I remember when this game was first up for play-test and i loved it then now that its fully out, i still love it. the games constant feeling of an uphill battle makes it very fun and iv'e always loved a game with a high difficulty.

This game has a lot going for it, but it's missing the elements that make it feel rewarding to spec into a certain build path. Every path toward the end feels like you are just moments away from everything falling apart, and no matter how much of an advantage you have in the beginning or how many resources you have, it will always end up that way. For base-building, that's not how I like to play.

It's just missing the magic for me. Hopefully as it matures it grows and adds more build paths, content, etc.

Excellent game. Satisfying game loop, well balanced, you always feel pressure to upgrade stuff for the phase you're currently in. The modifiers give you enough control to keep it interesting. Good atmospheric soundtrack and design, cool backgrounds.

It's deceptively simple, but hours and hours worth of replayability.

Deadlock
Deadlock

+ First few hours are fun while you're still making progress.
- Later missions become a repetitive chore
- Upgrades are too situational / too little value for their cost.

It's hard to figure out which upgrades are worth the cost (and resources are scarce), so buying the "wrong" one can ruin your run.

Overall there's not enough variation in gameplay, because upgrades are too hard to acquire.

fun, engaging, responsive rogue-lite. like an RTS where the macro and micro components are split into separate phases of play. a delightful optimization vignette.

if you like this kind of game (and you'll know pretty quickly by reading the description and watching some gameplay), then it's a no brainer. buy.

Schmarsten

Not really worth the price. The mining aspect is really fun but the fighting/defending aspect feels more like a chore tbh

It's also lacking content and unlocks.

Good game, Compelling concept with some decent replay value.

It would be awesome to play multiplayer co-op

Oddly addictive, this game is a great little time sink.

There is depth to the various mechanics and strategies, and a little bit of random chance thrown in due to the placement of resources which you may or may not find. On top of that, the constant time pressure makes it engaging, if a little bit repetitive, but can be mixed up with the various difficulty levels and modifiers.

Overall a nice little 2D game that I've enjoyed playing.

(There is a bug at the time of writing which means the laser sound plays even when not in use)

This is a pretty fun game. The idea of mining in a time limit and then trying to use your materials effectively is hard. I can not wait to see what other items / event the creators add to the game. Very good start. The end battles are really hard to finish.

Dome Keeper has been a favourite right from the start... before it was even called Dome Keeper, the demo won me over. if you enjoy a good treasure hunting/monster fighting/skill upgrading rogue like, then this one's for you. i am also a fan of 8/16 bit graphics which endeared me further. Thanks guys, for making a great game! I look forward to the further developments!

Good game for zoning out. It's a surprisingly relaxing experience.
I'm not sure how much content there is yet, but it seems a little light.

Level12Boss
Level12Boss

Crisp gameplay loop concepts and good controls, but overall the game at this stage is a skin deep experience that's too tightly controlled. The mines get bigger but the game stays the same. More arcade action underground (a la Solar Jetman) and a lot more fun tricks for dome defence (a la Scorched Earth) and this game would really be cooking.

(I've watched gameplay for many hours on top of my playtime)

What's good about the game:

For a strategy roguelike, the game feels incredibly well-balanced. It still needs a few tweaks here and there, but there's not a single path to success; and often, you have to adapt to your specific situation. Some paths are better than others, obviously, but knowing what to get and why is part of the mastery of the game. The fact that so many people online love the Lift gadget and so many others think it's dog water speaks volumes in terms of the great job the team has done with the branching upgrade path.
The core gameplay, while repetitive, is super engaging thanks to one CRUCIAL design aspect which is also perfectly implemented: The rock's density. The randomly generated substrate messes with any standardised mining strategy out there, so you are forced to adjust to your environment every time. It stays fresh for way longer than you'd expect.

The core aspects of the game are put together very elegantly and I believe the team has a great sense of proper game balance and what makes for a fun experience.

What's not so great: The controls for keyboard. They definitely fall a little short and, at the time of writing this review the key-bindings don't work properly. The controls can feel a little confusing sometimes, but that would be solved by having key-bindings work in the first place. The tool-tips show for a brief interval, which is long enough to read, but sometimes you'd want to pull it back up for just a second to really think about what the new stuff does instead of being forced to fidget with the new mechanic because you don't want to look it up online. Other than that, the UI could use a bit of work, but that is a very minor detail.

The game still has some issues with its controls for keyboard users and some very minor UI quirks that, if solved, could really help out newer players get into the game. All of this could be easily attributed to the game still being in its early stages after launch and I truly believe this will be an exceptional product once fully polished.

The game is a great purchase even right now; by far the best roguelike released in 2022 and it still has a lot of room to grow. Get it while it's fresh out of the oven.

8/10 over all, 9.5/10 if you have a controller (or after a bit when the key-bindings work again).

I REALLY DIG IT

On serious note - really well designed relaxing gameplay loop and it's really aesthetically pleasing. Oh, and the game is super satisfying to play. Strongly recommending that one to anyone that has a slight kink for cleaning and keeping things tidy, hits the spot super hard.

Only thing bothering me is that you can’t save a run in progress, and one can even on higher levels with bigger maps if you play like me, digging every last piece of dirt sometimes can take even more than two hours. Would be nice to have the ability to save your progress during the run.

optimumspice8
optimumspice8

not as slow as i expected when first seeing the game, lots of fun. Unlocking all the new ways to play the game is great as well, but as i play this more i realize there is not a lot of variety in runs, you pretty much have the same progression every run unless you use different domes or shields.

jeddybear__1

I watched some early access and was hooked! It reminded me of space invaders, but you're the invader and there's upgrades. The game play is difficult no matter what, however it is not so difficult that it is exhausting to play. 10/10 worf da muney

Still suffers from UI issues. This game has its fun moments but there are too many frustrations.
- The button for "give instruction" (e.g. to a pet) and "pick it up" are the same, so it's very easy to accidentally start carrying something around when you wanted to instruct it, or vice versa. (Teleporter, Drillbert)
- Stun Laser bug would make it try to go under dome; that's fixed now but Shield Overcharge upgrade just fails to do anything now. That sinks a top-difficulty run.
- Teleporter UI is very unclear with transport-resources upgrade - is it teleporting them or just sitting there? It appears to just sit there a lot.
- Also no way to pick up or drop specific resources you need

Until there are some upgrades to the above I wouldn't recommend picking this up. In the future I can imagine it being much more consistently fun.

Pvnch

I only purchased this game yesterday and it has already consumed over 9 hours of my life, and I do not regret a single moment. It's a simple concept, but complex enough to keep you entertained for hours, the replay value is very good as there are lots of different ways to combine skills and play.
The art style is gorgeous and the soundtrack is so, so good.

As a minor quibble, I wish there were more variations in dome and defence, gadgets and perhaps another game mode, but tbh even if the game never got updated again I wouldn't feel as though I hadn't had my moneys worth.

Praise Drillbert.

Sweet tits, this game is fun and addictive. I make film props as a hobby, and when I'm waiting for paint to dry, I play Dome Keeper.

Argonius

This is an example of a game where care and thought are invested into every part. The loop of dig, defend, dig, defend is really fun and fast paced. I feel like the upgrades are really well balanced and interact in satisfying ways. Gameplay is usually the most important thing to me when evaluating games, but the music and pixel art are fantastic as well.

Some have said that there's not enough content to justify the price. However, I think there's decent value here for a game less than $20 that will only improve in value if the developers continue updating the game with more content as they have planned.

AQINYOURFACE
AQINYOURFACE

In the beginning I really like the game but, as I continued playing it I started noticing little by little. That the games AI, started making it punishing to play if started going deeper or if I was carrying more than I was supposed to be carrying the timer will go Down even faster, if I used the teleporter in the game it would take off like 4 or 5 second for no reasons. THE WANT YOU, to play how they want! You see this in every game where instead of making a challenging for the player they make it punishing and call that fun!

JUSTICE
JUSTICE

Until more content is added, it's a brilliant $9.99 game.
I purchased for $18 wanting to support an indie title and hoping that more content would be added. It looks like more content is being added, that's great! Some story elements, lore, secrets, would go a long way, some long-term unlocks (similar to FTL) would be much appreciated. At the moment it is a grind as soon as the unlocks stop, with most runs feeling extremely samey. The best rogue-likes have elements that synergize and make you play or change your play in drastically different ways, and usually make you feel powerful when you're smart. In this so far the variations are small but a few more imaginative branching techs would push it over the edge into greatness I think. I'll keep checking back and will change my review if they can follow through on their promises to add content.

terrormachine

!THIS GAME IS EARLY ACCESS!

There is simply not enough to do. This game needs at least 2-3 more "classes" and MUCH more content in the form of gadgets and other stuff before it is worth your money at 17.99. The concept is good. The art is good. The gameplay loop is good. Buuuuut I feel pretty dumb for having spent 20 bucks on it at this stage.

The developers need to seriously rethink the pricing of this game when you can go buy stuff like Vampire Survivors for like 4 dollars. Total rip off.

Besides the weird naming scheme for the difficulties, I really do enjoy this game!
Maybe add an infinite game mode? Infinite Map, Endless upgradable dome, shield, laser/sword, etc. ?

deadmaninschool
deadmaninschool

This game is a fun mix of rogue-like elements and tower defense. I really enjoy the game play where exploring and looking for resources can help upgrade my base and face stronger and stronger waves of enemies. I was hooked when I played the initial demo and spent hours trying to beat the demo and reach the bottom. The game's graphics and mechanics look much more polished now. My only caveat is that the difficulty curve is a bit steep if you are playing the first time. On the larger maps it might be easy to get lost and then lose because you were late to defend the wave. Once you get a hang of it, this game is really fun. I am looking forward to seeing how the developer expands the meta progression! I can't wait to try out the new sword dome and the additional content the full game has.

ani.for.prez
ani.for.prez

I don't agree with all the reviews saying "you've seen all there is within a couple of hours". You don't even unlock most of the gadget upgrade trees in the first couple of hours let alone discover all the synergies between the relics. You definitely don't get to see all the monsters in one run since they mix and match the variety

But there's still tons the devs could, and do plan to, add to the game to improve variety. Sometimes RNG with the relics can screw you over hard and not give you stuff that works together at all but most relics have functions that help you out greatly once they're upgraded. I'm also looking forward to more characters being added because while the single drill character is fun, the planned one sounds even better. I really hope they support the game for a good while cause there's a really good framework for a lot of variety in upgrades, monsters, characters and cosmetics

But the game is still fun enough and addictive in that you always want to try one more round and push your limits. I found my limit soon enough but I'm hoping I can unlock more upgrades to win some more rounds

Core gameplay loop is about as good and streamlined as it gets. Really solid concept that is well-executed.

My only real criticism of this game is that I'd like more gadgets, domes, and characters. For those on the fence, you may feel the game is a bit content-light. I can understand this criticism, but the foundation here is solid enough that I'm happy to support the devs.

Very much looking forward to future content. I've rarely had a "weekend game" I enjoyed this much.

Ponyway

Pricing:
Buy it from sale. At 10-12 euros/dollars it's worth the price.

Premise:
Terraria meets tower defense.

Graphics:
It's pixels. There are good and bad pixel art and this is the latter. If it wasn't for the 'cover art', I wouldn't even know it's a spaceman I'm controlling. I think it's mainly due the lack of shading.

Cons:
70% of the game is "coming soon", meaning it's early access game released as full access game... With the price to match. Map sizes are disabled until you "beat" the game mode with the smallest map. There is no reason for this, just another hurdle to make gamers' life more difficult and a way for the developer to hide the fact that the game is woefully unfinished. There are supposed to be more game modes and characters but you're stuck with one of each because they're not in the game yet.

The gameplay is split between defense and mining. This would be all well and dandy, but the amount of time you spend mining is awfully low. The instant you get into "mining mode", it's cut short by attacking invaders. Also, why is this tagged as roguelike? While technically fitting the term, it'd mean both Terraria and Minecraft are 'roguelikes'.

Pros:
Upgrade paths in the game are well thought out. There isn't a single bad upgrade in my opinion. There are no bugs that I can see and the music is chill.

Overall:
If this game was early access like it should be, with lower price tag I'd give it a pass. However, since the developer seems to think this is full game, then I shall review it as such. And my recommendation is not to buy this game. It is clearly unfinished, unpolished, overpriced, non-roguelike and there are many more better games to spend your money on.

Great combination of base defense and mining. I appreciate the simplicity of the resource types, and the lack of railroading in the research paths.

It ticks everything you want in a huge time sink of a game. It has a leaderboard, fulfilling mode that's not on the leaderboard, satisfying mining, upgrade tree that's easy to assess, and every run is different.

$5 dollar mobile game. I could see this just from the looks of it and bought it any way. I'll take ownership for being stupid in buying it, the dev should (but won't) take ownership for making a game with little content.

Nice artstyle, pretty good music, but the gameplay is repetitive and dissatisfying. Feels like a flash game I would have played in homeroom in highschool but with an actual budget behind it. Tower defence and mining resources, keeps me happy throughout the game loop - I've completed it several times now, but I'm hoping that ongoing support means more permutations etc. to extend playtime - even without those, a solid recommend.

Would suggest playing the demo and leaving it at that - Full game provides very little in addition.

Great gameplay, music, progression, and feel. I can see this getting better and better with more content added in future updates. I especially love how the music doesn't play all of the time. Adding a cave-like echo effect for underground activities would be neat...

I can also see this feeling too repetitive when played for the hundredth time...

Way overpriced for what you get, considering how many sss tier games of this caliber that you can find for less than $5, but still very good. Its a bit faster paced than I had had expected/hoped for but is still a joy to play, I cant wait to see what else is in store for this gem.

This game has a fantastic loop, the aesthetics are spot on. Music, visuals and upgrade trees make me want to play this over and over. The only real issue is the lack of content. After playing for 6 hours it feels like i've unlocked just about everything. With a a few more relic upgrades and characters to play this game can be something fantastic. Nevertheless it was worth the price.

If you liked Motherload back in the flash game days, you'll probably like this. Takes that idea, gives it a combat mechanic, and turns it into a tense, fun, and so far quite replayable roguelike kinda game.

KnightJvor

Definitely a fun game and worth the price. Just finally beat relic mode on Brutal with a medium map after 8-10 tries. I think some of best parts is that it's not overly complicated, and the game just lets you figure things out for yourself. Very satisfying gameplay. I kind of wish there was more content, but that will come with time from what I'm seeing. It would definitely supply you with at the very least a day or 2 of fun.

Dima3K
Dima3K

Dome Keeper is a unique take on roguelike, survival, base building and mining at the same time. The beautiful 3D like graphics are complimented excellently by the unique visuals (including different color patterns for all worlds) & the fittingly relaxing though at times tense soundtrack, both of which make for a world-design delicacy. The gameplay loop is easy to grasp yet tough to master, requiring you to decide for each run depending on multiple factors what your approach to the run will be in order to secure the relic or get a high score. This becomes even tougher when you have to account for the fact that you don't actually know what you're going to have in terms of resources, especially in the long term.

Overall, this game is absolutely brand new and the only concern I see with it is the amount of content. What I will say is this; As someone who's played hundreds of hours on other roguelikes, I beat through Relic Hunt mode (The main mode) on all map sizes in 10 hours. Currently I'm heavily in love with this game and I think the devs have a great vision for it, with a lot of potential for expanding the gameplay. Despite the 20$ price tag, I fully recommend this game if you can wait for more content or don't mind repeating the game (Just remember what Hades was like when it launched).

On a last note, I'm currently one of the few people writing the FANDOM page for the game (which I can't link for obvious reasons). If you need information on the game, don't hesitate to comment on this review, on the FANDOM page or just simply add me. It would also be great if other experienced players helped out on the wiki, this game has quite the depth to it and we can help new players learn.

TL:DR; Buy even at full price, an indie gem.

The game is fun and gets really addicting great music and I love the mining aspect of it. However I'm listing this game as not recommended because of a few things...
The amount of content in this game does not justify an 18$ price point it should be 9.99 max. I mean there are only 2 different dome weapons and there is only one character class. This game really feels like it should have been first listed as early access.
If more content comes out I'll likely change this review but for now I can't justify the price.

It's a decent rogue-lite miner. You mine for resources, balance upgrades between more efficient resource gathering and being able to defend the base every so often. Presentation is nice and gameplay loop is pretty self explanatory.

I did find the game becoming pretty repetitive after 4 hrs or so, so I am just getting a few more achievements before calling it quits.

I do not regret buying it, but for a game of this genre it has fairly small amount of content. The runs do feel sorta samey and unlocking new stuff is very few and far between, this could have been done better imho. Still, overall a fairly good game.

Gatlink

I haven't played a game this addicting for a long while now. Dome Keeper is as simple as it is smooth, and it has the right amount of content to keep you entertained for a long time (I'm 50 hours in and I have not yet tried the second game mode.) Difficulty might seem tough at first, but for me it was just enough to make me struggle every time I managed to win a run and cranked it up a notch, but not to the point that I would get frustrated. Every time I found something I though was useless, I tried it a bit and discovered a way to make it work, which was like a new way to play the game.

Definitely in my goty list!

Blatant Panda
Blatant Panda

A beautiful game that is hampered by bugs and poor difficulty scaling, as well as horrible RNG. The art style and soundtrack are outstanding and that makes this game even more of a disappointment because the balancing is awful and it drags the whole game down with it. I don't particularly enjoy getting 20 minutes into a prestige run without finding a single piece of cobalt which is crucial for survival, then getting hit by a ridiculous wave of enemies 3 times the size of the previous wave right after taking an upgrade back to my dome, even if the upgrade isnt combat related. There are two modes: Relic Hunt and Prestige. Relic Hunt is laughably easy while Prestige is unnecessarily difficult. This game is not worth $30 AUD and it should be reduced to $10 in its current state.

Has the hallmarks of a good indie game for me, interesting concept(s) done well in a game that doesn't feel like a clone of anything before it. The roguelike elements feel useful but not over powered. The ability to customize the size and difficulty gives the game as much or as little pain as you want.

The combat, isn't my favorite, but it's necessary to keep the tension of the runs going. I normally don't go for $18 indie games but this one I can recommend at this price point. It has enough replay ability for me and it's exciting.

Perfect for casual players who like to play one or two runs in the evening but also good for gamers who like to challenge themselves and play on hardest difficulty (because the hardest difficulty is actually very hard). Balancing wise there are some gadgets and loadouts that are clearly better than others but the process of finding that out is fun. I would encourage everybody not to look at guides and just go in blind and discover the game mechanics for yourself. This is also the first game for which I unlocked every achievement. I was motivated and had fun playing for 50 hours in total.

Plushfire5
Plushfire5

It's a good game, but I wouldn't recommend it, mostly because of how little it offers and the price. It will give you 7 hours of fun before it starts to feel pointless. Once you unlock all the world sizes it kinda loses any meaning to keep playing, maybe some objectives, missions, some variations that would make me keep going would have been nice. It's good, but for 18€ I wouldn't buy it. If you wanna try it, wait until a sale.

I've really enjoyed this game alot. Its mechanics are just the right balance between challenging and simple. The art is gorgeous and the enemy designs are unique and varied. It mixes alot of things i've liked about other rougue-likes and similar resource management concepts. Great job, devs. This game is a gem, and I will recommend it to whoever listens. Worth the price, especially if you get it on sale.

Fun little mining/turret wave defense game, not a lot of content or replayability. I love the music and overall atmosphere.

Once you've tried a few approaches to technique, gear and upgrades the bottom falls out a bit, there's a few obviously bad combinations, and a few obviously good ones.

I have very little interest in high score modes, so there's not much left to do after beating the "default" relic hunting game mode on all the various settings.

If it was any more expensive than this it would be very hard to recommend this game, but where it's at now is just borderline.

Just plain fun. Easy to lose yourself for hours playing. I would love a co-op mode of some sort, but still an awesome game

Repetitive and laborious, of course, Steam's policy doesn't let me refund it, so don't even bother trying it out. 18 euro for 2 games in total....

A great game that takes very little time to pick up on and is a new look for the old Tower Defense games. Already put eight hours in just a few days....very addictive.

The core gameplay loop is a lot of fun. You mine, find resources, upgrade equipment, and then fight monsters. There is a decent amount of variety in terms of setup, but you need to unlock these modifiers, and the game doesn't make the unlockables immediately obvious. Looking forward to more content being added in updates.

Personally i think this game is great, simple game play, art style is interesting and draws the eye. Can go from a walk in the park to oh $#!+ real quick.

Pretty good game for the asking price. Its similar to steamworl but with a timer put on it and a base defence mechanic. You basicly gather resources by digging and then proceed to upgrade your base and yourself with those resources. The goal of the game is to find an ancient relic, which is deep underground, and once you do the run is over. After completing a run you unlock something(a different weapon or a different gadget). Each unlock you get changes the gameplay a bit but not massivly. So each run its somewhat different but dont expect night and day stuff. Overall its a cool game that you can spend a few hours playing, its really hard but once you get the gist of it you can play it with ease.

Very good game and it's addicting, also pretty easy to beat. You can unlock the new stuff like sword dome, I would recommend this game.

this is a game everyone i know who has played it has a fantastic experience, the game puts you in a world full of horror, it feels lonely and sad and when you unlock pets of all things you dont feel so alone on your journey anymore, it perfects that feeling. The monsters design is terrifying and fits the various worlds you explore in game, 9.6/10 fantastic game great work

Great game.
You control the length of the game, difficulty and can unlock many gadgets, keeping it fresh. As well as this, has a prestige mode assuring you have reason to keep playing even after unlocking everything. Has frequent updates too. Well done devs.

I played the game first as it still had only the demo out and now I got the Full version.

I really like the art style (specially the Backgrounds are so beatiful) of the game and it's gameplay,
it will be a lot of fun for players who like this kind of grindy and a bit repetative gameplay
similar to Dungeon crawlers where a run takes around 15-45 min each.

as it is just fresh out it still lacks a bit of content right now (thought I'm already hyped for the new class soon coming out).
I had a lot of fun playing it for almost 20h now with all the different map modifiers, I feel for me its the type of game I can get back into even if I didn't play it for quite some time.

Unplayable since the last update.
Every game immediately starts with hard ground and barely any ressources, by wave 20 I can't even aford 5th first level upgrade.
