Best point and click adventure of all time. Where Simon the Sorcerer tries to be funny, this game is just hilarious.

Possibly the best point and click adventure game ever made? I played this back in the day when it was first released. This remastered version looks simply stunning, although I remembered most of the puzzles from the old game so didn't blow me away like the original.

A classic and one that everyone should play. Good humour and a fun time-spanning point and click adventure. Loved it!

amazing game, all in all it's high for people who love adventure games.
in my run i used 3 hints (1 i do not think i would find myself, 1 i was blind to see an item and the last is an error (IMO) on a vcr button the aquare button is stop and the circle button is record, c'mon ppl . Besides that the humor was solid, the puzzles were all logical (even the one i think i would not solve myself. The voice work is... ok, but it gets the job done.
pick it up on a sale it's a fun experience.

This is the remastered version of "Maniac Mansion 2", which itself is the sequel of "Maniac Mansion" from 1987, a game that is almost reaching its vintage age. For those who didn't know or too young to know, these are made by the same guys who later made the legendary "Monkey Island".

Maniac Mansion is included in this remastered version as well and you can find and play it on a PC inside the game so you won't miss out anything if you didn't played the 1st game before.

And since both Maniac Mansion 1 & 2 are present in this remaster, i might as well review them both.

Maniac Mansion

This game is one of the earliest genius design game from 1987 that introduced a real time exploring simulation that is very very rare back then...

To put it short for the newer gamer generation to understand, it is very similar to the not long ago viral "Hello Neighbor" game, merged with the good old school "Simon the Sorcerer" point and click layout in game UI wise...

It has multiple play-able characters, multiple endings and of course, choice matters that defines the route and branches in the game. It's a short game in overall with tons of solving methods so you can play the game over and over again with different combinations and ways to reach the ending, each filled with their own old school humor and each play through can be very different. So the replay-ability is very high and will probably take more time than the actual "Day of the Tentacle" itself if you went all out for a full completion testing out all possibilities...

Maniac Mansion 2: Day of the Tentacle Remastered

The remaster is true to the original, but with all the artwork remade in HD. The cartoon-ish humor and all that really bring out a lot of laughter and childhood memories. Puzzle is still fun after all these years, and gives a lot of the "oooh" moment when they finally make sense... It can still be considered a masterpiece even when compared with recent point and click games.

So, if you are a point and click adventure game lover, or if you played Monkey Island or Simon the Sorcerer before and loved them, you will surely love both Maniac Mansion in this remastered version.

I grew up playing the Pajama Sam series of point and click adventure games, but needed something a little more challenging as an adult. I will admit I had to use a guide a few times. Some of the puzzle steps don't quite make sense, and others rely on you picking the exact dialogue to make something happen. Finished the game in about 6 hrs. There is little replay-ability unless you forget about the game and play it once a year. A nice casual/comedic point-and-click finish-in-a-weekend game overall.

A highly humorous and slightly unhinged tale of simultaneous causality, interacting in cartoon logic's over 3 time periods, bringing new dimension's to the cause and effect of point and click video game! A master piece in the intellectual age of silly. Very funny Lucas Arts classic adventure game, remasterd sound and fx nicely by double fine, with added bonus of being able to hit f1 for the original pixels! oh and if you missed maniac mansion its actually complete in this game, on a computer within a computer...whaaaa??

A fun and colorful adventure game that is unfortunately still an adventure game. The world is fun, the characters all funny and engaging. most of the puzzles can make you feel like the cleverest person alive, while others even knowing the solution feel designed by an alien. It is truly one of the greatest in the Point and Click genre and deserves praise for what it is, but the genre has died out for a reason.

....It's ok. Better than Full Throttle's remaster for sure. MOST of everything is here, plays well, no clicks pops or breaks in any of the music so great on that. However, as someone who still has a working win95 machine I can tell you exactly the bits that are missing and don't work properly, THANKFULLY it isn't many.

The intro's and by extension, the time warp swirl do not play right on new aged systems. My guess is due to refresh rates on monitors but it barely looks like it swirls anymore, numerous sound effects and areas COMPLETELY missing reverb and echo, once again the time warp sequence is a BIG example of this... there is no spacey echo on ANY of the characters voices anymore, even Edna's laugh is supposed to have an un-nerving echo to it as she disappears down the screen.

The remastered soundtrack is extremely hit and miss, as well as the new remastered sounds (the tentacles sucker sound is ATROCIOUS compared to the original, there is nothing to it, barely sounds like they are moving atall), while the older music is using a modified MT-32 soundtrack, I know it's modified because I have 2 different MT-32 synths and they both have differing soundbanks compared to this release).

I guess this one is more worth the money for sure, but as usual no time has been spent remastering it's sound and getting THAT working properly, but it isn't enough to ruin the experience entirely.

A Lucasarts Point and click classic adventure. Got this game when it was released because I knew it was a sequel to maniac mansion. Bernard the nerd makes his return followed by new characters Hoagie a heavy metal roadie and Laverne a wacky medical student. The mansion and Crazy Dr. Ed and co. also are in the game of course. The three kids are stuck in different time periods and it’s up to you (and Dr. Ed) to help them stop an evil purple tentacle from taking over the world. Brings back a ton of memories of playing DOS games, definitely a classic.

really fun game:) worth it!
i did get stuck in some areas it usually had to do with dialog or over looking something. it pays to take breaks with this game and return later but over all the difficulty isn't to high. I completed the game in a little less than my play time then ran through again using an achievement guide to grab anything i missed. some are easily missed most come through just playing.

Day of Tentacle Remastered is obviously the remastered version of the famous adventure by LucasArts. I was lucky to be a gamer during the golden era of LucasArts and this game was one of the brilliant examples of how an adventure game should be constructed. The remastered version makes it accessible to a new generation of gamers without making any compromises.

Pros:
+ excellent humour (skillfully integrated in the whole game), dialogs and writing.
+ Excellent voices and music.
+ Puzzles and riddles are really clever and all make sense as long as you manage to understand the general spirit of the game. The ability to change characters in past, present and future is working flawlessly.
+ Cartoonish style of graphic and environment is very well executed.

Cons:
- Duration is a bit on the short side.
- As in all similar adventures you may get stuck in some puzzles trying endless combinations.
- More save slots could be welcomed (especially if you are achievement hunter).

All in all a masterpiece of adventure game. It is a pity that such games are not available any more. I may not have now the time to invest in getting stuck in a puzzle (and internet and steam guides can be very helpful in this respect) but I definitely appreciate the talent and effort behind this game. In a nostalgic note these games helped me even improve my English a couple of decades ago: I still remember searching in a dictionary what fake barf is.
Can we please have remastered versions of the Indiana Jones adventure games?

This is a classic! It requires a bit of patience for those who are use to the more modern, fast paced video games however, you will not be disappointed. Its silly, puzzling, and you will find yourself repeating the lines from the game among friends. If you are a young video game player you should really give this game a go as a way to step back in time and enjoy old school fun.

Do you have a young child in your life that you would like to introduce to classic computer gaming in the safest, most enjoyable way possible? If so, this is your game! I remembered it fondly as one of the funniest, goofiest computer games I had ever played, so when the remastered version popped up on sale for $4, I snapped it up. Played it over a Christmas visit with my 5-year-old granddaughter and it was a great bonding experience.

It was still funny, but I had forgotten just how tedious those old point-and-click adventure games really were. But when you have a child copilot, that's no problem - little kids LOVE repetition. She needed help with the dialog trees, but quickly mastered the clunky controls and memorized the layout of all 3 versions of that old house in Philadelphia. So I'd help her figure out the next step and then let her run back and forth and up and down the stairs, switching characters, and chucking random objects into the time travel toilet while I looked up the answer to the next ridiculous puzzle in a walkthrough. Yes, I played it before, but it was 15 or 20 years ago, okay? And I'm pretty sure even at the time it didn't spontaneously occur to me to paint the fruit on the kumquat tree red so George Washington would chop it down (oops, sorry. Spoiler).

The remarkable thing about this game is that the humor works on so many levels that it is equally funny to a preschooler and a grandma. For an adult the replay value is limited, but as a collaborative game with a small child there is no limit. When we next saw each other a year later, Little L (now 6) could hardly wait to play it again. This time she could read more of the text herself and remembered the solutions to a lot of the puzzles, but not all of them, which gave Grandma something to do. So playing it again was still a bonding experience and still fun for both of us. And a great introduction to the Founding Fathers, right?

I loved this game as a kid long ago. And playing it again all these years later didn't disappoint. Even my kids like playing it. My 8 yo daughter has already watched me play all the way through it and now she wants to play it through herself. They just don't make games like these anymore. You all can have your over-engineered Cyberpunk games that requires thousands of dollars in hardware yet full of glitches and problems. I'll take classics like these any day.

One of the greatest gems of the LucasArts point-and-click era (Sam & Max, the Monkey Island series), this DoubleFine remaster is painstakingly perfect.

The animation is literally redrawn (google a video to check out the incredible attention to detail) and the audio has been cleaned up; an interface "wheel" has been added (and it's great) - but if you don't like any of that stuff you can play with any of those options in the original format. As a bonus you even get Maniac Mansion for free!

Day of the Tentacle has lost none of its personality and charm in the decades since it was released and this remaster just helps cement it as a timeless classic.

I played this game in the 90's originally on floppy disk, then the CD version came out that ran on the millennium edition of Windows. Safe to say it was probably the first point and click game I ever played; and the first I completed from start to finish without a guide.

You'll probably see a lot of nostalgic reviews here on steam, and they absolutely have their place. But if we look at this game from the point of view of someone who didn't play it back in the 90's it still has a solid story, interesting mechanisms to solve and a great art style. Well worth a play whether you're coming back to it or if you're trying out for the first time.

A classic! If like me you played and loved the original back in the day, believe me, this remastered version is its worthy tribute. The graphics are top notch, the remastered music too, the gameplay is smoother (wheel of actions)... An excellent upgrade to a classic game without ruining it or changing it too much.
Now, if you have never played it, this remastered version is worth a try, it does not look like an old game at all! Just old school style. This is a traditional point and click, with many items to look at, many places to explore, an insane scenario with quirky characters and absurd dialogues, tons of items to gather and combine, loony music, super clever narration with time jumps, but most of all: a crunchy taste of humor that still holds up to nowadays standards. Do not expect a huge game, this is a little gem, and you have to accept the derisory tone and slow pace of typical 90s good old quirkiness. When on sale at a few bucks, this is a steal that any gamer should do, as it is a piece of gaming history!

This graphic adventure has probably the most interesting concept ever seen: the three characters interact in the same location but in three different ages and everything they do in the past can influence the future. This settings allows several absurd and funny solutions for the puzzles.
If we add cartoonish graphics, great voice acting, funny dialogues and the return of "Maniac Mansion"'s cast (the game itself is included as an easter egg), we have a definitive product!

Amazing remaster of one of the best puzzle adventure games of all time.

The gameplay is peak LucasArts, using the 9-verb interaction system with inventory visible on screen. You can swap between 3 characters in the past, present, and future, and share (most) inventory items between them. Actions taken in the past will cause changes to appear in the present and future. The puzzles are clever and the situations are hilarious.

The graphics are perfect. The original art style is completely preserved in the new high resolution widescreen graphics, unlike some other remasters that made questionable art decisions.

The music is good too. It sounds like very high quality MIDI, and works exactly like the classic iMUSE system in synchronizing with onscreen events. I do wonder if it might have sounded better with real orchestral recordings, but the MIDI-style playback is rather nostalgic.

One complaint: I had to add --DisableFMODDSP to the launch options to fix choppy sound and music. Apparently this has something to do with Realtek High Definition Audio, which is very common on motherboards.

Thadir

I remember playing this game back in the day. So here it is a newly remastered version let's see what it brings.

So when I finally sat down and played it .... it was okay. Like all point-n-click games of the time, it suffered the same "What next?" problem. These days if you get stuck you just go online and within minutes you have an answer (usually.) Back then, you usually had to wait for some gaming magazine to publish a walkthrough, and when you live in a small town your options in that regard are limited. However, this is what made point-n-click games so compelling. The challenge. DOTT in this regard was far too easy and I remember this was one of the few games I didn't need a walkthrough. So my criticism is that it was too easy.

Graphically the game was colourful and pretty, making it stand out from other games of the genre. The cartoony graphics were a bit refreshing, with a noticeable Chuck Jones feel to them. Voice acting was pretty good for the time.

So, what do I think of the remaster? Well, it gives me hope. This game has been so well remastered to current-gen systems that it gives me hope that more old LucasArts games get the same treatment *cough* Fate of Atlantis *cough*. Hint, hint, wink, wink.

Visually the HD remastered graphics are great and you can almost forget how old the source material is, however as another reviewer said, they can be a bit bland and lacking detail. However, this is just in contrast to current standards, back then it was detailed.

Story-wise, DOTTR is as funny as it was back then. A few dated jokes that the younger generation are unlikely to get, but otherwise it holds up.

Overall:
Day of the Tentacle remastered is a fantastic remastering of a cult classic for current-gen systems. However, if I had to be honest, this game is primarily aimed at its long time fans. Newer/younger gamers are likely to not get a lot of it and hold it on par with an interactive cartoon (whether that is a good thing or not may vary depending on personal taste.) The bottom line is this is a great game with which I had a lot of fun, both then and now.

Side Note:
Don't play this game with a walkthrough or trophy guide on your first playthrough. Get any missed trophies on subsequent playthroughs.

I was a teenager when the game was released. LOVED it and was probably of of my favorite of all times.
I guess when you're a certain age and with all the walkthroughs available a fingerclick away, you dont have the patience anymore for all the weird puzzles. I remember DOTT was easy. Almost 30 years later, i had no patience for this.
It is still a great game and a marvelous remake but i guess my fond memories were better than playing it today.
I recommend it and its an important game to teach all gamer generations but today i enjoy other adventure games more:

HINT you can play the original Maniac Mansion in Weird Ed's room after using the computer 5 times. For what it is it's a fun little distraction for a casual play which will probably require the use of a guide. I got 13hrs out of it playing the original within the game and the game itself.
