SERIOUS, MOODY & MYSTERIOUS- A thoroughly enjoyable HOPA. It hits all the right notes with me. The graphics are clear, with neutral colors, and have an almost painting like quality. I love these kinds of graphics. The story is serious and not childish, infact there's nothing for children here. You collect hints along the way, and I did need to use them a few times. I loved the way 'dilapidated' is done, and there was no lag in the story. 12 or so HOPS to play, of wordlists, with some items requiring a further step. The game is chaptered into sections -you can't roam freely. You can change difficulty levels during the game.

I really liked a particular feature of this game (which I don't come across in most HOPA games), which was that the chapters are saved automatically! Maybe that's a feature of 'Steam' ? Anyway, it's a great, and features under the Menu option as 'Load.' I experienced a glitch of an item not going into the inventory, and I was able to instantly pick up the game again, by choosing the most recent save option.

This is a very good HOG, what I liked the most were the mini games, they all required quite a bit of thought. It is nice to be challenged on puzzles instead of basically the same thing in HOGs. I decided to leave the game loaded on my computer so I can go back later and do them all over again because I liked the mini games that much. IF you are looking for a bit of a challenge I recommend this highly.

This is the worst game I have ever played. There was no help from the hints on many occasions and the puzzles were severly confusing with extremely poor instructions. The story line rambles on with an unclear direction. It's dismal and depressing.

I liked the game, the puzzles and HOGs were a little different then usual. Some of the puzzles were way too hard though, even though was able to finish most of them a couple couldn't even find anyone solving them on the internet. Some of the ones that did solve took awhile to see what they wanted. Think they could have done a little more with the crossroads demon than they did. Going to have to try again. That card game was hard to understand and lost. I kinda don't want to recommend it, but since it was so different from the normal ones and the artwork was great I will.

The puzzles were really confusing and the instructions were too vague. It played like a game that is much older. It seemed pretty clunky.

Confusing ending, wtf, what even happened? Did someone die, did someone live? The story was left way too open. Confusing puzzles and controversial instructions (for example remove yellow tiles, when actually meaning shit under the tiles, not actual yellow tiles). Wasted money even though the game was on sale.

As hidden object type games go, this one is just OK - barely recommended - I give it 6.5 out of 10. If you like hidden object games, put it in your wishlist and wait for it to go on sale.

โ€ข It is short, good for about 3-4 hours of playing time.
โ€ข The plot is a bit confusing to be honest - you play as Anna, a young woman trying to unravel events from her past.
โ€ข The artwork for the locations and objects is well done - on par with similar games.
โ€ข The hidden object scenes are nicely drawn - again on par with similar games. I did not run into any clues that were unclear.
โ€ข The puzzles are pretty easy, but the instructions were not always clear so you may need some trial and error to understand what they are looking for.
โ€ข I did like the way the background objects shudder in response to a mouse click.
โ€ข You should not have too much trouble collecting all of the achievements if you are so inclined. This is an easy perfect game.

Seemed like the story was lacking, the puzzles were a bear and every time you used the hint help button it took points away. Was not a bad game just didn't meet expectations. The main reason I wouldn't recommend this game is because of the mini games. There was not a lot of direction and took a lot away from playing the game because I wound up skipping them.

I didn't mind the story line. I liked that it would finish one scenerio and then go on to the next. But I did experience severe drag and the hints to earn were really hard to see.

I really liked this game. It was different from other point and clicks, had a good story, and had an actually challenging expert mode. I didn't really understand what the ending was all about, but I enjoyed the rest of the game.

Thumb slightly up. This game is basically OK. The story is only mildly interesting, but the game does have some cool puzzles, most of which are pretty easy, but at least two of which are fairly complex. I spent over an hour on the gear and mirror puzzles together. The music and images are nice and the voices are OK.

There are two spots in the game where you have to choose between two options. Picking the wrong one will cause your character to die, whereupon you have to reload the game and choose the other option (so what's the point?).

The HOGs are OK, containing visible objects and objects you have to uncover. I did find myself doing some pixel hunting to find hot spots and useable items because sometimes it wasn't obvious what needed to be done. There were a few English words in the HOG lists that I consider to be incorrect, such as "hairbrush" for a comb.

I found the card gambling game at the very end to be quite annoying as I don't gamble or play these kinds of games, so I had no feel on how to play it. My husband managed to beat it.

The map, which is supposed to indicate which rooms contains available actions, in several instances showed nothing even though there was something I could do. This was especially true throughout most of the hospital scenes.

There is no bonus chapter and there are no extra features.

If you want to give this game a go, pick it up on sale.

I really can't recommend this game. Every part of what you collect must be in sequence, even if you're trying to collect other items you need. Hidden areas appear only after other objectives are filled. Very painful to play.

Impracticalmagic
Impracticalmagic

Short version: 7.5 (I'm glad I played it, but I'm glad I got it on sale and bundled)

Long version:

Atmospheric, good music, appropriately creepy art. Not horror (except for one partly-seen burn victim), just well-staged shivers. One or two places that feel unexplained or just... odd.

Steam achievements are easy, because they are only story-based (not skill, challenge, or collectible based). A number of the puzzles are challenging.

Hidden object scenes are generally good, and the story keeps you wanting more - except it feels like you never quite get the "more" you want. I suspect that the story is clearer, and therefore more satisfying, in the game's first language. The translation is fine (with a few small errors), but it makes the story a little flat - at least, that's my guess. Either way, a bit more of an intro and a bit more of a conclusion would improve the game for sure.

Overall, still recommended if you enjoy adventure-HOG games, but it doesn't have the wealth of detail that makes for a really strong game of this kind. Interesting the first time, very little replayability. The demon is evil. I'm worse at poker than I realized.

Out of the 3 games I've played from these developers (Ashley Clark games + The broken deal) I liked this one the most. It had a good story, I didn't feel I had to backtrack so long as previous games, and everything made sense. The music fit with the game, and everything seem to be made with a thought of mind.

Let's start with the end of the game. When I finished I had an extra key in my inventory, I think it was the lighthouse key. Normally these things vanish when you have used them, but this one stuck with me. Also even though the game was very satisfying the ending was not. I have absolutly no idea what happened, and it sucks! It kinda ruins the last moments of the game, when everything else made sense and was exciting.

Tbh. I don't think there is really much more to say about the game. It had an exciting story, it all made sense, and I got through the entire game without using any hints. I was sometimes stuck, but came back and finished it. The most common way to be stuck was encountering a hard puzzle. I liked the game and I recommend it.

Do not trust the demon!

it's an okay game but there are some fairly tedious points...
the back-n-forth between scenes to complete puzzles for example. you wander around, picking up stuff (if you manage to figure out you're supposed to and what, that is) and then trotting back to whatever scene/room you Hope that piece of junk goes to. there's not a lot to the game aside from that. some puzzles, some ho scenes... but mostly convoluted bits of wandering around wondering why you had to pick up junk. most of the puzzles are on the lowest end of skill to complete. but those that aren't, oi, what a pain in the tail feathers. luckily the hints (in the form of crosses for the main character & badges for the briefly played secondary character) are plentiful if you keep your eyes peeled. some of the puzzles are just annoying to the point of skipping them just to get a move on.
that's not even touching on the mechanics of the game being off... clicking repeatedly, Hoping to hit it in the "just right" sweet spot was definitely a tooth grinding experience.
the good points... ah well, there are some. not many but some.
the graphics are solid (if a little on the goth side) and the music doesn't make a person's ears bleed. the voice acting isn't bad.

but there are loads of other games with better Everything that are far more worth the price. so given that pretty much All the hours/time you see under my belt in playing this was spent grumbling about having to trek back Yet.Again. to some pointless spot to plug yet another piece of junk haphazardly into what i Hoped was the right spot... i can not recommend this game.

Beautiful game with terrible controls, awful puzzles, and a very underwhelming experience. There are many better ones on Steam.

I have seriously mixed feelings about this game. On the one hand, I'm a Linux gamer and enjoy hidden object games. I'm happy to see another publisher of these games supporting Linux. It ran without any problems on my older Linux Mint system.

On the other hand, I wish the non-English speaking publishers of these games would try to find people with a better grasp of English when they do their localization. Some of the hints appeared to have been translated with google translate, which means they were nigh useless. You also need great precision in your clicking as often the active zone on a hidden object is quite small.

The story was different from the usual horrible-monster-wants-to-take-over-the-world ones that I've seen with other publishers. That's nice. I don't think I could really tell you the story though, especially now how it ended. Did the primary POV character actually survive? I just don't know. Maybe you're supposed to be able to decide that for yourself.

The artwork was quite consistent throughout. It was all very...atmospheric (read, dark). I noticed the same in the other games from this publisher. As all of the games are dark in tone, I suppose that fits. But if you like colour, this is not the game (or developer) for you.

This hidden-objects game tell us an intresting story about Anna, girl, who inspected strange sights on her hands. Game has an elements of horror, so you'll be strenous during playing this game.

I recommend it, because this game is very interesting.

Not only do half of the items you're searching for require you to click just so (not even in hidden object segments, but puzzles and even picking things up) but some of the puzzles involve things like being able to distinguish between four slightly different shades of green while only letting you view one at a time.

Short version: 60%

There are some okay puzzles and a decent supernatural hidden object game here somewhere, buried under a snail-paced plot and the clunky controls.

Long version:

I love the premise of Crossroad mysteries: an amnesiac woman arrives at an eerie town in search of her past, but what she finds chills her bones. As it turns out, her mother had to commit some dreadful crimes to save her from a childhood illness.
On top of that, the eerie atmosphere helps a lot to immerse ourselves in the plot. There is only one issue with it: the pacing feels terrible. It is as if the game lacked a director to keep it in check.

This unnerving feeling accompanies the gameplay as well. The hidden object scenes are okayโ€”as few as there areโ€”and even the puzzles have some refreshing ideas, despite the last one taking forever and a half. There is something off thoughโ€ฆ as if the controls were not responsive sometimes. That can pose issues, especially in the point and click adventure segments.

Therefore, here we are. A game with decent ideas at the core, but failing to package them appropriately. Still, HOG lovers should be okay with it.

I've been playing a lot of Artifex Mundi games lately, but have been disappointed in their puzzles. Some of them make me feel like I'm a trained pigeon pecking the button to get seeds. There's no challenge. This game was a breath of fresh air. I beat my head against it at several points and even ended up looking up a couple solutions when I was absolutely stuck (not much of an in-game hint user). The graphics are beautiful, the music contributes to the atmosphere and isn't intrusive, and the story is pretty good. There were a couple spots where it was a bit of a pixel hunt, but I didn't find that to be widespread.

If you see it on sale or in a bundle, don't hesitate to pick it up if you love hidden object games. As for me, they impressed me enough that I'm off to check out the other things this developer has made.

Edit: Sadly, I found this to be the best of the four. Howlville was decent, but the two Ashley Clarks weren't that great.

Did not like this game at all. No save points, so if you mess up you could have to do a section over. The puzzles were terrible, and most were not intriguing enough to me so I didn't even want to sit and try to figure them out. The dialogue parts were awkward, and the ending was crap.

It's ok. There were a couple of annoying puzzles, but nothing to terrible.

Hairy Mary

A short dark HO with a bunch of mini games to flesh out the time. I played on normal setting and it took me under 5 hours....and I'm certainly not a speedster!
You have marks on your hands which cannot be explained medically, so you decided to go back to your childhood town to discover what happened in the past. Your memory is murky and you wondered how you ended up in an asylum.
The graphics are suitably spooky and menacing with complimentary music. You have to make a few choices along the way and I did die a few times.....which is unusual in a HOG.
The mini games were challenging, but game play was pretty linear with multiple hints to aid you. I loved the fact that you find a block of chocolate, eat it and it gives you more hints!! There is an excellent journal and a fast travel map to show what areas have something to do. A little bit of pixel hunting for some objects, but on the whole fairly easy for an experienced HO player like me. No collectables and very easy to get all achievements if you solve all the mini games.
There were a few religious overtones to the game, but quite lightly done....and mainly towards the end. I've played much heavier biblical themed games.
Just scrapes through as a recommendation. 6/10.

I really enjoyed the overall play of this game, especially the story line twists and turns. Game play and plot are fairly well integrated, and I did not find myself needing the hint button (with two exceptions). Directions for puzzles/mini-games were not always clear but most of the time it was obvious what was needed (with some annoying exceptions). Hidden Object scenes do not dominate the game; they are interactive mainly with some list finds. The game is fairly long so I got more than my money's worth.

This game started off very well. Some good puzzles and some good HO. As the game progressed the puzzles become nonesense and the rules just stopped making sense. Luckily this is a short game so didn't outstay it's welcome.

I really enjoyed this older game. Made in the time when HOG were not yet "cloned games/cooky cutters" and had original puzzels! Finished he game within 5 hours with all 100% achievement.
It's not an easy game. This is because the hotspots are only activated after certain action had taken place or an puzzel has been activated. And there are not always tooltips or sparkles to help you find all hotspots, or puzzels.
A helpfull maps helped me out whenever I did not know what to do next, Trying every inventory item on every hotspot also helps to proceed further into the game. The story and its ending is dark and grim. I liked the graphics and interesting (partially interactive) hidden object puzzels, without helpful highlighting of object when hoovering with the mouse as in the modern newer games. I especially loved the challinging minigames. The minigames are the best part of the game! Although the puzzel explanation were not always helpful. They were fun and challenging to solve.

This is a good HO game. Interesting mysterious (at first) story, some challenging mini-games and HO scenes, and unique mini-games. The sound and music fit the game very well.

I guess I can't complain given that the game only cost me less than ยฃ2 but I don't think I've ever used the skip button on so many mini games in all my years! So much reading to try to understand what the heck was going on, though I don't think I really got the point! Dark and gloomy setting did lend an atmosphere of impending doom but basically I trudged my way through this game, quickly realising I was only playing because I thought it might get better - it didn't! But there you go, sometimes you get a good one, sometimes you don't.
