Fun game, I remember waiting for this to come out yet somehow I forgot to give a review for it. Has a few different elements to it with many options tied into that. It does work well on the Steam Deck too, but I found the controls a little bit of a pain...but I am also getting old and my hands do not work as well as they used to.

Good blend of a strategy game, angry birds style game, and a tower defense game all put together as one. Campaign is a fun play through along with the two DLCs. Co-op is kind of useless because one player controls most of the attacks and spells while the other just controls a hero that becomes too weak.

Light, colorful, with an interesting update to the old formula of similar games -- but all content is locked until you progress far enough in the campaign.

For this reason I cannot recommend this game.

Well, I dislike this game, but still give it a positive review because of:
+ Works well, feels polished
+ Has visual style
- Cringy jokes/dialogues
- Horrendous 5 star rating system like in mobile games
- Misleading title?

I thought this game was almost purely about building castles/towers, but it isn't. First few missions of campaign are about crossbow shooting and running around with a hero without building of anything whatsoever. Moreover, your castle can only fire from one undestructible crossbow. Also, there is a weird troops management: you buy troops which are automatically uncontrollably go to an enemy castle without going into it, they just go backwards when they reach it. Hero which you can fully control just can't get into it either. I find it really stupid and illogical.

tl;dr:
Game is decent, but not my cup of tea.

This game was awesome, to bad the multiplayer was either none existent or if you did get a match you start with nothing, like level 1 on single player. Anyways the single player is still well worth it. I've never played a game like this in my decades of pc gaming. I wish they would make a part 2. This game is fun as it gets. 10/10. You should let people play single player while they wait for a multiplayer match. Rare gem.

TLDR: Dated boring game in which you have to capture the flag and defend your flag in a Tug of War using a ballista mechanic similar to Angry Birds. Hybrid mechanics are clumsy on Xbox360 pad.

A unique genre blend that combines elements of tower defense, artillery, lane pushing and very mild platformer, strategy and RPG elements. Sounds like fun? Because it is!

Also: Most of the time you can actually pick and choose which elements of the game you want to favor so you can mainly play in the style you prefer. And all that fun made by a small studio - I'm amazed. And I think they should get more of our support and our money.

So - I really love genre mix-ups like this one and I think you too should give it a try! Enjoy!

This game is great.
You start out spending a lot of time building a castle. Then battle by send out troops, fire at the enemy from your castle, and manage spells. Like Angry Birds but far better.

Until it turns into a totally different game for no reason.
Suddenly it becomes a horrible wannabe "Warrio platformer" battle game. No reason other than just because. Horrible fight mechanics, bad combo timing abilities, horrible visibility with stacked troops becoming a pixel mess that you can't begin to counter attack.
Why?

The campaign is nothing special story-wise, but the characters are awesome. It's all pretty light-hearted and that makes it really fun. The gameplay is enjoyable and some choices of weaponry are quite ridiculous (in a good way!).
It's nothing like classic tower defense games, but that's what makes it great. Given how cheap it can be, there's no reason to not give it a shot if you're even remotely enticed by the trailer. It might be six years old, but it's still pretty awesome.

Also, all the music is by Waterflame, so if you've ever played the ancient flash game Age of War, you're in for a treat.

right off the bat it's trying to be 3 games at once and kinda fails at being any of them
you can kinda build your own tower but from what i can tell anything past 1 of any kind of room. doesn't do anything, other games give you limited recourse. Why not make it so each knight room auto spawns a knight every BLANK amount of time. Letting the player build different castles and try new things when playing the same levels over again
Most things are time sensitive and swapping from spawning soldiers, to spells, to balista is clunky. It's the scroll wheel
It fails at being a tower building game cause nothing really matters past the 1st of a kind of room
It fails at being an army game cause your soldiers are weak as hell and you don't even need them to win. They walk back and forth with no way to control, ohhh you made it to the enemy gate time to walk back. You also can’t rally them to hero or hold to charge.all you do is click to spawn and pick what kind.
It fails at being a tower defense game because you can't build or upgrade things that actively protect you
4/10
I really wanted to like this but the entire thing just shouts mobile game

Not sure exactly why but I'm loving it. Will definately play it right through to the end of every campaign. It has that dungeon keeper quality of having a base that you built while also having troops and other implements that you can deploy against an enemy force. Another huge benefit to me is that it runs perfectly on my potato of a computer and has a very charming atmosphere, story, narration, etc.

Highly recommend to anyone who just wants to crush some time with some fairly casual and satisfying fun :)

Awesome game! It takes the best elements of Angry Birds, games where you customize your own units and abilities, build your own structure (castle), and an upgrade system that's as simple as paying in-game gold to do so! The campaign was fun with some nice sprinklings of humor.

For those considering getting the mobile versions, keep in mind they're called Castlestorm: Free To Siege because it follows the freemium/free-to-play model. It's free to download, there's a 1-time payment to remove ads, get a weekly cache of consumables, but the game does have 2 other types of in-game currencies. Gems are also used to upgrade you stuff, while Pearls can be traded in for more Gold and/or Gems. Just pay more money for the Steam version (or, wait for the usual sale)

I started playing this game on the X Box 360 and have always loved it. The amount of effort that went into this game has definitely payed off, from the music made by Water Flame (The same guy that made the CastleCrashers music) to the story made by the writers. there is no time that you will be playing this game and not having fun. 5/5 Stars for CastleStorm.

It has some great ideas and combines game types that I enjoy. However, the execution is just not there. Switching between your hero, hero powers, ballista, and deploying soldiers is just clunky. Furthermore, you don't need to use all three to even win.

TLDR

CastleStorm it's all fun and engaging until you step into the viking realm and you learn to swear as if godzilla is trying to chew off your head while playing angrybird in a tower defense game. What did i get myself into?!

Non-TLDR

CastleStorm (CS in short) is developed and published by Zen Studios. The PC version was released on 29 July 2013. It is also available on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Switch, Wii U, Xbox 360 & Xbox One. According to Metacritic (https://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/castlestorm) it has:

    • A Metascore of 73 from 8 critic reviews
    • An average user score of 7.7 from 67 ratings

Does this remind you of Angry Bird? Combine it with heroes, some wacky game modes, funny conversation between the characters, some funny units and the option to build your own castle. Hmm, All of this seems to be the ingredients for a successful product right? On the surface yes but beneath the surface lies a sinister monster waiting to chomp your head off *muahahaha*

Story

The campaign follows Sir Gareth who goes to battle against the Vikings to recover a stolen gem and bring peace to the realm.

CS is a 2D projectile game, similar to angrybird which is set in a medieval world; where dragons, gryphons, rock golems exists. Build your castle, select your ballista arsenal + magic spells + soldiers and annihilate your enemy castle. That's it.
CS offers:

1) Single player

    • Campaign
    • Skirmish
    • Survival
    • Hero Survival

2) multiplayer (local and internet)

    • versus
    • Survival
    • Hero Survival

There are 3 difficulty modes: casual, normal and hard. The single player campaign offers 10 kingdom chapters and 4 viking chapters. Each chapter can have different amount of missions. The total missions available for the kingdom is 38 and 22 for the vikings. I did not play the multiplayer so i can't comment on this aspect of the product.

Controls, Audio, Visuals

Controls: WASD keyboard and mouse. You will be using A LOT of your mouse roller switching between the ballista, hero/spells and units.

Visuals: It's 2D animated characters and objects. It's bright and colorful and there's no blood/gore.

Audio: You only get voice narration at the beginning and at the end of the campaign. Other than that, its only 1 music. Every unit, ballista arsenal, hero/spells has feedback sound. There's a lot of explosion and ARGG sound..

Mechanics

The missions in the campaign can range from kingdom defense, hero survival, annihilate/capture your opponent's flag and etc. What's important to note is there is:
1) Primary objective
2) Bonus objective
3) Accuracy
4) Difficulty

If you fulfill the 2 objective with a decent accuracy and play on hard difficulty, then you will net yourself 5 stars. That's the max stars you can collect for a mission. Every mission you complete will net you gold. Gold is used to upgrade your castle buildings, castle ballista, spells/hero and soldiers. The max level for each item is 10. In total, you will spend more than 1 million gold if you want to upgrade every single item in the game.

You control your ballista manually with your mouse. If you can perform over 7 kill streaks, you will enter into a rampage mode where you can shoot your ballista arsenal unlimited for a short duration.

You switch between ballista, spells/hero, units category with the mouse roller and then using 1,2,3,4,5 keys to select the respective items in the category. This can feel clunky during messy/heavy fights.

My personal thoughts/My Summary

Long story short, CS gameplay seems innovative and fun. It's engaging and pretty challenging in the first few hours. All that changes when you move over into the viking's campaign. A difficulty spike happens that will leave you fuming over the cheap, unfair design of the product. Your opponent is able to summon multiple high level units within seconds. This happens in all of the viking campaign. The only solution to overcome this cheap difficulty is to go back to the kingdom campaign and grind for more gold - so that you can upgrade the necessary item(s) to get past the viking campaign. This becomes the only solution if you want to earn 5 star for all campaign, including those pesky bonus objective for certain missions.

So in other words, it's a punishing experience to obtain 5 star. The final boss fight, while it looks interesting & intense but its all a cheap spongy design leaving a bitter taste. Bullet sponge is one thing. EPIC bullet sponge is another thing. STUPENDOUS EPIC bullet sponge is pure stupidity. *spits*

I have thrown hundreds of spears, mjolnir, bombs, boars, cast lighting, stone and even shoot laser beams in the viking's boss face. I threw wolfs, viking warriors, bears, dragons at it. 1 swing. All dead. Does all this sound ridiculous to you?

So, all that journey with Sir Gareth was meaningless. All that recruitment drive is useless. All you need is ONE stupendous epic nuclear bomb to send this fucking viking boss to oblivion. fuck the cheap sponge design. There are so many ways to make an interesting final boss but they have to resort to sponge concept. Do i still need to grade this product? What a let down. tsk tsk tsk.

So, on the scale of 0 - 10, my personal rating for Castlestorm is an awesome ridiculous crappy unbreakable stupid sponge that wont break even if ultraman and godzilla were to step on it. stomp on it. bite it. crap on it! A 5/10!

Some hero you are *kicks Sir Gareth*

Naughty Pup

This is a nice little Defense game, based on the flash game Age of War.
In addition to sending Troops, you also control a ballista, cast spells, and controlling heroes. Instead of the evolution concept, there are upgrades you can purchase as you earn gold in the campaign.

Short and funny. I would recommend if you are a fan of Defense games.

Castlestorm is a nice little game with a fantasy setting and a decent cartoony look. There's also some humor between levels and I think the jokes land fairly well.

As for gameplay, it basically combines classic flash games like Age of War & Crush the Castle, and it has a soundtrack by Waterflame.

Also I've played this game on Xbox 360 too, and the controls on PC are MUCH better than on a controller.

I just finished the campaign and am currently progressing through the DLCs and should I say this game is a must buy to anyone who is into tower defense and strategy games. This game has a mix of tactical strategy and combat which is well served with a pleasing music fitting the aesthetic of the medieval landscape of kingdoms. Castlestorm as the name suggests goes with just one simple rule - storm the opponents castle and wreak havoc to it , thats all. As simple as it gets, the game does have a couple of side missions to keep you occupied throughout your journey. Speaking of occupied, this game sucked me in as I just couldn't count the number of hours put into this beautiful masterpiece. Being a casual gamer with limited time to play, I just couldnt imagine the number of times I had the sweaty controller issue owing to extended hours of gameplay (PS. I played with my Xbox controller and trust me it works like a gem with the controller).

The story is nothing to write about as the main focus is solely on the gameplay and the beautiful graphics to top it all off. I would recommend players to try out the Normal Difficulty which is easy to pick up as long as you are alert and are able to strike hard right from the word go.

I just have one more DLC to complete as I sign off in style with a smile on my face and a gleeful ''Recommend it'' from my side for anyone who is into tower defense and strategy games. Oh !!! And guess what.... I just finished the game and I should say its worth every second of your time :)

I played this game at times when I just wasn't able to use a keyboard. I only have about 6 hours spent ingame but this is a very enjoyable game, for me it's kind of a sleeper hit or something like that. Great visuals, a lot of personality and good design in general. Also perfect for playing with a controller.

I've not really played anything else of this genre so this is just my opinion without any other references to go by. The fortress VS fortress artillery part reminds me a bit of Worms 2 but that's a bit of a stretch.

It's a shame this game never got a sequel.

Gem, outdated, get dlc, golden for 2-D tower+sending minions game. Flexibility with building castle, pretty hefty campaign, gimped but still viable coop mode for survival, potentially highest game ending feat of the enemy - Specific viking boss who pulls a rock out of his butt and tennis racket smacks it at cho' castle and nukes it if you're not fast enough to repel it with the anti-projectile skill. First player controls castle+spawning minions, second player controls a stronger -hero like minion, who if blocks correctly, takes 0 damage, but can't attack stronger units haphazardly. It's very particular in that regard, but this game is great. OLDEN BUT GOLDEN BB. Played the xbox version and I loved it so much that I got all the dlc that I haven't touched yet and it's very silly, goofy lego like humor. The game itself is awesome and straight forward. I'm sure nobody plays it anymore, but it's one of those games that you like the feeling of - plus it has the same exact feel of music as Age of War, who doesn't want to JAM to that track eh? DAAA dun dun...DADADUNDUN - *charges into battle as a caveman against plasma marines and high tech futuristic weaponry* Each campaign is split into its own instance, meaning your castle must be separate from previous campaigns, resetting in level and power, giving you the chance to try new units re-skinned and partially different at times. Fun stuff.

Doomykins

An utterly delightful mix of tower defense, Angry Birds, mortar firing, light base building and a love of Warcraft 3 aesthetics, CastleStorm is an indie game that hits well above its weight class. It's a pretty simple pick up and play game, good for marathon sessions spent trying to clear everything or a few quick rounds daily until you've exhausted the campaign and challenges.

In CastleStorm you take on the role of Sir Skips Leg Day, a cartoonish knight who must stop the Vikings of Stereotypia from breaking all his stuff. You use a massive rapid fire ballista to do that as well as summoning your own armed forces of quirky, sarcastic runts to battle. Options for additional projectiles specializing in single target, area denial, castle demolishing, strong hits or other unique features as well as cooldown limited spells that do the same and rosters of varied units offer a lot of variety in dismantling your enemy's castle. You can even warp a hero in for a shlocky 2D beat 'em up approach to things for a limited amount of time. What works well here are the options available to the player, encouraging you to use whatever works and feels the best to get the job done as all that matters is the win, as well as the very casual fun feeling of the game. There isn't a need for absolute precision to win and the challenges are optional, which is good because some are horribly clunky, especially if they focus on controlling the hero in combat.

I'm a big fan of games that give you lots of options and don't restrict your choices from there on. CastleStorm can take a little while to get there but once you've got everything unlocked and build your own castle it's a pretty unique little take on the usual tower defense stuff. Trying everything out is a good time though there are The Optimal Set-Ups and once you figure them out it can feel like auto-pilot to the end. A very pleasant auto-pilot but a solved game all the same.

For $10 CastleStorm by itself is a great buy. The DLCs aren't particularly great, mostly retreading the same stages with a slightly different cast and reskinned projectiles. Might be decent if you can get the bundle on sale but not the best value even for $2-3 a pop unless you get absolutely addicted to the base game and need more. CastleStorm: I liked Warcraft 3 too!

SBrind
SBrind

Castlestorm doesn't really fit into standard gameplay archetypes - it draws from quite a few different areas and comes up with something a bit novel, and which is a lot of fun.
You get a ballista, troops, dragons, trolls, exploding apples, and a homing eagle (if this is giving you a "worms" vibe here you wouldn't be wrong).
There is a nice little (predictable) story, and some entertaining little quips (which you can skip once you've read them), games don't take too long, and the visual style is pleasing without being especially demanding on your machine.
The only minor downside is there's occasionally a little bit of grind needed to level up to progress.
(Oh and if you're after the multiplayer achievements, you'll need to arrange someone to play via the forums as there is no active playerbase)

TL;DR:
Fun game, not expensive, worth a play.

This is a weird mish-mash of a game. It entertained me casually for about 6 hours in total before it ran completely thin. About a third of that playtime was pretty tedious.

There are really 4 games here rolled into one, all of them being weak, and the sum total being less than the sum of its parts. You've got a castle builder, but not a very good one; an Angry Birds style castle destroyer, but not a very satisfying one; a DotA-style "send the troops across" with nothing particularly interesting; and a platformer-style "send the hero into battle" with lacklustre combat.

Combined, it's a bit of a mess and it's hard to juggle all aspects of the game. This contributes to some balance issues which spoil the fun. Random levels are ultra difficulty, and more difficult settings can be gruelling, because the AI can juggle all these aspects in a way that you can't (half of this is battling with the UI, it's not just a multitasking problem).

Ultimately I was persuaded to buy this because of the basic concept of "build your castle, knock down theirs". It vaguely delivered on this promise, but I'm left feeling pretty frustrated and unsatisfied. If that is what has drawn you as well, I'd recommend against the game.

I bought this game because it used to be on the App Store. It is just the same as when I played it when I were young. Only now it is a point and click using the mouse and time to get use to the spells and units.

For user who trying something new and stumble upon this game. Then without bias, the game has a common hero storyline. Fun and easy shooting mode, and a little bit of grinding to upgrade your units to try on hard mode. There are side quest as well just for if you are sick of shooting arrows a lot and you want to be a hero to slay enemy units instead. Other than that if you want to try building a castle of your own, you can modify your castle and strategical put the important room protected. It is castle modify, summon units, spells and hero that will lead you to victory. Have fun!

A sort of hybrid between an artillery/destruction game and the old Footman Wars custom game type from Warcraft 3: you have a castle that you design outside of battles, with an artillery piece that you use to fire various ammo types upon the enemy castle, but at the same time you accumulate resources to spend on troops to fight enemies, bash in the enemy gate, and steal their flag.

The presentation is great, with well-considered art direction and sound design, the campaign is meaty and varied enough to keep things fairly fresh throughout, and the gameplay itself stays fun even after a dozen hours of play.

I've played this game on android a few years ago and loved it. This is just annoying, but the game is balanced on having 5 unit, projectile and spell types mainly because that was how much space an android screen had at that time. This is ok, but to change your troops you need to edit your castle, and see the previous sentence.

From gameplay perspective the android background really makes a bad effect: it was intended to be a game played casually time to time: this means that the upgrades get exponentially more expensive as you progress, but you basically need to improve only a few of them if you know what you do so its just a wasted opportunity.
I upgraded the treasury and prison to have more gold, upgraded the buildings, the units/spells/projectiles I use / needed for challenges for lvl5 (which is cheap), and put the rest into the broken things of the faction. This is a really boring way, since the 2+2 campaings use totally different units and upgrades so you need to start again 1-3 times. What is even worse that there are no daily events or any other game mode, so you don't actually have any opportunity to use them once you complete a campaign 100%.
Oh, and upgrading units is mostly pointless: there are only a few that you'll even use, and only on certain maps: it is 100x times easier to destroy the enemy castle than take the flag, and the maps without enemy castle usually spawn super powerful enemies or you can only control a single hero. It is really hard to keep them alive for them to do anything. The only exceptions are the flying units, the artillery (they come in handy on certain missions/challenges), and the lowest tier unit of your faction for some cannon fodder.

It might seem like I hate the game, but those were all the negatives. The game does everything else well that the genre (castle defense) allows. The story and characters are not much, but livid and add to the game. I especially liked the humour, I assume mainly this is because I'm Hungarian just like the developers. The differences between the factions is minor but cause significant gameplay changes, especially the projectiles. The map designs are marvellous, the graphic style is consistent and enjoyable. The game uses physics (not perfect physics, but hey), and the controls are really well-made, so it is really enjoyable to shoot.

I haven't tried out the multiplayer mode, but the survival mode was not my kind of bread: it was basically "how many headshots can you make before making 4-5 mistakes or the new wave will be physically impossible".

Why do I still recommend the game? Because castle defense games are awesome, and the ones as good as this is all vanished with the flash game era.

Look, I LOVED the game. But it was too short, I wanted to restart and play again but differently (Because there are so many play styles) There is no reset and I destroyed the levels with my high level gear and hero's. PLEASE be careful when making important choices because they are Permanent.
