It's not a bad game by any means, it just feels pretty limited. If you love cats, go for it. If you don't or are ambivalent where felines are concerned, get Stardew Valley or any of the farm-likes that are breeding like rats... or possibly cats.

Deplorable Nora
Deplorable Nora

It's Harvest Moon/Stardew Valley/Story of Seasons/Rune Factory with cats, if you like any of those games and want another one with different love interests and story you'll like this.

8/10 - Great indie Cat Life simulator?

This is a simple cute and fun game, fun to play, easy to learn a lot to do and very little glitches! Overall an amazing time.

A cheaper version of "Stray" if you can't afford it.

Ok! Ok! I promise to write a more proper review later when I have played more, its enjoyable on a lot of its own merits :D

This is a fun game where you get to be a cat and fulfill many various tasks, very similar to Animal Crossing. The "quests" aren't very difficult, although some may take some time. It is very easy to spend several "days" playing, especially once you realize there is no penalty for not sleeping! I have enjoyed it and the various options for upgrades in skills helps keep it playable for more than the initial short time to complete the basic quest.

null
null

An overall good game. Mechanics are very generic and basic, but they are tied into cat theme and that just works.
100% completion of this game is not super difficult, but insanely boring and burns too much time without rewarding you.

Combat(5/10)

Don't expect combat to feel good, because it's clunky. If you want to get all achievements for this game, you will have to master it.

Movement feels odd and animations are basic, but combat is "action" and encourages you to try to evade attacks. Evading is fairly difficult to pull off reliably and on top of that because attack animations are not amazing and you are locked in place while attacking (same goes for enemies). This is passable if you treat is as a tactical action combat where you spam attack and reposition yourself every few attack.

For most of the game you can do just that, because the game doesn't lean onto combat too hard.

I found a way to evade somewhat reliably (~90% rate), but a certain mine in this game is filled with strong monsters that take 6-7 hits to kill, are fast (makes my method take very long) and normally end up attacking in swarms. That makes each stage (out of 100) take a few minutes.

Also, hitboxes on some enemies are weird. They like to move on top of you, at which point they can hit you, but you can't hit them.

Progression(9/10)

As basic as the core game is, it rewards the work you do quite well. There are abilities to upgrade, skills to unlock, cosmetics to earn, factions to beat. I will not go into this too much, but I think progression and reward systems in general are great.

Gameplay - Core(8/10)

You can attack, prowl/pounce and gather. It's as basic as it gets and yet it works, thanks to hunting being so big in the game and foraging being so useful. You also get some skills, which usually give a tiny advantage or quality of life feature.

There's some sense of exploration, even when you've already seen everything, as some materials re-appear over time. Most items you collect have value, so all activities feel rewarding to some extent.

The biggest thing in this game are cat colonies that fight over control. This pretty much gave me a goal and value to most of my items, which is the thing that kept most of the game feeling rewarding.

Gameplay - 100% achievements(4/10)

RNG achievements. Essentially get the most rare thing in each category. Multilayered RNG. First you have to find a rare animal/insect. Then you have to pray it doesn't get scared off by nearby cats (happened a couple of times). Finally you pray that you get it when you pounce (thankfully I didn't miss any). There are also several types of rare insects you need to catch and they only appear at specific seasons/times. I am very happy with rare animals as a feature, but I think having to catch each one for achievements is unnecessary.

miner achievements. Mines are 100 stage dungeons. Each stage has 20-50 rocks, one of which has a ladder to the next stage. It's impossible to tell which rock has the exit. Some rocks have gems (exchanged for a currency). Your goal for completion is reaching 100th stage in all of them. It was fun the first time(early in game), while rewards felt okay. Second dungeon is identical and doing that one felt boring. Last one is just like the previous one in terms of structure and rewards, but has more rocks (i.e. takes longer to find the exit) and stronger monsters, which turned the "boring" into mindnumbingly tedious.

Nothing about stages or fights changes in any significant way. Essentially, you need to break ~5k rocks while being attacked to find 100 exists, while being attacked by monsters that are difficult to avoid.

World Domination is an achievement that requires you to take every tile on the map. I'll preface this by saying you get absolutely nothing for conquering areas. It sounds fun, and early stages of that ARE fun (while you're doing other stuff). At some point that's the only thing you're doing and what you're doing is:

    • Travel half across the world for 1 fight
    • Travel to another corner of the world for 1 more fight
    • (optional) Collect Lavender. If you're reading this early in game, start collecting Lavender. Bombing the world with a huge supply of Lavender can cover most of this achievement.
    • Return home to sleep.
    • Repeat from step 1.

This achievement needs some sort of reasonable way to progress faster (without bombing the world with Lavender), because it turns some of the best gameplay into a chore.

Expert of the wild achievement (most rare with 0.6% completion rate) asks you to play the game for 10 in-game years. I wish devs would stop cramming non-reasons to stay in game after you're done with it. Give me a gameplay-related objective or GTFO. I was done with world domination (last REAL achievement) around year 6, so I had to keep sleeping for like 4 years. Guess what happens while you are sleeping (and time passes). All the friendships/alliances you've built and all the territory you conquered decay. You also have to sleep twice to pass 1 day and since you're sleeping after just having slept, you get a prompt asking if you are sure. On top of wasting my time (animations take a while) and not getting anything for it, I lose my progress.

If you ever wanted to play a warrior cats themed game as a kid this will fufill that need. If your someone who is interested in the animal survival aspect or even roleplay you might find yourself disappointed.

The gameplay is pretty basic and i do wish the npcs and mechanics were a bit deeper. The relationship system is very similar to Harvest Moon and Stardew valley type games but minus the dialogue and heart events.

I love this brilliant little game. It is cosy, quaint, adorable, wholesome, I could go on all day. Extremely relaxing and great for fans of cute kitties and warrior cats, or animals in general. I love the characters, the simple yet engaging little plot, the achievements (I still have to catch these two super rare bugs good lord) and the fact that you can have babies, decorate your home, and the seasonal events were super nice. 100% recommended

If you come here expecting an experience similar to Warrior Cats: Untold Tales, DO NOT BUY IT.

This game is what I'd call a Stardew Valley wannabe with cats, with similar mechanics, objectives, and a shameless copy of the community center restoration mechanic; yet with few, to none, improvements. From someone whom enjoyed Stardew Valley a lot, this game was absolutely boring and same-y, repetitive, and demotivating. Never do I feel attracted by the story or the characters, the mechanics, or locations. It is neither a good Stardew Valley-like game, not a good Untold Tales relative. I played it a few times, and I don't think I'm playing it ever again.

If you like this game, props to you. I'm not saying it's an unplayable mess, but rather a game that simply won't fulfill the expectations of individuals that come with this ideas, and might leave you extremely disappointed. Everyone to their own tastes, I guess.

I'm planning on having save files in different colonies in the future, because I love how all the clan cats are unique.

This is clearly a loving homage to Harvest Moon without being obnoxiously alike with Harvest Moon. Very chill, very calming. Not overwhelming. Unlike modern Harvest Moons which seem to put you on a timeline of what you should be doing, you can do what you like. There's a delightful sense of freedom to it in that way.

It's not perfect. The sprites are a little iffy, as is the movement. The art is VERY basic, juuuuust straddling the line of TOO basic. A little more love could have gone into the art in general. (Though some of the other cats' sprites are adorable nonetheless.) Also I would love to see some more content added at some point.

But it's absolutely worth playing. Get it on sale if you can, it's certainly worth buying at some point just for the freedom it offers alone.

Cattails is a cute animal sim and RPG in which players become a cat and must hunt their prey, gather herbs and socialise with other cats in a delightful open-world setting. It mixes a range of genres to create a surprisingly tricky but always adorable experience.

It successfully mixes a range of different genres, from simulation to RPG, to survival game, and the result is a more challenging game than one might expect from the cute aesthetic and adorable feline characters. It could possibly benefit from providing the player with a bit more direction towards the start of the game but the open-world gameplay is not too unforgiving and is incredibly fun to explore. The game lends itself to shorter bursts of play but also to much more extended sessions and could easily become a time sink. The variety of gameplay styles and overall quality means Cattails will have wide appeal and I for one, highly recommend it.

It starts out rather depressing. You get dumped in the forest, left to fend for yourself by a crappy human being. But you are befriended by another cat who was also dumped and they teach you how to hunt, fight and make friends. This is not a "quick" game, this is one you will keep going back to when you have the time. It's like Stardew Valley, only you're a cat!

Roughly played 1 hour. Cute game, pretty much Stardew Valley visuals, Cat version. Not to be compared with the mechanic though, it is different.

It is easy to get lost in the map at first until you understand how to navigate it. The hunting is quite fun, This is your first "mission" by the way, Coco gives it to you after the tutorial and den discovery., and then you get to do whatever you feel like. Always something to do if you look around. Redundant music so far but not unpleasant (You can also, like always, turn the music off).

I can see myself playing this game for a while, it's quite relaxing (Apart from the random cat fights but they are funny). Try it while it's on sale ;)

If you enjoyed Stardew Valley, you should give this game a try! It's not as complex in certain aspects, but it's still quite similar.
How would I describe this game? Well, it's Stardew Valley, but you are a cat, there's no farming, and gaining and holding territory through skirmishes is an important part of the game.
You need to hunt for prey to survive, and there is skilling, relationship building, collecting, festivals... heck, even missions and mining!
The characters are lovable and have some depth and quite a bit of charm. The artstyle is cute, quite varied, and the soundtrack is also pretty nice.

TL;DR: If you like games like Stardey Valley, give this a try. You'll get a lot of hours of fun, which if you get the game while on sale like I did is amazing bang for your buck. Consider picking this up!

This is a good game and has potential but at the moment it is far too similar to Stardew Valley. It doesn't offer enough to really shine as its own game but if more was added to the game to set it out from Stardew Valley this could change. This game does need more of a storyline or more NPC related missions because I often find myself with nothing to do in the game. I would not recommend the game in its current state but may recommend it when more updates released.

I named my character after my cat, and bought a little stripy jumper and scarf for him. If I tried to put those on my real one he would remove the flesh from my hands. It is worth it for that alone. The game is good, you toddle around collecting plants and hunting it is quite relaxing.

It's basically warrior cats the game. The whole thing is really well done with cute graphics and a simple but enjoyable story. The only iffy thing is the combat mechanics but that may just be because I'm bad at that.

DragonKayKay
DragonKayKay

This game is pretty fun at first, I defiantly enjoyed it for a bit, but its just so repetitive. The combat is boring, the story is short and lackluster, the characters are one-dimensional, and the graphics are honestly kind of dull. What's worse to me is that the devs are making a squeal that is the exact same game but with new textures (and they still look terrible!). In all the trailers it has the same boring combat and hunting, there is nothing new to even warrant a squeal, they should make the original game more interesting first.

I saw this game advertised on a recent sale, so I thought I'd give it a try. I read the reviews and saw some people comparing it to Stardew Valley, which I love. I will share my troubles with getting the game set up correctly, then I will share my experience with the game itself.

The first two hours were a complete headache trying to get the game running smoothly. Every time I tried to play it, it was super laggy at 12 FPS regardless if I was in windowed or full screen mode. I have above and beyond the recommended specs to play the game, so this should not be an issue. Apparently there are known problems for people with multi-monitor setups, especially if those monitors are running different resolutions/refresh rates. The developers have acknowledged this and say it is a limitation of the coding, so they cannot fix it.
My main monitor is 144Hz and my secondary monitor is 60Hz, and both are completely different resolutions. It ran fine on my second monitor, but not my main monitor. One of the workarounds was to change my main monitor's refresh rate down to 60Hz, but this would be cumbersome to have to manually change the setting each time I wanted to play the game and change it back after I was finished with the game. After much toying around with my graphics settings, I finally found a solution to this and want to share it in this review, in case it helps others.

HOW TO FIX LOW FPS ISSUE:
If you have an NVIDIA graphics card, go into the NVIDIA control panel. Under "Manage 3D settings", there are two tabs: One is called 'Global Settings' and the other is 'Program Settings'. Go into Program Settings and use the drop-down box to select Cattails. If it isn't there (it wasn't for me originally), you will need to add it by clicking the Add button and selecting it, it will be under the "recently used" list. Once it is added, change the following two settings for it:

Monitor Technology: Fixed Refresh
Preferred refresh rate: Application-controlled

Hit the apply button after these settings are modified, so it saves the changes. These settings will only effect Cattails and no other applications on your computer if you followed the steps above.
You may need to restart the game a few times, maybe even restart Steam as well to see any positive results. The game should now run in its maximum 60 FPS in both windowed and full screen modes, assuming your computer has beyond the recommended specs to run the game. I hope this fix helps others who might be struggling to get the game running at a decent framerate.

Now, onto the review of the game itself:

PROS:
- Cute cats, both NPCs and the player character. Dialogue is simplistic, but also well-written.
- Relaxing music.
- Festival games are fun.
- Plenty of customization for your cat's colors once you get into the game. Not customizing as in you get to design a color/style, but lots of colors/styles to choose from.
- You can choose when to save the game, as long as you are in your den. You don't have to sleep for the game to save.
- The NPCs (and even the player character) have no assigned gender. It is up to your imagination. I think this unlocks a lot of creativity when it comes to getting to know each cat.
- You don't even have to sleep, if you don't want to. Benefits of sleeping include healing a little health/getting 5 exp. You can easily make up the 5 exp you get from sleeping by continuing to hunt/forage all night long. You can also heal from herbs you find while foraging, or pay a small fee to a doctor to heal you roughly the same amount you would get from sleeping. So, sleeping is beneficial, but not necessary unless you want it to be (for immersion or other reasons).
- If you decide to marry and have kittens, your kittens will take on a combination of both yours and your partner's fur patterns. They can either look exactly like you, exactly like your partner, or a mixture of both. You get 3 designs to choose from when your kittens are born, for each kitten, so the customization is quite flexible.
- The different cat colonies/border skirmishes are a fun element, as well as gaining influence with other colonies and befriending their residents.

CONS:
- The story, though heart-wrenching in the opening cutscene, leaves a lot to be desired. I don't want to spoil the story in this review, but the "ending" (when you complete the main quest) isn't really fulfilling. What I mean is, you do the quest and you achieve the intended result, but there doesn't seem to be any solid meaning as to WHY you had to do it. I just feel the lore isn't written very well and the player is left wondering what the point of the main quest really was.
- The game does feel very repetitive after the first several hours. This can be the same for other games like Stardew Valley, but I find that other games have more elements to them that keep the player distracted/engaged/interested. The only thing that really kept me going for Cattails as long as it did was the Steam achievements. Without them, I probably would have stopped playing around 15-20 hours into the game, especially as there is a lack of content end-game.

OVERALL:
- It is a fun, cute, and light-hearted game.
- While there are some comparisons to draw on from Stardew Valley, it lacks the depth of Stardew Valley. This does not make it a bad game, however. It's just a different type of game and that's okay.
- I enjoyed striving for all the Steam achievements except the 5 and 10 year milestones. They would have just made me drag the game out for no reason, since I've already maxed out all my skills/abilities/reputation/relationships/etc. and completed all other content by year 3.

Would I recommend it? If you can get it on sale, then it's definitely worth it, but I don't think I'd have ever bought it if it was full price.

Ever saw a cute street cat and wondered what they do all the days? Maybe the cat collects licorice all day and then goes to the mines to mine some rock debris.

Now seriously. I love this game, it is kind of addicting. I bought it because it reminds me of the DOS game called "Wolf", or maybe even a similar game "Lion" from the 90's. I thought that it will be somewhat realistic simulator of a cat's life, full of hunting, fighting rival cats wandering onto my territory, etc. So I got introduced to this nice looking cat, Coco. After he finished talking to me, he just disappeared. Ok. Then I met a doctor and a shopkeeper cat. "I will not use their services, I will try to keep the gameplay as realistic as possible", I told myself. After a while, I got addicted to collecting herbs and hunting small animals and selling my items. After a while, I became rich. I wanted to start a family so I found a weird blue cat Lyrus (is that correct name?). We got married and he still friendzones me (he still says things like "I appreciate our friendship" when I bring him a gift). A mole built a nursery room in my den so I can have kittens. Can't wait how it turns out. If it won't be ok, I will return to the mines and become a slave cat for a mole.

it's cute, you can spend quite some time without getting bored, currently trying to finish the achievements and it's getting a little grind-y, but still a fun way to spend some time.

I played this game when it first came out and I thought it was incredibly exciting as it was very similar to the warrior cats structure as intended which I was a fan of at the time. However I'm no longer a fan of warrior cats, so replying this game wasn't that fun at all. But it was immensely fun while I played it, just wished it was harder and more activities to do.

I am living the warrior cats dream oh my god. this game is so so wonderful and so fun!!! it's structured and has challenges and goals if that's the type of game you like to play, but it's also calming and serene for people who like games that are more laidback! and you can unlock new colors as you progress by using in-game currency, which I was very very happy about. I'm a backer for the sequel on kickstarter now!!

i am a large sexy hunk of a man

just boring. i also did not play 20 hours i left my computer on for like 14 hours with the game on by accident and now cannot refund :( if there's a storyline, i couldn't figure it out and it just feels like there's no real way to progress. just repeating the same thing over and over. like stardew but no farming, no story, and cats? you can date the cats but that seems like it's going to be tedious and you can only date a select few which is fair, there's just no reasoning behind not being able to date the others from what i've seen. either way i rlly can't recommend this game in good conscience. i wish this game existed 10 years ago when i was obsessed with warrior cats but even then i can't see 10 year old me enjoying this game, it's just nothingness.

As you progress in the game, you can get a mate after reaching a high friend ship level.

Was originally hesitant about the game at first(It's stupid but wasn't sure about the hunger meter despite playing Minecraft & Starbound) but after watching someone play it I warmed up to the game.

It's nice to explore & leave items around, takes a while to get use to & takes a while to figure out hunting(as I kept getting to close) but once you get the hang of things it's fun. Just do your best to practice the controls, maybe look up some tips & things will work out if you can get use to it. The main quest, collecting items & earning money can take some time but it feels rewarding eventually. Give it some time to just see what works out for you.

This game is great for people that want something similar but different to games like Stardew Valley that involve exploring, mining, collecting & fighting as well as fans of Warrior Cat.

So. I've played this game for 204.5 hours. I am therefore entitled to put an AMAZING review on Cattails. If you have ever played Warriors: Untold Tales by Falconstar, it's basically that. But if not, let me tell you about it... The game is basically a fantasy cat survival. To put it simply (and sadly boring) you live in a colony, you hunt small animals, you complete daily tasks, you renovate you den, you conqouer the land, discover lost lands, you fall in love with a cat (I actually care about my lovely Nil), have kittens, and also other mystical things too. Here's some pros and cons:

Pros:
1. The NPCs have their own personalities, and you can make them think nicely of you with gifts
2. It has a decently interesting story line, maybe not the best, but it's good.
3. ADORABLE kittens
4. There's always something to do at the beginning (maybe at the end, but i'm not done yet, which says a lot with 200+ hours

Cons:
1. You kinda get bored after hunting and mining and searching then repeat
2. It takes FOREVER to find everything you need (I still have not finished)
3. You have to figure out the more complicated things (they teach you how to hunt, but basically everything else you have to figure out yourself)
4. Ummmm........ I couldn't think of anything else to put in cons

Goodbye! Hope you enjoyed!

I was totally surprised by this game! I didn't expect much as many animal themed games don't have much to offer, but this is an absolute gem! I warmly recommend Cattails to all sorts of players here! This game honestly soothes me when I'm feeling depressed... Truly one of my favorite steam games up to date!...

Arkhaos

Cattails is charming, with a satisfactory stat system, an interesting pounce mechanic, varied cat customization options, and factions that develop as the game goes on. While I have an overall positive view of the game, I do feel the need to drop constructive criticism.

I would almost call its story cute, but as is, there's just really not much of a story to cling to. The world is fairly empty of any memorable features or events (besides the festivals) with none that drive the plot forward in an exciting way. Who is the forest guardian? Why is it so essential that they return? We don't see anything dreadful in the wake of its disappearance, and nothing is there to drive us towards our goal (save for the temple, which lacks much explanation.) The lore is frighteningly thin, when I think it has so much potential. Why do these colonies exist near this guardian? Where do they come from? What is their relationship with one another? The guardian? More conflicts and story elements would be a great addition, as well.

Then, your relationships and interactions with other cats feel dull due to repetitive speech, the lack of any response option, and no visible character growth. There's not much you can do with them, besides talk, either. I feel like I know next to nothing about these cats, their pasts, their passions, their flaws, or their dreams.

If these details were improved upon, I believe Cattails could make itself an unforgettable adventure. As is, it feels like its made to pass the time,

This is literally just an amazing game for Warrior Cat fans and cat lovers alike! Nice amount of options for a lot of things in the game as well, so perfect for those who don't want to be stuck with limited options. Plenty of coats if you get the promo codes from online, plenty of cat NPCs to romance, and lots of things to hunt/find, and plenty of space to roam and claim as your own. If you just love cats, you'll love this game ^^

Great game, love it, hearts all around just a few tips to make it better,
1. It would be great if there where other things to fight other than cats. Like snakes, raccoons, and best of all bees.
2. can there be more things to wear like a uni horn or costumes?
3. how about cats start taking things from you if you get their disposition down to 0 stars?
4. could you add more prey? Like robins, Rainbow trout, and lemurs?
Again awesome game but you could make it more awesome by adding this stuff. Thanks!

I know a lot of people have already said it, but it is quite similar to SV with the harvesting, mining and relationship building.
One of the best things about this game though, is that you won't have to worry about glancing at the in-game time, realise how late it is, bust your behind to get home, only to pass out 30cm from your bed :/

On the other side, hunting can get a bit frustrating. And you will get jumped by gangs of rivals. A lot. Usually while you are trying to stalk your prey.
But over all it's a pretty neat game and worth playing

I love this game. This game is **kind of** like Stardew Valley, so if you liked that game (and love cats), this is very worth it.
Graphics-The graphics are 2D pixel art. The environment, entities, and character artwork is very well made. The simpler graphics work great for this game.
Difficulty-This game is pretty easy. The controls are simple to learn and use.
Story-This game has a mild story that can be accomplished at its own pace. Most of the gameplay is up to the player.
Audio-The music is adorable and really encompasses the spirit of a cat. The SFX are simple and fit well with their respective actions.
Characters-The NPC cats all have their own personalities. Some of the personalities seem to overlap a bit for a few of them, but they all still have their own quirks. None of the characters have a specified gender (Including your character), so you can help write their story in some ways. There is a friendship, gifting, and romance mechanics, with each cat having unique likes and dislikes.
Other-This game does not autosave. The controls can be customized. I have seen few, if any, glitches. The game works well on Mac computers. I have very few problems when it comes to lag, crashing, or other computer issues. This is great for me because my computer has been giving me plenty of issues independent of this game for a few years.

Overall I give this game a 9/10. It is super fun and relaxing to play.

Mostly relaxing game once you get some levels in, and the exploration is pretty cool. A number of the main quest items are rather grindy, but there's a good deal to do, regardless. Had the most fun with the mines, and the puzzles for the main quest did sometimes get interesting.

I do highly recommend it.

I bought this game because:

a) I love cats
b) I read a review that said it was like the cat version of Stardew Valley.

Now reason B was just a part of a Kotaku review but it couldn't be any farther from the truth.

Just shy of 90 minutes in I contemplated returning it and decided to keep giving it a chance because I really do love cats but oh my goodness is this game boring. I don't know if I just need to keep progressing beyond what I have been doing so far but as someone who also loves a grind, it seems like there is nothing to do except every morning fight a few battles, forage, and hunt to survive. over and over and over. I made it through to the first festival and that was also uneventful. Maybe once you start completing bundles by the strange mystical statues might change things but I don't know, I need a black rabbit for the first one and I only saw a black rabbit one time when I was too bad at hunting to do anything about it.

I payed like $5 for this game and I wish I could get it back.
