This is going to be a novel of a review, and I honestly hope someone in the development team reads this; because I am going to try and be as honest and constructive as possible, rather than just leave a thumbs down without explaining why.

If you are here for a long story short - I didn't really enjoy playing through this game, and I wouldn't recommend it, certainly not if you are buying it at full price.

Also if you are reading for info on whether or not to buy this game, I'll keep this as spoiler free as I possibly can. I wouldn't want to dissuade anyone who reads this and wants to try it for themselves.

Here's some background to why I am leaving a thumbs down:

I watched about 2 years ago someone playing through the start of the first chapter of this game as I was flipping through streams. It looked interesting and spooky enough, but for whatever reason I decided against playing it.

Recently it was recommended to me and I recalled seeing it; I figured why not, it looked interesting enough and I am always down for a good spooking.

To start off, I was confused upon starting the game, no tutorial anymore - you are just dropped into chapter 1 with no explanation - may I ask why? The mechanics have changed over the years it would be nice to at least get a brief introduction into the core gameplay. I was confused, thinking charging the flashlight was still a thing, and being able to hold your breath was a thing.

If this was a stylistic choice and the tutorial was removed for the sake of immersion, couldn't a short intro segment at least explain the basic mechanics? The monster AI and gameplay mechanics are not super obvious to the point of making a tutorial unnecessary; especially since there was a tutorial in the past - why remove it? Couldn't you have just given an option to skip it or not?

Second major gripe, may I ask why there is no pause feature? I looked at the control menu in awe that you cannot pause the game for a solid minute. This is a single player game... the last single player and non-online game I personally played that did not have a pause feature was made for the NES in 1990.

This would be kind of acceptable to me if you could save the game at absolutely any time, and reload exactly where you left off - but not only is there no manual save, only auto saves.

This is just a very strange choice that is hard for me to understand, you are bound to get a phone call, need to use the bathroom, or something will come up while playing; the only thing you can do is hope there is a safe place to hide (if one is available, and it might take a minute to get to) and do so while you leave the game running, while you might miss a good opportunity to make a break for it - honestly I cannot understand the reason for it.

Now in terms of the actual gameplay, when I watched it years ago it looked quite spooky, but honestly I only found it scary for the first 15 minutes, when you constantly are exposed to the monster, he constantly kills you and sets you back to the last checkpoint, and you realize there is really no penalty for dying besides wasting your time; it becomes tiring to say the least.

If you are only going to have one enemy, the AI should be spot on; and mean this with no offense, but I have played games created in 48 hours for a game jam with better AI than the Ayuwoki. The whole game is sitting in safe spots just hoping he wanders far enough for you to have a moment of freedom to progress.

How is it that you can wait 5 minutes in a safe spot and all he does is wander back and forth literally it's like watching a bugged AI who can only patrol back and forth once altered. Again all of this is just wasting your time, it's not very scary (or even fun honestly) to spend so long walking very slowly from safe spot to safe spot, hoping you are lucky and he wanders away.

Also some of the gameplay segments is quite absurd, there are moments in the game that unless you know what is going to happen next, you are pretty much assured to be killed; is it supposed to create a fun or scary experience to set the player up for death? Truly I don't understand, a close encounter or a sudden alert that you are being hunted puts the player on edge, but no, you in all likelihood are going to die at certain segments unless you know you have to hide in advance.

The shame to be with all of this is I feel like this game could have been so much more enjoyable, because the graphics are nice enough, the monster design is kind of cool, and the story is kind of unique too, also some of the puzzles were interesting conceptually, again, I didn't not find them that enjoyable because they were not executed very well.

All these negative things truly and honestly just ruined the experience for me, and playing the game felt more like a chore I had to set aside time for, rather than something fun or spooky, or challenging in an enjoyable way.

Finally, I always play through the whole game before leaving any review, just to be complete with the experience - and again, was disappointed by the ending, and how the getting the various endings even is accomplished, all very odd and poorly executed as well. It doesn't feel rewarding in the slightest.

Okay, I feel really stupid for getting this game and the dlc after almost 3 years now but the honest truth/opinion coming from me is that, I absolutely fell in love with this community and with anything in relations to it, also around two years ago I was obsessed to listening to Michael Jackson and even had a 2020 calendar with a different picture of Michael for each month and still have it in my room, R.I.P Michael Joseph Jackson, now moving on so far I'm getting really positive vibes from the game and I'm finding it more and more interesting every moment as I dig deeper within the background of the whole story of the game, I haven't gotten too far into the game according to the fact that I've gotten these games only 2 days ago, but as I say once again, I'm really honored to keep on playing this game to complete it once and for all and move on with my life and do other stuff like playing other video games or just living life spending time with my friends or spending a butt load of money on a bunch of crap I'll never give any attention to for 5 seconds unless it's clothing and other accessories which I won't keep talking about too much anymore, because at the end of the day I'm really just giving out my positive feelings and opinions on this game, as I was saying, the game seems pretty promising so far and terrifying as the Ayuwoki creature scuttles around like a crab searching for his victims, although he's blind ''ha ha'' he can hear anything, like rats, or the sound of you breathing in and out with fear when he's close by, also I always freeze with fear due to how within a specific range of distance he can hear you walking to, or apart from one another, even though I'm being way nicer than usual saying something to someone I must say how there are a few bugs in the game I came across, one of them being when I was in a situation getting spotted by the Ayuwoki, I jumped up on a box in a hall and the freak was just screeching at me and doing some moves from the Thriller, he wouldn't leave, I go to one side of the box he goes there too, after that I basically got L'd on and stopped playing the game for the day annnnnd yeah, also, another issue I'm having is that when I press and hold right click on my mouse, the dude keeps continually breathing and gets eaten, and I'm not sure if it's because I started off with easy mode so the bind's removed because you could get away easier or because after 2 year's it was changed to a different one, hopefully when I play normal mode I can hold my breath and not get shid on, that's really all for now byyyeeeeeeeee... :)

Very good horror. Picked it and its DLC up in a bundle in the summer sale and it was a very pleasant surprise altogether.
Now it may not have been the most optimised, the game did chug along a bit. Or the most scary. Cause let's be honest, there's something quite hysterical hearing cultists call out in a droning chant "ARE...YOU...OH...KAY..." which does lesser the horrific nature of everything.
But overall the environments were nicely done, the gameplay, particularly when combined with the DLC is varied enough, there's enough longevity in it for all the price. And the meme-play is hilarious to boot. There was a wondrous creeping tension knowing I had to sprint pass a 'heh-heh'ing ghoulish Michael Jackson to reach the next safe spot.
Absolutely recommended.

PLEASE NOTE, even though I have left comments on, I am not interested in you telling me that I should put 4000 hours into a game I don't enjoy so I can "git gud", and then I would like it. That is a stupid argument. Don't be stupid. Skill is not indicative of enjoyment, and I have better things to do than bash my head on what I personally feel are bad / mediocre games on the off chance I could maybe like them one day. I have a life and don't play games in order to develop Stockholm syndrome.

I am running a 4k screen. I am using a 3080 & 5800X processor with all current drivers and patches manually installed on Windows 10 x64.
I played with a keyboard and mouse.

I will update this review if I continue to play and have more to add and will leave comments on.

PROS:
- I am into horror games, and this had an initially interesting premise.

CONS:
- I didn't have any idea this was based on Michael Jackson and thought I had triggered a stupid monster skin.
- There is no tutorial.
- The game seems targeted at stupid Twitch streamers who like to scream for 10 year olds and pretend to be frightened.
- The audio is blown way, way out and will clip your speakers; the sound for getting captured is at least 10 decibels higher than any other sound in the game.
- This is the thing that made me quit: The player seek routines are broken no matter the difficulty. I started the game, thought I was going the wrong way, dropped into an area, and was killed within three seconds. I hit "Try Again". I was already in the dropped area, walked forward roughly four feet, and was killed again promptly. This continued for the entire time I played the game. The monster will "hover" near you, even if it's not given a reason to because it doesn't know you're there, and it will never go away. I hid behind some boxes further on and for a full half hour, it sat in the hallway outside. And before you tell me how bad I am at the game, think again. There was literally zero way to progress. Jumping over the boxes to get out of the hiding spot would cause the creature to beeline towards you immediately, and there was no other way out of the spot.

CONCLUSION:
The game is broken, purposely obtuse, repetitive, and not scary in the least. The positive reviews seem to be from meme kiddies.

Escape the Ayuwoki we all know is definitely Michael Jackson and yes it's pretty creepy. The game has one main goal and it is to escape the mansion of the Ayuwoki and while doing so you will have to solve some puzzles and sneak your way out. The Ayuwoki runs and crawls and he will find you if you don't hide! This games rating is at least a 7/10 for its interesting story and level designs.

I don't want to be too harsh on indie developers, but at the same there are other countless indie horror games which are way more entertaining such as SOMA or Amnesia. The microphone gimmick stops being funny or entertaining after 10 minutes and the gameplay consists of you waiting whilst the monster walks by which is about as entertaining as punching yourself in the face.

Do not recommend.

I don't know if this was a bug, however, for the majority of my playthrough, the monster was hyper-sensitive to any movement or possible noises that came from my character. The majority of my playtime was sitting in hiding spot after hiding spot while the monster just circled me. Due to this, my favorite moments in the game were when I was alone and not being hounded by the monster. This game has great, tense atmosphere but the moment the monster showed up, it just became a waiting game. I liked the Summoning more than the base game, however, it didn't save the experience for me.

It plays well and has a very smooth camera which makes playing alot more easier. Its also speedrun friendly for anyone who wants to try speedrunning it!
The story is also pretty interesting and it has a lot of good lore for you to find.

All and all the game is a blast to play and i recommend you give it a shot! :D

Escape the Ayuwoki is honestly a great game, I’d even argue AAA.
In a horror game where your goal is to escape, it’s quite bland and simple, but not here. EtA has much more replay ability Than most escape games, due to the inconsistent patterns.
I mean, who I wouldn’t love to be chased by a creature that hears your every move, including your mic?
Truly a game I wouldn’t regret buying, was well worth the wait.

As a fan of Michael Jackson I'm surprised I didn't know about this game sooner, but it wasn't until I watched Cory Kenshin's playthrough of the original prototype of the game in early 2020 that I was aware this existed, and when I found out that the titular Ayuwoki was based on the Michael Jackson creepypasta / meme, I had to check this out. Ayuwoki is a play on 'are you okay?' from the chorus of the hit song Smooth Criminal.

If you like challenging first-person stealth survival horror games, you'll really enjoy this, and although I struggled during my first playthrough (this game is hard), once I got the hang of the mechanics, I had a blast.

It's a first person survival horror, where you awake in a deserted mansion and have to escape, all the while being hunted by an undead Michael Jackson known as the Ayuwoki who runs around snarling and screeching 'hee hee', Michael's signature vocal riff (in the DLC he also uses other famous MJ vocal effects). You can carry a flashlight at all times, but instead of managing an inventory, you can carry one other item in your offhand, such as a key or a puzzle item.

The Ayuwoki is partially blind but hunts by echolocation, so the primary game mechanic is sound - he can literally hear your mic (unless you disable that), but otherwise he'll hear you running, throwing etc. so keeping quiet is key to success. But he can still see your flashlight (confirmed by the devs during one of my streams), so when you don't need it or you're hiding, you need to turn it off otherwise he'll just camp your position.

The plot is quite cryptic, but is revealed incrementally by finding cassette recorders around the mansion, or by accessing the video files and photos from the TV monitoring room. I won't explain the plot here (because spoilers), but the game does get more surreal as you progress, and I've completed it several times with more questions than answers.

The game is hard - it doesn't handhold, or give you many clues, and the items you need to progress can spawn in multiple locations, making each playthrough slightly different, and some locations make a run more challenging than others. Whilst you're progressing you can hide under tables, behind boxes or doors and in red bushes, and you'll know when you're hiding as the game will show you a crossed-out 'eye' symbol on screen. Trust me, you'll need to hide, as if the Ayuwoki catches you, it's a jumpscare and a one-hit kill.

For those of you who like secrets and achievements, this game has many. It has different endings based on various gameplay conditions, a choice of multiple routes in the final chapter, in-game collectables, and unlockable gameplay modes if you complete the game on the hardest difficulty.

THE SUMMONING DLC - the DLC continues from where the first game finishes but you play as a different character in the same mansion. The DLC is probably as long as the original game but adds more enemy types, different items to use, more varied locations and gets even more surreal, if that's possible! I've only played the DLC once so I can't talk about it as much as the original game, but the graphics and enemies are lush, particularly in the forest section.

TL/DR, a fantastic first-person survival stealth horror game where you need to escape from an undead Michael Jackson in a dark mansion. Awesome.
