It's a fine chess game and the graphics are good but it has many shrtcommings. There are 10 levels that range from weak to seemingly very intelligent. They're not as predictable as the one in pure chess.

But I don't like the design of most chess pieces, I really only play with the wooden ones that look okay. There is a function when after a game is finished you can retrace past moves but there is a bug in the 5 minute mode that often doesn't allow you to go back because when you do the game just ends again. This may also be a thing in 30 minute and 24 hour but I haven't run out of time there ever. There is also an endless time mode.

When you are playing even against a computer you can not pause the game for as far as I know. You can go to a menu that makes it seem like it's pause but it's not which has made me lose due to the timer running out a few times.
I avoid all boards except for the first and last one because the others put the camera at an awkward angle I don't like.
I mute the music because there is one track that sounds like a timer ticking and I can't change the music anywhere.

The score system doesn't make sense to me. And I wanted to replay against the computer again quickly but there is no way to do that fast. It takes like a minute or two to play again.

Due to the coding of this game, it allows people to start a game and back out to the main menu while the game is in progress. This results in idle games most of the time. Its very difficult to find players online to play with. Shame because I love the ambiance of this game. They should take a page out of Chess.com and provide a free update.

Terkan

This should have been a virtual visual interface with chess.com and lichess.

It's nice looking, tries to look classy, but it's unimpressive. if it doesn't feel like wizard chess then I don't see a point using game engines to visualize chess. I'd like the pieces to genuinely destroy eachother, and I'd like the pieces to be three meters tall.

I'll refund this one.

I bought this game to play in VR. On the desktop its fine, in VR this looks like some 2005 throw back. It's so bad I can't use words to explain it. If the graphics weren't bad enough, the controls are completely impractical. It's like the controls were designed by someone that had VR described to them by a blind person. I mean seriously, why am I moving my head around to select tabs?

I bought this so I could improve my game by practising against the AI. The problem is you have to select one of several different difficulty levels based on ELO ratings of the AI. If you beat it the ELO rating of the AI decreases (as though it were a tournament match) and increases it if you lose. So for the next game, if you lost you play against a harder opponent and if you won you play against an easier opponent. Sure you can select another level which jumps difficulty in either direction but the jump is too great. What's needed is a gradually increasing ELO rating for the AI if you win and vice versa. I'm in the situation where I'm now stuck between a level that's too easy for me and another that's too hard. You can reset the ELOs by deleting past games but I feel it's missing a trick here and I've lost interest.

I am going to have to not-recommend this due to the fact the game does not allow you to invite people from your friend list to games. It has an option to do so in the game, but if you actually try to use this option it just sets you up on a random online game instead.

This sort of thing is unacceptable and I regret that it took me this long to discover that bug.
Apparently this bug has been there for YEARS now. Utterly ridiculous.

Somehow Ripstone managed to make the sequel worse in most ways. The predecessor Pure Chess has sharper looking chess sets, less stubborn camera, and it clearly shows the board result when the game is over. This one doesn't. The only plus side is that the backgrounds are more detailed.

Relaxing yet stimulating. AI is challenging. Could use a few more tutorials on chess theory. Overall, a good chess game.

Chess Ultra has the perfect balance of having enough features to provide an easy to set up and enjoyable experience, but at the same time not too many features that it seems convoluted.

I have been enjoying playing against the computer, which has multiple levels of difficulty as to be expected, although I would say the ratings that the AI opponents have are not the most accurate. One is rated around 1400 and makes newbie errors and misses obvious advantageous moves, but nevertheless it's lots of fun to play a competitive and long-thought out game, or a fast paced and heart-pounding blitz game with seconds to spare.

An absolute deal-breaker for myself and the reason my friend and I have the game is the multiplayer. If there was none, that would be a stone cold "no thanks" from us. After playing dozens of games over a long period, we've found the multiplayer to be very reliable (I can't recall any major glitches). Multiplayer in Chess Ultra is very enjoyable from our experience - There's nothing quite like settling down in Woodburn Manor (one of the game's environments) and enjoying the atmosphere with an alcoholic beverage and some good old fashioned banter. It's a weekly ritual for us and has been a gem for our socialising, especially with the restrictions we've been experiencing.

Another welcomed feature is the ability to save up to 6 of your most recent game and revisit them, with an option to copy the entire game in a proper .PGN (Portable Game Notation) format, so you can send the game to others to see, or input them into chess.com or similar site and analyse the position and improve your game. This to me is a fantastic feature and I absolutely love it.

Chess Ultra is one of my favourite games. It's atmosphere, features, ease of use, privacy, steam integration, graphics and variety in visual options and game modes makes it a special and enjoyable experience, and for my money - the best chess game on steam.

Would not recommend. Style over substance. Only played v computer but found the AI poor, with no draw options. Performance of AI players spoils game. At lower levels, they'll make howlers rather than slightly bad strategic moves. Found it hard to find a level that was the right balance of challenge. ELO system seems all over the place.

It's a nice relaxing chess simulator with great graphics. It offers online play, single player play with bots, and puzzles. The designs of the chess sets are great although some combinations are hard to differentiate from the two sides.

I'll change my review if anyone can get my game to run.
Meanwhile I will be playing chess at chess.com

I have tried to solve the issue with the following methods:
Updating my Graphics cards drivers.
Restarting Steam Multiple times.
Uninstalling & Reinstalling game.
Restarting my Desktop.

Great looking Chess game - There are stronger chess engines out there - But even very good players stand little chance against those. This game is beatable albeit set at a 'not-too high a level - It is though very pretty to look at and is a great way to relax if you can't find a real opponent or even a real board, Verdict - not bad at all actually

Great features? Check. Easy-to-navigate interface? Check. Stunning visuals and chess piece designs? Check. Beautiful, haunting music that truly captures the essence of this ancient "game of thrones"? Check. Lots of help for novices and those wishing to improve their game? Check. Fluent, unflustered gameplay? Checkmate!

Simply put, chess is the single greatest real-world game ever to be invented, and Chess Ultra deserves to take the crown as the most impressive virtual tribute to the king of board games.

i got into a king and rook vs king and rook position. The bot (professional), which had 3 min to my 1 minute, attempted to flag me (hikaru style). With my superior flagging skills, i got into a position where i had 23 seconds and bot had 0.00. He, then went on to blunder his rook. I, already celebrating, didnt realize i was celebrating too early. The bot went on to play 30 moves on 0.00 seconds and flagged me. And even tho it was king + rook vs king, i lost the game where it was impossible for my opponent to checkmate me since he only had a king. Uninstalled, 0/10, never playing again.

(edit: flagging means finishing your opponents time in chess language)

Got this game at the end of 2021 and it is brilliant, the graphics are phenomenal and the game is smooth and relaxing. Bought a couple of DLC piece sets when on sale for some extra variety and those were both well worth it. The AI difficulty seems fair with 8 or so levels with some spacing in between. Overall this game is essentially a beautiful chess simulator which almost feels more authentic then real chess. Wouldn't mind some more locations other than the current 4 but if that is the largest complaint then that's pretty good lol.

My "yes" recommendation comes with a huge set of caveat.

If all you're looking for is a casual chess game with nice graphics and decent musical score (which I was), then you won't be disappointed with this game.

If you're expecting this game to be a reincarnation of the Chessmaster series, then you will definitely be disappointed.

The chess engine on the highest setting claims to have an ELO of around 2000. It's actually more in the 1600-1800 range. It'll give you a good game if you're a casual or club player, but anything more than that and you'll bury it. It's nowhere near any of the current crop of free or commercial chess engines in strength, so don't expect to do any serious analysis with it either.

The chess engine itself is shrouded in secrecy. It's proprietary, has never been entered in any computer chess competitions that I can see, and is hard-wired into the main executable. So again, if you're looking to try and gauge or analyze your play you won't be able to meaningfully do so with this engine as the only validation is what's specified by the authors.

Also, unlike pretty much every other free and commercial chess program out there this program does not support the UCI protocol so you cannot add any other external engines (probably on purpose as their engine is not that strong), so again you can forget about doing any real game analysis with this program. You'll have to export your games then bring them into another application.

The game does come with basic tutorials and such, but again nothing to write home about. It will teach you the rules of the game and some very basic tactics, but you can find much better material for free online.

The game offers online play, but with it's own system. It doesn't tie into any of the popular online chess sites like Lichess. Honestly, it's not even worth it. If you really want to pit yourself against the world you can play for free with a much larger audience of bots and people on Chess, LiChess, FICS, etc.

So to sum it all up, if you're looking for a casual chess game with pretty graphics then wait for a steam sale and pick this up. Anything else and you'll likely be disappointed.

This game is great in VR. I enjoyed playing chess with the grim reaper, but I would love to play with other characters in other environments too instead of just sitting alone. having a character to play with really adds to the whole experience in VR. I play this on my quest with a link cable. So far this is a casual go to if I'm bored and in the mood for a game of chess. I would buy other board games from this developer.

The VR experience is like playing chess with my grandpa when I was a kid. Just like real life. This game isn't a huge time sink, but it is a great casual VR title. It's something you'll find yourself going to every once in a while when you're bored, and it's probably also good for more robust practice if you're looking to play more professionally. It's a good game.

I don't particularly think there should be a micro transaction store, but it's up to the developer on how they make their morning coffee appear. I'd like to see characters added to the environments that don't have them in a free update, and then I would possibly consider looking for more environments with characters to play with on the store, but the most I'd pay for an environment with a character is probably $5. Others might give or take a few, but we all know little adds up a long way.
Price is up to the developer.

Anyway, the current offering is pretty good for a chess game. It's arguably the best chess game I ever played, (so maybe $10 on that new environment and original character to play with.)

Buy the game if you like chess and have VR, you wont regret it.

The game plays like an amateur even at higher levels. It frequently plays simple blunders that any competent chess engine would avoid. It also doesn't work at all on my Asus gaming laptop.

The game no longer works on most new hardware in a computer. Developers haven't updated the game to work. So if the game crashing upon loading up then that it for you. If you can get a refund do it. Cause at the moment there is no fix to get the game to run smoothly anymore.

Fantastic game. Graphics A++. Game play, well it's chess. Tutorials for newbs and challenges for experienced players. But by far the best feature for me is playing the Grim Reaper in Gomorrah in VR. My only minor critique is the chess board in VR seems a little small.

This is probably my bad for buying this game 5 years after its release, but nobody's playing this. Matchmaking put me up against the same player 6 times in a row and I returned it. If you're looking for challenge modes and vs. AI with a pretty polish, this'll satisfy, but if you're looking for head-to-head against another player, you may want to look elsewhere.

ᛈᛁᚦᛇᚨ
ᛈᛁᚦᛇᚨ

This game has helped me learn a very obscure but important chess rule: that white automatically wins all timed games.
How, you say? Well, it's very simple.
As white, make your first move. Any move is fine. Anything that will start the clock's counting down.
And.. that's it.
Now, do absolutely nothing. Nothing at all. And one of the following two things will happen.
1) The black player will run out of time before making even their first move. Wow! What a dope! This is a loss for black by time-out.
or
2) The black player will take their first move, and then your clock will start counting down. This is fine. Let it count down to 0, without taking your second move. When the clock reaches 0, you'd expect that white would lose by time-out, right? But no, instead black will automatically resign, handing the win to white. Black isn't given a choice. This is (obviously) mandatory in the rules of chess. Who knew!

Enjoy winning every timed game (so long as you're white). Even the pros don't know about this rule! Imagine how high you can rise in the world rankings with this one simple trick! Has science gone too far?

But whatever you do, do not give in to the temptation to make moves past your first, even just for fun. The ONLY way for black to win a timed game is for them to checkmate white before white's clock runs out. If you start making moves after your first, you're risking throwing away certain victory.

Recommend with mixed feelings. This game has the best/most realistic computer players I've ever encountered and the graphics are fine. However, the camera is complete garbage. You frequently can't see all the pieces captured as your character sets them on the other side of some coffee cup or something. Also there seems to be no way to just have a static view of the board once the game ends. So basically, good strategy coding with a UI designed to be frustrating on purpose.

I once had an opportunity to win a match with my Rook, but no matter what i tried, my castle wouldn't move, i know a lot of things about Chess, and my "King" wasn't in danger with any other pieces. I tried everything to move but i just couldn't, i eventually just quit because as soon as i did another move, i started losing immediately. All because of one simple bug where the Rook wouldn't move.

I'm just a casual chess player, so maybe the game is operating on a set of rules that I'm not aware of, my I'm getting really sick of the game deciding that the match is a "stalemate", when it is most definitely not. It seems just about every match I start ends in an abrupt stop as "stalemate" flashes on the screen, and it's most definitely not a stalemate.

Fun ambiance, music, visuals, global feeling. I like the idea of recreating very famous games and allowing you to analyse, observe them.

Very bad multiplayer. I have not managed to get a single multiplayer game going. This is very disappointing since this was one of the main reasons I wanted to buy this game - to play with people online. If this is your goal, I would say HARD pass. Very bad system, takes ages, unresponsive.

I love chess. I grew up playing it with plastic pieces on an old checker board. I have been looking for a game that I can play in between tasks to take a break that won't take too long and I can pause. This is it. I just play against the computer and play games to the best of my ability. This is an excellent game, it has everything I want. Quiet, different calming stages, it's not kitschy or over the top with animated death sequences. It is just a simple chess game that looks nice. I love that it has tutorials and you can choose your chess skins. Really helps me clear my head.

To be honest, the game is quite poor. There are few players so it is hard to match to an opponent. The view of the game is difficult to adjust, and the animation played on each move is too long. It is probably because this is an old game that haven't been updated or fixed in a long time.

EXTREMELY BLURRY with Valve Index - SteamVR res slider does not work!
This chess game looks totally awesome, but is totally destroyed by the super-blurry res. Looks like SteamVR res 20% or so - it's so blurry it's simply unplayable.

Can devs please fix the supersampling - I am using High graphics quality, image quality is beyond terrible.

Is there an ini-file to control supersampling?

Thanks!

Get the supersamling to work, and I'll change this to a positive review, thanks!

PS. I'm using a RTX 3090 and i9 10900K with 32GB - Win10 Pro.

Only get this game when it's on offer, worth it if you like chess and nice graphics! But can't justify the full price.

Was really hoping this was going to be the end of my good chess game search. however the ranking system is completely broken. Won a game against someone with a slightly lower ranking than me and to my surprise, I'm the one that gets to lose rank while they gain rank. Lol wut?? Played a few more games, the 5th game I played was very intense. And suddenly I lost because Apparently I resigned! Didn't run out of time, The game just broke and said I resigned.. Getting my refund for sure...

VR is incredible, great way to play OTB without playing OTB. Only issue is the long waits for a player to make the first move when playing PvP online. I think people request to play online, but the process to find a player takes to long so they move on to something else and then you get paired with them. But playing against the engine, especially death, is a blast.
