If you plan on doing a single play through this could be considered the weakest of the of DMCs after 1 and 2 (Still very good, just not as great as 3 or 5) However, if you want an action game to sink thousands of hours into and look like the absolute coolest most badass mofo there is, no other DMC or action game is better than 4.

There and back again, a thousand demons in your way. Nero's grapple arm is a slick addition to combos, too! With the amount of playable characters being a hefty five, I don't think retreading the entire map to extend game length was at all necessary.

I would only recommend this game only for huge DMC fans in my opinion this game is an alright one time play-through, but unlike most DMC games (particularly 1,3 and 5) I do not see myself revisiting this title ever and this is because a number of issues this game has. Starting off the annoying and frustrating puzzles that interrupt from the gameplay are way more present in 4 than in other titles I understand why puzzles like this are in the game but the other abundance of them is just unnecessary. Next I don't find many of the enemies of this game to be particularly fun to fight because a lot of them interrupt combos without warning and they are just annoyingly gimmicky in general that just exists to punish the player prime example being the Fault. Also the story in this game isn't that good but this is a DMC game so that's not that crazy. I do think Nero is over hated in this game but I wish for a new protagonist in the series they made him more unique in 4 because he feels too similar to Dante. Lastly the amount of backtracking in 4 is absurd I am aware of the development issues this game had but it's extremely unfortunate that Capcom rushed this game because it would have been cool to see a larger boss variety.

Very good story and the graphics got better, compared to dmc3 of course. The level repeating with Dante isn't that bad but it would have been better if they made new ones.Solid OST as always and the gameplay is fun.

8.5/10 pick Nero/Dante for your first playthrough and leave Trish/Lady/Vergil for later.

Good old DMC4 with extras

Functionally the same as the original DMC4, but with more playable characters. Shame they couldn't make a better Dante campaign like originally planned, but I won't deny that it's fun to play around with other characters and mechanics.

I haven't played DMC 5 yet. So, for now, this is my favorite DMC game in the series. The story is a classic experience and holds up well. The gameplay is nice and fresh with the addition of Nero's abilities. Getting to play as all the characters is a welcome addition, with the only downside being that the only story for any of them besides the main Nero/Dante campaign is at the very beginning and very end of their campaigns. None of the bosses offer any additional dialogue to enjoy. I will say I probably had a better time from obtaining all the currency included with the Demon Hunter Bundle. I always make sure I can enjoy a story before anything else about a game. So, it was a plus to not have to grind for currency and just get through the story.

You play dante for like 15 minutes and it's all just replaying nero's stuff. Which isn't even good content to begin with. This is possibly my most disliked game that I've played in both my teen and adult life.

The only redeeming qualities were some of the cutscenes being laughably terrible, Dante's gameplay as a concept (with the very short amount of time you get with it while also just doing lame fucking trash gameplay tasks the entire time) is quite fun, but not fleshed out enough. It's obviously unfinished. The final redeeming quality is that you can zoom the camera in during the cutscenes with R2 and pan around with RS. This can be funny with a friend.

Don't even get me started on how this port can't even launch with a second hard drive plugged in.

So your probably wondering why I only have 6.5 hours... first of all I already played this on PS4 and well I just wanted to clear through the first campaign only with nero/dante so I could rush to DMC 5 as quickly as possible until I realized that I had the Complete bundle which includes the infamous reboot DMC: Devil May Cry game that I never really got to play..... I would put more hours into this game to play as the other characters but I have other steam games in my library calling out to me first.

First of all let me tell you about something, CAPCOM sucks on PC. You think you should patch a fix that it literally doesn't crash when all I want to do is play the game.... I only got into the main screen but whenever I tried to load it just crashed the whole thing, way to go CAPCOM in your terrible optimization didn't even bother to fix something as BASIC to START to play the game without it crashing... honestly just what the hell. I even downloaded a HxD editor to mess with the games exe launch with the instructions online but even that didn't work. At the end of the day though, I figured out the problem was apparently the overlays I have on my game like Discord and Geforce Experience applications... so I disabled the overlays on those and I was finally able to play it but that's just a really annoying workaround just to finally play this game. Keep in mind though this isn't the only CAPCOM game that's effected by this kind of crashing just to point out that they don't check well what they are porting to PC.

That being said though, I think this is actually one of my favorite DMC games, even more than DMC 1 yes shocking I know.... but I actually liked nero as a protagonist and I though his girlfriend was okay too despite her just being the damsel in distress in this game. And yes I would argue that playing as Dante in the later half is extremely satisfying also, the briefcase gun he has is so cool but the game play was definitely revolved around nero considering his devil arm is used to solve some puzzles and deal with specific enemies... neros sword is also really cool, like the idea that he ramps up his sword like a motorcycle to deal additional damage its really awesome. Both of them are really cool, though this dante just feels like they ported all the moves from DMC 3 over to this game and didn't change any of the styles for dante just his weapons a bit.... but its cool now we get to switch styles on command instead of a menu and be able to change ALL the weapons for some epic combos. So at least you can be safe, that the core game play is really good.

I don't really think I had much negative points to the game, I actually enjoyed the bosses. Nero could have used a bit more different weapons though, and there is a hint of that the game does feel unfinished and that's true... Lady and Trish are here and they barely have anything to do with the actual plot expect with Trish going undercover in an overly sexual outfit.

The Special Edition lets you play as Vergil and also Lady/Trish to give some additional story context which is mostly why the game feels unfinished as it is but as I said I enjoyed it. Oh but screw that dice mini-game, who though that was a good idea to put in nero's campaign to lead to not just one boss, but also the final boss? its completely random so you have 0 hope where that dice even lands on.. even Dante didn't like the dice game.

Overall though I recommend it... is it a silly plot? Yes, but I think when you read through the FULL DMC timeline (with the added official manga/novels added) it really adds to the overall plot of DMC and your going to enjoy this one.

Now if you excuse me I have a more... erm... emo dante to playthough, wish me luck on that.

I like this game but the story is boring, the cutscenes are too long; my controller disconected wating for the cutscenes to end. Dante's side of the story was good, gameplay wise.
There's repeating bosses, gets boring in the end, c'mon I already fought them twice...
The gameplay is good tho, still some issues with the targeting and camera but good enough.

BUT totally worth it if you like the series

Overall a pretty solid DMC, but a tad strange. You see, you spend around half the game as Nero and then half of it as Dante. Nero is interesting but hard to get a hold off because Exceed and Ex-Act can have some tricky timing, but once it clicks it clicks hard and you absolutely demolish the demons. Then, around mission 12 you switch over to dante which plays like DMC3 Dante at first, but you get 3 new devil arms and wield ALL of them at once. Very overwhelming for a first time player I think, but extremely fun as someone who has played DMC3. Sadly, Dante doesn't get much play time and then you are back to Nero for the rest of the game.

Overall 8.5/10, A song says "The time has come and so have I" in this game so you know it is good

I liked this game a lot! I think the setting was interesting, but the actual playable map was too linear and backtracky. Nero was a refreshing new protagonist too, he was really fun to play. I missed Dante's stupid, quippy attitude for a lot of the game, but thankfully he gets his moments to shine. I think it was a good follow-up to 3, but it doesn't do enough to innovate gameplay-wise, outside of giving us a new character with a new moveset.

I recommend this game under 2 conditions:

1. You recognize that the original released in 2008 and you are willing to deal with it being a little clunkier than the Steam release date makes it seem

2. You want to go play DMC 5.

Now, addressing the main issues of the game come down to the age of the game. This game is over a decade old and some things have changed with time. The controls are kind of clunky compared to modern games kind of like it, but the big issue is the camera. Sometimes you get 3rd person control, but it's generally for short moments. Otherwise, you get fixed camera angles, which throws off you movement direction until you get used to it and makes dodging and directional inputs kind of a pain at first. This is honestly my only real complaint.

On the other hand, the game is fun and easy enough to pick up, but if you want those SSS ranks, you're gonna have to get good at it. You feel yourself improving in ways I've really only seen in something like Sekiro, and it makes you feel like a badass. In addition, if you don't like the default controls, you can rebind them however you want.

The final thing of note is the story. Is it the greatest story ever told? No. Are you gonna go play DMC 5? If yes, you'll want this. Otherwise you'll just be like, "Who tf is Nero? What's with his arm? How did it become a sword? wtf?" Honestly, I'd recommend playing 3 and 4 before 5, but whatever. In addition, playing through this game will get you ready for 5 mechanically. Other than a few things, DMC 5 plays very much like a smoother, more refined 4. A lot of combos are still there with a lot more added. Being mediocre on this for you 1st playthrough will get you ready to get those S-SSS ranks in DMC 5.

Essentially, the game is good enough on it's own, but the following game makes this an easy recommendation just purely due to how it will affect your experience in the sequel.

I'm sure this was the nostalgic little DMC game in my old ios Ipod. It was hella fun, but I don't think I ever got far in the game because I was only like 5 or something. I remembered a guy in red and the name "Devil May Cry" was familiar, I just never ever looked into it. I'd never have thought that I'd get into the series, but thanks to one of my friends-he brought it up because he's so obsessed with woohoo wacky pizza man. Before I started any of the games officially though, I believed ignorantly that I could skip DMC4 because Dante was "ugly" and I severely reprimand my past self for that. Luckily my friend convinced me to get it because it was such a good game. I'm glad for all of these purchases. Thanks to my older sister.

While this game falls short in level design, combat feels fluid. The story is a bit over mediocre, definitely not the best that this series has to offer. I think that any DMC fan should definitely try it, it is not trash (DMC2 haha), but it's not a treasure trove, either. Overall, a decent game. I would rate it a 7/10.

tbh, not really worth a buy unless you really like dmc or if you want to play as lady/trish. gameplay is outshined by dmcv in every way except for dante having pandora and lucifer which are cool concepts but dont feel complete. the story is the definition of cliche and mediocre.

however, like i said, if youre dying to see more of what you love, this game does certainly exist. oh yeah, and it has that one cutscene with dante doing a shakespearian performance which is cool

WiseOldHooter

I started here. And I really shouldn't have... like this was my first DMC game, and it does not make a great impression! Oh boy... where to begin...

Some of the weirdest dialogues I have ever heard... no human being acts the way the characters in this game do. The contrivance has a plot formed around it! I mean I know no one plays these games for the story, but still... they could try a micrometer more... And I don't get the combat. It's stupid easy, you need feel in danger, there is noise all over the screen, the camera is AWFUL, and the environments look much weaker than a 2015 enhanced edition game should! like... wtf is the saving grace here? What do people like about this game? I couldn't tell you.

Just... don't buy if you're not already a fan... shit sucks...

The time has come, and so have I
I'll laugh last 'cause you came to die
The damage done, the pain subsides
And I can see the fear, clear, when I look in your eye.

I'll never kneel and I'll never rest,
You can tear the heart from my chest
I'll make you see what I do best,
I'll succeed as you breathe your very last breath.

Now I know how the angel fell
I know the tale, and I know it too well
I'll make you wish you had a soul to sell,
When I strike you down and send you straight to Hell.

My army comes from deep within
Beneath my soul, beneath my skin
As you are ending, I'm about to begin,
My strength is pain, and I will never give in.

I'll tell you now, I'm the one to survive,
You'll never break my fate or my stride
I'll have you choke on your own demise,
I make the angel scream, and the devil cry.

This is one of those games that was rushed but still managed to be a masterpiece. Even masterpieces can have flaws but i feel like the gameplay and the in depth combat really brings it up to be a masterpiece. The game is challenging and encourages you to get better at the game cuz it's so fun to pull of those combos. There is no other game that has combat this smooth and stylish without the game trying to cry about it.

Gameplay 9.5/10 - Some camera issues here and there but nothing too fancy when it comes to negatives.
Combat 11/10 - Nothing to really say about this cuz it hardly can get any better than this.
Story 7.5/10 - is good up until you reach the Dante part which is also kinda cool i guess. Cuz it's just Dante being a badass as he always is, Trying to clean up the mess Nero made.
Graphics: Really good for it's time and the art is amazing to look at

As far negatives go:
Boss fights are not that good except for a couple stand out ones like Credo which is an insane fight.
Bosses get repeated too much especially by the end of the game.
Some mobs are made around Nero's combat and not the other characters.
A couple achievements are a bit too challenging if you are an achievement hunter, They can be done with an insane amount of practice or you cheese them if there is a cheese for the achievement you wanna go for

Final rating: 9/10 - It could definitely be a 10/10 if the bosses weren't repeated too much / Bosses were better designed and i think the game is slightly too long which makes getting S ranks for missions a bit too dragged if you go for those achievements

Although it has a really simple trama and Dante's campaign being completely lackluster, it's a really good game. Not only improved DMC3 combat in every possible way, it also created a new path for improvements for it's successor (DMC5). I can easily say this game was, for a long period of time, the pinnacle of combat of the series and maybe the basis of quality for many other Hack'n'Slash games. It's crazy how solid the gameplay on this game is, even nowdays.

Also it gives you the opportunity to play not only with Vergil in this Special Edition (which by itself it is a huge deal), you can also play as Lady and Trish. And has Legendary Dark Knight Mode, the most fun difficulty in the game.

Review (Nero/Dante):

This is going to be a review focused mainly on Dante and Nero since the other playable characters have no major changes to the overall game except for unique combat and four new cutscenes.

Story and levels
The story is pretty cool and the perfect introduction to the new character, Nero. He is tasked with tracking the assassin who murdered a Priest and during this journey he discovers the real motives behind the Order of the Sword cult.

Nero's levels are pretty strange as you'll travel through a town, a snowy castle, a jungle and then a temple but still fun regardless. The levels are decent until you play as Dante where you end up backtracking through all the previous stages, this also means you have to fight the bosses again but at least they give you some cool weapons as a reward for this suffering. Everything from Missions 17 onwards is where the game picks up the pace again, and these last few missions are the highlight of the story for me.

Gameplay and Combat
The gameplay can be dull at first as you'll need to upgrade the characters skills to unlock certain combos and abilities but eventually it will improve as more skills are purchased.

Nero is a great addition to the series, he has a devil arm, a sword (which can be revved up) and a pistol that shoots TWO bullets at once. In terms of gameplay, Nero is an absolute demon against enemies and makes for some amazing moments with the devil buster attack, the attack where he swings Echidna around the map is one the most hilariously baffling things I've ever witnessed in a video game. Nero's devil arm can pull some enemies which are out of reach making it easy to pick off easy targets.
Nero's Red Queen sword is unique to Dante's Rebellion as Nero can use the exceed system (revving) to add faster attacks, you can charge this move by slowly revving it up or you can perform the mad exceed move during a combo however this requires perfect timing to master.
If you are new to Devil May Cry then Nero will help ease you into this game.

Combat has immensely improved for Dante as he can now switch styles and use more weapons at once which can result in some very stylish combos, absolutely love this addition, but takes some time getting used to. Due to the complexity of his moveset, it makes him a very fun character to learn and master overtime. Pandora is by far the coolest devil arm which Dante has acquired.

One of the best improvements to the gameplay is the ability to sprint, this is an addition I've been waiting for since the first game so it makes traversing better.

Another improvement to the game is forcing the enemies to attack only when they are visible in the camera. This is very useful in some situations as swarms of enemies can overwhelm you but simply moving the camera away from them will prevent this. This isn't always reliable but it can be a lifesaver in the harder gamemodes.

Enemies and bosses
While there is a small variety of enemies in this game, I'd say they are well balanced as it can vary from great to frustrating, especially during harder difficulties and Bloody Palace (who thought fighting 2 Blitz at Trish was fun games design is lying to themselves).
If I ever have to fight another Chimera, Blitz or Faust again I might stab myself with Yamato.

The bosses in this game are great, the Dante, Berial and Credo fights are perfect...then we have a boss battle where you throw swords at a guy behind a wall. Yup, that is not much fun.
Unfortunately, the game will force you to fight these bosses 2-3 times which becomes tedious on multiple playthroughs. To give you an estimate of how frequent this is, you'll fight Berial, Echidna, Bael/Dagon and Agnus over 26 times if you are going for every achievement.

Devil May Cry 4 keeps the action going with yet another solid installment in the DMC series. Starring Nero, a new protagonist who boasts a youthful brashness and a powerful *literal* Devil Arm, you'll go on yet another hack and slash adventure of combo-mastery and boss-fights. I did a singular playthrough of DMC 4 on normal (Devil Hunter) difficulty with Nero, and I had a pretty good time with it. Despite there being less Dante (he's still there for a little!), the game still kept its charm for the most part. Nero has some very satisfying gameplay with very fun-to-use combos. The game keeps its over-the-top nature throughout, though I would argue the sexualization of the women in this game was really pushed too far, to the point of ridiculousness (looking at you, "Gloria"). In terms of gameplay, I think my main con was that the boss diversity in this game is a little low. Because of how the story is told, you end up fighting the few bosses you encounter several times over and over, and while some change slightly with each instance, others are literally carbon copies of themselves from earlier in the game, which I would imagine gets a little boring on repeat playthroughs. This was one of my primary reasons for not replaying the game on higher difficulties or with other characters (I also started DMC 5 shortly after finishing DMC 4 and holy shit that game is so good I don't know why I'd ever go back). Overall, DMC 4 is pretty solid, and while it's definitely the weakest of DMC 3/4/5, I'd still play it if you're gonna play those three games, but maybe wait for a small sale.

Who the fuck is Nero?
I've finished the game, and still don't know.

This game is one of the most annoying experiences I've ever had, most of it felt like a chore, the levels are boring, most of the time you will fall and have to make your way up again because most of the levels are vertical, also, a lot of the time if you die and chose to continue you start the level from the begining, at that point you better restart it, it sucks.

The problem with the story is that Nero is trying too hard to be cool and you know absolutely nothing about him, his personal plot and romance is rushed and non interesting, plus his gameplay fkng sucks compared to Dante. The tyitle of this review wasn't a lie, starting the game you are like "ok this guy looks like a younger Dante and got a Devil arm for some reason, let's see how they explain who he really is and why he got that arm out of nowhere", and ending the game you end like "ok, so... who the fuck is Nero? They never explained anything about him and his boring ass Devil arm!!!".
I can only say ONE good thing about Nero: he fucking suplex some enemies (only "gold angels" tho) and Dante has never done that, it was so sick the first time I saw it I laughed hard lol

Most of the campaing (the canon one: Nero & Dante, you have Lady & Trish and Vergil solo BUT THEY ALL HAVE THE SAME LEVELS) is played by Nero, and the damn kid only has one really bad gun (that you can't even upgrade it's damage) and a normal sword, his Devil Bringer is a joke, most of the enemies die if you grab them 2-3 times, and that mean pressing the B button a couple of times, wow, so hard, also he has no styles, his abilities suck and are very few so you can't go crazy like you can with Dante on DMC3.
And speaking of Dante, his gameplay is "kinda" like DMC3 with styles and all but nerfed in every single way, you can BUY his habilities the very second you get to play with him because they give you like 20k Proud Souls and there isn't a "real" level system so you feel no proggersion, like, you can max out all the style level just by buying them, while on DMC3 you had to fight a loooot of enemies and shit to just get 1 lvl making for a good reason to replay that game, but it really is sad, and also he gets a new ranged weapon that is so fkng dumb it's not even funny, and his other "swords" are horrible.
Oh yeah, and that fkng Proud Souls thing, why??? Now the Red Orbs are useless because they are only used to buy items and other than the life and trigger upgrades you will not buy anything else since the game is not even that hard.

In terms of difficulty I think this is about the same as DMC1, some parts are hard but onse you begin to spam the same attacks it turns into a joke, not as easy as DMC2, but far from being hard like DMC3. Most of your fails (if you do die) will be because of the cheap desings of the bosses and enemies, or because of the bad level geometry and camera, not because of the game actually being hard.

The core of the story goes around DMC3 and Yamato wich is really sad, specially considering the canon order up to this point is DMC3-1-2-4 so that means they skiped 2 entire games like they never happened, all you need to know from those games is that Trish from DMC1 is back... yay? No one cares about her!!!
Other funny thing about this is that in case you haven't played the past games you will not understand most of this story, Who is Dante? Who is Trish? Who is Lady? What the fuck is a Yamato? Vergil? What does Sparda even mean???, to fix this you can watch "The Story of Devil May Cry", a short video explaining in detail the plots from DMC1,2&3, it is actually pretty helpful for a newcomer, so I HOPE YOU LIKE BEATING THE ENTIRE GAME AND WATCHING A STORY YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND JUST TO UNLOCK THE VIDEO YOU LITERALLY M.U.S.T WATCH BEFORE PLAYING THIS GAME!!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣

Other things I want to complain are the fact this game setting and artstyle makes it look like a damn Final Fantasy, the enemies are all boring and uninspired, the "angels" look more like humanoid mechas, and there are this "ghost" like enemies that keep going trought the walls again and again so you have to stop and wait for them to come back to keep fighting and that takes A LOT of time, they are the worst enemies by far, most of the time you have to fight like 3 at the same time and it's terrible!

And the final boss, man, what a fkng joke that was, legit, he is the weakest most easy motherfucker I've ever fought as a final boss, and his 2nd phase is an ever bigger joke since you literally beat him in 3 attacks, really, 3 attacks that you have to time correctly, and actually you don't even need to attack him, just press B (Devil Bringer) at the exact time 3 times baby!!!

ALSO, HOLY SHIT THOSE DICE LEVELS MAN, WHY THE FUCK DO WE HAVE TO USE A DICE TO PROGRESS ON A LEVEL? THAT IS THE WORST THING A GAME COULD HAVE, I HOPE THE ONE WITH THAT IDEA ON CAPCOM GOT FKNG FIRED, IT'S HORRIBLE, THANKS TO THAT MISSION 19 MAKES ME SICK, I SWEAR TO GOD THIS ALONE MAKES THIS GAME NOT WORTH YOUR TIME, FUCK THE DICE LEVELS MAN!!! AND THE LABYRINTH FOREST ONES TOO!!!

After DMC3 I was so hyped for playing this, I was finally going to see who the fuck was that Nero guy from DMC5 so I can play that game with no problems, I really wanted to like and recomend this game because is still DMC, but I just can't, compared to DMC3 is worst in every aspect, it even has more loading screens than that game. As I said, this felt like a chore, and the last game that made me feel like that was fkng DMC2... I legit prefer to play that one over this, no joke, or the DmC failed reboot, that game is fucking awesome in terms of gameplay, while this one is absolute trash.

If you are like me and want to play every DMC game (I'm doing it in order, just one to go...) then obviously grab this one (ON SALE PLEASE) and play it, it's not the worst game ever made, but I can 100% guarantee you this: you will NOT have fun with this one.

2/10 Fuck this game, I don't wanna play it ever again.

PD: sry if my english is bad, also Kyrie has dat ass tho, had to be said.

Play it only if u want to complete the whole saga, because the 4th installment is as bad as the second.
Multiple characters are useless, u just replay the same 20 missions (10 considering that halfway into the game u u backtrack all the levels with another character).
Characters are forgettable, boring protagonist and female characters designed with hormones.

The time has come and so have I
I’ll laugh last ‘cause you came to die
The damage done the pain subsides
And I can see the fear clear when I look in your eye

I’ll never kneel and I’ll never rest
You can tear the heart from my chest
I’ll make you see what I do best
I’ll succeed as you breathe your very last breath

Now I know how the angel fell
I know the tale and I know it too well
I’ll make you wish you had a soul to sell
When I strike you down and send you straight to hell

My army comes from deep within
Beneath my soul and beneath my skin
As you are ending I’m about to begin
My strength is pain and I will never give in

I’ll tell you now I’m the one to survive
You’ll never break my fate or break my stride
I’ll have you choke on your own demise
I make the angels scream and the devil may cry

My honored brethren
My honored brethren

We come together
We come together

To unite as one
To unite as one

Against those that are damned
Against those that are damned

We show no mercy
We show no mercy

For we have none
For we have none

Our enemies shall fall
Our enemies shall fall

As we up rise
As we up rise

To claim our fate
To claim our fate

Now and forever
Now and forever

We'll be together
We'll be together

In love and hate
In love and hate

They will see
We'll fight until eternity
Come with me
We'll stand and fight together
Through our strength
We'll make a better day tomorrow
We shall never surrender
