EARLY ACCESS REVIEW

I am generally not one for the whole survival, crafting, thing. I am much more interested in base building/management games.

Luckily for me, outside of the irritation generated by having to deal with oxygen and food, which is a minor inconvenience, this game is much more a game of base building and management than it is of survival, and even crafting (though crafting is for certain a core element of the game).

Once you get past the basics... electricity, oxygen, food... you are left with the goal of building a starship, which is a pretty significant goal. And to do so efficiently, you must leverage the power of automation.

You manage the process of digging up the necessary materials, transporting them to a storage facility, and then removing them from that facility in order to turn them in to ingots, plates and gears to craft the next elements of your base, or star ship.

The game gets you in to the flow quickly - though the tutorials need some tweaking. They break immersion and are incredibly irritating and seemingly unavoidable. Since they are delivered through, and stored as some form of email, simply notifying the user of new tutorial content would be highly preferable.

Within two hours, you are, however deep in the process of trying to build a mighty automated infrastructure, and figuring out why your robot arms are tossing your newly crafted ingots 20 yards away from where you want it.

The game is intelligently designed, and presumably combat and other threats will present themselves as you expand your search for the necessary elements for your next goal.

There are no lack of bugs - however... placing a battery may teleport you at high speed a good 100 yards away from your base for not obvious reason. Indeed, random teleportation results are common and irritating, but overall not game breaking as everything seems to be as you left it when you finally make it back to base.

The night-time element is just annoying. I get it's "value" to the game in terms of simulation and immersion, but it does nothing but encourage you to stand near your oxygen generator. A way of speeding up time at night might be a very nice feature for those who just don't plan to do much while the outside is dark.

The controls are a little bit of an "acquired" taste. A reckless player may well delete their storage facility and every one of those hard-earned items. Deletion should not be possible on an item that contains other items. This is a simple fix and one I am shocked the developer didn't consider.

Overall, though, the game is a reasonably well-designed and executed, though I would wait for a sale where it's closer to $10 than $20 in it's current state. The full retail price may well be worth it when the game goes to final release, but this early access version is hard to justify more than the $10-12 range.

Absolutely enjoying this game. The art assets are fantastic. I really like the futuristic designs and shapes of the models. Another thing I REALLY like is the fact that thus far it is not about the GRIND to get the things you need in order to build those wonderful looking structures. I envision making expansive colonies and outpost on different planets. Really looking forward to whats to come with this one. Also love the fact that I do not have to be connected to the internet in order to play this game. Please, what ever you do DEVS if you are reading this, do not change that aspect. Make multiplayer if you must, but leave in the solo aspect for those such as myself who never play multiplayer. Hoping that you will at some point add the ability to MOD ever aspect of the game. I am the type that loves to modify games to suite my style of play. Thank you DEVS for the fun thus far! Also for any contemplating the purchase of this game based on reviews, do not let my play time statistics fool you because I always play my games offline.

Edit: Another thing I would like to add about this game that I like is the fact that the DEVS have implemented an awesome save and load paradigm. This game saves and loads so much faster than some games I have recently purchaed. What ever you the DEVS are doing that makes that possible, keep up the fantastic work.

For those who want longer days and shorter nights, there is a console command you can use:

SetDurationInSecondsDay x or SetDurationInSecondsNight x

where x is the number of seconds you want the duration to be. For examble:

SetDurationInSecondsDay 50000 would give you about 13.8 hours of daylight.

Developers keep up the fabulous work.

The game is in EARLY ACCESS and it's a little rough getting started. The "tutorial", for example, is just some sparse documentation that pops up periodically, not tied in any way to what you're doing in-game.

As such, it took me a little while to realize that this is Factorio in 3D. If you don't know Factorio, go buy it and play it right now (it's not yet on Steam). With a foundation of playing Factorio, this game is an enormously fun 3D upgrade to it. If you like building automated factories and resource management, definitely get this game. There's a lot of work to be done on it and hopefully the developers realize the amazing vision here!

Narth4x
Narth4x

The graphics need to be improved, the mechanics need to be improved, the clunkiness needs to be dealt with and the lack of a helpful tutorial cripples gameplay from the start. The game needs more elegance, user-frieandlyness, and an overall rethinking to the highest degree. The building mechanics are quite frustrating with some blocks and the hints and tips pop-ups you get randomly pull you out of whatever you were about to craft.

One of the biggest mistakes of my life
go buy big pharma or something

UPDATE: It's been more than a year since I wrote this review, and the "many things wrong with this game" still stands. The game has new features, but with old bugs still around, it just makes things worse. Save your money and maybe give it another year.

--
I recommend you to watchlist/follow this game and track its progress. But I can't recommend a purchase at the moment.
There's many things right with the game, and many things wrong. I hope I can clarify them in this review.
Note that it is definitely early to judge, but not early enough to get a good intuition about the game's direction - which is what worries the most.
--

Farlight Explorers is best described as a 3D Survival Factorio (with smaller production scale). Your goal is to guarantee your survival by building your life support systems - get Electricity to make Water, get Water and Electricity to make Oxygen and Food.
Your goal is also to extract the most ore from the planet's veins, and build your base and spaceship in order to explore space - there's currently no more goals due to the early state of the game, but more are planned.

My comments about aspects of the game:
- GRAPHICS: The game looks amazing for a single-man team. The artist deserves praise - I really love his style.

- SOUND: There's a single song which loops, and the sound is fine but needs mastering. When turrets fire, they'll definitely give you a heart attack.

- INTERFACE: The interface is fine and easy to understand, but could do with a lot of work. There's an insane amount of typos, and building machines is not really symmetrical as one might expect (so it's very OCD unfriendly, beware :P)

- BUGS: There's the usual bugs, but you can get around them by making saves or reloading an autosave. I didn't encounter any game-breaking or save-corrupting bug, though, which is good. Some bugs are really worrying, currently. Like using conveyor as you would in Factorio (or as the game makes you feel free to use) will slow your game below 10 FPS, and that's worrying giving that this should be one of the main parts of the game: building machines and transport systems.

About the gameplay:
- BUILDING uses the "snap" system a lot of 3D games use nowadays. Build a floor, then you can "snap" the next floor tile to the existant one. However, building right now can be really annoying and very time consuming due to the "snapping" bugging around. Building your SPACESHIP follows the same system, which makes it very customizable and cool (and VERY time consuming).

- RESOURCE GATHERING AND MACHINES: The planets have Ore Veins which you can build automated Extractors in. Then make use of robot arms and conveyors to take the ore to Furnaces to make Ingots. Then to Hydraulic Presses to make Plates. And to another Hydraulic Press to make Gears.
It looks really good and feels really satisfying when you're done building, but it is rather time-consuming and buggy.

- SURVIVAL: The constant need for oxygen will make you want to spread Oxygen Dispensers all around your base - and you can do that. Having this survival requirement is pretty cool and very interesting in the beginning - if you don't build fast enough, you'll end up dead.

- SPACESHIP: There's no reason to fly your own space ship at the moment - it currently works more like a teleport. You can't fly in space, and your ship jumps directly between planets. You CAN "plug" your Spaceship into a base and share electricity/water/oxygen with it, which is great...but is too much work, and you'd be better off building the necessary buildings on the ground instead. So maybe it will become more useful at a later time.

- EXPLORATION: There's different types of planets, but most of them have a limited area. So won't be exploring whole planets, but small parts of them. However, with a big number of planets, this won't be an issue, but it's good pointing out.
Some resources are only available on some planets, and that's really cool. It would be amazing in the future to transport resources between planets and different bases!

CONCLUSION:
There's a ton of potential in Farlight Explorers, there's no denying. The game went through a great transformation this year, which made it look really good. The developer is definitely interested in developing it.
It looks nice, it plays nice, it feels nice. But that's not enough when talking about Early Access titles.

There's two reasons I cannot recommend buying it. First, it's too early to believe it will be made into a full game.
Second, because there's no clear direction or road map for the game.
It could become an actual 3D Survival Factorio, or something much more limited and not as freeform as expected.
This would mean you'd be investing in something expecting a certain game, and end up with something completely different. It's dangerous, and hard to trust in.
There are suggestion lists and all that, but all organized and discussed by players. The dev does read and reply, but still there's no guarantee what will be done and what won't.

So I do recommend for you to watch it. All that I said above can be invalidated at any moment. A clear roadmap and direction would make it MUCH easier to trust in the developer's vision and tag along with him, but the best advice is to watch it from a distance right now.
All the best for the developer, though - I'd love to see this becoming successful.

Thanks for reading!

I really dont see how someone can give this a bad review. It is a really fun game from the time I have spent playing it. Only thing is making sure everything is attached right is my only annoyance. Also the placing of different parts could be a little smoother because everything is janky atm. If the devs stick with this then its gonna be really great

I want to see so much more with this game I hope the devs never quit. The factory automation stuff is amazing and at times can feel a bit like Infinifactory.

The rest of the game however is a bit lacking. The planets are very simple, there's no NPCs, and no challenges other than building a factory and a ship. For a game that has "Explorers" in the title you'd think that exploring would be an integral part of the game, but it's not. Exploring is about as dull as this game gets.

In about 4 and a half hours of gameplay I managed to build a very simple ship, get to another planet, harvest some "rare" ores, and crash my ship completely destroying it. All in all, not bad and worth the four and a half hours I spent on it. Now the game will sit in my library collecting dust waiting for major updates.

this is a great game i recomend it if you like to play games as they are being developed if not i would say to wait a little bit till he adds some more features in and gets it a little more polished which i would say 3-4 months but i have too say he has made a lot of progress on this since i have bought this the day it came out on steam. it is very fun and has a lot of good potential.

Since my first review on august 24 their has been many new implemented things into the game which continue to add and improve this game. Now this game has a long way to go still but as long as it keeps getting updated and stays on track its potential will in time turn into a great game.

Nightwolf

For those that are into hardcore survival with a space theme this game is not quite what you are looking for at the moment, think space engineers but less complicated. Still it does fill a unqiue niche in the genre and even in its current alpha state is extremely addictive. If you are a early access support of games this is definitely a jewel to have in your library.

What it does right.
- Being able to hop from planet to planet with realtive ease is a beautiful and sadly rare thing amongst games of this genre but Farlight pulls it off.

- MINING! omg the countless hours you spend whiddling away for resources to build your next stick! Not here pal, mining is automatic, just plop down a extraction drill, throw in some power and let the goodtimes roll. It should be noted that you can still mine by hand faster than a extraction drilling platform initially. but put 10 or 15 of these puppies up and being able to focus on building is a huge plus in this game espcially when the monotony of placing pipes and wires and conveyor belts takes up a considerably chunk of time.

- Production is pretty streamlined at the moment. X amount of water and power will get you pretty much everywhere so the only real micromanaging is making sure you have ample amount of supplies.

- Bugs, the dev works hard at crushing game bugs as you can follow in the forums. Surprisingly enough for a EA game i have only once ever had a game crashing bug, Most have been minor annoyances that you can write off as early access.

What the game still needs work on:

- Content. At the moment the only real goal is to make a huge production ship capable of making everything and fly to planet to planet strip mining the planets dry which does not take long, maybe 5 hours if you are new to the game. Then thats it, end game. If i understand right there is only one guy making this and while hes peddling his production content out fast as his little legs can move, impressively so, being able to crank out more for a very creative game would help him generate a larger fan base. Maybe hire one or two people extra.

Too much bug. Graphix issue that should not exist on a game for sale in 2015. You jsut turn camera, and you can see galaxies appear and disapear ( i guess i see the map in my inventory .. maybe ) rocks disapear. You mine and stuff get stuck in the air ( copper )... I think this game should had more work before coming out. Lot;s of great idea in it ( I love Factorio and hoping see all i can do in Factorio in 3d first person.... was not what i got... )

Just could not get on with the control system for the game. It seems counter-intuitive, or at least, ill thought out. To be honest, that made it so hard (for me) to play the game, that its hard to tell whether there is a good game hidden underneath. I guess for those able to persist with the controls, you will be rewarded,
I hope that the dev will look at this in future updates, and this may be a game I have another look at in a few months time. But for now, I can't recommend it.

Militia

I cannot recommend this game in its current state. I spent over 2 hours building a base. I hooked things up to the grid and it seemed to be working fine, but then the batteries were not supplying enough power for the entire base (no big deal). When morning came around, the machines that were unpowered at night due to the lack of batteries would not restart. I tried deleting and replacing wires, even deleting and replacing the machines themselves, but they would not restart. The wires said I had a positive charge.

Then when I quit the game and came back later, my game loads to a black screen. I can't see anything. When I open the inventory, it flashes for a split second then disappears. So now my saved game is useless. This was released for even Early Access far too early on.

This game has an amazing potential to be awesome. It is not there yet, and being developed by one person. I'm not sure how much hope I can have, for how far this game can go. I do recommend the game especially durring the sale, because of the potential. Only in your into early access games, and willing to take a risk.

Early Access Review - Good game premise, but (for me at least) an absolutely terrible interface made it unpleasant to play. Controls were obscure and non-intuitive. I'm a huge fan of the Outpost-style space explorer and colony building games, but this just didn't do anything for me, and the interface made it not worth the hassle. At the point that I tried it, the graphics were really, really sub-par, and the translation to English was really lacking as well. Perhaps later, but not recommended right now.

This game is really uniqe in my opinion, being able to construct a base how you want it, watching out for metoir strikes all the time, building robotics that can ferry your drilled resources to holding tanks or directly into refinarys. then when you have enough build a space ship and move to new worlds to do this. I would recomend 8/10

Ok, big area of frustration. There are two games. The new version and old version. It took me about 4 hours of gameplay before realizing most construction materials don't unlock after a time.... they simply don't exist in the "new version".

This game is so underdeveloped that it shouldn't even be purchasable as early access. I would NOT recommend it to anyone until it's a LOT closer to completion.

This review is posted a bit after the change to the Unreal 4 Engine.
The developers should really give priority to polish the UI, since is the first impresion for a video game. As of now the ui doesn't feel "fluid" making it a layer that distracts new players from enjoying the game expirience.
The gameplay concept of building planetary outposts is a great project to take on and leaves a huge space for improvement i would like to commend the dev for taking it on.
The content rigth now is plenty and enjoyable.
The visuals and sounds make an outstanding effort to be consistent to the gameplay.

If you like building bases, space, resource gathering and crafting and survival. this game sticks to that formula. And i recommend to stick to it for the long haul. I know i will ;) .

I like this game, because it is not an easy one. It is hard to build a base, you have to think on the resources you have to make progress on your production. Make me a lot of fun to research how to a do a thing, a factory, wires, re-desing. It is very glorius to see your base from the jetpack, give it a try !

I was very interested in this game but after 1 hour of coming to grips with it I saved progress. Since then every attempt to restart the game has produced a crash. There is no support I can find with developer and Steam is their normal dilatory self. Rather than wait for support which may not materialise I have requested refund. As final attempt i removed local content and reinstalled game. Steam is now asking me to purchase what is already in Games Library

I was not sure at first to buy this game or not, but after reading alot of the developper post, and on the forum, I do believe that after that much time, updating the engine, and still dedicating himself with updates, once couple weeks, by adding a lot of content and bug fixing, this will be a great game that people will be talking about.

Any fan of Factorio will like this game; it is the same ressource, management, survival feeling but in 3D! After putting +30 hours in my first week, I cannot wait for the next update to discover what will be delivered.

The endgame require majors steps to be able to accomplish it and before you know it, you will see yourself immerged in this 3D world, building your base to provide everything you need to craft the next component. What is amazing, is this feeling of building the "facility", and even if this was criticised by some people, I did really enjoyed putting every single piece of wire or water pipe under the fondation, or in the roof of my "rafinery", oh and dont forget the air vent if you dont want to run out of oxygen!

To summarize: If you can pass by the bugs, that you like Factorio, and would like to try it in 3D, than this game will take couples of hours from you ! I am sure this will be a blast once completed!

It's kind of like an Early Access 3D FPS Factorio, without the Alien Insects.

It's not quite there yet. Lots of bugs. Random crashes. Missing content. ( Early-Access ) It can get a bit grindy at times. But I have seen regular updates, so there is hope.

For me? $15 - $20 is the price I pay to go the movies for a couple hours entertainment. I figure I got my moneys worth out of this game. So as long as they keep working on it, I'll give it a thumbs up.

That said, If $15 is your entire gaming budget for awhile... I would suggest not buying this one right away. It needs to cook a little longer.

Tried it a few times, nothing has really changed - mostly unplayable, the tutorial is a weird mess that interupts what your doing and doesnt explain anything that well - the UI is halfway broken, sometimes you open a box by select clicking on it, sometimes double click, sometimes you need to press F - the same goes for closing the window again - trial and error and its not the same every time. Sometimes you cant place items in the quick slots, right click when using an item and you "deselect" that tool your using.

The star/galaxy map is moved around with the keyboard - but you cant select galaxies/planets with keys - no, you need to press the left click button. But the mouse cant move anything?!? But... Why?!?

Day and night is litterally - now its day and BLINK, lights out, now its night?!?

Build menu in inventory is awkward and doesnt really make much sense. And when placing the build items, how to connect them doesnt make much sense either.

The idea is great, a great mix of Factorio with fps/survival elements - but its been nearly a year since i first tried this out and it still lacks immensly in playability and its still littered with bugs and really needs a massive overhaul of the way things work.

Therefore - wait around, follow it and see what happens. Since its taken so long to become barely playable, im not optimistic about seeing it developed fully. Stay clear for now

good and bad new review 1 year almost 2 after first < I NO LONGER RECOMEND

good
the game has grate pertential and style and design aspects you can build a base a colony mess with selling buying chemicals oil water power and so on it legit has everything

bad
so for me i can no longer play this game becuase while i love the game im sick of being let down by the game < while the maker posts updates on and off after loads of time has passed the maker doesnt really listen to the actual issue he just finds bypasses that doesnt really fix the issue > issues are> turrets for astroids barely work even if u have 30 and a small base so u will legit lose all ur work after a while making the game pointleses > theres always a power issue on and off > strangers help you in the disscusions while the maker doesnt even comment or read disscusions > and now on and off theres a crash that happens saying fatal error that many people have had yet the maker doesnt even mention it even though people are talking about the issues

all in all grate pertential but the maker of the game lets the game down becuase after 1 or 2 years i have the same issues practically and im no longer gonna fall for the game and then find out my entire time is wasted becuase the maker couldnt fix basic issues that exsisted 2 or 1 plus years before now and i get its early accsess but to have the same issues 2 or 1 plus years later come on ??

side note sorry if i seem mad af but its really dissapointing specially when u pay loads of money and support the maker and maybe in the future ill change my review but the issues listed sooo make me mad

Update 1/20/22: This game has been abandoned. The dev has moved on to a new one

Original Review:

TLDR: For most people, I would put this game in the "watch and wait" category, but if the dev (thats right, singular!!) continues on the current path, I forsee a pretty bright future for this one. It might take a while to get there though. I wish there was a sideways thumb button!

I added an update at the bottom for anyone who is interested.

I deleted my old review because it was seriously outdated and this will be just a short and to the point review. I seriously loved the original concept and direction this game had. It was a fun builder/survival game, kind of like a 3D factorio. But over the course of the last year or so, things have gotten out of whack. The game has a different vibe now, and more content keeps getting added before issues with the game get fixed. At this rate, it will end up going the way of other EA titles: tons of potential, but poor execution and an overall very mediocre game

Let it be known that I will gladly change my review if this changes in the future. I have mad respect for this dev (thats right, singular) because he works harder than some entire teams of devs. But unfortunately my respect for the deveoper isn't enough for me to actually recommend this game. I truly hope that changes in the future though

UPDATE (6/16/17)

I really wish there was a sideway thumb button. Because I'm right in between at the moment. Since my last edit on this review, there have been some pretty good polishing and bugfix efforts on the devs part. And updates have continued to come out pretty regularly. At the moment, I am still going to leave this as a thumbs down. However, if the dev continues to focus more on fixes/polishing now and then adding new content later on, then I forsee a very great future for this game. It might take a while, but I think that if the dev sticks with it (which, I have no evidence suggesting that he will abandon us) then we should one day have a very cool 3D Factorio type game. For now I will continue to watch, wait, and every few updates I'll retest it out

A good factory builder. You can combine buildings for space and to mix their functions. For instance, place a storage bin partially inside the model of a mining drill will deposit the ore directly into that storage. I enjoy the art style, and the noises everything makes. Haven't gotten past building a train, but from how much I play, it's a good addition to a factory collection.

While I'm very interested in playing his game I have encountered a snag. No matter what I do I cannot put anything into any of the 9 bottom user slots for use!! This problem basically stops you from playing. If you try different keys or mouse clicks to put say the laser drill into the slots you end up crashing the game. So either the tutorial is not sufficent or the game has issues. Might want to wait for a while before purchasing it.

This game can be very intereting i think and good. But it is becoming very frustrating. items don't connect corretly i feel. buildings shouldn't overlap. i will contineu to play because it has a lot to offer.

Bought it quite a while ago, and it was unplayable.

Now i came back to it and the game is amazing. If you like factorio, this is basically the 3D version with more stuff included. The developer keeps his promises and actively listens to the community.

I'd say this game is worth buying, especially since the game keeps evolving constantlly.
Great work dev's!

Early Access Alert: Opinion is subject to change during development.

Worth It? YES

LIKES

    • Automating ore extraction and manufacturing facilities is fun!
    • Four different game modes to customize the player experience
    • The tutorial eases you into gameplay mechanics
    • Lots of content – numerous planets to visit, resources to mine and production buildings to create
    • The jetpack makes it easy to quickly fly between buildings and resource nodes
    • Audible alerts when you are low on food and oxygen is a nice touch
    • The graphics are nice and detailed
    • Little graphical details like shell casings hitting the ground as your auto-turrets fire at enemies

DISLIKES

    • Navigating between some build menus is tedious
    • Tooltips need more detail. When industry is planet wide, “object destroyed by asteroid” is not sufficient to find and repair the issue
    • Placing some smaller items, like pipes or wires, can be clunky

The Final Word

Farlight Explorers is what I like to call an “open-galaxy sandbox”. At this stage of development there is more than enough to keep you busy. Whether that is mining resources, building expansive supply chains, fighting off jelly monsters or selecting your next planet to colonize.

It looks so good and based on positive reviews, I purchased this game. After about 10 minutes game play, I requested a refund. This game is not ready to be released in any form. JMHO. I'll watch it and see what changes but in it's current state, I would not recommend it to anyone.

As always, this game is in early access. Only purchase this game if you want to play it in the state that it is in. Remember this. After playing this game briefly, I can see the potential and since it was on sale at the time that I'm writing this. I figured to post up something.

I purchased this because I looked up on YouTube for any recent videos of this game, and I found some from a couple years ago. So I figured I'd give this game a shot, since it's been a while that this has been in early access.

I'm still learning this game, but the controls aren't too shabby, and the graphics seem good for what the game is. The interface could use a bit of work, and an annoying behavior is every so often when you are in an inventory screen, and you press esc to get out of it, it brings up the menus sometimes.

Through it's qwirks, I feel this game is fun and will definitely occupy many hours of time. I'll update this after I've played for a bunch of hours.

JUL 2017

This game has a lot of potential. My guess is that it's someone's passion project, as the updates have been slow but steady since it first came out on Early Access.

----------
The short version:

It's a little like factorio but in 3D and with far less enemies. The ideas are very similar: Extract, Refine, Assemble, Research. Find new (different) resources and repeat. There is a pseudo-storyline which will likely be expanded on later, and additional game mechanics like founding and creating your own colonies, and small-scale military conflicts.

PROS
- Lots of depth. I'm ~20 hours in and I'm only just ready to leave the first planet.
- No really. Content-wise, especially if you're an efficiency fanatic like me, these elements will probably see you get your money's worth.
- Trains
- Building automated factories to achieve your goals
- Grind*

CONS
- There are some bugs, and some people have crashes. I've encountered one crash, due to a buggy machine (fixed when I removed it).
- Placement of certain wires and pipes can be fiddly and time-consuming, no idea if this will change in future
- Overall, it's a bit rough around the edges, especially the interface
- Grind*

*Love it or hate it, I guess!

---------
Long version:

There are three possible starts, and on each one you can choose anything between full creative and full survival with options in between:
1. From scratch. Empty galaxy.
2. Someone built a Singularity Gate, so colonies are available to build. Trade is possible.
3. Colonies, Trade, and Battles are all available from the start.

If you start from scratch, you're on your own. You have to extract resources, set up machines to transport and refine them, and assemble them into intermediate (construction) products, or components for research. The research machines in particular require recipes that require 4-6 machines for one ingredient, so be prepared for some trial and error while you work out where the possible bottlenecks are.

Once you've peaked on the first planet, you'll have to explore other planets to get additional materials. You'll normally start on an Iron/Copper/Coal planet, and have to venture elsewhere for things like Titanium, Vanadium, Oil etc.

I like this mechanic, as by the time you've assembled a spaceship, fuelled it and done enough research to start the tech tree, you've probably created a spaghetti mess that you'll be happy to leave behind. So, grab your essential resources and set off for another planet! Start again if you want, or just extract and refine what you need and return it to your starting planet. It's up to you :)

If you're starting from scratch, the idea is to get enough resources to build a singularity gate to allow colonists into your galaxy. This in turn opens up the colony building, which looks like another game in itself. Truthfully, I've yet to build the gate and explore this mechanic, as well as the battle mechanics that come even further into the game.

But having played this far, I like what I see. Yes, it's rough around the edges. There are fiddly things that could be easier, the interface is a little clunky, and you may or may not experience crashes. But if you like Factorio, and crafting games, and feel like branching out and trying something different, then I can't really argue with the price that this is being offered at.

As I've said, it looks like someone's passion project. It appears to be a single person developing this game, and it's been updated not often, but fairly consistently since release. You might not be able to get over the interface snags at first - I know I struggled. But it was worth the effort, and I'm glad I fired this up again to see how it was doing.

7/10 and I look forward to seeing what happens with this in the future.
(6/10 if you can't get over fiddly interfaces)

a 3d fps factorio. less refined enemies atm. but I love the galaxy/planets and the ship building idea. I would love to see that implemented in factorio, along with planets that have different resources just like this game. With some time, this can be a truly amazing game rivaling or exceeding factorio. if I remember correctly this even came out in EA long before factorio did. Definetly someones passion project.

A nice little game, lots to do and learn. Sure it still needs updates but then you be hard pushed to find a game that does not. Value for money if you play and do as much as you can, some nice ideas and objects.

Ok, I am an old gamer. I have been playing games for a long time ( 30+ years). Most recently I have adopted alot of early access games. Farlight being the most recent.

Although the overall rating on this is mixed you will note that most of the recent reviews are positive. Most of the negative reviews are about content, bugs and crashing. "It's early access!!!"

Now on to my experience, if you are familiar with Factorio and like the concept you will most likely enjoy this game as well. I will give a "+" for the graphics over Factorio's 2D sprites. The environmental models need some work but over all satisfactory for the current state of the game. Mechanics take some getting used to, and the help screens could be written better. There is a nice guide available that is a must read to get you started.

I bought the game on sale (recommended), at full price I am not sure I would say you get your moneys worth. If you adopt the attitude that you are going to encounter bugs, and crashes - it's pretty good. Has a decent concept with tons of potential. The game gets updates regularly and the developer seems keen on getting feedback and improving the title.

I give this a thumbs up, and look forward to seeing more. Remember it's early access so you will, and I did run into bugs and crashes. I offer my support to this title because I think it has some promise and will keep an eye on it as it develops.

Lets avoid beating around the bush.

This is factorio in three dimensions, it's ugly, poorly optimised with a horrible UI and some awful design choices.

That being said, the gameplay is still the same as factorio with an entire new plane to craft in, if you loved making amazing factories in that, you are going to love this.

Caveat: The one issue I do have with this game is that you have to wire up individual buildings and the wires take up considerable space rather than being inlaid into blocks. Definately check out videos before you buy because in my opinion it looks awful but I see myself getting a lot of fun out of this game.

New Information (as of 10/20/2019)
Started a new game, put 4 hours into it. The game is more responsive, there have been improvements in the power system and kits. Saved game twice on my own. Lost about 15 minutes with a fatal crash error. Would be nice to see an auto-backup and let me pick the frequency so you don't lose as much when things crash. Game is worth the cost, dev appears to be a one man show working on things in his leisure. Going to change from negative to positive. Wish there was middle ground, I would select that.

New Information (as of 1/10/2018)
I was impressed for awhile. Put 60 hours into it. As you can see the Dev has done nothing since November except delete complaint post after post. I subscribe to Farlight Explorers Discussions and I see more "deleted" posts from people that really need help with broken things than I ever see answers. The Dev has gone silent and the player base has to answer if they can. Feels like this game is now abandon...

Old Review:
Has some similarities to Space Engineers, Factorio, Factory Engineer, and Fortress Craft. I like the 3-D approach. Feels a little more relaistic than Fortress Craft. You can totally automate your mining/extraction into a forge. Move items from the forges to the presses, then into the manufacturing machinery and so on. You eventually build research labs and start researching fuel, spaceports then on to spaceships. I believe I should be building my spaceship tomorrow in search of deploying the singularity gate.

Its EA, so you have to take that into account, but there are no game stoppers, its just text, turorial, and a few minor mis-alignment things. This game is extremely solid, no crashes on 3 seperate types of systems. My hat is off to the developer, keep it up, this game will become very popular amongst the builders / explorers / survival game lovers. With Elon Musk talking about going to Mars, you can kind of live it now in the digital world.

Built the ship (the default one). Had to hook up all the pipes & wires so it could fly. Also had to get water, and fuel into to so it could fly. There must be a better way than just running pipes from the base to the ship, but I could not figure anything else out, so that is what I did. Hit the warp drive, and I was in space. Selected a system with a planet that had oil, and landed there. Now I am pumping oil into the oil tanks, but again, its all direct connect. I need some way of transfering to the ship without direct connecting the pipes. I will update as I learn more.

I’m getting a return on this game, like constructing a well-put-together production line gives out the success buzz of achievement. I’ve never play a factorio style game before and I was pleasantly surprise how quickly I got into building bigger, more efficient, more complex and multilevel production lines.

You start off building and setting up an oxygen and food generator, connecting power and plumping and really that’s all the survival element there is. From there you build into oar extraction and your first production lines and then you start to build up your infrastructure to include tech point’s production lines, spaceport, ship and producing materials for the galaxy gateway, a little pre-planning is wise. The last degree is to build your own colony with colonists, so I believe there’s an adequate amount of content.

Some cons, I think mostly on the to-do-list, like the need for more game saves but just minor stuff really. I don’t mind EA since the game is playable and to me it means that the developer is still developing and there is a whole lot of room and potential for the developer to explore and expand on.

In classic mode there’s some figuring out of what to do next stuff, like working backwards from the options to find out what you can or should build next.

The game first person and third person aesthetic makes it easy to mine, construct and produce materials for building capital of your own design. Infrastructure over infrastructure won’t suit full on action craving players but maybe a strategist style candidate, if that’s you.

This game differs from usual piece placement type in that there’s no auto utilities connection, so you have to build the infrastructure as you go along, thus inspiring your intellect.

The developers have fostered a contemporary genre and all in all a spiffing “playable” game for this genre type.

Currently its buggy, clunky, and lacks a lot of polish.
The ideas are there, but it requires a lot more developer love in all aspects of the game (gameplay, UI, stability, language, key bindings, etc)
Given the long development time already, I do not assume this will soon change.

Only for the hard core fans of the genre... You might get some enjoyment out of it for a couple of hours but you'll have to avoid the temptation to quit in the early game because of the clunky experience.

Sadly, my savegame starts to continously Crash to Desktop... With no real clue how I can avoid it.
I might reload a game when updates arrive... I'll see how or if this evolves further.

Some other things to consider for the developer:
* on start game, everything is available in the build menu. There is no gradual unlocking of tech, which could offer a better feeling of progression, e.g; advancing the game and could reduce early confusion on what to build first.
* Personally I didn't like the fully built stations available as well from the start of the game
* Crafting is hidden behind one inventory key, and then a click. There doesn't seem to be a shortcut to go to crafting right away.
* juggling with different variants of one object (transport tubes, wires: left, right, up, down, t-junctions, bends, etc) is cumbersome, especially since you have a limited inventory, see how empyrion or stationeers allows you to build, from one object, different configurations of the same object
* conveyors don't make much sense, except in limited scenarios because you actually tell people to use transport tubes instead and warn that the game has issues with it.

I'm giving this a hesitant "Recommend" because I want to support development of this type of game. It is totally playable in its current state but there are some fairly serious UI issues that make it annoying to get deep into. Nothing gamebreaking but annoying. Development seems to have slowed, which is not surprising given it's a single developer. It's one of those games that really should be amazing but just isn't quite there yet and I am not totally confident it will ever get there. Anyway, in its current state it's enjoyable if you can get past some of the minor annoyances that have been adeptly pointed out by other reviewers. I personally have no regrets purchasing it, but if the $15 is a big deal to you, you should probably put it on your "follow" list and wait until it's more developed.

(+++)
Lovely graphics, excellent game concept, good performance, no serious bugs so far.

(---)
Annoying object placement/movement. Lack of direction for new players. Lack of UI polish in places. General "unfinished" feel.

Red Cat

I'll make this short because I believe in a short, to the point review.
First off, do I recommend the game to others? No!
I've put in more than enough time on this thing. Its complex enough that you have to figure out stuff on your own, very clunky in that its a total mess of stuff all over the place. Wires, pipes cross over everywhere. It takes hours just managing that when you have a fairly large factory up and running.
Some things are laughably bad, like day/night cycle, lighting in general, player movement, random meteroid impacts, structure placement. Flashy construction, hilarious structure deletion.
Could you say this is a game to waste hours doing very tedious management? Sure.
Its also very buggy....
The language is that of a 10 year old non-English speaker with elementary grasp of English.
It lacks polish, and for a game being out this long one would expect improvements, rather its making it more and more cluttered.
Worth the price? No not in my opinion.
It does have a storyline to it, I don't like it, others might.
Might it get better? Have pretty much... no.

A very pretty 3D Clone of factorio.. but after a while it ends with a fatal error.
If you restart the game the fatal error continues coming in shorter periods of time..

I am sure I cant recommend this game with this fatal error returning so often.

But nonetheless i want to point out that i really like the idea of factorio going 3D.
Without the fatal error it is about as much fun as factorio.

This game would be amazing if some real money got injected into it somehow.

It's a bit rough around the edges as far as polish and attention to detail are concerned, but it has some interesting facets, such as a complex technology tree and the ability to customize whether you want to deal with physical survival and/or materials harvesting in your game session.

It's very much akin to a 3D Factorio experience, but Factorio also has a squad of people developing it for their full time jobs. I'm very impressed with what such a small team has been able to accomplish with so little resources. Hope the developer continues to release expansions and improvements to this game.

Pneumo

Its been a year or so since i bought the game. I've came back to see alot of changes, but im uncertian to if theyre for the better.

The things you craft mean that you need to build other items first before 'unlocking' new items- for instance- your inventory is reaaaaaally small. So, i want to create a container... however- you need to, even hough you have a small machine to make the item- craft multiple items like an energy source, electrical connector and some other irrelavent item before you can unlock the container- of which is made by a machine that doesnt require the items mentioned before. This means youre constantle juggling and dropping resources that you'll need later in order to create space for resources you need to create the other items....

Also, getting to be able to craft just a bloody wall requires many other items to be made, again irrelivant items before you can 'unlock' walls. The walls and containers, base items dont require machines to make them...

The game is a headache. 3 hours later, and ive got a 9 square foundation built and four corner walls, after irrelavent and non helping 'tutorial' part of the game is non skippable therefor meaning starting a new game means a half hour tutorial, yet for more complex creations - you are told to 'view help pages f1-f5' and theyre useless, and lack information, yet the tutorial is half hour long?- many machines and currently useless items to unlock the simple needed items, wasted resources and time.

The annoying part is i want to get to the point where i can craft vehicles and enjoy the good parts of the game that're in the video, but it looks like its going to take forever to get there.

Pull your pants up devs- and get someone to play your game and realise how stupid the beginning part of the game is.

This game hasn't really updated at all. To anyone wanting to buy this game, just go somewhere else. The UI is still the same from a few years ago. The charactor movement is terrible, try to select anything from the inventory disappears.

I was really hoping that this would grow and evolve into a better version, if I just gave this enough time. Three years later, it hasn't.

So I'm stepping down and away from this game, and let it go.

Hell no. Game is janky as all hell. Four out of five times I launched it, my character was impaled on some thorny branch the second I loaded a planet. This kind of bums me out to have to refund and give a thumbs down, but here we are :( Damn, I was so excited for this one.

You know how sometimes in school, you would try your best and end up with terrible results, but your teacher gives you a good mark because you showed alot of improvement? That's kinda the way I'm giving this the thumbs up for this game.

I've had this game in my library for years, and never been able to play more than a few hours before rage-quitting. And yet every time I picked it back up, the issue that drove me off had been fixed. Last time it was power networks getting mixed up every time the solar panels kicked on/off. I came back today and saw it was working. But now my game is crashing every time I get more than a few minute in. The save file is years old, i'll start a new one. So is the game playable? Meh. Maybe it gets better later in the game, but fighting 3d rotation issues every time you place a meter of pipe is a pain now. But every issue i've ever found was (eventually) fixed.

If this game looks good to you, make sure you've looked at factorio, factory town, satisfactory, or any of those before sinking money into this, because honestly, i think they're better. On the other hand, there's lots of abandoned early access games out there, and it seems like this dev stuck with it. And in an under developed market of factory games, we need every respectable developer we can get.

Ok I had to give this game a try as it sounded interesting. If this game was 6 months to a year into Early Access I would say buy it as it is worth it. This is suppose to be a completed game and does not feel like. it.

There are even some warning signs. In the story text pages there are many typos. Now not everyone speaks English well so not a big deal. Then you get into the gameplay and it feels cheap and rushed. Example the laser drill you carry never moves. You hold it and mine toward the right drill remains forward. Found a geyser looking thing with water in it. You could easily see through the water texture and that of the Geyser

These are some things I noticed in 18 minutes. No not a lot of time but enough to see that if there are typos and no animations for simple things. I will not recommend this game even on sale for $10 just not worth it. If more effort got put into the game it might have been something.

If you are slightly interested in this check out SATISFACTORY. Excellent game already got my money out of it and it is in Early Access too. Sad thing is it is only on the Epic Store.

I had high hopes for this game, as I purchased it several years ago in it's early stages and it showed potential. In it's newly full release state, the game still lacks depth and finesse. While many of the game mechanics are sound, the execution is finicky and at times even broken. The 'infinite' worlds to be explored are moderately sized squares with resources clustered in the middle a short stroll away.

Great game, but needs some more work to really be amazing.

There are several modes, including "builder" which gets rid of the survival elements. This is great for those of us just looking to build a factory. It doesn't seem to matter what planet you start on as long as it has iron, copper, and coal to begin fabrication. Once there's enough material, there's a choice to craft prebuilt, powered furnaces and the like and plop them down, or craft individual pieces (including wiring, batteries, solar, belts, etc.) and connect them however you'd like. This is great and allows huge layout customization including power grids and battery banks which can help at night.

Pros:

    • It's really fun! Like a less complex 3D Factorio with flying!
    • Progression is solid, at least until automated steel, which is where I got stopped.
    • Graphics are pretty nice, with a couple of different planets to start on like rocky and icy.
    • The machines look fantastic and are easily distinguishable from each other.
    • The base looks awesome once it gets a bit bigger, and there's a satellite view that still allows interaction with the base.
    • Day and night cycles and the storms are cool and look decent.
    • There are TONS of things to build, from little lights and wires to what looks like a full spaceport that can be decorated inside.

Cons:

    • Snapping needs work. For example: placing an ore miner, prebuilt or otherwise, on a patch can put it on a different level than the rest of the base and there's no way to connect the conveyors or power. If that happens, the whole assembly has to be deconstructed piecemeal which clogs the inventory. If a prebuilt is constructed, it should be deconstructed the same way, or at least have a CTRL+Z.
    • There's no tech tree, so no simple way to tell what machine needs what to progress. Everything is just there in a window with a popup saying whether or not there's enough stuff to craft it. The numbers are sorta hard to read.
    • There's no machines that can craft other machines that I've found. Constantly handcrafting makes it feel slightly limited and sluggish sometimes.
    • Small glitches and hiccups with running around, and the flying is slower than running.
    • To open a machine, it must be selected with the mouse then opened with F, then click the desired item. It can get clicky.
    • The tutorial is a random popup that interrupts whatever you're doing. It can be turned off though.
    • Laser mining has to be "lined up" or the ore will just fly around to pick up manually. Best to stand on a patch and look straight down for this.
    • I was able to build a steel smelting complex before the game crashed with an unknown fatal error. I have a midlevel rig.

Overall it's worth checking out, I've already spent more time on this than Satisfactory because it's more fun and intuitive, and the machines are bigger and far cooler looking. Plus it's on Steam and not _____. The cons listed are more QoL type stuff and likely a result of inevitably comparing it to Factorio. The core of the game is solid, I like it and want to keep playing, so thumbs up from me.

I really like these types of games, but this one I cannot recommend. It just feels so cheap and poorly done.

When I first started a game, I walked up to a capsule and pressed E, F, G, Space and left clicked/right clicked, nothing happened. Then all of the sudden the loot window opens. When I look at the controls, it is not specific. I tried other capsules. F seemed to maybe work? but I am not for sure, it is almost like when I went up to the capsule, there was a delay in the game knowing that there was something there so I could not interact with it for the first 30 or so seconds.

These green blob things kept just appearing out of no where close to me. I have a feeling they are the only enemies this game spawns. When you hit them with your drill/weapon? they just kinda break in half or something? It's almost like there are no visuals except for two, for them. One showing them whole and the other showing them broken before they disappear.

I would be mining and a random tutorial window would open that has nothing to do with what I am working on at the time. I turned it off in the options menu because it was so blatantly irritating. Also, there was a whole tab just for that with yes/no...

I built a water machine, then an oxygen machine. I did not have to interact with it, I just walked close and it fill my air some how...

I had this on my wish list for years and decided to give it a go. I am so disappointed. I cannot believe the developer calls this a finished game with the disgustingly bad controls and interface. This will be the second game ever that I request a refund on.

Got to the point where I could build a ship. There was no way to refuel it nor add the water, O2 or anything else. Teh pipes had to be placed in BEFORE you ever move it to fill it up for the first time. However, there are oil tanks on the front that you can't fill until you get to a planet that has it, then you can't fill them because the pipes are not lined up, it impossible to line it up perfectly and seemingly, no remote means to fill it.

It needs a LOT of polishing and fleshing out before it can be called a playable game. A couple of annoying bugs but nothing game breaking.

Sad part is, it's a typical Unreal Engine game with a small square play area on each planet with all the resources available almost in the same place. It could have been an entire planet that would make it similar to Empyrion, so you have to travel a bit to get resources and the train would actually then be useful. At the moment, the train is little more than a gimmick that you'll build once and never use again.

Be warned, the dev is unresponsive. Bug reports, posts asking for information and anything else are ignored. Not a good sign for an EA game. Also, the players don't seem to want to respond or help either, I posted a couple of questions days ago that have never been answered by anyone and ended up battling to find the answers myself to no avail since there is no game Wiki with any information either.

I really can't recommend this game right now given the devs lack of response or the update frequency. I get the distinct impression that the game will be abandoned before it's even half finished considering how long it's been between updates and the lack of any real interest by the dev toward the players.

If things change, I will update my review and possibly I can then recommend it, but not now.

Pretty good design vision, sadly quite unfinished and now being abandoned to work on a new game.
Current state is definitively not worth its current price, so unless it's on 90% sale and you are fine with buying an unfinished product that is very unlikely to be completed, don't buy it.

seems to crash fairly often. sometimes glitches occur where you click on an item and no popup window identifies what the item is or its status, which happens often when attempting to jump to another planet. Otherwise....great game!

Dev abandonned the game for another one (Farlight commanders).
This is what Satisfactory looked like in Alpha 0.0001, but he didn't even try to compete with it, and just goes "Srew it, i'm gonna milk another game type instead".
Do not buy, as it will not have more updates.

Honestly After all this time hoping for more meat to the bones, but sadly the devs have moved on to something else so in its current state I can't recommend this maybe if it was around the 4USD mark
