The game is very visually pleasing with bright pixel artstyle and good animation. Platforming and puzzles feel weak, they don't pose much challenge. Combat is your typical hack and slash, just mash attack and dodge your way through. The story progression is linear and generic, don't expect anything from the plot. Overall Flynn's kind of half-baked, a bit of everything but still uncertain. 7/10, buy it if it's on sale.

The only downside is that it's a bit too easy. Otherwise a fun and straightforward action platformer worth your money!

Flynn: Son of Crimson is everything you’ve seen before in the action / platform genre. While it follows a predictable formula, it’s presentation shines, as do some of its gameplay ideas.

Pros:

The pixel art and animation are great. Flynn offers fun, whimsical stages that vary in environmental themes and cartoon-themed enemies that serve as a perfect compliment. Additionally, some of the level background layers and scrolling effects are done well and add to the overall charm.

The sections with Dex (your faithful dog companion) are truly a highlight. I think there was a missed opportunity to have larger portions of game feature Dex, even if it was an optional portion of the stage.

Some levels feature unique sections leading to the boss encounter which diverge from the typical platforming.
For example, in the Marksman levels, you need to avoid his shots, while concurrently having the target reticle destroy specific environmental barriers. These sections are great.

Cons:

The enemy HP is set too high. This is not a commentary on the difficulty, rather, having to perform two-three combos per enemy elicits boredom and serves only as artificial padding.

The world map has an odd layout with different gates leading to new areas. While Super Mario World succeeds because of its varied environments, it’s cumbersome in Flynn and diminishes the scale of your adventure.

The map lockdown sections where not fun and didn’t add anything meaningful to the core gameplay or story progress. Like other aspects of Flynn, it felt like padding.

A game with no original ideas, but very good pixel art. Enemies felt scattered around with no purpose, the story was boring with way too much text to care, and the bosses were super easy if you had your meter charged up. This would be a great game for a kid, but if you are looking for a game with meat you should look elsewhere.

Flynn: Son of Crimson is an enjoyable platformer. I didn't find in amazing, but wanted to keep playing until I finished the game. I found the movement and combat felt just a tick too slow and the level design struck me as a bit boring. With that said, the pixel art is absolutely gorgeous and the music, setting, and overall charm of the game kept me engaged.

Although, the game is very linear, I liked the slight metroidvania elements of unlocking new abilities that let you go back to earlier levels and find alternate exits. I also really enjoyed the skill tree and the hidden relics in each level which give the game more substance. The game is relatively easy (playing on medium) but not in a way that detracted from the fun.

All in all, if you like vibrant pixel art and platforming games, this is a good one to pick up. If you're more indifferent to that style and genre, this game probably isn't going to make you change your mind.

Smooth responsive controls, and nice animation of pixel graphics. I have played almost 3 hours into the game, and have enjoy'd the entire time playing this game. That being said there has been nothing yet to set this game apart from any other side scrolling game out there. If you like pixel style side scrolling games then I would say get this one you should enjoy it.

My rating for this game is 6 out of 10.

P.s. I have never given a game more then an 8 out of 10, anything i feel is a 6 or higher is considered a good game as far as I am concerned.

The controller vibration has to support striking enemies as it feels half baked. All pixel centric games with controller support with adventure themes have hitting vibration of attacks.

Also, fix your swinging code for attacks. I hate the player can swing and stay suspended in the air for an extra second.

Стиму очень не хватает нейтральной оценки...

Flynn: Son of the Crimson Frankenstein.

Momodora: Reverie Under The Moonlight.

So I backed this on Kickstarter (yep another one) approx 4 years ago. It's been so long I had completely forgotten the game was even being developed tbh. That happens alot on KS. You back something and then forget about it as it gets delayed. lol

Anyway, I must say I obviously saw something good 4 years ago which prompted me to back it as the game is really good. It's a beautiful 2D pixel platformer, with quite a few genres thrown into the mix. It's being compared to Shovel Knight, but for me it actually gives me Duck Tales vibes with a bit of Alex Kidd. The controls are responsive, which you need in a platformer and you always know where you need to go so following the correct path is straight forward.

I'm having a lot of fun with it so far and even though I expect it won't take that long to complete 100%, that's not a bad thing as sometimes it's just nice to have a well done compact game, at a cheap price. There are a good set of achievements to unlock as well which is always nice.

If you love 2D action pixel platformers with some puzzles thrown in then this won't disappoint.

I haven't played a game that has nailed 2D action and platforming like this in a long time. Flynn: Son of Crimson may be a mouth-full of a title but it is an excellent game and well worth your time.

The level design is varied and a lot of fun to explore -- you can tell there was a lot of work going into the handcrafting of the levels. The combat itself is smooth, with a lot of different actions and abilities that can be unlocked. When something screws up, it's pretty easy to point out where I screwed up instead of thinking the game screwed me. The music is exceptional and the world is colorful and a delight to explore. Plus, there's a big, cute, fluffy dog that you get to take on WALKIES! What's not to love?

I went into this game with some pretty high expectations based on what I had seen and read. So far, those expectations have been greatly exceeded. Flynn: Son of Crimson is one of the easiest recommendations I've made all year.

What can I say? Well worth all those years of waiting.
Gameplay is tight and responsive, with lots of fun gimmicks that are easy to understand, and fun to master. Skills may be shared between weapons, but each weapon and their skill variations are useful and fun. Dex. Magic is fun and easy to use, with lots of applications. Did I forgot Dex? Wish there was more doggo scenes...
Graphics are the pinnacle of pixel art, colorful and detailed. Special effects look perfect.
Story is simple "adventure" fare, the kind you find in ye classic shounen tale (I can think on a few similar examples), and that is fine by me.
Music is spot on, with a hint of Celtic/Irish rhythms, very cool during the boss fights and challenges.
And while a longer experience would have been cherry on the cake (I finished the game on Normal difficulty in 9-10 hours), there is just enough content to satisfy my platformer crave. And I am going to be replaying this game again, and again. and again, since it is just the right combination of good ol' platformer goodness.
Bravo, Studio Thunderhorse, for your debut game, you made an instant buy for any fan of classic hack n' slash platforming. Can't wait for your next game.
And you, review reader, what in the name of the Crimson are you waiting for?! Buy the game, and support Studio Thunderhorse so they can bring us Rozia's tale, for I sure as hell want to see what she would do next.

Pacing is very well done. The journey has a simple beginning, but quickly ramps up as you constantly gain new weapons, techniques, and magic. No 2 levels are the same, making it to treat to see each new idea every time a stage begins. Boss fights are especially fun with a wide array of moves to learn to outdamage your foe. The crimson cherry on top is the beautiful pixel artwork making the game a treat for the eyes the entire time you play. This is a must play for fans of action platformers or anyone looking for a lighthearted romp through a charming fantasy world.

Smiliar to Momodora, in general, this game is kind of enjoyable, but still have improvement spaces.

Pros:
- Great character design and illustrations
- Weapons system, each weapon has different effects according to abilities, and is suitable againest different enemies
- Interesting maps and mechanisms, such as underwater bubble fish, ice block and frozen spring can be used as ground

Cons:
- Healing is such a pain, when Y is pressed you are like stunned for 1.5 seconds, very likely to take damage during boss fight
- Combo system is not very fluent, when repeatly pressing X attacks, it's impossibe to mix up/down X to trigger special abilities
- The random invade level is very interruptive sometimes..

The game is lovingly made and has good gameplay. The combat system is a bit too sluggish for my taste, but still good. I expected a little more from backtracking, but there are hardly any elements of it. The story is secondary - typical indie story. The price is already really high for 6.5 hours for the story and around 10 hours for 100% (estimated). Price-performance ratio is really not good. With what I know today, I would not buy it again for this price. But i had fun anyway.

I've been following Flynn's development for a bit over three years now, and I'm so happy to play the game that's come of it. The controls are smooth, the music is phenomenal, and the narrative is quite enjoyable. Flynn really shines with how satisfying controlling Flynn himself is, as well as the amazing level design, both from a gameplay and an artistic standpoint.

A fantastic 2D action-platformer that's absolutely worth picking up.

I was really looking forward to this game since I saw it back in like 2019 and overall I wasn't badly disappointed. It wasn't anything crazy new or stellar but the dev team made an entertaining game for their first PC/full fledge game outing. Overall its an 8/10 if you like action platformers but don't want something too complex or long.

Gameplay 8/10: the combat was decently challenging at times on the hardest difficulty. and the ablites although not deep were fun to use. And I love the crimson mode or fury mode mechanic wish more games had a super mode lol

Graphics 9/10: the visuals were the thing that drew me to this game in the first place the art and actual in game graphics are great and I love the style. only gripe for me is the weird mouth animation I noticed on the npcs.

Story 6/10: the story is the weakest part for me. feels weirdly rushed and expository at times like everyone just comes up and explains whats happening and you barely see what the main villan has done no one in the game seems distressed. there is just no interesting hook or motivation. Just a underwhelming to me.

Music 9/10 the music is great in this game although it may be just my taste. the soundtrack gives a mystical feel or a menacing feel like in the last boss fight. actually felt tension from just the music. although again might just be my taste lol

idk why I wrote a whole review lol. I hope to see studio thunderhouse go on make even bigger and better games!

Flynn: Son of Crimson is an action adventure game where you, Flynn, are out to save the world. It is as simple as that. With so many options available how does Flynn stand out?

I my opinion, it doesn't. Though it has excellent pixel art, soothing music, and tight controls it brings nothing to really grab the player. Though an action-adventure game the game falls flat on both fronts. Combat consists of swinging two to three times, roll dodge, and do it again. There is nothing kinetic or makes a player think; its just bog standard stuff. Which is shame because the store animations show cool, sweeping attacks that flow one into another with force and power. Yet this is a temporary power-up that requires minutes of uninspired combat to unlock for a brief moment. The timer used for this power-up mode is also a meter for any cool special move Flynn can do. Want to switch up combat with a powerful swing that knocks enemies in the air or bounce off them with a pogo-sword? Well that'll costs time for Flynn's power-up mode that the player has to grind the timer back to full to use it. It just seems unnecessarily restrictive.

The platforming is basic. Nothing really nips at at the player's heels or lights a fire under their butt. The stages just laid out to hop every few seconds to circumvent pits or climb higher. Since the stages are so dull and simple the exploration feels like a chore. Nothing makes the player seek out corners or try different things because any secret seems juuust out of sight with enough hint that something special is around.

Finally there isn't much of interest with the narrative. Flynn is a silent protagonist and so offers nothing when everyone says, "Wow, your parents were awesome, I'm sure you got this."

Flynn: Son of Crimson has an identity crsis. The store page shows a cool kinetic action-adventure game with an awesome dog. The real game is like walking and fighting in a bog and your dog is home sick. There are far better choices from the absolute deluge of decent to great action-adventure platforming games available.

Oh yeah and no dog combat. I played for four hours and no dog combat! By the looks of things it'll be a few more hours before a player gets the dog. Annnd its for limited areas. Disappointed.

I was really excited for this for a long time, and I just feel kind of disappointed. The gameplay was originally sold as a metroidvania, and they say it has some elements, though I don't see it. I was hoping for a large open map or at least some exploration. The gameplay is pretty generic and boring unfortunately. I'll go ahead an beat this, but I am pretty unimpressed. It kind of falls into the Owl Boy category, where the game is strikingly beautiful and the music owns, but the gameplay is just so incredibly dull and lackluster that it's a struggle to play for more than 15 minutes at a time.

Beautiful game, great soundtrack, casual side scrolling. Only downside is, the game has many levels using dark mechanic, can barely see even if you torch yourself.

It's okay
It has really quite nice looking art, with fluid animations and good responsiveness. It never felt like I missed a jump or an enemy due to a fault of the game. The enemies are quite distinguishable and telegraph rather fairly. The economy (gems earned vs spent) seems pretty well balanced. You only lose a little when you die, and playing the game enough to get all relics and do all stages was enough to almost fully upgrade the tree, which is actually pretty impressive balancing!

There were a few downsides though. The story is quite generic, and doesn't have a lot of humor or deep lore to carry it either. The trailer looks pretty fast paced, but only 1 weapon has a swift attack speed, and it's the last one you unlock. The combos also look fast, but they can take a couple hours to even get to unlock, and only have strong combos in the air or when enemies are stunned. As a result, a lot of the game feels slower than I expected.

The cool ultimate ability you get doesn't have great balance either. It works based off the same bar as your specials, so sometimes you end up holding off on doing the cooler weapon combos so that you can build meter or in the off chance that you want to burst down a group of stronger enemies. Meanwhile, in boss fights, it completely shreds them (Like 50% of their health in a burst) and you don't lose it on death. So even if you don't "learn" the boss, you can just kind of brute force through all of them except the very last boss.

In summary, it's okay. It doesn't do anything special, but I enjoyed it enough to finish it. It didn't have any bugs for me, and the gameplay is well designed, looks nice, and plays well. Just might not be what you expect and may seem a little unbalanced at times.

A casual 2D platforming adventure, fit for kicking back and relaxing.

Pros
-Graphics are great
-Sounds and music is good
-Pacing is great (new mechanics)
-Responsive controls
-Variety in weapons and powers and ample reason for them to be used
-Variety in gameplay (baseline platforming and brawling, water world, sidescroller, bosses etc)
-Possibly the first game in which I didn’t hate the water part
-Variety in bossfights

Cons
-Ladders’, roll-/edge-jumping and wall-jump interaction slightly finicky
-Weapon damage feels slightly under toned resulting in longer than welcome trash mob fights. This is later less of any issue thanks to passive dmg boost unlocks, but those aren’t obvious to find either sadly
-Lack of variety in run of the mill minions

It doesn’t have any outstanding bossfights, but they’re all fun. It doesn’t reinvent the platformer genre, but it offers a taste of most of what’s been seen so far on the market –baseline platforming, some brawling, underwater parts, sidescrolling parts and so on. Many will call this mediocrity and you know what? Maybe rightfully so even, I don’t see Flynn taking home piles of game of the year awards at the end of 2021 either. At the same time however, I also don’t think every single title has to always reinvent the wheel. Right about now the casual outlet that Flynn offered was perfect to just lay back in the chair for with a controller and relax. If you’re looking for anything similar, I’m more than happy to recommend giving this title a chance.

I won't go in too deep on this one as there's not much to talk about. Your parents died in a war to prevent another world from taking over, and now you and your loyal canine protector, Dex, to put as stop to it. However, one of Zealock's minions have been tasked to slow you down so the takeover can be completed. In doing so, she steal's Dex's four power shards, and there's nothing you can do to stop the invasion until you reclaim them.

It's a pretty simple story backing up the title, but more does get revealed as you reach the end. The game is a visual masterpiece with a couple different areas having wildly different climate effects (including the old Ninja Gaiden fight against the wind trope that is still irritating today haha) that sometimes rely on you and the magic powers you gain. Some stages are dqark and you need to light the area, others require you to freeze blocks of water to continue.

To be honest, it took a bit to get into the game. While Flynn: Son of Crimson isn't boring, it seems to plod along at the very start. Once you get better crimson weapons, upgrades, and unlock Dex as a character things start to pick up. I just wish there was more of the canine protector as those areas were the most fun. Bitch slapping a goblin off a ledge will never get old :D.

Overall, Flynn: Son of Crimson is a good game. Sadly, it does move slow, and at some points early on I felt like I was forcing myself to finish it. When it picked up, though? I had as hard time putting the controller down. If this game had come out back in the SNES and Genesis era, it definitely would be heralded as a must own. Even today I do suggest it for fans of retro gaming and just solid built games alike. Just know you gotta put some time in, and definitely farm the crystal gems for those upgrades!

The gameplay was disappointing. It's super liinear. Easy. Short. Combat is slow and boring. And to top it off, the controls are clunky, especially getting on ladders. No coyote time on jumps, etc. I'd recommend this game to young children, but not avid gamers. It's not a bad game. It's just... not good.

Complaints aside, I love the pixel art, and Dex is the goodest girl.

Shroomaster
Shroomaster

classic action adventure game, it is in the style of DK or kirby where you enter an area and all the levels are in the same theme, and not like megaman/shovel knight style where every stage has a theme and a boss.

+ nice visuals
+ nice music
+ good vareity of enemies and bosses
+ fun combat system

- I wish the level design were better, it needed some mini games or something to break the repetitiveness in every area. all the stages inside the areas are similar, it needed something like DK minecart levels or something like that

-\+ very basic story, if you come to this game expecting anything in this area you will be disappointed

Edit:
Wanted to elaborate on my review.

In my time playing through the game I found that the story was not engaging at all. Not only is it generic, but you don't get any hint of what's happening until 5 or so hours in. Very bare-bones. Along with this, the story that is there is all the over the place. The pacing is SO slow. Nothing about the story keeps you hooked. There are several subplots happening in game and none of them merge well. It feels disjointed. On top of this, world never feels as if you're in danger nor does your quests have any urgency to them.

You also don't get anything more than a 2-3 hit combo, a fireball and dodge for 3 hours in game. Until that point, there is no skill list(empty menu), so you don't have anything to work towards. With this being the case, the combat in the early game is extremely bland. It nearly put me to sleep WHILE playing the game. I trudged through hoping it would either explore a great story later or that the combat would open up more. Neither of those happened to an extent to where it was engaging.

The combat that is there feels half-hearted. There are no real animation cancels besides the dodge roll that you can loop with the combos. However, if you wanted to jump mid-combo to get a mob, for instance, there is no way to do so. The combo animation has to complete before you can jump. This doesn't seem too bad, until you get to levels that have pits or hazards you have to avoid and you can't jump because you're still locked in an animation. You do have a meter in which the game feels very fluid and actiony, however it takes years to fill that meter and it's shared with your other cool attacks. IMO, these cool attacks should have been implemented as a combo finisher that DOES NOT take up a meter so as to add more variety to your combat. Alternatively, the meter could just not take 10 centuries to fill up
only to do one power move against 1 or 2 enemies.

Finally, although the steam page seems as if the dog is a major part of battle, you don't get the dog until way later, and she is not a constant companion. You have to call her at certain statues and get to use her for that part of the stage. These statues are limited to certain levels, meaning most levels you cannot interact with the dog. Additionally, dog combat is also very basic - another 3 hit combo and a dash attack. Considering how the story portrays this dog, one would think she would do a bit more than that. This isn't even the worse part, as sometimes you have to dismount the dog to do basic things that could've been programmed with you on the dog? Example, pushing or pulling objects forces you to dismount your pet. Another is that you cannot use your super meter while on the dog either...

Due to these issues, I ended up not finishing the game, and thus cannot recommend it. It is a GORGEOUS game though. The pixel art is phenomenal and is the major reason I impulsively bought the game. It's a shame the gameplay didn't match the polish of the artwork.

Original Review:

Beautiful game ruined by EXTREMELY slow pacing, a haphazard story, and a lack of urgency or purpose.
Gameplay is pretty responsive, but there are some actions that don't have animation cancel(main combo you can roll out of, but can't jump out of for instance). It feels as if the game loses focus on what it want's to be with several different gimmicks. The last straw for me personally was not being able to work towards anything for the first few hours in the game, and being stuck with my basic combo that entire time.

not great, not bad either, just ok. The pixel art is fantastic, the combat is fun but very repetitive. and the story is super generic. finished the story in around 4 hours at 80% completion.

Not bad for a seemingly typical pixel sprite adventure. A little on the simple side of things but with only a few hours into the game I can't really give a full measure of the experience. What I can say so far is that the combat is OK, the enemy variety is limited, the skill tree seems dated by today's standards while platforming, puzzles and game art is pretty decent. Recon you'd be interested?

I remember seeing gif's of this game on twitter sometime ago and since then been keeping close eye on it.
Now is on steam and I'm happy that it released!
The artwork was the thing that catch my eye right away. It's cute and nicely done.
Soundtrack is fine, it does the job nicely as well.
Controls are very responsive. The one thing that bothered me was that to grab a ladder in mid air was a bit harder than it should. Maybe it was just me but I felt like I had to line the character to it and then press UP. Luckly there isn't that many that you need to do that sort of thing. Other than that everything else felt nice.
Really liked the combos you could learn just kinda sad that I couldn't really use them more often and I loved that you could be an almost unstoppable force for a few seconds. I wish you could have used Dex a bit more also...
Personally the game does not deserve a bad review at all, I guess it could have been a bit more. The 19.99 price seems a bit over the game has to offer so I don't blame anyone who buys the game on a decent sale.
I had an enjoyable experience. If you are looking for a "standard video game" to play, maybe consider putting this boy on your wishlist.

A lovely pixel graphic adventure!

Everything feels pretty good about Flynn son of crimson. Music, casual puzzles & nice challenges.
Finding all the treasures is also quite the task!
I don't really have anything negative to say about the game. It's a well balanced game.
I did my playthrough on hard difficulty and i didn't think it was that challenging. I wonder what is different about a normal playthrough!

Studio Thunderhorse, i will now follow upcoming games by you! Great work!

I do recommend the game for anyone and even more if you like the genre :)

Honestly its a good little platformer it took about 10 hours to get all the achievements and I had fun with the game with all but 2 things.
1) the wall jump is super finnicky but the the devs said they will be making it work better in future updates.
2) I really hate that after you complete a certain amount of stages you are locked from progression until you "clear the scourge" which is going back to an old stage and reclearing it but its more difficult. I think that having these stages lock you from all other stages just kinda sucks. Its not fun and is honestly the only real blemish in this otherwise fun game.

I want to recommend this game, because for the length of a single playthrough and it's price point it looks like its a worthwhile buy. Buuuut, I honestly cannot recommend it. I recall how hyped the game looked during its development and it looked like it was gonna be badass, but it turned out to be a Super Mario world clone with hack and slash combat. Once again the silent protagonist thing ruin character development for me and there are SOOOOOOO many plot holes. Maybe its just my level of expectations after playing through Eastward but...

yea I wouldn't play through this again. It's a close-but-no-cigar thing, I guess.

I played this game through to completion on Game Pass and had a great time doing it, so I bought a copy at full price to directly support the devs for their effort. All-in-all a very enjoyable action-platformer packed with lovely art and solid gameplay. I'm looking forward to seeing what Studio Thunderhorse makes next!

PROS
---
Gorgeous art; love the aesthetic.
Appreciate the tight controls.
The soundtrack is quite good.

CONS
---
The story and character dialogue seem cursory.
It feels quite generic at times because of that.

CONCLUSION

A lovely world to exist in for a while.

Buen juego. Bastante variado y algunos y todos los enemigos son como puzzles (recomiendo golpear y rápidamente esquivar hacia un lado). Lo único que no me gusto mucho, es lo largo que son la mayoría de los niveles (a veces se vuelve tedioso).

Short game but worth to play.
Played the game on Hard from the start, since i play quite a lot of this genre.
Cool Art, Beautiful OST, Gameplay is simple but fun.
Boss fights were pretty decent aswell.
Overall I would rate the game 9 out of 10.

I've been following the studio's Twitter since who knows how long. The game was in the works for years, and it only came out now. There was one early alpha or beta stage playtest where I participated. I had a problem with that because of massive slowdowns on my end due to having a low end laptop.

Even now, with the full release of the game, the slowdowns are still present from time to time. However, it's less apparent, especially when I run it at a lower resolution. The game is otherwise really smooth for most part.

But that's just scratching the surface. Playing into it even just for a couple of stages made me fall in love. Despite being in development for many years, this game is the definition of being well worth the wait. The stages are exceptionally well-designed. The soundtrack is beautiful. The animations are fluid and amazing. And I'm just talking about the few 6 or 7 stages, as I haven't even played the whole game yet.

It's a beautiful game, and I would definitely recommend people buying it.

On my first impressions, I've loved the game.
It's music, character design and artstyle is incredible and that was my selling point.

However, after playing it once, it took a while for me to get back to it, and that confused myself too.
So I went writing down some other impressions that I had while playing:

- The game has a huge focus on combat, though most enemies don't do contact damage, so they're not much of an obstacle to just roll past them. You might as well just skip combat for the necessary parts.
- despite the complex combat abilities, fighting the enemies themselves is rather straightforward, there's rarely an enemy that forces you to use a different attack once, and after that, you can stunlock it to it's defeat.
So like: You have 3 weapons, with each having 4 different ways to do a special attack, consuming a part of the special meter. but you can also just stick to the default combo and save those special attacks for "when you really need it", but pretty much every enemy can be defeated with the default combo, so there's little need on those.
- The game also has a huge focus on collecting crimson gems, you see gems everywhere, destroying crystals gives you gems, defeating enemies gives you gems, losing gems is the motivation to not die, so you can probably do a lot with them, right?
Well, there is a combat tech tree, which is awesome, but that's the only thing where you can spend all your gems on, and despite the many options, the combat upgrades aren't that necessary to have either.
- There is little to no reason to go for collectables, as those only offer more gems, which you can already earn in any level.
- The story is straightforward and kinda generic, and that lowered the expectations a bit.
- The level are strictly linear, even the "multiple paths" only lead to either optional combat areas, or visited later for story progression.
- The level design and puzzles are all basic stuff you've seen before, maybe I could've expected that some crimson powers blend with the level design, other than 'equip the axe to destroy one specific wall'.
There's also past obstacles that still require you to solve the puzzle even though you have equipment obtained later that should break through.
For example: There is a breakable ice wall, and you have an axe that can destroy crystal walls, or even a fire spell that deals extra damage to ice enemies, both are obtained after all ice levels, so it would've been useful if these could break down ice walls to lessen backtracking and improve possibilities, but they don't. Both weapons are strictly limited to one certain interaction.
There were elemental ranged attacks that blend well with the combat and level design, I think it would've been cool if these elemental attacks blended with the melee weapons too.

Eventually I went playing it until the end and I do have enjoyed it.
As said, the music, artstyle and character design caught my interest, the boss fights were great too, and I loved the fights against Rozia, that was enough for me to keep going until the end.
But...should I recommend it even though with all other thoughts in mind?
It's on an shuffling edge, really, but I've said more about the parts that can be improved than the game itself.

But for now, I'll give it a negative one.
The game is okay for a simple adventure, but with such an arsenal of abilities, I was also expecting you'll be able to do more.
I see that this game's still getting updates, and 1.1 was a decent update, so I'm having good hopes for it to be improved further.

This game feels like I'm playing Donkey Kong Country all over again. The secrets are well placed and make you actively have to look for them while at the same time not punishing players if they cannot be found. (The last one is highly tricky even!)

Story wise isn't the greatest, but gameplay makes up for it. Not only that but the controls are quite easy to pick up and play through this action/adventure/platformer.

Man what a bare bone 2D adventure game. I was expecting something like Shovel Knight style with some interesting story but all i got was orphan taken in by family, orphan has powers and playing 1 hour of just a really boring 2D game. Sucks because the pixel graphics looks amazing.

nightblitz42

I thought the sprites and animation looked nice so I gave the game a try. I was not disappointed by the visual presentation; it is a very clean-looking game full of sharp, colorful art. Unfortunately, the gameplay feels a bit unfulfilling. It's a well-built game, certainly playable, and the animation is great, but the movement and combat mechanics feel sluggish and uninspired. The enemy behavior is pretty boring too.

Maybe the game gets more interesting over time, but the other reviews don't give me hope. And even if it does get more interesting, its dull first hour is still a mark against it. This game has polish, flair, and consistency, but it desperately needs a hook -- some unique mechanic or gimmick to make the game stand out.

Great game! But unfortunately It feels like a bit of wasted potential.

Overall the plot is Linear and predictable, and the player's progression is even more so. No optional content, No post game and no alternate endings means you're done with the game the moment the credits roll. I really think this game could become something special if the devs added more content post launch.

Here are a few humble suggestions If they end up reading this:

*Side quests at each of the towns would help give the player more to accomplish throughout their journey as opposed to simply reaching the end.
*Challenging optional levels and more uses for collectables would give the player something to do post-game.
*Additional story/endings would be really great! as it stands the plot is kinda bare bones at the moment.
*Lastly this game introduces a plethora of unique characters but insists on having them serve little to no purpose. let me learn more about the people of Rosantica!

Frankie Spankie
Frankie Spankie

This is basically an action platformer where you control a kid that gets different weapons and magic. There's really no puzzle solving, it's more exploration at times but even most of the time it's just really straight forward. The game play is pretty tight and the boss battles are fun but the enemy variety is lacking and levels can drag a bit. The game's still enjoyable but I think this is a case where less can be more. I feel like it would gain a point or so if the levels felt a bit more engaging but it's still worth a play through IMO if you're looking for a platformer that is more action focused.

Update after beating the game:
You should definitely play on hard mode. This is due the fact that your abilities are way to strong and made me able to beat some bosses on the first try, even tho i'm just average in platformers. I'm quite sure that i would have been able to rush through the game in the default difficulty setting.

Monochrome

Flynn: SoC is a cool throwback to old school GBA platformers. It keeps adding new enemies and hazards right up until the end, has obligatory one time only mechanics and a cute beautifully rendered game map. It doesn't take long to 100% too, if you're into that!!

Even though I recommend the game and think it's great, some design decisions are weird. Most multiple exit levels consist of actually, just one exit, then a single additional end screen as a second exit, and while there are seemingly "side-quests" most are unmissable. It evokes that Super Mario World / GBA Kirby games feeling of an open map, without the reality of the open map: If you want to miss the additional content, you actually gotta put effort into evading it.

That being said, the game delivers great and simple gameplay that you just can't get tired of! It gets fresher too often and too fast for that. In that sense, it never stops being fun. There's a lot of additional skills for combos that you don't need for anything... But the animations are super flashy and cool!! It really does pile on, one cool thing on another, to make a constantly refreshing experience.

TL;DR: Some designs are flat unused or weirdly implemented, but the game is sweet and fun enough they don't muddle the overall experience at all. Fully recommended!!

I really wanted to like this game. It was very impressive looking in the trailers. But the level designs and overall feel just isn't as good as you would expect. Even simple platformers like Magicat do a good job at keeping the fun and interest alive, for some reason Flynn just misses the mark. I was going back to this game day after day just to beat it, instead of enjoying it.

Sort of lacks personality I guess.

KingOfAcesX
KingOfAcesX

Im usually really into these kinds of games but I just found the overall experience too slow. between the slow platforming and the somewhat "on rails" comboing it doesnt give much to keep me entertained.

I went in expecting more open combat sorta like DMC and some others, but most moves are only acccessible if you used the previous entering move, and arnt interchangable with other weapons mid combo at all.

platforming wasnt very engaging and consisted of a bit too much waiting around for platform cycles and such

Highly recommend this game. Great little 2d action adventure game. Mixes up some aspects of your favorite SNES games into a unique package.

The graphics and animation are really stellar and what makes this game so great. The combat overall is pretty easy but enjoyable. I feel like it's a great gateway combat system for younger players to learn before tackling harder games. As an old fart, it was never challenging, but fun nonetheless.

Story is simple enough, but fits right in with the SNES look and felt like a game I would have loved as a kid. I played the game while stuck in a hotel room while getting cancer treatment for my dog, so parts of the story with the pupper hit me more than it probably would have otherwise.

The only negative I have of the game is the artwork for the title screen and the in game storyline cut scenes. I don't understand how a game that clearly has a mastery of the pixel art look can create such awful looking cut scenes and title art. They look like they were made on paint with a mouse. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but just puzzling in light of how great and polished the rest of the game is.

Took me 10 hours to beat the game and get all the collectables. Will definitely play the game again in hero mode as I greatly enjoyed this game!

Came for the graphics, stayed for the graphics.
Beautiful pixel art, but a bit too slow on overall pacing in everything, be it platforming or combat.
Definitely great for people getting into platforming games for the first time though.

Wulf

Combat is simple, boring, and repetitive. There's also no incentive to fight things, so it's better to just run past them, even if you'll end up taking damage. You can just heal the damage back at any time by spending a form of mana. You can replenish mana by attacking mana crystals, which are quite abundant.

There are no puzzles. Exploring outside the default path only gets you the currency to unlock combat skills. So little of the currency drops outside of beating a level or finding an item that you have to bring to a person in town to essentially sell, that it's not worth attacking the currency shards to get the currency from them.

The mounted combat on the dog is featured first thing in the trailer and in the first gameplay gif in the "About this game" section on the store page. Mounted combat on the dog does not happen for a long time into the game.

What was once thought to be a metroidvania ended up being an ordinary action platformer. It does however have a few elements of metroidvanias. In this sense it is comparable to the 4th shantae game, the one that was funded by a kickstarter. It is notable for having orchestral music that exceeds the quality of everything else in this game. Although it would have been more enjoyable as a metroidvania, this platformer is nonetheless enjoyable enough and it gets better with time.

I didn't play this game for very long, but the entire time I was playing I kept telling myself, "it gets better, just wait a little bit longer" and maybe it does, but from what I've played I would highly advise to buy something better. Why? the combat is just boring and the puzzles are just "pull this lever and the door opens" (honestly there are better reviews to why the game is bad and I would recommend looking at them too)
