Game is ok.

DDs Guns are a joke. You target the E Sub perfectly, shoot and the shells fly not 100s of yds away but 1000s.

E Subs are far too hard to hit with Depth Charges.

The mechanics of this game need a complete re-work to make this game playable. A arcade mode making the game easier and more fun while having a realistic mode if you really want to spend 5hrs of your life sailing round in big silly circles.

The graphics are poor. Silent Hunter 3 was on par with this and SH4 was by far better.

Sadly the game to me is poor.

Thanks, Graeme1701 ( www.1701gaming.com )

Still in the early stages, but also absolutely fun and playable, this is a fantastic game I can't wait to see grow! If you're looking for a naval tactics game, this is one of the few that is easy (ish) to play and work, accurate/realistic enough that if you know history even a bit you won't hate it, and still incredibly fun. Devs, if you're reading this, Thanks for an awesome game, keep it up! (and though I know it's likely unrealistic right now and I'd understand if it would never happen, multiplayer would make for a dream game!)

The game is very immersive, the radio chatter back and forth really gets you into your role. The devs have also showed they do listen to player feedback and make adjustments accordingly. The main issue I had with the game at launch is that the maneuverability of the uboats didnt feel right, they moved too fast underwater and the turning circle also felt off. Thankfully the devs have just released a patch where they addressed this issue and fixed the Uboat maneuverability, along with some hiccups the game had here and there. Another issue was that all the Uboats were really agressive and cared little for approaching using stealth, thankfully this has also been fixed so now you have to stay on your toes or else a uboat may slip by and sink your convoy. The game is quite in depth so you will have to get used to switching between stations in order to track the uboat and calculate your attack approach accordingly but it feels very rewarding.

Minimi taistelu on tunnin mittainen.

Feels weird to be on the other side of the periscope after so many years in SH :D

By the way, the game has the potential to become the absolute rival to Subsims. It currently sports a very nice and customizable skirmish mode that can be very easy or very hard. The realism is close to extreme, but you can "tune it down" if needed.
The AI is somewhat challenging, but for now it doesn't pose a threat to escort, as it's main goal is to sneak around and torpedo merchants. It will, however, attack escorts as well once this feature is complete. I really hope the devs deliver new content soon. The procedurally generated campaign is probably what I'm waiting for the most.

PROS
- Great atmosphere
- Good voice lines and sound
- Realistic models and water wakes on the keel
- Convincing underwater explosion wakes
- Challenging AI that forces you to adapt and study new strategies
- Two types of attack: Various depth charge configurations and 30mm cannons. It would be nice if the Uboat had some air reconnaissance like Ju88s scouting the convoy before an ambush.
- The escorts are efficient but not infallible
- Virtually endless Skirmish mode that can be customized
- Play at any time of day and any weather, makes the game even better.
- No gamebreaking bugs and that's a lot for EA!

CONS
- Misplaced explosion effects in relation to impact and depth charge position (maybe a bug?)
- Sometimes the U-boat AI gets stuck in a loop and keeps circling on itself
- No campaign (will be added in the future)
- The event cam showing the Uboat underwater makes the game very arcadey, hopefully they add a feature to remove it.

And when in doubt... FIRE AS THEY BEAR!

I like it a lot. It does require a lot of thinking. Seems like a game with a goal of preserving some World War 2 history. The only problem i ran into is part of the tutorial gets stuck. When you are supposed to fire depth charges, the fire button doesn't work. Edit: Just requires some waiting. Something i missed in the tutorial. This game makes you feel like you are in charge of a fleet and fighting real u-boats. Very immersive.

EDIT: I finally got this game to work- I had to dial back the performance of my CPU. Strange, because it wasn't running particularly hot or near its utilization limit- but whatever!

I've only played it for a couple of hours, but I really like it so far. I'm definitely into detail-oriented study-sims (hi-fidelity F/A-18 in DCS World is one of my favorites) and this title so far is sufficiently rich to have my interest. I watched most all of the Youtube videos on gameplay, and they made it look easy. It's not! Granted, I've only been playing for a few hours, but it really surprised me how easily I got disoriented and totally lost my situational awareness, even with the "auto modes" turned on.

Another thing I like about it is the mission goal: protect the convoy. It's not an arcade-y sink every sub to win the prize type thing. It's even mentioned explicitly that you may not sink every sub- but if you can harass them and keep them away from the convoy- that's mission success. EDIT: Actually, it's not. I just played a mission where I harassed the crap out of a sub, the clock ran out, and I was awarded a "major defeat" even though there were no convoy losses and I definitely wounded the boat. Bummer. At the moment, it doesn't matter as there's no campaign mode yet, but when that comes I'd hope that protecting my convoy would count as success, and sinking boats would add commendations.

One thing that others have mentioned in their reviews is that it's very "chatty"- reports are coming in from your sailors and other escorts at a machine-gun rate. Perhaps I'm just not yet familiar with the procedures, but it is a bit overwhelming at this point. There have been requests to add options for limiting verbosity- we'll see how Iron Wolf responds.
EDIT: Another thing I'd like to see is a better post-mission review. You don't know how much damage you dealt to a sub during the battle, other than obvious things like oil slicks. I think that's good- with WW2 tech, I wouldn't expect reports of "damage to enemy at xx%". I'd even go so far as to give an option to turn off the "target camera" when dropping DC. But I just played a mission where I was dropping right on top of the boat, and he breezed right through. I'd love to see in a TACVIEW-type analysis our relative tracks, DC strikes, etc. Still-

I'm definitely looking forward to spending more time with this title.

Definitely recommend.

Original "review" follows:

TLDR: I think this will be awesome, if I can get past the trailer....

I wrote a review which for whatever reason didn't post, and I lost the content.
A quick recap- I eagerly awaited this release, as i'm definitely into more school-sim titles than action/arcade. The demos look awesome.

Unfortunately, despite having a system that exceeds the recommended specs, it keeps freezing during the opening trailer- I can't even get to the main menu. I've tried clean boot, monitoring temps just in case, etc.

I can't give a thumb-s up until I get this cleared up. I hope I do, because it looks like an incredible title. I'll post updates as I learn more.

Absolutely amazing naval surface WW2 Simulation! It is very authentic.

As I am a huge fan of military maritime games, this truly checks all the boxes for me and I only have an hour in early access. I truly am very eager to see more development with a campaign and more immersive missions! (that they already have planned).

As someone who comes from the silent hunter games and mostly submarine games, to finally have surface ships in this level of detail is truly astonishing! If you are on the fence give it a go! I highly recommend to people who are lovers of simulations and world war two!

Rewriting review. This game can be great, but it's early access. Really not a lot too it right now. However overtime I'm sure it'll get better the campaign and possibly more game modes or other things. It's not awful, but it's underdeveloped. I'll probably buy it again when more has been added.

If you watched the film Greyhound and wanted a PC game that was exactly that, well here you are because this game has all the action and atmosphere you saw and felt watching that movie. Had this on my wishlist for 2 years and it hasn't disappointed upon it's release. What really sets it apart from almost every other Naval sims is you get the feeling you are actually there on the bridge or running out with binoculars in hand scanning the waves to check what the lookouts are reporting. Rather than feeling like the lone crew member aboard you have the crew modelled and giving regular reports from their relevant stations. All voice acted with different people in a believable manner. There are also brief cutscenes as you observe reports of initial sightings and your crew move to action stations - it's great and really builds the tension and atmosphere. Then you have the Escorts radioing their sightings as they patrol around the convoy of ships you are escorting. You also have Air support for the limited time they are within range then it's down to you and your fellow escort vessels Fletcher Destroyers and River Class Frigates. You can order the ships under your command to hunt down sightings and launch depth charge attacks or perform the attacks yourself or in combination. Currently there are three scenarios and an editor to specify the variables, with more to come in the form of a campaign. Even as it stands currently, there's more than enough action and gameplay to be going on with and master, so you wouldn't be disappointed in that regard. I hope when the campaign does arrive you get enough downtime / quiet moments to drink in the atmosphere and just savior the environment, because it's that good all you'd need is a spray bottle with some salt water in and jobs sorted. The Graphics external and internal are good enough that nothing stands out to take you away from the moment and break the illusion. Soundwise could maybe be improved with regard to sounds of the sea and weather conditions for me personally. All the stations you require are easy to use and soon become quite natural in swoping around as required, leaving you to do the most import part and hunt down the attacking Wolfpacks. The game runs faultless so far with no adjustment needed ( i9, rtx2080ti, 32gb) no stuttering, frame drops or glitching to report.
After playing numerous Sims from the perspective of the Uboats and cursing the Destroyer Escorts as I'm attempting to creep away after being detected or post attack, it's interesting to experience it from the otherside. If the game continues to add features as per it's roadmap it's set to become a modern classic. Just got to hope it stays faithful to the Devs vision and doesn't become victim to Early AccessItus and veer off into demands of 'communities' wanting to add / change things to the point you see screenshots of purple ships with pet cats sat all over the place.

Absolutely Recommended - Really playable as is currently - not too bogged down in keybindings to take you away from what's important ( can be played purely with mouse ). Excellent.

I have been waiting for a destroyer game for a long time, I have played most sub games due to my love of the genre, but have always been saddened by the lack of a counter part, the ability to take the fight back from the other side. This is that chance. I dont know how the future campaign will work out. But even in skirmish mode it is a fun game with plenty of potential for growth. For this alone I am thankful to the dev's for doing something that many have ignored as being too niche, even in the sim community. So thank you and I hope you continue to improve on this game thorough the campaign and beyond.

As for recommending this as a purchase, I will say yes, to anyone who is a fan of this genre like myself, and who wants to support the development. Even at this early stage there is enough to enjoy in skirmish, and its only going to get better with more content down the line. To anyone wanting a full game with campaign, don't buy it before its finished. But if your even looking at this game, then chances are you are a long time sim fan, and this is something Im sure you will like.

This game is truthfully the game I've been waiting for a very long time, authentic WW2 ASW.

Being authentic, yes it's hard, yes it's slow, but that's the point. It makes it that much more rewarding when you hear the callout of an oil slick and watch debris pop to the surface. The tutorial is phenomenal and explains everything you need to know. There are plotting simplifications that let you focus on planning your attack.

Again, this is a great game but it requires thought and patience.

The only problem I could see is that subs from WW2 did not move that fast underwater and while they did have a tighter turning circle at high speed, while underwater, not so much. Found it strange that subs were turning in excess of 20+ degrees while my ship lagged behind at sonar speed.

Also, please provide some kind of literature on the meanings of things like, "hard cut, left wake?"

This game is extremely hard and im yet to destroy a submarine.

Submarine is too fast and manuvers way too quickly!

I am still yet to sink a sub but I have managed to depth charge one but only just AND IT NEVER SUNK!!!

There needs to be an easier setting to start with as the easy setting is way too hard!!!

There is no manual. Only a tutorial which is sort of helpful.

nice game, i wanted one like that for a long time.
pretty hard to play at the beginning, could be easier if the tuto had different parts separated in the manu to try and understand each moment of the attack but still nice to play

The Good:
It's entertaining, and shows a lot of promise. I'm a big fan of sub sims, and have played these games for decades. It's an early access and seems pretty stable so far. Hunting subs offers some unique game play and is fun.

The Bad:
It's not very realistic and the game play at this stage is basic. Either shoot surfaced U-boats with your deck guns (which are wildly inaccurate, and don't seem to do much damage when they hit) or blow them up with depth charges. It feels like my destroyer closes in the last 200 yards in a matter of seconds. U-boats travel under water at something like 20knts.

I'm not sure what level of realism they are going for, but it isn't very realistic.
There are no hydrophones, only sonar and radar. U-boats will surface a few thousand yards from your destroyer for reasons I do not understand. The velocity of ships is also way too fast.

The Verdict:
Overall it's alright. If you like U-boat or the silent hunter series you might enjoy this game. If you want a hardcore destroyer sim, you'll be frustrated at unrealistic sonar and ship speeds.

If you are more of a causal gamer I'd find it hard to enjoy.

vmz23
vmz23

It's a really cool concept, but the game is too underdeveloped, even for early access. The nail in the coffin for me was how quickly the uboat moves.

The most egregious example was when I was doing 25kts with the rudder hard over to port and the uboat was able to run circles around me 600yds out. I did some rough math and I came up with a minimum speed of 66kts for the uboat to perform such an action, which it did while submerged. Until something as immersion breaking as that is fixed, it's a no-go for me.

I'm also worried about the future of the game because there are multiple games in simultaneous development by the same studio.

NERD STUFF
950yds (I Googled Fletcher DD tactical diameter, I did not measure in game) = 2984yd circumference
2984yds / 25kts = 212 seconds

950yds diameter + 600yd range to contact = 2150yd uboat diameter
2150yd diameter = 6754yd circumference

6754yds / 212s = 56kts to just keep pace
6754yds / 180s because it was getting away from me = 66kts WHILE SUBMERGED

I decided holding off from a review until I could get my first U-Boat kill and after 6 hours of trial and error I manage to finally sink one. It was definitely more difficult than I thought it would be to score a kill even while having all of the automation settings on. I can easily recommend this game to those who really have a passion in taking the time to learn the mechanics and systems the game has to offer and getting rewarded with time spent developing skills and tactics. But I do have some feed back that I think needs to be addressed immediately to improve the user experience of this game.

1. I think the U-Boats turn way to fast under water making it basically impossible to use the narrow pattern to any real effect. I never use the narrow pattern because of how difficult it is to time while the U-Boat is making a sharp turn so if you ever do decide to get this game don't use the narrow pattern unless for some reason the U-Boat is going in a straight line which is almost never the case.

2. The depth charges in this game are way under powered, I one time had me and my other destroyer escort dropped many depth charges near a U-Boat to get oil sliks and debris and still manage not to sink it. You'd think that if there are chunks of a U-Boat coming off and is leaking oil that it would just immediately sink.

3. I feel like a pausing mechanic is in need for this game. I know this game strives to be realistic and nitty gritty but for casual players who are wanting to get into this game it's gonna be very difficult to adjust to all of the things they need to be doing all at once. Even with automation I even struggled sometimes to comprehend what is even going on switching back and forth between sonar and combat tabs while trying to also not over turn or over speed my target. It should be a feature for those who want to get into this game but take their time and develop their skills and after they feel more comfortable disable the pausing mechanic.

All in all I think this game is very promising, depending how fast they can push updates for this game I don't see why this game can't succeed. Now that doesn't mean they need to rush updates out but as of right now there is only one thing you can do and for a game to strive there needs to be a reason for players to keep playing. After I sank my first U-Boat I basically called it quits because I've completed my goal for the game of course I'll continue to keep playing this game but I'm not sure for how long.

The EA version is not very different from the demo, save for a number of improvements in systems and mechanics, including a skirmish mode where you can create your own custom encounters or use one of the presets, i.e. small, medium, or large battle.

The game needs content, obviously, since it is still EA but still, it is a lot of fun. Folks coming from the Silent Hunter series and old enough to remember UBI's Destroyer Command (which I enjoyed a lot) will love it.

Various stations that you can use are quite plausible (dunno if the modelling is accurate, but it is believable) and immersive. It gives a great sense of achievement when you finally nail the sunovabich with a precision depth charge run.

I strongly recommend this game to anyone who enjoyed the Silent Hunter series, and naval enthusiats in general.

Heh heh, just won a 1 hour match. I didn't sink the sub, but he didn't sink anything either, so I won.... yeaaa!!! :))

I have to say it's quite a learning curve, but insanely exciting and I was really surprised that the game ended suddenly, and then saw that the hour had already passed... I felt like I had just started :)). Discovering I had made a good cup of coffee and had completely forgotten about this....ugh, hate cold coffee... "bad game, bad game" ;))

A very very long time since a game/simulator has made me lose track of time. Waiting with BIG longing for the full game... super well done, huge kudos to you dear developers - Thumbs up.

I would recommend that you watch these youtube videos first before you start playing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-p9ZJVIBnE&ab_channel=IRONWOLFSTUDIO

I would also recommend that you start with auto functions on before you possibly want to play manually. This helped me a lot after I started manually myself and got really frustrated. Drive on auto until you feel you've got the hang of it and know what's going on...

I want to give this game/simulator my warmest recommendation, a huge 11 out of 10 from me. Can't give anything else as I completely lost track of time.

UPDATE:

Having now played over 20 hours, I just have to make a small warning. I've now experienced quite a few bugs along the way, BUT hey, it's an early access game, AND I DEFINITELY still think it's okay playable and insanely exciting, and time still flies by without me noticing :))

Remember it's early access and I still highly recommend it.

going straight to the point, the game of course, need work and content but the idea is great.

I really like the main idea, the way you can give orders to others DDs, the air support, battle stations which you really need to spend time to learn to use... the game is funny which, in my opinion, is the main goal for every game.

I highly recommend the tutorial, videos etc... and use to custom battle to practice. Just you and other sub, very small engagement to practice. My plan at least is to do this as much as neccesary and then jump to the big ones.

IDEAS
- The walk around the ship, or at least the bridge, but please, let me take a look around and feel that im actually in the jump. Many of us come from SH5 and that would be a lovely addition.

- Maybe for the campaing, please dont give me the first contact that fast. In the custom you already start with the enemy sub detected at 5k yrds. Who says that sailing with the DD is not funny? Let me start, get use to the ship, organize the other scorts strategy etc.. let me enjoy "driving" the DD and let me find the uboot by myself :) (Maybe that could be an option we could enable-disable?)

- Maybe is to much to ask but, for the campaing, an in-port menu? where we could see our ship, improve systems spending any kind of renown points? maybe let me customize it with U-boot sinked decals? Let me feel that the ship is mine, care of it and make it "my home".

- Related with the last point, please let me choose between more names. Bloodhound is nice, but I would like to have other options, related with the last point, to feel it mine. (I know is not mine, is an USN ship but you understand me)

Thanks for the game guys!

Absolutely pains me to not recommend this game. I've been waiting for it since the announcement and had high, high hopes. At it's current stage there are just too many bugs. The most annoying and game breaking two are the submarine's speed while submerged and the turrets getting stuck facing a direction even when you have radar contact. In the tutorial it is stated that subs behind the convoy cannot catch up to the convoy unless they surface, this is not the case and they will catch the convoy submerged. When they are on the surface it is possible for your turrets to get stuck facing a direction and even with confirmed radar contact, and instructing the gunners to target that radar contact, the turrets simply won't move. Sometimes you cannot change the type of ammo either leaving you stuck on either star shells or regular shells.

gunslinger_lucky tankijunky
gunslinger_luc…

Combat board keeps auto selecting targets, unable to consitently track a single selected target do due too much none needed info on none selected targets. (i cant hear myself think let alone track the uboat im looking at)

I-AB[BB Co.D]Cpl.BaronVonPickles
I-AB[BB Co.D]C…

I spent my first match depth charging the piss out of a sub that wouldn't die no matter how many direct hits I got and ended up shooting him with the surface guns. Furthermore, submarines can go a bit too fast while being submerged and it some cases, can easily run circles around your destroyer. There are a few other bugs/ details but that was the worst parts.
Aside from that, as long as this game keeps getting updates, I have faith that it will be a great naval game. I've seen comments saying it's unplayable etc etc. but personally, for an early access title, I think it's decent and could do way better in the future.

sp33dr

Destroyer: The U-Boat Hunter takes a step in a different direction in the way that you are the captain of a destroyer in a naval sim instead of a submarine like in SH. It is a pretty interesting concept especially with the realism of the near-constant flow of information to the captain, radar and sonar instruments, tracking your location and the location of other vessels, etc. There is a lot of tension when you approach the U-Boat because you don't know exactly where it is facing, if it'll turn at the last moment, or if you'll score some good hits.

I've only sunk a couple of U-Boats so far, as it takes a lot of precision to sink them but it is very rewarding when you do sink them!

Now as I review this, this is an early access game. There's ought to be glitches that need to be fixed and mechanics that need to be improved. This was to be expected, but even with this I am still impressed.

The only real downsides to the game so far, aside from the fact that it's not complete and doesn't have more content, is that there are some glitches and the U-Boat maneuvering is kinda op. For example, A U-Boat got past me and sunk a ship, it surfaced so I fired the guns at it and I scored 2 hits on it. There was a big explosion and then the game ended, saying that we lost the one ship but I had sunk 8 U-Boats!! This was in the small game btw, and that was the only one. Those subs can easily do circles around me, their turning and speed underwater is pretty fast.

Overall, it's a good game that I recommend to anyone who enjoys historical accuracy mixed with good gameplay. And for those who have doubts about the game or don't like it: it'll likely only get better from here.

OMG! OMG! OMG!! SOOoooooo gooooood this game!!! Woohoo!!! Even this Early Access game is AWESOME!!!!! I LOVE it! Of course they are bugs, that's why it's called early access RIGHT???! But considering at this early stage I was playing just fine for more than 1 hour. I am HOOKED man!! I played all the Silent Hunter versions, Cold Waters but this is just up the ante man!!! Sorry I'm so excited about this game I wanna play it now even at work hahah!! It is so addictive. I worked on ships before as Navigator and I totally UNDERSTAND everything about what this game brings. The Stations on the sub are nice and works well. Can't believe it I'm controlling everything but you just get the hang of it to which station you need to maintain control. I love the SONAR and COMBAT sections cos that's where it happens.

I think the load will be too much for a casual gamer who knows nothing about navigation on ships especially when it comes to BEARING call outs. One could get confused.
Yep after playing the DEMO and transitioning to this, I'm totally HOME. But just BETTER!!

I'm just enjoying it, but I need to learn the sub-hunting tactics though. But it's ok! THANK YOU Team DAEDALIC ENTERTAINMENT!! Great concept bringing sub hunting onto the platform and I'm SURE improvements are coming our way even for me now, the game is super fun! I'm super excited to see what the Campaign section will be when it's ready. Hopefully we'll see a Create Custom Mission perhaps?? Woohoo!!!

I really want to like this game and if the devs keep up on updating this and not give up on the game, it could be one hell of a sim game. The problem I have right now that i see is the subs are moving way faster than what its registering in the contacts submerged. And another thing I hope they fix is the subs tend make circles around my destroyer when i'm close to the sub and then the sub is supposedly 500 yards away from me now and have to chase it again. I'm sure they can flesh this out down the road.

While very fun to play slightly complicated but it is none the less worth the buy! Cannot wait for the full release.
A couple of bugs in the game but that's expected with early release.
Overall I highly recommend the game.

Things I hope to see during full release:
Different destroyer classes
Secondary armaments (Dual bofors and M2's. )

Well what can i say this game could be so much more then what it is. Graphics are cartoon the video that pops up shows the wrong attack. The ships wont responed to a input. Your chance of sinking a sub is rare which is pretty cool. But your left thinking I just paid 25 pounds for this. One ship locked to I feel like as a early release this is a £10 game. I would like to see if the dev team actually finish the game but i dont think that will happen. Happy for the dev team to message me on twitch and would love to know your future plans with the game. It is sad but as other comment say, this game still need some rework.

U-boat can do a 90 degree maneuvers with ridiculously sharp angle. when I look the track record, me as a DD my turn is a round, U-boat I am hunting is a square, It turn right below me and looks like it's heading change 90 degree immediately after it start the turn.

And they are fast!! in tutorial movie they say the U-boat isn't fast enough to catch up convoy under water, they are wrong. I've seen a U-boat spawn 3km behind convoy, according to the tutorial, I consider it not a threat. After 10min, it start attack convoy from our broadside.

Also, your radar guided main gun never hit a surface U-boat. you better grab your own gun because it shoot better than 5 inch gun.

And they are hard to kill, you will need a direct hit to kill them, or maybe a few direct hit.

Command other escort to hunt the U-boat is the only way to deal problem, they almost never miss. Deal it by yourself is a dumb choice.

My Führer..... as a silent hunter player, I want a U-boat like that!!

This is not U-boat, this is UFO.

This game is meant to be difficult, and it is. That makes it very rewarding.
I can't really think of another game that feels like this: there's so much going on at once and you're so busy that you really feel like you're immersed.

Very cool, can't wait to see what the devs continue to improve upon!

A Strong lead up to an often-overlooked side of the War in the Atlantic:

Destroyer: The Uboat Hunter is starting pretty strong for a pretty ambitious game. Playing the Guide ship in a convoy provides a fairly unique side of Subsim combat. You have 1 ship under your direct control, much like in a more traditional subsim, but instead of sneaking up and ambushing ships, you are effectively always known to the enemy. Instead, you are guessing where they will be and trying to anticipate from where the threat will come, prioritizing those enemies that pose the greatest threat to your convoy while distracting the others.

Currently, the game plays like an early Beta, because it IS an early Beta. There are bugs and somewhat weak AI. Sometimes your air support flies off screen for some reason in a direction well past where the target is. Instructing an allied ship to attack a vessel within its Sonar Cone is basically impossible, as the game wants to default to changing the Sonar Cone.

All of these things are planned to be addressed on the Roadmap; the AI is going to get stronger, the UI is going to become more user friendly, and bugs are going to get squashed. A campaign is also coming.

However, and I don't know for certain if the following features are planned, but the three things I would most like to see for Destroyer are:

    • Rework the Scoring System: The Convoy is the most important aspect. It's bad if an Escort is lost, it's terrible if the merchants are lost, or losing cargo from being damaged. Ultimately, the tonnage you sink is less important than the tonnage you preserve, because there are enough U-boats out there to replenish losses, but that merchant could be carrying incredibly vital food supplies destined for a section of the front which isn't likely to have another window for resupply soon, and if that food doesn't get there, those soldiers have to fall back. Destroyer already has mechanics to support this, such as forcing U-boats to break off under immense stress, and appears to be planning more ways to stress-out enemy submarines, such as surrender or disengagement.
    • Cooperative play: This game feels like it would be immensely fun to play in Coop, with the Host taking the Lead Ship and other players taking the other escorts. Not only does this help offset the AI, it allows a neat aspect of social play in coordinating your efforts against the enemy.
    • UI redesign to include Convoy bearing and speed, so that it is easier to get back on course after dealing with an enemy vessel

Additionally, other fun additions to consider include more ASW weapon types, such as the Squid or Hedgehog mortars developed for engaging submarines, at the cost of Main Battery turrets, E-boat or Auxiliary Cruiser attacks, and hostile aircraft, either fighters who will try to chase your Maritime Patrol aircraft, or bombers and attackers who will try to engage your escorts or the convoy, both to cause damage and to distract you from u-boat movements. This could take advantage of enhanced terrain and map design to create interesting campaign missions, where your convoy strays too close to an enemy task force part-way through and you have to fight off their attack boats led by an enemy destroyer, then catch back up with the Convoy.

So far so good. The game is still in early access so its fairly limited compared to what full release should look like. Its right on par with their U-Boat game only for destroyers. I'm looking forward to seeing what progress they make with it.

Have to agree with others complaining about fast U Boats. Unrealistic speed and turning arcs while targets are submerged make the game frustrating. Great concept for a game, but not realistic by any stretch.

I requested refund for this game. Reality, the sub speed away, change course 3-5 times quicker then the Fletcher Destroyer can, while it's under water. Yeah, and even torp out in close range the ship I suppose to protect without any poroblem in 100 yard to activate the torp.
Visualisation is poor. You can't properly control your ship to catch up with the enemy. You need to give orders to fellow ships where to sonar/radar sometimes as in the Tutorial.
No collision warning just collided, so the game ended... Videos are great, but if I need something like that I would watch a movie rather a game.
When you are in the Bridge no engine sound at all. It doesn't matter if you on full speed or 1/3rd. I was able to see the sub until 900 yards, then went under and my sonar with in 3 seconds couldn't get a ping because like a torpedo it's went through underneath.
Only the Tutorial is playable, but any Battle it's not.

The game is really good so far and has heaps of potential. But being an early access there is some bugs and Q.O.L. things that I would love to see.
- Right now there is a bug that the noise from the TRR will continue to play if you were right atop a U-Boat but the battle timer runs out, or if any of the mission failure parameters i.e. rammed a friendly/being rammed by a friendly, it will continue playing into the main menu and into the next game.
- The U-Boat being attacked window that comes up on the top right has a graphical issue in which after the first time for me, it no longer showed an ocean so it was divided between sky and navy blue. the ships although I knew they were on the water surface looked as if they were flying (and their propellers weren't turning neither) through the sky dropping bombs on U-Boats hiding in the night sky. Restarting the game didn't fix the issue nor did verifying the integrity of the game files.
- I would love for there to be an order to other escort vessels which returns them back to their convoy positions if all known contacts are destroyed or gone undetected for awhile.
- Lastly AI pathing. about 5 times now I have been rammed by a friendly escort ship hunting down a U-Boat. The games tutorial openly encourages you to work alongside your AI partner(s) in hunting the sucker down because the more you have on a contact, the easier it is to pinpoint its location. But because of the AI pathing the way it is currently which is "a dog with a bone" They will not take avoiding action. They do not register the fact your there and will turn into you as they come about for their next run on the U-Boat.
I for one think this is my biggest bug bear. There is so much going on and when you know you have the U-Boat locked down and coming in for the attack to finish it having to break off for avoiding action is quite frustrating. It is also frustrating when your lookouts who are meant to warn you of said collision tell you 2 secs before it is about to happen because of all the other chatter going on coming from the sonar updates and the voice of the captain telling the helm what new course heading to take lowers the priority of "ah skipper we are about to be rammed by a friendly" to the bottom of the list so when it does come through (again the games tutorial says your lookouts, sonar, radar are your eyes and ears so listen to what they are saying) its too little too late to react. So those are my bug bears in the game currently.
However, the graphics are good, the sounds are pretty awesome too, probably needs a little bit of polishing up in some instances, some of the voice acting comes a little stilted when comes into the voice lines but overall pretty good.

Great game and I recommend it, if you want action above the surface compared to below. I warn you it is not the easiest thing to pick up, I am quite lost, but it is very fun. Many people are giving it thumbs down reviews b/c the subs are too fast, but this is early access. Speed and balancing are easily fixed. This game deserves good reviews and the devs will hopefully keep fixing it. To do so it has to be worth their time. Do you want tense destroyer action hunting Uboats in a dynamic environment? If so, this is for you. I recommend picking this up.

The game is very sofisticated. I lack the proper equipment (memory, graphic card), but it runs anyhow - with some glitches. It is difficult enough to make it quite interesting.

I don't care if the Fletcher class was never deployed in the Atlantic as a merchant escort -it wasn't.
I don't care whether the VIIC could sustain 8 kts submerged -it couldn't.

I am a huge fan of sub simulators and when I saw this i knew I had to try it. This game is complex but makes it very easy. I very much enjoy this and was very surprised in how much fun I had. It would be fun to have multiplayer at some point. All in all, I cannot say enough good things about this game-this is a must try!

Kishiryuu

The game is fun. I love SUB sims and when I saw this game I knew I had to try it. It has some ups and downs. For example when I play with a SUB sim I'm glad when the enemy can't spot me and when I'm being spoted I'm glad if I can run away without any scratch. I don't have time to torp some merchants between two depth charge runs but for me the AI easily sunk half of my convoy when two escort try to get her ass. Most of the time even when I score some hits and I saw in the action cam that the depth charge is detonating on the sub she don't care it and sail away. The tactical map sometimes lost in the heat of the battle and displays fals data. The sonar is a trickie one. If you learn how to identify the enemy bearing positions then you can always get the pinpoint sonar readings. Otherwise even if I stop the ship and search with the sweeping mode it's not sure I get the reading. Twice in my runs the enemy sub just went under me and my sweeping sonar couldn't catch her signal. I mean the enemy was about 2000 yds in front of me and I went 1/3 of the speed with 90 degree sweeping sonar when I couldn't pick-up the sub's signal it became sus and suddenly my ally gave me the reports of the enemy exactly behind me about 1000 yds. Sometimes you can easily sunk a sub but sometimes even when you hit it with a ton of bombs it won't give a shit. I think the subs are a bit too hard to crack. It's hard to hit them and when you hit them it's not guaranteed to sunk them but they always keep their speed and maneuverability. It's challenging but I think it's a bit too much for real. The atmosphere is awesome and the voiceacting too.

Good fun, tutorial was lengthy but informative and as an avid sub sim fan it's a nice change to have a surface ship to command, gameplay is quite similar to the silent hunter series which i appreciated immensely, made picking up the navigation between stations easier to get used to i think. Straight out of the tutorial i sucked lost my convoy and eventually crashed into another escort but second time around i managed to sink my target and even with a lot of the stations set to automatic it still gives you that satisfaction of getting your first uboat kill.. I mean even with the sonar and radar stuff done for you; there's still a lot of trial and error when it comes to hitting a sub with depth charges as they don't just sit there and wait for you to kill them they are actively evading giving you the whole cat and mouse feel as you're needing to adapt your speeds and course changes trying to guess which direction they're going to head next as you have to drop the charges ahead of them.. if you're into sub sims and love evading destroyers as much as I do, you'll enjoy trying to trap the uboats with your surface vessels just the same, as the lead destroyer you have limited control over other escort ships in your convoy as well as aircraft sometimes. If you miss your mark and have to catch up with the convoy after losing the uboat you can extend your search area using one of your subordinate vessels or utilise the aircraft search.. Great game, limited content as expected in Early Access but so much potential.. Already have it listed in my favourites, can't wait to see what the devs bring in future updates :)

It's pretty raw at the moment but Destroyer does a few things really well:

It looks great, it sounds AMAZING, it has a TON of promise. It really does capture the feel of being an overworked convoy escort in the middle of the Atlantic. The major issue at the moment is weirdly, it sort of feels a bit like a boardgame at the moment. Your guns feel like they're rolling a dice to hit and nothing you can really do improves your aim and the shell splashes don't match the tracer. The radar and sonar look awesome... but at times it feels like there's a sort of built in fog off war that has you chasing ghosts that move like they're being controlled by some sort of card drawing system rather than a real AI... except those ghosts surface and look like real submarines sometimes... but then vanish.

But it's early days and the AI, shooting and sub movement can all be improved as it goes along. If they can manage that and throw in a campaign and some quality of life improvements like more shortcut keys etc. it could be amazing.

As far as the mechanics go this is a very interesting and sound game, but I feel like limiting factor of this game is it's only a single-player game and that to me at least is what hampers the longevity of this game. After you play for a good bit of hours you've basically seen all there is to see. I feel like if your friends were able to command the other escorts in the fleet that would make it better and give the game some longevity. My friends love the idea of the game but are disappointed that it's not CO-OP and that has stopped them from purchasing the game. I really wanna recommend this game but after after a couple of hours it gets a bit stale by yourself.

Despite being one week into the initial early release, the game is actually quite good. While I was skeptical at first, given the number of negative reviews, I decided to take the leap.

Overall, I would say it's a 3.5/5 star game in the current state.

Would I suggest buying it?
Yes, but with the knowledge that it is a very difficult game to play, and not for the casual player.

The tutorial is very complicated, and not particularly well organized. It runs what effectively should be 10 tutorial sections into a single tutorial. This makes for a very difficult and frustrating learning experience, when there are many stations to learn.

While some of the stations are automated, there's still a very significant degree of multitasking that goes into hunting a sub. For a casual, or novice player, this can become overwhelming, and frustrating. On the other hand, it is very engaging, and does provide a good thrill when you finally sink the sub.

Also, as it is early access, current functionality is limited. There is no current campaign, and battles are restricted to either custom format, or preset battles.

In conclusion, the game has great potential as a solid game, but there are several issues, and minor bugs that need to be addressed. Still, if you are looking for a good Navy sim game, the game is worth consideration.

If you show the movie Greyhound and though that as cool this game is basically exactly like that, a really cool project and I hope they put all the features they plan on putting in, the game can be difficult but extremely rewarding when you finally manage to sink a sub, all in all worth it in my book.

I played one game so far, I'm going to wait for more content to play more. From what I have seen the game is on course to be really really awesome, when I played I lost one ship but managed to sink a U-boat, and damage two others. A lot of the reviews that you see are from people who obviously don't understand that early access is just that, early access. Don't get fooled by the brain-dead reviews, the game is ok in its current state, it will of course improve over time. So if you want a more fleshed out game you should wait until it gets updated more, and don't leave stupid reviews until then.

Second..im playing on a older laptop under some low fps at times. I will buy a new laptop when this game gets out of early release.
Love the game. At one point i was chasing a sub in tight circles with 2 other destroyers, dropping the whole navy supply of depth charges on it. Without sinking it. At a certain point, it was time for bed. 4 hours later.
Im addicted and refuse to play during the week or i wont make it to work.🤣 even with a slow hp laptop.
I did blast a sub on the first attack and what a feeling of accomplishment. Should have joined the navy instead of the army, but i dont swim. 🤦‍♂️

If you like realistic naval simulators without the ridiculous War Thunder water physics this game is for you. It is still in the works but very playable single missions atm. This is an awesome destroyer sim. The ship handles properly and physics are spot on. plotting DRT will improve if they add a semi-automatic plotting with the ability to manually forward plot target and ship tracks. Only thing missing is a experience driven tech tree with ship improvements, sonar, depthcharges and please, please, please, add hedgehogs. Last thing, please add hedgehogs.

update: i learned how to plot the DRT, it is already semi-automatic, and u can plot target and hunter tracks, only thing missing is the relative velocity calculator(rel-vel sheets) but sonar op relays opening/closing/port/starboard changes

This game is just... horrendously bad, the auto settings for the trr and all that just don;t work, not to mention the uboat is somehow magically going from bearing 270 to 090, just a magic 180 degree turn in naught and a half seconds. my advice to the devs, take it out of early access till it's more functional.

Subs are VERY maneuverable when you're just about to drop your depth charges on them. I just had one sub turn a full 180 degrees in less than 300 yards. I don't think this is something a real U Boat would have been able to do. Subs are very hard to kill, be prepared.

TLDR: Worth the money now, will be much better soon, and is already a good entertainment value for the money. There are some issues with subs being too good and other game mechanics that need work, but what is there is solid and a relative bargain at the early release price. Investing now also helps ensure the quality of the later game. Make their Q4 and give yourself something fun to play for the holidays. You'll help all of us who already did invest, it's fun to be the hunter, in a way almost no other game does.

This game oozes potential! It's already got a lot going for it but I'm eager for better U-boat tactics and some bug fixes. As it stands right now, you can pick one of three scenarios or create a custom one.

Expect to take a little time getting used to the tools you have at your disposal. I've also noticed quite a few bugs with the auto-TRR/DRT but nothing you can't compensate for once you understand the data you're seeing. There is so much potential here, I'm so excited to finally get to play the role of convoy escort!

After about 6 total hours of figuring it out, I've gotten to a point where I can consistently plan an attack and drop depth charges exactly where I intend to relative to the U-boat. I can finally say I've scored a solid, confirmed kill.

If you have any familiarity with sub sims and understand the geometry to some degree, you will absolutely love this. I can't wait to get in and start plotting contacts myself, but for now, I've enjoyed the hell out of what's there.
