Doki Doki Literature Club Plus is one of my all time favorite games!! I've played on every platform copy and 100% on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and lastly here on Steam!! I love the concept of this game being very cute but hides a very dark plot behind our lovable characters. No matter how many times I play DDLC, I will always get scared lol but that's the beauty of psychological horror games, and I truly recommend everyone to give this game a try!! Always remember, Just Monika

I will focus on the side and extra stories
Side stories: They are emotionally charged, life lessons and character depth are AWESOME
Extras: Extras are very creative, displaying secrets, music, special images and more
This version gave new life to Doki Doki.

I thought this was just meant to look like a VN but instead have some crazy twist. I didn’t research it enough because “go in blind” was the advice of those recommending it. At the very least GET THE FREE VERSION. Such a waste of $15.

It is a good game, even though I am not a weeb. Normally I wouldn't even touch visual novels genre, but I use this specific game as an instrument to learn languages. 4 years ago I learned english with the help of this game, literally from scatch I have acquired the basics of vocabulary and grammar, so it gave me a pretty good fundament to move on.

Now I came back to it after so many years to embark on a new journey with my japanese language studying, it is as good for reading practice as ever for me.

So it is a tad unstandard approach to playing a game but still, I loved it and I made use of it for a pretty good cause and despite the popular belief that games are complete waste of time, in my case it wasn't lol.

A game that starts off fluffy and sweet, turns dark quickly as the festival approaches, and turns genuinely unsettling in Act 2. Exceptional storytelling. Highly recommended.

Saved my life.

I was poor, bound to a wheelchair. Every day I broke my arms, and every night I suffered when my legs broke. There was no cure, no amount of painkillers that could help with the sadness. Until Natsuki.

I understand what those who basked in God's warmth felt - the banishing of the shadows, the freeing from the shackles, the warm embrace. With merely two words from Natsuki, I was a new man.

Today I can walk, I have two wifes and 32 kids. I live a good life in Morioh, and I am eternally grateful to Dan Salvato for saving me from my prison of flesh.

9/10 still needs more Natsuki content.

I enjoy it a lot because it adds a bit to the lore at times but some of it may not be canon, overall; it's a great game. Both DDLC+ and DDLC have changed my life for both the better and very few times for the worst. Thank you.

SPOILER FREE REVIEW:
Very interesting game with a lot of psychological elements that make it meta. Good for playing at least 3 times. After your last go, I recommend not resetting the game!

NOTE: Check your files and don't skip through dialogue in the 2nd/3rd act!

I'm typically not one for visual novels but this one came highly recommended so I checked it out and...

Games that fall into the same category as the likes lf yume nikki, LSD: dream emulator, even something like undertale or inscryption, they all have this certian quality to them. A deep understanding of how video games ARE, for all their little quirks and redundancies. Games you can play and laught along with as they point out these weird things we just kinda accept or gloss over in games. DDLC did that for me in a type of game i wasn't familliar with in a way that intrinsically made sense to me.

Just. Play this game. Maybe it's with a trigger warning guide pulled up, maybe it's with a walthrough cause you (like me) can't do a puzzle to save their life. Maybe you're just watching a playthrough of someone else because you want the ability to skip forwards if you need. However you end up doing it, just know that it is absolutely worth your time.

All skeletons in this game are obscured by anime girls. Skeleton rating: 2/10

Do not play this game unless you're truly ready for the impact it will have on you. (You'll never be ready for the impact though.)

DeMo

Cute game. Very charming and wholesome. You may think you don't like dating sim type visual novels, but you'd be wrong. You just don't know what you like because you've lived too sheltered and too simple a life. Complexity has deserted you and left you a barren hellscape of unoriginality. Your tastes are as deep as Blizzard is ethical. This is to say not at all. But you can be better. You can change that about your horribly painfully average self by accepting you know nothing. That you are nothing. You can change all that by playing this wonderfully wholesome and not at all traumatizing game. Why did I suddenly say traumatizing? Don't worry about it because this game isn't. I just said that. You don't seem to be a good reader either. But don't worry (he says again), this game isn't voice acted so you'll have to read. That may be difficult for you, but it's okay. The wholesomeness of this game and the companionship that these anime girls offer will dull the harsh reality that is your pointlessness.

Honestly I was expecting more on visuals in this paid version, like characters animated with Live2D or voice acting.
But at least we have something else in this game, like extra side stories, full HD graphics, more plots & secrets, console games release, etc.

itsGalaxy

Wow.

This game has definitely given me that itch for more official lore in the DDLC universe, and god has it done that well with it's side stories, playing through them reminds me of when I first played DDLC, when I had no idea what happened, that's what made me fell in love with DDLC, and it's what made me fall in love with it once again.

The approach they take with the side stories are also great, as they focus on how each character meets the other 3 club members, and it makes for some really interesting and elaborate story-telling. It tends to focus on the issues that the characters feel they have and it makes the story a whole lot more relatable, which in turn makes it more interesting.

The side stories aren't the only new addition though, as collecting images throughout the game is also in cluded. Stuff like concept art, promo material, and more makes this a must-buy for any fan of the original game.

This is probably the best game I've ever played, so, thank you Team Salvato and Serenity Forge for this once in a lifetime experience.

cybereal

The game already presents itself with more depth than the "cover" would imply with the references to horror "on the tin" but... and I don't want to spoil too much but let's just say that there's much more depth to the main story than even the "game" itself can contain.

The plus content surprised me by just how compelling it was despite actual visual novels, especially of the variety implied by the surface appearance of the game's art, etc., not being my forte... I really enjoyed it too.

This game is popular for good reason, it's worth exploring to 100%. I've actually 100% completed it twice, once on PS5 and once on Steam. I put it up there with games like Portal. I don't know how to better endorse it than that.

GlueBall
GlueBall

This game is a fantastic emotional roller coaster. When I was younger I only enjoyed games and literature that belonged to my favorite genres. They were fps, beat 'em up, strategy, role playing, and for literature fantasy, crime and comedy. I still enjoy and gravitate towards them and DDLC is neither of these. I am glad I was convinced to go beyond my usual type of games, because this game moved me. A lot. Nowadays I judge games and literaure on how emotional engaging they are, even if the emotions are sadness or anger. This game gave me an emotional response greater than any other game or book I have played or read. Therefore, I can't recommend it enough and you should at the very least try the free version.

Only a few hours in but ill be putting in 60+ just like the first or any mods i downloaded for this game. It is just too amazing and the amount of emotions I feel every time i play is to an un-explainable degree. Maybe poetry would be the only way to express? With connections and emotions youd build with these characters. The feelings you never knew you had? Maybe I am a bitttt obsessed with the game and characters but all is the same. Everything gives shivers and a strong impact on me. You just want them all to be happy in the end BUT of course it is way deeper than that. Too many words to write so here have this...
Every person is a book.
Every page is a lesson. an experience.
The books become too thick to ever fully read.
Stories get cut short.
the memory of what you experience though.
That lasts longer than anything.
From the good to the bad.
Every story has something.
Enjoy them while they last.

Don't ever get out of my head.

If you're looking at this game because you've heard hype about it then I'd recommend you play the free version first instead of buying this. I bought this without playing the free version and expected it to blow me away but honestly, it felt like a waste of 3 hours.

I don't get what the hype is about this game. There were a few moments that I felt like it was going to get really good but it just never happened. Overall though, it didn't wow me, unsettle me, disturb me, or leave me feeling that my life was altered - despite those being the phrases I've seen so much around this game.

It is the exact same as the free version, except with added side stories of the main characters. I wish they could have made more routes and endings to compensate for the price, but this feels more of a “pay if you wanna support the devs” sorta game cause theres no big changes made to make it worth $15 for older fans. You’re better off playing the original if you don’t wanna pay for this game because I guarantee its the same.

I've played for 13.5 hours and have gotten 100% Data Collection, something only 8% of the players have done. So here is my review, I will post my review for the original DDLC below this one.

So, the game is the original DDLC, but packs in some more content in extra stories along with a "hub" that serves to show you all the photos you can collect, along with music and emails that start coming in around the 50% data collection mark that give you some background on Monika.

There is a community guide that tells you how to achive 100% Data Collection for the Breakthrough achievement. I also highly reccomend using the Fandom Wiki for DDLC/DDLC+ since it will also tell you how to unlock certain photos. (It makes it easier that looking for how to get a specific picture instead of searching through everthing in the the 100% guide)
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2533088999

There are a few tiny, TINY things changed in the story from the original. Just some dialogue lines that remove any indication that the characters are under 18. It is nothing big. The original game is free if you are not sure about DDLC+ but the original game and more are included with DDLC+. I reccomend this game. Here is my review of the original below.

===ORIGINAL DDLC REVIEW===
This game is amazing, and I cannot review it without giving spoilers so once you think the game is finished, check back here. Oh, and if anyone tells you to reinstall the game, just verify the files through Steam.

Spoiler 1 (First End Screen)
Hopefully you know that the game does not end after Sayori's death. Click the garbled text where "New Game" was

Spoiler 2 (The [First] Real Ending / Bad Ending)
After it is just you and Monika and Monika has finished all her dialogue, go into the games files, and delete monika.chr in the characters folder. This will allow you to restart the game without her. Sayori will eventually thank you for deleting her, at which point the game ends and the credits roll. I believe this is the real ending.

Spoiler 3 (The Good Ending + Natsuki End Screen)
So yesterday I didn't cover all endings so after some research, I found there is a Good Ending or a 100% complete ending. In order to do this, it involves multiple saves. Each save, choose a character who's story you want. (So if you want Yuri, only write poems she likes and always choose her in the choice menus) Before you walk in on Sayori's death, save the game and then start a new one. (Skipping Dialogue, CTRL key, helps speed this up each playthrough) Finally, once you have done all of the Sayori, Natsuki, and Yuri stories before Sayori dies, then go ahead and continue the game as normal. There is also a 'secret' Natuski Ending/Death screen; after the game is 'glitched' write poems for her, it will show you a scene where she snaps her neck, but she doesn't die. Yuri's death is always the last one before it is you and Monika forever. After you delete Monika's .chr file and the game starts over, Sayori will thank you for spending time with everyone in the club. When the credits roll, the images are not deleted, and afterwards there is a special note for the player.

Spoiler 4 (Etc)
So once the game was officially done, credits sequence and everything, I verified the games files for a fresh restart. (The game will tell you to reinstall) I deleted Monika and Sayori (since she started acting like Monika) and when I opened the game I was just greeted by Sayori hanging.

Spoiler 5 (Not Really)
[DDLC+ is made in Unity, the original was make in RenPy] The game was made in Python, which I feel is very cool as a programmer who has dabbled in it. I thought Monika's os. commands to delete Natsuki and Yuri looked kinda like syntax from Python and I know it has the OS module. When you brows the games files you are even greeted by a .py file in the folder.

Very awesome game, and this might be my longest, and most serious review ever.

I love how many secrets there is in the game! I've had this game since it's came out and I just completed it full 100%! If you are thinking of buying this game, here are some tips!
-Don't be afraid to look things up, whatever helps you is fine!
-It's not just the original DDLC game there are some additional things to it.
-Make sure to look in every nook and cranny, don't try to miss anything.
-Auto mode can be life saver if you're trying to get certain achievements (along with auto clicker)
I would say it's definitely 100% worth the purchase!

I originally played DDLC before the Plus! version was released, and I had really enjoyed it. It was a game that had serious themes tackled in a way I had never seen before, which made it stay in my mind as one of my favorite games, not to mention that it was the only visual novel I had ever played. When I heard about Plus! releasing with extra content, I was immediately excited, but wasn't able to buy it until recently. I played through the main story in all different routes I could and got all achievements, making this game joins the ranks of one of the only games I have ever gotten all achievements on. This brings me to completing all the side stories, which is one of the achievements. The way the side stories were made was perfect. The way different topics are discussed makes them hit extremely close to home. There were more than a few times where I thought tears would fall, but just barely didn't because I was in a call with my friends, but I admit I did end up shedding a tear at some points. I believe that DDLC+ is easily worth the price and a beautiful game.

I will try to keep this review short and simple, so:

+ artwork ( characters, backround & scenery )
+ literature ( has actually some good stuff, and i'm not even into literature )
+ character personalities ( not much to say )
+ story/plot/twist ( it plays like a short anime that has some twists without revealing too much )
+ simple ( simple to play, simple to understand, simple made )
+ side stories ( in the PLUS version you get extra side stories that tell of how the girls met before You
come into play )
+ secrets ( has some nice eastereggs and secrets that may not always appear when playing
+ indie game ( this game was made with passion and with no need to please any shareholders or with stupid
mechanics to keep you in the game, the original version is even FREE
+free version available if one cannot afford or is sceptical

I highly suggest people to buy this version of the game, even if some reviews tell one to just go play the free version. People that enjoyed the game and have the ability, should support developers like that; in my opinion.

Really cute dating simulator with just enough extra content to merit the price tag. Choose between four different girls featuring various personality archetypes and explore the wholesome adventure through a high school literature club. The premise may seem simple, but there are just enough twists and turns to really shake up the average dating simulator formula.

I was expecting this to expand on the whole "romance visual novel" aspect, maybe a different game where monika was at aware she was in a game but had no power and we as the player could see how she copes with that fact and offer the ability to romance her and the other club mates (without being deleted from existence). Instead it offers the music, side backstories, art, and a few neat development notes, they're nice but overrall not interesting enough for me to pay 14 dollars for it since we get the main game for free. If this was a cheap DLC for the main game maybe 5-8 dollars, yeah i think i'd be worth it, or if it was bundled with the main game for 14 dollars. I only played 2 hours as to not jeopardize my steam refund chance too much but playing a bit and reading a few reviews had led me to this conclusion. although it may be overpriced I still believe it's an amazing game i recommend despite the fact you can get it for free.

Like the base game a lot, already left a review on it - but this was too similar and I'm a rather impatient person which is why I can only handle VNs when I'm in a certain mood, so this is fun and all, but I should also probably put more time into refinishing this to get the achievements even though I already completely finished the base game. RIP. Anyways, gg and you nerds should play it if you're interested.

Just fricking play it. Don't possy wossy out like your dad when your mom said she was a fricking ckck wanting to see him do it with other men and he left to go get milk and never return. Thanks. Oh and go check out my other review - you might like it :)

Nothing matters here

this review does not include the good parts of the original DDLC, because it's the same in terms of story

I like the original novel even with it's major issues (lack of choice for player and weird choices of main character to romance girls even if you didn't talk to them over the course of the game), but with this one... I am not so sure.
For starters, let's say that I really like the idea of side stories about how friendship came to be. We get to know the origin of the club as well as how girls overcome their own problems to get to know each other a little bit better. However, it only ruins everything. How? Well, it all has to do with the base game - it remained untouched. And as one other review correctly pointed out, making all those flashbacks about friendship only makes Monika look demonic, since she is so sincere from the moment she created a club, and yet still betrays everyone for her own benefit in the main novel. She makes friends, tries to be better, tries to care but kills them in the end anyway. It's just hard to believe in this character after that. Hard to believe that she's real. Monika is too insane to even be called a program that gained consciosness because she does nonsensical things, and -if that's not true- we still don't get to know her reasoning behind her actions. I hoped that DDLC Plus! expands and adds content inside of the original story, but no. And it's sad.
The stories itself are fine but... cringy? When you only start reading them they seem okay, but every one of them uses character's insecurities to drive the plot. These are teenage girls, they're awkward and shy, and they try to learn how to behave and read certain situations. Again, this is fine at the beginning, because we only got to know the characters, and on top of that you can relate to them a lot, because chances are you have been shy and awkward at least for some time in your life too. But when it's just the same formula applied over and over again though, it really starts to irritate me. It's just very boring to read. In my mind I had to turn on Dhar Mann voiceover to make it fun and enjoyable, because I get it! You read the situation wrong and gave wrong answer, said something that you shouldn't have said and now you are trying to make up for it. But you have shown this to me already! I get the point - it's important to talk about your feelings. And I appreciate this advice, it's cool. Just stop doing it over and over again and move onto some other subject. Please.
Also, This use of the caracter's flaw to create these small stories makes problems for the main game, because although it seems that every girl has come to realisation of what their problem is and they are trying to improve on it, in the main game they just forgot it! It's like it never happened in the first place.

And that brings me to the biggest problem I have with DDLC Plus. It's fake. You see, there is a feature in Plus, when you exit the novel, you are redirected to in-game Home Screen with different apps, one of which is email. And in one of emails you get there is a big reveal - Monika created a lot of versions of DDLC, a lot of "universes". As I understand it, side-stories are separate universe too. That's probably why original DDLC characters are disconnected from their stories in Plus, and that's why they don't remember how they fixed their relationships. And you know, I hate this trope. "It was all a dream". I hate this trope, because it takes away meaning from the story. Why events matter if they are fake anyway? Anything can be said and done, it doesn't matter. There is no meaning in the end because it's not the same universe and it never happened in whatever we are reading after that. It already was a big issue with core DDLC, where player's choices have no value because in the end we come to the same conclusion, but here it's worse - you can't even believe anything in the side-stories. Because this friendship is fake too, it has nothing to do with the original novel, and this point has a proof because developers directly gave it to us.

After this I just have no desire whatsoever to continue. I wish there would be a lot more inside of the main visual novel, like more choices, more meaningful conversations, but nothing changed there. In original DDLC we never get to know why Monika is the way she is, and I mean as character, as human being. Why she does what she does from the perspective of someone with feelings and mind. I believe that even if we don't get all the answers, we at least deserve to know her as someone more than crazy program. With DDLC Plus I have no idea if it is worth it to continue, because I might never find it out. Maybe I will get an email about that, but it's not a good way of storytelling. I want to hear it from Monika herself. To hear what feelings this character wants to share. The original novel is good exactly because of that - through their poems we actually get to know girls as people, as well as through their critique of each other. It is still a decent story, but what a shame it has to be this way forever.

This game is great, but I recommend you play the original DDLC for free before you consider buying this.

If you're wondering why I have so much time on the game, it's because of the music player. It racks up time when I let it play in the background.
...okay, so I may also have played through the main game & side stories a couple times. Sue me.

I do have a few small criticisms, though:
1) You can only save one playlist at a time. Not the end of the world, but it would be nice to have more than one playlist so I don't have to change it regularly.
2) You can't put desktop shortcuts. Even if it was just little things, like the DDLC VM or music player, it would really sell the immersion.
3) I am honestly fine that they didn't add any horror content, but the advertising suggests that there is. So my last criticism is really with the advertising, not the game itself.

If you like Doki Doki or just psychological horror this is absolutely worth the buy. It gives the OG Doki Doki experience with an easier way to mess with the files and see whats different, not only that but it adds new stories being before the literature club events took place so it gives a lot more depth to the characters and I really like how they keep it seperate from the main game. It also adds more dialogue to the main game and different animations which look cleaner. I really hope the creators do more with this as this is my all time favorite horror game. If you wanna find a way to play with your friends try doing the character voices and its really fun. P.S can't wait for the Sayori Nenroid because I really wanna voice her in real life!

As an avid fan of the original, there was no way I could pass on the Plus version. DDLC has been a favourite from the start. The Side Stories here are endearing (if you need a moment of that, and you may find you do). Plus also offers additional images, music, as well as various egg hunting and Steam achievements (as an aside, I'd found the BT achievement impossible without a guide, but there are a few great ones listed here). It's nice to have these extra features, so I'd certainly recommend DDLC Plus for all its additions. However, nothing compares to the juxtapostion of adorable + horrific which is the original game..included within, of course, and well worth the price all on its own. You can still get the base, only, but I truly think Plus is worth your while and worth the cost. Admittedly, I always break down sobbing at certain points in the original game, but it is what it is, and I love it for all that it is...a must play. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ 10/10

This game, This game is like one of my favorite games of all time. I love it so frickin' much and I feel like it deserves a full review. So strap in folks, this ones a looooooooong one.

Act 1: A regular dating sim ;)

The game starts with an age check, basically warning you that there is some wacky sensitive stuff in this game and that you should be at least 13 years of age before playing. I, like many other DDLC first timers, decided to ignore this screen and get straight into the game (BIG MISTAKE). I got to the title screen, named my character after myself and started playing. Act 1 of the game serves as the "meet all the characters" scene, It introduces you to Sayori, Yuri, Natsuki, and of course Monika. Sayori is the first one you meet and basically the only girl your character has talked to since meeting her. She's your childhood friend type character who's always trying to put a smile on everyone's faces (even when she doesn't smile back). She's also the one who (semi-forcefully) indoctrinates you into the literature club, which is where you meet the other characters. Monika is the pretty, popular, perfect club president whom which you and your character have spoken once with. Yuri is a shy bookworm who makes tea and has a......thing with knives. And Natsuki (best girl) is a tsundere with a passion for both manga and baking.
After you join the club, Monika assigns you all to write a poem and this is the way you determine which path you'll be taking and which girl you'll be dating over the course of the game. You write poems by clicking words on the right side of the screen. On the left there are three chibi sprites of Sayori, Yuri and Natsuki. Picking certain words will make certain sprites jump which determines who your poem will be for. For example let's say I was writng a poem for Natsuki, I would pick words that she would like like Anime, Cute, or Strawberry. And if I was writing a poem for Yuri then I would pick words like Climax, Horror, or Secretive. No two girls like the same word, so while Sayori likes the word daydream while Yuri and Natsuki don't. So try to make your poems as in line with your best girl's best words as possible.
Every club meeting after the first follows the exact same pattern, You show up and (sometimes) wait for everyone else to arrive, once everyone else arrives you spend some time getting to know the girl you wrote your poem for, Monika interrupts you just as you feel like your really getting somewhere with your chosen girl with her "Catchphrase" "Okay everyone!, you show the club your poem, they show you theirs, and finally (after some last bits of dialog) you walk home with Sayori. They all follow this formula up until about the fourth meeting where it's still the same formula, there's just a slight difference in your best buddy Sayori. Turns out she has crippling depression and she only reveals this to you after the meeting. And it's been really bad lately but she won't say why. You don't even get the chance to see the poem she wrote before she tells you the she's leaving early. When Monika says her "iconic" line, it changes to "Okay you three!" Which prompts both Natsuki AND Yuri to call okay everyone her "catchphrase."
This meeting takes place two days before the school festival, the event that the club has been talking about for basically the whole game. Each member of the club will be doing something for the festival to help bring in new members, Monika and Sayori will be making flyers, Yuri will be in charge of decorations for the club room, and Natsuki will be baking cupcakes (cuz WHY NOT!). You have the option to help either Natsuki or Yuri since Monika and Sayori are already helping each other. Both scenes serve as the "date" scene with your preferred girl, and they both end with the exact same cutscene. At the end of the "date" the girl you chose gives you their confession but they don't actually get to finish because SURPRISE Sayori is also here for some reason. She comes up outta nowhere to interrupt your preferred girl's confession with her own. After she finishes confessing her love to you you have two options, accept her love, or decline it and friend zone her. Both choices result in the same outcome.
It's the day of the festival and boy you sure are ready for it. Sayori isn't outside which is odd, and you debate weather or not you should wake her up. But you ultimatley decide not to as it feels a little weird to do so. But as soon as you arrive in the club room and are greeted by Monika, you immediatley change your mind and sprint back to Sayori's house only to find............ She's dead. She hung herself after the events of yesterday. All of her depression coupled with what you said to her yesterday were too much for her to handle, and so she took her own life via noose. This fills your character with unrelenting grief, Sayori was and always has been your best friend and now...she's just gone.

Act 2: Anything BUT a regular dating sim

Act two begins with the game being reset and you being brought back to the title screen. The game progresses as if nothing just happened except for the fact that Sayori isn't here. Yep sorry Sayori fans but in act 2 she straight up just doesn't exist and that's a bad thing. Because it's only after you realize that Sayori is actually gone for reasies that everything starts to go to sh1t. Natsuki becomes a bit meaner than usual, Monika starts glitching the game, and Yuri hooooooooooooooooooooooooo boy does Yuri change and not in a good way. Yuri becomes this absolute mad woman and is extremely obsessive over you. She's basically just a yandere but with out the murdering people. Besides these changes, the game is relatively the same. It still has the same formula, it still has you make a bunch of decisions that effect the game, it still has Monika's "catchphrase", and it ends with someone dying. Yeah spoiler alert but Yuri also kills herself, this time with a knife. This doesn't fill your character with any grief whatsoever but it does fill Natsuki with the urge to vomit upon seeing the body. But then when Monika enters the room, she acts like everything is fine. Which to her, it is.

Act 3: Just Monika

Surprise, Monika's actually the one behind all this stuff. Monika actually has complete access to the game's code and is able to alter it to whatever she likes which is why she doesn't act like a normal person upon seeing Yuri's dead body. It's because she caused it, she made Yuri stab herself, she made Sayori hang herself, she made Natsuki snap her own neck. She caused all of this for one reason, she loves you. Not you as in the character you play as, but you as in the human playing the game. She is actually the yandere of this game, forget Yuri, Monika's really the crazy one.
Act 3 consists of one location, the club room in space. The only thing you do here is talk to Monika, it's the only thing you CAN do. You can't write poems, you can't speak with any of the other girls, you can't do anything other than speak with Monika. You think this is where the game should end, but it doesn't. It doesn't stop here because there actually IS a way to make everything normal again. During your first conversation with Monika she tells you how she deleted the other girls. All you have to do is do exactly what she did and delete her. But what if you don't want to, well you don't have to. The game stays like this, and your "progress" is automatically saved so you could just keep you game like this. But let's take a look at what would happen if you did delete Monika.

Act 4: Back to normal?

Have not played a better game. The plus experience is wonderful, it adds tons of bonus content which gives souls to the characters. It adds plenty of things to feel good about after finishing the game. The side stories were a huge expansion much needed for players who get connected to the characters. Finishing them has left me in awe. I've always wanted to see more, but it amazed me how much more you get. I've played the core game over and over again and plus puts my mind and soul at rest. Really worth the buck, best VN out there. Definitely not disappointing.

Keep in mind this is coming from someone who has played the core game, so there's bias lol

Nevertheless, a must play

HushedAnomaly
HushedAnomaly

I came to this game having seen it through other content creators that played the original. I figured it was long enough ago that I could still have some fun with it and hopped in with the release of DDLC+. It met the bar and went beyond. It's a cleverly crafted horror game hidden underneath a cute facade, with the new element of side stories adding even more depth to the characters in an allegorical non-horror environment - which is to say that it's wholesome and offers critical thinking points anyone can learn from.

This game has something for visual novel, horror, puzzle, theory, and even music fans. The soundtrack is great, especially that of the side stories, and the story can be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be. Speaking of that, there are additional elements outside of just playing DDLC that offer stuff to do even after base completion, keeping the game feeling new. Although it gets repetitive towards the end when you're going for 100% completion, that's to be expected when some of these secrets are tied to running segments or doing tasks multiple times. Even then, I didn't find myself getting worked up about it since my curiosity drove me to obtaining 100% completion - and most of these secrets were obtained on my way to the others.

Overall, a stellar game that I hope others can enjoy as well.

Absolutely recommend even if you played the original game. There is at least 3 hours of prequel story added that will tear your heart out, and with the in-game desktop you can play music, find art for the game by playing, and play new and old music! I've been having a blast playing even though I already know the main story, there's something special about doing it yourself instead of watching a rich shmuck you like read it to you.

So I don't normally care for visual novels or story driven games. However, I do love games like pony island and inscryption which subvert the very idea of player agency and interaction. This is one of those games and I loved it. It deals with some very dark, disturbing themes about mental health so beware, but if you like games that subvert the medium itself, then this is highly recommended.

This game is very much worth it, and adds ample amounts of content through side stories and such. The base game alone is more then worth it if you have never seen the game and don't know any spoilers. Honestly one of my favorite stories in a game (and even knowing where most of the "interesting" parts of the game were, I was still really freaked out).

An uplifting tale of friendship, avidity and the power of love. Highly recommended for people looking to unwind. Dispensing with the humour; this is a potent and horrifying experience. It wields the unique style of video game horror in a similar vein to Undertale and Buddy Simulator 1984. Don't let the vibrant exterior fool you, it conceals the twisted heart of a monster.

Versed in fear.

Fist I love playing VNs and games with dark twists.
While the art and music are absolutely nice, the story leaves so much to be desired.
There wasn't enough build up to justify girls' personality changes and the plot twists later on for me.
Then It felt like twists just being this way in the sake of being this way, nothing more. I wish later monologues of a certain character would be more meaningful.

I absolutely loved the later glitchy bit where I tempted and clicked the "Skip" button. It felt creative.

Spiral Bright
Spiral Bright

TLDR; Not recommended due to lack of anxiety warning before purchasing and only way to know the REAL warnings is to start up the game or play the free version. People with anxiety in any form should most definitely stay away from the game; people with depression are advised to not play this game. It's probably an okay game, but this game will make you very uncomfortable and make existing mental conditions worse.

This is a game I wanted to like as I was aware of the darker themes but I wasn't aware of other aspects of the game that make the game hard to enjoy. Without spoiling much, there are times that will happen increase in frequency concerning the content, and for people with anxiety--of any kind, even if you aren't clinically diagnosed--it will trigger you hard and make the game unbeatable. I'm not a horror gamer but I am into dark themes, but the execution of the game is the issue when it comes to anxiety, and I almost had a panic attack with my anxiety running wild. This is coming from someone that isn't clinically diagnosed with an anxiety disorder but with anxiety issues stemming from other mental conditions.

One critique about the game though is that it is actually linear despite your choices, you just get to pick which girl you can see first. Based on the warnings about mental health, it's a terrible way to present mental health to people, albeit a very realistic demonstration, who suffer from certain mental conditions or challenges. I understand the story is wanting to be told a certain way but there are not enough warnings before buying and paying for the game to warn you about the mismanagement and poor way of how mental health is handled. The representation hurts everyone, but I admit it has merit in potentially getting people to talk about mental health more openly. It's just a real shame there is no real agency to full understand how actions have consequences, which ironically would make the game 10x worse.

If you're not faint of heart (do read the wą̸̜̼̀͗́̃̏̈́̚̕rnings and take them seriously before buying it) and have the time to dedicate to it you're in for an experience! It can get a little dull ą̸̜̼̀͗́̃̏̈́̚̕t times but stick with it. The more you play the more it unfolds. There is a point that may make you wą̸̜̼̀͗́̃̏̈́̚̕nt to stop, stick with it and power through.

Achievements - Iṫ̶̴̵̮̌͜ takes a fair bit of tim̵̷̸̧͇̜̌̌̍͂e to get through the achievements. M̴̼̓̄y advice is to start using the skip function ǫ̵̛͔̜̈́̊nce you feel you've experienced the bulk of the main story, just make sure you don't let iṫ̶̴̵̮̌͜ skip new text. Hunting the achievem̵̷̸̧͇̜̌̌̍͂ents ą̸̜̼̀͗́̃̏̈́̚̕ctually helped give me closure on the gä̸̼͖́m̵̷̸̧͇̜̌̌̍͂e so once you've completed it I recommend working through them to expand on the story.

Visual Novels

Definitely not my genre.
I'm not used to playing them because they're very verbose, which I don't like very much.

Still, Doki Doki managed to interest me years ago. I've played the free version when it first came out and I remember it being an instant hit. Everyone played it and talked about its suddenness and heavy topics. And while I've changed my mind on its various aspects, the concept behind still stands out.

Deceiving stereotypes

The actual premise is not so different from the various visual novels out there. You're a random guy whose purpose is to fall in love with every moving human who stands in your way.

What Doki Doki did well was the buildup. Every character is extremely stereotyped, and you'll instantly figure out which character does what. It's how the story evolves that's unexpected, because you think you've got it all figured out and then it knocks you down.

Ultimately, I can't say much about what happens. You'll have to see for yourself.

What's new

This "plus" version presents with a revamped UI and a new layer of plot hidden in some of the virtual desktop's files.
I've appreciated the addition, as it renders everything more homogeneous and pleasant to the eye.

Side stories have been added, further exploring characters from this universe. I must say though that the stories themselves are average at best. They're not bad, they're simply... visual novels. Without anything else going on. I can understand where the developer is coming from: not everything must be negative, but it definitely shifts away from the game's original concept.

It's fine nonetheless.

Everything else

Soundtrack is fine. I like the compositions, although they can get a bit repetitive sometimes (particularly during long dialogue sessions).
UI is also simple but effective, so nothing to say there.

What's left

Ultimately, Doki Doki is still a valid game, but the addition of the side stories to me made it less unique. If you're new, you'll be surprised and, at times, disgusted by its content. This game was intended to evoke strong feelings, and the original version sure did.

Side stories may be interesting but they're average at best, shifting off the game's main overall theme.

With that said, you should consider buying the Plus version to support Team Salvato.
The original game has had too much effort put into it to be free.

This game is honestly a masterpiece. Obviously, if you're disturbed easily consider the aspects of this game before playing. If you don't know if you're ready for the game maybe try listening to your own music while playing or skipping dialogue! I personally think reading the dialogue is worth it though. The characters are all unique and are reflections of different types of people. I enjoyed relating to these characters, and learning more about perspectives. Anyway, this is a great psychological horror game

I personally love this game. At first, I wasn't so convinced of playing the game, because I used to think that DDLC was just a generic "horror visual novel" but when I played it for first time... I can say without exaggering that this game changed a lot of things in my personal life, but the thing that made me write this is Monika. I know that sounds like a weeb thing, but I am being serious. Monika made me realize that all of the overexaggerated characters stereotypes exist because the people just want to be in a safe/better place than the actual reality, but the way Monika talks to you, the way she loves you is something that feels real; she doesn't love the "main character", she loves you. I really apreciate the job that Dan put in this game, it's just wonderful. I love Monika and I would definitly recommend this game. Thank you.

I'm a bit of a cheapskate, so I rarely ever buy games for full price, but I bought this while it was on sale and can confidently say that this is one of the first games in a LONG time that I would have gladly have paid full price for. The main story is mostly the same as its free predecessor, but the side stories make up for that by a mile. They're seriously just great, but I won't say any more to avoid spoilers. Definitely worth a shot, even if you are on the fence about visual novels.
