A fun little game to tide us over until Hundred Heroes releases. The slice of life bits where you help rebuild the town are addictive as you want to find out where it goes.

This is reminiscent of Suikoden (the best game ever) and is a glorious, side-scrolling, side-quest-full RPG that has completely consumed my time. Love it!

To begin I want advise my review is based on this game via Steam Deck. The POSITIVE: fun and addicting as long as you don't mind traversing the same areas repetitively. You explore more and of the environments as you level. Great character building in my opinion. Great intro into the franchise if playing fresh for first time. The NEGATIVE: I crash 100% of time each gaming session so I highly recommend you save alot to not lose much game progress. Idk if it's related to heat of Steam Deck however I haven't had this issue with any other game I play on the handheld. If not for that I would tell you to get it immediately for Steam Deck.

16 hours for a wholesome town builder disguised as an action platformer RPG. Can't wait to play the sequel next year to see what's in store for the characters.

I recommend this if you plan on picking up "Hundred Heroes"

It's a great introduction to the world, some of it's characters, and an idea of whats to come in the main game.

Gameplay wise: I found myself loving the side scrolling action. It scratched a nostalgia itch i didn't know i had. However, even as a casual player, this is super easy/casual. Like, i didn't use a health potion until the final boss, on hard. I'm at around 29 hours, and 100% the game. That doesn't really ever happen to me ha Most will probably get that done sooner as you can fast travel to any section of the town at will (excluding dungeons) and i didnt mind manually running around most of the time.

Side quests do tend to be repetitive fetch quests, and A LOT of back and fourth. I do appreciate that completing them slowly accumulate to upgrading and repairing the town, (not sure if REALLY a spoiler, it's minor. buuuut just in case) and not just "extra lore, xp, and items" This is where the fast travel at will within the town is nice.

The music isn't bad. There's a few that are catchy and stand out, others are a bit generic. I did like how every upgrade to the town made the music more and more positive sounding

Personally, for $15, i really enjoyed this. Looking forward to the main game!

For those who played, what did you name your weapons?
Mine are:
1- Storm Axe
2- Dragon Slayer (sorry, i just had to)
3- Astra Galaxy

It's alright. It takes about half the game's length to start letting you loose in levels without making you run circles around the most tedious game quests before you can get another five minutes of exploring.
160 quests! But they're all "Get me 10 of this and 4 of that," or "Talk to this person in town for me. They're standing literally five feet away from me."
Mileage may vary, but I feel most players will find the beginning hours and this game structure, with these mind-numbing quests, to be unappealing. But if you like chores disguised as quests, then there you go.
Combat takes hours and hours to finally feel less restrictive, but even then, it still feels rather stiff. Link attacks are fun, though.
There's a mild amount of fun to be had--once you get pretty close to the end of the game--but this is not something I can actively recommend to anyone.

Great game for the cost - memories of FF earlier years come to mind for me! In the few hours played I smile a lot - just a happy game with some pretty interesting characters so far :) I look forward to continue the journey.

very worth it for the price. it's side scrolling with some beautiful scenery, not too beautiful like eg: ori, but really nice. the combat is simple action with some combos, you also get abilities like dash, block, etc, that adds to the mechanic. story is nothing great, more slice of life than adventure maybe, they are quite engaging tho sometimes the dialog can be.. uh,.

I'm already happy with the game < 2 hours in ; especially with the low price tag. The graphics are beautiful, the game is charming, and the gameplay is solid. Will add more info once I'm further in.

Pretty good game even though having to gain stamps is a little much. I like the way you can change characters easily and the combo attacks. This is a game that for me was worth a play through...

It was fun but fairly short. It is very repetitive and it is fairly easy to become OP with some basic grinding which is just how I like my RPGs.

I played this entire game through on the Steam Deck (more on that at the end), and while I know this sort of game is not for everyone, the idea of a dungeon grind town building (kinda) game, is pretty up my alley.

Graphics where nice, story was shallow but fine, didn’t hate the characters. No voice acting what so ever which is a bit odd in a modern game. Kinda felt like a mobile game to be honest (and I played it as such). The music was hit and miss, some songs where pretty nice, but ALL of the songs are too short and loop too often, so with the lack of voice acting, I found myself quickly muting the game often, as some of the songs get quite old.

Gameplay was not bad, controls felt mostly good, although only when you start unlocking movement upgrades. That first hour sucks. Combat makes up most of the actual meat of the game, and once you unlock Link attacks it feels pretty good. There are some moments that feel like BS and like the dev intentionally designed an enemy to piss you off by having just enough reach to hit you (Thunder/Frost jellies), and any of the fights against two wolves (which there are several…) tend to get frustrating as they can stun lock you (preventing you from switching characters). Those gripes aside however, combat feels fast and fluid, but never too difficult.

The ”town building” is mostly about upgrade, and you have no real say or control over how things get upgraded. I do wish there was more visual distinct upgrades for the buildings as you played, so it really felt like the town grew.

A note about the ending (Then some Steam Deck stuff the spoilers):

The ending is kinda abrupt and shitty. Like, you beat the last boss, the characters are like “We have one last thing to do!” it fades to white, goes “A few weeks later” with the main character eating lunch, then getting a letter from her dad “I’m proud” and BAM credits. That was a bit disappointing.
Then, beating all 160 side quests and completing the Black Stamp card… nothing changes, no cutscene like the other stamp cards, no music change, all you get… is the side quests repeat themselves. Which honestly felt a little insulting. (You get a steam achievement too I guess…). That was easily the worst part of the game.

As mentioned, I played the entire game on Steam Deck, game ran great, had no issues with controls, though I did find the text/font a touch small for my liking. To get a bit of extra battery life, I lowered the refresh rate to 45Hz, and the framerate cap to match (45 FPS). I also enabled Half Rate Shading, which had no impact on the visuals for this game (but also only saved like .3w of power), and I enabled TDP Limit, and found 8-9W was the sweet spot where I did not see any dips below 45 FPS, while getting 3.5-4.5 Hours of battery life.

Great game on Deck!

I'm not usually much of a platformer guy, but this was pretty fun. It's a small setting with a bunch of short, relatively easy quests in the style of a mobile game. It's low key, relatively relaxing grind that gradually builds up your town and your characters' strength and provides enough of a backstory to make the future RPG in the series a little more interesting. Solid graphics.

Excellent, fast paced action game. Bought it without knowing so much about it, because I felt the gameplay and the art style looked really good. After playing through it, and understanding more about the entire story, I'm looking forward to the JRPG that is coming up. I realize the gameplay likely won't be the same, but I really liked the writing for the characters and the story within this.

I will say, that overall, the game felt a bit easy. Understandably, a lot of that I believe is because I was grinding a bit more than I realized with getting materials. It made it very easy to obtain the upgrades as required for the heroes, and eventually it really was only the bosses that provided a challenge at times. Finishing the first time does unlock a hard mode, but you resume just before the final act, with other things to do. This leads to your characters still being fairly overpowered for the end content.

The critiques of the game you see are valid. Almost every side quest given by townsfolk are just fetch quests, and the difficulty of the game is very low until post-game (and even with the "hard" difficulty on, fights are still quite easy).
But, if you can get past that, Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising has some good writing and the fighting mechanics are actually pretty good. While we all wait for Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes to be released, this was a great little way to get introduced to some of the world.
With doing every side quest along the way, I beat the main story in about 19 hours, then got 100% achievements with a couple more hours put in. If you skip side quests, you could finish even quicker (though you won't unlock long combos). So maybe add this one to your wishlist and get it on sale.

Positives: Story line was good. Character growth is interesting. Worth the $10 I spent on it.
Negatives: Overly repetitive fetch quests. With a time of 24:15 on my save file I have done EVERYTHING there is to do. Not really replayable.

What is otherwise a fun game gets ruined in the mid game.

You start unlocking abilities that let you break the shiny rocks a few hours in. However these rocks are not marked on the map. Meaning a completion-ist like me is left re-exploring the map every time you get one of these upgrades. It is not fun to re-explore the same area 15 times(for side quests and then upgrades). I'd like to know where the rock is and go to it and explore the new area. Its not that bad when you get the first one! However it becomes tedious in the mid game when I've seen nearly 10 of them and have to remember where they all are on the map.

Also so many useless boring quests. Talk to X for X. It becomes so boring. This is like 50% of the quests. The Dialogue is way too long and happens much too often. I found myself skipping 95% of cutscenes. I can still track the story. The dialogue doesn't have substance. I would be more than happy to listen to it but they'll talk for minutes for a quest to talk to X for X. This is just boring and doesn't make the characters feel like they have any weight.

Mobility upgrades are mostly meaningless. Other than double jump. Towards the mid game enemies stop being tough and they just start spamming them.

Quests are not rewarding. The stamp book rewards are literally garbage until you do nearly all of them. Accessories are so menial that I feel like its just meh.

Some quests will not tell you even a general map they are on which is frustrating.

The game is fun but is just inflated with boring quests, terrible dialogue and cutscenes, and anti-fun exploration mechanics.

I would recommend it if they just added a better minimap. The other things are whatever. I can skip dialogue. I can skip quests.

First 5 hours can be exciting, but after that it feels soooo much repetitive for grinding material for quest, upgrading, etc.
But the game itself is kinda short so it doesn't matter much

Story:
Many foreshadowing for the upcoming Eiyuden Hundred Heroes and there are reference to places or characters that didn't get explained ever. In this game, your main task is to collecting stamps (read: building the town) by helping townspeople with generic kill or fetch quest while also uncovering the mystery in it.

Gameplay:
2D platformer with simple button, only button mash to combo your way to victory. While in town there is base building feature to improve combat stats or buying item. Up to 3 playable characters can be controlled with unique move set and unlocked by progressing the story.

Probably recommended if you are also planning to play the main game.

Eiyuden Chronicle Rising - 7/10

Playtime: 18H (3 Hour Postgame)

Synopsis:
A side story from main game, set in the town of New Nevaeh, a remote region of where the main game will be set. It is a poor rural town that mines ore. A few months before the start of the game, there was an earthquake, which lead to the discovery of some ruins nearby. It became lively, and many people who wanted to get rich appeared.
CJ, a young girl from a family who generation after generation has made their living as scavengers (ruin hunters). She came to the town to fulfill the "Coming of Age Ceremony" that has been passed down in her family.

Plus:
+A decent Metoridvania game
+Sneakpeek some character that will be appear in maingame
+Tight Control
+Town vibe change by completing sidequest
+Short and Compact sidegame
+You can name the weapons of main party and "specialty item" that can be transferred(?) to the main game

Min:
-80% Sidequest is fetch quest
-Post game is kinda grindfest, especially item requirement for max upgrade
-Some accessories is useless
-Hard Difficulty just makin enemy harder to hit and damage increased

Mixed:
=Postgame
=Elemental Lenses only give some minor buff
=You can brute force the Boss in hard difficulty because all of them have same pattern, only damage increased..

Very short and compact side game..
i hope the quality is much better in main game..

7.5/10? (average/good)
Its a good game mostly what you would expect.
The Wow: Combat feels good. Plenty of varied enemies. nice character designs. Great art design in general.
The ugh:
Too much back tracking while traversing the dungeons. Especially those long dead ends.
-Make use of CJ "dash" "jump" "dash" to get around faster.
Most of the quests are grind for x on repeat.
why does every game need an annoying fishing mechanic?

Gotta say no to recommend. I would recommend if either story or gameplay was really good of which both are pretty ehh. The exploration is pretty weak, growth of characters didn't feel interesting, I don't even believe the story had any hook at all to get you invested, and the entire game just feels pretty plain unfort. Also side quests are everywhere, normally I wouldn't mind this but as previously stated, gameplay was middling at best, not enough to want to do them and most are very repetitive.

Breoc

This is a neat game with a nice story. I really like how the crafting and upgrades work. I do not like how much grindy farming is required between side quests and material gathering for said upgrades. However, the action battle elements worked really well and I enjoyed how elemental stats matter (using runes to change weaknesses, attacks, etc).

Worth it on sale, or if you one day find yourself invested in the next game.

Controls are horridly sluggish and combat is fairly boring. For a title that touts itself as an "Action RPG", there's very little action. I doubt more time spent in the game would prove any different.

NeoPhoenix0
NeoPhoenix0

10/10 sprite work
fighting platforming and puzzles are average, nothing special or too difficult
the 3D environment can be a bit jarring alongside the more traditional jrpg sprite art but it does have its own charm and i was able to get used to it.

Many of the characters have very memorable scenes and personalities though some of them could use a bit more. overall though they do a pretty decent job of expressing the characters if you are willing to read. though some characters personalities do shine through on their sprite work. devs could try to find more varied ways to express characters personalities.

This game seems to be kinda like a very light metroidvania over a more traditional rpg. but the quest system runs more like running errand like side quests in a traditional rpg than a more natural metroidvania exploration system. the quests can get a bit old and samey.

overall the game is alright nothing to write home about. neat little side project. but the devs working on the main game do seem to be taking feedback into account and that game looks to be a different style so i look forward to what this upcoming franchise has to offer in the future, especially if it can scratch that itch that the series it is trying to be a spiritual successor to itched so long ago.

I'm exactly 2 hours in, the refund time limit.

The game has a few different areas. The first area is the forest. In the last 2 hours, I've completed the forest dungeon about 10 times because the game wants you to. After the 4th or 5th time, it sends you to the quarry. I've done the quarry about 5 times now. Each time you go, it's exactly the same. They keep you going back by adding tedious little changes, for example, the second time you go to the forest you have to gather wood; the third time you have to kill the boss; the fourth time you have to go gather stone; the fourth time you have to find an NPC's lost quest item, etc. etc.

It is pretty monotonous and linear. Side quests are kind of meaningless (help a guy collect mushrooms, help a girl get a wolf pelt.) You end up completing the quests inadvertently by just playing as you normally would. Being linear, there are no choices, just a story line that you experience as you play through the game.

In terms of challenge, I was surprised by how hard the first boss hit, but dodging all the attacks is very easy. 2 hours in and I'm about to fight the second boss of the game.

The rarity system in the game is 1 star to 5 stars. You start with 1 star weapons. Then you upgrade to a set of 2 star weapons. There are no choices, you are forced to upgrade and there is only one option. I presume that after I kill the quarry boss, I will be forced to upgrade to the 3* weapons and there will be no options to choose from.

The combat system is pretty straight forward. You are limited in your abilities. Game gives you double jump and slowly unlocks more combos in your chain of attacks as you upgrade weapons. idk... meh.

I think there are better games out there for $15.

That being said, the game is pretty.

*update*. second boss was really easy and slow and simple and not challenging. kind of disappointed.

You simply need to get it! What a fantastic introduction to the main Eiyuden game. I really found that Suikoden vibe while still being able to fully acknowledge that it's a different game. The gameplay is fluid, the graphics are cute (and prove that you don't always need top-tier 3D Unreal Engine 56 graphics when you got the rest properly done), the characters are lovable... No, really, if you wanna spend a good time with a chill action-RPG, you're at the right place :)

maschmelzer
maschmelzer

VERY disappointed. The pre-order and everything I read about this game said "made by the original creator of Suikoden". "This continues the legacy of Suikoden". And more. But this is NOTHING like Suikoden. The only similarity is that there are 100 heroes. Suikoden is turn based combat with up to six total characters in YOUR control. To compare this to Suikoden is a joke. Try again.

enjoying this cute little title despite its handholding at the start and a stop and go structure, there's always some plot reason to pull you back to town. It's probably a result of the small scope, the metroidvania aspects are very light, just some "doors" you need the specific key/ability for, but I'm enjoying it because the combat has a nice flow once you unlock the full party and abilities

Pros:
- The Attacks are fun to perform.
- Lots to do (but a lot of busy work in between)
- Metroidvania style maps are always fun to explore.

Cons:
- This feels like MMO busywork on a Single Player game.
- The story is lacking at least so far (13 hours in)
- Character design clash with everything else (I know its an art style, I didn't like it, now or on PS1).

Conclusion:
I bought this game thinking it would be a nice way to get into this franchise considering the next BIG Rpg is coming in next year. Sadly considering how much work they did on the story, it just made me unWishlist their next release. 13 hours in, One single town, I've delivered letters, messages, surveyed, interviewed all of the villagers, the rewards aren't good enough. If you measure your enjoyment with Playtime vs Price, this game is a good example as to why that's a wrong measurement.

Nice game for a fair price. The combat is fun and there is room for creativity and building. Nice exploration. The quests are more like fetch something inside some map. The characters are really fun, well developed and the history is also good. I don't think there is too much appealing for replay, unless you want all achivs.

Shockingly, despite being fan, I'm putting this on 'do not recommend'. The reason being precisely that I'm a fan.

This game, though fun in its own way, doesn't really stand on its own for its price tag. It's a metroidvania-esque 'extra' that introduces you to some characters who will feature in the main Eiyuden Chronicle game, offering you just a taste of the world you'll be immersed in in the future.

There are limited maps and all the side quests are basically iterations of fetch quests (over 160 of them to be precise) and the combat isn't particularly challenging without self-imposed restrictions.

Buy it if you're interested in dipping a toe in the EIyuden lore, otherwise if you're looking for a stand-alone game, this probably isn't for you.

Lovely game. Solid recommendation 7/10.

This little journey has really won me over.

Even though the story is short, or the game by itself is simple, it has quite a depth in its lore. I feel like its strong side is the character interactions, between the main parts and also with the NPCs. Most of the time it cracked out of me a chuckle or two, so it was nice.

The soundtrack is soothing, is not the big deal, but it does its job. And at least for me, they don't get annoying in any point. There are even a few tunes that I like.
Graphics are gorgeous, love the 3D background with the 2D models. Again, although elementary, they are lovely.

On the gameplay part, you have a bit of items customization, which is awesome and adds to the adventure. The combat by its own, although satisfying, can get repetitive. Which brings me to my only negative, a bit nick picky, that the game is mostly linear. Still, nothing game breaking experience.

So, yeah, I can't wait to see where the story will take us in Eiyuden Chronicles: Hundred Heroes. Which, for what I've seen, it looks like to be the main game, they're focusing on. There are more heros, better animations, it appears to be a more extensive game. I, for once I'm pritty exited to play it.

In summary, this was I pritty great view on the universe of this games. It's worth, both the money and time.

ᴯᴱ Fraylor
ᴯᴱ Fraylor

Alright, so I just completed this game at about 26 hours. This is with doing every side quest available throughout the entirety of the game, and maxxing out everything I could. So with that in mind my review will be a bit extensive but well researched.

Premise

First off, this game is a stretch goal from a kickstarter of another game: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1658280/Eiyuden_Chronicle_Hundred_He…

Considering that, this is actually really well put together. It's essentially the tale of a treasure hunter looking for hidden secrets in a mysterious dungeon called the "Barrows". You make friends along the way, as with any RPG, and it comes with your typical "the power of friendship" style story with all of it's themes and moral complexity (or lack thereof.)

Graphics:

They're interesting, in a world of extremely stylish 2D highly detailed sprite games out there, a genre I'm increasingly coming to like, this game sits pretty well up there visually. The 2D/3D mix is pretty well done, and much of the background scenery is really quite visually pleasing. It covers a range of biomes and does each of them pretty well.

The sprites are really quite good. There's a lot of detail there, but of course the monsters are largely pallet swaps throughout the game to fit the overall theme of the biome you're currently in. (Think Green Slime, Fire Slime, Ice Slime, and so on.) Not the first game to do this, won't be the last. Nevertheless the primary characters are well done and stand out without being World of Warcraft pauldrons level of over the top about it. Even the non primary characters were diverse enough that you don't really see any duplicates. It's a nice touch when I've seen some lazier work out there.

Story:

Run of the mill mild fantasy with a story that doesn't really push any boundaries or do anything different from the typical tropes you'd find in a JRPG. The side quest stories are laughable in terms of actual storytelling quality or breadth/depth, but I imagine given the fact there's like 140 of them, and again, it's a kickstarter stretch goal game, I'd say they did quantity over quality with the story aspects on the side quests.

Credit where credit is due, it does feel satisfying reaching a milestone in side quests and watching the town grow and improve. (Gave me big Suikoden 1 Castle vibes) so there is that.

I will say that I do hope there's at least some good references in the primary game, or that we at least learned some good world building information/seeing characters again that will make certain elements in the main game seem more interesting.

Gameplay/Animation:

It's pretty fun, the devs were generous with fast travel, and while the side quests are numerous, few of them actually take more than a few minutes to complete.

The movement is pretty wonky, and the people criticizing the "puppet style" movement are spot on. It is janky, though I think the combat doesn't suffer for it. To me it's purely an aesthetic thing. The combat is pretty fun. You can customize it to a point with different elemental attacks and what have you, though you will be utilizing one character far more than the rest. The combos are alright, easy to pull off and they have a sleep through it mode that even does the very easily timed combos. The ability animations are okay, mostly forgettable, though I do like that they made different animations based on every element used. I would say though grinding wise you really don't have to do much to beat this game, as it's very easy if you do even the bare minimum. Going out of your way to do all the quests and get all the upgrades makes everything a cake walk.

Other than that I believe they should have done more to even out the playing field when it came to movement abilities. You're easily only going to use one character to move around the map, honestly some people might not even pull out the other characters unless they have to for taking down character specific obstacles or during combo links. Though the game is so easy on the normal difficulty you can even use these non optimized side characters without relying on anyone else and easily slap bosses. I beat the last two bosses with one of the two side characters never using combos or other character attacks and didn't even have to worry about it.

Overall:

I think it's a pretty fun game. The gameplay loop isn't punishing but it's very easy by the end of it. It does let you reload to just before the last boss to finish up getting the rest of the achievements, and all of the achievements can be gotten in a single playthrough. There's also some stuff you can get before you're supposed to utilizing some of the janky movement abilities and swapping characters that's kind of fun to do, as well. Bonus points for a fishing mini game, too.

This one hurts...

I am a lifelong Suikoden fan and I am still excited for Hundred Heroes. However, Rising was an unfortunately underbaked, boring, and extremely short initial entry for this series. You feel powerful when you pull off the combos, but it always feels like overkill rather than necessary.

The Good: absolutely gorgeous graphics. nice main cast if even the writing doesn't always serve them. a few good tracks.

The Bad: mind-numbingly easy. Poor writing. Tedious and uninteresting fetch quests with mostly bland NPCs. 10 hours long with the majority of it spent doing the horrid side quests.

I so wanted to like this game, but it's not worth even the limited amount of time it takes to complete.

Just finished the game. I had fun, as it reminded me of older, simpler, more confined stories from the NES and SNES years. It's lighthearted, imaginative, and has a fairly well thought out world that, I'm assuming, we're going to be seeing me of in the future.

I will make some notes for the developers though, on the chance they might see this. Some criticisms and possible fixes. There will be spoilers, so reader beware.
1. The endless fetch quests got exceedingly tedious. Not because they are, in themselves, bad, but you stuffed the game to the gills with them. I understand that with a 2-D Platformer, there's only so much you can do without programming in new engines, but there is a reason why the SNES and NES games were shorter. They didn't shove THIS MUCH inane, tasteless tasks in to pad out the game.
Possible fixes. Cut down the quests that have nothing to do with progression. There is no reason these adventurers trying to save people and gain treasure would stop to help kids find playmates, or a child find a parent less than a screen transition away. Add more puzzle quests, maybe more Menhir-style puzzles to break up the monotony. Or more incentive to do Fishing, or more in depth Trapping. Something to think about for the main game.
2. The dismount of this game is terrible. I do like that there wasn't a token "Dad's actually ok" ending, but there was nothing to really sink your teeth into at the end. Random bandits appear despite not having any way to get there, a new named character shows up that we only just heard his name maybe 10 minutes ago and he's just HERE now and gone. And the final boss was visually interesting, but slow, weak, and lacking any sense of threat that you've been building up. I mean, we never even found out what this power hungry narcissist's NAME was, or why he wanted this power. Was he really just a "Am Evil Want Power" character? Because you went into backstories with so many other characters, and hinted at some with lesser ones, but the final boss get's that kind of treatment?
Fixes. It doesn't have to be much. Some of the recordings could have been that this Mage had been kicked out of other places, and is now obsessed with furthering his research to prove the other lands are weak. Maybe he was kicked out for being too extreme, even for the Empire. Maybe he was an agent sent out by some faction in the world and he was researching for a greater cause. Just SOMETHING to motivate him into gaining power.
3. The CONSTANT "Completed Quest!" "New Quest!" "GO HERE NOW!" notifications! They don't need to be so many and so in your face! When you accomplish something, the first thing on your mind shouldn't be "I'm got enough time to check my Youtube feed while this song and dance goes wastes my time." Main story quests can get that treatment. "Go to the bar and eat" should not.
Fixes. You want to highlight big events, not every event. Make the player feel like they accomplished something big. Just have the quest tracker flash a nice little sunburst when it changes to the next task.

Edit: I decided to go back into the game to finish the Black Task card missions, just to see what was there for the completion bonus...And there was nothing but MORE inane tasks. But not just more, but the SAME EXACT tasks I had just done. No fanfare. No final goal or party. Just more inane busywork. Come on people! When you put pepper on something, do you unscrew the cap!? Do yourselves a favor and hire a QA team. Some group of people to tell you "No. That's enough." You NEED it.

I didn't expect too much from the companion game to Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, but I gotta say, I'm pleasantly surprised, this has a lot more meat to its bones than I expected.

It's got quite a slow start, but gameplay is genuinely engaging once it fully opens up and you got your full party and mechanics. Lotsa cute little dialogue exchanges as well, makes me very excited for the main JRPG coming out next year!

This is the appetiser of what is going to be the successor of my GOAT game; Suikoden (particularly Suikoden I and II), and it's fun. It's a simple RPG, where most of the fun lies in the gameplay, and nice graphics, which we should be getting more of come the main dish; Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. Storyline and music is okay, but if this is the start, aren't you excited for what comes next?

Overall this game was pretty enjoyable for $15. The graphics are well done, the characters have personality, the writing is acceptable, and the combat was smooth albeit simple.

Now for what most of the contention is about: the grinding and the fetch quests. I didn't really mind that much but I can definitely see how it would rub a lot of people the wrong way. It got a little tedious towards the end trying to fill up all the stamps and upgrade your characters all the way.

But, for $15 bucks, it's worth it especially if it provides some setup for the actual full JRPG thats coming out later.

I'm going to give Eiyuden Chronicles: Rising a temporary positive review until "Hundred Heroes" releases and I have a moment to dig into that (the true game) and find out how "Rising" affects it.

So, I'm the type that played through the entire Suikogaiden series (Suikoden), beginning in the mid-1990s with the original title on PS1. I even suffered through Suikoden: Tactics and Suikoden: Tierkreis. Not having enough of the franchise or the formula, I also chewed my way through "Exit Fate" (it's excellent, check it out). So, when I heard of the Kickstarter that was going to be another one "those" spiritual successors with one or some of the original auteurs/leads/staff, I was on board!

"Rising" sort of reminds me of what Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes was pejoratively labeled after it's release: a $40 demo (though Rising is only fifteen bucks). This title feels, looks, and plays like *another* Unity-gussied, quasi-mobile trash port being hawked on every platform. It's essentially one very large drawn-out series of fetch quests to collect stamps and inadvertently complete a town full of motley interlopers.

I give this title a (tentative) positive review because, if you're like myself and have seriously been yearning for more Suikoden due to Konami being utterly worthless, then you can see as you play all of the cameos and potential tangential, self-referential nods to the greater gestalt. You can clearly walk past character sprites that are obviously not Bob or Sally the NPCs, but are (yet) named and portraited characters. *Some* characters obviously do make an appearance to a variety of magnitudes. All of this is tantalizingly agitating because you know it *has to* have some kind of profound tie-in to "Hundred Hearoes."

Nevertheless, we'll see. This could be pure bait 'n' switch pandering for folks like myself. Until Hundred Heroes releases, this review hinges on how Rising alters it. Just saying, it better not be some trivial bullshiite like when porting Suikoden 2 to Suikoden 3 was. Fingers crossed.

This is such a fun experience with a pretty solid plot, and semi decent mechanics. For the price, you're getting a fun simple side-scrolling loot loop that's pretty wholesome and feels easy to finish. At 11-ish hours, I'm already getting close to end game. It's so damn worth it.

Enfys Ellezard
Enfys Ellezard

A fun and simple platformer with action gameplay. In this game, you spend most of the time going back and forth between town and dungeon as more areas open up with some of them being just optional area for extra loots and for quests.

The biggest concern most people fuzz over is the quest design and how most of it is just a short and simple fetch quest. While you may not be going on a grand adventure for a 3-parter that will take 5 hours to complete, the quest design is fitting for what the game is about. Most of your quest givers are just plain and boring villagers that want their slight inconvenience dealth with.

That premise might sound boring for a quest but seeing the town becoming livelier and seeing each npc actually have their own agenda to deal with is a nice change. Even most of the generic looking npcs do have their own name and their own development when you accept these short quests that involves them over and over. So short and plain they may be, these quests and the dialogue and development provide really make you feel like you aren't just another adventurer in town anymore and is actually the new friendly neighbor who just moved in.

So while not a grand game to write a lot about, it certainly does what it needs to serve as the appetizer for the mainline game.

All-around this is a very good, but simple, action/platformer/RPG with crafting elements. It's simple in its design but the gameplay is very tight and satisfying, and the expansive list of quests and crafting options adds to the game's length in a positive way and even grants it some Metroidvania elements (in a sense) as some upgrades you build for your gear unlock new abilities that grant access to previously inaccessible areas. On top of that, the game is beautiful, with great spritework and gorgeous 2.5 environments. This is one of the best JRPGs in years.

My only really strong complaints are a) it is not very difficult, even on hard mode, a lot of enemies are palette swaps with a few ability tweaks, and c) the campaign is quite short for an RPG, but for the price point, it's definitely worth it.

So, to preface this- I was already invested in Eiyuden Chronicle going into this. The Suikoden series is my all-time favorite video game series, so when Murayama, Kawano and co. announced their spiritual successor, I was immediately on-board. This game is, to be clear, NOT that successor, but all the same, I wasn't going into this with a blank slate. I feel that's important to get out of the way before the review.

First, it's probably a good call to clarify what this game IS. Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is a companion game and prequel to the (as of the time of writing) upcoming JRPG Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. This game is meant to be a little teaser of what's to come in terms of characters, setting and tone, while carrying with it an entirely different mode of gameplay. It is not reflective of the entirety of Hundred Heroes. It was made by a separate studio (Natsume Atari) on a small budget, with an intentionally limited scope.

Even with all that said, I honestly didn't expect this to be as fun as it was. It's very, very simple metroidvania that's very much on the easy side, but there's a few more layers of complexity than I expected it to have. It never blew me away, but I was never bored, either. The gameplay starts out a little slow and clunky, but as you acquire various upgrades it becomes surprisingly intricate. No real complaints, I enjoyed it.

The part that I (and most people like me, who are eagerly awaiting Hundred Heroes) was more interested in, though, was the characters. I'm very glad to say that I found the characters showcased in Rising to show a lot of the charm and uniqueness that the best Suikoden characters did. The plotline was nothing amazing, but I grew to really enjoy CJ, Garoo and Isha, as well as the supporting cast who'll be returning for Hundred Heroes like Hogan the crocodile-man and Squash the bird-man. With the limited scope and simple plotline still being able to put on a good showcase for these characters, I'm very much looking forward to what Murayama and the other writers on Hundred Heroes will be bringing to the table.

All in all, for $15, this is a very enjoyable little experience. If you've any love for Suikoden and are interested in Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, you should absolutely get this (you'll even be able to transfer your save game into Hundred Heroes to get some bonuses!). Even if you aren't, if you're in the market for some lite metroidvania fare, you could do a lot worse than this for $15.

Hits a lot of Nostalgia feels in all the right places. Does this make it absolutely good? Well... I think it does a well enough job setting the tone of this new world as a prequel/companion game for the main game that is to come later. For all those who know of Suikoden, you will feel some familiarity while still standing on its new ground. It is a JRPG in ever meaning of the word- It plays casually, yet grindy. At the very least it plays smooth, its fun, a nice party-switch combat system, and i ran into no bugs from start to finish. Thats already a win from me, though it is sad to have the bar so low these days for games.

The story is short and admittedly dragged out over the course of lots and lots of mini fetch quests as you rebuild a town and uncover the secrets.. you know, the usual. It isn't badly done, and can be fun from time to time, its just an old formula. The areas are beautifully designed and the art design is very charming. Sound design is alright with the music being very chill-jrpg. I will say that I clocked in at finishing the game in 20 hours and I mostly only got time to play on my off days. It respects your time much more than other grindy titles, at least.

So if you're looking for a short and sweet JRPG that respects your time as an individual with less and less of it to game hard, and like jrpgs.. I can recommend this one if its on sale as a full price purchase felt a little bit stingy considering the content you do have in it. Try-hard gamers who live and breathe gamer-identity whom are allergic to 'hand holding' should probably just go sniff up another Souls-title instead. People being shocked jrpgs 'insult your intelligence' by having tutorials are silly people whom should be treated as such.

Surprisingly great game!

Not only is the story fun and engaging, the cast of characters are colorful and endearing. There's also a great balance between the more serious moments and the lighthearted and humorous ones.

The game play is also well crafted. Admittedly, it took some getting used to for me. Once I got the hang of it, it creates a fun game loop whenever completing missions and side quests.

The art style and animation are also very on-point. Renders and portraits have a very classic feel to them and the animation and pixel work is surprisingly fluid.

A great game overall, 9/10.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is maybe the most "fine" game I've ever played. It's not exceptional in really any way, but there's a certain charm to how the combat, animation, and music work together that makes it an enjoyable experience. The whole game essentially boils down to doing fetch quests and running through the same half dozen or so dungeons over and over, but the length is short enough and the combat is entertaining enough that it doesn't overstay its welcome.

Definitely accomplished its goal of making me more interested in the world of Eiyuden Chronicle, and I'm looking forward to the main game more now than I was previously. But just don't go into this one expecting anything you haven't already played before.

Despite my initial impressions Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is an enjoyable game to play, even if bogged down a little bit.

Combat is a core pillar of the experience and, despite my initial impressions, has a good amount of options that kept me engaged from beginning to end. Assists add a lot to fighting some of the tougher enemies, especially with the new attack moves acquired with upgrades, and are satisfying to utilize for big combos.

Story is nothing that will "wow" you but establishes a world that will no doubt be much more fleshed out in Hundred Heroes. Most of my enjoyment from the story came from the character writing which was spot on and had a nice amount of charm.

My biggest gripe with the game is the abundance of side missions that bog the game's pacing down in the early game stages, as well as in the later parts of the story when you need more money and materials to upgrade your weapons/armor.

I personally found the game, while having some merit, is not something I want to necessarily play again or even go back to for the sake of 100% completion.

As a whole, Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is not a bad, mediocre, or even great game, in the end I found it to just be good.

Let me first say this, I do plan on playing Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes and I have been a huge Suikoden fan.

If you are a fan of that series and feel apprehension towards whether or not it will feel the same, I think this game will assuage your doubts. Character wise, it feels similar to the way the Suikoden characters were written in the past. The world and implied politics also feel as if they haven't skipped a beat since Suikoden 3.

Gameplay is fairly simplistic. It is a fairly standard 2D action adventure game with not a lot of variance. It took me around 17 hours to get full achievements for the game and was a fairly easy game for someone who doesn't usually play this kind of game. It's also very easy to break the game by just raising CJ's crit as crits interrupt most enemy attacks and animations. The three characters do play differently but also are each only one attack (plus a charge attack) assigned to a single button each.

The music for the game is good, nothing groundbreaking, but well made and atmospheric for the locations.

Overall, it's a fine game that I would definitely recommend for two possible reasons. Either you want the story and to have the prelude to Hundred Heroes, or you are an achievement hunter. I think everything is solid for the game at the price and worth if if you have the interest for Hundred Heroes.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is a magical little town building metroidvania with heavy JRPG influences.

If you're a fan of games where you build up a town or settling from nothing, this game will resonate with you. I found the graphics very aesthetically pleasing, the music incredibly satisfying and relaxing, and the character design to at least be on par with the quality I would have expected from the original few Suikoden games (which Eiyuden Chronicle draws heavily upon for inspiration).

Add all of these great qualities to the low asking price, and this is an easy recommend.

The only downsides I can think of is that the game is very easy, and can be overly simple until you recruit your teammates. In addition, you will be doing a lot of fetch quests to complete optional content.

Other than that, really no complaints. Excellent game. Buy it.

Beautiful art, the environment feels so alive because many people are active.
The quests and dungeons were very repetitive, but somehow it didn't feel boring, maybe because of development of the city. Thank you Blue Guy for your hard work! XD

Maybe some drawbacks are, the game is too casual, too easy, you can beat the boss with a single combo session. The story is also very light, only helping the villagers.
This game is not for kids, right? I hope the main game is not like this, especially for the difficulty.
Dead enemies are still blocking until you stop attacking.
Also why there is no auto pick feature for the enemy drop, you have to wait until it completely disappear.

I think this game also introduces what kind of shop that will be available in the main game.
As Suikoden series, I hope we can also carry the previous game's 100% Save Data to unlock the secrets in the next game.
But I'm not sure because I didn't collect anything like 108 Stars of Destiny in this game, just complete all the achievements.

But still, can't wait for the main game!

A very lovely game that's easy to get into and fun to collect all the little easter eggs.
There's just enough hints at the inspiration for this series to satiate this old fan.
Beyond the main plot you'll find the many, many, NPC's that you come to get to know and run errands for end up expanding both the lore and the world (and your stats). Plus, if you like Metroidvania type games, this one is a good addition to that genre.

Galaleo
Galaleo

So after 100% the game I'm left with a solid feeling on this game but I want more from the world in general. I picked this up due to its connection to the coming Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes and I'm pleasantly surprised.

I usually do a big breakdown but the game is fairly short and simple with an enjoyable achievement hunt. Overall its a good game but it isn't groundbreaking either. If you're looking for the next Castlevania or Hollow Knight, this isn't it chief.

While enjoyable it does have it's issues, controls can be a little slow or unresponsive, the overall size of the world is small meaning you backtrack a lot, movement speed in town feels tedious after running around constantly, the enemies are 'varied' in the most generic sense (meaning each area has a copy of each creature just of a different element, not to mention most of the quests are just your typical fetch quests.

But for $15 it's a really solid game and quite fun. Not to mention it's got 50 achievements that aren't too hard to accomplish, meaning you achievement hunters could get a new ribbon in a little under 30-35 hours.

Can't way for Hundred Heroes!

Well Then

I hear there was a kerfuffle with the release of this game but having played through it I have faith the main game will deliver when it comes out. Was a fan of the music, combat, dialogue, and the town and world building (having played the Suikoden games before these last two really scratch that itch). It also reminds me of the Ys series if that has any value, mainly because of the characters and action/exploration aspects. The only downside I think worth mentioning is that the optional quests would be virtually unplayable if not for the fast travel (they'd really test your patience), but there's some fun to be had from optimising quest routes. Overall, definitely worth the price.

EC/R is a great RPG in 2.5d format. It which follows the story of a young agile adventurer as she shares exploration and combat with a tank and a mage. Fighting is real-time, one at a time, with a sort of tag-in capability so characters can follow-up to each other's attacks. What stands out from it being a simple level crawl is a spirit of delight and wonder. Two virtues that can often be sacrificed for difficulty. As you discover and grow the town where you reside slowly grows as well. Rather than erupting quick jump points. Thankfully, the plot manages to sidestep RPG tropes in lieu of novel ones. Granted there can be back tracking as well as re-spawning monsters, but it doesn't tire the game play.

After finishing the game, I can finally put an end to my misery… Sadly, I don't recommend this game. Don't get me wrong, I am psyched up about Eiyuden chronicles Hundred Heroes as I am a big-time fan of the Suikoden franchise that inspire the game.

But then Eiyuden chronicles: Rising is a spin off, and a poorly executed one. I’ll be brief:

First of all the game feels like a mobile game (graphic and gameplay wise..).

Then there is the writing… Oh boy that’s bad, the story is virtually nonexistent, the characters are generic.
Comes after that the game’s length: I finished it with 100% achievements in 23H, that’s Okish for the price, but then 90% of the game is.. SIDEQUESTS. Yup, didn’t count them all but >150 of them, all more boring fetching in the 5 dungeons of the game, and a LOT of backtracking...(Oh, and did I mention the writing ? because the sidequests don’t really bring substance to the world, I ended up skipping dialogues of the lase 30 or so…).

Next, the game is surprisingly easy, only one difficulty mode (you unlock “hard” mode after the end of the game, and its still quite easy, as your party is already leveled up..)

For the good parts… The lore of the game seems fine (even if underdeveloped in this game, but then again, a spin off); even if its not really detailed in this game, it keeps my hopes up for Hundred Heroes. And... that's it for the good part..!

In conclusion, I just think the game was targeted for children (writing / difficulty / gameplay), that would be an amazing game for them (for a first approach of the RPG genre).

You could always buy the game to support the devs for a quality Hundred Heroes release (recommending a buy on sale).

A very fun game, characters are fun, story is interesting, and doesn't overstay its welcome.
Took me about 20 hours to 100% the game, and I enjoyed it the whole time.
goes to show the benefits of a game made focused on a single solid loop.

Welp. If you're a fan of the Suikoden series bet you'd love it even thought it's just a side game and don't mind the being the errand (boy/girl) which commonly happens in all games go buy it.

If you love side-scrolling Metroidvania's like Castlevania, Bloodstained, and/or Dust: An Elysian Tale you'll love this game.
This is probably gonna go down as one of my favorite side-scrolling exploration games.
It has a massive variety of quests and treasure and enemies in the game, and the game has a handful of unique but easy to master mechanics that make the game fun and fills it with diversity and excitement.
I really love the characters and the world, and it has such a diverse variety of characters from Humans, Elves, and Beastfolk inhabiting the world.
Plus the Lore of the world being built upon the ruins of highly advanced civilizations is pretty interesting.

Good ARPG game, that provides a bit of additional lore to the upcoming EIyuden Chronicle.

Fun game, story line was great. It was immersive enough for me to continue wanting to clear the achievements after clearing the normal mode and heading into the hard mode. Though the hard mode was kind of tough if I did not managed to enhance the equipments to an ok state.
Overall, I would recommend this game to people who loves JRPG and I cant wait for the next release of this game.

Nice little game. Like the story and characters. Combat is simple but fun. Art has some Vanillaware charm in it.

Only bought due to devs being involved in Suikoden. This game is pretty far from Suikoden, and only resembles it in aethetic and sound. No story, meaningless tasks, only a handful of repeating areas...should be just a free-to-play teaser.

It is short, but wholesome.

The plot for the main game briefly seen in last part of this side project.

Gameplay actually really nice and cool despite it is not a turn based game. No rune either only lens that add fire, ice, lightning damage to normal attack.

Very easy combat but nice and warm story. Can't wait for the main game and see the correlation between this side game.

I'm one of those guys that have Suikoden 2 as their best games of all time. So please bear with me if I get too sentimental or nostalgic while giving this review.

So for me Eiyuden Chronicles: Rising is not a perfect game. It has it's flaws on some of it's controls and the sidequest/crafting/town building cycle is bare bones. There are times that it gets tiring to play, but what made me continue playing this game is the story. The world building elements is really good and you know that feeling that this game is made to build before the release of the main game.

Did it succeed in doing so? I would say yes!

I have a strong feeling that the main game is going to be a definite banger because it would not take time to explain a lot of things in its world because Rising already gave us a taste of what the lore is of the world. It introduced us to the concept of rune lenses, characters that would be vital in the story and much more.

CJ, Garoo and Isha are some of my favorite characters in the story and I can imagine them being on my main party on my playthrough of the main game. They've succeeded in making me attached to them as well as other potential characters (well it's too obvious because of their portrait avatars). I'm definitely excited to have the Rising advantage when it comes to recruiting them :D

The HD-2D presentation is so good. It's vibrant and alive. You do not feel that you are playing in a lifeless world.

The upgrading, crafting to purchase, swap chaining mechanics are really good.

It's definitely a must play for suikoden fans if you want to squeeze every bit of lore from the game.
I highly recommend it if you like metroidvania games with jrpg elements.
I do not recommend this game if you do not like grinding and repetative side-questing.

Oh and yes there is a hard mode of the game when you complete the game for the first time. I'm saying this because some review sites haven't done their job and play the game all the way through first before making and milking the article.

Very engaging storyline, good game and memories. However a bit too focused on fetch quests

I 100%'d this game on PC pass, but felt compelled to buy it here and sing its praises. Takes somewhere around 25~ hours to complete, it's a bit on the easy side (hard mode unlocks at post game), has a vibrant cast of characters which I ended up liking quite a bit, the questing system for stamps is fun since some upgrade the town/shops, and the combat is simple enough yet hectic to warrant me coming back for bits and pieces at a time for full completion.

Again I wish normal was harder, given I never even used a single healing item due to the upgrades and quest completions, but it was overall a great little romp that makes me incredibly interested in the bigger Eiyuden Chronicle game that was kickstarted.

Honestly I cant really recommend this game. Its not terrible, it does some things right like giving the characters personality and giving old areas much needed new quirks like enemies where enemies weren't before but thats about it. The game is super repetitive, the controls are a bit laggy, the characters look and play like a flash game and there is about no real difficulty to it. Charging for this title was a bad move in my opinion and I feel like it would have been better off as a free game for promotional purposes. Still looking forward to the proper game Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes and I want to support this in order to support that game and Suikoden overall but $15 is way too much for whats just a series of fetch quests and shallow combat with little less to offer.

At first I didn't know if I would like this game but after spending about 9 hours with it so far I'm really starting to like it a little more. It's like playing a vanillaware game. Just a lot of back and forth fetch quests so you can rebuild this town but I really like they added a teleport system to get around faster. Soundtrack is a little "meh" and I'm hoping for some better tracks in the main game when it releases. I'd give this game like a 7.5/10. Just fun enough to keep playing but I would probably never replay the game. I also hear this game with full completion will take you about 20 hours so not bad for the price.

Although easy to play (maybe a difficulty setting earlier than post game would help), I thought this game was fun. Would not recommend to those who dislike grinding for items as this game can become repetitive being told to constantly fetch an item or two for townsfolk. One of the key things I enjoyed in the game though.
