I highly recommend this game. I love the sounds, animations and just the overall gameplay. If you get the chance, then buy it!!!

Game is full of glitched achievements, getting the last few achievements is very grindy (if they aren't bugged), once you beat the dungeons and complete all the puzzles the screen will just be exploding with items and crafting stations that make horrible noises every time something is crafted. The more you progress, the less you will want to play the game because your base will be so unpleasant to be around. I have to play the game without sound, and even then all the stuff on screen and the visual effects/shaking are too annoying. Game still feels like it was never optimized, completed, or checked for bugs all these years later. Not being able to get achievements that you've clearly earned is very unsatisfactory, especially in a game that has no story to progress through.

This game is perfect for anyone who wants a crafting/resource-collecting type game, but at a faster pace than that type of game normally is. You can build a ton of things super quickly and without too much thought, which makes this game super addicting and satisfying.

You can reach the endgame rather quickly, but its burns super bright on its way there. I really enjoyed it.

When i bought it a long time ago, i think it's decent, i kinda liked playing it, until this year i heard about what happened, the game's decent, can't really say the same for the lead developer though, wish i could've refunded it sooner, but it's been a while now, the game's not even supported or updated anymore, multiplayer's never going to be here, not anytime soon.

if it never happened, woulda been a different story.

I spent so fucking long trying to beat this game and now I got a beard. Fuck yeah. 103/103 for how many achievements I've done. 9/10 game -1 for the intense bank grinding.

really fun game though, sad to see it die

Pretty buggy. A great concept with a lot of flaws. Very sad to see it was abandoned. Playing it would be so much more fun if it weren't for things like not being able to place land next to a tree because of how the cursor prioritizes selections (on controller, anyway). Just seems like so much love went into it at first, and now it's just.... dead.

This game is so easily addicting and so enjoyable. The grinding aspect of this game feels perfect and doesn't make me feel I am working to hard or have to grind SO much for something that I want to accomplish. It's perfectly paced and so nice to let my mind go and zone out and play!

Forager is a pretty grindy game and because it's grindy, the end game for Forager was very unrewarding. The end game content is lackluster. Outside of that, for me, it was a good 35 hours of fun. Even though I'm heavily critical of the end game content, I enjoyed Forager and would recommend playing it.

feltz
feltz

What the hell. The game is fun and all but what's up with the frame rate? Why does this pixel game lags so much? I go from 60 fps to 20-30 fps out of nowhere for some reason. Guess it's just poorly optimized lol. I still recommend it, however, I'm refunding it since it's barely playable for me.

Pheonix Fontaine
Pheonix Fontaine

I would say, overall I wouldn't suggest this game to people unless they're looking for a specific experience.

I liked the upgrades for the skilltree and a lot of the leveling shortcuts mitigate getting to experience it, but the upgrade system for your gear features a lot of annoying redundancy in a few specific places. It's comfortable gameplay, but lacks a certain diversity. The weapons and even your pickaxe get quite irrelevant when you've acquired any of the wands and their especially their upgrades.

What I didn't like was how often the game turned into an idle sim. Always resources to gather and something to do, but often waiting for a machine to finish is what holds you up. I would say at least 30 of my hours were leaving the computer to just run whatever. Then near endgame the relevance to some things was pointless, specifically with how awful the nuclear stuff is, making buildings stop working because you needed batteries. Several other issues with the nuclear stuff also exist, making it a very disconnected game element having been added on last.

I would say play another base-building sim for a good bit of the content this game has to offer, but this might be up your alley and worth it if it's on sale.

Mortiseraphim
Mortiseraphim

Very fun and addicting little game. Good progression from simple manual farming etc. to full automation. The game doesn't hold your hand and lets you figure things out on your own. Some of the puzzles are frustrating as there are zero hints on how to do them would be my only complaint.

I recommend this game to players who dont mind not getting updates, as this game has been quit for the forseeable future. I think it is a fun game none the less.

Let's get this out of the way: the game is fun, specially during the early parts, and it has charm and some references. It can get really slow at the endgame, but still, a fun experience (sometimes frustrated by bugs)

However, I'm making a negative review for a couple of reasons:

-The game has pretty much been abandoned, even though some updates were planned. It still has a lot of bugs, some of which are pretty annoying and even game breaking. Multiplayer update? Yeah, that's never coming despite being hyped up. Nothing else is coming.

-The dev is an asshole, there is no other way to put it. When the game just came out he was spamming his game everywhere to the point of being annoying. I understand being enthusiastic about your project, but it was too much, "Forager is the best game ever!", "I love my game, buy it!", "My favourite videogame is the one I created!", and such.

But that's not the worst part, he mistreated his employees and supporters: blamed everyone except himself, got uppity about any criticisms and banned you from Discord or Steam's discussion board, threw his employees under the bus when things got bad, he also underpaid them, wanted to claim he was a "solo dev" and the list goes on.

You can search for yourself if you want to know. The dev eventually went back a few steps and claimed he was to blame, but it looked more like a PR move than anything sincere.

I regret paying for this game, I wish I would've pirated it; not for the sake of playing it, but just to spite this pretentious asshole.

Pirate it, you'll probably enjoy it for a while.

The game is really nice. Cosy gameplay like Stardew Valley.

Finished my first playthrough (21h) on the latest Linux native client (v2.0.4)
Playing right now on the latest Windows client (v4.1.9) on Proton 7.0-4 out of the box. (Proton experimental gives me some errors). There is so much Quality Of Life updates and new features from v3 and v4.
Looking forward to Void and Nuclear!

The developer is a POS. He promises a MP update to the game and 2 years later still hasn't done it only to be confirmed that he stopped working on the game and cussed out his team out from developing.

Do not support this game, do not buy it, if you think you want to play it you don't. It is horrible and boring gameplay anyways.

This game is a blight upon my life and continues to be, in fact, as I'm still trying to get the last 3 achievements (billionaire, trillionaire, completionist). The thing that'll most likely draw people away from playing this for very long would be the fact it's grindy to the point of being tedious. It's a slow climb, almost akin to Sisyphus's punishment with how long it seems to drag on, but it's got its charms. My main genre of games that I'm decently good at tend to be simplistic ones like these, since I just like having something to keep me busy in between everything else I do with my time--so it's completely fair to say the gameplay's lacking. Either way, I think it's an alright way to pass the time.

"Forager" is a very fun game and is very addicting, and after getting a feat / achievement completed it is super satisfying. The further into the game you get the more complex and fun it gets. Its a huge game that has a ton of play time and is totally worth the money. If your struggling to decide which game you should get that is currently in your wish list and or just a game that you want to play. Get this one and enjoy playing and getting all the achievements as you play :)

I really do wanna give this game a thumbs up for it being a good fun game to sit back and play, but the fact that the developer abandoned this game and the community makes me not want to recommend this game to any newcomers. Don't get me wrong the game can be fun but there's some severe bugs that you may encounter if you are unlucky. Unless you are fine with the game not receiving any updates or bug fixes I wouldn't recommend playing this game fr.

Emperor Goat
Emperor Goat

As others have mentioned. This game's got some severe bugs, which the unlucky few can encounter. It was also abandoned by the developer, whom I'm pretty sure were doing some shady stuff towards his employees. The game itself is fun and charming, but I can't recommend something that is buggy and abandoned.

Its really fun to play. Once you unlock the Zeus's lightning it becomes easier to farm if you don't have rods. I'm addicted, so my review will be biased. It's like a 2D Minecraft. The beginning is painfully slow, but it always feels fast whenever I go away and come back to the beginning after a long time away. The middle is amazing and I have yet to reach the end. I'm somewhere post-middle and the game feels sluggishly slow. I need the Obliterator SO BAD and I STILL can't get enough sand for unlimited Landfillworks, which saddens me immensely. I HATE THE SHADOWMAZE ALTAR! WHY IS IT EVEN THERE!?

//Hakej

The game is very fun for a one time playthrough but has completely 0 replayability. Full price is fair, if you get it on a discount I'd say it's a great deal. I've put over 30h in it and was able to complete all the achievements and had a ton of fun throughout 75% of my playtime. The other 25% was kinda dragging for me because few achievements are just a complete crazy grindfest and I had to fight a lot as well at the end to progress, which in my opinion is the worst part in this game.

The whole concept of progressing through foraging and crafting things sorely is such a good concept that it buffles me why the developer felt a need to add battle to this game, it is really dull, basic and boring. At first it felt like a cute little filling that gave you some necessary materials to some of the crafts by fighting few slimes here and there, but endgame boils down to going into "roguelite" space called Void and fighting the same enemies in basically the same place over and over again and doing breaks in between so your fully automated base can keep up with the craft after you bring material. Hands down the worst part of this game. Endgame is bad because it's repetetive and against most of the principles this game tried to strive for throughout the rest of the gameplay. The endgame is so boring that I'm literally writing this review while finishing up the game because I need to wait for the stuff to finish, thankfully one mod makes it easier for me.

The other bad thing are puzzles for very similar reasons where for the most part the whole foraging and crafting concept is gone and you're now forced to play Zelda copy, which again - is boring because fighting in this game is really bad. The other puzzles are logical puzzles, some of them are fun, some of them are straight out insane i.e. here's an obscure & "philosophical" description of an item that you need to bring to get a reward in a game with literally thousands of items. I really have no idea if someone was able to finish these puzzles legitamely, I'm confident people just brute forced this stuff and the rest of us just checked the wiki.

Last bad thing I've got to say about this game is some design decisions & bugs. I don't understand how developer thought to himself "hmm that would be a good decision to have random huge sprites as droids" and then when you have 50 droids in the endgame you have basically whole screen covered in random sprites and names which makes the game unplayable without a mod hiding them. Or a friend perk which also randomizes a sprite that will get in your way. Some perks don't work all the time like banks making 50% more money when next to another bank, I got stuck a couple of times here & there, condition detection is really weird and you have to restart the save to make some things count, fishing is irrelevant, inventory is buggy (especially the "USE" button which will often randomly change focus to another item for no real reason when using it) and UI could use some work. There's a bunch of weird features like camera shake on every single action you take but fortunately there's an option to turn them off. Also camera panning is "floaty" which will make you miss way more often than you might think. If you think aiming with the cursor feels clunky, consider turning this off and compensate with a zoom out - much better experience.

The whole progress from the beginning towards the endgame felt amazing though and I wasn't hooked on a game like this for a long time where hours just went by because there was always something to do, something to discover, something to upgrade. It's a real shame that endgame is so bad because even though I'm very positive about the game overall it finishes on this very low note that it makes me sad I have to write a pretty negative review. It gets a positive rating nonetheless, because majority of my time was spent having a ton of fun, I just wish the developer spent the time he spent on the Void and battle mechanics on more foraging and crafting or maybe some replayability instead, then I'd have no issues fully recommending the game. If I had any tips for the developer when making a possible Forager 2 then I'd say completely forget what you did with the endgame and focus what works in the beginning & mid game and what brings out that "progression" feeling the most, because trust me it wasn't the puzzles nor the battle mechanisms. The replayability potential seems to be here but is not expanded upon whatsoever.

This game is so fun to mess around with. The progression is fun and surprising, at first you are getting a bone sword and then you getting sent to a other dimension, or you start fighting demons. This game has some amazing potential for people who like grinding or just like having fun maxing out your game so much that it crashes on you. Recommend if you have not played before

Forager is like a fast-paced super cute Minecraft. The characters and little quests are adorable. The bosses and livestock and characters are all so cutesy. The combat is super fun; it gets to a point where there's so much going on, you can't really see the screen. You can get drones to aid you in battle and I really don't know how much I ended up accumulating but jesus. . . a lot of those drones are cute Easter eggs, too.

Game runs in slow motion and is locked to 30fps for some reason. Apparently this is a common issue. I tried some of the fixes out there but they didn't seem to work. Considering the reputation of this dev and how long this issue has been known for, I would just look for a different game to play.

First off, the ui and sound design is great, it's very smooth and the visuals are charming. At first the game is really fun, but after you buy all the land you can, it becomes really grindy and boring, the later half of the game feels really unfinished, which it probably is, considering it has been abandoned.

I have 72 hours on record, most of which is probably just having it running in the background as a bunch of machines are running, honestly I wished this game was finished, it had great potential, but a bad creator brought it down.

You should spend the 20$ somewhere else, or at least wait until it's on sale if you really want to play it

No longer updated, some drama about dev kicking someone off the team for being trans. Do not get this game only reason it is alive is due to mods. the 2020 roadmap is still in the game even though it's 2022 now, and multiplayer still hasn't been implemented and will never be.

Lovely game that I played a bit back when it launched. Waited patiently for extra content and didn't jump on every new update.

Fast forward to 2022 when I installed it and thought it would be cool to play it again with all the new additions, but alas, my monitor is 144Hz. Game absolutely does not work on anything past 60Hz. Now, I'm aware that I can just lower the refresh rate of my monitor, but the thing is that I shouldn't have to.

Seeing as this is a finished game and updates ended in 2020, I have no faith that this will ever be fixed and I honestly can't recommend it.

I LOVE grindfests. It can get a bit boring if you play 6+ hours every day buuuuut that's on me.
The graphics are cute, challenges can be a bit hard (which is good).
My only issue is that building a base isn't necessary, you can do the game without building a base.

Example of game: Was playing it, boyfriend called me and told me he got into a car accident, I left the game open in a frantic whirlwind, I came back a few hours later and had built up a shit ton of gold in the banks. Win/loss (his car got totaled, he's fine tho) for me (?)

A vapid game. There are many games out there which can be played passively, however, Forager manages to leave you feeling empty after playing it for hours and hours, its aesthetic is as shallow as Disney mascots, and its gameplay is skinnerbox patronizing garbage equivalent to jangling keys in front of a baby. This game is interesting, even a bit fun but I can't recommend it. It has so many bugs that aren't fixed. I mean, this was released in 2019 and there are still so many game breaking bugs like the pick ax not swing or the rolling animation starting up when you first log in. You shouldn't still have to be doing stupid freakin' things like toggle full screen and out of full screen to get the game to run properly after like 4 years. You literally cannot use a control, at least not on PC, with this game. It's so buggy. I actually bought a new controller, because everyone said the bugs are because your control is bad, and I got the same basic bugs 10 minutes into the game with a new control.

cjriches

Failed to grab me. The first hour was a complete grind-fest, just whack-a-mole-ing resources as they spawned in and waiting to have enough to craft the next item. I was hoping for more automation, but every stage of mining and crafting is manual and painfully slow. From reading other reviews, there is some limited automation, but it comes online late in the game and is fairly underwhelming.

I eventually got stuck with nothing to do, as I was limited to just two islands which did not have much to offer me. Purchasing the next island would require waiting literally hours for gold to spawn in so I could make enough coins, as creating a market to sell other resources required leather, which wasn't available on my two islands.

The hunger mechanic is also rather flimsy, and feels like it has no purpose other than irritating the player - mining any resource consumes hunger, which eventually consumes health if it runs out. But how do you get food? By... mining resources. Resources that may or may not randomly spawn, or you can farm them to trivialise it. It's just busywork that serves no gameplay purpose; the game would literally be better if the entire system was cut.

The game is also unfortunately abandoned. Steam news and the in-game roadmap both claim that multiplayer is coming, but this is out-of-date information. You can read other reviews for more details, but from what I've gathered, the developer struggled with the programming, blamed other people, mismanaged and underpaid other staff causing the team to collapse, then removed them all from the credits and claimed it was a solo project, before finally abandoning the game without making any public announcement.

Altogether a rather disappointing waste of potential. Perhaps it gets better if you persist through the early islands, but from my experience I regret even the few quid that I spent on it in the sale.

Still relatively buggy 3 years after release, initially planned for multiplayer and with that i think it'd be worth. But with just singleplayer I feel the gameplay loop just isn't enough to keep me entertained.

Hope of Despair
Hope of Despair

The game seems fun, but progression is painfully slow, I still haven't discovered a way to make it faster to break rocks or trees, so I'm stuck breaking them for much longer (because I need more materials). Also, it would be fitting if the game had any sort of tutorial or introduction, to guide new player. Even more, sometimes you just need some dumb luck so the material you need spawns, so you are stuck until fate smiles upon you, without much more to do than just kill your time on some rocks. I really want to play this game and like it, but my patience has a limit.

The game is very nice at the beginning, you can get hours of entertainment out of it, but as the map expands and you progress through the game, the environment turns into a complete garbage dump due to random materials. Later in the game, you start having trouble cleaning up all the materials despite having more tools. The most troublesome thing to collect is gold. I found myself doing the same things over and over again to get the gold needed to expand the map, and it bored me a lot. There are beautiful puzzles and dungeons in the game, but it felt inadequate, so it can't prevent the monotony of crafting and expanding your base. Unfortunately, I got bored and quit after 10 hours.

One of the best sandbox style games I have played. Super fun with funny dialogue quotes. A good buy to support a small dev. Only thing I wish that was added was Multiplayer. Besides that the replayability is not bad, leaderboards are filled with cheaters though, and the game optimization isnt the best. 8/10 though.

Loved this game back in it's beta, ran amazing on my FX5450 APU3 years ago.
Just bought it for my R7 3700x/GTX 1660S and it can't even get 40FPS in gameplay.
Looked around and it's not my hardware's fault.

DISCLAIMER: This would be a Mixed review if Steam had actually caught up to user feature requests by now. Additionally, I had about 8 hours of playtime before Steam courtesy of it being available in Game Pass & eventually decided to buy it due to how much I'd been enjoying the game.

In a nutshell - Forager is really freaking good if you want a game to kill a few hours with every day when you're winding down. It's simple, it's satisfying, it never asks too much of you, and it rewards your efforts and consistent holding of the left mouse button with plenty of dopamine. It is *especially* good if you're among the growing group of Steam users with hand-held x86 rigs - be that a brand-new Steam Deck, an Aya Neo, the OneXPlayer, GPD Win-series anything, or even just a non-gaming-oriented UMPC like the GPD Pocket 3 or one of the OneMix series devices - it sucks up very little juice & runs fine even on comparatively low-power hardware, so you can sack out wherever you please and shut your brain off for a few hours of Foraging.

That said, I *cannot* in good conscience recommend getting it full-price on account of yikes-inducing behaviour from the arguable lead developer, who ditched a lot of the team and put them through some freaky business practices (for instance, requiring an NDA but not ever providing an actual contract for your work, per YellowAfterlife) for the brief period they were employed - and he has since more or less cancelled the game, privately stating that there would be no future updates, multiplayer was out of the question, etc. It's a darn shame, as this would be fantastic in co-op & there's a lot of potential for future content.

If you're on the fence - consider trying it through XBox Game Pass, though be aware that the game pass version can have some bizzarre bugs with modern PC hardware (and NVidia cards specifically it would seem), and of course that offline play & cross-save are a no-go due to the XBox-on-windows experience as a whole still being janky and in-development. If you dig it, wait for a good sale & grab it - and go wild with mods when you finally run out of stuff to do in the base game.

Might feel a bit overwhelming and too grindy at some points, but the overall experience of the game is fun & relaxing. I recommend it, especially if it's on sale!

I wanna like this title, but it seems unfinished and unoptimized (gets frame drops on a decent pc). Game is fun for the first 5-10 hours. Afterwards it becomes extremely tedious. You spend most of your time during late game waiting around for resources to spawn or your workstations to craft materials.

Dodge_This
Dodge_This

Not enough literal-room to be OCD about, this is a space manager in guise of resource manager - primary focus is not resource its space of placement of building. Because of that it becomes a idle click without the idle part. Wished there was no clipping for the buildings - because once you put few buildings your movement is done. Combine that with the bad RNG on the lands you buy and a long play can turn into a crappy play in no time. Bought at discounted got bored just not my cup of tea. There is content though - I am not sure why some people are complaining that its abandoned - there is lot to do in this game if you like that kind of progression.

It seemed fun and interesting for the first half hour but then it became a grind and farm fest for the materials to further unlock buildings and upgrades. It just feels like an endless loop of foraging and material farming without any much satisfaction even when you hit an upgrade. A little too time consuming for my liking, but hey if you have time to spend, maybe you'll like it.

Really fun game. It doesn't take long to progress through the game. You get to craft and make new structures and get higher tier gear. i will say that when at the begining stages for getting royal steel, it is super slow but its okay. i like the little puzzles that you have to do that i totally didn't look up how to do. its very satisfying sometimes and the bosses are cool. i like this game!

just an all around good game it is also really relaxing so if you are stressed or just want a calming experience then this is the right game to play it is also cheap so it's not like your loosing a whole lot if you buy the game and don't like it that much I think it was around 10 to 20 dollars when I got it.

good game but 20-30% consists of waiting, which is a shame honestly
it's got a good amount of charm with its style, but if you don't like commiting to the grind then maybe skip this one out

Dark Sky Empire
Dark Sky Empire

Forager is one of the best 2D sandbox games. Although it's not a real open world game, but you can do almost anything and have a lot of fun. However, if you have already got all achievements, then there was nothing left to do.

Pros:
+Like other sandbox games, you can gather natural resources, plant crops, feed animals and fishing.
+Build a lot of production buildings. All industrial buildings can upgrade to nuclear facilities.
+Buy new lands and reclaim land from the sea.
+Zelda-style battle system. You will explore four mazes and solve many puzzles.
+Various weapons, tools and accessories. Some of them can be upgraded to nuclear standard.
+Many unique skills. If you can unlock some skills earlier, the game will get easier.

Cons:
-You can't build your own house.
-The mouse pointer is too small to see in a fierce battle. I reached Void level 41, it's a mess!
-I really hate the achievement "Coin Collector". It costs me about five days to finish. This is the most boring achievement, because the only thing to do is minimize the game window and waiting!

I would’ve said it be a good game but when I heard the stuff on the dev’s Blaming everything on they team and other thing to the Original Artist for the game And hard promise to have multiplayer on the game but Secretly cancelled it, I’ll let you think about getting it or not, but I will saying After hearing that, it just disappoints me, don’t recommend. Sorry

(Please note the stuff that come out for what I said, was last year (I’m in 2022) and it’s just took me this long to seeing it)

When I bought this game, I was not expecting to get almost 50 hours of playtime out of it. It's cute and easy enough to pick-up, with steady progression (both gameplay and gear-wise) without feeling like you don't know where to go. Secrets are solvable without having to resort to a wiki, if that's your thing.

The game has its bugs as others have mentioned - you can get 'stuck' in certain places but I was lucky enough to have managed to un-glitch myself without losing my save entirely. It's a pity we are unlikely to have further updates to the game - I was very much looking forward to the Multiplayer update.

Adventure, base-building, even grindy stuff for the sweats.. this game had the potential for multiplayer re-playability with the likes of Terraria, but unfortunately this is as much as we'll ever get to enjoy.

Still, for the fun I got out of it, I find it very worth its price.

It is sad that they discontinued Multiplayer, But this game still is fun for grinding feats/achievements. They also have workshop so if anything gets boring you can install mods. This gives me Stardew Valley vibes but without villagers.
