A wonderful little shooter that just does everything right, and is chock full of clever little design touches. Absolutely worth picking up in early access to help this developer finish the game. If this game someday had a level editor I could also see it living on as mod/cult phenomenon, as it has its own personality and isn't simply a 1-to-1 remake of classic FPS, even though it takes all the correct lessons from those games.

Hats off to dev! Absolutely loved this!

This is an EXTREMELY solid take on the boomer shooter genre - the weapons feel great, the enemy sprites are expressive and readable, and the whole aesthetic works beautifully.

The game is absolutely more akin to Wolfenstein 3D's mazy, flat corridors than it is Doom's winding heights, but I think there's space for that in this genre. There's a lovely blend of Wolf3D's mazes with wider open areas that keep the game from getting repetitive; the game is also difficult enough to cause genuine "oh hell" moments when rounding the corner into a shotgunner or a crowd of basic mooks.

There's more than enough content here already to justify the asking price and the dev has been communicative about future updates. I think this is a steal and showed me there's room for more than one kind of boomer shooter in today's market.

Absolutely promising little retro shooter with satisfying gun sounds and solid, fast-paced gameplay. Level design is expansive and interconnected, fostering curiosity and encouraging further exploration.

This game is an absolute delight. For fans of retro-shooters I can't recommend it highly enough. From the music to the level design it just does everything right. It hits that perfect sweet spot of nostalgia that makes me feel like i'm back in high school staying up late to play Wolfenstein 3d or Blake Stone on my dad's computer.

Wolf 3D, but adorable! In a mere matter of hours I've become addicted to popping cute mutants like pimples and hunting secrets in environments that are reminiscent of the good ole' days.

Smooth, fast paced gameplay makes it difficult to put down.
I can't get enough!

I was expecting a fast paced retro FPS shooter, but what I got was a straight up doom clone that doesn't even allow jumping or looking up. I'm all for retro FPS gaming but this is going too far. For a target audience of doom clone players this seems pretty well done so I'm still going to give this a positive review for them, but I have no interest in playing further so I'm refunding.

I actually enjoyed this game. It seems that it's related to Doom games of a 1st person shooter no doubt. I'm honestly surprised not a whole lot of people like this game as much but I think IMO this is a really good game regardless. I'm giving this game barley an 8/10 only because there are really good moments with secrets and new weapons are fun to use for the most part. I say give this game a try. :)

This is one of this new wave of retro shooters that isn't getting enough love. It is closer to Wolfenstein 3D than to to Doom in how it plays and how the maps are laid out, so it does have less verticality and the levels are more maze-like than Doom's usually are, but that's not a problem here. It's been a lot of fun and being able to revisit levels to open up secret levels and find the other secrets you may have missed is a big positive for the game as well.

I've had no bugs, crashes, or other technical issues, and the price is right, so I highly recommend it if you enjoy these kinds of shooters like I do.

Underrated, hidden gem. One I will be returning to time and time again.

There's some of the spirit of games like Blake Stone, DOOM and Wolfenstein 3D here, but it still feels unique. It's probably the fact that somehow it's a boomer shooter that's... relaxing?

This is my new decompression game. Well worth the price of admission, even in early access.

Extraneum is a throwback retro 90s FPS with an emphasis on simple combat, exploration and secret hunting. Are you a fan of Duke Nukem 3D, Quake, or DOOM? You will LOVE this game!

Extraneum's movement feels tight and responsive to play making it a complete joy to run through its levels, especially with the super helpful autorun feature. Having such complete control over your character with these basic yet effective tools means the game always feels fair, despite having some challenging areas. Every death feels like your own fault, but the game is never cruel. There are vending machines with (cute) healthy food to buy, as well as ammo which is purchased using credits dropped by enemies. But no really, can we talk about how god darn cute the food is? 10/10 for this game's art!

There are also plenty of secret rooms. There's around 7 or so secret areas per level, which can be accessed through activating walls identical to DOOM and Wolf 3D. Therefore, if you're particularly struggling for supplies, some careful exploration will yield the rewards you need. There's also 2 secret levels - it would be cool if the exits to the secret levels were indicated to the player (I.E. "you've found a secret exit") just so you're aware and don't subsequently hold off entering them. There's also a bit too much "wall-humping" to find some of the secrets. Whilst this is very typical of the genre, I always find it fairer when there's a misaligned texture or detail to indicate a secret room, which there isn't always.

The game has a delightfully charming cell-shaded aesthetic which makes the visuals both pretty but also really clear. Upon entering areas, you can immediately make sense of your surroundings. The animations are also fluid and built with love and character, I'm especially obsessed with the way doors bounce off the floor when closing, and the attack animations of the melee weapons and gun reloads. Some levels also have haze in the distance and weather effects, which are similarly clean and polished. It may seem like small details, but even the speed lines when using the knife show an exceptional amount of care and personality. For the most part, the game ran like a charm.

Lowkey the game sounds fantastic too. I especially love how your SMG bullets sound different when shooting a metal barrel compared to that of the enemy, and all weapons sound crisp and pack a real punch to them.

Extraneum is an absolute joy to play and I can't wait for the full release. Despite being early access, the dev seems very responsive to the community which bodes very well for the future. As of right now, there is 1 episode available which will likely take you 2-3 hours if you're searching for secrets too. Bonus points for controller accessibility too! Which, although requires binding, played beautifully.

Extraneum is a faithful, charming shooter brimming with personality and passion, and I would easily recommend it!

A really fun retro fps with a lot of pop! I enjoy the overall aesthetic and look of the pixel art. Has some memorable encounters that play off of the level design well. The animations, sound effects, and particles were all very satisfying. I think it would help the navigation of some of these larger levels to have more of that spruced in to make rooms/areas more distinguishable. Excited to see how this game evolves as new episodes are released!

Think of Blake Stone or a good Corridor 7, add a strong, simple visual style with a really fitting soundtrack. Looks good, sounds good, plays good. Is good.

Clean, fun and QUICK retro shooter with a very nice aesthetic.
Respects your time, respects your machine by not crashing and have great performance, respects your skills by achieving a good balance of managing your resources (ammo, money, health and armor) VS how much it gives you to work with. Not once has it felt unfair or not enough in any category.

Definitely something to keep an eye on as it gets developed further and is worth your investment.

I love this from top to bottom. Way beyond normal Early Access quality. Right up there with Exophobia as top notch "Blake Stone-likes" Is that a thing? I JUST MADE IT A THING.

Keep up the good work.

A very polished little retro FPS, for fans of Wolf3D, Doom, Blake Stone, etc. Many secrets to find, monster closets to be ambushed by and chunky weaponry to off your disarmingly cute enemies with. Music's decent too, does a good job setting the atmosphere. Levels are a bit sparse in terms of decoration, but none are overly maze-like. Nails the weapons, the 6 or so I found all felt very satisfying; shotgun takes out two dudes at mid-range, so is Romero approved. Looking forward to the next 2 episodes!

A truly fantastic game!

Extraneum takes what Wolf3D started and proceeds to crank it up to 11. Gorgeous soundtrack, tight gunplay, fast paced action, crazy collectables. It's got it all. What are you waiting for, grab this badass gem!

This game is amazing, I love everything about it. From the music to the sound effects to the way the weapons feel.

Great retro vibes. You know the game is good when you keep coming back to completed levels to find all secrets.

The game also runs great on the Deck.

JD,Ph.D.
JD,Ph.D.

good gaem so far. Enemies are challenging, movement is slick.

The savepoints are a bit tricky. With the level maybe becoming bigger it might be tough to find those. Maybe show em on the map. And consider using more savepoints for the biggest maps.

Difficulty could be edged up just a bit. Once I had a minigun the challenge (on normal) was rather small.

All guns are usefull and fun to use.

Secrets are ok, but the wall hugging a la Project Warlock can get boring at times.

Overall good experience, keep going!

From all I've played, this is one of my favorite games to come out of the recent boom in boomer shooters. A very fast-paced, enjoyable Wolfenstein 3D clone, and stands out among the other ones being released solely for truly feeling like an old-school shooter

SUMMARY: An old-school homage to FPSes, Extraneum is "what you expect" with a few extras. It's in Early Access, so it's not a "Must buy," but may scratch your itch to get a blast from the past. It's well-crafted and stable, if needing a bit more.

Extraneum is part of what seems to be a genre - One to three people make an homage to old FPSes. Its a one-person back-to-the-roots FPS with a few twists on the old formula. So is it worth it?

Well, as of this writing it's Early Access, with only 1/3 of the levels and a need for some polish. So let's see where it is by going to the basics:

THE LEVELS: Levels are big, this is a sprawling hunt-and-seek-the-exit type levels with a HEAVY emphasis on hidden areas and bonuses. If you like exploring and poking walls, its in your wheelhouse.

THE ENEMIES: Enemies are mediocre to good - some are quite challenging. They're not overly imaginative except for a few, but they do require different tactics.

THE WEAPONS: Weapons all seem standard, but noteably each has their use. The original SMG you start with is still important 8 levels in as it is one. Weapon choice makes a big difference as there is no single, ideal weapon (well, yet).

THE GRAPHICS: The graphics are classic pixel graphics, good looking, but in some cases, dull. The level textures are where this is most noteable - too many levels look far too alike right now. Crisp graphics, but in need for some more tilesets.

THE MUSIC AND SOUND: Pretty good, and in fact, a cut above. Good solid soundtrack and sound.

THE EXTRAS: Extraneum goes beyond the original formula by adding several features. There are vending machines to help you out, adding further considerations. There are permanent artifacts you can find to boost your game. Finally, there is the ability to revisit levels after exploring them to search for more secrets or re-find important loot.

GENERAL: Extraneum is polished, stable, and runs well. Overall it's a quality product, especially in Early Access.

So is it worth it? I'd say Extraneum is there as something to scratch a specific itch - and if you like to support said scratching in Early Access. It's a sincere effort that excels in a few areas while having no major downsides, and giving feedback will doubtless help it.

At this time, I don't think of it as a Must Buy. It's currently "if it interests you" and "if you want to scratch your old-school itch" But keep an eye on it, it may just become more. In fact, it's surprisingly polished right now.
