- Surprisingly engaging story for a world with 2.5 living characters, one of whom is a silent protagonist; the game sells you on the mystery of the world and its fall (through finding texts & reading the dead minds of bosses), and the few plot beats that do involve Lily are great. Some of the writing could be better, but the overall narrative was compelling.
- Tons & tons of quality of life features. There's a save point right outside of every boss room; fast travel unlocks super early; the minimap tells you if you've found everything in a room; every cutscene is rewatchable & every boss fight replayable. There's a lot that's been done to make this game less frustrating than other metroidvanias.
- Gameplay is a mix of exploration + looting & platforming combat. Environments are varied, and there's plenty to find in every nook and cranny. Combat is generally interesting; the core mechanics are good, if nothing new, and there's a ton of customization--dozens of different skills & items that can be equipped, most of which have unique effects. However, a lot of actual fighting does boil down to "press dodge when you get attacked".
- Game is medium difficulty with a couple of spikes; it's challenging enough to keep you invested.
Thumbs up overall!

Fun gameplay. Bosses are tough but fair. Great music. Story is kind of meh but atmosphere is good. I especially like how this game respects your time with the map and making it clear when you've completed an area.

Its pretty good, but cant recommend it for the price. The art and music amazing, story is decent, but the actual gameplay felt bad. For a metroidvania/soulslike combat is core to the genre and they missed the mark. It feels clunky and slow, never really found a rhythm to combat like I would expect from a game like this. The boss fights are either too easy or frustratingly tedious. The ending was also pretty unsatisfying. I know there's more to this game to go back and explore but I don't think its worth the effort.

Wait for a sale. You might love it, but if your expecting something on par with Hollow Knight or Ori and the Blind Forest you will be disappointed.

This is an amazing game, one of my favorites (I'm very picky when it come to games). I went into this without knowing what to expect, was this going to be a good game or a horrible one? I ignored the reviews and started playing the game, it was beyond my expectation.

-hours to complete 100%: 43 hours
-The story: great story line
-The game mechanics: smooth and enjoyable.
-my rating (from 1-10): 10

It has the right amount of action and the story is quite good in my opinion.

The game mechanics is what you would see in dark souls/demon souls, you will have to read the movements
of the bad guys and use them to your advantage.

The story is there if you want it, there is a way to skip it (just by pressing esc button) but I would recommend reading the notes and dialog that the game present, I promise you, you will be hooked.

It's a recommendation from me, not going to spoil it for you, but it's a ride worth riding.

Amazing game with stunning visuals. If you are a fan of metroidvanias don't sleep on this game. Buy it, play it without guides and experience the journey on your own. You will love it.

This game is one of the best games that i have played since since Hollow Knight, even to say that i had a better time playing this since hollow knight but i will that it is shorter but that does not detracts form how beautiful, sad, and heart warming this story was too experience. Highly recommend it to anyone who like these types of games.

Only played Indivisible and this game of its kind but it is truly a masterpiece, the ost, the visuals, the gameplay overall, 10/10, definitely give it a go

A stellar metroidvania with some great exploration, ridiculous combat variety, and a very good feeling of progression. Mili hits it out of the park yet again with the music, with the classic Mili piano and some great somber tones. If you are looking for a heavily atmospheric metroidvania this should be at the top of your list.

Ender Lilies is a genuinely great experience, combat is varied with many options to pick from, the soundtrack is amazing, the story is one that'll potentially bring you to tears if you've been paying attention to it with 3 relatively easy to obtain endings and no missable achievements(as long as you don't go around spending your resources on everything you have), certain parts can be quite difficult but with simple strategy you can go through everything, the map is a lifesaver for anyone wishing to 100% it by marking areas you still haven't finished and any routes leading to places you haven't explored yet

in conclusion: 10/10 would spend hours of my life trying to jump on some inaccessible spot i still don't have the power up to reach again

Pretty fun. The dodge, hit and punish fits well in a decently implemented metroidvania. The "movesets" offered by the spirits allow for various playstyles as well as mix-matching to combat ruthless enemy compositions.

The story is fine enough. It isn't ground-breaking but it serves well enough and has multiple nice enough conclusions.
The foundations are there, but I feel this game could possibly lean further into the metroidvania stuff in terms of the progressive mobility and powers.

Some of the bosses will be simple for those who are already versed in souls-like combat. They could be better designed.

8/10; Got some flaws, but it is pretty good.

If you are in the market for a very solid Metroidvania experience, look no further than Ender Lilies. The combat is great too. Just difficult enough to get the blood pumping, but not maddening. It's worth your money.

I found the story interesting and enjoyed reading every piece of lore to fully flesh out the world.

I 100%'ed the game at about 24 hours.

This game surprised me. I didn't know much about it other than I though the art and combat looked unique. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised and look forward to finishing this gem! If you're even mildly curious about it, pick it up. Soundtrack is great, combat is innovative, and the graphics are stunning. Truly a wonderful game and I'm only a couple hours in with only 3 bosses under my belt. This game is great.

Pretty good little Metroidvania. The best part of the game is the presentation and art direction. I love the spirit, enemy, and area designs. The aesthetic of this game is top notch. Music is also very nice, good at complimenting the mood of whatever area or situation you're in, I almost never notice music in games so the fact that I was actually listening to the level and boss themes surprises me. Story is depressing but I don't wanna spoil anything, but I personally love the feeling that there is no real hope for anyone in this dead world. Gameplay is pretty easy ngl but it is interesting. It's very cool that you have to summon a spirit to attack, parry, or sometimes even traversal. You have to consider your spirits position in a fight more so than Lily. Lily herself never attacks and this helps to cement the feeling that you are defenseless in an unforgiving environment. If you like a dark fantasy aesthetic I'd suggest at least giving the game a look, there are better Metroidvanias gameplay-wise but this one happens to have designs I enjoy with a world and story I wanted to learn more about.

Really fun game. If you've got that Hollow Knight itch, you can play this.
-Has a slow start, combat feels clunky at first, but stick with it! You will gradually be presented with many choices to build the moveset which fits you best.
-Soundtrack is a nice spin on the usual formula. It makes for some breathtaking, touching moments, such as getting mowed down by a boss while a sad piano plays. Unfortunately, it also can lack impact in moments of need.
-An extremely important quality of life feature is their map display. It shows when you have completed (as in, discovered all secrets/collected all hidden items) each segment. This is HUGE. I cannot stress enough how comfortable this made exploring feel. With this feature I could know when to stop exploring certain areas, and where to properly come back later. It also made me want to actively explore everything and 100% the game - and I'm not even a completionist!
-Art is very good, cutscenes are beautiful. Unfortunately I didn't enjoy very much the writing on them. The writing on items and dialogue overall is just ok, I expected something more, maybe lacks punch due to translation issues.

Story 10/10
The story and setting are told to you in pieces, expecting you to connect the dots from everything ranging from background details, items descriptions, and small lore pieces scattered across the game. It is a fun way to tell the story, and fits well for this game.

Gameplay 9/10
Enemy AI is well crafted, albeit simple. This should not be taken to say the enemy is easy to fight, but one who fights any enemy long enough will learn attack patterns and behaviors to the point of being able to take apart any previously frustrating enemy. Bosses are amazingly crafted with perhaps two exceptions. However, the controls for keyboard are very cumbersome. I would recommend a controller, but keybind remapping helps immensely, and I recommend you do so if using a keyboard.

Level Design 8.5/10
The levels are outstanding in providing both a challenge to progress, as well as exploration for the player that is interesting and rewarding. The game teases alternative paths from the beginning that the player has to find the solution to later on, encouraging backtracking every now and then to explore new paths in older areas. There are some problems with design at times however, as some exploration puzzles and secrets require unreasonably precise movement, along with particular abilities and equipment loadouts to make. Few of these affect the main story and areas necessary to it however.

Graphics/Artstyle 10/10
The game's environments, characters designs, enemy designs, and more all do a perfect job of selling the game's story and atmosphere. With a game that relies as heavily on visual storytelling as this, the visuals play a much more important role and they do no disappoint in that regard.

Audio Design 10/10
The music throughout the game compliments each zone perfectly. From good instrument composition for the themes of a given level, to tone of the music that complements and sets the mood for everything from exploration to boss fights. Even a lack of sound when needed to create a sense of foreboding.

Overall 9.5/10
An amazing breakout for the developers. The game plays well with few hangups along the way. Though a bit short in playtime for some, every moment of it is amazing and worth the praise I give it. A must-buy for any fan of Metroidvanias who enjoy a focus on combat and amazing visual and audio design.

Finding Notes and completing 100% is challenging, but the hidden backstory is good. There's multiple endings and you can get them all. Its a dark world and you are the hope.
If you like Chaos Legion (PlayStation 2), you will like this game too.

Really enjoyed my time with this game. Went through everything to get the secret ending. Combat is very fun. The game is pretty tough but fair. There's also a substantial amount of platforming, as with most other games in this genre, but controls feel good enough that it's challenging without being frustrating

The art style is beautiful. The world is intriguing and I felt the need to do a ton of exploring. The music is probably the thing I'm the most critical on, but that's just my personal taste. I'm sure others will love this soundtrack, but for me it was too mellow (though I totally understand it fits the world and there are a couple of tracks I really enjoyed).

This game is 110% worth buying. If Hollow Knight is an S-tier Metroidvania, this game is certainly A-tier.

bought this on impulse and played 90% of it on my steam deck. never really played any metroidvania games but really enjoyed this. story is told in a similar way to dark souls - you just get dropped in and pick up bits along the way. very atmospheric and great music. combat and exploration really picks up once you start unlocking more stuff. took me about 16 hours to 100%.

also - someone can probably write a thesis on bad game design using the last dungeon as a reference. game takes a nose dive once you get there.

This is my first game to reach 100% achievement.
Reasonable difficulty and appropriate achievement design.
Normally a exploring game like this is even hard to reach 75% achievement even you've gathered all items in the game.
There are usually many unneeded farming check points.
Other developers should learn Ender Lilies about this design.

This is game is HARD. No getting around it. But slowly and steadily you get stronger and gain more abilities that allow you to figure out separate play styles that allow you to progress. It's frustrating, but not ridiculously so, and the boss battles actually feel rewarding. The game itself is somber and its story has no happy thoughts to spare. And HOLY **** is the music beautiful.

I think this is the best metroidvania on the market, beautiful visual style, thorough and engaging gameplay with 100's of aproaches to combat, maneuverability and build crafting, enchanting world with intricate lore and worldbuilding. This game has a lot, don't miss out on this.

Nowhere near as good as the reviews here would make it out to be. Ender Lilies is a very average metroidvania which ticks all the boxes but has no identity of its own to speak of.

Better off avoiding this and playing Hollow Knight/Bloodstained etc.

TeoL

Sadly, I don't think I can recommend Ender Lilies. I loved hollow knight and was looking for other metroidvanias, and this one looked really promising! The artstyle is gorgeus and I also love the music. But what is bad about it?

Well, first off, the combat is.. eh. You have a lot of things to choose from, and that is nice, but the combat is a bit clunky. For example you can't swing up or down.

Second, the game is a bit TOO detailed, to the point where it makes it unclear what is background and what is foreground. It makes bosses more confusing to fight and not as enjoyable. I also had a hard time finding where I was supposed to go at times, because the doors were part of the background...

Third, the rooms don't feel unique, and feel as if they are stretched out and overcrowded with enemies just to extend playtime. The enemies are annoying and most of the time the best thing to do was just cheezing them with range.

Overall, I felt for the most time that I was playing this I was annoyed rather than actually enjoying the game. But the art made it bearable.
I might return to this later, but for now.. Nah.

TL;DR
Beautiful graphics, but annoying to play.

Gorgeous lock-and-key exploration game with a beautiful tone that is both melancholy and hopeful, and the soundtrack is fantastic. Some of the boss fights are frustratingly difficult, but I'm glad I stuck with it.

Skyleaf
Skyleaf

Very good Metroidvania Soulslike with unfortunate map UI design which makes hitting dead ends early on very common. Otherwise easily a 9.5/10.

鬼翼
鬼翼

As a 2D ARPG, the difficulty of this game is fair. Therefore in the later stage, there are basically only a few common skill combinations. The fault tolerance rate is also very high, there is no challenging Boss, as long as you die a few times and become familiar with his actions It will become a good fight.

The attacks of different bosses are quite fun. A little disappointment is that the last Boss is easier than some of the previous ones.

There is still some ingenuity in the level design. You need to use different actions to get to a special place to get some materials. There are enough online guidelines, but you may still need to jump a few times to get it done. The good thing is even if you fail to jump, you do have not to start over from a far place, which is quite good.

The game's soundtrack is very nice, and you will immerse yourself in the game unconsciously. Sad that there is no voice in the dialogue. If there is, the sense of immersion will be better.

When I wrote the review, I obtained full achievements. I didn't open NG+ for 100lv. Basically, I got the experience of trophies and started to carry them all the time. I hit 100lv while fighting and dying along the process, and I don't need to farm at all.

RUOKFren
RUOKFren

A fair and fun Metroidvania with some Souls-like reminiscent mechanics. Wonderful art direction and sound design, though gameplay takes a little while to catch up. Combat starts relatively simple, but expands out nicely as you reach the later stages. Platforming is easy and mostly straightforward, save for a few optional locations and the ending sequences. Not nearly as complex or difficult as games like Hollow Knight, but certainly worth a playthrough if you like Metroidvanias or the design catches your eye.

Outside of the Overwhelmingly Positive Steam rating, this game seems severely underrated - or at least not popular enough. It's easily one of the best metroidvania games I've ever played. Amazing music and art, great fluid gameplay, great bosses and combat. Just challenging enough without being frustrating. 5/5

This game is..... PHENOMENAL! A Metroidvania game with a SoulsBourne theme and ambiance. It was one of those games that when I finished it I sat back, enjoyed the ending, and gave me that bloody hole because a good thing was ending lol Honestly glad I played it even though it was after I've played Bloodbourne, Darksouls 3, and Elden Ring. Can't say it enough. If you liked those three titles then try this game!!

Overall a great Metroidvania!
Nice instrumental OSTs and BGMs, suit the ambience.
Difficulty is not that high, non souls like difficulty.
The plot is great, though don't expect some mindblown plot twist or whatever those kind of things.
Definitely try it when you have a spare time.

I only found Ender Lillies because of a lucky advertisement on the Playstation store not long after its release on consoles (then obviously ended up buying it here as well). And I'm so glad I did... this game is not juts one of the best Metroidvania titles ever, but simply one of the greatest games period. It has everything I've wanted from the genre:

- an endearing art style. I'll admit, the first exposure was the title art then the preview video and the art style alone had me interested

- the music is among the best in gaming. It has a surprising range from haunting, to weirdly playful, to melancholy, and all the way to creepy. The soundtrack alone is almost worth the price.

- the combat is amazing and surprisingly fluid once you start gaining abilities to choose from. This isn't like some recent Metroidvanias that lock you into one play style. Now, caveat: the feedback in combat is not quite like many other games but that is because of the nature of the character and how she actually contributes to combat. Some have not liked this, but I personally found it a nice little twist that doesn't negatively impact anything.

- bosses: the mini bosses and bosses are challenging but fair. You will die, but it never feels like a chore unlike some recent games that think difficulty must be ramped to the highest degree even when it crosses into being completely unbalanced or unfair. I never once had to take a break because of frustration. Also, some of the atmospheric setup then the music changes make for some epic encounters.

- exploration, while not as wide open as some, is still quite fun. The world building only adds to that and the respect of the developers toward the player with regards to the map and backtracking actually make it rival some of the more wide open games just by cutting down on sheer tedium.

- speaking of backtracking... thank you devs for respecting my time and eliminating corpse runs, placing checkpoints outside of the bosses, and giving fast travel to the player early on. This element is one the major reasons I do not rate some highly praised games all that high.

- the map: while some do not like its simplicity, it gives all the information that you would need to find your way around. And the rooms changing colour upon completion (finding everything) is an addition that should be in every single Metroidvania from now on. No more wasting time scouring a room that has nothing else in it.

- the story and lore: while many in the genre have some environmental storytelling and lore, often vague thanks to the influence of Dark Souls, Ender Lillies decided to add to its ambience and environment with lore that is much more transparent. Then it actually decided to do what many recent titles seem adverse to... a story that isn't some obscure, half written "puzzle that lets the player fill in the blanks and guess!". It gives you a definitive journey that doesn't leave you guessing and trying to piece together intentionally vague lore to merely end up with a theory on everything that is happening. Thank you Ender Lillies for bucking that Soulslike trend. It rarely works.

- replayability: simply because of the amazing world and story, I find it replayable to the point I've bought the game multiple times across various platforms and have completely it four times. But, Ender Lillies has a customisable new game plus that lets you heighten the challenge as well as a boss rush mode that keeps track of your best times.

- the negatives: for me, there is really one obvious negative... the final zone. While I don't mind the traversal aspects that may annoy some, there is a clearly a damage spike from the enemies and one notable enemy that should have been polished a lot more. It only causes a brief annoyance, but it is one of the few times that the game had a hiccup in terms of balance.

All in all, Ender Lillies is a fantastic game well worth the initial 15-25 hours the first run will take most players. Hopefully we get a sequel or a spiritual successor that hits as high as this. One of the few games I've thought about giving a perfect score. Personally I feel it deserves it, but the negative is enough of annoyance that, like every game, makes a more "objective" score of 9.5/10 the reasonable take. Highly recommended.

Another Metroidvania, whilst I await Hollowknight Silksong. Great art and music, the platforming is lacking to nonexistent. In all honesty, I had never been a fan of metroidvania games, so I don't have many or any comparisons for Ender Lilies when it comes to the design or gameplay mechanics. I just really, really like the game. The soundtrack, the atmosphere, the story- I may just be an empathetic crybaby, but reading through the notes and experiencing everything unfold made me tear up once or twice. I adore everything about this game, and it has quickly become one of my top 5 favorites. It would be lofty for me to hope for a sequel or a prequel to Ender Lilies, but I truly enjoy everything this game offered.

Plus I love the soundtrack??? I'm obsessed with it, the main theme actually encouraged me to pick up the piano again.
TL;DR 10/10 I love the depressing atmosphere and the little girl trying to save the world

The best metroidvania-souls like I've ever played. I've enjoyed Hollow knight, Salt and Sanctuary, Vigil and a whole of other indie types. There is just something about the presentation, options in combat, progression, art- all of it that just hits for me. I will second that it takes a little bit for the game to find it's footing in the beginning, but it is well worth learning curve. I have bought this game for all of my friends genuinely hoping to push for a sequel to be made.

It was difficult towards the end but I would never say that it crossed the threshold of being TOO difficult for me. I kind of bought this blindly wanting to try out the metroidvania genre, my only experience of difficult 2D games being modded terraria, and was quite a fan of it to be honest. The story and world building were pretty good too. The only complaint I have is that I started a new game plus after beating the game to try out the boss rush mode, but forgot to get one of the endings in the normal mode first (because I wanted 100% achievements). Turns out new game plus is waayy harder, and you can't switch between a normal save and newgame+ save, and I don't have it in me to play through the entire game all over again just for that one achievement. Other than that though, the game itself was nice.

Cootadude
Cootadude

Regardless of what Steam says, at the moment I wrote this review I already have 20+ hours (offline gameplay).
First I want to mention that the Game rarely has any bugs if any at all, you do have some 'funny moments' with the A.I but it's not often & I recommend playing this game with controller as the keyboard controls are very awkward (but you can change controls to your liking in settings).
I haven't played a game as good as this for a really long time, everything from visuals, sound design, & gameplay are amazing.
The Boss fights are really fun & rewarding, even though some of them took 5+ tries they we're really fun & it only made the victory much the more sweet. The Game is balanced really well, it is challenging but not to the point where it feels unbearable, it always is just right.
The Story & Lore are also a strong point in the game, the more I know about the world the more ominous it becomes as you begin to understand what actually happened.
They took really good care on the Music & Sound design, when you are in water it will sound like you are in water, when sounds should echo it does so in-game. & the Music is always done just right to bring out the right feelings.
The Game already pulled me in at the main menu, they knew that "little is much" they only had few effects & music & yet it did the job right.
So overall this is one of my favorite games & I highly recommend it to everyone looking to play this. You won't be disappointed.

Summary:

A very solidly put-together Metroidvania that doesn't do much by way of innovation in terms of mechanics or story, but utilises what it has efficiently to make a consistent, enjoyable exploration experience that doesn't overstay it's welcome. Reasonable asking price if you're an enthusiast in this genre, otherwise a good choice to pick up on a sale.

Things worth noting for your personal preference:

    • Story is very minimal, most information in the game comes from bits of lore that you collect, or from post-boss monologues (if you find such things melodramatic it may be difficult to immerse yourself into the story, I personally find that the overall tone of the game is set very well by the art style and soundtrack but your mileage may vary in this specific aspect).
    • If you enjoy lore hunting in other games, something this game does well is that the collection of lore as a whole feels very cohesive, probably owing to a limited scope: most everything you need to know about the motivations and history of the characters involved in the setting is available in a satisfying amount, which I think endears to those characters surprisingly effectively for the amount of actual presence they have in the plot. There are also many examples of 'unspoken' environmental storytelling throughout the map that help sell the impact of the history on the story of the game.
    • There is an obvious and omnipresent tonal focus on somberness and tragedies of various types, if not to your taste be aware. Obvious comparisons to games such as Dark Souls or Hollow Knight especially, though with no focus on NPC questlines unlike those examples.
    • Gameplay has very little to no resource management, there's no currency or item system in the game which means that your focus is exclusively on progression: as such there's no 'death run' mechanics or backwards progression of any kind besides returning to a previous checkpoint that you always set yourself.
    • Every boss, including minibosses, reward you with the spirits that are the main selling point of the game, essentially being your weapons, moveset, and spell list in one combined mechanic. These feel well balanced enough to reward both experimenting with new options and settling for the ones you feel most comfortable using (in fact, I used the move given by the first boss for the entire game!).
    • The game is not only relatively easy to 100%, it's also satisfying to do so, with no obscure challenges - the in-game map tells you outright which rooms you have not completed. There are also no missables, including the endings of the game. If you finish an ending and load the save, it will take you directly back into the game with the appropriate completion (some endings also provide collectables after completion). If you feel you need to know beforehand there are 3 endings in the game, which don't need any external wiki searching to accomplish.

As a final thing to note I would like to say that the final area in the game (the appropriately named 'Verboten Domain') may well be one of my favourite zones in the genre in terms of art. If you have an interest in the environments of video games I highly recommend it for its strong grotesque aesthetic which is both almost abstract and strangely beautiful - just note that you will struggle to explore it fully until you find a particular item.

Thanks for reading my review.

The game has some great atmosphere and the game play is pretty good. Character design is great but the story line needs a little more flushing out. When you do run into story material it is great but then your left running around for the next story progression. I guess if there wasn't a lot of running around, it wouldn't have taken so long to beat. Besides that, great game. Thx Devs

Plays really well on controller the inputs are fast and responsive. The game has a great atmosphere and the story is interesting it has some feels to it. Dialogue in this game isn't voice acted but the writings are okay to read it does however has good soundtracks. Combat is fun there's new skills you unlock while on your journey as well as newer enemies and the bosses are challenging in this game but nothing insanely hard to overcome overall the game is worth it the developers made a good game.

I ended up spending a solid week (free time so only 20 ish hours) playing from about 2 hours in and I was hooked. The gameplay, the story, hell, the graphics are all amazing to me. I love the pseudosouls-like feel along with the special combat using the different spirits. If you play this, for the love of everything, 100% it. Don't miss on what is a super fun experience that is balanced on the edge of fun and difficulty. 10/10 please make more you beautiful people.

Fun game, maybe 7.5-8.5/10. Music slap, aesthetic great, map design not the best, still really good tho, but gameplay not so great. Healing take ages, combat not smooth enough, and can only use 6 skills at a time, just minor QoL things I wish was better.
Not a bad game. But coming from Salt & Sanctuary / Hollow Knight, which I think are 8.5-9/10, Ender Lilies just not feels great.
Still recommend it tho, if you're into these type of games.

=== STORY ===
A little girl wakes up with little of no memory of her past in the ruins of a fallen kingdom, afflicted of a curse known as The Blight. With the help of a spirit knight as her protector and sword, she must traverse the kingdom to unravel her her past, what happened to the kingdom and how she can save it.

The story takes a closer approach to the worldbuilding than the characters themselves. This can be a hit or miss sometimes but the world is interesting enough to bypass this detail.

=== GAMEPLAY ===
This is a metroidvania so you can expect the basics of this genre. You start with a few abilities a world map to explore (a very big one imo), as you progress you'll gain new abilities that will help you to move forward and explore new areas, items to equip, gain experience to lvl up, etc.

There's a good number of skills you can acquire in the game (story related and by exploring) but I would say like half of them don't have much use tbh. That doesn't mean you can't try to experiment certain combinations but in the end, there's always gonna be a group that WILL be more useful over the rest.

As I said, the map is HUGE, kinda like Hollow Knight I would say so, if you like to explore, you'll be more than happy. Also, there's a fairly good amount of chekpoints around it to make travel more bereable in some parts.

Combat is nice and engaging, I think there's a good flow when fighting enemies and there's a good variety too, although the experience might vary depending the what skills you have equipped at the time. Evade/parry will is a recurring theme here as some enemies can bring down your health with certain ease. It's not impossible of course but you'll need to keep your guard up.

=== VISUALS & SOUND ===
One of the strong points of this game is its artwork. I love the medieval/fantasy style it has along with the "spooky" element of the Blight. The characters, enemies, backgrounds, everything is well detailed

Shepherd

GREAT Metroidvania/Souls game. I say souls because it does have a learning curve on all bosses, most likely you won't be plowing through the game (ESPECIALLY Ulv, The Mad Knight)...

SPOILER - If you want to make it less difficult, Max level up seigrid, eleine, floral, crypt, Silva. Use seigrid/Floral/Crypt for burst then hammer a close range Eleine

Refreshing, exceptionally good looking world. The actual variety of atmosphere, artstyle and music, yet all thought out, in different parts of the world, is amazing. The music is worthy of the Metroidvania-genre, several bangers, all in smooth flow with the zones.
The controls took some time getting used to, but the maneuvaribility is on par with for example Hollow Knight. It does seem to have heavy similarities with the aforementioned, but after thinking it through I don't see why that has to be a negative thing.

Tldr:
Excellent action packed with great music and beautiful world. Try this while waiting for Silksong.

ArkRage_F

A great game that was for sure worth my time.
Three things that made me very happy are:
1) the ability to "sequence break" some areas with smart use mid game spirits;
2) the fact there's no missables (more specifically all endings can be achieved in a single playthrough);
3) the map has a color code for rooms cleaned of collectibles.
I highly recommend Ender Lilies.

Story is a lil bit obscure, especially at the begining, but overtime some things are getting cleard.

This is the typical “has nothing to say but says it well” game.
Plus a bit of the “weirdly zoomed in, overdetailed main character platformish” game.

It plays like your typical castelvania, with no innovation whatsoever, has a pretty nice story, music, animations, whatever.
Inspiration from a range of titles from Ori to Metroid itself (the last area is wonderful) is recognizable and appreciated

I’ll assign one bonus point as the game is VERY player friendly. There are checkpoints everywhere, completion indicators, everything is incredibly well thought out, no delay after a death, no delay even in the main menu, cutscene replays if you missed something, the go back to the last checkpoint button, and last but not least the perfect controls.

A few unwanted advices for the devs: i’d lower a bit the level requirements for lv.100, you should never 100% the game before getting to it. Maybe add some kind of map notes/markers. But most importantly i think you will try some bolder ideas in your next game. Best of luck!

It's so close to scratching that itch for more Hollow knight. the writing and setting is fantastic, art and maps are interesting and leave a lot of room for return exploration. my only complaint is the combat itself feels clunky. it lacks the smooth fluidness that makes an action plaformer feel good.

Sidequest Man
Sidequest Man

This is a gorgeous looking Metroidvania style game with a hefty challenge. The game world is fully hand-drawn and the animations of the sprites are very detailed. It’s grim at every turn, and yet there’s an element of beauty, too. The art style is very successful at reflecting the dark and diseased world of the story. With an enchanting soundtrack, the atmosphere is complete. Ender lilies is a must for fans of the genre as it’s one of the best metroidvanias.

A very well-done, non-pixel-art Soulsdroidvania (???) in the vein of Hollow Knight. Overall, I really liked this game, I like the exploration aspect of it, and while the map system was a bit annoying for its lack of granularity, I learned to deal with it. Not a major issue by any stretch of the imagination.

In EL, you play as a priestess who awakens to a world of ruin caused by a poisonous rainfall called The Blight. Combat actions in this game are performed by spirits whom you call, ranging anywhere from quick sword attacks, to slower hammer attack, to lingering poison gas clouds, to familiars, to arrows, and to a bit more in between. You get two set ups with 3 powers each (not dissimilar to the GBA/DS Igavania games). Aside from HP, enemies also have Break meters which you can fill up, given the proper attack, to stun them briefly. In the spirit of Dark Souls or even Metroid Prime, the story is told through backgrounds and through reading material you pick up along the way. Powers are acquired by beating bosses and are then upgraded via blighted souls. There are also secrets and shortcuts to unlock to help further traversal through the stages.

If this all sounds familiar, it is! I remember playing Super Metroid on SNES about 30 years ago, and while different games add tweaks to the formula here and there, it is indeed a formula for a reason. I like this formula! What separates the also-rans from the goods/greats are things such as level design, diversity of weapons/skills, and a certain enjoyment of simply exploring that I can't quite quantify, but I know it when I see/play it. Much like Hollow Knight, Super Metroid, Metroid Prime, SOTN (and all subsequent games up to and including Bloodstained: ROTN), I can safely say that this game falls in the "great" category as a well made if not entirely original riff on an established style. It has an art style that I really like and for the most part, the gameplay is crisp and tight. I do wish the "super" command weren't Up+Attack, as I fired off a few of those accidentally.

All in all, if any of the games I've mentioned in this review pique your interest, then I would recommend this game with the HUGE caveat that this game is tough, and the Souls influence might be off-putting to some. It almost drove me away, but I persevered and was rewarded with a pretty nice true ending. If you got the reflexes and the patience for the Souls part, then my recommendation becomes even stronger.

I'm not a big fan of Metroidvania games so I can't compare it with others but I decided to play this game because of the visual art direction and the music which did not disappoint me at all

The character design and lore is great it's simple to understand but deep enough for me to invest with the plot

The gameplay seems a bit off, maybe because of the sound or the system idk but still the animation is real smooth and I love the idea where you are not the one fighting but use your guardian spirits instead

The boss is super fun on the first half but I think it gets more boring after I proceed the story. I think I need more boss that make me feels like I'm in a duel like Ulv, not some projectile-dodging or killing bunch of annoying mobs that the boss summoned.

The exploration is fun and exhausting at the same time. It feels good when you find new secrets and the game really give you rewards for exploring the map but it's extremely exhausting how I have to go back to every blue room on the map after I get new exploration skill just to check if there are anything new I can do in that area....

The music and environment is totally wonderful. I have nothing more to say about this

8/10 - My first Metroidvania game that leaves me a very good impression

p.s. The way they made each ending an alphabet letter and use that alphabet in the ending's name and change the main menu background when you get the true ending really bring me back to NieR, love it!!

I don't have a lot of experience with Metroidvanias, but I like Souls games and melee action games in general.

Ender Lilies has a very interesting spirit system which helps to build up your own combat style. You can use a combination of several unique melee and ranged attacks, including things like poison. This set up can be changed at any checkpoint, which means you can create a different stragety for each boss or a difficult area. Or you can play the whole game with the same build (since you get 6 spirit slots, which is more than enough for any purpose).

The game has the usual combination of jump and dodge, while the spirits also give additional abilities, such as parry.

The difficulty is just enough for the game to be challenging, but not enough to be an annoying slog. At least for me, maybe some people would think it's too easy or too hard.

The art direction is very nice, maybe a little dark, but the atmosphere fits very well, considering the plot and lore of the game.

Overall, I recommend Ender Lilies to anyone who enjoys metroidvanias, soulslikes and action RPGs.

PS: The game allows you to fight any bosses you already beat as many times as you want. Kinda like Sekiro. In my opinion, all games should have that mode.

Similar to Hollow Knight but marginally worse. This game is WORTH playing.
Takes about 12-14 hours to complete (less if you aren't me). I'd actually NEVER heard about this game until recently, no clue how it flew over my head considering I love these style of games. The first 'advertisement' I'd seen of this game was someone doing a speedrun which got me interested. In terms of difficulty I'd say Hollow Knight is far more in comparison.

Positives:
- Relics are good (Can build defensive/offensive). The combat is fluid and the Spirit system is unique. There's lots of combinations.

- The Lore/Plot is good. You get small fragments of the Lore and you've gotta piece it all together. Tonally it's completely depressing without going into spoilers into the plot/ending.

Negatives:
- Misdirection in linear gameplay. Like many other Metroidvania games you get a new ability after beating a boss to progress. Unlike others in the series this progression can be in the middle of nowhere. Maybe I'm stupid but I was running in circles at least twice.

- Lack of Map Customability, cannot place any sort of marker on the map which is a huge detriment when going back with new upgrades.

- Lack of obtainable resources early on to upgrade spirits results in playing what you've invested in- the game DOES try to give you higher leveled Spirits as it progresses (to compete with your investments), but they're not always comparable. Some Spirits are made different.

- Dialogue can be a bit wonky (translation issues?). Such as "I no longer know the pleasures of joy, but despite this, my cheeks widen in a grin" SHOULD be something more like "I no longer knew the pleasure of joy yet my smile remained". Everything is just too verbose where you can trim it to be better and more concise. This is true of almost every single line in the game.

- Lack of voice acting. I think a story where you're TRYING to tug at the sob stories should have some form of audio to accompany the speech, even if it's grunts or Legend of Zelda noises. The cutscenes with just music and silent dialogue is sorta mid, even if the message is decent. I felt the Endings were pretty powerful but lacked that kick to knock me over the edge.

- The last part of the game is running around in circles while finishing the map. It felt more completionist than continuing the game. Most of the secret areas are fair, the map DOES tell you where you need to go- so it's not completely awful.

It is not often I come across such well crafted worlds. How can something so sad be so beautiful.

As 2D Action Adventure RPG (Metroidvania) this game nears perfection and there really isn't anything bad I can say about it. Art, animations, story, music, map design etc. are all best of the genre.

Top tier metroidvania that falls short only of hollow knight, I'd say it's second or third in line after that. But the soundtrack, my god, I listen to the tracks regularly they are just so good. I don't know how I stumbled upon this hidden gem of a game, but I am glad I did. I truly enjoyed every moment I spent with it's world. I would consider it "one of the best" metroidvania's, and just leave it there. But that statement is pure hyperbole and does not do the game justice. So here, I will try my best to explain why I recommend this, and hope it helps you make your purchase decision.

First off - What is the game about exactly? It is a 2D action/platformer game with RPG lite elements. You control the character 'Lily' as she makes her way through various levels and locations of the game's world. IF you have played Hollow Knight, SoTN, or any of the million metroidvania's that have come out in the past decade, you will know what to expect here. I suppose you could refer to it as "Japanese Hollow Knight" if I had to make a relationship to something that most gamers are aware of.

The best part of the game is the audio/visual presentation. Everything looks gloomy and stunning at the same time, while the sublime OST provides astonishing tracks that make you feel part of the world, and you can gain a deeper sense of the tragedy that has befallen this once grand kingdom. I feel like I bought a fantastic OST that happens to have a game included in it. This game also borrows from the 'soulslike' concept of gameplay. Meaning, it can be challenging at times, and if you go to the rest/bonfire area, enemies will respawn, but you retain all your exp and everything.(Even if you die, so it is more lax than most soulslike stuff) I personally didn't find it too hard, but it should be noted that the final area of the game is a steep curve of difficulty - so take that under advisement.

As for the gameplay, I liked it enough. It's not standout or will wow you, but it fits the nature of the game and doesn't make it any worse for what it is. It is acceptable. The story is not told in a traditional sense where you have cutscenes with characters speaking, explaining things, etc. The player must piece it together from various notes found in the game's world itself, and reading item descriptions. However, if you take the time to do that, you will find a deeply human story at it's core, and fleeting moments of hope can be gleaned. It's a nice thing to have considering the game's world is oppressive, sad, and just downright in a state of despair. Every piece of lore I found, and took the time to read, enhanced the game for me, and it wasn't too much or too little - it was just enough to make finding all the hidden secrets and items worth the effort.

Overall, I really recommend this game if you are a fan of soulslike gameplay in a 2D playing field, and aren't shy about a challenge. If you just play games for fun and don't like to be challenged, I would not recommend this to you. Mind, I do personally not think it is all that hard overall, but I am accustomed to challenging gameplay. I really look forward to what this dev team cooks up next, and from the looks of things 'Harvestella' is being published by Square-Enix, but it appears to have the dev team from Ender Lilies. Will there be any references from this game to that one? Who knows! I thank you for reading this review, and hoped it helps you make a decision on whether or not you should check this title out.

Bought this game on a whim because I liked the aesthetics of it, and I don't regret it for a second. It's a beautifully told story, with incredible music throughout the whole game. The combat system is very engaging, and the different spirit abilities allow you to constantly switch it up and try new combos. The parry system isn't what it could be, and I decided to stay away from the parrying for the most part. If you enjoy gothic-style settings and enjoy exploring, this would definitely be a game to give a try. 10/10

I do not usually leave reviews for games, but I shall make an exception for this because I want to share how amazing this game is. And for the devs' first release too!

So first let's talk about the story. I've always been a sucker for storylines told in a ruined world and landscape, but this game is pretty impressive at handing out pieces of lore little by little while also letting the players experience firsthand the devastation and the aftermath of everything that has been going on. The artstyle and soundtracks greatly complements their storytelling as well. It gives off some melancholic vibes that either soothe the player in times of respite or fill them with a sense of dread as they go deeper and deeper into finding out the secrets of the catastrophe. Really immersive experience that can tug at the heart strings.

Next is the combat. Well, this is the devs' first game on Steam so I can be a bit lenient with this, but I can definitely see why some people think the combat is lacking. In essence, combat is pretty straightforward and easy to grasp. Usually when people play Metroidvania games and expect hard difficulty, they really mean HARD difficulty. And Ender Lilies is a bit more forgiving in that aspect. Sometimes to the point where it can get bland at times. But I believe that this game focuses more on the storytelling aspect rather than the difficulty of gameplay. And if we look at it that way, it becomes a lot more enjoyable. Hard combat is there where its necessary, and the allies you gain along the way have really good variety that fit into various playstyles. If I had to improve on something, I think I'd want them to implement a system wherein you can reset the upgrades. Some of the allies you gain appear late in the game and resources needed to upgrade them can get scarce so a way to reset upgrades would be a nice addition.

Lastly, I want to talk about my personal take on the game. As I said earlier, I love games that tell of the aftermath of a catastrophe. You play as a young girl trying to undo it, trying to free the people from their grim fate, and as you go along, you piece together some major events that happened before and some secrets that can make you emotional. Everything about this game can make you emotional, actually. Which is why I truly loved their artstyle and their soundtracks as these things greatly elevated their game. Overall, its a very good game for the devs' first release and I hope that their future games will be just as great, if not greater. Personally I don't know if I want to see a sequel of this specific game, as I think its fine as is. But that's up to them. Maybe they'll surprise us.

Anyways, I highly recommend this game!

Art: 9/10

I really didn't expect to much from this game but it has ended up being one of my favourite gaming experiences this year. I didn't use guides at all, and kept being surprised by how much the map was expanding. You really feel like you're pushing into dangerous and secret areas, places that you aren't meant to be. I found the story and lore to be really intriguing too. It was really rewarding to start to uncover and understand what was going on in this crumbling, melancholic world.

The boss fights are excellent. There is a good level of difficulty and they can really start to feel like desperate, frenetic duels in the final phases.

Also, huge shout out to whoever scored this game, the music is incredible!

A beautiful experience. Go buy it, you won't regret it!

The game is nothing but beautiful. The art, the music, the story, all of them are great. The length is not too short or too long, it's about right to make you feel engaged from start to finish.

And there is no BS in this game. It's fair as fair can get. You know it's on you when you lose, and when you win, it's so satisfying.

It's a lot more straightforward and less cryptic than other metroidvanias, and it was a nice change of pace to have one of these games that I can basically 100% without having to look up a million guides. The game is very well polished, with solid combat, smooth platforming and some clever puzzles that still felt intuitive enough to avoid getting frustrated. Art direction and soundtrack are on point as well, which is always a big plus in these games.

On the negative side, I don't have much. Sometimes the visual effects of combat would make it hard to keep track of where my character was (which can be a problem since enemies deal contact damage), but that was the only occasional annoyance i encountered. Great game overall and highly recommend to any metroidvania fan

This is a great game. It plays alot like Super Metroid and Hollow Knight so the gameplay is a highlight. I like the music and art as well. The story is pretty good for a metroidvania. I would rank this behind Hollow Knight with Bloodstained in the top 3 best modern metroidvanias. There are no missables so I highly recommend a blind playthrough.

The beautiful art and music create an amazing atmosphere as you travel through the world. The fact that your attacks and abilities are other characters protecting/carrying you is pretty cool. All the bosses were challenging but very fun and fair. Each time you lose, you know exactly where you made a mistake and when you win. its very satisfying. Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys metroidvanias.

Really good game. The soundtrack was amazing through the entire game and really fit the environment you were in. The story was pretty good and a lot could be told through reading the notes around, environment and items you pick up. I tend to enjoy Metroidvania games a lot.
Finding all those little collectibles is an enjoyable experience for me.
Seeing the map slowly go from blue to orange as I progress in the game and gain more abilities.
I would place Ender Lilies in the same rank as Hollow Knight and Bloodstained.

I truly enjoyed how this game didn't try to over reach itself and become too punishing.
Dying doesnt mean you lost Xp and have to redo certain section.
No Ender Lilies just places you back to the last respite location that you have visited and you get to keep all that you have gained in that last fatal run of yours.

Graphics are nice, music is very serene. I have had session where I started playing and suddenly 4 hours have passed.
It has been a long time since a game made me do that.
Lilly is a wonderful priestess character, I like the little touch of her always shielding her eyes when violence is committed.

All in all if you enjoy Metroidvania games, you will enjoy Ender Lilies and you should pick it up.

I just love this game, it's fun and the right amount of stressful.
It's similar to Hollow Knight while being it's own unique identity.

A remarkable experience. The atmosphere was raw and unsettling, the emotions conveyed through the rot and purification were beautifully crafted, and the soundtrack was unbelievably good. The wide range of abilities makes each encounter unique and the combat feels anything but stale.

And yes, I have way more time in the game than steam says.

A fun, engaging metroidvania that hits the difficulty sweet spot. I beat the game and got the 'good' ending in 18 hours, enjoying the entire journey.

Combat is fun and varied, with challenging bosses that still feel completely 'fair.' There are lots of 'weapons' that have a genuinely unique feel, letting you play the style you want.

Exploration is solid, although the map design suffers on a few occasions where there are only 1 or 2 paths forward and you have to run around the map until you find them.

Overall a great game well worth playing. And the soundtrack is beautiful!

Summary - Fun metroidvania, fun to play while waiting for Silksong. Many combat skills. Fairly varied bosses and enemies. Took me about 20 hrs to get all trophies without a guide.

Positives-

-Beautiful soundtrack
-Fluid combat and movement
-Fun and elaborate puzzles
-Decent boss fights
-Story is fleshed out and detailed
-Beautiful graphics
-Non-hardcore elements (may be a plus or minus), lose nothing on death, cleared areas are marked as such to help with completion

Negatives-

-Hitboxes can be a bit scuffed, both FOR and AGAINST
-Bosses are fun to fight, however overall boss/enemy diversity is lacking compared to Hollow Knight

I really like art and music in this game, Combat is quite simple but it's enjoyable however...

In area after 1st boss there is a room where game drops to 1 fps making further progress impossible. Issue was acknowledged by the developer but after 1 year issue still isn't fixed.
Another issue I've ran into is stuttering of cutscenes, audio will stutter and it seems like cutscene will end sooner that expected.

Note que nunca joguei um metroidvania, mas comprei esse pela música e gostei bastante de... tudo.

Easily one of the most underrated Souls-likes in recent memory. Beautiful artwork, great music that fits each area, and lore that makes you actually care about the characters (if you bother to read it). Best of all it's one of the most accessible Souls-like. No death penalties means you won't have to worry about losing hours of work do to one little mistake, and the lack of a stamina bar makes the combat a lot more fast paced than your typical Souls affair. Make no mistake, this game WILL kick your ass if you screw up, but at least those ass kickings don't sting as much.

A metroidvania with absurdly good environmental storytelling and a very interesting soundtrack. About 18 hours to 100% the game, which is almost the same as beating it. Wonderful game with fun mechanics, excellent fights, and of course the classic metroidvania "I have a strategy for this boss, I just need to execute it without dying". A lot of customization, which is very good, and I had a blast trying all sorts of different loadouts. This is one of the first games I actually made use of the customization options to beat bosses instead of just upgrading the initial gear a billion times. 10/10 would recommend.

This game has pretty good art design and music, nothing majorly wrong with the combat, concept is fine. So why do I not recommend it?

World design is lacking and uninspired. You never feel like you are in a believable world, but stacks of corridors with very same-y layouts, filled with the same enemies you've encountered throughout.

Gameplay is tedious. Pertaining to what I said above, exploration feels like a chore in this game.

The map itself is a pretty big reason for this; it tells you what room you're in and how other rooms connect but it doesn't show where you actually are in the room. It also tells you when you've completed a room (i.e. by getting a hidden item) by turning orange. Not a fan of this, to be told there is something in the room and then find it, it doesn't feel organic.

As I said earlier, I don't have much to complain about with the combat but I do have a few issues with it. It never quite feels like you actually deal damage. It is floaty and there is practically no impact in your attacks; like you're hitting enemies with a feather. Bosses feel like they take forever to die, they are sponges.

Ender Lillies is an incredibly slow burn. It's a game that doesn't want to take any risks and because of that suffers in originality. If I had to describe it in one word, it would be "bland".

Ryukrieger
Ryukrieger

Ender Lilies is a wonderful dark fantasy Metroidvania that diverged from the usual standard enough that made it an unique experience. The game is set in a world infected by something called the Blight, with our protagonist Lily waking up with no knowledge of what has happened and following her as she discovers what happened.

In Short

The game's control is solid and precise, the world-building and story presents a grim world with glimmers of hope, the music and art style at times help add calmness and other times it adds an ever-haunting presence over the game. Despite the dark world, Lily's bright appearance present a contrast to this world, serving as its last hope. Overall, the game is a wonderful journey from beginning to end, more detailed thoughts below

Recommendation

Personally, a total recommendation, this game worked great for me. But... well...

If you like Metroidvania, this game is a serious contender.
If you also like artistic aspects of a game, this game got a unique "feel" to it, if you like what you see and hear in the videos, the entire game doesn't disappoint on this front. But if what's presented didn't click with you, it might not grab you as fast as I did with me (or at all).

Extra thoughts

Mechanically, the game's control is precise, you can select and control up to 6 spirits (which represent abilities that you can use during the gameplay), who are bosses Lily encounter and have to defeat to purify, they all have different pros and cons. Some are immediate attacks with possible combos, others will place down an area of effect that damage the enemies over time. These spirits can be upgraded with 3 different resources, one exclusively for your first spirit, one for all main spirits (main bosses), and one for all optional spirits.

All combat abilities will have timing, so every attack you will be committed for most of the animation, so combining attacks of various strength and speed is key to a tough fight. However, their utility doesn't stop at combat, some can add to Lily's movement to allow her to move different than normal, which is necessary for some optional platforming puzzles to get you more resources. The difficulty's balance is quite good, I personally find it rather challenging but your mileage may vary.

The game does have an optional NG+ which you can start after reaching an ending.

Thematically, the game doesn't tell you much at the start, you'll find out more about the world in a few ways. First is through conversation with the other main character, a spirit called Umbral Knight who will serve as Lily's first and most balanced attack, as Lily travels across this world. Second is through the world and enemies themselves, each area got unique designs which show a lot about how the Blight affected this world, from normal villages to a grand castle. Lastly is via the classic letters and notes left by people who used to inhabit the land (before they lost their sanity, anyway).

The storytelling is well-paced and focused, and by the end you'll probably be able to piece together the full backstory. The story overall is haunting, and as the game goes on, it captures you and lure you into both a sense of curiosity and uneasiness about what might happen. By the end... there are multiple endings depending on what you do within the game, all of which are very satisfying to see and the game will allow you to resume where you left off to pursue other endings, so don't worry about needing to play through the entire game multiple times just for endings. I'm being rather vague here but truly it's both a hopeful and tragic story, which I'd like for you to discover for yourself.

Good, though not great.

Ender Lilies succeeds in creating a rich and invoking atmosphere right out of the gate, from character design and drive to an overarching narrative with several different endings that all seamlessly work with one another the aspect of the story is fully realized and one of the strongest elements of the game.

The Souls like approach as well lends great strength to the charm of the game but as a source of its charm therein lies its weakness as the difficulty curve goes from a challenging ascension to a grueling and numbing experience. The issue thereof is the design of enemies and placement throughout, as the game rewards the player with enough experience, auxiliary power-ups, and helpers to manage bosses and grinds the later levels completely ignore the notion of a well balanced challenge and create new iterations of previous enemies that become damage sponges and can near one-shot you if you're not careful which given how slippery the controls can be in combat is an easy trap to fall into.

The music is sublime and aides in establishing a Gothic, decrepit, and otherwise bittersweet tone to the progression of the game, but the individual themes and melodies aren't themselves discrete enough to establish individual identities from one another, the cadence and rhythm of each track falls into a similar niche as the one preceding, at least in reference to the overworld stages—the theme for Dryad Lake being an exception. The scoring as a whole is an interesting compositional choice as it sits somewhere between Chopin and Okami.

For its normal price I'd stay away from purchase or suggestion, but without question it'd definitely be worth the investment if you could find it for a decent price on sale.

Good user mechanics, enough variety with enemies to not bore you, bosses feel like bosses and the minibosses are fun to tackle. Story is the typical vague dark souls type of just enough info to keep you curious and letting your imagination fill in the rest. Plus I like JoJo-style of having my own stand(s).

This seems to be a pattern with these 'good' metroidvanias.
They all start off with a great premise and atmosphere and then absolutely shit the bed.
When you have a makeshift combat system that it usable but not refined, you have no business making timings precise as well as making enemies damaging beyond belief, especially given how many enemies appear in certain spammed areas.

TL;DR Overview: Elder Lilies is an enjoyable metroidvania that has enough new ideas for fans of these types of games, while not being too difficult or obtuse for those new to the genre.
Score: 8/10

Review: Elder Lilies is not really a Souls-Like. The only similarities it shares to a Dark souls game is healing consumables that restore at resting spots (and some particulars spots on the map), and a general medieval aesthetic centering around the gothic and grotesque. Elder Lilies seems to derive most of it's influence from Castlvevania (and Hollow Knight), landing it solidly into the "metroidvania" category of games. You gain experience and level up, but don't lose any of this experience upon dying, and leveling up always is a static boost to health, damage, etc. The choices the player gets to make are spirits and relics, which are gathered as the game progresses.

Spirits are the weapons and special attacks that can be used. They are acquired through killing the bosses and upgraded independently through a couple different materials you have to search (and I mean SEARCH) for. The idea is pretty fun and cool, but the main issue is that the gameplay doesn't actually differ enough between most of your options, and the ones that DO differ are usually slow and ineffective. Endgame comes down to "spam attack while procing your specials after cooldown and dodging when necessary". Don't get me wrong, it is still fun to dodge a half dozen enemy attacks when leaving a trail of your spirit warriors to anihilite them. However, your gameplay only ever has to slightly change based on what spirits you use. Relics are charms from Hollow Knight, but not as interesting. They give boosts like more hp, better heals, more damage, etc.

The enemies you are up against are fairly varied, though generally not very original. Lots of dudes in armor and indescribable abominations that serve their purpose of being something to beat on. Sadly, the bosses are mostly the same. Dudes in armor, a weird abomination, and nothing else that you haven't really seen before. The boss fights themselves are once again fun, but not very memorable save for 2 or 3. The game also does only have ~10 true bosses. One thing Elder Lilies does 100% right is allow you to fight a boss you've previously beaten at any point after you've beaten them.

The other half of this game is exploration, like any good metroidvania. Main progress is made by obtaining new abilities that allow you to reach once blocked off areas. These abilities include a double-jump, a hookshot thing, the ability to swim - your typical castlevania fare. These powers are also used to find secret areas and items in each room. Overall, the exploration "difficulty" in Ender Lilies is pretty fair. I only really got stuck once while trying to beat the main game. However, some of the secret items are kind of ridiculous. A couple of them seemed to need speedruning-like strategies to get.

In brief, the story is bland. It's not "bad", but it's basically the same as every souls-like. There is a Blight (literally called that in game) that is corrupting everyone and making everything terrible. You have to go and save everyone and purify them, or at the very least bring an end to their torment. There are nice little cutscenes, along with the (again, somewhat played out) item descriptions to flesh out the lore, but it's simply not very interesting or unique.

The visuals are, in my opinion, fine. Some of the enemies and spirits can look a bit clunky, and it can sometimes be hard to tell exactly wtf you're fighting, but I didn't find it too distracting. The background visuals can also be quite elegant, which helps ease over the ugliness of the enemies. One thing the game 100% absolutely NAILED is the audio and soundtrack. Quiet, timid piano ballads that swell as you progress through an area before climaxing in a chorus of voices during the boss fights.....awesome. A+, no complaints here.

Overall, Elder Lilies is an extremely well put together and enjoyable experience, but falls short of the great games of the genre, like Hollow Knight or Bloodstained. The game will give you a fun 15 hours of solid metroidvania combat and exploration, but you probably won't think much about the game once you get down plowing through the achievements.

Shame that I have to give this game a negative rating because I had high expectations going into it but I was sorely disappointed. All the budget went into the music and art design because everything else is mediocre at best. Combat is spammy and dull, level design is uninspired and boring, and they have completely misunderstood what makes a game like this great. My biggest disappointment: picking up dozens of letters, notes and memoires that are conveniently scattered throughout the map with paragraphs of exposition is not an engaging or interesting way to present your lore.

beautiful music and visuals. had more fun platforming to hidden souls and trinkets tho. boss patterns are simple to learn, the final one being depressingly easy. combat is stiff, so attack speed key, which made some spirits useless for fights. would've liked to make the dive dodge selectable instead of it being replaced with the dash dodge. pretty sure the dash was slower, and it was fun diving fast off heights. almost 100% the game. might just walk around to listen to the music and look at the pretty environment now and then

Sort of like if Viewtiful Joe was Elden RIng themed and used Hollow Knight's gameplay as a model. Fun Game, very challenging without feeling impossible, able to take many different approaches to beating it and has a reasonable amount of freedom in the order in which to do so. There is a general direction that you are lead in and like most Metroid-ish games there are some obstacles that can only be passed by completing certain parts first, but there's a certain extent to which you can get around some obstacles through stubbornness, skill and timing. Geared slightly more toward people who are already fans of this type of game than an introduction to the genre.

Enjoyed the game and it's not too hard getting 100% achievement which is nice. Even if it is souls-like, you won't lose anything when you die. Even if you keep dying at the boss, the respawn is just nearby and you can retry again.

Lovely dark fantasy Metroidvania, with some few soul-like elements in gameplay, offering mellow story with fairly satisfying combat.
Pros:
- Excellent art direction, effects, UI, music and sound, all in one
- Somewhat generous in combat choices, using unlockable spirits as weapons and skills
- Simple way of telling story and lore, even bosses are connected
- Decently designed boss fights, of many varieties and phases
- Combat encourages active play style with parrying and skill usages
- Simple map design with steady difficulty curve, players can rely on save point and map to explore

Cons (Most don't even matter and of some minor nuisance if you want to fully clear the game)
- Difficulty curves may go up very high near the end (boss may kills you in 3-4 hits in rapid succession)
- Player has low health overall and need to explore for upgrades
- Several locations/ Items are hidden, locked with special requirements, making it more time consuming if u want to explore everything
- many Spirit options aren't so balanced, but that's because some few are so helpful that you may not use others for limited slots

Really good Metroidvania/Soulslike game:

Gameplay/Abilities - Movement is mostly standard but it does add its own spin to it which is cool. The spirit system is great as it provides a wide range of options as you progress the game for the player to customise & tinker with.

World/Map - Nicely designed, fun to casually go through but still offers a good challenge. Lots of items which can lead to a fair amount of backtracking but it's worth it. The map is very helpful in telling you which places need exploring.

Enemies/Bosses - Enemies are nice. As for bosses I can't think of any terrible ones and the game has some fights that I love. 90% of the time the fights balances fun & challenge very well. the boss fight reworks in NG+ combined with other tools provides great challenge to more skilled players but this is optional.

Music - The level music really helps set the atmosphere for each area. The one gripe (this is my subjective taste) I have is that a lot of the boss themes doesn't feel like a fight theme but more of a theme for the character that is the boss. It doesn't get the adrenaline flowing sometimes but when it works oh boy it feels amazing.

Overall, I recommend this game to people that played games like Dark Souls or Hollow Knight as it shares some of the qualities those 2 games have. I really enjoyed this game
