This game is great, unique and beautiful point and click. But not your average - inventory pick up, rather than solving crimes along the way. It was very short and a very easy but I ONLY RECOMMEND IF ON SALE, it is not worth full price for the time length.

Forgot to review when I first played the game, but absolutely love Detective Grimoire. The story plays out really well, the puzzles are interesting without being frustrating, and the voice-acting is spot on. Definite recommend to everyone I know!

I absolutely loved this game it made me feel like a real detective. The challenges were difficult but logical.

An earlier game from the developer of the excellent Tangle Tower, Detective Grimoire similarly follows the eponymous detective, with very similar key mechanics. Gameplay focuses on the investigation of a recent murder in a swamp, with the supposed prime suspect being a mysterious swap 'creature'. Regardless of that theme, the game is delightfully light-hearted throughout, communicated mainly through witty dialogue exchanges with various characters, each being in the area for their own reasons. Ultimately, the investigatory interviews of each character can be thoroughly 'mined' for information by clicking through options in sequence and/or trial-and-error, but they remain enjoyable. There are occasionally some slightly *too* well-hidden item in the Ace Attorney-style scene investigations, but fortunately this was for at most two instances throughout the game, and quite possibly I'd overlooked something that would have made it obvious!

This is a fun short cartoony game about a murder in a swamp by a maybe mythical cryptozoid called Boggy. There's a total of three games in the series (when this was written), this is the only one I've played. I'm going to be playing the other two! The only folks this game wouldn't appeal to are those who have no sense of awe, humor and/or fun, and those who think that a cartoony cryptozoid creature is no basis for a game. Those folks should be avoided anyway.

Interesting twist on classical point and click gameplay mechanics. I like how the puzzles force you to understand the story, not just blindly click on everything.

Detective Grimoire is only engaging for a younger audience. It's fully voiced, cartoony, and has a lot of optional hand-holding features. The mystery isn't really engaging for an adult.

If you're older than 13, you probably won't get anything out of this game, but I appreciate it for what it is.

Detective Grimoire is certainly not for everyone, but if you are like me, the story and the characters will be enough to make you want to not shut the game down until you solved the whole thing.
Admittedly this is not a very difficult thing to do, the game is not especially difficult and other than a couple hiccups it's almost always clear what should be done next. On the other hand it's really easy to get into a flow state of uncovering new clues, talking to suspects and it's suddenly 1 AM and you almost solved the mystery.
The art style and animations are charming and the quirky characters are very memorable. Nobody will have any problems remembering who they met at which location.
It's also recommended to play before jumping into the excellent Tangle Tower, even though the connection between the two games is not really explained, players who played Detective Grimoire will see many points of connection between the two.
My only complaint is that I want more of this game, not because I think it's overpriced (I think it is certainly a good price for the value) but because I want to spend more time in this colorful and mysterious world.

An interesting step in the series' direction. The sequel, Tangle Tower, is extremely good, and this is okay. Fun murder mystery with good character design, but it still feels like it hasn't quite found its footing,

Meh, this feels more like an overblown hidden object game than a real point & click adventure. Not that I have anything against hidden object games; I have played quite a few HOGs in recent years and I enjoy them when I am in the mood for something casual. However even if we judge Detective Grimoire as a HOG it still does not measure up to the current standard of games being published by Artifex Mundi -- the story is simple and cartoonish, the puzzles are absurdly easy, the sound design is lacking, and the artwork is crude and unappealing (at least to my eye).

About the only positive things I can say about Detective Grimoire is that the voice acting is decent, and it is easy to get all of the achievements in one 3-4 hour playthrough. It's not a bad game, and I think kids might like it, but if you are an adult looking for some depth you will not find it here.

I first learned of this game from a Kickstarter buddy of mine who had backed the game and suggested I might like it. She was correct. I played this on my Android phone and had a lot of fun. I just got the game for Steam as the Android version is too old now and there doesn't seem to be an upgrade. This game was well worth purchasing again for the different platform.

As to the PC game, this short little game is a lot of fun and brings you back to the old point and click games with a twist! As you solve the mystery of the swamp, you make deductions and solve mild puzzles along the way. You meet an interesting cast of characters and you have to figure out the culprit among them. You also find things out about the victim and the game ends on a fun cliffhanger that is partially resolved in the follow on game, Tangle Tower.

A very fun detective point and click. The story wasn't as predictable as I thought it would be. The story unfolded really well as you look for clues and investigate people. Some mechanics are very unique and fun. There's a good sense of humor throughout all the dialogue. The art style, characters, and voice acting are great. Only downside is that it's very short. I highly recommend this though.

This ran just fine on Linux with Proton Experimental. There was one sound issue and you just have to change a timing variable for the sound in one of the files, but otherwise runs perfectly.

A detective story from your childhood

In my opinion, the best way to picture this game is as follows - imagine you're 5-10 years old, it's a cold winter evening during the holidays, you're sitting in front of a TV and click through channels. Suddenly, you stumble upon some cartoon channel like Fox Kids (or Jetix, or Cartoon Network) and you see the intro to an episode of some unknown detective TV series. "Well, why not..." - you think as you watch through 2-3 episodes of one single detective story. You're captivated by the witty humour, expressive characters and memorable voice acting. You have a great time and the story ends with a light cliffhanger, hinting at future adventures of the title's hero.

That's how I felt about this game. It's an easy, and somewhat childish detective mystery with great characters and rather predictable plot, for an adult mind that is. It's easy to pick up and play and it's pretty short in length. And your progress is tracked clearly in the interface.

Overall, it's a cute little adventure for a few evenings, but if you come here expecting a Sherlock Holmes / Ace Attorney kind of intricate story, then you'll be left disappointed. The game attracts you not with its complex twists and turns, but instead with its nostalgic simplicity, not at all losing its unique charm in the process.

This game was everything I love in a detective point and click, and is good value for money.

The storyline is a quirky and super engrossing, the challenge itself is the right balance of difficulty/fun for the story, and it asks you to make reasonable conclusions without being too on the nose.

I loved the characters, the animation, and the humour that flows through all of the dialogue.

I would have loved this game to be longer, and I'm really looking forward to what comes next.

I think the word charming would be a great adjective to describe this game. It's a fairly easy detective point and click type of game with great voice acting, sound and characters. I finished it within 3 hours but it's fun to revisit every once in a while, although there isn't much replay value. All in all, definitely recommend :)

This game has been sitting in my library unplayed for more years than I'd care to count. Bored one evening I finally decided to try it out. I am thankful that I did. Somehow this game managed to evoke a feeling of nostalgia, it had an old-timey feel to it, reminding me of games such as "Monkey Island". I would recommend this game on the base gameplay alone, although a little simplistic and very short, the overall story is interesting and not at all boring.

Short, kinda point 'n click with several unique mechanics, detective game with unique characters and story.

Perhaps it'd be fair to say it's not really in the point 'n click genre, but more interactive story with some unique puzzle and deduction system mechanics instead. You go around looking for evidence and interesting stuff, you talk to everyone around, and you build up and slowly decipher the story. Big focus on characters in this one.

It is pretty short, but interesting and entertaining. Good voice work too.

The game is broken on Linux. First, it has a problem with the sound. This can be fixed manually. Second, the game stops responding to input after a few minutes. This can't be fixed. I never played this game for more than a few minutes, but I can't get a refund.

I 100%'d this game in 3 hours of playing. I was interested because I finished Tangle Tower when it released on the Switch. I really enjoy the games art style, voice acting, and music and find point and click adventures like this entertaining every once in a while.

This is not necessarily a direct prequel to Tangle Tower, but hints of Tangle Tower and some of its residents are hidden within this game if one knows what to look for--which are like amusing little Easter Eggs for longtime fans. Sally Spears is a recurring character who appears in this game, along with some others that are hinted. The Detective Grimoire series seems to be interconnected in this way, but it is not necessary to play the other games in order to ascertain the plotline or enjoy the game by any means.

However, if you do like Tangle Tower, I would recommend this game. The gameplay is alike--explore a map, discover clues, interrogate suspects, solve puzzles, and use all your accumulated information to connect the dots of a mystery. It is fully voice acted, has a charming soundtrack, and allows the player to explore in a non-linear fashion--only prompting certain decisions to nudge the player in the right direction or proceed to the next sequence. You do not have to find every clue or complete every puzzle to complete the game, but it is recommended. Likewise, should a player fail an interrogation or puzzle, the player is not punished and can repeat the sequences as often as needed.

An interesting feature in this game is the level of suspicion, where a player can track the suspicious findings that fit an individual character. A player can decide if these pieces of information are relevant or not and mark them as suspicious or not--essentially to help the player narrow down the suspects. You get an achievement if you put all your suspicions on one individual.

However, as the short play time might indicate, this game is quite easy. A classic 'who did it' that--for me--was relatively easy to follow and ascertain who the murderer was. If you are looking for a slight challenge, you can turn off the feature that 'highlights' clues on the screen (making them less obvious to find), but I played without them and still 100% completed the game in 3 hours and got all the achievements. Not for players who want a challenge or a long play through. That said, if you just want a cute, fun game to pass the time with and not stress over--definitely would recommend. I got this game for under $10 USD and it was worth it for me--maybe not if paying over that. For those of you with kids, they might enjoy something like this and the content is quite age appropriate. No swearing, no explicit images--the developers do an overall good job of keeping the violence to a minimum (tiny blood splatters is really the most graphic thing shown).

Hope this helps!

A charming point&click adventure game. Has a more intricate plot and more mechanical depth than it's wonderful but admittedly somewhat cutesy design might lead you to believe. Nothing is mind-blowing, but everything is nice and competently put together. Also, the characters are really nice. Will provide a few hours of pleasant head-scratching and the occasional chuckle.

Recommended for traditionalist adventure gamers, and fans of visual novels and walking sim that want something with a bit more bite puzzlewise.

I got this game after having played Tangled Tower on the Switch. At first, I was put off by the different art style, but the animation is nice and it has full voice acting, which is fantastic. The story was short, but enjoyable. If you like games like Phoenix Wright or Professor Layton, and especially if you liked Tangled Tower, I definitely recommend this game.

Having come here from Tangle Tower, it's strange seeing the de-evolution of the genre. Starting up the game with border details turned on, the GUI immediately felt clustered and even after turning them off, still felt a little less polished than its sequel. However, the game still had the fun investigation from Tangle Tower and while the mystery here is slightly less deep and polished, there's still a fun cast of quirky characters to meet and talk with. If you enjoy tangle tower and want to see more, would definitely recommend checking this out! It's even got Sally, who while not your assistant is here and awesome.

Another improvement made in twisted tower is written responses from each character for each piece of evidence, even if unrelated to them. This game uses the generic set of 3 or 4 'I don't know' statements for 80% of the clues not related to the witness you're talking too, which means going through them is a bit less interesting here than it was in Tangle Tower.
Of course, while these are criticisms, they're more demonstrations of how many improvements have been made between the two games and really get me excited to see the next instalment. You've earned yourself a new fan devs, thank you for all the work you've done and continue to do!

Interesting game with a approachable art style. Substance was engaging altho brief took me about 2.5 hours to 100% it without paying too much attention whilst doing other IRL things. Not sure what the age group is aimed at, but i would think that 10-13 year-old's would enjoy this one. I bought it on Steam at a pretty deep discount, and I'm happy with my money's worth. Only played thru once, so i'm not sure about the repeatability, but unless things are randomly generated each time, it's more like an interactive book than a playable experience. If i were to make it more challenging, it would be to have some sort of penalty system for making incorrect choices, i just seemed to be able to click everything until i clicked the right thing if the answer wasn't somewhat obvious. I did like playing it tho, it's a fun little romp.

Broken on Linux. I could see menu buttons only when I moused over them and had to guess my way through. I saw a cut-scene and then had a black screen where I could not see or do anything.

As a backup, I tried the game with Proton. It launched fine and I could see the interface. The cut scenes had audio but was otherwise a blank screen. The game interface did show and I was able to play from there, ignoring the blank cut scenes. Unfortunately, settings did not persist from one play session to another (this may be a Proton problem, but maybe it is another problem with the game).

Overall, it was a decent game but the technical problems due to the ancient, unsupported Adobe Air platform force me to not recommend this game. Frankly, it should not be sold anymore.

"Detective Grimoire" is a small crime point and click adventure that lets you play as a detective who has to solve a peculiar murder case. With mysterious atmosphere, unique characters, vivid visuals, well written dialogues and fantastic music it manages to offer an entertaining experience. Unfortunately it seems to be too clunky and easy for my taste. Weird, huge menus layout, simplistic puzzles and pretty straight forward logic gave me the impression of a cheap mobile game made for children. It was decent, but I would describe it mostly as an entertaining software rather than a real adventure game.

Manometer: 6/10

The good
- Cool aesthetics. Nice cartoonish graphics with vivid colors.
- Mysterious atmosphere that fits perfectly to a crime game.
- Well crafted, visually unique characters.
- Interrogations' gameplay mechanics are enjoyable and at some points, when pieces start to come together, it makes you feel like a real detective.
- Music is probably the best element of the game. Simply fantastic.
- Good voice acting performances. Some of them are hilarious.
- Well written dialogues. Good sense of humor.
- Suitable for children in order to help them evolve their logic and critical thought.

The bad
- Puzzles are extremely simplistic and easy. Its overall logic is pretty straight forward. It is more of an educational software for children which is ok, but it would be better if this was clearly written in the store's description.
- Weird menus layout with huge buttons and uninspiring controls. It seems to me like a game made for smartphones. Also I am not a big fun of first person point and click adventures.
- The story is descent enough, but it never escalates, neither offers a clever revelation at the end like usual detective stories.
- Clunky, repetitive animations that make it look cheap.
- It is too short.

While a relatively short game (all achievements can be done under 3 hours), this is a very well organized point and click adventure game. The mystery is easily solvable, and the game doesn't hold you hand leaving you to the next clue. The fun thing about it is that it makes sure you know what's going on periodically, needing to make statements about certain clues and suspects, while at the same time not assuming your dumb and will advance the past certain points when they have made an aspect clear.

If I have to criticize the game for one thing, its the "puzzle games". Honestly, they don't add anything to the experience, nor are they challenging enough to feel like an accomplishment when solved. It feels tacked on cause it needed to be more like Professor Layton when that energy could have gone to other systems that DO work in this game.

Also you can fast travel on the map. Serious that needs to happen more in Point & Clicks.

Honestly speaking, the 1st game I tried from this developer didn't end well, that's the reason this game is kept in the backlog of mine for a long while even when i did bought it back then. But then again, they are different genre so i figured I should give this game a try afterall... It turned out that, the devs are better in story telling than building lousy AIs, and I regretted not trying this earlier. This game, though short and simple, is a fine example of a good story telling and using the right tools for doing so. Combined with the unique artwork designs that got me to buy their games in the 1st place, this turned out to be a really pleasant journey. Good job!

This is a fun game that gives you every opportunity for completion. Seems you can guess correctly or just keep making different choices until the correct choice progresses you through each chapter. The voice acting is superb and the humor makes this a fun game to consider for most ages.

+ Adorable and memorable characters
+ Really nice voice-acting - my personal favourite part
+ Interesting story - relative to its length and depth, any longer and it'd be slightly boring
+ Cute game design overall
+ The soundtracks fit the game perfectly and they're for sure something I'd add to my list

* The game basically holds your hand throughout the entire thing and it's really never a challenge. This isn't necessarily a negative point, it's a design choice the devs made but keep this in mind

Good: Nice animations, crisp even in 4K. Engaging story with a rich cast
Bad: Puzzles are just a bit too easy, you just follow the path, talk to everyone, show them everything. No penalty for wrong actions. Felt like a visual novel where choices did not matter
Verdict: 7. Good time waster for a few hours (given its price). Recommended to kids especially.

This is a very simple and mostly endearing point and click adventure for fans of the genre, and while it isn't going to blow you away, there are far worse ways to spend 2 or 3 hours. I especially liked the design choices, the charming setting, and the method of drawing conclusions about the discoveries that have been made from time to time. You can tell that some genuine care went into the game. If you have a free afternoon and you can catch this one on sale, I think it's worth consideration.

Sometimes the voice clips are not leveled or the transition is a little off, maybe for different times of recording as in prototype, demo, kickstarter? and the rest were recorded later. Anyways, the voice acting is quite good, the lines are performed well. Indeed as the game tells you, use headphones to fully enjoy. Dont hesitate to grab it on sale.

I've played this game twice in four years and that's already quite an achievement on its own. But what's more remarkable is that I've remembered it and my warm feelings towards it after four years since the first playthrough.

The atmosphere and the art style are gorgeous. Quirky and colourful cartoon characters pop out from the gloomy swamp backgrounds. And what's more important they are not cardboard cutouts and actually have some personality. All of them are pretty charismatic and likeable. Voice acting is great too and suits characters well. The soundtrack is good and adds a lot to the atmosphere.

The real murderer is easy to deduce and it's pretty logical and plausible. Though the game won't let you make wrong assumptions and give you as many second chances as you need. This game has very, VERY easy and casual puzzles, maybe way too easy but on a second thought difficult puzzles would feel out of place here. Oh, and don't forget to turn off hints right at the beginning. Overall the story is good and enjoyable. If not all of the dialogues are fun but the majority of them truly are. The game isn't long so it won't bore you but it doesn't feel too short either.

A work of art in the shape of a point and click game..

First of all, we have an incredible mystery game that catches you about a police investigation of a murder. It sounds so simple that you might think it's just another detective game. In fact, yes, it's just a game about it lol, but the design, the story, how the plot unfolds throughout the game, the characters, the voices or the dialogue, it just hits you differently, it all links and fits perfectly. Also, we have to highlight about the dynamics of the game just how it works there are no difficult or inconsistent puzzles. What's more, we're talking about a short game but one that's enjoyed throughout the 3 or 4 hours that you dedicate to it while you have to solve the mystery by going through some clues.

🔍 I highly recommend buying the game and playing it with the original voices without dubbing. You won't be disappointed, and if you see it on sale don't think twice, buy it cause it's like getting gold for the price of a rock. It's like everything fits perfectly into the game (soundtrack, voices, characters, graphics, gameplay). 🔍

I actually played the sequel to this, Tangle Tower, before I knew this one existed, and I similarly found it very enjoyable. Detective Grimoire is a bit shorter than Tangle Tower, and a bit less of a challenge, but still good fun, with amusing characters & dialogue, and I enjoyed unravelling the mystery.

I hope there will be more games in this series to come!

Detective Grimoire is a short-and-sweet point-and-click detective game where you play as the titular character as he investigates a murder in a remote swamp-based tourist attraction. The game unfolds through investigating the scenes, completing simple puzzles and talking to the people who live and work in the swamp.

+Great art that holds up even 8 years on due to its style, reminiscent of Double Fine games, particularly Psychonauts
+Great character design (with the exception of Grimoire himself, who is quite the ugly looking character imo) and the characters are interesting to talk to
+Great voice acting (with the exception of the Little Girl, who seems to be the only character who's lines weren't recorded in a booth)
+Compelling mystery and great location

-The puzzles are so simple that they may as well have not been included

It goes on sale for just over a dollar these days, so if you're interested in detective point-and-click games I'd say it's well worth picking up.

A charming point and click murder mystery.

It's all over in a couple of hours and the mystery itself isn't very tricky, but it has some fun mechanics that differentiate it from the average point-and-click game. Very cheap (especially when on offer) and worth a go.

I think of it as a 2hr tutorial for Tangle Tower.

Got through this in a day. Once again the voice acting, designs and animations and dialogue were lovely. The puzzles here weren't hard but as someone who prefers more story element than puzzles I was okay with that.

The mystery element wasn't as strong here. It just didn't seem like anyone here could be the suspect and the challenges weren't all around the murder, just on something unrelated to it (except for a couple of characters). It became pretty clear early on who done it. Could have also done without the little girl personally. I did enjoy investigating the victim's life though.

A nice enough game, but agree with other reviewers that the puzzles were far too easy, as was the game as a whole. Nothing was really challenging and it was pretty obvious who the murderer was from the moment they opened their mouth! Based on that I wouldn't really recommend it to someone, but hey if you have some time to kill (or like me wanted to play it before starting the apparently amazing sequel) why not?

Now that I've played Detective Grimoire and its sequel, Tangle Tower, where Sally has a much larger role, I find that I've been charmed by this point and click game series at it follows the Remington family and the mystery behind cryptids, mystids, and a mysterious secret society's golden beetle. When you figure out who the murderer is very, very early on in the game… it makes the rest of the game kind of feel like a slog because you just have to collect enough *stuff* to make the detective realize what’s going on.

The game doesn’t really pose any real challenge or head-scratcher at any point in time, and the playtime was pretty darn short for a point-and-click game. But I will say I very much enjoyed the charming animation and the fact that it’s fully voice-acted. It would be a really great experience for a young player perhaps! For that reason, I am recommending it, but with the disclaimer of “might not be totally satisfying for an adult to play, but definitely get it for your kiddos (as long as they're old enough for murder mysteries).”

I recommend with reservations. It seems as if the mechanics are a little tedious. Find your way to the correct location to interview certain people in situ, pick up clues, etc. Fine if you don't have any trouble finding your way without excessive backtracking. Also the necessity to try all the dialogue choices makes it a bit tedious. The subsequent game with Detective Grimoire, Tangled Tower, is more interesting.

Was a very well produced with some unique Gameplay aspects i've never seen before. That said the game is pretty short, but the price reflects that duration.

it was fun and good art style. good story too.

A fun, cute, humorous little game. Took me about 3 hours to fully complete it. I figured out the culprit within about an hour. Maybe a tad more. Quite easy (which suits me just fine because I usually suck at these.)
A whodunit detective story, but without the edge. I think I would've loved it in my childhood/early teens. I like it now as well, and I'm a fair few years over the target demographic.

Quality-wise: really charming art-style, pretty soundtrack. I noticed slight problems with compression of some pre-rendered animations, and the audio could use a bit of clean-up, but nothing that'd take the enjoyment out of the game.

Overall? I'd give it a... 7.5/10. 9/10 if I'd played it 10 years ago. Juuust about worth the price, but I wouldn't not recommend waiting for a sale. And if you're not sure you'd enjoy it, well, this is the desktop sequel to a flash game of the same name... There's also a few references to the flash game!

A short, sweet point-and-click adventure game, equal parts comedy and mystery. The interface is a little cluttered, but the music is positively transcendent -- so it all evens out in the end. Can't wait to play the sequel!

Very short, but sweet. The padlock thing passed me by, though...
I played Tangle Tower first, so it seemed a bit short, but good for its price!
A very nice point-and-click title.
