Why, just why is this game so criminally under the radar? "Chambara" is a simple and gorgeously stylised multiplayer stealth first-person shooter with simple to learn mechanics - an easy grab for every playful round that likes to duke it out chicken-ninja-style! Never seen this amount of well-crafted and artistic frugality! First split-screen game where closing your eyes can be a viable strategy!

Until now I never knew the pain of watching my girlfriend run me through with a guitar as she used her bird form to dash across a black and white city-scape to which I then exploded into maple leaves... Thank you Chambara my life is complete.

TLDR: video first impressions and extended gameplay.

Chambara is a local co-op brawler in which you play samurai birds fighting in high contrast maps with only a main weapon and a throwing star to claim victory.

First off: this is a wonderful local co-op game and has every right to stand along side games like overcooked, smash bros and towerfall in anyones line up of competitavce local co-op party games. My sole critique of the games is that its lack of an online multiplayer mode will hurt the longevity of it on a playform like Steam. Chambara is also available on the PS4 but Steam and the PC are not traditional local co-op platforms so this game may see rough long term returns.

Aside from that the gameplay, handling, sound, visual, combat, and general feel of the game are superb. You controls are fluid and intutuive. The combat is fast paced and rewarding for clever play, and the visuals are gorgeous. The use of negative and positive space put this games asethetic into another category on its own.

If you are looking for another local co-op when entertaining guests this should be a game you seriously consider.

Works wonderfully for getting that 3d shinobi fix. The game takes the minimalist approach, but the gameplay and what customization options are available (level variety and aesthetics of your bird ninjas) definately give you value for the cost.

Otherwise, this game is perfect for 2-4 player couch gaming. Although, I'm kind of sad that their wasn't a 4 free for all mode (which i imagine would be tricky to impliment) the 2v2 should be good for getting everyone in on the fun.

Amazing game! Controls are very smooth and fluid with no problems. The simple mechanics and gameplay with the additipon of "split screen stealth" makes it endlessly entertaining. Finally a game that has no sides or extras. Just click and play. Split Screen done to perfection.

Chambara is a beautiful steal action multiplayer game. Your heart will race as you attempt to find and kill your opponent while attempting to hide from them in plain sight. Chambara takes a simple concept and explodres it thoroughly. Featuring tight controls and well thought out gameplay. This is a great local multiplayer and well worth your money.

Super fun game! As someone who's really bad at PvP combat, I found this very enjoyable as a couch co-op. Lots of screaming on my part cause I never know what hit me!

Wow, this game is out of this world fun with a group of people. Immediate and never ending fun.

I really, really love this game. It's a hard recommend because of it's focus on local only and requires a friend, but the aesthetic and gameplay are phenomenal and far more complex then initial impressions would show.

Its a shame how dishonest game developers are these days.

No "full controller support" and despite showing a Playstation logo on their website we were unable to get our playstation controllers to work.

Steam has made it a point to destroy the Couch gaming Genre by allowing developers to forgo listing which controllers actually work for their games, resulting in refunds and headaches all around. But, I guess steam doesnt care.

If it isn't obvious I left this game in my wishlist for a long time, and per the store page and their website all seemed like it would work perfectly, but we couldn't get our controllers to work.

Furthermore, with only a mouse and keyboard we couldn't find a way to get out of the settings page. The settings also didn't include anything for controllers, alluding to how poorly done even the settings page was done.

Great concept, poor execution.

Fun for a little while with friends, but needs more content. Perhaps adding bots, a single player mode, online multiplayer, and more game modes would be good ideas. The core gameplay is smooth and fun. The graphics look great, too. Simple and clean. Overall, though, it feels more like a demo than a standalone game, and needs a lot more content before I can give it a strong recommendation. I'm looking forward to more updates. Watch my gameplay video if you're interested.

I hurried to grab this game after seeing some gameplay footage on YouTube. After spending time with it, I've come away with mixed feelings. It's a fun concept and the execution is pretty good, but the game doesn't feel refined enough.

Pros:

    • I am a fan of games that encourage stealthy assassin strategies, so for me, the black/white color scheme's influence on the gameplay is a big win. It has a strangely chaotic zen feel to it, if that makes any sense.
    • The music is awesome.

Now, I know that I didn't list a lot of pros there, but I still recommend the game. It's fun. It has promise, and that's where I'll get into my list of cons.

Cons:

    • The integration with bluetooth controllers is spotty. I had a few controllers go idle and turn off while I was looking at the settings, color schemes, etc., and then when I reconnected the controllers, none of them worked (including the one that I had been using to go through the menus). I believe this is a problem with how the game is tracking which controller goes to which player. Restarting the game temporarily fixed the issue.
    • The controls would benefit from some refining. I use Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers, which have A/B swapped and X/Y swapped. As a result, the location of the buttons feels awkward for some actions, and it doesn't match any of the on-screen prompts. I know that I could reconfigure all my controllers for this game, but other games seem to be smart enough to tell what controller I'm using, so I think this one should as well.
    • The game needs more customization options in the settings.

For instance, in addition to choosing which maps can show up when picking random, you should also be able to have a list of "user-approved" color schemes. The black/white/accent standard color scheme is the only one that I consistently like across the different maps, and because the random map choice picks the color scheme randomly as well, I refuse to choose the random map option.
Speaking of the color schemes, the user should be able to edit and save them (and later restore them to default if so desired). It is fun to have the ability to change the colors, but to have to repeatedly change them each time you play is a pain.
Another options toggle that should exist is to invert the looking direction by default. It's kind of annoying to have to select invert each time a new game is starting.
Finally, it would be nice if the game remembered how you last customized your avatars for each player. It would translate into more gameplay time with your character looking how you want, rather than just taking the default combo or wasting time repeatedly scrolling through the selections.

To sum up my review, I'd say that the game is fun, and with a little more work it could be amazing. I am crossing my fingers.

Legitimately one of the best local CO-OP games I've played in my life. The Rick Dalton of video games.

Very fun and stylish game.
Perfect for 4, but not more or fewer.
This game can definitely improve by adding more gamemodes and breaking the 2 team 2v2 restriction.
In my opinion, this is better than screencheat, another game with similar concept, as least graphically speaking.
would love to see more types of attacks/ loadout combinations.

Excellent overall, but needs some support. A three player mode would be a big help, as well as a four player free-for-all, online play... that sort of thing. Don't hesitate to buy though, awesome couch brawler/dueling game.

Very nice concept, extremely funny, but poor controller support. If you try to connect 2 PS controllers, game opens for 4 players and one controller works not. There is absolutely no way how to change anything about it in config.
Development is dead and it's frustrating - the game has still huge potential.
