Pretty fun to run around and kill stuff, super easy to play. Music isnt the greatest for hours of play. As of this version last challenge is unbeatable, with any hero or combo of skills/lvl ups . Consider temp items from tavern or greater buffs to player, I look forward to new maps and hordes to murder

It's quite a nice game. You can finish all content in 7-10 hours, but I think it's okay for an Early Access title and there are rooms for improvement here. I was looking for something similar to Vampire Survivors (after beating it 100% percent) and Crimson Dawn is the next best in this genre. Good luck to development team, will be looking forward for updates!

A fun little game for those who enjoy the survivor genre. Weapon and character upgrade system is neat. Can be a bit of a slog at first, but once you've maxed out your first character and at least their starting weapons, the game gets MUCH easier to farm resources. Good updates so far, looking forward to more!

This is one where I'd give a neutral review if that were possible.

First impression was that it's budget Vampire Survivors, and that impression held up throughout the game. It took about 6.5 hours to 100% the game (all achievements, all in-game progression unlocked, all content completed), which is fine for a $3 game.

The main problem is that your success is largely tied to metaprogression. With no meta upgrades, it's essentially impossible to complete 2 missions in the first map (each map has 5 missions, and you can choose how many you want to take when you start; the level ends when all missions you took are complete). With all of the meta upgrades, you can literally AFK all 5 missions in the first map. The other two maps are not appreciably more difficult.

There's multiple classes, which are largely defined by their starting loadouts (you can change their starting weapons, but most have restrictions on what you can take), and a skill tree which tends to focus on 2 or 3 different weapons. The upgrades are extreme (in some cases multiplying the damage of a given weapon by 5x to 10x its base value), so you're largely beholden to use whatever your chosen class specializes in.

Weapons themselves also have upgrades, which improve them at each upgrade level; once again, the difference between an unupgraded weapon and a fully upgraded one is extreme.

I am confident that a brand new player could try a run with all of the meta upgrades, and would have a trivial time winning; this pretty much exemplifies the problem I have with the game - it's 95% metaprogression, 5% skill, if that.

Bosses drop items that give boosts, but there are very few of them and their effects are very unexciting. They're mostly things like "+30% crit chance, -30% movement speed" or "+50% weapon size, +25% firing delay", with a few interesting ones like making enemies explode on death mixed in; none of them feel very interesting, and you typically see all of them in any given run, so there's no opportunity to get a "build-defining" item and have a unique run because of it.

This may all sound pretty negative, but for the time it lasts, it's a reasonably fun experience. It will entertain you for a few hours then promptly be forgotten; for $3, that's fine.

Hopefully as the game progresses through early access, some of these issues are addressed.

Stellar game. Easy to get going and understand, a lot of fun typical RPG elements in it with a bit of its own spin on things. Nice progression pace through the levels, its difficulties, character upgrades and their weapons along side getting the new characters. Hoping it gets expanded on.

This game seems more difficult than its counterparts, but something about this one has me returning over and over. Sure, the overall upgrades 'feel' slower and your progression route because of it feels the same, but theres something very cool here.

I've played MANY of these types of games and at review time I've played 1,9 hours. I guess my playtime after this point is going to be testament to how good this game is.

One thing it definitely has going for it is it's ability to feel 'classic'. I love the style, the critters and the loop, it feels oldschool in ways that others wish they could.

Devs... This is a fine idea and so far great execution. Please sort the menu's out, so they make more sense and I dont HAVE to use the digital pad to move around. A bit of polish here and there and I really feel this will be a winner.

It's not ready for release.
Is it bad? Not really. Is it good enough to exist in the same universe as Vampire Survivors and get a positive review? No. It lacks content, any sort of meaningful progression and relies on stat growth and grindwalls to extend its playtime.

It's good. Not Vampire Survivors good, but good.

In all seriousness, the game is good. There's nothing visually fancy, but if you're looking for something similar to VS this should give you what you want. There's 12 weapons, 5 characters, 3 stages, and some permanent upgrades. No fancy passive abilities or weapon merges (that I've seen).

Just don't be a silly goose like I was. When you select the mission you're doing for a map, you can select all 5 difficulties, which I thought would unlock the prior goals as I completed them. I was wrong. For example, to unlock level 5 blacksmith upgrades, you need only survive 90 seconds and then kill 400 enemies. I've done this twice, but never got level 5 upgrades because I died before surviving 500 seconds following the 400 enemies. So I 'completed' the goal but died, nulling the goal. Thus, if I'd only selected the first and second missions, I would already have upgraded my weapons (some of them at least) to level five. Well, you live and learn I suppose.

Pros: nice graphics and addictive gameplay (for an hour or two).
Cons: inconvenient interface, very little content (14 weapons, 10 artifacts, 5 heroes and three maps), unfinished third map.

This game is very light on content compared to others in the genre. While $4 isn't much of an asking price, there's simply not a lot on offer in a genre full of choices at similar prices. The mission system makes for nice discrete goals, but mostly exists in service of a metaprogression grind focused on stat pumping. There are no weapon evolutions, and the metaprogression upgrades involve things like unlocking the ability to roll improvements on basic weapon attributes (area, more projectiles, etc.) that must be purchased for each weapon individually. Additionally, each character has a tree of upgrades discouraging experimentation by making options with less investment noticeably weaker.

Despite the release announcement, there was no accompanying update unless you count the one a month prior which came without mention of the end of early access. The release announcement seems to indicate that the developer considers the product complete so I wouldn't expect much in the way of improvement.

The framework is here and there is a lot to like about the game play and progression. It just needs more content! Wouldn't mind paying for a DLC that added more characters, maps, weapons, etc. If money for development is an issue, just communicate that and release DLC to fund it!

Well, the invested work and effort is evident in this survival RPG bullet hell, but my feelings are mixed about the possibilites and progress, especially after sleeper hit Vampire Survivors. It is addicting but something is missing.

This game is a little slower paced than typical games in the bullet hell genre but that kind of works toward crimson dawn's benefit. The sprites are well animated and there exists a wide variety in monster type. You are able to begin the game as one of 3 classes and are able to unlock even more classes by playing the game. Fun Fun Fun.

Im having fun with this survivor game. It is quite decent with alot of stuffs to unlock. There is many abilities to choose from. It is fun to watch my skills destroying the horde on screen. My only issue is the very bad feedback on enemy hitting my character.

I like meaningless games, most games are, but this is a kinda shallow meaninglessness. The developer could at least have given me the slightest hint of an illusion why i have killed hordes of monsters. "Where they hungry? Were they just on an afternoon break? Did I actually invade their forest?"
Adding to this is the strange mechanic of "mercenaries". Why are they willing to die for me? And why don't i ever need to pay them?

This game really just leaves you with too many questions and too little content.

I really enjoy playing this game. It's neither frustrating (due to rewards even when you die) nor too easy.
Yes, you need to grind to get resources and level up, otherwise this game would be done in 2 hours.

It's very easy and relaxing to play, I enjoy the music and the different level-mechanics eventhough it gets really tough later on. And honestly it's as cheap as it gets.
Looking forward to future updates

I can't wait for this game to be steam deck verified and get more classes, maps, weapons, and a larger sink for materials you aquire. Its quite easy to unlock everything in the game and there isn't much yet, but its still in early access. If you're playing on the Steam Deck, you might have to use the touch screen for some things. Overall, there is potential for Crimson Dawn and I've had 10 hours of fun with it so far.

I know it's early access and I can see a potentially good game loop, but the way difficulty ramps up is ridiculous. You go from being able to handle the amount of enemies with the help of running around to not being able to handle them once you hit the 4th tier on any map. Normally, the difficulty increase can be fun, but since there is literally no buff that increases damage, eventually the enemies have more health and come in faster than you can kill them. Unfortunately, the end result is that it kills the fun and I cannot recommend the game.

A solid VS-like game, although a bit too grindy, since you have to unlock and power-up a lot of the things to reach the end. There's less skill or luck involved, as compared to VS. On the bright side, it also lets you sort of customize your playstyle and play in shorter sessions.

I personally love games like these, like vampire survivors, like rogue genesia and so on.
I got 100% achievements for this game as well.

Sadly I feel like it still lacks a lot when you compare it to the games mentioned above.
The weapons just don't feel as fullfilling as in other games, they dont have this satisfying feeling when you max them out.
There is no weapon evolution or something similar, its just the same weapons every time and the same "small" upgrades, if you max a weapon its not getting super powerful, no it just gets a bit increased stats and thats it, maybe the developer will figure something out with that, because the game has definitely potential.

Even though the game is far from perfect, it's still worth the low price it costs.

There is work behind and it feels. It does not look or play exactly like Vampire Survivor there are a lot of subtil differences in the gameplay, sound and graphic and the meta is quite different.

It is fun, and I love the RPG elements. But if I knew how much content the game would have, I would've picked another in the genre to buy.

It's still a decent game for $4 USD. There just isn't anything to do once the character trees are filled and you have 100% on the three maps. Others in the genre offer so much more.

The_Incapacitator
The_Incapacitator

Unfortunately it's pretty awful. Control mapping on the front page isn't working correctly, there's very little to do, you collect a load of resources for fairly unknown reasons, the hitboxes in game aren't accurate.

There are loads of alternatives in this genre that play better for much the same price (and cheaper).

A fun Vampire Survivors like with a hub town that lets you spend resources to determine precisely which how your skills evolve in future runs. It's also interesting that runs are completed once you achieve the goals you set for yourself at the start of the run with more difficult goals giving you a bigger multiplier to the resources you gathered on your current run.

What's here is fun, although there is very little and it won't take long to max everything. The problem is the developers have scammed us. Let me explain.

The last game update of any kind was on March 8, 2023. https://steamcommunity.com/games/1919720/announcements/detail/364964312…

On April 4th they announce they are leaving Early Access on April 11th. https://steamcommunity.com/games/1919720/announcements/detail/587892692…

On April 11th, today, the game officially leaves Early Access. https://steamcommunity.com/games/1919720/announcements/detail/369918525…

The problem is there has been no game update of any kind between March 8th and now, April 11th. I know because I bought the game in early April when I saw announcement of the full release, and it's been installed the whole time. And in that time there has been no update. Checking the game now there are no new characters or levels or content so I'm not mistaken. When I bought the game in anticipation of the full release, I expected a patch of some kind, even if it was just bug fixes. Instead they leave Early Access in name only. So if this wasn't a scam, if there wasn't additional content and fixes they intended to release, then why didn't they leave Early Access on March 8th? They knew this beforehand and revealed it on Discord but not Steam: https://imgur.com/a/8G5QOvY. I buy games on Steam, not discord. They should've told us here, in the April 4th announcement.

It appears the devs didn't want to work on the game more, knew it was in an acceptable and unbroken state, albeit incomplete, and so just left Early Access to get rid of that moniker.

If that doesn't bother you then I still can't recommend the game except on a good sale because there's very little content here. Only 5 characters, 3 maps, and a dozen weapons. There are no weapon evolutions, no interesting ways to play the game, and maxing the meta upgrades is fast and easy. You simply earn the resources and then max the stats on a weapon and you're done with it.

Also I just noticed that on the store page there is proof this is a scam, that the game is incomplete. You can see the character roster and there are silhouettes for 8 characters but we only got 5: https://imgur.com/a/qeM7nim. Also now that I think about it, there are more buildings on the main menu that I assumed would get unlocked at some point for more upgrades and features, but no they don't do anything. It's just the 3 buildings in the front and portal and that's it.

Do not support scamming, lying devs. There are tons of other, better Survivor games.

cracatoa

The bare bones of a fantastic game are here, but nothing else. Very few characters. Very few weapons. No weapon evolutions. They removed this from "early access" with no update, and have yet to respond to those looking for an answer as to "why?". Last update was over a month ago.

Save your money.

Can't leave Early Access without any content patch for release. Its shady arse tactics like this is why i hate Early Access, pretty much implement a faith based system where you can support developers works early, only for developers to never finish the game, release it, or even fix it.

Then again when people throw money at you why wouldn't you run not like anyone can stop them.

This is a good game. This is a very good game. But this was released out of early access way too quickly. The content Available is almost the same amount of content available when it was in EA which is very disappointing because what's here is amazing but it's just lacking. I wish i could recommend this game but in it's "current" state, I Just cannot.

Don't listen to the nay sayers, most people are such cry babies. it is not even fun to release a game to that kind of gamer.
This little gem is very different, and very well made. My only complain would be the sound loop is too short but that is easy to fix, I put my own music. Other than that 10/10 for the rest of the game. Love it. It is different enough to be it's own game.

I bought it in early access and enjoyed it at first, and had high hopes for it. Get something similar like Soulstone Survivors or Vampire Survivors instead- both have significantly more content and are more refined than this.

I could've write a positive review, but I'm tired of writing it, so no...

What's wrong? The developer did exactly the same thing with his game and now sells it to full price. It was said that in the future there will be 8 unique characters and 5 levels in total. Guess what, now you have only 5 characters and 3 levels, and the last level feels unfinished and slightly unbalanced if compared to others. It's not impossible, but because of some groups of enemies that can drop your hp from 100 to 0 in a moment, it feels like it is.
There's no difference between """full""" release version and the last version from EA. Only the signs of future content magically dissapeared (like 3 other silhouettes of characters, or mysterious second tab in a tavern (I saw somewhere that there were supposed to be a quests)). And if you take only the content that is already in this game... there is not much of it.
Sure, this game has some interesting stuff like skill tree for every character and upgrading weaponry, but that's it. But the most "fun" thing here is that the price of this game is twice as much as it was in EA, but the game itself hasn't chanded.

Final judgement: Good ideas, undone implementation. Not recommend, even with discount.

Appears to be a decent Vampire Survivors clone on the surface, but is severely lacking in content & polish. Promised features like weapon evolutions or more characters were scrapped as the game abruptly exited Early Access. After launch developers ceased communication on Steam forums & Discord despite several complaints posted months ago about bugs that affect a small percentage of players (controller issues, problems triggering an achievement, problems starting the game). Stay away & buy one of the countless other better games in this genre.

TLDR: Count me in with the other negative reviews; the devs here overpromised and underdelivered, and you can see their excuses here. Stay far away from this one.

I won't pretend to know their reasons for doing it, but it looks as if they took the cash and ran with it. What currently exists in the game is unlocked far too quickly, and what little that entails offers little variety or incentive for your money.

Rogue: Genesia, Spellbook Demonslayers, and Halls of Torment are examples of the genre that offer better gameplay and production values than this abandoned heap. Give them your money instead, they actually deserve it.

Decent vampire survivors like game - I think the genre name is either reverse bullet hell or wave survival, or something like that, but its a vampire survivor clone.

Its fun - you don't feel like a superhero, but there's some different characters, weapons and upgrades, so it's pretty fun.

It would be cool if there are more content over time, more weapons, synergies and scope for builds.

Seeing as there are about a thousand vampire survivor clones on steam now, and 90% are quite poor/threadbare, this is in the upper echelons. I would recommend giving it a try!

My first impressions of Crimson Dawn are good. The presentation is nice (visuals and sound) and I like that there's a town where you advance your meta progression. The gameplay is a little slower than other bullet heavens, but it ramps up with your choices of course. I've only played one of the classes since it does take a bit of gold to unlock others. Weapon skill trees and character skill trees offer even more power and are upgraded with materials earned from sessions.

The task/goal aspect of the game is interesting and I like that you're collecting a lot of different resources to buy unlocks.

I'm on the Steam Deck and having no real issues. I changed the resolution and that required a restart, but that was my only issue. Controls work fine, but text is a bit on the small side.

Another entry in the "be the bullet hell" genre the Vampire Survivors spearheaded on Steam. Crimson Dawn (CD) looks nice and plays smoothly. The roguelike upgrade system is based on materials accumulated during play and serves as an interesting base for further expansion.

The main weakness so far is perceived lack of content. There's very little difference between the three characters - they all use the same weapon sets, and the small advantages granted by their upgrade trees don't feel like much. There's also just two maps, and the difficulty scaling at the top end seems off. You can have all the upgrades unlocked and still be struggling to clear the first waves of the second map.

Still recommended for fans of the genre given the friendly price point and the promise of further content. This isn't one of the awful lazy VS clones thrown out on Steam to make a quick buck.

Having played like 20 of these, this was maybe the most average out of all of them. It has nice new elements of progression. But it feels incredibly grindy and overtly linear.

Game looks like it could be lots of fun in the future. Still in early stages now I would say. Worth checking out if still $3.

slapper game, the music is great, and as barebones as it is i got 8 good hours of playtime (and i haven't finished everything yet). very fun game, totally recommended

Crimson Dawn is a fun Vampire Survivors-like that is still very much in the early stages. Don't buy this now if you're expecting a fleshed out game. But still I highly recommend experiencing the current state of the game given the price is very reasonable.

This review's coming from a true addict of these types of games. I play almost every one of them, even the bad ones lol.
This game is an absolute banger as soon as you start your first run. Controls are spot on, hitboxes seem fair, the pacing is great but where it truly shines is with the amount of upgrades.
So to start out with, it uses the system where each level up gives you 5-6 choices, each rolling with a quality tier (white, green, blue so far).
Then when in the town hub you get access to a blacksmith who will let you use materials on a skilltree for each individual weapons.
While playing you'll gain 3 types of materials as well as gold and XP shards.
The gold is used to buy additional characters and buy character specific buffs inside of their respective skilltree.
To be honest, as of today, 2-3 days after release, the game already has more polish then some of his rivals 1 year after launch.
Its a steal at this price and you should absolutely give it a go if you're into games like Vampire survivors, nomad survivals etc...

I like the music, old school graphics and the progression system with buying upgrades :) For that small price the game offers great fun/price ratio quality. I wait for more updates to come. Definitely worth to get the game and to chill killing those pesky bugs! :D

I'm always tempted to give a positive review if there's good bones to a game, but here we have a market oversaturated with swarm survival games. So what does this game bring to it that others don't?

Well, nothing really. It's still in development so that could change, but as of right now you collect resources to unlock permanent upgrades for your weapons, which number around 9-10. Very low compared to many swarm survival games, as the different combinations are what make these games fun. If I combine my guns with birds, my gun now shoots flaming birds kinda stuff. None of that here yet.

I'd wishlist it and watch it, unless you can afford to throw away $3. If you can, then man def worth it. That said, I reached endgame of current content in the time listed above and I'm now just waiting on more content to drop.

Its like getting a wedgie from a bully, except the bully doesnt know that you peg yourself daily and that you are into stuff going up yo butt, then you start making one of those faces that the bully mistakes for a face of discomfort n he thinks that you hate this, so he pulls the wedgie even harder, and you blow the biggest best load of your life. then the bully realizes whats going on n it turns out that he is also an avid pegger too n yall become good friends, end up marrying each other's sisters and becoming brothers-in law and secretly peg each other at family events for the next 30 years and counting.

A rare gem that takes the Survivor genre to the next level, complex mechanics, engaging gameplay, great meta progression (almost unparalleled). A must buy and a must play for EVERYONE.

Highly recommend this product.

Yet another VS clone ; better than the average clones quality, especially since this review was made for the very first release and more is expected to come. Has potential, would recommend for VS clone fans.

Initial early access has less content and mechanics than similar types (Rogue : Genesia, Soulstone, Spellbook Demonslayers, etc).

Giving a thumbs up since it just released and we will see where new content takes this game.
As of now; its a very bare bones Vampire Survivor with pretty slow progression mechanics.

Very nice BH/VS game. Lots of upgrades and interesting things going on. Good sense of progression. Excellent initial effort for Early Access.

Haven't played much and only tried the one class (Huscarl) but it's off to a great start! I was playing on the Steam Deck too and it worked fine. Promising beginning, I like the challenges mechanic where you only stay in a level until you've completed the challenges then you get your rewards and go back to town to spend them.

Looking forward to seeing how it develops!

I really like this game, and it has to potential to be as good and perhaps even better than Vampire Survivors..

But right now, there is a super annoying like 5 second long music track that just loops over and over and over and becomes super annoying. Yes, you can turn the music all the way down to 0, but I do like some good music that fits the game. The best solution for this game is for the developer to change that BS out for some real music as in a real song that fits his game.

Other than that, the ray attacks are super bizarre looking as they aren't connected to your character. Not a huge thing, but it just makes this game look really weird and even "rushed", when it's really a pretty damn good game from my first impressions.

The art, the power-up and attack choices are all very well done here. This game is sooo close to being a GREAT game for just the small $3 asking price here on launch day.

As it is, I give this game a 7 out of 10 score and ask the developer to make his game batter than his launch day competitor, another similar 'Vampire Survivor' style indie game that launched the same day here on Steam:

Recommended. I challenged both of these indie developers in this video above to try and beat out the other game. Let's see who puts out the most and best updates in the coming days and weeks!

I've tried a few of these style of games now but this is the only one that is as fun and addictive as VS - perhaps more so.
