The ultimate Christianity simulator. Killing demons never felt so much closer to Jesus.

For a 2016 game, it still carries itself well up to today.

Gameplay is fun, gory and gritty. The weapon upgrade progression is well done outside of some imbalanced weapons. There are also other game modes to fiddle with.

Soundtrack is also good.

Loved every minute of this game. Perfect at the end of a stressful day.
Level design, combat and music are 10/10.

+Fast and frantic combat that rewards moving then standing static
+Great variety of weapons each with there own challenges connect to them
+Characterises the player character extremely without the player uttering a single line of dialogue
-Pacing issues
-Weapons can quickly come redundant
-Lacks the mobility moves found in the sequel
Review:
Doom(2016) is a fast and frantic shooter which rewards constant movement and pits the player into big arenas to fight off hordes of demons which it never relents on sending the hordes after you. It offers a great variety of different weapons to fight the horde off and rewards you for quick up close deaths of the enemies. It however is wrought with pacing issues where you receive all your weaponry early in the game which quickly makes the more weaker weapons redundant then they necessary needed to. It also places all of it’s bosses in the end game instead of spreading them throughout the game. Still the game does a good job keeping the main gameplay loop interesting but the pacing could be improved.

I tend to like solo campaign style games. Just what I was looking for. Intense fighting, a bit of mystery. Playing through again on on harder difficulty. The action keeps it fresh.

Wait, wrong game? Aah, that's why I couldn't toilet the final bosses...

Anyway, just the perfect FPS experience.

All of the best things about video games with none of the boring stuff. Great FPS, beautiful graphics with a great style, very satisfying combat, a story that is fun if you pay attention but doesn't really require you to believe it's deeper than just killing demons because it's cool as shit. Love this game.

This is one of the only games that gives me an extreme adrenaline rush every time I open it. Despite being 8 years old, it's still visually stunning and has great cinematic moments, while still drawing you in with storyline and intrigue. The eastereggs and dedication to the original DOOM are touches that show how much time and care the devs and artists put in.
And that's not even mentioning the gameplay itself.
You move in a way that makes you feel impossibly badass, and the fact that the demons will run away from you if you kill a comrade standing close to them is just... impeccable.

I probably remember it wrong, but I once read one of those stories of game design ingenuity about the original Quake, about how when you fire the rocket launcher, the missile actually spawns right behind you, because it turns out to optimize both game performance and the felt rhythm of play.

DOOM (2016) pulls this kind of tricks all the time. The game will snap you a small distance in space to make you feel and look good, giving you that last inch to grab a ledge, or letting you activate a finishing move at the last possible second, right when you most need the health boost it dispenses. Jonathan Blow talks about "generosity" as a design value, when you take a player gesture or affordance that might typically be kept scarce to make it exciting (such as time rewinds in Prince of Persia) and make it available all the time. DOOM is not a comprehensively generous game: it understands the micro-narrative impact of running out of railgun rounds two-thirds through a fight and having to revise your tactics in response (or taking a different approach on the next reload). But it is generous about the core experience of dancing around and shredding up hellspawn: you always have a shot, and it always look sick as shit.

This game is at its best when I'm on my fifth try at a particular sequence and I'm reminding myself to just move fast and never stop. I know this song, after all.

No joke, probably one of the best first-person shooters of all time. The visuals are amazing, the music (especially the way it adjusts to suit the action onscreen) is amazing, the combat is fantastic... you owe it to yourself to play this one.

This feels like a game from a different timeline. It's core gameplay went wildly against what was standard for FPSes at the time, ditching cover and falling back when injured with fast paced movement and the glory kill system that pushed you to keep going as hard as possible when you were injured. Even if Eternal didn't live up to the hype, you can feel the impact of this game in many fast paced FPSes today.

It has a really good soundtrack, quite fitting for the game. Games where they really go at the artwork are
alot more entertaining, I'd say the story and artwork is actually more important than the gameplay itself, thats
just my opinion.

The game isn't very fun. I was convinced to buy this instead of Eternal, i was in the mood for a quick easy fps and it didn't even deliver on that. I didn't get Eternal because I didn't want something difficult but this wasn't it. It's a awkward in between between too easy and a fun satisfying gorefest, it's just not fun. Get Eternal it's better at both aspects than this one.

I have been playing for about 13 hours off and on and recently this game just does not want to start anymore. I was thinking that it just needed an update so I wanted a few days to see if there were any updates. The game still would not start so I uninstalled and reinstalled but the game will not start. I just tried to start the game again today and it will not start. I can play the game and I still believe that I have not finished the game. I want my money back or upgrade to the latest title so I can still play the game.

This is a pure adrenaline rush of a game with some really kickass music. However upon replaying this game on PC, I've realized this game is just a less polished version of Doom Eternal. I would still recommend this game since there is a lot of fun to be had even if the weapon tuning and enemy design isn't as refined as it could be.

So... I'm usually not too big on shooter-style games, but DOOM is a huge exception to the rule for me.
What a game! The combat's fun, the music is great, the enemies are crazy...! As are the lock-down/security breach events.

I can imagine I still have a long way to go before clearing the game, but so far, so good.
The only part that stresses me out is the Rune challenges, but that's because I suck at challenges.

I'd definitely recommend this game to anyone who wants to feel like a total badass whilst slaying thousands of demons!

DOOM 1 and 2 were my introduction to PC gaming and (eventually) a 20-year career in software. This remake is incredibly high quality. The action balance is superb, the sound and music fantastic, and is very low on glitches compared to so many other games.

I was really trying to enjoy this game but after playing Ultra Kill I was looking for another good movement shooter to play, Now I knew this would be slower paced than UK but the fact that it's just small combat sections with prolonged and encouraged exploration in a game that was advertised to be non-stop gory action just really bored me

The combat that there was felt decent though, The lack of hit indication didn't help the feel though and the story was alright.

I guess if you enjoy this style of game, go for it. It is pretty good if a little dumbed down.

It's a shame that multiplayer is dead and 50% of the game achievements are for multiplayer mode, essentially means they are unobtainable unless you are willing find friends to play with.

This is a steam deck review since that’s the only way I’ve played it. TL;DR - it’s freaking awesome and I totoally recommend it.

I got this game shortly after I got my steam deck as it was on sale. I missed this when it came out as honestly it just seemed like any old FPS game. But damn is this game fun. Super slick gameplay, fantastic array of weapons, crunchy sound track, ridiculously satisfying glory kills. I’m just about to finish it (I think) but I’m already planing on playing it through again as I’ve gotten a lot better since my first run and the game just kinda drives you to improve and find all the secrets/bonuses.

Steam deck wise, hell yeah it plays amazing and the controls and absolutely bang on. I didn’t expect to, but freaking love using the gyro for rapid aiming - can’t believe how good it feels and how natural it ends up being. Battery wise, it’s def a drainer on the deck but being able to play this on the bus/train was just awesome.

Fantastic game, I got it for $5 on sale but it’s def worth its current $20 price tag IMO.

If boomer shooters were a thing then this would be the poster child. It's tedious, dull, repetitive and unashamedly so to such an extent that I don't even know if that's a bad thing. I mean I don't like those weirdly realistic hunting games so it feels a bit like criticising one of those for spending too much time on waiting for a duck to appear. Doom however is bland so if that's all part of the boomer shooter appeal then fine but this game has incredibly dull graphics (Quake 3 levels of brown, grey and dark green bland) with uninspiring enemy variety, way too many upgrade systems which is somehow cancelled out by none of them being interesting, a deliberately tongue in cheek crap story with the joke being that even the protagonist doesn't care and combat that reaches the lofty height of being okay.

You run, you shoot, you jump (or not since jumping mostly results in instant death) and you tediously use finishers to get more health or ammo. The whole finisher mechanic might have been fun if it weren't overused but you'll have to use it constantly because the games combat is designed around seeing each enemy as a particularly rascally packet of chips that can only be opened by pulling their tits off first. As a result it stops being fun after the first few goes and instead simply slows down the combat which is otherwise fine albeit hamstrung by enemies telegraphing their appearance five miles in advance with obnoxious screams, glowing red light and a ticker-tape parade announcing any new types.

I guess if you like generic run and gun shooters which give zero shits about story, character development, interesting visuals or any video game developments this side of the millennium then this is the game for you. Personally I'd rather go to a pilates with galloping diarrhoea then play this visual equivalent.

I’ve been trying to make my reviews more dynamic recently, adding stories and focusing more on the theming and soul of a game. I find these to just be a lot more fun to write but I don’t feel as much of an inclination here for the simple fact that I just don’t like Doom.

This puts me in a sort of conundrum of journalist ethics. I didn’t care for Doom, I found it to be monotonous and boring, the music was fine, the levels looked very nice but apart from that they were fine. So by all means it should get a thumbs down, a red mark because I didn’t like it. End of story.

The problem is Doom is a very well made game.

In no universe can you say Doom is objectively bad game. You can say you didn’t personally like it, but you can’t say it’s intrinsically a bad game. The shooting, though I found it to be repetitive, is satisfying in all the right ways and all the guns carry a nice punch to them. The Ai is reactive enough to put up a fight but stupid enough to still make you feel like a badass. All the animations are smooth. The gameplay loop is simple but effective. The music is very well composed and fits the aestetic well. The levels are open ended but still carefully built to give fights a natural flow, making each fight unique regardless of times played. The levels themselves are all very pretty and have a shocking amount of detail in every corner. Even the story is surprisingly well written, acted, and executed despite it not needing much of one.

By all means this is the video game of video games, if that makes any sense. It is meant to be fun first and cannot be replicated on any other form of media. The feeling it tries to capture can only be done through the medium of video games, and it does a damn good job at it too.

So why didn't I like it? How can I praise a game but at the same time give it a thumbs down?

I’ve played a lot of games in my time. Probably too many to be healthy and though it’s done little for me in terms of practical application it has, at least, given me a broad understanding of the medium. In that time I’ve played a lot of games I’ve liked and even more that I didn’t.

It’s usually pretty easy to tell the difference between a game made by a bureaucratic team trying to maximize profits vs a game made by a passionate team of developers who wanted to make a fun game. Of course there are exceptions on both sides (Mafia: Definitive and Far Cry 3 come to mind) but for the most part it’s fairly consistent.

You can feel the love put into Doom. How every aspect was created with the specific intention of making the game fun. The interesting story and beautifully crafted maps are just icing on the cake. It really is a great game.

So when it comes down to what I actually don't like about the game it can be kind of hard to put into words.

This is of course a “me” problem and I am in the vast minority here. All my friends who’ve played Doom love it and sing its praise. It just doesn’t scratch the same itch for me, it doesn’t click. I don’t get that heart pounding dopamine strike from the fast paced action of Doom. I get about the same amount of enjoyment out of a Call of Duty campaign.

Now I’m not saying Call of Duty is anywhere close to the level of polish and quality of Doom I’m just saying I have about the same amount of fun.

It’s kind of weird too because I’m not adverse to fast paced violent games. I love Hotline Miami, Black Mesa, TF2, and Wolfenstein. Though not the same design philosophy as Doom these games cater to a similar gameplay loop and style. But for some reason Doom ends up lower on my list then the others.

Maybe I’m just a nihilistic prick who just hates video games, maybe I’m just to stupid to get it. Or maybe I’m just too pretentious and think I'm above it all.

I think the most telling thing I can put here is my favorite Doom is Doom 3, the game that is the least like Doom out of the franchise. I like the tight corridors, dark atmosphere, and slower more methodical gameplay. That’s just more my speed.

Doom is a fine game, maybe even a great game, that I didn’t like. And that’s okay.

Is it worth picking up anyway? Honestly, yes, chances are you will enjoy this game even if I didn't, so I don’t know why I even took the time to write all this out.

8/10 - Yes, yes, I know a high score for a thumbs down but I can’t help it, it’s a well made game giving it a lower score based on my own biases wouldn’t be fair to the devs. It's a useless review score by some nobody on the internet get over it.
