Worst sequel ever! They had everything right on the first one but this one is a clunky mess. The mechanics are so bad that you will keep dying for it. For instance, in chapter 2 after killing the boss, the main character keeps coughing from the toxic gas in the environment and she will stop running and keep coughing after 15 secs, the ghosts will easily kill you during that animation and you can't do shit. It is so frustrating like I get it, the devs were trying to take a realistic route but if it's breaking the gameplay, PLEASE DON'T ADD these unnecessary improvements. The game is filled with bugs and optimized very poorly. No clear game direction about where you have to go and the map system is useless. Sorry, I can't continue this garbage.

A revolting mass of bad design and frustrating mechanics. The combat is atrocious and the boss battles are the worst I've ever seen in a horror title. Any potential this has is squandered by its abysmal gameplay, I can't stress enough how infuriating the whole experience is. The most effective scares of DreadOut 2 come from trying to fathom why it's in such a sorry state.

Another failure in a series of sadness.

I like the franchise. That being said, if you want your fix, try something else. Look, they did a lot. Screenshots show they put way more into this one then the first which I appreciate. That being said, two things absolutely kill this game.

1. Key binding is COMPLETELY broken.
Especially controller. You want to swap A with B (because someone thought B was the dedicated action button! Boss, it has ALWAYS been A! A = Action B = Back!). Swap all you want... As SOON as you back out, swap to a different category and come back, it doesn't just reset, it completely erases half the bindings! As in NO action saved. You can set again and again and again and again. Uninstall and reinstall... Doesn't matter. So you can walk around but no menu, camera, action, back out or even attack. Good luck.

2. Shooting a camera has never been harder.
No matter how good you think you are (ghost is centered) you can and will miss. I know it is broken because I have aimed at legs, arms, center of chest, I even had the ghost half way in and out of the inner circle (kill shot area) and it count. Other, and majority of the times, NOPE! Meaning this game is ALL over the place thinking of where that camera should be aiming. If I had to guess, the ghosts move so fast the game still thinks it is in a particular spot. It isn't though. Instead it is in your face stun locking you to death.

Until a modder comes around (as usual), or the devs want to save face, I CANNOT recommend this game. It truly is fundamentally broken. I thought Dreadout had issues but man. The devs upgraded not only the game but the bugs and completely left it like this. After Dreadout (1) and this, Keepers is the only one that gave the cleanest play through. But I cannot recommend Keepers because without playing Dreadout (1), you'll be completely lost. Granted you CAN at least fight in Dreadout. So buyer beware, but still, I was able to finish the first game.

Sorry if I sound mean. I truly like the franchise and I want to keep playing (this is where all the frustration is coming from). I also like helping up and coming devs too. But you have to understand, CdProRed made it HUGE after Witcher3. They built their confidence with a few games before feeling confident enough to drop Cyberpunk the way they did thinking they might come by unscathed. Pre selling 14 million copies of Cyber. Digital Happiness on the other hand got a half way decent hit and straight turned around and said "Good enough!" on the sequel.

I TRULY hope they do not leave it in this state. But with so many stories like this ending badly, I wouldn't be surprised. So as far as their next game goes, I'm good. Plus I hear it will be a Dead by Daylight clone. I could be wrong this was just in a discussion I saw. If that is true, what a waste. Seeing how single player games run, I CANNOT and DO NOT want to imagine an online one.

Best of luck Digital.

I've never seen so much padding in my entire gaming life.
Make a solid compact game = get recommended
Add needles padding to make it longer = don't get recommended
Simple as that.

I liked the first Dreadout despite its flaws.
I especially like the main character and ghost designs. The combat is also fine for a horror game. The soundtrack does its job.
But man... this is such a severe case where less would be more and just cutting out unnecessary stuff would make this game better. These devs are ambitious and they do put an effort, but they lack someone to tell them where good taste stops and plain circus begins...
It's an indie game, sure, but the problem doesn't lie with the lack of assets\time\manpower. On the contrary!
If you play the game you'll see they had more then they needed but for some reason decided to use it ALL three times over. They had all that is needed to make a good game, but their ambition got the better of them.
And to drive the final nail in...
Unlike the first Dreadout, the second one is rarely scary and often just tedious or boring.
I play at night and with headphones mind you. I respect my horror games and try to immerse myself, but Dreadout 2 does everything it can to pull me out of that immersion.
It seems to me that a good part of the dev team knew what they are doing, but another part managed to ruin it.
Look... if you are really out of horror games, this might even be ok on a sale.
If you like the main character as much as I do, you might even finish it.
But for all it's worth, it's a shame because this game could have been up there with the better ones.

There are a lot of things I like about this game. There are segments of the game that I really enjoyed. However, 75% of the time spent on the game was wandering in empty places exploring areas that contained nothing. The 'combat' is generally terrible. Its very easy to get pinned in a corner or hit as soon as you open a door in a number of places throughout the game. The boss battles are exhausting, tedious, and feel unfair a majority of the time. This game could be narrowed down to about 3-4 hours of solid gameplay and a rework of boss mechanics could turn this into a short and sweet game that I think would hold its own and be very popular. As it is, its just a slog and not worth the effort.

Very disappointed in this game when the first one was amazing! I would highly recommend not to buy even if it was $5. The game is poorly made with so many bugs and glitches. I had to restart TWICE in ACT 2 when trying to get the little girls's toy while getting stuck on the yellow switch. The Mechanics are horrible especially in Act 3 with that tiger fight. There isn't really anything you can do to improve when its mainly the functionality of the game. Graphic is very poor for a game made not that long ago. Some scene looks good and then it'll look like $hit next scene. Developers got very lazy on the dialogue as well. The coffee mission is a waste of time.... Overall, the game felt like the developers rushed it..... Have you ever stalled on your homework and did it last minute just to turn something in???? Yeah, this would be it. Plus, they dont even care to release patch notes to clean up the game. That says a lot.

The game itself is great, not as great as the first, but it's a good sequel in terms of continuing the story. I can't recommend it because the combat system and controls are mad janky. Having a character to play as with slow movement and slow attacks, against enemies that move faster and attack faster doesn't make the game scarier, it makes it quite frustrating. It only starts being a problem towards the difficult bits at the end.

This was an epic Installement to the serious. You really feel new strength when playing Linda. She has evolved and is ready kick the spirits right back to oblivion. Still feel that delicious dread just easier to follow objectives and you feel an ease in direction.
As always wish it was longer with more side quests and exploration of the minor characters. But AGAIN! love it i nnnnnnnever got bored. It is one of my favorite games. I still replay it.

This game I feel has thrown so much into it that it almost ruins it. The combat in this game is so boring. it's just stun your enemies and swing away. There's always 0 tension in these fights because you're able to stun everything. The map you can walk around is just stupid imo. After the intro sequence which was the best part of the game for me, I was thrown out of the entire game by the music, other npc's, and the happy atmosphere of this town.... This doesn't feel like a horror game, it feels like an anime action game. I don't recommend this game to anyone.

Such an amazing storyline to this game from start to finish. Gameplay (although just a bit buggy) is fantastic and the puzzles are quite simple. Had a few slip ups here and there but that may just be a "me" thing. I highly suggest playing this game and hopefully I can highly recommend DreadOut as well which is definitely next on the list! 10/10

I am a fan of the original DreadOut, I played some of the Keepers of the Dark (but stopped halfway through because it is just a boss rush and tbh the bosses are the least polished aspect of the francise Imho, though great designs). This breaks my heart because this series has so much potential, but, the fighting in this is atrocious. And there is ALOT of fighting.

The original DreadOut is like a love letter type of wannabe Fatal Frame, for all of us who don't own other consols than PCs (or PC, SNES and Wii in my case). It's shortcomings even sort of worked to it's advantage in the original. Think of how Silent Hills mist/fog was a result of tech limitations working to the storys benefit. And it was built up on great atmosphere, most of all.

DreadOut 2 is furiously annoying when it comes to gameplay. There are way too many bossfights, with unclear tactics and irratic AI. Sometime you will need to stun with your flash before shooting, sometimes the flash is out of order, sometimes the camera itself (for reasons that remains unexplained). I think you always have to have a headshot for a succesful hit, but again, it is not specified, and so it just feels completely random and clunky. Sometimes you are in a tight area where a huge enemy take up like a 4th of the entire fighting arena but you still have to try and keep distance enough to manage to capture the head, but all you'll see before being stunblocked is the enemies butt and one leg. Many times if you don't get the first hit in you might as well reload checkpoint because you'll never get back up. You don't even know most of the times where other enemeies are, you'll have to resort to running around blindly and hope you'll get lucky with your shots, because you just wanna try and keep moving and be a hard target. This even goes for some minor enemies. Especially since most enemies will be appearing out of thin air and moving through walls, and you get little to no hint as of where, how and why (other than the fact they're ghosts of course).

If it weren't for the boss fights, I'd enjoy this alot more. I enjoy the atmosphere and the urban legends etc, however the bad controls, lack of explainations combined with the bugs (which still are abundant despite alot of fixes since release) makes this hard to recommend. I managed to get through it all though, no small feat I proclaim, mainly because I really REALLY like some aspects of this, and I do wanna support Digital Happiness as a smaller company.
But as an example, you learn something and attempt that same stategy at the next fight, but you die because the rules of the fight is different for that next fight, but without any explaination or any type of reasoning.

And another addition to my frustration with this game is that it has auto save function, and no manual saves, only profiles. Which is absolutely insane with a game of this difficulty level and randomness. Near the end of the game, I was lucky enough to have the game for whatever reason place me infront of a cabinet of sorts where I was to place a bunch of items I'd collected. And so I did, not even remembering having found this place before but rather having died to an enemy somewhere near at an earlier attempt. And it's like that alot of the times. You may die, load checkpoint, find your bearings and stuff seems different, either more difficult or less so depending on factors you'll never know.

Bossfights in particularly seems completely out of your hands and up to pure chance. However, some others have complained about the world being empty and the attempt at an open world with some side missions being over ambitious, and I actually disagree on that point. I enjoyed doing the side missions more so than the main ones, and the idea of ghosts and memories of past events being around us all the time in hidden spots appeal to me immensly. I would LOVE a game where everything seems normal until you use a camera or whatever to unveil hidden clues and stories in everyday scenarios. Give me that game!

Weak story that leaves tons of questions and answers very little, "kind of open world" that has nothing to offer in terms of exploring, graphics are better than in first game, but still mediocre, fighting quickly becomes boring and very infuriating at the end of the game: you don't have blocks, dodges or any defensive moves so good luck fighting last boss, several enemies and THESE FUCKING TENTACLES FROM THE CEILING THAT CAN'T BE KILLED simultaneously in one room.

Tetapi Linda bukanlah wanita penakut.

One of the most cheapest, thoughtless and fundamentally broken indie horror attempt ever.
Rate: 1.5/5 - It's a clusterfucking sad mess of trial and error.
*I know expecting too much from an indie game is already frowned upon but that is when a game is playable without atleast the game or rather the objects and geometry screwing up your character's movement. Here, even the basic boss fights have no proper dynamics. It's like devs could only code a single string for bosses and said "Fuck it! I don't know any more math than this" so they asked the graphics guy to make the bosses fucking invisible with no sense of defence left for the players.
*Okay it's a damn ghost game. You don't see ghosts, do you? I guess you can put this argument if the ghosts and their behaviour were otherwise exciting. But no! You are required to do a single move against those ghost bosses for frustratingly infinite amount of time. And without having no variable and intriguing strategy against them you are literally stuck in an overwhelmingly boring senseless loop of trial and error.
*Oh yeah and it doesn't help that the more you progress, the more cheap and left out the game and boss fights tend to become. Again it's like even for a crucial boss fight they thought "Ah there's too much calculation to make a new bossfight. Let's just throw some grunts in the area and restrict player's movement by placing some attacking tentacles".
*Also some very detrimental game breaking bullshit make it even more frustrating like, how the enemies creep up on you from where-ever while Linda performs the slowest execution animations on another enemy, just to have her stuck in between them. By unable to move and continously getting hit or grabbed, the character just dies with players not being able to do shit. It's like you're forced to watch how your character gets killed because the game doesn't let you do anything. Fucking annoying.

If you are someone with a bit of sanity and a working life left, save your money and stay away from this nonsense. I got it in a sale of like 80% off and still reflecting on my life decisions that led me to buy this.

buggy, terrible combat mechanic (dont know why dev thought it was a good idea, like, killing ghosts using a female character? are you kidding me?), repetitive stuff, a bit of Yakuza style exploration but not enough stuff to do, and just like previous games, this game doesnt tell me what to do most of the time and it pissed me off

A dark and atmospheric Indonesian horror game with puzzles and combat. The world and the story are beautifully crafted. You take pictures of spirits with your phone's camera to fight them. The camera's flash can be used to stun some spirits and there are other weapons to. To beat the spirits you must have an iron will and be able to sprint in bursts, else you might find yourself sacrificed ;)

BioHazard

It's a shame I can't recommend DreadOut 2. While the first game had it's problems it was still good for what it was. DreadOut 2 however didn't do so well, at least in my opinion. I'll list off some good points and bad points so there may be some spoilers in my review so read at your own risk if you're interested in playing.

DreadOut 2 takes place a short time after the events of the first game. Linda has become a victim of bullying and harassment from her fellow students due to the fact that she was the only survivor on the trip with her classmates in the last game, so people suspect her of having something to do with it. Even more so when she starts experiencing seeing ghosts again and people think she's acting strange.

Alright good points first... I'm gonna be honest I can't think of any. Any that would be relevant to the game play anyway soooo moving onto the bad points instead.

1) Poor Story

The plot for DreadOut 2 is just a mess. There really isn't a continuation from the first game, the only link is Miss Siska herself when she returns. Other than that, it just kinda throws all over the place with almost no connection to the previous level. All we know is that there's a dark force messing with the spirits. And before you know it, giant snake people trying to take over the world. That's really how fast it transitions lol nothing is really explored about this dark force. It shows up, then it's gone, then you find out Linda's part of family that as spiritual powers (cliche I know) then you gotta fight some snake lady and finally Miss Siska herself. The end. If you want to follow along you're better reading the wiki page about the plot lol.

2) Bland Characters

Linda is the only interesting character in the whole game and she only speaks through text. You meet other people through free roaming or the story itself, but none them stand out nor do they last long in the spotlight. They show up, say a line or two, then they're out of the picture. It makes the world seem so empty despite there being more people in it than the first game. I expected a little more since you could free roam around Linda's town.

3) Bad Combat

Yeah you can actually physically fight in this game, only when it allows it like giving Linda a weapon. However, Linda is not a combatant at all. You have to time your attacks just right if you wanna make a connection because Linda swings pretty slowly and kinda wildly. You can stun enemies with the light on your phone but this doesn't always work at least from my experience. You won't be fighting all the time, usually you'll combat ghosts normally with the camera on your phone which I would've kind of preferred it be the whole game. I thought it'd feel pretty good to be able to fight back finally but it was kinda frustrating at times. Oh and I'd like to point out that the boss fight with Blorong is pure bullshit. Constant attacks, no recovery, slow swinging, multiple enemies ugh. The less I think about that fight the better XD

Well that's just about it. There's not much too this game, and from what little there is, it's not a lot of good. I wish I could go more in depth but there just isn't much to work with here. If you're really interested, it'd be best to wait for a good sale. If you get, I hope you enjoy it more than I did.

Generally speaking, the game is not bad, because there are always some bugs and system loopholes due to funding and technical problems. Originally 12 pieces were made, but now it has become eight chapters. I hope the game crew will enhance, optimize and supplement the content. In addition, we players will try our best to support the funding!

There's a lot of improvement from the first game and this one.

Graphics improved thanks to Unreal Engine.
Some side missions.
Each ghosts have their own story (added some charms to the story).
Even when the game gives you some sharp weapons to defend yourself, the game is still fun to play and you can still feel the horror & intense of this game.
Combat is a bit too easy when you have a weapon, but sometimes they get annoying because you can get stuck in cramped maps (the hospital map) or get surrounded by lots of ghosts.
Linda's sexier outfit than the first game doesn't match with the setting of the horror game.
Mute protagonist makes the game a bit boring.

It's still a fun game with some story.

My score: 7.6/10

Pretty good. Genuinely creepy and tense atmosphere. I enjoyed it a lot. It was also nice to see a game takes place in Indonesia. It was fascinating to take a glimpse into their culture. Also, the audio is excellent, both the music and ambiance.

I had heard this game was pretty buggy and had a lot of issues people were frustrated with when it first was released. Most things seemed patch playing this in october of 2021. Digital Happiness is a small team working during a pandemic, so they deserve a lot of credit for keeping at it and patching things to make the experience better for the players.

Its a good, fun, scary game. worth a purchase. One of the better indy games I think i've played on steam.

the few negatives that remain are this: sometimes the doors would stick. theyd let you push them open but theyd open so slow and you had to keep pushing at them. sometimes they opened fine but it was kind of annoying. that is the only technical problem i had with the entire game

also some of the bosses and 1 or 2 enemies are so fast they can be hard to hit and kind of get you into a stun loop until death if unlucky. a few harder enemies/bosses can be annoying to fight but linda has a ton of health so she can take a real beating before going down and they are generous with the save points. So that was appreciated. I still would have greatly preferred an easy, normal, hard mode option. but the difficulty ended up being fine in the end

I really wanted to like this game but man, the combat system is atrocious, there is no defense or dodge mechanic so you pretty have to take damage to fight anything, ridiculous amounts of stun-locking, like a lot of enemies once they hit you they can just keep hitting you till you die with no opportunity to escape or retaliate. The game just becomes mostly trial-and-error and dumb luck to get through a lot of obstacles (by Act 6 I just gave up). This game's idea of "challenge" is just throwing frustrating scenarios at you with poor controls to hinder you.

Also the game decided to do this Silent Hill-y approach where now you can melee things which in theory isn't a bad idea, though in turn means the phone has to take a backseat. I get maybe they wanted to change up the combat but instead this just came out as a worse version of Silent Hill and Fatal Frame's mechanics amalgamated into this clunky mess.

Aesthetically this game is good, enjoy the enemy design and graphically it's improved. There are some obvious bugs and considering this is an indie game I can overlook all that since that can be buffed out anyway but when the core gameplay itself is so bad I just can't justify finishing this game (which I wanted to see to the end but as I said before Act 6 was the last straw for me).

Hoping maybe some kind of patch/overhaul comes up that fixes the game or something or the next installment mends all these issues.

ALSO why are there a bunch of switching between english and indonesian voices?

This is so bad. DreadOut 1 was much better. This game was infuriating and frustrating. The battle mechanics was frustrating. Most of the time I'm running around in circles trying to look for clues. This is by far the only game I had to use YouTube to help point me to where I'm suppose to go. I wanted to just focus on the plot, but even the plot I'm not sure till the very end what is going on. The subtitles and fonts used were so tiny. Just an overall frustrating game to play.

I love the DreadOut games but this particular one I cannot recommend in it's current state. The combat system is disgusting and game breaking. There's no dodge or block mechanic which leaves you forced to take constant hits, you can get cornered and boxed in by enemies which leave you unable to move, the attacks you do with weapons are too damn slow, enemies are fast as hell at times and give you no time to line up your shot when aiming with the camera. There are many other things I can see that are issues but I feel the biggest problem is the combat system. If that's ever fixed I will change my review to a positive one, which I really hope they do fix it because I really enjoy the story, atmosphere, and theme of this game.

This game leaves me conflicted. On one hand it has a really good world and atmosphere to it and it is fun to explore the areas you find yourself in. On the other there are a lot of moment of just running around with nothing happening or just waiting for the game to continue. It can also be beat pretty fast if you know what to do and where to go. I'm pretty sure there is a boss that can't actually kill you unless you try to die to them. Also the final boss fight is very annoying because of everything there except the boss. Overall the parts I liked I really liked but the parts I didn't were pretty annoying to just bad.

Huge upgrade from the first one in every way. Although I am still lost on parts of the story, it is a great and interesting game to play if you love horror. I was in love with the hack and slash action we got compared to last game of simply running and snapping photos, I appreiciate the change in fighting while still staying true to the first one.

Nice game, a little clunky like its prequel.
The different locations were a nice addition, it was great to see Linda again.

The game in general is easier than the first two games, both in enemies and puzzles, with exception of the egg puzzle in Act 6

Play only if you have completed the prior games.

While the main conflict of the saga is solved in this game, I would be eager to see the developers continuing with Linda's Travel as a Keeper of the Dark.

I always lower my expectations when going into sequels of games but this is one of those cases where the sequel has outdone it's origins.
Brings combat into the game which is easy to master but satisfying in it's own way.
Although the game uses jumpscares at times, it is heavily reliant on it's creepy atmosphere and sounds to really suck you in.
If you liked DreadOut or are interested in it in the slightest, this is a must play.
Very fun

The game needs more voice conversation, especially Linda.

Seem like this game version is the worst one among others of the DO franchises. The graphic is not much the problem with me. However, this DO2 came up with lots of bugs and quest glitches. The battle mechanic (photographing) in this DO 2 is really horrible in comparison to the other two.

DreadOut 1 was much better than its sequel. I loved the first game, it felt more like it had an actual "shape", a purpose, with a beginning and an end to the story. It was creepy, and scary at times, and it had a great atmosphere, and even better ghosts and boss fights...

The DLC Keepers Of The Dark was already showing that the franchise was gooing downhill, it felt very generic with no story and frustrating with the boss fights and it was all about boss fights. I didn't even bother to finish it.

DreadOut 2 feels like a messy game. The "open world" looks lifeless and empty most of the time. The combat system feels clunky and delayed. Often the enemies block your path completely, so you can't really do much more than getting hit. Also sometimes enemies are immune to your attacks for a while ... This is absurd. Dear developers, do you guys really enjoy fighting against the ghosts in this game?

Sometimes the checkpoint is way back, so after you'll respawn, you'll need to replay some really annoying parts. Also, the melee weapons shouldn't be needed to fight ghosts. Not even mentioning how super slow those weapon's hits are ...

The quests, a lot of them could be better. Also the game sounds are as irritating as they could be constantly looping, and those goblins ghosts, incredibly lame annoying sound that will make wish you had the sound off.

...But ok... it's not all bad, the enviornment and the atmosphere at times look quite pretty, the graphics aren't bad. Feels like teh game has potential but it also feels unfinished to me.

Just the fact that I still can't see the cutscenes, after all this time they haven't made an update to fix the black screen cutscenes problem. Starting a game with a black screen cutscene is indeed a bad omen for the game's experience.

For now, as someone who enjoyed DreadOut 1 a lot,... I do not recommend this sequel.
I will keep playing, unit I finish it, the maybe I will add some more words to this review...

Edit: So I have finished the game, and must say it wasn't as bad as I thought, but still if felt so very random. Some bosses were nicer than others, tho...

But all in all, honestly, the game is a dissapointment, as Evil within 2 was to the first one, I feel just the same kind of disappointment, and both first games went to tight and scary to open world all-over-the-place-insanity.

When I finished Dreadout 2, I couldn't even see the credits, as they rolled two times I was just staring at a black screen, but at least the rock song was nice. Oh yes that song was AMAZING. So props to that!

Edit 2: so I also finished the horrible epilogue and I was very annoyed by it. It's utterly pointless. I also didn't like how I must play the epilogue on the same save file that I had during story mode, so it overwrited mine and when I finished the totally pointless epilogue, all the extras and costumes I have unlocked were simply gone, for some reason, vanished into thin air.

Now I can finally uninstall it, it will be a pleasure. Great game design, you guys!

I thoroughly enjoyed the first Dreadout and Keepers of the Dark, so I was pretty excited to play this one. There are quite a few issues but most of all the combat is just far too clunky. I'm all for difficult games but dying over and over to a boss because of bad game mechanics and clunky controls is a lot different than learning from mistakes to improve. After many deaths to a boss in chapter 3 I googled only to find countless people mention frustration and that beating this boss included a lot of sheer luck. I refuse to keep trying over and over only to hopefully luck on the boss's movements to be able to progress. I'm disappointed that this game had so much potential but IMO falls short of the prior entries.

Dreadout 2 is a direct sequel to one and Keeper of the dark, it's a horror game heavily inspired in Fatal Frame, now with melee combat as well, which is wierd since the combat change with the chapters, but it's a nice change of pace.
However, the combat need to be more polish, specially because it's so easy to be stunlocked to the enemy, the game try to fix that giving you checkpoints and some times giving you invencibility, but I think they should try a more fair aproach to this.

The story is great even thought the english translation is lazy, and the voice acting is good but some of dialog are not complete. but Dreadout: Keepers at the dark is better than this game, The new combat system is simple its great having new the experience but its clunky. I hate the enemies. i experiencing bad rng at the tiger when you near at his portals, then the worst black ghost that can run with long arms, wrong capture/run 100% dead when you encounter, and the eye some irritating that stab on you when you're not near at it. I'm disappointed that this game had so much potential.

Really love the dreadout games. This one i really enjoyed in some parts ,but noticed alot of things that could be improved by a lot. I would rate this game a 6.5/10. after finishing it i had mixed thoughts.
the bad:
1. very little camera combat and ghosts/ghostpedia.
2. Lots of interesting locations but not much to do. a more compact/liner game would be good.
3. Could of had more knife combat. felt awesome stabin monsters!!
4. the Ax combat felt really clunky and slow.
5. dreadlings in both camera and melee combat weren't that fun to fight against
6. Game is still a bit buggy

the good:
1. the hold to do more damage in camera combat added more depth to camera combat.
2.the ghostpedia artwork is fantastic!
3. linda is sooooo pretty in this game!
4. Enemy designs are very cool and some have interesting mechanics.
5. the knife combat was really fun to play with. STAB STAB :D
6. enemy designs are awesome.

What it should of kept from previous games:
1. puzzles involving the camera
2. Linda's vignette power
3. Kept running on shift

As someone who was a fan of the original, despite it's very indie look and gameplay, as well as a host of other problems, I genuinely had high hopes for this game.

In a lot of ways, every ambition achieved also came with a deluge of frustrating issues that exacerbated my frustrations. Yes, there is combat. However, it is clunky, slow, does not come with a lock on even though it shines best in 1v1 encounters, and whether or not you can actually fight is completely at the mercy of the games whims. Technically, there are TWO combat modes; one in which you aim your phone and hit ghosts - usually three times - the other is in which you are given a weapon to swing at monsters, usually three times. It's very cut and dry, easily done, with only different kinds of monsters literally being thrown at you at the last level. It's...passable.

The story is one in which our protagonist rarely makes any choices and is led to every encounter like a horse to water. Rarely will she have anything to say to react to the crazy situations she finds herself in, and often times, it doesn't make it clear when an event is a dream, a ghostrealm encounter(the hotel is one in which the others can't see and this is the only time it happens), or something actually occurring in the waking world(where seemingly every poor sunavabitch is dragged into most times). Surrealism is a tool used with intent to confuse, not one accidentally stumbled upon because of dev failure to use the most basic of communicative tools - dialogue. The main character lacks agency and voice.

Speaking of dialogue, the one voice actress in this game is actually pretty good! There are a few instances where her delivery is absolutely hilarious though, and it comes at the end. "Well, Well, well. I didn't expect that" anyone? I literally snorted because I have a deep suspicion she had no idea the circumstances in which this line is said, because I doubt her performance would be so casual.

Despite all those problems I listed before....I was having fun! I really was. I came into the game expecting this to be an extremely low budget endeavor with wacky combat animations and a vague story. It was exactly what I expected....until the I hit the last quarter of the game.

Every issue with the games movement, camera, combat, story, etc etc, comes into extreme focus when it comes to what is essentially a boss rush with really small combat arenas tossed casually inbetween. Monsters with ranged combat is fun, right? But not paired with their homing projectiles and your incredibly low speed, guaranteeing every stupid hit unless their hit detection runs into random bits of environment pieces. Now pair that low speed with a giant boss that teleports behind you and has an absolutely massive range with a homing kick if you get too close. SOUND FUN RIGHT?!

NOW IMAGINE FIGHTING A FINAL BOSS WITH A HOMING ATTACK AS ITS SOLE ATTACK WHICH YOU CAN'T RUN FROM CUZ YOU'RE TOO SLOW, CAN SUMMON MULTIPLE ENTITIES ON THE FIELD, AND HAS HOMING WORM THINGS THAT HANG FROM THE CEILING THAT STUNLOCK YOU IF YOU GET TOO CLOSE. REMEMBER HOW YOUR CAMERA HAS A STUN FUNCTION?!?! HAHA FUCKER IT'S USELESS NOW AND YOU HAVE THE SAME FIGHT AGAIN BUT WITHOUT AN AOE STUN.

The last boss singlehandedly brought my opinion of the game to an all time low. You know your combat is clunky garbage, why would you design the last portion around it? I was steaming mad and the promised epilogue did nothing to assuage it. Just more useless garbage with poorly used horror tropes. Terrible, 4/10
