You play David, an awfully small abstracted chosen hero tossed into a blissfully simple world overrun by giant culminations of evil physics-beasts. As David, you are given a slingshot-esque gift that you will have to use to conquer your colossus foes. Be there AND be square.

David is a perfect example of why I love Steam Sales. ~$1 for amazing little indie games that someone/people poured their heart and soul into!

David is another one of those amazing finds.

Despite looking fairly harmless, there is a surprising amount of skill required to beat some of the levels on hard. It also does a fantastic job of showing how much better you’re getting and subtly teaching you. At the start of the game, I thought there would be no way I could beat the ‘very’ stages in order to get to the end but after playing the stage where your orbs are stranded about, I managed to figure out how to aim them based off their orbit around the ‘firing zone’. From there the game only got more rewarding as I practiced time shots looking at both the target and the orbs.

The Atari/polygonal style, the atmosphere, the sound effects, the retro music the simple yet interpretable story!

I’ve only spent a little time with David but it was a blast, and there’s still an endless mode and few levels left to beat on Very!

Yet another game that makes me wish there were some middle ground when it comes to reviewing. I will recommend David., but it's a soft yes.

This game is challenging, but for the wrong reasons. The controls are the biggest problem. David's maneuverability is tricky and can be sluggish. In a game where every second counts, this often means a quick end to the run. On top of frustrating controls, enemy AI is very strong. The easy Okay Mode is fine and is a light, healthy challenge on its own, but the more difficult Very Mode throws you into levels with smart, aggressive enemies and only one hit on your health. I don't mind enemies that put up a good fight, but when you're so handicapped by poor controls and instant death, the game gets old fast.

Overall I do like the game and the concept, it looks nice, the levels are unique and creative, and the arena, separate from the story/progression, is by far the most enjoyable aspect. (The final boss is also pretty sweet, and satisfying to unlock.) If the controls were better I'd give this game a solid recommendation. As it is, if you're up for a challenge and don't mind the kind of game where there's no hand-holding and the runs are short because you're dying quickly and frequently, I'd say go ahead and grab this if you catch it on sale.

Foremost: David. is fun. You play a square with a rubber band gun of sorts, trying to best a series of boss rooms. That being said, David. has many problems and it's not the thin, but easily ignored storyline. Rather, it's the game's abitrary difficulty.

The game starts off very easy, most players should have no problem beating the first levels within their first couple of attempts. Even on "Very" difficulty, the game's hardest setting, which changes little but reduce the number of hits you can take to zero.

But the difficulty ramps up quickly, mainly due to the minimal overview the game gives you over each level and its challenge(s) at each level's start. The camera is centered on the main foe in the beginning, trying to give you an idea of what you're facing, but often doesn't show your character. Later levels require you to react quickly from the start to stand a chance. The way each level is introduced disorientates the player, forcing him to make his first move blindly to trigger the camera to snap back to him, all the while the challenge has already started. A good example is the "Anxt" level, where you have to quickly leave a small labyrinth to be able to get to the main boss and not be killed by ghost-like enemies on the way. They start chasing you before you even know you are in a labyrinth.

Worse is that victory or defeat often feel arbitrary. Enemies are either too dumb (e.g. the "Wolf" level, where you fight two enemies in a pit, but can easily sit at the top and stop their every attempt to reach you) or too intelligent (basically everything that shoots you). This is part of a another problem David. has, that is controls.

To shoot you need to click on your character. However, survival requires you to jump around so much and so quickly, that skill is not needed to aim at your enemy but to click on yourself. Especially situations with many enemies become frustrating and feel unfair quickly as surviving often is a matter of getting off a shot or not to clear the way. Aiming on enemies, luckily, is very easy as the game goes into a sort of slow motion when you charge your shot. However it feels like the slow motion slows you down more than it does those around you. For example, enemies bound to charge over your head can correct their trajectory much more quickly in slow motion. It's as if they're given time to think.

    • Enemies usually consist of many polygons that splatter away when you shoot them. Not rarely it happens that the surviving polygons splatter in your direction, hitting or killing you in the process. That takes away from the feeling of accomplishment.
    • There is no recovery or invulnerability time when you get hit. If you're rammed by an enemy you're likely to get pushed and hit several times. That is unforgiving.
    • Movement is like the gun: rubber-band-ish. It feels uncontrollable.

David. is fun. Mostly, because it's challenging. Unfortunately it is for the wrong reasons.

I hate to heavily criticize a harmless little indie game from a one man team, but I can't recommend this. For your $2 all you'll really get is bored and irritated.

The combat mechanics feel deceptively deep at first, but it very quickly gives way to level design that's either spiteful or just idiotic, in that only emphasises the weakness in the controls, throws coun tless unavoidable deaths at you and makes victories feel arbitrary. It also forces you to play each level without getting hit to unlock the terrible final boss, just to pad out the miniscule amount of shallow content. It's all topped off with an obnoxiously pretentious presentation driven home with #deep level titles and the hip meme-riddled achievement descriptions. Reads almost like a satire on indulgent indie games.

This game is okay. It won't break any orginality awards for art style, and the music is forgettable. There are a few things that disappointed me. You should never let the player be killed by things off-screen. That isn't "a difficult game" it's just bad design and lazy. The square handles like an amputee in wet cement, and isn't consistent. Having to click on the square itself to charge up the weapon seemed like a slap-dash way to make the game more difficult. I didn't enjoy playing the game, and it won't go down as a favourite for me. I feel I got my money's worth for eighty cents though.

Nicely made game, some great concepts for levels, and its hard too. What ruins the game is the unresponsiveness of the controls. Super meat boy is another hard game that is good beause it has responsive controls. David's unresponsive controls ruined the game for me.

Camera is obnoxious and is going to be your biggest cause of death. You can't see an enemy until he is pretty much 0.1 second away from you, so you have to resort to using slow-mo (part of the shooting mechanic) for the whole game (except final boss), which is tedious, especially when you have to click on your character to charge your shot and not just by pressing anywhere on the screen.

The movement response is also a big problem in the game. I don't mind that I have to break, and that it takes a while before turning from left to right, that's fine. But what really bugs me is the jump. There are no limits how many times you can jump after you are already airborne, but it just gives you a bit of velocity, which is quickly diminished by gravity, so you have to spam the jump button to climb up. It would be much better if the jump would work the same as the rest of the movement controls.

Level design is very basic and fits well the simplistic style of the game, but has a quickly thrown thogether feel. There are a lot of extra levels, almost as many as in the 'main' game and to my surprise these are designed much better, are more challenging and diverse.

Bosses are the only enemies in the game, and each of them is unique. However they can mostly be tricked and beaten easily, by just keeping them out of the screen and shooting at them, and they don't really resonate with their names.

Now the whole story fits well around the game concept and is mostly biblical. The whole game is constructed around david vs. goliath story, since david is small and has a simple weapon against their oversized and mighty enemies, hence the game name.
However levels/bosses are named after deadly sins and while some of them do act according to their representations, most of them don't. To me, names feel forced since there are no such references in the original david and goliath story. I guess we could say, that goliath is represented by the whole 'evil' of the universe you have to beat, but I don't know... Maybe I'm taking it too literal.

Overall even with the extra levels, the game falls short. Bad camera and controls increase the difficulty of already challenging game. At the end, it just feels like a game that works better on mobiles.

This game was a really wonderful experience for me because it was really challenging, but it never caused me to be frustrated or to quit playing it due to rage, instead, this game makes it feel very rewarding to complete any level on the hardest difficulty, which is required to beat the game, this made me feel like beating the levels in such a hard difficulty actually meant something and was not just for an achievement or just to give a bigger score; the controls are responsive, and each level feels different from the others, some of the latter levels are very nerve racking but never felt stressful or impossible. And to top it off, the game is extremely cheap and is not very long.

I thought that I would enjoy this game, but I just couldn't.

The lack of controller support was a definite con. I tried using the Steam Controller, but could not find an intuitive setup. (M/K is inconvenient for me as my PC is set up like a console).

This game tugged at my last remaining heartstring just a little bit. I can't help myself. Games that only have a single developer make me go, "Awww!" uncontrollably. I turn into a little Japanese school girl. And I hate it.

David. is a story about a little block named David who has the ability to charge a powerful blast of energy and slow time simultaneously. There's evil out there. It's bad. David has to end the bad stuff. And that's where you come in!

David is a 2D frenzy-arena where you are set against different enemies with different attack strategies and you have to learn when to dodge, when to shoot, and when to slow down the clock. Of course, the game is a bit broken in your favor, as you can slow down time whenever you want so you'll often find yourself slowing down the entire fight until you get into the right position to fire at your opponent. Whenever you don't, David and everything else in the arena will fly so fast that you'll hardly be able to click on David to slow time, let alone register what the hell is even happening.

Despite what flaws there are in the gameplay, it is unique enough to warrant a 1-hour long playthrough, which was what I got out of it. Go into David with the same expectations as other indie titles like Over the Void and Hook. Expect some unique gameplay showcased in a very short amount of time. And I do mean very short. I beat this game in a little over and hour. However, with online rankings and a few extra games (and even a cute little hat given to you at the end... for some reason) will give you some reason to come back and keep playing David, if that suits you.

Personally, I love David because it has so many things in it that make it a distinctly indie game. It's got the 8-bit music and graphics with a modern twist, references to King David and the different deadly sins found in the Bible (along with Wolf and Flee... for some reason), and the fact that this was made by one guy alone. I really appreciate someone who has the gonads to go out and make a whole game all by themselves, and for what it's worth... I'd say this is a well-made game for being made by one guy.

That being said, it's nowhere near perfect. Despite the broken time mechanic, the story is very dry. It's a simple introduction with a bunch of interspersed levels and a big boss battle with Sin itself. It presents everything very simply in that quirky manner that a lot of indie devs like to do, and even that "Thank you" page at the end warmed my black little atheist heart a little bit. He thanked Jesus. He thanked Jesus! I shook my head and smirked upon seeing that, seeing someone so adamantly devoted to their faith that they have to point out Jesus for helping them with making a game. It was adorable to the point, that it warranted an ironic chuckle out of me.

If David looks like fun to you, it probably will be. It's well-made, and makes for a good one-hour time waster. I'd say it was worth the money I put towards it, and if you like little quirky indie games, David is right up your alley. It may not have blown my mind like other indie titles, but it certainly charmed my spirit because of its authenticity alone. I'm giving David a 6/10.

Steam recommended this game to me because I liked Thomas Was Alone. The only similarity is that you play as a block. The "narrator" or whatever just says weird vaguely religious sounding stuff that is neither funny nor inspiring. The controls are genuiniely upsetting, movement is very squishy but fast so it's hard to control, and the mechanic for shooting is just dumb and frustrating. Why do I have to click on myself to start charging instead of anywhere on the screen? It's not like there's anything else to click on. Died on the first level 5 times in less than 30 seconds just because the controls are so jank and you have this enormous enemy that you can't even see until he's on top of you. Also seems like way more of a shooter than a platformer from what I can tell.

Uzal
Uzal

It a decent platformer, probably worth the price if you like that sort of game, and I am not a particular fan of platformers myself. David was alright - I ran through it and earned most of the achievements in a couple hours or so – it isn’t too difficult of a game, once you acclimate to the controls. However, I didn’t really enjoy it all that much myself, mostly on account of the very floaty controls and some inconsistency of response on the part of the mechanics. There were three principle issues I had:

A primary mechanic, which is that time slows down while you hold the mouse and are in shooting mode, really breaks up the pace of the game. It works – it’s necessary to beat many of the games levels – but it often results in just long periods (5-10s) of pressing and releasing the fire button while everything else crawls across screen. Maybe more skilled players won’t need to rely as much as I did, so this may not be a problem for everyone.

The movement controls are loose, which leads to a lot of button mashing, especially when attempting to jump/fly. Sometimes I could float indefinitely, sometimes I would stall out in midair, sometimes walls would left me gain speed and other times they wouldn’t. For the most part this wasn’t all that detrimental, but I had quite a few restarts due to the fact that the controls did not do what I was expecting them to do.

The shooting mechanic is marginally better, but there’s inconsistency there too. You have orbs which fly out a certain distance, then return to you. These often fly around the screen and fail to return expediently, sometimes swinging around or “rubber-banding” your character without actually them so you can fire again. Accuracy is a little loose. Sometimes, on their way out orbs pass right through enemies without destroying them; sometimes they’ll destroy enemies while on their way back to you, other times they’ll pass right through them then as well. The trouble is that it’s difficult to know what the outcome of your actions will be, which can be frustrating.

Everything was reliable enough to let met beat the game, so the game does not ask more of you than you can accomplish with the tools it provides. I personally just found it less enjoyable than it might have been with tighter controls.

Otherwise, graphics, sound, level design were about average, nothing to write home about. It has a token plot, though some of enemy/boss concepts are pretty interesting, in terms of metaphor. If you like platformers, it’s probably worth the asking price, but otherwise I’d give it a miss.

TLDR: Play 140 instead. The maneuvering feels underpar. Misguided arcade cat and mouse experience in which you evade your square from other geometric shapes.

I was expecting a minimalistic but audiovisually powerful and well designed platformer. Something similar to 140. This is not it. You can infini-jump into the air akwardly for no reason. Every level geometric shapes rush towards you to molest you. I could find no objective or anything to do other than try to outrun whatever is hostile. The windows mouse cursor stays hovering on top of the unity engine window. You cannot stick to walls or do any nice maneuvering. Just the clunky infinitjump. The controller often would not be able to navigate menus. Pressing ESC in a menu closes the game's process rather than go back a screen.

I am one of those determined gamers who has "gotten good" at some of the most skill-intensive titles, and I must say this game was a nice challenge. I like the abstract style and Biblical reference of overcoming our giants in life. The gameplay is simple, yet each battle is unique, reminiscent of Shadow of the Colossus. I was a little slow to adjust to the momentum after jumping and firing, but the controls are not at all complaint-worthy. This is a nice game, and I definitely recommend it to others who enjoy challenging gameplay and minimal aesthetics, such as with games like Flywrench.

About David.

David. is a simplistic game about a cube who can fly and shoot stuff. It is segmented into levels, each following their own rules. Your task is to complete the level - usualyl by defeating a "boss" - and getting to the exit.

The game offers two difficulties, called "Okay" and "Very". On "Okay", you are given a life bar, while on "Very" it's a one-hit KO.

Technical Implementation

One might think that such a tiny game (58 MB) would not have many technical difficulties, but controller implementation was a mistake. David. is a game that contains a surprizing amount of clicking, and trying to play this on a controller is not the easiest task in the world. After trying the first boss for more than 30 seconds, I found myself quickly switching to mouse and keyboard.

One other problem I had was that every level started with the camera focussing on the goal, rather than your character. As such, you usually spend a second or such moving blindly. I think that this would be okay the first time entering a level, but not on every reset (you will reset a lot if you play on "Very").

Other than that, the game runs fine and should run on any hardware.

Is it fun?

I've played this game for a solid hour and feel like I've got a pretty good grasp on it. Other than the final boss - I will get to that one in a moment - it was well implemented. After a few minutes of getting adjusted to the gameplay, it is fluid and fun. The level design varies and part of the fun is figuring out how you are supposed to beat each level. One level requires you to run to the exit as fast as you can to get your shooting power and kill what chased you, another level requires you to "bait" the enemy into coming out of "water" so you can attack it.

The final boss on the other hand was not very fun. Since the background gives you no frame of reference and you repeatedly slow and accelerate time, you quickly lose a feeling for where and how fast your character is going. Since you also have no way to zoom in or out, you will find yourself getting hit by objects that quickly approached off-screen, or you dash headfirst into something that kills you, because you had no idea where you were going. The last bossfight was thus the least fun part of the game for me, but nothing that a few small changes wouldn't be able to fix.

Is it worth your money?

Absolutely. It costs 1,59€ for me and I think I got my money's worth out of it.

Fun game! I love the time manipulation mechanics!!
It's a short game—you can easily finish the main quest in a few hours—but it's really enjoyable, figuring out the mechanics of your powers.
It would be interesting if our power developed with time, e.g. if you collected the neon bullets as you advanced, but it's great as-is.

This game is frustrating, it's stupidly unfair.. It can be considered impossible rather than hard or "very" as you see this in the game on every level. I don't recommend you paying for a game such as this one

Bad game with borked controls.

Incredibly cheap for what you get, the mechanics are rock solid and the game is a minimalist Shadow of the Colossus.
It's quite small but quite good.

I had never played any indie games (if you don't count Flash games during high school computer class) until 2015, which is when I purchased this. At the time, I only had a Macbook Air, so my choice of games was limited.

I couldn't believe how perfect this game was back then. I fell in love with the minimalism, from the graphics to the soundtrack to the overall simplicity of it. I loved that it was so frightening and I felt so insignificant, and it was creepy to have these unknowable creatures relentlessly pursue David's death (and continue pounding on the body after his murder). The stark palette was something I had never seen before in a game, and I'm all about the visuals.

Being that I had only really played console games (and a few CD-ROM PC games), being able to experience so tiny and artistic was profound. This was one of the best discoveries back then. Since then, I have found plenty of other games that feel like they were made just for people like me. I just replayed this and was still very impressed with it. Nowadays, it reminds me of that time in 2015 when my world completely changed. It wasn't as significant as the doors being blown wide open when I came out, but it was still significant nonetheless.

Nice hardcore game, but gamepad support is very bad :(

First big point: This is a Mouse and Keyboard platform shooter. No Joypads. If you hate this, stay far away as this is the apotheosis of horrendous click and run gaming. Holy Toledo.

Second: David is yet another cash-in for the "games about squares" genre. Visibly not play-tested as evidenced by its own scoreboard. If the "designer" has sold just a dozen copies, they have been fairly rewarded for their effort. I honestly can't tell if this is a cynical joke, or a beginner who threw together the first ten things they learned from a book on making video games and said, "good enough"

You know how you have to beat a Mario Maker level yourself before you can post it? (or at least you're supposed to?) I doubt such an effort was made here. This is some bad game play. ⛝

I could get this game gifted to me and still want my money back, I'd rather buy bad cats.

David. (Yes, dot included) is one of those harder games by design, although many of the frustration in the beginning is that the controls are not completely intuitive, and it will take some time to get used to them. You play as a square, armed with some balls that act like boomerangs. You click David to charge an attack, then move the mouse to where you want to fire the stuff, usually at a mesh of shapes enemy. 2 things make this tricky: the need to click on David during movement and after firing means lots of mouse movement and clicks need to be somewhat precise; and that only the balls inside David at a given time are shot, meaning you also need to time the attacks. You can get more used to it, but it’s particularly frustrating in the beginning.
Content-wise, it’s actually pretty good. It has 8 main levels, and they’re all unique. You have a “normal” mode with 6 lives, and a “hard” mode with just one. I used quotes because one live is the real level, and you need to beat them all that way to unlock the final boss level. Plus, there’s achievements and leaderboards only for beating the levels with one live, so think of “normal” mode as easy mode, because that’s what it is. The final boss is harder, but with the knowledge you acquired previously you’ll beat him eventually, even with only one live. There are also 5 bonus levels, once again all unique, and a hidden basketball minigame, just for a different, more relaxed experience.
But my favourite mode is the arena, where you fight an endless horde of enemies. However, there is a progression system. You start weak, but as you kill more and more enemies, you unlock upgrades that allows you to go further and further, and a buffed-up David is really satisfying. I spent a few hours in this mode, and you can think of it as the endgame content.
So, is it worth it? For the price, I would say yes, just be aware that it’s a harder game and especially frustrating at the beginning. But after you get used to the controls, it gets better, and the arena mode progression will keep you entertained long after you beat the main game.

A very good game that can be finished quickly with skill. Deep and interesting story delivered quickly. Challenging yet enjoyable. 10/10 definitely recommend.
