Fun game but very linear. Got stuck on a few puzzles and also was also on edge because of the slightly creepy atmosphere.

Conductor appears to have some promise on the store page, but unfortunately what you see is all that you get. The devlopers didn't hide anything about what you're doing in the trailer and that really is too bad.
Puzzle Difficulty
Some of the puzzles have (small) challenges. The very last puzzle probably has the most unique solution. The rest of them are a bit less exciting. The stop with the windmill was possibly the only other one I found somewhat reasonable. The rest are fairly obvious once you understand the rudementary game mechanics operating them.
Gameplay
The game narrative depends entirely on the player reading and listening to narrative dialogue, which can work when the narrative supports a growing story but doesn't work when the prewritten dialogue is the entire story. Despite the fair* amount of story given to the player, the world never really builds on the dialogue to make the game more interesting (i.e. it's never really incorporated into your gameplay; it just exists).
There is neither a penalty for failure or a way to fail in the first place unless you either ignore the drones shooting at you or let the train crash into the barricades/overheat. The main gameplay element (the puzzles) have no failure conditions.
Once you finish this game once you'll never want to play it again unless you're the type that loves to speedrun.

* Definition of fair is based on the meager 1 to 1-1/2 hours of time in which the content has to be delivered.

Graphics
This game is very low-poly for most objects. There are a few assets scattered around the game (e.g. battery, gravity gun, gravity gun parts strewn about) that are very high poly by comparison, which makes me wonder why everything else is so low poly count. I have a 500-1000+ poly count gravity gun and in the other hand I have a 12-sided lump of coal.
Glitches (QC/QA)

    • The gravity beam doesn't work through perfectly wide-open holes.
    • Objects are occasionally dropped at random during teleport.
    • There's a key that appears to have no use whatsoever.
    • In the final puzzle, you and the (gravity operated) elevator are not affected by the gravity generator, despite the fact that boulders outside the lab are affected by the generator. Possibly a design decision to keep the game working, but it's more immersion breaking than anything, all for the sake of making the puzzle solution work as intended.

Footnote to Developers
The promise was of something good. But instead of letting us explore any of what's going on, you only gave us the exposition of what could have been a great game. Right where the game ended is where the opening title should have played on a much bigger game.

There is something magical about the feeling of running your own little steam-powered train. It's just you and the open rails, chugging along until something gets in the way.
The story is just subtle enough to keep you interested, and the puzzles are just hard enough to be fun while avoiding frustration. Lighting is used really creatively to provide both a spooky atmosphere and a mechanic to puzzle solving.
Easily worth $10, one of my favorite VR experiences, even if it is a bit short.

It a different take on the escape room genre in that you take the train from puzzle location to the next puzzle location removing obstacles along the way. The drones seem a little out of place and don't add a whole lot tot he game but do keep you on your toes. The game would benefit from some nice dramatice background music. For the most part I liked it. Took about an hour and a half or so to complete but there are some acheivements to be had.

Played on Oculus Rift

This is a short game that has you riding on a small train and making stops to solve puzzles to continue on your way. Its enjoyable but over before you know it and the puzzles aren't that difficult. There is a little bit of world building but it really doesn't amount to anything and then the game just ends abrubtly.

They could have done so much more with the train concept and adding a bit more story. Worth getting on sale. Its nothing mind blowing and if you've been playing VR for awhile now its not gonna wow you.

It controls on the rift just fine except its using the trigger to grab instead of the grip. Had a few crashes but that was about it.

Great atmosphere, very relaxing. Fun to operate the train. I loved the soundscape. Minimalist graphics and story. One quibble is that there was no hint system for the puzzles, which I consider essential in a VR game (and highly recommended in any game). However, not that much of a problem in this case because the puzzles are not too challenging. That said, I did have to take my headset off at one point and find a playthrough when I got stuck on one puzzle.

I enjoyed my time with this game and found it well worth the price.

i thought this was a great little 'escape room' type game. the puzzles fit the theme. it's a neat mechanism that takes you from 'room' to 'room'. there were't any real jump scares, which is good because i don't like them, but it was a bit creepy and keeps you on your toes. i did have an issue with the sound not loading a few times, and an issue with a missing tool that i needed to progress, but re-loading solved the issue every time.

great atmosphere, great game, fun stuff. can't wait for more from this team!

I would recommend this game.

I played this on the HTV Vive in room scale. My review is based on that experience.

This is a fun puzzle game with story elements. I did get frustrated on what to do when I first tried this game. I could see using a tutorial area to explain what you can do in the game. I could also be said that figuring out what you can do is part of the game.

I purchased both Abode and Conductor in a bundle when they were on sale. In my opinion, that is best way to buy these two games.

I enjoyed this game. A lot. The puzzels were nice, the gravity gun was fun, and most importantly, I loved the train. I hope to god that the devs take the train mechanics and turn it into an entirely standalone game.

A charming escape into the cockpit of an old timey steam engine. Pros: excellent style and hands on feeling to game play even with teleporting. Con: the framerate was terrible even with the shadows turned off. So felt underwater.
UPDATE: added a second SSD for VR games. Runs fine now. Very cool and atmospheric!
Nifty steampunk contraptions and gizmos to solve puzzles with. Super cool feeling of engineering a locamotive through the black of night with only a lantern and a headlamp to guide you.
Played on the Rift with 3 sensors.
If you have a happening system fire it up.

Short adventure game with environmental puzzles linked by train conducting minigame.

+ That train minigame is absolutely awesome: very atmospheric and strangely satisfying,
+ Logical and easy(but not insultingly easy) puzzles
+ Minimalistic but stylish visuals that look really good during train driving

- Very vague and basic story
- Enemy drones seem unnecessary, they mostly just spoil the atmosphere of the game
- Searching for the objects that can be interacted with is a bit annoying at times, kinda like pixel hunting in old adventure games

Overall, I highly recommend Conductor + Abode bundle: short duration of these games is easily negated by the bundle discount.

Conductor is a curious little game. You drive a small steam train from station to station and solve puzzles to clear the obstacles on the track. The game is set at night and you can't see much beyond your immediate surroundings which makes everything feel quite oppressive. Interactions can feel a little bit glitchy and there was one section where you have to enter a code but it didn't seem to accept it until I exited the game (to try and work out what I was doing wrong... nothing) and come back in to do the exact same thing again. That was frustrating.

Overall there are a few interesting puzzles but it really does feel like there isn't a whole lot to the world other than the one section of track you are travelling down. There are bits of story every now and again but you can ignore them as there is no pay off at all. The game just kind of ends. Overall, if you see it cheap, give it a go, but otherwise there are quite a lot of better escape-the-room style games out there.

A fun and intriguing VR puzzle game, the puzzles were enjoyable with a good level of complexity.
The atmosphere and little details (such as some items and lore) made it very immersive.
This game is a great example that graphics are not everything!

My only concern is that; I wish the game had more play time. I believe that there is potential for more content like conductor and I would urge Overflow to consider a possible expansion or even a sequel.

A short, fun game that lets you drive an old-style locomotive, and solve puzzles by operating equipment from oil lanterns to sci-fi level tech! It runs on linux with proton 4.11.2.

I had trouble using the teleport movement system, and my main complaint about this game would be about that. I used the valve index controllers.

    • the teleport engages too easily - simply touching the thumbpad would engage it. I teleported a lot by accident. It actually took me an embarrassingly long time to realize that I could press the trigger button (grab) without doing a teleport, because my thumb naturally rested there. The teleport also is engaged by moving the thumbstick forward. I actually prefer this way, because the thumbpad is just too easy for me to accidentally touch/press.
    • the teleport seems to be "smart" - as in it seems to lock to preferred positions, so I would have difficulty teleporting small amounts, like when I want to slightly realign my room with the locomotive.
    • the teleport sometimes shows a white path (meaning you can teleport), but when you try to teleport, it does nothing. This seems to be because it is detecting obstacles in the way. This behavior is fine, but an indication of that would be nice.

Personally, I'm a fan of using the thumbstick to "run" instead of teleport, but I also understand that it makes people uncomfortable too.

The locomotive felt very nice, though. it is definitely the center point of the game that makes it all work. I enjoyed loading the coal, releasing the pressure, etc.

Unfortunately, I found I didn't get to use the locomotive very much. At the train's highest speed (the funnest speed :) ), the distance from one stop to the next went by in about what felt like a minute or two. I would love it if the stops were put 10x or further apart so there was more time to locomote! Better yet, some sort of "infinite mode", where you just drive the train as long as you want, would be fantastic.

This was VERY good. I got stuck the first run through, but restarted it again, and completed it with relish, so the puzzles aren't too hard for the stupid people like me.. It's basically a Half-Life 2 puzzle experience (complete with a gravity gun) set at night in the woods, with a typical (and crisp) VR aesthetic. It drips with mood and atmosphere, and the lighting is superb.

It's teleport only, which might piss people off, but it shouldn't. If you have to teleport across a field or large space, than teleportation isn't ideal, but than, that experience isn't ideal either. In Conductor and other good TP games, teleporting is fine, because you don't have to traverse a huge space, and everything is closer to you. I'd rather play a VR game spaced out properly using TP locomotion, than some quasi-VR game with multiple locomotion options that dillute the experience. I don't know, I can't express this point properly, but suffice it to say, if you put in the work and design around teleportation locomotion, then it's great. Like in Skyrim or something, you end up just playing the game like the 2d version, but you're standing up in your room.

This is a great little escape the room type game. Lasts about 2 hours. I found everything to be interesting and some of the puzzles were original. My only complaint is shooting down the flying drones is annoying and in my opinion they don't add much to the game.

Adamsw216
Adamsw216

Conductor is an "Escape-The-Room" type puzzle game where you are a fugitive on the run from the mysterious Overcorp. Honestly, the story line is very thin, but it hardly matters because the puzzles themselves are interesting and engrossing. You escape from where you are being held and commandeer an old steam locomotive. It seems a little out of place considering the technology that exists in this post-apocalyptic future, but again, it doesn't really matter. The truth is, driving the train is quite fun. The train itself merely acts a means to transport you from one puzzle to the next. Occasionally, between puzzles, you are assaulted by drones sent by the Overcorp, but these are easily dispatched with the "gravity gun" you find, which also aids you in your puzzle solving. I don't really think the drone combat adds much to the game. One thing I do appreciate is that, despite the eerie nature of the setting and environment, the developers did not add any cheap jump scares or anything like that.

Overall, this is a great little puzzle game and is definitely worth a couple of bucks. I purchased mine in a bundle sale with Abode (another great escape-the-room game).

Quite challenging at times and requires you to think quite a bit of what to do. Going between levels on the train works very well and is a different way of transitioning between levels compared to other games.

It would be nice for the game to have been a bit longer, but I am looking forward to a sequel!

Occasus
Occasus

This is a fun little puzzle game, and a good example of a graphical style and implementation of mechanics that work really well with VR. There is about 2 hours of content here, and you should be able to get through the puzzles without any hints while still having to think things through in a few places. Definitely worth the $5 or so for the content you get.

Martoon
Martoon

Really solid room scale puzzle game. If you like room escape puzzles, you'll love this. Getting on the train and moving between locations gives a real sense of progress, without any motion sickness (since you're on a large vehicle moving in a straight line).

A little short, and, as with most VR games, a few awkward physical interactions. But clever puzzles and a compelling setting make this well worth the price.

Gadget Steelmare

Conductor is a comfy little puzzle game with comfy music and an enjoyable atmosphere. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I desperately wish the actual train sections were longer. There was something really comforting and enjoyable about driving a small steam engine through the night while wearing a conductor's hat.

My playtime is longer than most in this game, but that was mostly due to the fact that I spent way too much time trying to figure out what wooden things I could chuck in the engine's firebox to burn. Turns out there's a fair amount of things! (I also may have left the game running while AFK, but shhh.)

All-in-all, I really enjoyed the game, and I wish Overflow would make a sequel that's much longer. I really had a lot of fun.

Final rating: Comfy/10

A very beautiful and lovingly designed VR adventure.

Driving with the steam locomotive itself is a lot of fun. (Here you could almost make a bonus level with "Steamlock driving only")

The puzzles are lovingly designed. And if you have little experience with such puzzle games, you'll stay a little longer in the VR world until you find out how everything belongs together.

The radio to listen to music I found a very successful idea.

Thanks to the developers for this beautiful game!

Only the end of the game I would have wished a little longer. For example an extra scene with e.g. fireworks or something...

I enjoyed this slightly less than Abode for some reason, even though it was a larger affair, with an actual over-arching narrative, and a neatly realised Steampunk world.

I think perhaps it was because larger areas led to more teleporting about looking for the puzzle. Things felt more satisfying when they returned to enclosed room puzzles, armed now with a bonus physics gun. (Even if a slightly glitchy one, which was liable to spam items away unrecoverably in the more open spaces...). When they tried to go even bigger, using large external objects as the puzzle, it sometimes felt like a chore to move everything into place, rather than a playful experiment.

The central motif of a train, which you fuel by hand to get between the locations, was cute. But it didn't really feel like added a huge amount beyond vibe. (It would have been nice if the engine had powered a puzzle at some points perhaps). Still a fine little indie puzzler hour or so for a couple of quid ;)

Youch!

I bought this game on a 70% off sale and I liked it. I did struggle with a few of the puzzles due to items not quite working as expected. In the first case I put a handle in the right location but it didn't attach so I spent the next 30 minutes trying other solutions. I watched a walkthru video and was rather annoyed that to discover that the handle placement was a bit fussy. There was one other puzzle which talked about finding "something stronger" to break into a tower. I spent more time trying to find the "something stronger" only to discover from a walkthru that it wasn't needed. The final puzzle was very tricky and once again I had to consult a walkthru. The effects of the turbine were far to slow/subtle for me to realize there was also left/right control. Despite needing help to solve nearly half the puzzles I had fun.

Got this in a sale. It is a fun, short puzzle game, which just drew me in with its atmosphere. Simple graphics and simple puzzles, nonetheless super enjoyable. Riding the train is so much fun, i actually found myself wanting longer distances between stops.
One little problem i encountered though was that after loading a save, looking up caused me to glitch through the floor.
I had to start a new game but, given the length of it, that wasn't a big deal. Overall, if you like puzzle games, you might wanna give this one a try. If you like trains, give it a go. If you like puzzles and trains ... well... i guess then its a no-brainer...

Wow... I'm kinda blown away by this game. As far a escape rooms go, this is easily one of the best I've played. The worst thing about this game is that it suddenly ended! I wanted more! So much more! So there are five or six "rooms" to solve and the whole game won't take much more than an hour to solve, but that's going to be an hour full of puzzle solving fun. The puzzles are challenging and have a great variety. Graphics are somewhat simple, but effective and good-looking. Traversing from puzzle to puzzle by a steam train (hence the name of the game) is strangely soothing and fun. Overall very fun game, just way too short. I could have driven on forever. :)

It's pretty good overall. The overall experience is about 2 hours (my time is a little more because I restarted the game after not playing it for a little while). The atmosphere and puzzles are pretty good. I was able to figure out all the puzzles without looking up a guide, which is always a plus for me.

But the game is buggy and janky as hell. And the ending...to say that the game "just ends" would be an understatement. I also didn't care for the flying robots. I actually enjoyed riding the train, so to need to fight the robots...which aren't a challenge at all...was super annoying.

Overall, I'd recommend it as long as you get it on sale (I got it for $3 and I'm glad I didn't spend more than that).

Fun little game. The puzzles were pretty easy but still fun. The premise is that you’re on a small train and you get stopped by a blocked path occasionally and you have to solve puzzles to clear the path and keep going. If you’ve ever played ‘FAR: Lone Sails’ this is kinda like a 3D VR version of that. I beat it in 2 hours. I think it’s worth the price.

This game seemed like it would be fun, but I didn't progress too far due the game crashing frequently when I would use my left joystick to teleport. Even though you can use the right joystick as well, I kept forgetting and using the left for motion by habit so crashes ruined the experience for me. I have no idea why left/right would be any different, and no other game I played besides this one crashes with the left. I figured I should post though in case anyone else had this problem and then maybe it would be worth it for the devs to look into it.

I would still recommend this game, it seems well made and I wanted to play more. Puzzles weren't too difficult in the beginning, not sure about later. The only thing besides the crashing was that the weights/physics just didn't feel quite right, but for $5 on the Summer Sale, it would definitely be worth it.

Awesome little escape room-like game but takes place along a stretch of railroad track. The puzzles aren't anything too difficult, but are well done and satisfying enough when you complete them. Although this is an older title, the style of the graphics style holds up well. The game actually gave me goosebumps now and then because of the atmosphere - all around you is dark woods and every now and then there is a rustle of leaves and you can turn on the radio on the train and tune in to a great rhythmic track that helps add to the atmosphere.
Not a super long game. Took me just over an hour to complete, but if you like well done puzzle games (difficult or not) this is a must buy (along with the Developer's other titles, Abode and Abode 2). This is also a great experience if you'd like to show off just how cool VR can be to friends or family, and they have about an hour to hang out and play through (teleportation keeps people without their VR legs from getting queezy).
I would say it is probably worth the full price of $9.99, but I picked it up during a sale for $4.99 - a steal at that price! Will most likely uninstall and let sit in my steam library and once I have forgotten the puzzles, play it again!

Played on the Oculus Rift S.

Picked up on the Steam summer sale as part of a bundle, making this title work out at just over £3 - would say get on a sale. A decent puzzle game and enjoyed the puzzle and atmosphere. However, having completed the game in 2.3 hours it's a little low on the value for game length side of things, however, it''ll be a good title to show beginners to VR, albeit the train can be relatively fast on the highest speed setting for newcomers.

Xavier: Renegade Angel
Xavier: Renega…

This is a rare VR game that is far better than it has any right to be. It hits that perfect length (80-90 mins) and the puzzles are complicated enough to make you think but not so much that you'll be diving for a walkthrough halfway into it. If anything I wish the devs made the stretches in between 'levels' longer and more chill. A 30-40 second train ride required multiple loads of coal, enemies to deal with, impending next stops to deal with, etc. While none of these are bad on their own, I kinda just wanted to be keep riding and soak up the atmosphere a bit. But if that's my biggest complaint with a puzzle game then they did something right.

All the same problems as Abode 1.
- No Index support (it runs, but the controllers don't match)
- Things randomly fall out of your hands while you're holding them
- Clicking the trigger on things to interact with them is extremely fiddly
- Motion sickness
- No teleport
- Not able to flick turn. As far as I can tell, it's not possible to turn at all so you get tangled in the cable.

Adventure! Physics puzzles!

A little weak in on gameplay, as the controls are hard to manage. Some of the environment object don't react quite the way I expected.

I've played close to an hour of this game at the time of writing this and I can say that this is one of the better VR games that I have played to date. I can tell that a lot of love was put into this game and it really shows. I see so many asset flip vr games on steam and I am glad that games like this exist. I feel like the gun that you get is quite similar to the gravity gun from the half life series. I love how it's used in the game's puzzles and gameplay. It's also got what seems to be an interesting story (only played an hour). I totally recommend this to anyone who is disapointed with a lot of vr games out there right now.

This game has a nice atmosphere. I find it more enjoyable than Abode, since that game felt a bit claustrophobic. In Conductor you're actually on the move, on a small adventure rather, and with a nice and soothing soundtrack. I did very much enjoy this game on my Valve Index, even though native controller support is lacking. Its age is definitely starting to show in 2020, so bear that in mind. Some puzzles are not that intuitive, and the story ends really abruptly. If you go into this not expecting much, you'll be pleasantly surprised. Just don't play it after you've already played some AAA titles, perhaps your experience won't be as good.

I have very mixed feeling about this game. The mechanics and puzzles are fine, the ambiance is great, BUT there are two big issues :
- huge performance/graphic issues, I'm having really important stutters that make the game not enjoyable to play at all
- physics engine issues, sometimes the world stays broken after you restart after a collision, sometimes items in your g-gun inventory get lost under the ground... and the only way to fix this is to save, back to menu, and restart (and lose some progress in the process). Considering I encountered all those issues in just 45 minutes of play... I definitely can't give this a thumbs up (although I'd love to).

Issues encountered on
- Ryzen 3600
- GTX970
- Occulus Rift S

I'll try again when I get my next graphic card upgrade, but I'm not even sure it will fix the stutter, it's not like the game is graphics heavy.

I was playing this game almost a year ago, and it's a good, solid experience. Puzzles are not too difficult and fun to solve. Riding on the train is feels good with all interactivity like throwing coal into the furnace and lighting the fire. The environment is simple but has a good atmosphere and sounds which create a good immersion. But, if you already played in games like Alix or Boneworks it might feel too simple, so be ready for that.

solid mechanics, interesting story line, not too much story to get in the way of the game play

I really enjoyed this experience, the suspense that comes from the atmosphere of the game was great, I even got a bit of spookiness out of it (the silence could get nerve-wrecking for me in the darkness). The puzzles were good, you had to have good look around to solve them, but not impossibly hard. Recommended.

Good puzzle game with a bit of a story and an eerie atmosphere.
Most puzzles were easy to medium difficulty. I got stuck 3 times and checked out a walkthrough to progress. It took me 2.5 hours to complete.
Only teleport movement but that’s not an issue for me.

I would rate this a yeah but not just cause i liked the game, cause the game itself could be fun if you like such games. Its less a "game" and more of a ride...so yeah i rate it positive but personally i would say more a Maybe

This is a very nice little game. Puzzle are a challenge but once you get going on this you will like it. Its a rather short game to get through but it provided a lot of fun and unique challenges.

I don't know if this game needs a "Pros" and "cons" list or anything. It's just a fun game. It's short, sweet, and simple. The visual style is great, it reminds me of a combination of western and steampunk combined, it's awesome. The Gravity tool was really fun to use, and led to some very nice puzzles. Driving the train was fun of course.

This game is fun for what it is, but again it is quite short. I completed it in under 2 hours, but had a very good time doing so. I feel if the game had a smooth-moving system to go along side the teleporting, it would help with fine movements. I found myself fumbling on top of the train when trying to take down drones whilst also throwing coal into the train.

Other from these little nitpicks, the puzzles were fun, the different settings were mysterious and fun to explore, the underlying mystery still has me asking questions which I hope for some sort of DLC, Sequel, heck even an update to answer.

Over all, I totally suggest this game. It's a cool game to chill and play in your own time, to watch and listen to the world around you, to piece together a hidden story, and solve some puzzles. Just be sure not to crash your train. Eyes on the tracks.

There are games there with amazing graphics, lots of details but you play 5 minutes and you are done, this game got my whole attention from the beginning, puzzles are not super difficult but not easy, you get your sense of accomplishment in every "stop". I played with Valve Index without any issues, controllers were easy to use. it took me a little less than 2 hours and I think it was missing some Steam achievements because there are so many little extra things you can do. It's a 2017 VR game but it's stable, free of bugs and again, I kept playing late because I wanted to know what was the next puzzle. I recommend get this game on one of the Steam sales events. usually I play puzzle games at night, something relaxing and entertaining to calm my mind instead of watching tv. I recommend this game :)

This game is a fun but short trip from the early days of VR.

The game goes in stages, where you travel for a bit, then stop and solve a puzzle or two to allow travel again. This way, the type of actions you perform alternate, so you aren't stuck doing one thing. The puzzles are simple enough that you don't get frustrated, and early on used the VR controls fairly well.

The game is not long, which means it doesn't overstay it's welcome. Keep in mind that it's short to determine if the price is right for you. I thought it was, but that's a subjective call.

Overall, a nice and short VR game, fun while it lasts.

I haven't played a lot of VR puzzle games, but this one is probably one of my favorites. It might be because I find something appealing about trains and it was quite fun to manage a little engine and shovel coal and stuff, lol. Even gave me a little spook despite nothing particularly graphic or jump scary, it's just very atmospheric.
