GAMEPLAY:
There are so many things wrong with the gameplay that playing it feels like a chore.
1. Most of the enemies are melee and their attack animation is pretty fast so fighting in close range put you in a heavy disadvantage
2. Dodging feels really bad at that game, basically every dodge is too long in time or length and the dodge cd is pretty high so by the time you dodge the enemy can already attack again
3. You can also stunlock enemies with basic attacks and while it is viable way to deal with small groups of monsters, once you pass the 3,4 enemies mark or there is a ranged enemy this strat isn't viable
4. So you are basically force to mitigate damage by moving, and the game expect you to move alot, frequent melee attacks, to avoid swarming, to dodge projectile and deadly AoE which can work in a game but the problem is:

There are 2 ranged characters in the game which one of them can move while attacking, and the rest are forced to melee combat and getting grounded in place while attacking.

Your entire gameplan (if you want to play as optimally as possible) is to kite enemies away hit them until they are on melee range and kite them again until they are dead.
Or in the case of melee you autoattack them until they start swarming you and then you kite them away until they all come from the same angle to you so you can do that again

now it wouldn't be so bad if there wern't alot of enemies but there are alot of them they all feel the same and they all feel like damage sponges. And what makes it worse that some enemies can come back to life and some enemies can summon other enemies which make it feel way more tedious

PROGRESSIONS: you can get currency while doing runs to upgrade your characters after the run but all of the upgrades are just better stats and on a whole are boring to get or use. You can also get exp to upgrade your heros but you basically get 2 Active abilities (depend on character but there is no different builds or anything you can get), a bunch of boring passives, and half the skill tree is dedicated to a rage meter which takes minutes to fill but around 10-20 seconds to waste.

ROUGE-LIKE ELEMENTS: Pretty much non existent, most of the powerups you will get are temporary/on a long cooldown and you can have 1 at a time so you can't really have a build. Also store choices become pretty obvious once you realize you want the passive effects you can stack and not active effects you can have only 1 in slot.
In the case of special rooms, other than the shops which you have around 3 in a run and the occasional challenge room for reward (once per run) you get no other rougelike choices. For the entire run you will stay at around (little big above) the power level you started the run as.

Also another relatively minor thing but it just oozes bad game design, there is an equipment with 1:30 min cd that just give you small amount of healing, now you might ask what is stopping you from standing in place and just spamming it out of combat and the answer is nothing

The game feels like the monsters in the dungeon decided they cant beat you in normal means so they will just make you hate the game so you won't want to play it. The game feels like Binding of isaac but only if enemies had 50% more hp, you lost 75% range, was forced to stand in place while attacking and barely got stronger during the run.
Truly one of the worst Action games I have played gameplay wise.

If you don't buy this you are insane. This game has a unique leveling system, with amazing art and a amazing story. Buy it. Buy it now.

This game is amazing! The visuals are so colorful, the family is so awesome, and there are so many episodes that enrich the characters. I also love the gradual unlocking of abilities and options. It's very fluid, and so is the story. Highly recommended to play with a friend! Makes the game that much better! I'm just sorry I bought this game on sale, it deserves all the credit. :D

Children of Morta is another copy/paste hack'n' slash dungeon crawl. The story and animation is fun. The combat is fun. Upgrade feel rewarding and class distinctions are rewarding.
It is a little campy in their weirdly conservative gender roles and tropes but I guess it's rural family values.

The world building was fun. It's one of the few games I actively wanted to listen through the cut scenes.

Story and art work are gorgeous, but the framerate is unbearable. Game is unplayable and from what I can see from many searches is that the only fixes don't seem to work and that there are some folks that just can't get it to run properly. That appears to include me. Do not buy in current state.

Good game to play with friends rouge like with a neat story. charming graphics. good game if you only have 30 mins to play.

This is a very enjoyable rogue-lite. The story has plenty of twists and turns whilst covering some strong family focused themes. It also has the odd side quest to ensure you find something new on each run through each of the dungeons.

Starting out can be tricky but its important that you spend time with each family member as they each have passives that boost the family as whole. I liked this aspect as it did encourage me to explore different play styles.

I also used steam play together and it worked fine would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys roguelites with friends

Game is nice, but too buggy. Would give it a positive review, but three years after launch, it is unacceptably buggy. After 11 hours of playing this game online coop, my advice is to save yourself some frustration and play something else if what you want is to play online.

Wonderful co-op experience. Breathtaking pixel graphics. Lovely story narrated by a literal voice of an elden god. The gameplay is real fun though challenging (I chose "hard" difficulty). You can play as all characters of the family by slowly unlocking them as the story progresses. Worth the full price for the game!

P.S. get the pet dlc for 3$; it is so wholesome and adds to the plot!

This is my favorite roguelite to date.

Pros:
Many interesting classes with very unique mechanics to experiment with
Challenging but fair gameplay
Interesting story
Intensely fun and well paced arcade mode

Cons:
Campaign pacing is a little slow (depends on how good you are though)
Online coop wasn't there at the time I played it
Difficulty sometimes feels strictly balanced for 2-player mode

If you like rogue-likes this is a great game. I enjoy the story, but mostly love how the characters power up and help one another in a variety of ways as you level them up. It encourages you to try each character for this reason alone, but beyond that each character's play style is truly different and keeps the game fresh.

I do recommend it ON SINGLE PLAYER. It's actually a fairly fun game. I might complain that Linda makes the game too easy if you learn how to animation cancel, but it forces you to play other people too so it's not a huge deal.

But the game's coop is poorly thought out. 1) The guest doesn't bring along their own roster. Both players play from the host's roster, which means that the guest doesn't get any gold or exp for themselves, while the host gets exp for two characters per run instead of 1. This makes it... not very satisfying to play as the guest, since you're not getting anything in-game for playing with your friend, and means there's no reason at all to play with anyone you don't know personally since you're just helping an internet rando for no reason. 2) There doesn't appear to be any scaling at all, coop versus single player, so the bosses which are fun challenges in single player are just pushovers in coop.

I commend the developers for creating a game that immerses players in the truly inconceivable fantasy of a loving and supportive family.

Rage
Rage

A really fun rogue-lite with an interesting progression system. The characters all share passives that unlock as they level up. Some of these are quite useful. Thus, playing with any character benefits the others in a tangible way. The art is fantastic and full of charm. The story is pretty heartfelt but barebones. The addition of ng+ adds replay value to an already solid product. Good stuff.

I played and completed this game on "Hard" mode, co-op with a friend. It was enjoyable but there are many problems with the game.
Would not recommend without co-op, though co-op is buggy.

6/10

-Gameplay

All three zones you can access are essentially the same randomly generated dungeons with the occasional new enemy. Most enemies are relentlessly reused, perhaps with changed colour, and most are just annoying to kill, such as the small slimes and the flame wheels that run away from you in the final zone.

The game seems to be incredibly, increasingly easy. I'm glad we picked hard mode or I'm sure there wouldn't really be gameplay at all other than holding M1.
We died most to the first or second boss, and beyond that point did not have a single "death" (both players fall). Final boss weaker than first boss and we didn't even have final perks in the tree yet.
Beyond the ending we had no desire to play the endless mode at all because of just an inherently un-fun gameplay loop.

-Bugs (some of the many)
In one of our later sessions enemies stopped loading in but could still be damaged, requiring a full restart.
After one of our dungeon crawls the game completely crashed on the loading screen and we lost all of our progress from that run.
Visual glitch with both players casting teleport to final room
Grandma appeared in some cutscenes alive for Player 2 after her death?
One of the desert wall tiles is just a black square instead of a wall tile.

-Story
I didn't mind the story but it became increasingly poor as the game went on, ending ridiculously and abruptly.

Ending spoilers
Child of Rea is mentioned once and then not elaborated on, Ou is some sort of alien? Rea-dana randomly forgives Ou, Ou requiring the newborn is unexplained, Ou being jealous of his own child is unexplained, the ghost of Grandma at the end is unexplained, the significance of "Morta" or "mount morta" is completely untouched upon throughout the game, ending just feels rushed in general
other random story notes
The arrival of Joey seemed completely unexplained as I think we were supposed to die on a few runs before killing the boss, which would have progressed the story.
Apan as a character is completely unexplained, the only playable non-Bergson, and her dragon never comes up again beyond her intro cutscene.

Waaaaaaaaaayyyy overhyped. Ridiculously short. Pretty, and that's all. The DLC character can't be played in the main story, and I certainly won't come back to the game after having finished it. There are far better games out there. Go play Hades or Dead Cell, and, if you really need a action-roguelike co-op, try Ember Knights or Fury Unleashed.

Morta is a great atmospheric rouglite/RPG. The storytelling and pixel graphics are amazing. It has questionable replay value cause the story is the real drawn of this game imo. I have not played since the DLC so perhaps that changes that some.

The story and family are fun but the actual gameplay is barely so-so. Very little variety in enemies, power-ups that feel pretty awful, even random event rooms feel generic. Finally there seems to be input lag problems, playing as archer girl, she can't shoot if she runs out of stamina. So I'm shooting until I run out of stamina then stop shooting but somehow the input is buffered anyway locking me in place. Killed me in 2 boss fights already.

I found the game to just not be fun.

The upgrades that I found were mostly boring, like increase damage, increase health, increase critical chance, increase gold find, etc. There are upgrades like increase damage, gold find, exp gain and luck that feel like you are forced to invest in early heavily while ignoring other ones as they are not nearly as good, as damage increase makes a massive difference in how quickly you are able to dispatch enemies, gold find helps get the gold needed to buy said upgrades so the earlier it is upgraded the less grinding you will need to do, exp gain makes it so you can unlock character abilities faster that are a bit more fun that the stat upgrades that you can buy with gold and luck makes it easier to get more gold and items during your run.

I didn't see that much variety in enemies. Player attacks feels sluggish and slow in comparison to some of the enemies that run around you and then suddenly go for a quick swipe at you, while you feel rooted in place as you attack with most characters. Abilities have a relatively long cast time so you can't really mix a lot of them in while fighting as you are basically forced to dodge after casting it or eat an attack after using one.

The game looks pretty thou and I like the narrator voice.

I love everything about this game except for one thing and sadly, that one thing eventually overshadows all the effort that the team has put into music, story, characters, level design and everything else.
This game has some serious balance issues, a lot of characters feels absolutley useless when you're playing solo or even a party, while others are op. the progress system is not that rewarding after every run, adding a small percentage of dodge chance or crit for example that doesn't really makes that much of a difference. everything else about this game is amazing; I'm Persian i'm so honored and glad that people from my country are making it in the industry, it feels great to see familiar persian names inspired by our myths and stories. but as I said, this game needs rebalancing, A LOT of it. It becomes extremely frustrating if you're trying to finish the story solo around act3, the game leaves you no choice but to play with one or two characters to the point where you have to either be very very careful or just cheese the level somehow. Item drops through the levels are a let down as well, there's not much to get you excited and make you feel like you're powerful. Overall its an amazing game, get it on a discount; but gameplay wise? its a no for me

Fun combat and very good pixel graphics. While it may not be overly rich in story, it'll still keep you entertained.

I played and completed this game doing co-op with a friend!
Here's some pros:
-Lovely art style! absolutely beautiful pixels going on in here!
-I found the gameplay loop to be very enjoyable, but I get that it wouldn't be for everybody

Annnnnd then the cons:
-Through multiple moments in the early game, I commented that this was really great for a game in early access, or a game still trying to iron things out, then I found out the game came out in 2019, I get that the co-op is still relatively new, but the experience when you're the co-op partner is... lackluster, and a lot of it I can't extrapolate on without spoiling the story.

-The art is TOO detailed at times, there were a lot of points where we couldn't figure out if something was interactable, or an enemy, or just a set piece.

-And on that note, the characters, when set up next to the beautifully detailed art, just look a little ridiculous, like putting stick figures in Starry Night.

-There are a -lot- of weird bugs in multiplayer, and all of them seem to be for just the invited player, game freezes, movement lag, snapping backwards, I ended up only playing ranged characters because playing a melee character when you can't reliably block or dodge is difficult, one characters attacks are supposed to teleport him to the enemy he has targeted, well as the co-op invitee that just doesn't happen 80% of the time, it was a frustrating experience to say the least.

Overall, the experience of the game was... fine, but it certainly had a lot of downsides, for very little upside, we're breaking into the games endless mode now, or whatever you want to call it, and THAT has its own slew of bugs in multiplayer, but I won't fault it for those since they aren't present in the main story.

One of the best roguelite games i've played so far.

It's near perfect on all aspects :

- the art is beautiful
- the story is quite mysterious, in a good way, and the finale is really touching. A very immersive game, which isn't something that common in rogue games
- the relationship between all characters is nice, you get attached to pretty much all of them, their personal evolution is a welcome feature, very original
- the gameplay is top notch
- the evolution both between and during runs is quite deep, even though it's pretty simple (skill trees for all characters, passive bonuses that can be upgraded which affect all family members, temporary items with both active and passive bonuses during the run, pets with the DLC, other family members can appear and give you a hand, etc)
- good length, it took me about 30h to finish it and i'm still having fun with the New game + feature, i can easily see myself spend another 30h (i advise you to go hard mode straight away, i haven't tried normal mode, but hard was already pretty easy if you take some time now and then to farm a little - except for one boss fight that made me shed a few tears because you can't go back and farm once you're there)
- also it has coop, both couch and online

Anyway, a really really good game!

Great game with some disappointment about the family Trials. Be warned!! You pretty much have to assign a few hours of time slot before you play this feature. There is no save between sessions!! If you take a break or do some chores, and think you can continue after that, you can't!! It will start from beginning again. This is so wrong!!

Overall – Children of Morta is just awesome. The Co-op gameplay is absolutely a blast to play, and the family trait sharing is a great feature. No matter which character you play, everyone receives family wide buffs that make the gameplay feel a lot more solid. The game features some difficulty ramp up that can take a little bit to get used to, but once you effectively learn to dodge and/or block, you’ll be having a great time. Highly Recommended.

A pretty decent game with beautiful art style and animations. Wholesome, albeit basic story, a lot of characters to choose from with very different playstyles. Voiceover and soundtrack adds to the atmosphere and quality of immersion. The only major downside is that Children of Morta completely misunderstands what makes rogue-like games so infinitely enjoyable and replayable: when you play and collect power-ups, your character should not be stopped abruptly and stripped of all the powers by the level ending (not game ending!). The very progression in this game feels... pointless, because even with the great build you'll have at most a few minutes to enjoy your power.

Overall, I do recommend Children of Morta. It is cosy and fun.

While not an incredible roguelike as the mechanics are not fleshed out or much variety like some others (like Isaac or Hades) it's still very enjoyable, combat is smooth and there was enough to return a few times to the same dungeon. Music and art are amazing (though sometimes the pixel art was odd during cutscene but this was rare).
Recommended for anyone who likes Rogulikes.

This is some top notch stuff. I have complaints about a couple of characters that feel weak, and there's a weird effect as the camera zooms in and out on the pixel work that's weird and disorienting. Everything else about this game is excellent. Strongly recommended.

A solid entry in the Rogue-like genre. This time you have the capability of unlocking five or six additional playable characters as the story mode progresses.

More like Hades than Binding of Isaac, in that your character abilities grow between sessions, not just during your current game.

A single run consists of going through multiple levels of a dungeon and defeating a big boss at the end. The story mode is progressed if you win.

There is also a 2-player multi-player mode.

It plays well on the Steam Deck, but the fonts used make reading much of the text difficult.

For the first time in my life I was compelled to applaud a video game at the end. This game managed to make little pixel art people feel real and robust. It managed to make me care about each and every one of them. It made all of them fun and unique to play with. Progression is done just right, so much so that it make the game still feel playable and fun on a second game plus play through. Would I recommend? Yes! Over and over to anyone who will listen!

great coop roguelike; played with a friend and we binged like 6hrs of gameplay the first day. there are minor issues that i'm facing (rubberbanding back to traps to take damage, char revived but the sprite is dead on my end) but i think that it's due to me playing on an old mac.
