Epic.

As a big fan of the FF franchise, but one who never experienced the original VII, this felt like everything I enjoy about their games.

My first experience with FF was playing 10 on the PS2 when I was young. KH came out a year later, and I was introduced to Cloud and Sephiroth as characters, as well as Tetsuya Nomura's ability to write mesmerizing stories. His plots had a huge influence on me, so if I sound like a fanatic, its because I am one. That being said, this story exceeded my expectations..

The gameplay is solid, in my opinion the best example of Action-RPG style fighting I've seen in years. Even on normal difficulty, it can be unforgiving to players who don't understand enemies' resistances and weaknesses.

My biggest gripe with the PC port of VII Remake is its horrible optimization. I spent hours in the beginning researching forum posts trying to figure out how to make the game run smoothly on my setup. Someone less patient might not want to have to go through what I did..

This game was pricy for what it was. I think it should have been about 20 dollars cheaper, considering it was the price of a game that typically would have granted at least 100 hours of playtime, but with DLC this game grants maybe 55-60 if you really squeeze it.

That being said, despite the $70 price tag and feeling a little taken advantage of because of the price, the game is just spectacular. The battle is fun and engaging, the changes to the characters are fresh and fun to spot, and the little extras and changes to the plot are so far awesome. I wish the game had a few more options for side quests or grinding to level up, but overall I enjoyed every second of this game while I was playing. I can not wait for the next part.

This is such a garbage remake. They expect us to pay for the rest of the story through installments. The first part is nothing, but shitty filler and when they finally run out of the filler they introduce the big reveals without any build up. The combat is complete and enemies are poorly structure. None of the fan service in this game doesn't make any sense unless you played the original so how is any newcomer suppose to get into the remake when the remake assumes you played the original. If you're a fan of FF7 or if you want to get into FF7 don't bother with this garbage remake and don't let the pretty graphics fool you. If you want a true remake then download the 7 Heavens Mod. 2/10

If you owned a PSX, and the original FF7 holds a special place in your heart, this review is for you. I'll keep the pros and cons brief.

In the wake of so many lackluster ports and remakes by Square Enix, you're probably on the fence about buying the game.

When this remake was first announced, I was beyond stoked. I had assumed it would be a strict 1:1 retelling. When we soon thereafter learned that it would not be, my expectations for the game dropped.

It finally came to PC, and I decided to purchase and give it a try. After playing, I can see that the developers respect and love the original game. Or if that's not true, they clearly fooled me. It is a labor of love through and through. The vibe, energy, and experience of the key scenes are everything you would hope a 3D retelling of a beloved game would be. They nailed it in that respect.

What surprised me is that while a strictly faithful remaster with turn-based combat would have been awesome, it's actually well done as an action RPG. It's a new experience and a familiar one at the same time. And the more I play this one, the more I think that maybe that turn-based combat would have felt strange as a remaster. Maybe I would have rather just played the original if simply the graphics and QOL were updated. And maybe I would nitpick any tiny difference rather than enjoy the new version as its unique experience.

So here are my pros and cons. For reference, favorite FFs are IV, VI, VII, IX, X, and Tactics, and IMO the only other great SE remake is Trials of Mana (awesome game--check it out).

PROS:
+Top-notch soundtrack redone by the master himself
+Outstanding environments, many of which are faithful to the 3D pre-rendered backgrounds on the original PSX. Aerith's house will blow you away
+Combat is engaging, fun, and challenging. Combat feels similar to Witcher 3 except with party members.
+You are disincentivized from spamming roll dodge in battles--rolling automatically puts you in the weaker stance/mode of attack. This makes "cheesing" the combat system less likely.
+Side quests are decently interesting and infrequent enough that they do not annoy or detract from the story
+Excellent player models faithful to the original
+The main arc of the story (for this specific entry) remains unchanged, though there are differences that often add color and depth to Midgar and to the characters rather than deviate substantially from the original
+Voice acting and dialogue are very good (English)

CONS
-The mechanics around blocking are suboptimal
-Overall, the lack of customizable strategy/AI for your non-controlled party members leaves them ineffective without you issuing commands to them. That being said, strong AI for them would possibly make the game too easy.
-I am concerned about the drastically different direction the game may head into in the NEXT two installments. To be clear, I'm reviewing this specific entry in the series. However, I already don't like their recasting Wutai as a large nation that could somehow threaten Shinra/Midgar. In the original, Wutai could do no such thing. This sort of retconning is problematic. So, it's very possible I will not like the next entries because of that. For example, if this supposed Wutai war takes center stage over the JENOVA and Lifestream storyline, we will have a serious problem, and it's really no longer FF7.
-A minor point, but the game gives you too many mandatory "alternate" movement areas in the environments (e.g. sidling along a wall, crouching under something, etc.). These are annoying for a couple reasons. They are too frequent/slow. Second, there is a lot of space and your character could easily fit through them without having to sidestep or duck. It looks stupid for Cloud to be sidling along a fence he could just walk normally next to.
-You may dislike some minor story changes (IN THIS ENTRY) if you're a purist, but if so, it's likely made up for by the faithfulness and depth of the main story points.

-The price point pushing close to $100 is too high for a port from a console, or really any game in my opinion. Buy it on sale, and it's a fair price.

Again, hopefully this is helpful to you. Be careful out there. Midgar's a crazy place.

Here's to hoping one day they'll make a Chrono Trigger remake as good as this one.

The original Final Fantasy VII was my first into the series back in 1997. For me it is in my top 10 games of all time. I replay the original game every 5-8 years, start to finish, even beating all the weapons at end game.

The remake overall is great. The downsides are the mediocre side-quests, the price tag (purchased on sale), and the fact that the game will be a trilogy. Another downside others may not like (didn't bother me) is that the story feels more like a sequel or set in a parallel universe.

This game did not let me down though. The combat is fantastic. Each character plays very unique. Every materia and new weapon you find is awesome. The OG characters are all voiced exactly how you read them in your head back in the day. The story, though slightly changed, is outstanding. The new game plus feature is well done. I'm currently 70 hours in and only half way through my hard playthrough. Haven't even touched the extra Intergrade chapters.

Overall, if you enjoyed the OG or any JRPG, it's worth it on sale. If you are looking for a 1:1 copy with better graphics, just get the OG game and download some mods.

I was outrageously excited for this game to come to steam. The original was my first Playstation game that I can remember, and I recall loving it so much that on multiple occasions played through the first disk and had to start over because didn't have a memory card to save to swap disks.

I played 14 hours of this game and just suddenly stopped. I haven't looked back at it. I got Final Fantasy Crisis Core vibes from it which was a game I really really loved on the PSP a long time ago. So why didn't I like this game? I genuinely have no idea. Everything was set up for me to like it, in the end, I found the combat just super boring, the dialog kinda cringe and in general I'm really not liking how predatory SE is getting so I'm just dropping them as a publisher completely tbh. Anyway, I wanted to love this game but I didn't. Make up your own mind.

I'm not sure what led to the design decision of not making FF7r open world. The original magic of FF7 was exploring the landscape. I have warm memories of breeding chocobos in hopes that I could get to the next area of the map.

This game feels desperately linear and all I want to do is leave Midgar and go explore.

If you are looking for the FF7 experience from the days of old, you won't find it here.

6 hours in and very happy with the remake. It strikes a good balance between revisiting childhood memories and modernizing the story with updated graphics and dialogue. The voice acting is 4/5, the music is 5/5, and the overall gameplay is 4/5. The active combat system is cool and easy to get used to, but I do miss the turn-based combat at times.

4 hours in and so far I love it!!! The graphics are really good and the gameplay is fun. The remake is more of an action rpg, rather than turn based like the original. But, It's really fun!

When Barrett sang the FFVII victory song after a fight, I laughed mr freaking ass off!!!

Simply put, this game is awesome. The various skill systems work well and quick, which gives a good sense of progression. The music and scenery draw you in which turns an hour into a couple quite quickly. Plays very well on the deck too! I’d recommend as a first entry to newcomers of the FF series.

The remake is awesome. Loved how they used "The Promise Land" in a different version after coming across Sephiroth. It's ok on the steam deck but, not really sure what happened on how it stopped functioning properly. But of course I send it off to the Steam Deck repair center and they fixed (Thanks guys and gals). Completed this game twice on steam and PS5. The original and remake are fantastic to replay again.

I have to say I tried making it through the game, I was so excited for it, but the design is just so frustrating. It's an overly bloated mess that long overstays its welcome, it's very often not fun and doesn't respect the player's time.
The story itself I think has a bit of a hard time translating to a modern era, and I was very surprised how it could make me hate a character like Aerith who was so beloved before.

Actually a really great game, maybe not $70 worth due to it being exclusive to consoled and Epic for so long, I def got it on sale when it dropped. However everything else in it aside from some issues that most games like this have where it takes control or limits it for story stuff is amazing, it really feels like a lived in world. The combat's great, I liked the new twists it put on its story and world while still staying what it was before. Ga gleep gloop! Game's good

Since I found it impossible to get a PS5, I have been patiently waiting for this to release on Steam. I was honestly very worried that it wouldn't live up to the hype, but I'll be damned. It's just wonderful all around. The gameplay, combat, voice acting, literally everything was well thought out and incredibly well done. You'd be a moron not to pick this one up.

Would recommend for people who like JRPGs, action combat and music produced by gods.

Side Side Note: No Kebab Cloud yet.
Side Note Side Note: I changed my mind. Aerith is best girl.

Glad they put gender ideology in the game! Good Job! This game is mostly filler and fluff with less than 10 hours of good story driven game play. Do you self a favor and save time and money by watching the movie (youtube).

Presented in an unnecessarily long essay: the remake we didn't want nor needed

FFVIIR is a beast of its own and strives to be a separate entity while following in the original's footsteps.

As a remake, the game is technically a sellout, but it's recreation of the settings and characters is anything but. As a game on its own, it is very enjoyable for the most part. The core battle system is fluid and addictive, with smooth and detailed animation I found myself admiring when in slow-mo mode. I think it's a brilliant combination of the original's more traditional RPG gameplay with the more action oriented modern FF games and JRPGs in general.

There is plenty of room for strategic combat and customization while being far more accessible than the original. The art direction and character designs are all fantastic, although Square Enix's handling of the PC port is horrendous and inexcusable for a big budget release priced at $70. With forced AA and overall blurry image as well as no real graphics settings. Resorting to mods is the only way to get the most optimal experience (also I'm not going to get into the Epic store exclusivity bullshit because its been already well scrutinized). This really does injustice to the detailed art and characters.

Speaking of the story, it's all over the place, feels like stretching the original's opening with meaningless filler (looking at you chapter 4) and adding details which I see as an effort to please fans with imagery of the iconic characters while feeling out of context. However, when the game sticks to the original scenarios, it recreates them very well and shows glimmers of what a true one-to-one recreation would've been like. The story really picks up in the final stretch and is very unfortunate that this is where it ends, even with an intermediary conclusion. Also, the script is filled with classic Nomura cryptic nonsense, although its not as bad as Kingdom Hearts imo.

The music. OH LORD THE MUSIC. An absolute gift, it covers a wide range of genre and moods, classic tracks being fantastically recreated and the new pieces are pretty good on their own. I cannot recommend enough to listen to the OST regardless if you play the game or not. The tracks are also woven into the gameplay very well and really helps with immersion both in quiet moments and the busting action sequences.

I can say with little doubt that FFVIIR is a solid entry point for newcomers, even if it shares only few elements with the original, due to it's smaller scope. It definitely does not connect with the bigger picture of the compilation (not yet, at least), but I believe it can help with grasping some concepts new players might find confusing in the original, both from story and gameplay perspectives.

The writing is all over the place and the sidequests are honestly wastes of time. Still, the core moment to moment combat helps going through even the most boring fillers in my opinion. Judging the game on its own is tricky, seeing as it's incomplete story-wise, but for what it's worth, I simply had too much fun experiencing Midgar again, even though it sometimes feels a little too different for its own good.

TLDR, it's either for you or it isn't. Hot take, I know, but I've done my best explaining what I think of it. Even if it's not for you, I stand by that this is an experience worth diving into once, whether you played the original or not.

Both extremely faithful to the original and breaking through the constraints of the classic story. New content within the walls of Midgar, and playing through this game in 52 hours just makes me want more. Cannot wait for the second installment of this remake. I only hope it comes to Steam. 9.5/10

One of the best RPGs i've ever played. Story is very detailed and makes it where you are invested in the characters. Gamplay/combat is awesome. The game runs very smooth and is very optimized, no crashes. When I thought the game was about to end, It had many hours more left in it. Truly amazing game. Weird out of place scenario where cloud dresses/ becoming a.. well I won't spoil it, but really just seemed out of place and added no value to Clouds character arch . Then another scene were women where gonna be pretty much.. i guess the best way to put it, taken advantage of by a bunch of men. Not sure why these were placed in the game, kinda cringe and out of place. Other than that the game is really awesome.

The motorcycle part was the worst part of FF7 original. Hands down. I guess they decided they needed to make it worse and longer and way more a part of the game for the remake. They're literally just trolling with it. It completely ruins the game.

Like so many I grew up with FF7 being one of the hallmark experiences of my gaming childhood. When I heard they were remaking FF7 I was excited but disappointed it was going to be a PS exclusive. I only recently became aware they ported the game to PC and was excited to learn this, picked it up quickly.

Like a fool, I didn't seize the opportunity immediately to try the game out for defects, like a fool, I let the refund window elapse before I'd even known what I'd gotten myself into...

Okay, in all fairness, the game isn't that bad. It isn't perfect, but it's a decent recreation of the first disk of FF7. The combat system is different, it's much more akin to crisis core or FFXV, which isn't bad, but it does make for a dramatically different experience. Even the "classic mode" which has the game input basic commands for you while you are focusing on planning your spells and ability uses was rather limited. The friendly AI was pretty good considering at not getting plastered by bosses with raid style mechanics ("dont stand in the fire" etc) so for the most part you do just have to only worry about the actions of a single character. It would've been beneficial however to have more automated AI behaviour as has been seen in some other games like FF12 and 13.

The story was created with great visual fidelity to the original, there are scenes they had to take liberties on, others told and shown in greater context, and the occasional event that doesn't quite exactly follow the storyline of the original, leaving you always guessing what's happening next. It seems as though this is FF7 as seen in some other timeline, yet much like in the series Loki featuring multiple timelines, there seems to be some force trying to constrict events to a certain outcome. Interesting enough twist to keep people who've played the original still feeling like there's more to see than just some new polish.

Okay, so why is this a flat out negative review? Well, if you haven't realized yet, like SO, SO many of Squeenix's ports, the attention to care and quality control of this port is absolute gutter trash. There are several major bugs that are essentially unavoidable no matter how much work you spend trying to fix them, namely the game audio in this version somehow constantly dies when the audio engine is even remotely taxed, causing the whole game to sound like you just grabbed your speakers and jumped into a pool with them. It's probably the worst audio issue I've ever encountered in any game ever. The only way to combat this is to turn the volume in game settings down to 1 in every category and then crank your speakers to the max and even then you can barely heard the game. The second you get an outside notification not from the game say goodbye to your ear drums. This is an absolutely debilitating issue for this game and you might as well accept that the game is going to sound like whispers or dog shit if you're going to choose to play with any audio at all.

The second issue pertains to cutscenes. For some reason, the game is not capable of displaying or processing certain cutscenes, many of which are pretty critical to understanding and following the story. When this issue occurs the screen freezes frame and dialogue audio continues while all other sound elements are removed from context often leaving you staring in silence at a still frame for what feels like an eternity. Apparently there's a community "fix" for this that requires you to individually download each and every video file one by one and replace them all, every cutscene file in the game which they hosted as separate individual files just to make it as nightmarishly tedious as possible. But jesus christ why is it up to the community to make the game just playable as it was meant to be played?

I should've learned my lesson by now and you should learn it from me too, don't trust Squeenix PC releases to not be bug ridden pieces of shit that should never have been released and that will never be patched.

It's great but I miss the classic turn based style from the original. Does seem kinda short for a Final Fantasy game. I do like the linear progression in this game. Gave me FFXIII vibes. My favorite FF.

Ok, I would not recommend any game built to be a cash grab for one, they will milk the title FF7 for every penny they can. So the actual review, for one the artists that made the game and the level designers are amazing, they did an out standing job designing the world and building the assets for it. The game play point is designed to milk what was 3 hours of the original games story and make it an 8 hour adventure. Longer obviously if your gonna try to 100% everything. There are many times where your stuck walking at a snail pace for prolong time just to waste time most of which doesn't even add to world building. They do have some good points for world building which comes from just exploring. I hope in the next installment they improve alot of the combat and clean it up some, it has some advantages just needs more cleaning up, you can literally counter spam some fights to make them a joke. Sadly most of the game can be just summed up as filler episodes in a anime or tv show just to take up time and that's the part I just can't get by. I dont want to see Square making this a 10 part story just to milk $60-$120 a game with side dlc for more profits just for greed. They can make a great world from this lets see how it turns out

The gameplay and graphics on this are quite nice, it is very strait forward and since i am more interested in the story than difficulty i have been playing on easy mode. I think the combat system is quite different than the original game, very similar to crisis core for the psp. I have been using an xbox controller and I highly recommend a controller for this game, usually i am a keyboard and mouse type player but this is one of the few exceptions for me.

Mögbär

If you want the same game as back then in modern graphics, this will not satisfy you. As most people are aware of by now, not only does this cover but the beginning of FFVII up until you leave Midgar, it also adds a ton of content to it and takes drastic liberties with the overall story and where it is headed. While I personally like what they are going for, I'm not fond of how those changes are presented, to say it spoilerfree.

Speaking of presentation, it's mostly great. Combat especially looks fantastic and the music and sound are phenomenal. The overall impression is weakened by areas with really weak textures, albeit notably better than on PS4, and that classic awkwardness of NPCs in JRPGs who look fake like dolls and act or talk cringeworthily. Other than that, it's a feast for eyes and ears.

A lot of complaints refer to the new content and it's true that a lot of it feels like padding or artificial stretching of what originally were only a handful of hours into a full game. You'll run down a lot of long hallways and tunnels, several times in some cases even, the side quests are mostly generic or plain boring and do a lot of redundant busywork. However there is new content that's legitimately great. too, and even the boring stuff is saved by the combat system being so fun it makes even going to beat up a bunch of rats for gil worth the time.

The combat is a very well done mixture of real time action and classic ATB rounds. Basically, you attack, dodge and block in realtime, which, depending on your equipment setup will speed up your ATB charging. Those charges are then used for special commands like spells or using items, among other things. What's nice about this system is that it encourages switching regularly between party members. While the AI lets them act automatically and you can give commands and influence their behavior with certain materia, charging those ATB bars quickly happens while you control them and it's also great that each of the four playable characters handles a little differently from the others. To me, the combat is the outstanding highlight of this game because it's so much fun and offers a lot of depth with many different ways materia and equipment affect how you play and adapting to each enemy's strengths and weaknesses feels rewarding.

As good as it feels, I would add that a controller seems recommended. Mouse and keyboard technically work, of course, but some of the minigames aren't fit well to it and I couldn't find a good layout that lets me control combat as fluently and efficiently as the controller does. This might work better if you have a mouse with some extra buttons, though.

If you already own this game on another platform and wonder whether purchasing it again for the included DLC is worth it, my answer is no. I didn't think the Yuffie add-on was all that good. You only have a team of two this time and are allowed to only control one of them, Yuffie, making the combat less complex. They tried to make up for it by adding a synchronity or synergy or whatever function but there's never any reason not to have the two characters fight "in sync", so it seems pointless. Also, the add-on is very short, so you hardly even get to use much of the equipment and skills. The story of the DLC isn't really good, either and takes itself way too seriously considering how silly Yuffie is. It has some really nice boss fights, though and it's also nice they gave Yuffie her own combat style just like the four mains'.

Other than that, I wholeheartedly recommend this game. I'm not blind to its sometimes severe flaws, I just think it makes up for them in other aspects. This game is a blast and it also tickles the nostalgia quite a bit for those who played the original back then. (My personal recommendation is to play that first, because a lot of moments will just not have the same effect on you if you don't know the original game, even if it is not needed to understand this remake.)

At the time of writing, I have not completed the story, and I have never played the original FF7 or consumed any FF7 media aside from this.

As a dopamine-addicted manchild with ADHD, I'm not a fan of how slow Cloud moves when not in combat. Things like tight halls and tightrope walks are not hard to do, usually only requiring you to hold up on the joystick. All it does is make walking slower without adding any challenge. I also dislike how you often must wait until all other characters in your party have progressed before you're allowed to move along. Waiting for party members to climb ladders or enter tight corridors makes the goblin in my brain go nuts.
Also, I hated what they did to Cloud in the Wall Market. You didn't have to humiliate my boy like that. :(

Despite the negative things I've posted above, I seem to find myself continuing to come back to this game. The story is gripping enough to make me want to know what happens next, and the combat is riveting and challenging. In my opinion, the good outweighs the bad, and I recommend that other people try this game.

Love the game. The battles are epic.
It really is a remake of the original and very well done.

I wouldn't worry to much about what others some people are saying that it is to different from the original.
I don't think that is the case at all.It really is great.

I enjoy normal mode and classic mode. When I use classic I continue to take manual control the whole time but in between it can block and attack which I like. Like I said the battles are epic with so much going on.
Winning each battle feels like an accomplishment. even though I did not understand stagger and other things in the beginning but as the game went on I learned it though use.

I recommend this game to anyone.
But for original Final Fantasy 7 fans looking for a great remake of a great game. This wont disappoint.

But don't get to stuck on, this or that being different or simple characters lives are more flushed out in the story. Its OK, just go with it. The main story line is True to the original. In wonderful ways that sparked my nostalgia and brought me to tears more than once.

Get it, Play it, don't hesitate.

What feels like a natural evolution of turn-based strategy incorporates some of the best aspects of Kingdom Hearts-style combat. Just wish it paired with a good story - Nomura is so so hesitant to tell a good one, even though it already exists. I'll replay on hard just for the gameplay, maybe even get parts 2 and 3 when they come to Steam - as long as Jules isn't in them.

This is a tiny game that is artificially stretched out by never-ending cinematic sequences, pointless dialogue, and cramped passages. Everything in this game is designed to waste your time to disguise the total lack of content and even the characters in the game are aware of that!!!

The game has extremely tight control over what it allows the player to do, you walk at the speed Square wants, you walk only in the direction they let you and sometimes you even look only where they allow you, it's suffocating.

The main characters look phenomenal, even too much so because they are completely different from the rest. The difference is so grotesque that when you interact with the other characters it seems that we are facing graphical malfunction.

The script and character development are practically non-existent, as this is a remake Square-Enix relies on people's memories to fill in the gaps, but those who are experiencing this for the first time will get to the end without understanding what the is going on, even for those who know the story the ending is a mess.

The Final Fantasy saga never excelled at world building, it was more about the characters and plot, but here there is almost no development of the characters, plot, or world building.

The evil Sephiroth appears completely randomly and for no reason destroying all the build that his character had in the original game.

Tifa, Aerith and Jessie don't talk or act like real people, but like these perfect waifus for teenagers with raging hormones.

Barret is the worst of them all there should be a limit to how loud a character can be without falling into ridicule. A man who is supposed to be the leader of a secret organization but can't resist to the slightest provocation and acts like a 12-year-old boy. In Midgar everyone and their mother should know that he is member of Avalache by now.

Red XIII can't be controlled and his usefulness is doubtful. It is only present as meaningless fan-service and to dump exposition about the Destiny.

Speaking of Destiny, that's another contrived plot point thrown in for no good reason. It doesn't make any sense for the heroes to try to change their own destiny because they effectively saved the world according to what is "written."

Another problem with the script is that there is a deus ex machina for everything, the amount of plot armor everyone has (even side characters) in this story is so ridiculous and the writers themselves had this notion and tried to make things a little more believable, but unfortunately it was the exception rather than the rule.

Many of these believability and characterization problems stem solely from the hyper-realistic design of the game. It worked in the original because the game had a cartoonish/anime feel and the most ridiculous situations were relieved by comic moments provided by the dialogue, acting and music, but in this game, it mostly doesn't happen and when it does its just cringe.

The combat is a mix of all RPGs mechanics in existence, it is action, real time with pause, has action points and a mana pool for spells, I liked it, but it needs some polishing.

The ATB system charges very slowly if you're not constantly attacking and is extremely dependent on bonuses provided by materia and weapons which makes combat tricky especially early in the game when these bonuses are not available.

Imagine spending your only ATB charge to resurrect a character and then having him die because you have no ATB charges available to heal him to full health or having to attack a very powerful enemy and the risk that this entails just to accumulate ATB and have the possibility to do a minimally relevant action.

The aerial combat is garbage and should have been removed completely from the game.
The combat in general has too many special effects, it is often hard to tell what is happening to your characters when the VFX fills the entire screen. And it's not just the effects, large enemies or combat in tight spaces mean that the camera can't be positioned correctly, and you can't see much of what's going on.

Level design is terrible except for the Shinra building because most of it is comprised of construction sites and scrap copied and pasted to oblivion. Most of them are too narrow to fight in them and to similar to get a proper sense of direction.

The evasion mechanic only works for some characters, but for Aerith it is meaningless because the movement that she makes doesn't have enough range to effectively evade most of the time alongside the fact that she attacks slowly makes her practically useless.

The lock system doesn’t work very well because the button that controls the camera angle is the same so when we reposition the view angle the lock switches to another target if it is in range.

The character switching mid battle is a bit confusing because the character we are switching to varies depending on the on that is being controlled, it would be nice if SE allowed to bind the directional button to specific characters.

They did a good job limiting resources like items, money and materia but I think they went too far by only allowing one magnify materia in the entire game.

I did not like that some weapon abilities were only available in hard mode and some materia have such high AP requirements that only triple the AP provided after the end of the game and extensive grinding allows to reach its maximum. Yet another artificial restriction made by SE to give the idea that the game has more content than it provides.

The boss battles vary a lot between the spectacular, the unbearable and the never-ending boredom. But a common problem in these battles are the constant interrupts by cinematic sequences that destroy all momentum and make the resources we used going to waste. Imagine using a multi-hit limit break and the first hit activates the second boss phase which triggers the animation, and we are left without knowing if all the attack landed, the same applies to ATB charges and even the summons final attacks.

Speaking of summons they are just kind of there, we can use them in a limited number of battles and there’s nothing else to it, another utter disappointment.

The mini-games are fun and challenging but needed more modes especially the whack-a-box.

The side quests are too generic and without any kind of consequence or alternative resolution, they are functional and only that.

Another thing I didn't like was the sanitization of many aspects of the story, I know it is practically impossible for someone to publish a game nowadays where the heroes are a terrorist organization that does bombings, but even the blood and the massacre in the Shinra tower they removed. If you look closely there is not a single drop of blood in this game.

This is a bare-bones game that relies on branding and nostalgia to be barely functional. On top of that it only delivers about 20% of the original but it is sold to you at full price to provide Square-Enix a steady source of income.

A wonderful expansion of the original game. The characters are fully fleshed out (particularly those glossed over in the original), the music is amazing, and the graphics capture in full what was originally a pale picture in comparison.
I worried that this only covered up until the escape from Midgar, but the story team did something great, taking the seed that was and building a more encompassing city to explore and adventure within.

The character models look amazing but the game is simply boring by today's action RPG standards. The itemization is really lacking, the quests are linear as hell but not exciting. Very overrated game IMO.

A must have for anyone who is a Final Fantasy fan. The original blew me away when it was released. This remake takes the characters, stories, and lore to places where hardcore fans only imagined back in those days. Fantastic gameplay, graphics, sound, and systems. The only con I have here is the time between this release and the next installments. Please put them out ASAP.

I'm biased, so I would totally recommend this title. I've beat the classic about 4 or 5 times and now this remake twice. Ready to start Intregrade finally and eager for the next installment(s). Lots of stuff within the game that us who have played the classic will see new things and things they kept from the classic and just made it absolutely beautiful. One playthrough can easily be around 35hours. I will work through it slowly on Hard for the additional achievements and challenges. Not even in the slightest disappointed with this. Most remakes are a reskin for modern day graphics, but this? This redefines what a remake is and what most remakes should be. As I've mentioned above about new content with the old content still in place and modernized in a 3rd person "Hack and Slash." Very recommended, very great title.

Bought this game 3 times....once on ps4 through psn back when it first came out, then another one through play asia (Japanese physical release) and now the steam version. I finally beat both the main story and DLC through the steam version. This was a really good game with a big nostalgia factor if you played the original. I decided to wait this long to finally play and beat this game because I wanted to play it in it's purest form (in Japanese only, as I was learning Japanese when it first came out and now I could go through it in only Japanese), but it turned out I also beat what is in my opinion the best version of the game. There are definitely a few bugs and glitches with this version of the game that are not present in the console version, but since I had everything maxed out it definitely looked better than the ps4 version.

I definitely installed a few mods from nexus mods to help smooth out the experience for me.

Stutter-Free Seamless Gameplay (Streams asset loading for a mostly stutter free experience)
FFVIIHook - INI and dev console unlocker (needed for the above mod)
Aggressive Companions (Makes it so your party will attack more frequently)
Tifa Thicc Thighs 'n Arms (ok, maybe this one was just for fun :D)

I also noticed some audio stutter/breaking up in certain parts of the game which was very annoying....to fix that I added a line to engine.ini (this file should have been added/created if you set up the first mod on the list) the following line

au.SetAudioChannelCount=25

then restarted the game. The same area would no longer have audio issues....but I did have to remove and re-add this line a few times as I noticed this line in certain points of the game removes the sound of steps from the character (primarily in the wall market, but there are other parts where it gets removed as well, at least that I noticed)..So I kept removing and readding this line whereever needed....only had to mess with this file 3 or 4 times in the entire playthrough so it didn't get too annoying to do.

One thing that I will point out is although the game never crashed for me, there were 2 points where it either froze or was running at power point speed (

I know some people are going to bitch and moan about this game, but I gotta say I really like it.
I played this all the way on PS4 with no DLCs, so I have more than 6 hours played on this game.
The graphics are good, but there's a massive texture mod you can use to make it look even BETTER! The gameplay is fun, you go more in depth of the Avalanche members, and Cloud isn't a whiny emo asshole like he is in Kingdom Hearts or anything like that.

If you have never played FF7 back on the PS1 or PC way back in the day, this is maybe the first quarter of the game. This is the biggest downside - the story is not yet complete. The gameplay is good, the story is classic Final Fantasy (in my opinion the 3rd best Final Fantasy story/character development), the graphics/animations are dope, and then the MUSIC.
Holy balls this music brings tears to my eyes. Nobuo Uematsu is an absolute legend and this is an orchestral version of his work. Keiji Kawamori did the music justice and I do not know how else to explain that the music is so amazing. You just have to listen to it for yourself to understand how the music does so well with the game. It makes this game go from pretty dang good to a must-play.

All in all, I highly HIGHLY recommend this game. If you have not played the original FF7, I highly recommend it, even if you Zoomers think, "these graphics suck," because it was made for the PS1. Even if you haven't this is a blast of a game where all the light-hearted parts of FF7 happen. Many colorful and well-rounded characters and starting the journey towards an epic adventure with amazing characters.

Great remake of an absolutely amazing classic. Definitely has some difference to it, but in a good way. After all, it IS a remake; not a remaster. The graphics and cut scenes are stupendous. The voice acting is spectacular*chefs kiss*. Love playing this and reminiscing on my past - as well as playing a whole new game. If your a FF fan, I definitely recommend. Only thing I'm hoping for is that the other parts are DLC and not $70/part/game. As much as I love FFVII, and understand it is a remake with multiple parts, I wouldn't go for money hungry sales with multiple expensive purchases for each part. Excited for the release of part 2(if DLC), though! Can't wait to see where it goes!

Final Fantasy VII was once regarded as one of the greatest games ever made. The remake is that, in all of its originally intended story glory. They did FFVII right. Everything is absolutely beautiful, one of the cleanest games I've ever seen. The battle system is an awesome addition to the game and how I originally thought I'd love to play so many years ago. It takes time to learn but isn't hard, and when you get good its spectacular. As amazing as I always pictured. I take alot of time in game to just appreciate the environments. Materia is as good as ever, still my favorite magic system. I really have no complaints for FFVII Remake at all.

A big one is constricting, linear environments, but that's what Midgar is supposed to be, it remains true in design as it is in story.

Gandalf The Caucasian
Gandalf The Ca…

I would recommend this but.... if you are a loyal fan of the old game there is lot about this remake+ that you are going to dislike.

The ideas were good but the execution sucked.
I like the thought of other SOLDIER besides cloud and sephiroth existing, and actually taking part in the story a lot but what we got is some lame ass over the top rival that killed off his own allies for fun and did some trope where he attacks his own side out of respect for the enemy that just beat him.... it was lame and poorly done.

I also like the idea of giving Wedge and Biggs and Jesse a bit of a back story but it went on waaaayyyy too long and the characters pretty much all lived which really ruins the impact of it all.

At the end of the day, I would say play it but dont spend too much or go into it with a really pure remake with a modern update, they take massive liberties with the story and I only pointed out the two biggest oofs, of many many oofs.

Its not the same as old FF7, but still a great remake. Graphics are great. Combat is different, but engaging, took a minute to get used to it.

I would recommend this game, IF it is on sale. 70 bucks is a bit much, even if it does include an expansion plus the main game. Also it is only the first disc of the original game, with loads of added stuff. Some is cool, some is a bit tedious.

Id give it a 4/5 stars. Defo worth a play if you can get it cheap.

As a Final Fantasy fan i just cant recommend this game.

SPOILERS:

The new story has way to many flaws in it and in all honestly we did not need to spend 40 hours in Midgar, the music and the visuals were fantastic and when we got to some of those scenes we all love from the original the feeling was great. But all the new content feels extremely forced and just a filler to make more time in Midgar. Anything that includes the "Ghost" and Destiny were extremely off putting for me and just doesn't fit this environment that was created decades ago. I wanted to experience Shrina being the big baddies again until the death of the president but they kept throwing Sephiroth down your throat at any opportunity they can get. Aerith and Sephiroth both having these see the future vibes and wanting to change it just doesn't do it for me. Aerith Character build-up in the first half of the game was amazing then once you rescue her from Hojo she turns into this mind reading sage that has all the answers but refuses to tell you. Fighting Sephiroth at the end of this Remake makes me wonder what they will do at the end of their third game since that iconic fight was the end of the original.

This brings back not only the nostalgia of the original Final Fantasy 7 game from the Playstation 1 era but also brings the flavors of new gen gaming, not to mention adding a twist to the original story.. I don't see why there's a need to complain about it not being turn based, this is actually great. Could be better if they added the option to switch between two battle systems (turn-based and action rpg) but I couldn't ask for more with this.

The performance on PC is also optimal, considering that Square Enix has a bad track record with ports on PC from console versions, I like this one, it doesn't eat up a lot of my hardware. Also looks gorgeous even on lower resolution. Great game!

What Final Fantasy VII Remake lacks in pacing it absolutely makes up for in character and style
★★★★✩ (4/5)
Quick note: I've never played the original Final Fantasy VII

Among the many remakes that have graced the video game industry in recent years, Final Fantasy VII Remake stands as the most ambitious, a dramatic undertaking to reimagine the original 1997 title as an entire trilogy. Remake, therefore, is less a complete story and more of a fully-fledged kickstart to what will likely be quite a spectacular adventure, if the high points of this game are any indication. Over the course of the 33 hours it took to complete the main game and the post-game episode INTERmission, Remake served up a decent story made all the better by some beautiful cutscene direction and wonderfully charming characters. It’s outside of the main narrative that things slip a bit; the combat is frequently dazzling, but the game’s lack of interesting side quests and some dull level design often had me wishing I could skip to the next major story beat.

It speaks to the strengths of Remake’s main narrative though that I always found it worthwhile to push through these moments. Even as it overstayed its welcome the cast remained so wonderfully likable, its combat so dynamic and engaging, that it was easy to look forward to whatever was coming next. Remake has made me enamored with these characters, and I’m already eager to see where they go now.

A note on the DLC: The story of the INTERmission DLC wasn’t particularly remarkable to me, but it did have some of the best combat in the entire package. Protagonist Yuffie is easily the most exciting character in the game to play as, since she can dynamically switch between ranged and close-quarters attacks. She’s also able to apply various elemental effects on the fly. She basically feels like an entire party wrapped up into one character, and it’s completely awesome.

Before you buy this understand this.
- Its is a REMAKE not a REMASTER-
That means this is not your beloved Final Fantasy 7 from 1997 with better graphics and new combat system.
This is Square Enix taking Final Fantasy 7 and REMAKING the Game into something new.

That out of the way.
I liked the game.
I only have two issues with the game
1. Take cutscene combat ratio
Listen this is a Square Enix Game of course their is hours of cutscences
but often times i thought - dude let me fight more, send in more enemy's

2. Lack of Emotions from Cloud
Don't get me wrong i know that's clouds personality but: "you owe me a pizza"
Really?
Just overall Anger and Sadness is displayed very bad by everyone, they did better in intermission.

Other then that the game was great a bit expensive but if you liked FF15 you will like this one.

for those with prior experience on the past game this will be an absolute treat, right up nostalgic alley. however if you are looking for a FF7 pc optimized experience you will disappointed, there is almost no graphical options and if you go into high graphics mode. there is stuttering when you move the camera and no way to turn motion blur off or reduce shadows either so yeah, great story but they were so focused on getting epic games money they forgot to add in graphics options or other pc options that we have come to expect in our games.

Is this worth $70? - No

Do I love the crap out of it? - Yes

I beat FF7 3 times between the ages of 12 and 14. It isn't even my favorite FF, but it defined summers with my friends, taking turns at sleepovers, grinding out levels, and dialing up to GameFAQs to learn about the hidden weapons and fight them.

This is only the first bit of the game, but they have lovingly recreated with a more interactive battle system and much less reading. So far, it's been a trip down nostalgia lane watching how they've updated everything I remembered from my childhood.

R.Heart
R.Heart

You know, it pains me to write this review. I wanted to love this game. So many people did. And what's really sad is, I was willing to give its faults a pass, I was so close to a glowing review, I told other reviewers they were nit-picking... right up until the very end. Because the source of my frustration, everything about why this shouldn't have been remade at all, comes back to one of the best parts of the original game. The crashing of the sector 7 plate was second only to the death of Aerith in the original, and nothing else in the original game even comes close. So I was actually quite happy to have this game focus more on Midgar, to spend more time getting to know Wedge, Biggs, and Jessie. To have those touching moments, when they draw final breath. To have their tragedies used to help Cloud break out of his cold shell, that was a really nicely played sequence. Except, come to find out, they *didn't* die.

I'm only on my second play-through when it occurred to me, what's going on. This game can be used as a great example of what new technology does to old games, and what the limitations are. The perception of the player is broken the moment you go from a more top-down view, to a third-person view. In being able to see things more personally, in having more expressiveness from the characters, in having a clearer picture of what things look like. Think about it, Final Fantasy 7 was originally made with poor 3d animations, slapped on 2d backgrounds. Gorgeous, hand-drawn backgrounds, but the juxtaposition was still jarring. It was a game that was only *just* beginning to bridge the gap into a new age of gaming. Text only, no voice acting, combat that was turn-based. You had to use your imagination quite a bit, to fill in the gaps. And this affects the way people remember things, because in their mind they see something amazing, when in reality it's... a sparse offering at best. And so I put this to you: Final Fantasy 7 Remake is not great, because the *original* was not great. Everybody points to FF7 and goes, "man, it sucks when Aerith died. She was everybody's sweetheart." Nobody feels that way, when they interact with the various people who were affected by Shinra and their awful use of various small villages for their prototype reactors. Nobody cares about Cid's crushed dreams as much as they care for Aerith. And so for the Midgar-only remake, the death of Wedge, Biggs, and Jessie, *should* have been the defining moment.

There's something else that new tech does to old games. The combat system is a fully interactive thing, and you need to stay on your toes to win the day. You 'could' use the 'classic' setting to shortcut that, but that has virtually no bearing on my opinion. I don't think you could get away with making a 3d RPG with a fully turn-based system and flash-style initiation in the year 2022. Now, coupled with the addition of several sections to the 'dungeons,' and the result is that the game winds up with some very glaring pacing issues. Long, long sections keep the player at high tension levels, with few and short sections with subquesting where the tension is lower. And to try to break up that pace, the delivery on the broader strokes is ham-fisted at best. The reveal of Sephiroth, the interference of the Whispers, it's all just poorly executed. Too "in your face." The result is a game that feels more like an 80's action flick as opposed to a JRPG.

There is some positive news however. With the upgraded graphics comes character representation like nothing we have seen before. Cloud, Barrett, Tifa, Aerith, they have expressions, they speak with real-feeling tonal inflection, and when the camera zooms in, you can just *tell* there is more in their eyes to go with their words. It is truly amazing how the characters come to life, how their interactions reach you in a whole new way. They are a tad over-expressive, perhaps a carry-over from old developers being involved or, some desire to pursue an 'anime' aesthetic. But I think it helps distinguish their personalities.

FF7's music has been remastered so many times it's not even funny. But it has been done very well, with cinematic scoring, and specially tailored to each and every scene. You basically have your bgm for every section of the game, then you have combat music which is basically 'faster' versions. But every piece that would make you nostalgic is there, ready to send you back in time...

The combat system as well, is something to be praised. There's a lot of room for gimmicking the system, and a lot to learn if you put in the time. Or search Youtube videos. I can't do justice to it with words here.

And so overall, I do recommend the game, but it is with great trepidation. There's *a lot* of fan service going on, a lot of pandering. That doesn't have to be a bad thing, people mistake fan service for a lack of passion, I don't feel that's what's going on. I think, if anything, it's *too much* passion. I realize that's being exceedingly charitable, but I get the impression this game is not performing well with sales. At least, not compared to what looks to me like an astronomical cost for development. And if you project that to a sharp decline in future sales, there's no way Square can afford to continue dumping this much money into short segments of the original game. It's just a hunch though.

It feels like par for the course at this point. Has anyone heard of a remake or a sequel that *didn't* get buried in controversy? I think we just have to accept that there is no capturing what made those old things great. Old games, old movies, old comics... They were what they were at their time. And that time has passed. Let them lie in their beautiful graves, surrounded by the flowers of their beautiful memories.

I rate it 6/10. Highly fun and re-playable, but does a pitiful job of honoring the original.

If you played the original, it's amazing to see Midgar not just as blocks of polygons. And not only that, it was interesting to see more depth in the minor characters. If you've never played the original, I can see this standing as its own game and would hope that it inspires some people to play the original. But the original could take a while, so I would actually recommend to beat the game and then read a summary of what happens up to the end of Midgar.

story doesn't make sense if you didn't play the original (this isn't a remake, it's kind of a sequel in an alternate timeline). this is the worst, as i had no idea what was going on and had to read FF7 1997 plot to understand anything.

i'm at the very end of chapter 18 (last chapter) and have no desire to fight the bosses as its all rinse repeat the same strat for 15 minutes to whittle away health. dodge, dodge, wait for ATB gauge to fill up, attack, repeat. easy, boring and I'm playing on "normal" (the hardest difficulty before you unlock hard mode, but I don't understand how someone could be brain dead enough to replay this)

music and visuals are pretty awesome but in 10 years time this game will look dated, but the music will still be good

also funnily enough this is only 1/3 of the original FF7. part 2 is rumored for 2024 release and then based on that timeline part 3 won't come out until 2028. that's fucking pathetic and an obvious cash grab

This game is being milked by the developers. They will make you go through the same areas multiple times to lengthen the playtime of the game and justify charging you $70 for a fraction of the game.

2 hours in. Game is decent, but it’s highway robbery to be charging $70 for a remake.

Looks wonderful, really it does. The reinterpretations of the original music themes are excellent.

The team based hack'n'slash combat (ie. Mass Effect) is fun for awhile until you run into the Nth predictable scripted sequence that drags out yet another otherwise simple map. This game is absolutely padded out with hours of generic fetchy quests and friendship-cartoon BS,

They water down key moments of the game by overly blatant foreshadowing... Right from the get-go they tell you things that are supposed to be subtly hinted at, so that there is impact later on. They pump up the stupid moments, such as the dance-off in the HoneyBee Inn in Wall Market. Fan service. Its okay, It blew the same scenes from the original out of the water, but...

They've softened up the story so much that the more visceral parts, the final scenes that bring the Midgar sequence to a close don't deliver any sense of 'ominous' when the main villain finally shows up. The buildup of tension and sense of danger in the narrative was what kept me playing through the original despite its own major flaws. The remake falls on its face here.

Its like the directors were so afraid of alienating younger people (or ppl who didn't play the original) that they wrote something bland and formulaic with a gorgeous next-gen FF7 graphics package sewed on, instead of allowing the the full spirit of the original story to come through. Heck, they even pull a Han/Greedo at the open of the game and adjust the plot to ensure that 'you' are safely on the moral high ground and definitely not a terrorist. I don't care if you rewrite parts of the plot to adapt to newer media, but clearing out the moral grey areas of the narrative so you don't offend people? Maybe they should have waited another decade to do this.

Since the actual gameplay is mostly awkward, and the original story arc appears to be going the way of Disney Star Wars, I probably won't bother with the rest of the sequels they release after this.

I remember picking up the original FF7 before school at Funcloland. I've been waiting for this forever...

This game runs on rails. It needs an auto play mode so we can just watch it because it's better suited as a movie. The presentation is outstanding, no way around it. The game itself SUCKS. The combat is clunky, not fun, and turn-based was way better suited for the game. I kind of wish I hadn't tarnished the memory of the original with this...

Video games are a drug. In the sense they give you the uncut good stuff to get you hooked. Every time you come back they make the drug weaker and weaker. You have to keep buying more and try all kinds of new drugs. This is why this game is boring and you have 100+ steam games most of which you never really played. $70 for an incomplete game. Tifa has tits the size of moons but they are rock hard as mountains. Constantly seems like Cloud and Sephiroth are about to kiss. Would have been better game if they just went full pedophile rainbow and make it into some hot dic gay fantasy. At least someone would be getting hard. I'm soft, bored and have now been radicalized against the gay agenda.

Just go play the original, which I love. Please ignore this game.

This game is the Final Fantasy 7 equivalent of an anime filler arc. It takes the Midgar section of the original game, which was about a sixth of the game, and then stretches it to fill an entire section of a trilogy. Here's the problem that causes: the Midgar section of the story was the setup, and thus by stretching it out, they made it lose its value as a narrative setup.

All of the changes have one thing in common: bloat. Here are some bad changes:
1: A ton of really annoying moments where everything stops so you can squeeze through something that wastes time. Sure there were ladders in the original, but they were simple and not this bullcrap.
2: Obvious padding in dialog. They seem to intentionally drag out scenes from the original by making them way longer and almost tedious.
3: Sephiroth is setup too early, ruining the value of his later reveal. Kills much of the nuance of the original had which allowed you to notice things on the second and third time you played it.
4: They altered the motivations of characters and their plans/plots, especially Shinra. Now, instead of some of their misdeeds being perpetrated solely based on their callousness and coldness, they threw in a whole plot thread about them trying to reignite the war with Wutai, which complicates things, and is filler plot. But again, the worst is that it recontextualizes the motivations and the internal power dynamic within Shinra by cramming in this bloat. Can't Shinra simply be an evil callous company with the power of the government that is willing to kill a chunk of a city just to stomp out a handful of terrorists? Nope, because that would be more efficient better storytelling, so we cannot have that.
5: Every girl wants to do Cloud. Remember when Jessie was the nerd of the group and her actions were more awkward, and less romantically intended? Well, say goodbye to good character writing. They also changed the context around each character, making Tifa into the "town hottie", which would not be so cringey except that we can see her and know that she is hot. There was like, a couple guys in the original who commented on her looks in Sector 7, but now everyone on the street is talking her up and this even stretches into other sectors of Midgar.
6: The battle system is a mess. On one hand, you MUST switch characters because the AI always prioritizes attacking the character you are controlling. Enemies have the chain damage stagger gauge from 13, yes... they took ideas from FF13... let that sink in for a second... oh... but they implemented it even worse than in 13... allow me to explain. So for reference, in FF13, you filled the stagger gauge, the enemy was staggered, and you could get a damage multiplier against that enemy as a result by keeping up the pressure. In FF7, they have this same system, but with two major caveats: they made it so the damage bonus only applies after you have successfully staggered them, which grossly reduces the tactical value in it, and worse, the gauge will vanish at certain scripted moments during boss fights. The latter of these two means that you will increase the gauge almost to max, or even stagger a boss, only for it to get up and the gauge to empty because you knocked it beneath a certain percent of health, which triggered a cutscene in the middle of the fight. This means that all your time spamming spells and slowly picking attacks specifically for that gauge are wasted; MP wasted, items wasted, ATB wasted. Oh, that's right... I forgot to mention that they messed up the ATB system.
7: Battle System messed up part 2: the ATB system is ruined. Way back, the ATB was the way turns worked. It stood for "Active Time Battle". The turn gauge would charge based on the speed of the character, and then that character could take an action. Well, now most actions consume ATB, but not attacks. Spells, some special actions, and items all consume ATB, but the bar now charges really really slowly unless you are attacking the enemy. You can combo attacks to build the gauge, but this means constantly switching characters to prevent you from taking too much damage because the enemy locks onto whatever character you control, and if you don't then you won't have any ATB to heal because item usage consumes ATB. Apparently, swinging a gigantic sword does not consume ATB, but tossing a magic potion does. T
8: The battle cycle.... every battle has the same routine cycle. Cycle: you attack the enemy and build ATB gauge, enemy targets the character you control while your AI party members do very little, you switch to another party member, you build up ATB, the enemy targets the character you control while your AI party members do very little, you switch to another party member..... get how this works? Of course, there is also the added "and then the gauge emptied because you got the boss to 50% help" bullcrap, but this is not the worst part.

The worst part about this game:
You see, the worst part about this game is not the terrible story changes, awful battle system, nor the terrible ideas they used as filler. No, the worst part is far more insidious. That part is that if you see it in action, you will think it is a good game, but that is entirely different from playing it. This game is, for lack of better words, "beautiful garbage". Sure, it looks nice from a distance, but it stinks up close and belongs in a dumpster. This deceives newcomers into thinking this is peak game, and tricks oldschool fans into thinking that this is a faithful remake, but in the end, it's all an awful lie.

I had quite a lot of fun. There are plenty of pros to be found here such as the overall visual style, the weapon stat customization, the combat skills, the NG+ aka Chapter Selection, but holy smokes, I don't know what's going on with the plot after I beat the game.

I'm going to focus on the cons, while the wounds are still fresh.

The side-quests, a majority of them are forgettable. I finished them off because I like completing things, but man, they are not gonna leave an impact on you. Quite a few of them will have you do some backtracking/retreating completed areas which is beneficial because of the experience from battles. I suppose that's their real purpose, just to give you things and make you stronger. They don't affect the main plot for the most part.

The visual style is great, the uneven textures are the opposite. You're going to see quite a few blurry things. It's that situation where some textures are ultra-mega HD+ and then that piece of paper looks like it appeared from the 90's. I found it to be slightly annoying and slightly disappointing. You're already splitting the source material into three parts so my expectations are going to be higher when it comes to the visuals.

I won't say too much about the plot, but yikes. The game is hitting all the core story beats just fine, but the borderline Kingdom Hearts-esque plot additions are extremely repulsive, especially with the ending. I was left feeling confused and saying "What is going on!?" out loud multiple times with different inflections. It has gone in a direction that will give the writers freedom to add possibly very weird things, but potentially at the cost of the main plot points being rewritten poorly. That's a high risk approach that doesn't leave me with much confidence considering how I felt about the ending that felt like a fan fiction.

I miss being able to summon Summons at will. You cannot do that in this version of FF7. They're only available during major battles. Summons also stick around. They'll help out and cast specific spells at the cost of ATB bars. After they reach their time limit, they use their signature move. Limit Breakers function in the same way. You can't save one for the next battle and can realistically use them only in battles against strong opponents or bosses. This means I'll never have the pleasure of absolutely annihilating a lone Shinra soldier with my strongest skills.

This point is a bit more on the neutral side. This game is fairly linear. I expect the 2nd one to be much more open-world(ish) exploration. FF7 Remake is all about Midgar and Shinra. So if you're looking for an open-world JRPG, this game is not it.

One of the biggest pros that I was impressed with was how they handled weapons. Every new weapon you come across will contain an ability you can learn before swapping back to an old favorite. Each weapon also has a baby sphere-grid solar-looking system to it as well that you can use to increase stats, materia slots, or grant passive skills/combat enhancements. I spent a good chunk of time figuring out how I wanted to do things and went back and forth on which weapons to use depending on who I needed to do what. For example, if you have Cloud as a healer, you probably don't want him to use Hardedge because he'll have a very low magic stat.

Anyway... if you're the kind of person that beat the original FF7 4 times, I believe this game is worth your time for the nostalgia fan service and modernized gameplay. I don't think I can grind like I did before in the same way with the OG FF7 and it's neat to see the differences. I just hope they reign it in with the next installments with the absurdity and mindless side-quests. We'll just have to see where the writing goes in the future and pray this trilogy doesn't become an ill-fated attempt at a remake.

If you need a number: 3.5/5 stars.

I enjoyed the gameplay and some of the additions to the story. It kept true to the spirit of the original and made room for some new material to keep it fresh for the fans from 1997. Ran ok on my mid range PC. Experienced a crash or two, but nothing constant or game breaking. Is the $70 price point reasonable? Depends. The game is free with PS+. After pouring many hours into this game, I really can't recommend it. Not, at least, to western audiances. The localization leaves a little bit to be desired, but that's not even the worst part of the game. There's points where characters will randomly do massive, impossible leaps through the air, and other points where a ledge or lack of a ladder completely stops them in their tracks. Just feels silly.

But the real problem is the fight and boss design. This game's battle system seems to have taken something that could have been good and then purposely removed the things that would allow you to figure anything out. Boss mechanics are frustrating and unclear in how to deal with them. There is an extreme abuse of mechanics that punish you for playing your character, and some bosses where you absolutely must use a specific ability to win, one that it is entirely possible to not have if you didn't equip the right Materia. Some enemies/bosses will go into a counter stance the moment you hit them and if you hit them again, you will be countered in a way that CC's you briefly and does heavy damage. This is frustrating because some characters have multihit attacks that will just get wrecked, or, because it happens too fast, you will never get the chance to realize is happening and will take forever to learn. The flashy effects and visuals are too distracting for what's going on. Some of the fights take forever because of arbitrary near invulnerability or counter states that the developers decided were a good idea. "Use this type of attack and you'll break it!" Essentially, this game was designed for monkeys. It's not a good play experience, and fails to live up to what FF7 was.

Separate issues are how badly executed characters are, except perhaps for Yufie. She was goofy then, she's goofy now. But since the old game was text based, it was easy to read the characters in a better way, so seeing Tifa not be a tough, highly trained fighter or Barret be this... bizarre attempt at an amalgamation of stereotypes? is just an exercise of watching what you loved and what you thought you knew about them be destroyed. These characters are all the same boring stereotypes I've seen come out of Square Enix titles for a long time.

I do give this game credit for trying to be hard, but the current climate of gaming has gone way too far in that direction, and this game is a great example of when that goes wrong. These fights seem not to be intelligently designed, they don't feel play-tested, and many certainly aren't fun. That's not to say there aren't some diamond's in the rough, there are, and there's plenty of good moments in the game. It's just unfortunately more negatives than positives. I could have my own biases and limitations, certainly, but I've been a fan and veteran of various other titles noted for their difficulties, and they all do their mechanics better than this. Difficulty, when obfuscated, is nothing more than frustrating. Mechanics MUST be communicated CLEARLY, or, if obscured, the reason why must then be. You cannot make these long slog style fights where you can only win in a reasonable amount of time if you brought the right Materia (which the game tries very hard to limit how much you can even have in the first place) or ability. In FF7, if you didn't have Lightning equipped, there wasn't a single monster that would immune everything but that and screw you. You were fine, you just took a little longer.

Best game ever made, also Tifa... omg. She is fictional unfortunately, real women are not that... and even if they were, be realistic... try to remember that if you play when male. Also the soundtrack is mesmerizing, although cannot be bought for some reason... That is a shame, because the original soundtrack already was great and they managed to make it better.

They really put some love into this world and the soundtrack especially. You can easily see that the main question the devs asked themselves was: "Can we improve and modernize a near perfect game". I daresay they succeeded, without losing the essence of what made it good in the first place. And i can't say it enough, developers should pay attention to this soundtrack and the seamless flow between action and exploration, it can make a game exceptional for those whom play for adventure and story!

It's an amazing game, if you loved the original one, you will be astounded and delighted to see that world from a first person perspective. The sheer amount of creativity and respect that went into bringing ff7 to live is just humbling. It makes me hope for a an IX remake and an VIII remake, remake them all and i will buy them all... just... put as much love into them as you did here.

It's no longer turn based and brings the action to life far more. Camera angles are tight and take some getting used to but this far I'm very much enjoying reliving this classic.

This instalment only takes you to the point of leaving Midgar, so it doesn't have the free roaming feel of the original yet but hopefully they will link the various episodes together in a way that doesn't make it disjointed or means losing all your efforts.

An itibari ile verdiğim parayı kuruşu kuruşuna değerlendirmiş bulunmaktayım.

Yazdığım zor mod ve başarım rehberine de bakmak ve destek olmak isterseniz;

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2850704992

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JpkkWkDrBU&t=32s&ab_channel=GovouSanr%…

Intermission

It's a disappointing port compared to XV and they didn't make it at all open world as part of the remake, but it's still a fun game.

This is a fantastic remake of an old classic. I have enjoyed going back into this world. The Combat, the character models, the visuals and music is simply top tier. This is how you do a remake. If you love FF7, this is a no brainer to purchase.

Another fantastic Final Fantasy game

I'm going to be a bit harsh, just because VII truly wasn't the best Final Fantasy game in the franchise in my opinion.

The Low Points
- Cloud...isn't a great character... He's an emo boy with social autism, who has 3 girls chasing after him.
- Too many cut scenes, and honestly not enough gameplay...
- The combat system...is okay... they went with a "cool" hack & slash real-time system, where there's a lot of flashy abilities, but the only strategy involves analyzing and knowing the enemy weakness and casting the corresponding spells while rolling around dodging.

The High Points
+ Fantastic graphics, and immersive environments
+ Great characters, personalities, models, voice-acting, etc.
+ The story and side-quests are very well developed and engaging
+ Wonderful soundtrack
+ Memorable boss fights
+ Mature themes
+ Like most JRPGs, plenty of content

Overall, I'd highly recommend playing through Final Fantasy VII Remake Integrade. I'm not a big fan of the modern real-time combat system, but it didn't prevent me from enjoying the game regardless.

Man, am I glad I waited to review this one...

For those of you who didn't play the OG FF7, you likely have no problem whatsoever with this game. Completely oblivious to the original's plot, you likely think the ending of this game is convoluted and confusing, but that's about it.

This review is for the rest of you. Let me preface by saying that I really enjoyed this game, outside of some issues with progression, materia and combat mechanics, but nothing deal-breaking. The visuals are exactly what I was hoping for 7 years ago when I was wowed by that E3 2015 reveal trailer. The way they fleshed out the characters was great, esp the side characters who have little more than a line or two in the OG game. The way they padded out the time to make this a full game in Midgar (though many side quests felt a bit shallow) was done pretty well, definitely better than other games I've played, and felt like it made you care more about the locations/people when tragedy strikes. The game was great through the first 16 chapters.

It all started to go wrong when I realized that they changed the Sephiroth/Jenova reveal. In the original, Cloud and Co. get captured and imprisoned in the Shinra building and then, in one of the most memorable scenes from the first game, they wake up to open prison cells and blood streaked across the floor, up the stairs, and into the Presidents office, where he sat dead, Sephiroth's sword through his back. In the Remake, they include following tracks through the building (though not blood, cuz SE/Sony isn't graphic anymore) but prior to the tracking, they SHOW Sephiroth carrying Jenova through the building, completely removing suspense from one of the most suspenseful scenes from the OG game.

This was disappointing, but it made more sense once I reached the final chapter of the game, and between some confusing flashbacks including one of the FAMOUS DEATH SCENE and enemies that crop up out of nowhere, I was really getting skeptical. And then I went on Reddit to find out what happened. Be warned, I am now going to spoil the ending, though if you stick around, I very well may save you from playing a game that will end with Square Enix ruining your hopes for a faithful FF7 Remake.
.
.
.
.
Ok: THIS IS NOT A REMAKE. It is a sequel. You are playing through events that have already happened in the original game. Sephiroth has used Time magic to try and thwart your (successful) attempt to destroy him and jumped into a time loop of sorts. This premise alone could have held up even, if it weren't for the events of Chapter 18, where you kill the Arbiter of Destiny/Fate, the one who was quietly making sure that this timeline followed the one in the original game, leading to Sephiroth's demise. So now basically SE had you murder the "plot armor" that kept bullshit from tainting the original story, giving them license to completely redo the story however they want to. I guess there is a reason that they kept the subtitle "Remake" on this game, even after announcing there would be multiple games: the first one would be the only true "remake." The others are now free to be completely different games.

So there you have it. I liked this game a lot until the final chapter, and then it became the biggest betrayal I've ever experienced in a video game. Square Enix continues their streak of disappointments

Richter Von'Doom
Richter Von'Doom

Although not a complete Remake, just the first in a planned trilogy. This game shows the slow moments in between the other big moments, as well as setting up/changing future moments. The combat is fun and unique enough to stand out, even if it didn't bring anything new to the genre. I would of liked more control on how my allies performed during battle, when the player isn't the one controlling them. Something like the Gambit system from ff12, or a even tactics setting in the dragon age series. Combat was still enjoyable though, probably the best part of the entire game, I just wish there was more.

Story is familiar and new, and the backstory development we get for some of the other characters are a welcomed touch, the banter between the cast is another part I loved, even if it is cheesy and corny at times, It fits well inside this world and feels right. The entire pacing of the game is kind of annoying at times however. So many slow walk, and follow/escort moments. Some are for cinematic reasons, and others for clearly "were stretching this moment out" reasons. The latter happens to often and its heavily noticeable.

Graphics wise, its "aight". Movie scenes are gorgeous, combat and world scenes are pretty good too. NPCS still look like they are from 2005, and nothing really wowed me, although they're some beautiful scenes, sets, and moments. Ran pretty good at 2k/MAX too and stayed at 144 frames the entire time, minus some stutters in the opening scenes. They seemed to go away.

Replayability is super low, even with the chapter select option after you complete the game. You still have to go through those same glaring slow pacing moments again, which honestly makes replaying this game quite annoying.

And of course the biggest elephant in the room, the content, and the price. This is a third of the original game, and it feels like it, and its not a good feeling. As fun as the roller coaster is, it ends way too soon. The ending is pretty bad, and leaves you with a sour taste of "thats it?". I do look forward to the future releases, but i regret paying 75 Dollars for this game, I wished i would've bought it on sale, and I suggest you do the same.

The DLC, or the Intergrade part, The Yuffie Content is actually astounding. Everything you loved about the original game gets ramped up with less of the stuff i hated, pacing, slow walking moments, and lots of combat. This DLC actually gave me more hope than the ending did. It at least shows that they did learn and improve rather than port over a character for money and nostalgia.

Pros: Combats a blast, more depth to characters we love and grew up with, as well as new players experiencing FF7 crazy rollercoaster. Everything you loved about FF7 is still here plus more, although only 1/3rd of it.

Cons: PRICE, amount of CONTENT, and of course the pacing of the chapters and obvious milking for nostalgia. Graphics could use a bump, and game is very linear.

Final Judgement - Buy this when its on sale, or wait 5 years when they re-release it as one package with the other two games for probably an abursrd amount of money then too.

How do you make a familiar story be interesting again?

REMAKE it.

I feel sorry for those idiots out there giving this game a negative review only because it didn't stick with the OG FF7 story.
Why? Because you just didn't get it.

For the old gamers who played this game a long time ago, FF VIII Remake is a very well done game. Voices are added to the dialogue, the main story is pretty much followed how it was with some little missions added here and there. Nothing major. Also, the caracters are much more developped.
It is basically Final Fantasy VII, if it were made today instead of 25 years or so ago.
It is more Action RPG than a turn base RPG as it was. But it just makes the game a bit more engaging.
For those who haven't played the game yet, get ready for a ride of joy.
I'm just about to go in for the second reactor. Let's see it the game still holds!

Amazing amount of detail put into this remake, yes it's slowed down the pacing with some extra quests but with so much work put into it, it would be a shame to just rush through and miss out on the extra fan service. Enjoying the switch to real-time combat as well, and I like how it incorporates parts of the original battle system. Highly recommended.

Had some intermittent stuttering, but just had to enable v-sync in the nvidia control panel and now it's running perfectly.

I tried to like this game but I miss the turned based combat to much. If you are looking for a shinny remake with the same great combat, this isn't it. At most they could of added this feature in this version.

Super entertaining and looks amazing but does not properly capture the story of the original FF7. The story it gives is still really good. However, I would 100% recommend players to play the original FF7 as well as crisis core and the story in the remake will check out much better. The combat system feels incredibly smooth and very fast paced. The perfect remake with the exception of the "scattered" story elements.

So this game is a hard maybe for me and I want to lead with some things that need to be said.

This game is fucking fun. The battles and materia are just fun and well done.

This game is fucking beautiful and sounds amazing! All the visuals are on point, the sound track is next level and the sounds design is top notch.

Now that being said there are issues. This game is very slow and weighed down by a ton of filler content. There are several sections that you need to walk at a painfully slow pace with nothing to do which makes replaying the game hard.

Anime bullshit is strong in this game and very strong in intergrade. For some people that is fine, for me it hurts.

Finally this is a remake not a remaster. They are making huge changes to the story and the characters. This is not the final fantasy you remember. I you are okay with all that this game is going to be amazing for you. I just wish they would have been more forthcoming with the truth so I didn't have to warn everyone else about this stuff.

Horrible. I was so excited for a remake but this isn't a remake. It's a completely different game with nothing in common with the original, not even the plot. I beat the game in 17 hours and it just felt like 3 hours of content stretched that for. 0/10 would not recommend.

The developers did a great job with this remake.

The things I like:
- The game is really beautiful. It's so polished and the atmosphere is perfect. I think it may be one of the prettier games I have ever played.
- Voice acting is top-notch.
- The music is top-notch, and I really like how well it matches the in-game experience.
- The combat generally feels great and can be the right amount of challenge. I really do like how they mixed action and tactical decision making into the fights.
- The story broadly kept the same main story beats as the original. I overall like the pacing.

The not-so-good
- I wish there was a little bit more decision making in weapon upgrades.
- I feel like their could be some more interesting materia combination interactions. I feel like the interactions aren't currently all that interesting like in the original.
- Small thing - but I wish the weapon UI had a summary of all the effects that are in place.
- Air combat feels pretty clunky.
- While the game is generally faithful to the original story, I do think its appropriate that the developers made some changes to keep veterans some surprises. However, regarding the ending: I am a bit nervous that the story seems to be heading into a multiple-timeline / multiple universe direction. I just find this sort of story trope to be less enjoyable. I'm happy for them to put in some changes to keep veterans surprised, but I think this is a bit too large of a change for me if they go in this direction.

False Advertising: Not a "Remake" But a "Retelling."
That didn't have to be a bad thing, but it's boring side missions,
filler, drag it out to hit a 'full game' runtime. If it was adapting the
full original game, that'd be fine. But this is
only the Midgar section. And that's not even getting to the ghosts,

Pros:
1. Beautiful graphics. Mesmerized by character details. Specially if you have played the original.
2. Improved battle system: Instead of turn based attacks, there is real time action.
3. Beautiful cinematics to showcase the story

Cons:
1. Too many small cinematics: Even small events like: characters moving past a door can result in player losing control of characters and camera because a cinematic starts with characters having some trivial talks. It feels like an interruption to the game, specially if you like running around the map with your gang and kill some enemies.
2. Limited time playing Aerith: Due to the story plot, I felt you get quite less time to play and improve Aerith character (and her weapons). In the endgame, 4 characters split in party of two and you get very few chances to enjoy playing a full party of your choice. I felt as if game mechanics couldn't allow for a party of four, so they forced story such that party was split in groups of two in some of the missions. Left me feeling dissatisfied
3. Bug in battle: sometimes the characters which you don't control stand idle and contribute nothing to damaging the enemy.

SavageMobius
SavageMobius

i REALLY REALLY REALLY want to promote this game.

Cons:
Its very very good until the end and then it turns into an absolute piece of shit. The motorcycle portion of the game is garbage and all of the last boss fights are awful. I have died 3 times and my characters have completed all side quests up to this point. Its just damage sponge awfulness. The game designers should have just stuck to the original game and let the team escape Midgar without all this extra bullshit. The end of anything is so important and this was executed poorly

Good:
Everything else, and i mean EVERYTHING else.

I have not played the original, but I played FF7 Crisis Core.

Gamers who enjoy beautiful visuals, a heroic story, and world building should check this game out!

The characters interact well together. I found myself eventually loving 90% of the cast and supporting characters.

There are some story elements that confuse me as they will be elaborated on in upcoming games. I was very happy to see Crisis Core related cutscenes.

Weapon and ability mechanics take a bit of focus to understand. Each character has unique and fun playstyles. Switching between characters is simple enough.

The mix of real-time and menu combat can get physically dizzying with the stop and go playstyle. I like that I can naturally slow down the fight to think and plan out my next moves.

I would highly recommend this game for anyone interested in immersing themself in the universe of Final Fantasy VII.

after 25.4 hours of game play, after meticulously doing every single side mission, every main mission, aquiring every materia, every summons, smashing every bow, running every side path, doing 100% of the game up until the point in the game that i was at, Steam or ff7r decided to DELETE MY 3 SAVED GAME FILES and i now have to restart the fucking game and do it all over again. And i am NOT the only person who has experienced this. It is all over the internet. i bought an overpriced game that was already not worth that very high price tag, especially for an only PARTIAL remake of the original game, now i have to restart all over again. if i was able to refund this game at this point i absolutely would in a fucking heartbeat.

Overall, very nice remake. Currently in Chapter 13 after the plate is dropped, so my thoughts could change later in playthrough. The battle system is fun, challenging, and engaging, and story seems consistent with the original (mainly extra sections that don't affect the overall story, but give more background, gives you more to do). Feels like Cloud has more flashbacks and visions of Sephiroth early in the game than in the original, but this isn't bad.

One thing I don't like is how the game strongly pressures you to follow the path (rather than find it on your own). It's more than just your other party members making a comment about how you might not want to leave a section till you find all the treasures (which is believable from a role playing perspective), but sometimes the game just pops up a dialog telling you are about to leave stuff behind and you won't be able to come back (for optional things like a piece of materia), or, for mandatory plot, the game starts flashing a 'warning', to tell you are off the path. This is not good, I think, the game should let you solve or fail to solve problems, find stuff on your own.

Me before I opened up the game:

"I've been wanting this, but I must steel myself. There's no way this lives up to the nostalgia of the original. Nostalgia makes you look at stuff through rose colored eyes, and other than graphics, even if it's better than the original, it's going to feel worse. I'm expecting to be disappointed."

Me, having played most of the first run through:

Me: Loving characters I barely even noticed before
Me: Feeling sorry for one of *the monsters*
Me: Right there beside Barrett as he screams out in anguish
Me: Developing a hatred of Shinra deeper than ever before.
Me: Being unable to stand because of so many emotions.

Me: Staring at Remake, after floored for thirty minutes: "How... how did you surpass not just one of the greatest games of all time, but overshadow it multiple times over?

=====================================

Now, a less 'experience' review, and a more standard review:
Legend:
Normal text: This is a review of the game as standalone.
Italics: This is a review of a comparison between the original and the remake.

Cons:
- Gameplay is mostly linear with a few branches and areas with assorted missions. Honestly, nothing to get excited about here. It's not truly open world. However, in the original FF7, the game wasn't really open world during the Midgard section, which is pretty much what this game covered. FF7 didn't become open world until past the end of this game, and not being truly open world fit, as once you left Midgard in the original game was a breath of freedom, both plot-wise and gameplay mechanics.
- You will want a beefy machine to play this game.
- Materia breeding is gone. Honestly, materia feels noticeably shallower than it used to be. So if you were excited about breeding materia again, you'll be disappointed on that front.

Pros:
- The graphics are beautiful.
- Just because of requirements of voice vs pure text, there's less dialogue in FF7: Remake than there is in the original. However, that doesn't hold it back at all. In fact, it feels so much better crafted than the original. It feels like not a word is wasted. The characters are engaging, the world is far more interesting than before, and they dive into the feelings and emotions that flow about the plot points much moreso than before. The world is alive and rich, and I care for so many of the characters so much.
- Other than FF7: Remake and original , there's few games that show the stratification of society more than this, and you feel it in nearly everything you do. The world feels like what it should.
- [i] The weapons system, besides materia, is improved. You technically have less weapons (though then again, you didn't get tons of weapons before leaving Midgar in the original), but those weapons level and grow through the SP system.
- The writing for a bunch of the characters is so much deeper than before. In the original, I barely felt it when the plate came crashing down, and multiple citizens and avalanche members died. However, in Remake, with the mercentary missions & general plot, I got to know these characters so much deeper. It was no longer a plot point when the plate came crashing down, it was personal. I knew so many of the people who it came down. It felt personal.

Final Fantasy VII is one of the first games that I played in my youth that hooked me on to Japanese Role Playing Games. I can recall the countless hours I spent grinding through this mammoth sized game. Through the years, I had always wondered what this title would be like if it was made in the modern era. Now I know the answer.

I already completed Final Fantasy VII Remake on the PS4 but when it stealth dropped on Steam there was no question I was going to take the ride again. This game has everything that you want out of a modern Final Fantasy title, while paying massive respect to what made it so charming in the first place.

In contrast, it was easier to assume the characteristics of the characters involved when playing on the original PlayStation system. Seeing as how facial expressions couldn't really be rendered in a way to successfuly convey emotional effects, a lot of that depended on the dialogue, which at many times came off as more humorous than deep or heavy (Marlene!).

The materia system in remake is very well done. I would have preferred if they kept in the ability to "grow" materia from the original, which was when you mastered a particular materia it would spawn a new one that you could then shell off to another character. There are some materia that I felt they should have had more of in the game (elemental and magnify aka all) but looking at how the pace of the game goes I totally get why they didn't It just makes sense to have the materia that you do have and to focus on the effectiveness of how you "build" your particular character.

One of my favorite things they've done in this game is they have evenly paced the growth of the limit gauge. This may come off as a subtle detail for some, but when you are in a fight that is truly pushing your "limits" (see?) and that gauge starts to shine, if it isn't curtains for the enemy then it will certainly turn the tide of the battle so that you have more of a chance to come out on top. I also like that limit breaks aren't guaranteed, if you just blindly perform one without an enemy being present, then you've wasted a lot of energy for absolutely nothing.

Overall, this is a fantastic game. While I wish they'd have found a way to just come out with one complete remake of a game, I do appreciate what we got and I am totally looking forward to the future of Cloud Strife and his band of friends.

Decent game, bad pricing

Before I start this review: I have never played any Final Fantasy games in its entirety (apart from PSP Dissidia) and therefore I cannot judge this game relative to the other Final Fantasy games, in other words, I am a complete stranger to the Final Fantasy franchise.

Since I was always interested in the story of FF7, I bought the game day one it was released on Steam and was kind of baffled about the pricing. 80 EUR is a hefty price for a game, I am aware of the fact that video game pricing increase is inevitable (in 2022), but this game was originally released for the PS4 in 2020 and is already two years old hence this release is only a port. If the game would have been released on PC and PS simultaneously, I would have still disliked the pricing, but it wouldn't have been as important for me as it is in this case.

Apart from the pricing, the characters and the story of the game is pretty good. Characters feel very human, with their own strengths, fears and ambitions. The interactions between them was something I was always looking forward to.
The story of the game also seems interesting, but I have not witnessed something in the story which I would describe as "moving" or "brought me to tears" (but it is only 1/3rd of the story).

Sadly the gameplay is not as good as I would have wished for, which is also the reason why I decided to not recommend the game.
In combat you have (most of the times) a selection of characters which you can fight with and all of them have their own unique playstyle, but the worst thing about the gameplay is the enemy and boss design.
At the beginning you can just smash all opponents without hassle, but around the middle game and especially at the end game the enemies and bosses just exist to annoy you. I have seen many bad enemy and boss designs thanks to Dark Souls 2, but this game could rival Dark Souls 2 in terms of bad enemy and boss design. There are a lot of enemies and bosses that have way to high stagger damage, which causes you to be staggered instantly by any small attack. Some enemies shoot multiple shots which are close to undodgeable, where if you get hit one times, you are forced to take all the other hits too because you're staggered. Blocking is not always an option since some attacks just straight up ignore blocking or still apply some heavy amout of damage inspite of blocking.
The peak of bad boss design was Rufus and the only decent boss fight was Sephiroth .
There are some more negative points about the gameplay (for example that the enemies constantly focus the player even if they just changed character), but I writing further about the gameplay would go beyond the scope of this review.

Questing in this game sadly feels meaningless, you don't get proper character interactions when doing or finish the quests and the rewards are also lackluster, but at least the quests are optional and can be skipped however you like.
Throughout the world, you will also meet some mini-games with various rewards and all of them are quite fun.

Overall the graphics and scenery looks good, there are some rough edges here and there, especially the faces of unimportant NPC look disgusting, but those are problems which can be ignored and do not bother.

To wrap it all up: I would have recommended this game, if it would be priced around 50EUR, but 80EUR for a game of this caliber is way to much. If I compare the quality of Elden Ring (a game which has been released this year and is priced for 25% less) with FF7 Remake, then I would definitly say that FF7 Remake does not justifies its price with its quality.

Pretty good game. As an RPG, this game does superb. It gives all characters their chances to shine with their roles actually being meaningful. Combat is somewhat similar to what the Tales series does, but better. In Tales, you could go through the entire game fighting with only a single character, but with FF7R you are encourage and pushed to utilize the different party members and give their moment to shine. It is rare to find a game which utilizes the different playstyles of their party members well. Story is ok, I guess. It's the first part of a trilogy (I had to look that up) which explains why the ending felt so empty. Also like the way the game can seamlessly transition from gameplay to cutscene. An 8/10 game so far.

I had tried to play the original FFVII in the past, and I could never get very far due to the old graphics and lack of voices, but I wanted to enjoy the story and I even struggled watching other people play due to the lack of voices. I would get antsy and restless and I couldn't focus on either playing or watching the original.

Now, while this game has made it very clear that it is not going to follow the original word for word, I don't view that as a negative thing. I am really intrigued with the thought of things playing differently this go around, as it means you won't know what to expect.

It plays well for me at least, and there isn't any real part of the game that I dread having to replay through or grind over. There are a few side quests, but they aren't overbearing and are completely optional. They aren't cookie cutter side quests, either, which is pleasant for sure. There really isn't any need for grinding unless you are wanting to max out your materia quickly and build up your GIL.

I enjoyed playing through this, and I eagerly wait for the next installments, as well as the remastered/remade Crisis Core that is on the way. I am eager to see where the story goes in the future releases, and hope we won't have to wait a year after release to get them on steam, again.

It's hitting all of my nostalgia buttons.

Who doesn't want to be a spiky-haired-eco-terrorist-vigilante with magic and a giant ass sword? Amirite???

I didn't understand much of the story in the original when I was younger and am happy to experience a retelling of it with a fresh coat of paint. Also, don't let the originalists fool you, the combat is interesting and the story is still good, even if it's not 100% the same as the original.

I wouldn't want to play the original game again anyways. Times have changed and I look forward to seeing what they've done differently and what they're planning for the future episodes of the game.

If you liked the original, you'll absolutely love the remake.

The Good:
- Amazing graphics
- Top-notch soundtrack
- Great story, even better than the original
- Fluid combat

The Bad:
- Overly-sexualized female characters that spend all their out-of-combat time posing and throwing themselves at Cloud. It's sad, because they've had some good backstory added and seem like genuinely interesting characters, but then they start sticking out their chests and acting like bimbos. It's jarring and unrealistic.
- Cloud's dialog. No, I don't want to spend 30 seconds watching him make weird noises and avoid eye contact.
- Barrett's dialog. It's like they took every stereotype of an aggressive black male thug and rolled them into one bizarre package. I didn't think they could make him any less believable than the original game (he was almost literally Mr. T with a gun for an arm), but they managed it somehow.

This game is a Masterpiece. Yes the PC port has flaws. Even with that considered, the game as it is, is brilliant. I try not to over hype games I have not finished, but I did play the game on PS4 2 years ago. The combat feels amazing, the character customization is deep, the voice acting is spot on, the visuals are stunning, the bosses are cinematic and engaging, the twists in the story keep you guessing even if you played the original game. To this day I remember the first time I ever played the original game. Some of my most vivid gaming memories are of FFVII. Remake brings me back to those days in a big way. Nostalgia, I'm sure, plays a role in my appreciation for this game, but it is not the whole story. The price is justified for this incredible adventure.

I could go into a lot of detail but to summarize, I got my psx for ff7 in 1998 and played it over and over. It's one of my most played console games of all time. For the remake, I heard some of the plot changed and other things. I consider myself a purist though I am still a fan of most square remakes. FF7R completely remakes everything and I can honestly say it has still got to be one of the greatest games I have ever played. Music, story, graphics, voices, gameplay, everything is a 10/10 for me. I consider this a must play, new fan or old. I hope that part 3 comes out not too long after 2023.

riccal

I'd say this is a thumbs up if and only if you are a fan of the original and are open to a story that ends up having almost nothing to do with the original game's. If you either don't like the original or are expecting a straight one-to-one remaster, this game is probably not for you.

Combat is fun, but fairly straightforward. Each of the four playable characters have a unique playstyle, but combat still usually devolves into spamming high staggering attacks (either spells or abilities that have an increased stagger), then slamming the staggered enemy with all of your biggest attacks while they have the damage multiplier.

Voice-acting is unsurprisingly okay, but not great. There are are a lot of moments where characters just "humph" or "uhhh" in awkward ways.

Music is phenomenal though. Both the the orchestral covers that stick very much to the original music and the remixes sound great.

It can be kind of hard to fault the linearity of the story because of how very linear the Midgar portion of the original is, but almost the entire game is just a case of get from point a to point b and kill whatever mobs spawn in between the two. I know that the original was worse at this point of the story, and the open world doesn't actually open up until the team leaves Midgar, but it still doesn't feel great.

I won't get into the story, for the sake of spoilers, but if you know anything about the story in the original, just know that that ain't the story you'll be playing. It start's off the same and following the same plot, but quickly takes a sharp turn off to wacky-land. Personally, I enjoyed the twist, but I also know not everyone will agree.

I really didn't want to miss out on the sale. So far, I'm enjoying the game. I'm sure there will be a harder difficulty available after game completion but on Normal it's too easy. Which is good for those just wanting to enjoy the game for the story line. Also, the game play is similar to FF15. I actually prefer this style of FF. I haven't met any enemies yet with a ridiculous health level so I'm happy. The odd characters are in this game. For some reason, there always has to be one. For example, Roche. For stuttering issues, I've only noticed it during the intro scene when it shows Cloud. When I checked my settings, the game had me at 30fps when it should be at 60fps. After making the change, I stopped getting the stuttering. Although, I do get frame drops but it doesnt happen too often. When it does happen, it's not even more than a second. I don't think it's a hardware issue. I get this same bug with other games too. But when I have v-sync turned on, I no longer have that issue with those other games. So, having v-sync as an option in this game might fix a lot of people's complaint. My monitor is 1920x1080. Here are my computer specs: Ryzen 5 3600/GTX 1650 Super/16gb ram. It's a fairly cheap setup for PC. Also, young Cloud and young Tifa look like Sora and Kaira.

I did not want to give FF7 a thumb down but the combat system is just too atrocious and irritating.
Square Enix have made this realtime combat system only to mock us.

Evasion has no invincibility frames and the evade distance is too short. If the attack has some degree of tracking then it's likely they are not evadable. Why did SE even bother to put in an evade button. Even some mob attacks that look like they should be evadable in any half decent action combat game will hit you while you are evading.

Enemies show warning signs when they start to use unguardable attacks, but not for all of them. So here we are, Cloud Strife, SOLDIER 1st class smacking some non SOLDIER human mid boss with his giant ass sword and they don't even flinch. But a single punch without the warning sign will knock you back on your ass through your giant sword blocking.

This game is more than 50% more expensive than an AAA action game like god of war but SE has managed to make the realtime action combat system more like a turn based combat. What a waste of a good title.

I had initially bought this on ps4 back when the game came out, after watching the game be teased for years and years. I enjoyed the time I spent with it, but I never finished it for one reason or another. When I saw it had come to steam I decided to get it on a whim cause I hadn't touched my consoles in ages.

Personally I loved it. The combat in this game is PHENOMENAL. If there is one thing this game succeeds at its this. its a engaging mix of real time and turn based combat that I loved and is some of the best combat I've seen in a video game in awhile. The soundtrack also stands out to me - tracks like "Midnight Rendezvous" and "Seven Seconds till the End" are highlights in a game full of phenomenal tracks.

The game isn't perfect however. A lot of the side quests feel tedious to do and seem to be thrown in just to give players something to do - looking for cats around the slums feels very boring. There are a few that stuck out, such as when Cloud is tasked with killing "The Toad King" by a group of kids, but most of them are entirely forgettable. There are some performance issues as well. While it wasn't super frequent for me (I have a RTX 2070 graphics card just for clarification) there were frame rate drops in some of the cut scenes, especially those heavy with particle effects.

Regarding the story, I haven't played the original but I enjoyed the story in this game. All the content in the main story feels worthwhile and i think the added content makes for a more fleshed out experience. I can see why some wouldn't want changes to the original, but I think it makes a lot of the events later on in the game more impactful than they would have been otherwise.

I think this is the best final fantasy game square has put out in some time. ff15 was incredibly lackluster for me, ff14 I couldn't feel engaged with story wise even if the combat was fine- but this one felt magical.

I feel I was robbed of the time I spent to see how they ruined one of the favourite games of my childhood.
You can play and enjoy this game, but don't have any expectation and wait for it's price to lower. It's not worth 60€ and probably not even 30.
It's all about running through corridors and killing easy enemies for about 30h (I have 40 h afk on this game), with no open world and minimal rewarding for exploration, mmorpg's like quests ( retrieve my medicine from the doctor, find my cat, find my bird, look for the kids and so on) and a largely rewritten history that makes me ask: didn't you had one already? The original ffVII wasn't enough?

Great revisit to the game. I loved the cut scenes, but a lot of things were just a little too slow for my liking. Why is this person with god like physical ability walking this slowly across a pipe? and why are there so many pipes that need crossing to begin with. Also the tight/crawl spaces. The bike missions were an absolute chore, as well as some of the bosses with immediate counter mechanics. I still absolutely loved the game, it was breathtaking seeing some of my favorite places from the original (church, Aerith's house, Midgar as a whole) remade. Also, the aerial combat, pretty much forcing me to use magic (not my favorite), was much too frequent for my liking. Great game though otherwise!

Very streamlined retelling and expansion of the Midgard part of the original Final Fantasy VII with many improvements to the depth of setting and characters. Tifa and Aerith are great, Barret brings some wild-eyed zealot vibes to the party and everyone's stakes seem raised compared to the original. The battle system molds itself to the habits of the player; I prefered to let characters attack on their own and slow down the action to throw in specific commands when situations called for it. A thoroughly enjoyable and flashy game.

So this review comes from someone that has barely played the original FF7 or any of it's side stories. With that said although while I feel that the game on the whole could be more thoroughly enjoyed for those that have prior knowledge of the original story, I do feel that the story for anyone new to the game is perfectly fine. It has it twists, character development and overall stupid, cheesy segments.

The combat and the graphics are really what steal the show and what most would consider the main reason to pick the game up. And I can say that although the combat can be bulldozed through with enough perseverance, the variety in what you can do and how to outfit your characters is quite nice, between outfitting certain Materia and the different weapons you can make the playable cast how you see fit such as making Barret into a magic user.

As for the graphics the game does look rather amazing at times. Granted most of the color scheme is a bunch of dull colors so things can feel muted throughout most of it, but the detail on the models and textures is commendable. Though I am somewhat disappointed that the only graphical options are high and low for both textures and shadows.

The last thing I'll touch on is that the game does have a beefy amount of context to it, being around 30 or so hours. Along with the fact that there's items locked in hard mode as well as grinding characters and Materia you can spend easily dozens of hours getting absolutely everything. Along with the Intergrade side story featuring Yuffie

I'm glad they made this and it is a good game.... but just go buy in on PS. Seriously they didn't even try to make it playable for PC. What few keybindings they did are pathetically tragic and the ones they didn't do you literally have to sit there and setup yourself even if you have a controller and even then you have to somehow figure out how to work it between both keyboard and controller to even get it setup. Even a bare minimum effort would have made this an enjoyable game but they couldn't be bothered because as always the have zero respect for anyone who isn't on PS console.. This is so typical of them unfortunately.

It was good BUT it was only the midgar section of the game.
TOO EXPENSIVE for just that bit of the game. left disappointed in the end.
It worked on my laptop which i was supprised.

Be aware that this is literally Disc 1. That pissed me off proper; however, it was a great re imagination of the game. I just wish it didnt seem like a 4 year money grab to come out with disc 2. some bull shit

phenomenal game. Not only does it have an excellent story, music and setting, but surprisingly the battle system with its ATB gauges, materia and weapon upgrade systems is addicting as hell! I can recommend it to fans of the original and also for those who are not!
