounds. And the only major downside is a memory leak somewhere that currently has me save and exit the game every 5ish days to keep my potato from lagging hard (Most runs take me 12ish days). Otherwise a good challenging game with higher difficulties that curve sharply for those who really want to push their skills to the limit.

As far as a survival/crafting game goes, it's okay. You're better off playing Enter the Gungeon or Death Road to Canada instead.

Passe-Par-Trous
Passe-Par-Trous

Fun game with good to excellent potential at first glance. The game remember me of streets of rogue in it's first year (the game ended up being an absolute indie game hit). I will try the coop later.
I hope this game will continue it's developpement because i easily see it become a really great game with more diverse generation, weapons gameplay and (friendly) npc.

Good points :
The game is oriented toward fun.
Replayability.
Expectations.

Neutral:
Seeing a bit more factions (safe survivor colony/colapsing survivor colony, moonshiner, lonely farms, hiding family, slave market?, saint places, secret shops) and interractions between factions of npcs might really improve the game. (nb: i didn't played enough for this point being a "hard" evaluation point.

Bad points:
Still in early developpement: need more frendly npc's and more diverse generation.
The merchant doesn't sell... he give you his items (strange business model).
The weapons i tested feeled the same and were only differenciated by their stats(slow/fast to recharge, level of damage, time to aim). Giving recoils, charging weapon, more diverse animation, (laser weapons?) ... might add diversity. (i didn't saw all the weapons so not a hard point but after half an hours i tested 12 guns and excepetd the crossbow/bow vs guns, it was a bit dry).

Conclusion: speculative buy but with good premises. The dev just need to flesh the game a bit but the backbone is here. A roadmap may help more buyers to try this game.

PS: This is a very early evaluation, both for the game and me. I will update later.

nice little action roguelike, gives me zombies ate my neighbors vibes while also being from this century and pretty dynamic. liked the dev's last game and this is even better.

The negative reviews about this game are literally true. I didn't want to believe it, but now I feel like I have multiple STDs from how hard this game has raw dogged me.

- Constant enemy aggression leaves little time for exploration and scavenging
- EVERYONE works together to kill you: bandits, cannibals, ninjas, and whatever the hell else spawned on the map. You're the ****bag that no one likes, and this game loves to constantly remind you of it
- Resources are scarce, and unfortunately with the constant swarms of enemies, you can't stockpile (reminds me of a strip club)
- Constant stuttering and lag? Baffling. Utterly absurd...yet present.
- Will I still play this game? Probably, but it isn't worth the $20 in it's current state.

Aerie
Aerie

weeehh tentative yes. The gameplay is really fun but pleeeeeease fix the stuttering and the crashing. It's not just connection issues, I was playing the co-op survival, I crashed one wave, my bf crashed the next.

It's early access so I don't mind it being a buggy piece of shit, otherwise the fact it's borderline unplayable, it's actually pretty damn fun.

Starving Artist
Starving Artist

It's a very good game with a lot of potential. My main issue is that the bandits seem to psychically know when you lockpick or start a boss fight. Also the boss fights are literally everywhere. Also, when you try to fortify something with an active item(i.e. molotovs) handy, you will use the item. And even without the item, you have a chance to make a melee strike.

Outlaw
Outlaw

As of the present build, it's just too buggy to justify the entry price. What's here is really good, and I'm looking forward to playing it if they come through on this game like they did Death Road to Canada, but right now? Hold off unless you have a lot of patience to burn.

RyFieri
RyFieri

Enjoying it so far. Reminiscent of Death Road to Canada, but with just a big random open world. The missions and story definitely add something. Once you learn the weapon systems you'll be able to know which will handle what situations. Definitely not perfect, can't loot all despite the tooltip and sometimes when you try to fortify something you'll just use your throwable item instead of fortifying. At a fun place, even now.

Start game, realize I forgot to to switch from controller to keyboard because it doesn't remember that for some reason. Exit game, double click the controller so it sets keyboard to P1.

Get into game, everything works pretty well and as intended.

share playing player 2 is all kinds of broken, and hoard mode is just boring. Until this game has some form of player 2 that is good, I cannot recommend the game at the current price tag. P2 is why I got this game...

Optimus Prim

Huge potential here.

Pros:

Already a fun game to play with several modes, tons of weapons, monsters, etc
Great mix of building/exploring/scavenging/combat
Great devs, they pay close attention to the community

Cons:

Early Access, buggy (but very playable)
Missing full controller support (for now)
High price point for what you get at the moment, but Death Road to Canada proves it will be well worth it in the end.

TheCrispyDud

Seems like there's something good in here, but a lot of things are buggy/broken. Hotfixes are slow so most likely stuff won't get fixed until a major update. I'm sure it'll be fun later, come back closer to release.

Great game, lots of content, exploring is fun, gunplay is very fun, the pixel art is good looking, the base building is also fun, every character has a back story and a prologue mission, characters are upgradable as are all the weapons in the game. Has good survival elements without them feeling like a chore, has a lot of action. The downsides to me are that multiplayer is (yet) only available in horde mode, the sounds are very unpolished and can get annoying, there are a few bugs, but haven't yet discovered anything game breaking. Loved Deathroad To Canada and I love this game even more. Hope the devs finish it.

The game is very fun to play and I think that the devs have lots to do (bug fixes) but this game has massive potential (You should go to the discord server to keep up to date with updates though because I think the game could dose some mechanics but could also get rid of others), but yeah thanks devs for making this game

[PG]Arf Bishop…

A fun blast of apocalyptic chaos and survival.

It is still in Early Access but I can happily say, having put a few hours in, Im not disappointed in my investment.

Follow this one, each update produces more and more progress in this cannibal slaying adventure and survival game.

The characters are neat and have unique skills and traits.
There are two handfuls of unlockables when it comes to characters and alternate costumes.
There's multiplayer and over all its just a challenging blast.
The lock picking system is a beautiful toss to the old pipe-dream game of the 90s.
dont have a lock pick for a shut home? Does it have windows? Yep. You can do that.

Mihari
Mihari

It eats resources like you wouldn't believe despite its simplistic graphics, which you can't do anything about besides turn down the particle effects. The tutorial bugs out frequently and doesn't recognize commands, making learning how to play difficult if not impossible. I'd like to think my eyesight isn't terrible, I don't need glasses or anything like that. So why is this game such an eyestrain to pay attention to? Everything is way too small. There are "zoom+" and "large UI" settings in the options, but neither of them do anything about the microscopic text and how tiny the characters are on the map. I can't find any fixes for these, so it's pretty safe to say they don't currently exist.

I'm a huge fan of Death Road to Canada, I know these guys are competent and will probably fix a lot of these issues in the future, but I don't deal in probabilities. Until an update is implemented fixing these issues that make the game physically straining to play, I can't recommend this game or say its deserving of your money.

Game launched fine. Could not play game due to game insisting i'm using a controller and there is no way to tell it to forcefully use keyboard. Even plugged in my actual controller and it did nothing.

A 20 dollar game should not have this issue.

Games like Cannibal Crossing make me wish that Steam had an "it depends" option for recommendations.

The concept is good, the core gameplay loop is fun, but there's still a lot of bugs and a lot of polish needed and whether or not this is worth the price of admission is dependent largely on what you're looking for in a game.

I bought it because I liked the idea of an arcade-y, online coop survival game. I learned after the fact that online coop only really works for horde mode. The horde mode is fun but marred by bugs and a lack of focus in comparison to the open world mode. For example, last night I ran a melee build and bought a lightsaber and 40 plates of spaghetti and proceeded to break the entire game by zipping around decapitating dozens of cannibals with dash attacks, causing it to desync so badly that enemies started spawning just 1 at a time with no additional enemies spawning until after each before it had died.

The open world mode itself is also fun, but I didn't really grab the title for single player. Using Steam's remote play in order to use the couch co-op style open world multiplayer reveals a lot of unfortunate design decisions. Trying to loot a box pauses the entire game for every player, which is pretty rough in a game where you're doing a lot of looting. Any sort of inventory management is the same, and trying to clear up my inventory and do base building resulted in the person I was playing with having to just sit there and wait for me, with them unable to even do inventory cleanup of their own in the interim.

Ultimately, right now, if you're really into the single player, open world arcade-y combat, I'd say it's a good purchase. If you're into online coop and enjoy horde mode and roguelike-ish character building then probably wait for it to be half-off. Otherwise, I'd recommend holding off. Put it on Follow or wishlist it and check back on reviews from after release to see if it's still got a lot of bugs/polish issues, then make a decision from there.

I rarely buy full priced games but Cannibal Crossing is an exception due to Death Road to Canada.
The game is enjoyable yet frustrating with bugs, crazy difficulty scaling Days 1-4 is easy, 5-6 sometimes its hard depending on RNG ( AI aggro is random) beyond 7 gets crazy and you just die from lack of ammo, food, black sludge infection and when you run out stamina running and dodging Negatives even if your stamina skills are maxed out. Due to the pacing of the game I have to prioritize on certain skills like dodge, maxing health and stamina recovery in normal mode. There's a lot of bugs and needs more polishing, there are times I still get hit from Boss attacks after I defeat them and I die which is frustrating to start all over . Base building is fun but also takes a lot of resources away if you have to build ammo.

I played 21 hours and I still suck and haven't beaten the game in Normal mode, I almost did after defeating all Bosses, collected all parts but died defeating the Totem on Day 7 or 8 while Negative Wave was Incoming and they all pretty much stacked and stampede my life away right after I beat the Boss..... so yeah It can be more intense and way more frustrating than Death Road.

Nevermind after getting the hang of the mechanics of the game started to feel slightly easier for normal story mode. Haven't tried the other modes yet.

TL;DR
I expected better DR2C but got more boring Enter the Gungeon.

Things that clicked for me:
- The game IS competent. Running, gunning and rolling feels just right. Controls for me without issue (keyboard and mouse), didn't have any problems with fps drops, nor did I encounter any bugs.
- Great characters and funny dialogues (when those happen).
- Weapon upgrading system is easy to understand and fun.
- Skill tree looks interesting, having more things than just boring stat and % boosts.
- Pixel art and animations are very well made.

Things that didn't click with me:
- Music. Music in DR2C was amazing and a big part of its charm. Every single track was memorable and great to hear even on its own. Here music is just ... lame.
- Melee combat feels useless and unsatisfying.
- Looting is tiresome and boring. There is so little loot in a single home, that you need to visit 10 of them to make any progress when it comes to stocking up your inventory.
- Inventory management is a vital part of this game. And it's not fun.
- Building system is baffling to me. In a game where you need to scour half of the city for a single cooked meal, building a base in a single place seems really silly. I'd much rather have a system for building/upgrading a car/truck/trailer, or have an option to quickly blueprint/pack my base. Having cars scattered through the map helps, but unfortunately they teleport back when you reach your destination.
- You can't really build inside/near the houses, and there is no easy way to remove generated structures and furniture (unless I missed it, which is possible).
- You can't see through windows or doors inside a house... just, what? How's that not a thing in a top-down game. Only entering the building reveals what's inside.
- The classic humor and quirkiness of DR2C is such a rare sight ... It is still there, but it's buried pretty deep.
- To the point above, Cannibal Crossing is trying to be serious(-ish) for some reason. Do we really need yet another serious(-ish), open world, crafting having, gun shooting, zombie survivaling early access game? It's like if Saint's Row after the success of The Third went back to being a GTA clone.
- It already feels repetitive.

Such a shame. Really was looking forwards to this game. Will try playing some more, and edit this review if any of my views change.

So far, the game is interesting and fun to play. Hard but fun. Sometimes, the randomness of the maps make food really hard to come by... almost impossible to stay alive but I guess it's part of the price to pay for random map generation.

I bought this game mainly to play with a friend and we were a bit disappointed.

The local coop support is bad. I mean.. I understand that it's local but every time someone loot a crate, the game pause for everyone... every time someone open its inventory, the game pause for every one. It makes the game so clunky and not enjoyable (at least, some games make you both go into your inventory so at least both players can do something).
I feel like for the game to be enjoyable in coop, the devs need to put the story mode in online coop, not couch coop. If they don't want to host the servers, at least let us do it with Hamachi or something like that.

And to add up, playing this game with a controller is a horrible experience in my opinion. I didn't enjoy it at all.

I want to enjoy more of this game in coop. Please, add online story mode.

Developers I enjoy playing this game through frustrations and repeats I love it. My feed back with this game are

1) I was close to ending the game I was in the process at the Labs finished the minion waves BUT the door never opened!! Check all your end scenarios I couldnt trigger the Door to open and end the game.

2) More detail with corruption how to counter that damn annoying face popping up other wise its a good niche to get out of corruption.

3) What in the hell is wrong with the your helpers/NPCS i really dont like how they disappear after a certain amount of time AND MID BOSS FIGHT

other wise i like the game I just hate how i almost finished the game to get only screwed over by the LAB Door not opening and ending to exit the game and redoing the whole thing but i ran out of ammo, corruption screwed me, and helpers are just pointless.

MZ0125

Bought this because I enjoyed DR2C A LOT. Was expecting a DR2C + base building kind of game, but a repetitive buggy ok fighting game.

Still quite a few silly bugs that may mess up your run. Game is quite hard at the beginning, and the base building/collecting/crafting is all thrown out of whack due to the constant massive waves of enemy spawning non-stop. And the co-op experience seems not fluent yet.

It's like it tries to be a more survival like games like dont starve, but ended up stuck in between DR2C kind of simple decisions and the more complicated survival base building games.

Hope this game will improve a lot down the road. It has potential.

Dont get me wrong i like it but its extreamly dificult and rage induceing. i cant even try out the quests or do anything because of constantly being killed. Death by attrition. Fun game really hard to beat solo. The looting feels like PUG-G or Fort Night. Houses with loot. Enemy's drop weapons if they are human or other items if they are zombies. Get as many items as you can early because late game it's harder to get loot, but you do get better tier items after so many in game days.

Cannibal crossing, and no, it’s not a animal crossing parody.
This game is like old arcade space ship 2d shooter where enemies shoot thousand of balls and you need to avoid them, death road to Canada and “ the craziest” movie had a gsngbang on project zomboid and this is what was born after all that sperm spreading around!
It’s a survival game, not just for the hungry bar but for the reason that range guns are the king and ammo are not that much, capisci? You will fight against horde of cannibals, raiders, ninja raiders, bandit, Afro Chinese bandit, animals, strange creatures, strange creatures pet or sex slaves fetish stuff I don’t understand aaaandddd bossessss motherfuckersssss!!!!
It’s that game where when you die you lost every fucking things but it’s funny cause map is random and there are a lot of encaunters, uh you got a choice of I think a dozen of characters and everybody have their own intro and main questssssss so funny bro!
So what are you fucking waiting for? Buy it and stop fucking your gf for 3 monthsssss come on everybodyyyyu

there are some bugs that will cancel out healing entirely. Also, every time I complete the blackjack mission of going into the piggy bank after picking him up from the casino, the missions start cycling and I have to quit and restart the mission. There is also a bug with the distillary that if you keep adding wood into it but don't remove the alcohol, the stack will delete it's self and will only give you a bit of it. There is also a heavy need of leather hides that needs an item to help make more since midgame and further, there is little to no use for leather hides. I'd suggest a machine that converts hides into batteries or hides into cloth? maybe the cloth-o-matic can take batteries OR leather.

This game has so many issues even after a year been released.
The control has issues, the game balance has issues, the upgrades have issues.
The game forces the player to only play certain ways with one or two available strategies.

Save your money, don't waste it here (at least for now).
Wait till the developer fix/upgrade the game to a point when its enjoyable.
Maybe like Death Road to Canada, give it another year or two then the game might become enjoyable.
But as for now, it is not.

after 42 hours, I can tell you this, this game is not worth the money. After 5 hours it's just the same stuff repeated. The replaybility is very low, the mechanism of the game is to ruin the concept of fun in normal game mode. The only positive thing about this game is the sandbox mode, but it is still the same stuff repeated. The upgrade system is the same for all characters. The control is still problematic, the balance of the game is still problematic. The developer should save the money to hire professional game testers before even venture into release the game, whether alppha, beta, or official release.

im loving this game, i saw the devs of DR2C made it and knew i had to get it, its really fun, although being early access comes with its downsides, the helper AI is really bad, sometimes they walk into walls and cutscenes with them can sometimes break, the missions feel like im not truly trying to just survive but also help everyone alive and not supposed to settle down in a base, but other than the stuff i found to not work, the game is great and has a whole lot of potential, with the devs behind DR2C making this i know its gonna be great

I've had one or two game breaking glitches, by day seven it is way to laggy to call comfortably playable due to how much corruption spawns as well as too many enemys spawning, it is an excellent game and I really am impressed it is my new favorite despite the gamebreaking bugs and the lag. The mechanics are great and I really hope to play this one day without the lag.

Fix it.

AmaDeusen

Game is fun and not as bad as people claim but people mostly bought it for online co-op which DOES NOT EXIST!
There is "online co-op" which is for the Horde Mode (tiny map you in the middle and zombies spawn on the outer side you have to defend single POI)

Direct quote from developer about campaign co-op:
"For the main campaign, we shut it off as we didn't have enough testers to handle the scope of it. There's a chance, but we'd need a lot of eyes on the game to do it right."

So until then this goes to shelf as I got my fair share of fun from it. Maybe if this game gets like second wave when people discover it later on, maybe then we will get online co-op.

If you are thinking about it, it is fun to play first few times, mechanics in game are fun but that is it. Every playthrough is the same with minimal changes. Combat is fun, you can level up, etc. but boss fights are the same always in the same spots, mini bossses are always the same on exact same spots so once you discover it the first time its nice but then the element of surprise vanishes.

I would probably wait for a sale to buy this.

If you are looking for a zombie survival game to play with friends in a sandbox, this isn't it. The store page description is actually false advertising; quote "Cannibal Crossing is an action-survival game for 1-4 players, where you explore the randomly generated town of Earlsboro..." The only multiplayer is a base defense mode; no exploring, no scavenging, sitting in one spot. I'm sure the story mode has some good qualities but got a refund because I only got it to play in a zombie survival sandbox, like 7 Days to Die, with friends and not just a base defense game.

Not yet ready for prime time. Still a lot of game freezing that requires you to end the process, too many enemies on the screen causes a truck ton of lag. Could probably been left in the oven to bake for a bit more.

Refunding the game due to buying the game for co-op and it just feels like an incomplete mess. Not only that but the game crashed multiple times before I could even get through the tutorial single player. So, as a whole the game is just unplayable atm. Unfortunate too, because it looked promising. Might buy it again if it goes on sale for 5 bucks, but until then there's many other better games to spend 20 USD on.

From the makers of DRTC comes Cannibal Crossing, a fun little Project Zomboid lite style game. The graphics and design are simple and mostly easy to read, quite colorful, and have a nice design to everything. The sound and music are nice and fit the aesthetic they seem to be going for. Combat is mostly smooth, though there is a bit of clunkiness here and there. The gunplay is satisfying, but with how everything tends to turn into a crazy spammy bullet hell, I can't see how they expect melee to be at all viable outside of a couple enemies here and there. Thankfully it's not hard to keep supplied on ammo once you get your base set up. I do feel like the game is pretty lacking in the content department, though. On the one hand, you have a decent number of different characters, each with their own special abilities, loadouts, and a completely different second build unlocked after you beat the game with them. On the other, the map is very same-y every time you play, with only a handful of different building types thrown around semi-randomly. The game also is pretty pathetic when it comes to the amount of sidequests, with only about 5 or so random "Go and fetch this" or "go and kill that" type outside of the main "escape the area" quests. Mostly you're just running around looking for the other main survivors, since doing their missions is how you get the parts you need to complete a run. The "Negative Horde" event happens waaaay too often. Almost nightly you get swarmed by huge numbers of strong enemies, which is less "difficult" when handled properly, and more "just annoying" since it means you can't really go exploring much. You'll end up fighting waves until almost noon, then you collect and process the loot, rest up and heal, and by the time you're ready to go back out, it's almost night again, meaning you get a few minutes to explore before another horde shows up and you need to hide out.

On another note, the game feels like it could've used a little bit more time in the oven. The inventory system is extremely finicky, particularly item stacking. For example, let's say I have 3 meat in an item stash. I have 5 more in my inventory. Meat stacks up to 10. But if I add the 5 from my inventory into the stash, it makes a 2nd stack of 5. So now two slots in the stash are used up by one stack of 3 and one of 5. But alternately, if I pull the 3 from the stash, instead, it stacks to 8 in my inventory. Then I can put all 8 into the stash in one stack. Why the hell it doesn't automatically stack when adding it in is beyond me. Ammo stacks are even worse and more complicated. It's just obnoxious and adds a ton of time fiddling with inventory instead of actually playing.
Also I've seen a number of strange (though generally minor) bugs. I'm not sure what causes it, but on a couple of occasions the game has gotten unplayably laggy until closed and reloaded (Figured it out, it actually happens after using the flamethrower. Performance gets worse and worse the more I use it until the game is unplayable (Haven't tested other flame weapons)). A big issue is that how much of the meta-game currency you get for permanent upgrades is partially based on how many kills and such you got in a run, but it doesn't save that information if you quit in the middle of a run, so you can kill thousands of enemies, save and quit, reload, finish the run, and the game will say you killed 10 guys and give you a handful of gems instead of what you actually earned. Sometimes the game seems to have a hard time figuring out what tiles should be powered by generators and which shouldn't while base building. I had a quest where upon reaching the boss fight area, the boss never spawned, and the quest disappeared. Reloading the game fixed that one. I've seen the Doctor Who side quest spawn the objective in the side of a rock face, meaning it was entirely impossible to complete. There's an altar you can build that will revive you if you die, and is SUPPOSED to need refreshed if you use up the revive charge, but once I had it revive me essentially for free, since it didn't need to be reactivated after saving me. Another time one of the red charging enemy hit me enough times all at once to instantly take me from full health to dead, and when I respawned I permanently had about 10 of the "stunned" stars rotating around my character that never went away. Ally dodge and taking damage sounds seem to be tied to the character you're playing, so male allies will make female sounds if you're playing a female character, and vice-versa. The game also doesn't seem to be tracking achievements properly, as I've killed some of the bosses a number of times, and yet the game doesn't give me the achievement for beating them.
I expect the dev is going to work on a lot of these issues, especially considering how long they've been continuing support on DRTC.
All-in-all it's a decent game, quite a bit of fun to be had, but hoping for more and more diverse content and for some of the jank to be ironed out.

This comes from some of the same people who were behind Death Road To Canada (DRTC from here on.) Such an awesome game, such awesome devs. I've only gotten a little bit into this game, it is pretty hard actually, which is refreshing. Just like DRTC. This game has much of the same vibe in a way, it's a rogue-like with permanent bonuses. The characters are unique and funny in their own way, the easter eggs are numerous and well done. I bought the game post 1.0 so I can't speak much on their development cycle but I've never seen anything but quality from these guys/gals. I will say this game is far, FAR more generous than DRTC ever was. It's a bit of a welcome addition really. These guys are good at balance though, and even better at baiting you. It's a lot like Project Zomboid in that it's not necessarily the general gameplay loop that'll kill you, it's that insidious greed that keeps you putting yourself in danger that eventually does you in. Well done to the devs for hitting it out of the park again.

A recommendation brought me to this game. What could be better than a hybrid of Project Zomboid and Nuclear Throne? Both are fantastic games in their own right, so this is a no-brainer, right? Wrong.

There isn’t much depth present. I kept trying to convince myself otherwise, that the depth lay in unlocking the upgrades and exploration. I just needed to explore further and delve more into the tech tree. That is not the case; the game is simply shallow. Possessing neither the fast-paced excitement of Nuclear Throne nor the depth, complexity, or robustness of Project Zomboid.

Is the latter a good thing for those that want a simpler version of Zomboid? No. Everything in this game is superficial. There is a skill tree, and it is filled with underwhelming upgrades. There is building, but it is limited and practically pointless. AI teammates? Don’t do anything.

As I’m wavering back and forth between deciding whether this is a mediocre game or a bad purchase, the developer opted to patch in a slew of political pieces. Want to mock Trump? Done. Pride flags? Everywhere. Replace Obama on the Hope picture with a generic white president? Certainly.

If your aim is escapism, skip this game. Political grandstanding and virtue signaling from hack developers trying to generate buzz more from the message than the quality of their work irritate you? Want a good zombie survival game with a tinge of roguelike combined with fast paced combat to sate that zombie slaying craving? Skip this game. Do you have frienemies? Then this will make a great gift.

After reading a number of bad reviews, I still decided to take a chance on it and I am really enjoying this game. I haven't had any problems with it. This game can be quite punishing but every time I die, I want to keep trying again. I only have a couple of minor grips: 1) I wish I could easily tell what items I need to craft things 2) I wish I could skip the beginning intro every time I start over. That gets really annoying. Overall, this game is great and I hope it only gets better.

First review of any game but just wanted to throw some support I love this game ! Fan of Death Road to Canada for years. Only 2 days into playing Cannibal Crossing and it's a must buy! I hope i can get it on my switch deck in a few months because I am addicted. The creators are so good at creating a game where there is a balance of difficulty, strategy, and the most important to me the idea of a real sandbox game where i can always do something different every time ! Best if used with controller in my opinion !

Game came out but it has pretty bad bugs like forcing an infinite ammo flamethrower into your hands and not letting you use your inventory or swap weapons when the menace (miniboss) that is immune to fire also spawned next door and for some reason counts as part of the miniquest to kill everything that spawns with that flamethrower. Fine, I can work around this- except the flamethrower just lags the whole game so badly after a while that my top of the line PC can't handle it. The UI is also affected by the slowdown, so even saving and exiting takes forever.

It took two hours of saving and quitting to have the game think I killed the menace when I really just killed its first form multiple times because it respawned for some reason. Also didn't track half my boss kills. This is just a really buggy game that still needs more time to bake. Scrapping weapons is also locked behind building a base, but it's really easy to build a few turrets and snooze through the attacks in normal mode. The beginning is too low power but not threatening enough, getting higher tier goodies seems to only happen off time, and no part of the map is more dangerous than any other.

This review has gone on too long. I think they lost what made DRtC interesting, and it's a no.

After playing, I admitted that this was a pretty good game for an early access title; the questline bugs, glitchy respawns, braindead A.I., frame drops from enemy spawns, finicky use of resources, and lack conveyance for what the final quest requires you to know and have at your disposal to complete it were akin to other early access zombie survival games like the Forest. Imagine my surprise when I realized this was a "finished" game.

This game is screaming "my god left me unfinished" while crawling around making pop-culture references and trying to funny like it's big bro.
Let me explain.

Cannibal Crossing was made by the same people who made "Death Road to Canada". A great title that tests your resource management, topdown shooter skills, risk vs reward judgement, and perseverance all while being funny as hell during a zombie apocalypse road trip. This game carries over the hilarity and shooter looter aspect of that game but sticks you in one town with the goal being to complete quests given to you by survivors while racing against the clock to escape as each day strengthens the hoard until they are unstoppable. Sadly, while you are out there fighting the hoard of zombies, be prepared to fight against the glaring bugs as well.

Bugs range from minor graphical errors on corpses and bosses respawning if killed too far from their spawn point up to game breaking bugs like my screen going completely white after respawning and another where I couldnt complete the game because it had spawned enemies and their projectiles at such a rate that frames dipped into the single digits. After dying and respawning at base to try again, I found that the escape quest had neither failed nor succeeded and there was no other way to trigger it again. The enemy spam frame rate drops wouldn't be an issue if they didnt become that much more likely as the game progresses; enemies gain more projectile variants as the days go by so that by the time you reach an escape/hoard mission, the enemies that swarm you all fire and....frames....slow...to...a...crawl. x

The game loves to make you believe its a zombie survival where you save survivors and build a team but its just a factory builder where you complete enough survivor quests to trigger one of three survive the hoard escape quests. These survivor quests are not unique or interesting and all boil down to three part intervals of 1. find a survivor who will follow you for half a day 2. go to their first quest location to find out where the second quest location is and 3. get to the second quest location where a normal situation turns into a giant mutant monster fight out of nowhere....rinse repeat. If you don't reach the boss fight within that half a day, the survivor you found will despawn back to your base and you will have to face the boss alone. The worst offense was when I had passed a bank earlier in my run, I found fast travel point and used the bank to travel to to get further up the map, this triggered an event showing a survivor and felt reminiscent of random events from other games (it wasnt, it just failed to load the trigger before. Fast travel "reloaded" the area). When I talked to him he had been thrown out and spoke of needing to make a withdrawal so naturally I tried entering the bank. This spawned three large mid-bosses that were each deadly and bullet spongy. After killing them I realized that I was wrong and they were not the boss he needed and instead should have followed his marker half way across the city so I could find another marker on the other side of the city so I could try to make his withdrawal only to have a giant monster pop out for me to fight...

Looting in this game is like playing a matching game that doesnt want you to enjoy it; get two pistols that match and combine them to make a better pistol. find or make two better pistols to make an even better pistol. By better I mean it does more dmg and probably has a bigger magazine. Crafting and resources barely makes sense as well. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the meat I had been cooking into meals to eat were actually a rare resource essential for the respawn system in this game...on the same note the other component leather is highly underutilized unless for this specific purpose instead taking a backseat to cloth. Cloth being used for almost everything and is also scarce until you get your factory of a base up and running.

Comparing this game to death road to Canada does not feel fair. I see a lot of reviews saying the game has potential, but that's what should be said about a game still in early access. The signs of an early access game are all there but they strut this around like a finished product.
Pros:
-fun to shoot "cannibals"
-plenty of looting
-random generated maps
-classes that change spawn in location as well as initial loadout

Cons:
-Bad A.I.
-Crafting needs tuning
-bosses are bullet sponges in a game where ammo can be hard to find
-quests feel very identical
-bullet hell late game in a zombie survival?
-early beta level bugs

wait for a sale or updates

Radiant
Radiant

An arcade zombie survival game experience.

Pros:
There's base building, crafting, lots of characters with a lot variety, a huge map, neat side quests, control feel responsive and tight, every weapon and character feels powerful, and lots of unique bosses. All of what's currently in game feels balanced too. Nothing over powered or really objectively better then everything else.

Negatives:
There's not much here right now and what is here is a little buggy. Everything is stable, playable, and fun. But, there's some definite underlying performance issues. I couldn't seem to replicate it though consistently. The more characters on screen, more bullets flying, and just overall more movement the more the engine would struggle; However, sometimes i'd have 100s of bullets and characters running around and it would be just fine. Then strangely wandering through an empty woods the game would potentially struggle. Also, The multiplayer is fun, but is limited to only 1 horde defense game mode.

With some more support, some (hopefully) minor bug fixes, proper multiplayer, and a little more content this has the potential to be a fantastic game.

What's here now is fun and I definitely got my money's worth. In 20 hours, i've only beaten normal mode once. After multiple repeat attempts.

[spoiler]The ending is incredibly anticlimactic. You have kill multiple moderately difficult bosses at varying parts of the game to collect pieces of a helicopter to fly out of the map. Once you beat enough bosses, collecting enough pieces of the helicopter and after bringing them to some army soldiers to repair it, you get to fly the helicopter. Which would be great but to get to this point you have to pretty much finish every map objective. Making staying in that match any longer pointless. There's not even a final boss encounter. You just bring everything to the army, fly the helicopter, and end the game. I don't know what I expected, but it wasn't just gameover.[spoiler/]

Fantastic game for the price, loved Death Road and love this so far. Tons of content and great gameplay. Just wanted to leave a review since I don’t feel like the current rating is accurate and it almost deterred me.

Re: the negative reviews about coop- yes it would be great to have the main campaign multiplayer, but the dev clearly states the multiplayer is horde mode only for the time being. I would love coop to be added, but the game is still amazing and worth it at the current state + price.

I desperately want to like this game. The game curve is great. The combat feels wonderful. But they make the wave attacks far too frequent. You just don't get to play the game. Speaking of which, the game functions flawlessly until around day 15, after which it completely collapses into a zero frame rate train wreck. Very minor rebalancing to prevent lag out, and allow you to actually play the game would make this a top tier game. As it is you mostly spend the entire game rebuilding wooden barricades until the game lags out so bad you lose

I really want to like this game but the balance seem all over the place.
I just had a really good run but it was ruined when I started a boss that spawned way to many adds for me to handle. So I ran away but the game kept spawning more mobs when I have half the map away from the boss.

My main complaint to the devs would be horrible friendly AI. Those bastards get stuck in every possible obstacle they encounter. Making "allies" fight the boss is a challenge of its own especially, considering that every boss fight ends with unskippable cut scene where they give you a walkie-talkie to summon their stupid asses. Base building is great and all, but try using anything, when those little pricks are running around and blocking/pushing you. The game is still great, so I give it "4/5 terminators"

1. The in between runs don't help much to win the next run, they are lackluster.
2. The in between run upgrades are EXTREMELY limited.
3. Leveling up doesn't do much, weapons or character.
4. Lack of depth.
5. Game play gets extremely stale extremely fast.
6. The base building mechanics are locked behind item drops which are few and far between.
7. This game is worth half of what they are asking.

Immense potential, but there are definitely some wrinkles to iron out. Before my limited criticisms, I would like to note that Cannibal Crossing is still fun, but you should approach this game as though its in early access.

1) Fairly certain I'm running into a memory leak after around an hour of playtime in a single session. Massive performance issues during horde nights near my base.
2) 'Combat Areas' for bosses feel extremely small, and its fairly easy to despawn some of them by just playing normally.
2) The skill tree feels clunky and heavily melee slanted. Could be my own ignorance but nothing feels cohesive.
3) The AI is actually bad and sorta just tries taking a direct route, even if there's an obstacle in the way.

All that said, its an ambitious game and I understand the issues it currently has. I desperately want this game to improve and I would buy it 5 times just to support Rocketcat. Death Road to Canada has been a go-to for my wife and I for like 6 years now and I know Cannibal Crossing can get there.

After beating one "story mode" play through, its fun at first but becomes really mediocre and stale after you know what to do. Leveling up isn't very impactful to gameplay, they are just basic number go up skills or health regen, with a handful that seem necessary to make it through (looking at you dodge roll skills that make your dodge roll an actual dodge roll). Bosses are bullet hell machinations. The base building aspect is very lackluster and gathering the materials to build an actual base with significant investments into defense is a waste of time versus just trying to make it out alive. The character roster is also bland and poorly thought out. There's quite a few bugs and issues, sometimes quests do not advance correctly, or start correctly, the flamethrower absolutely makes my game slow down to a crawl for no reason requiring to quit and restart the game.
I could imagine this being fun with a group of friends IF THERE WAS AN ONLINE STORY COOP MODE (i knew it DID NOT have this feature when i bought it) but the only online mode is base defense which is already just a snooze fest.

TL;DR
Neat Idea with Subpar Execution.

Captain_Cheezus
Captain_Cheezus

The core gameplay loop in story mode is heavily focused on base building, if that isn't interesting then look elsewhere.

You don't get much guidance on how to actually proceed through the game past the tutorial on how to walk around. You get very little guidance past learning how to walk and shoot, you have an ultimate ability you won't use for a while because you'll die before you unlock it. If you just drop in you'll run in circles dying to random mini bosses that spawn, enemies mobbing you at night, the real bosses killing you because you're ill equipped because you weren't prepared for an extended fight. The new player experience is a rough one without meta game knowledge which can lead to a very grating experience. The function of some stations you can build aren't explained well in favor of quippy flavor text which can lead to wasted time and lost resources because of your ignorance to how some mechanics work.

The actual act of looting containers is very finicky and annoying. It's not fully related to your character's proximity or fully to the mouse hovering over it so you have to move close and put the mouse on it multiple times to loot an empty box. the hitboxes on bosses aren't particularly great and can lead to you running out of ammo while you fight them because your shots don't connect.

If you do get the game, after the first few in game days (namely after the first negative horde that you need to build a base to defend against) the game will run ridiculously poorly because of all the sludge the negatives leave around the map. I've had the game freeze up during base attacks and just from walking around my crafting stations that i placed butted up to each other. The spike in enemy spawns after the first five is days makes it harder to move around the map doing quests and kills frames with the bullet hell style of combat.

All in all, the game needs to get optimized or changed up so most computers can run the game at even the bottom end of playable frame rate, the on-boarding of new players needs to get smoothed out, the difficulty scaling may need to get toned down to alleviate some of these issues.

Funt-Bunter
Funt-Bunter

A perfectly executed zombie roguelike, if you can get passed the graphic style which makes the game seem more forgiving than it is. Satisfying UI and mini games aswell as smooth gameplay with crazy depth and variation in play-style. The game is also extremely challenging in the nightmare modes and quick deaths can be frustrating but can almost always be put down to being unprepared or not paying attention.
Alot of the bad reviews are people who were expecting online co-op but its splitscreen/local I was aware of this beforehand and I was in NO WAY disappointed with this game, nor was I expecting to enjoy this game half as much as I did.

Just based off of the developers of death road to canada this title is very half baked and just generally feels like it isnt trying at all.

DR2C is hilarous, the events and characters are very memorable and provides that "Hey ive got a goofy story about how i got 4 jojo characters to Canada" Where Cannibal crossing provides an extremely stale and boring experience from the get go, there isnt any witty writing, just half baked joke establishments. the entire town feels stale and empty and simply exists to loot for the gameplay. All of the playable characters lack personality and stakes except "oh no, zombies"

The gameplay is extremely generic base building/crafting/gathering/literpgelements/etc. you've seen it before. Gather, build, attempt to complete your goal before dying. The melee and gunplay just feel awful, Ever get an infinite cleave weapon in DR2C and just go HAAAAAAAMBONEY with max stats? not here, it doesnt feel even pretend satisfying even with max tier weapons. The boss design is rather neat, taking a bite off of Enter the Gungeon, which i enjoyed if i didn't have to spend experience to get a normal dodge roll smiley face.

For the price go buy death road to canada, its a much better, and realized product i feel. this just feels like a cash grab afterthought and its sad.

Good game, but needs some work. Some controls are slightly annoying (like closing some menu screens says to use right click and then even spamming R click doesn't close it straight away).

Not refunding because from looking at DRTC, I feel confident that they will continue to update and give love to the game as they did before.

Best way to describe it in its current state is like a Lite Project Zomboid, has a great base to become even better.
