Oh my Word!

I played this game 18 years ago and I loved how simplistic and strangely alluring the graphics become as you increase in speed.
Today this game revived the same feelings as back then. I love it and captivates me all over again!
Please make more games like this. I sometimes like the quick 'escape' from everyday life that this game provides without having to learn a ton of mechanics and controls which as I get older, sadly have less and less time to master.

Thanks for this gem!

Give this game a minute to warm up and stop trying to "beat" it and you have a good time. The later levels give me a bit of the feeling that mirror's edge can. If you can get this game on sale, I would go for it. (As nice as it is, its not a $17 dollar game.)

The game has the player run, jump and dive to the next platform. The main focus is speed, since the longer the player spends running on platforms, the faster they become. The only way to fail is to fall into the endless pit, so hitting a platform only brings the player to a halt instead of destroying the run. The levels are basic, but visually appealing for what it's worth, going after the vector display style.

The game is more basic than meets the eye, too basic for my taste, but the price is almost right.

It's pretty short unless you feel skilled enough to get all achievements.

Cheap and fun.
Challenging as well as easy.
If you like arcade-style games, get it.
I'll give it an 8/10, not 10/10 because it is quite short. Endless modes help, but they don't capture the fun of the arcade levels.
Still highly recommend.

So, one time, TRON and The Flash met at a bar, with Temple Run serving them some drinks...

That's like the very raw idea I got when I played FOTONICA.

The game is a first-person endless platform runner with geometrical visuals, and a really soothing soundtrack, with little controls. It gives off the feeling of a mobile game, because most mobile games are designed this way - with a one-touch playstyle. But, this isn't necessarily a bad thing, because this game could be one of those games with which you could sit back and relax with. Also, it's very enjoyable.

Gameplay:

So, it's got three modes - Endless, Arcade, and Versus. You'll get the idea from just reading them. But, let's get down to brass tacks. It's a first-person endless platform runner game, in which you sprint for miles and miles until you crash and lose. You have only one button to use, any button really, to jump over or dive under obstacles. The faster you go, the harder it gets to reach your destination (in arcade), and also the sooner the game changes colour (literally). I've actually played a game similar to this one, but it's not nearly as polished, or as upbeat as this one. So, even if the concept is not new, this game has used that concept the best so far.

Visuals:

It's like I'm in TRON. Like, legit. It's as if they made the game with just the object frameworks, and just went "this looks better, let's leave it like this", because they couldn't come up with good models to use or something. I'm probably just spit-balling here. But, it actually did work. It worked with the ambience of the game. Everything fits. So, yeah. You wouldn't have to worry about brilliant visuals, because even a Samsung Galaxy S7 would run it nicely without exploding, and it would still look brilliant.

Mechanics:

Nothing to go on with this one. I expected there would be mouse control, to look around or something. Or maybe I could have a diving move, or a jumping move separately made. Or there would even be the usual WASD controls. But, there is none. Press any button, and you speed up. Release the button, and you slow down. Doesn't matter what button you use, those are the controls. It was too simplistic for my taste. And eventually, it will be tiresome.

Soundtrack:

One of the things you gotta buy the game for. It's got really good tunes, even though it's electronic (I'm a metal/rock fan). But, hey, atleast it doesn't sound bad at all! coughunlike deadmau5cough ... In fact, it will help you immerse yourself into the game. Nothing like a calm but happy beat keeping your ears busy as you run to victory!

Verdict:

It's more like a mobile game than a PC game, even if it can get somewhat addictive with its playstyle, because of its primitive mechanics, and overall experience, but I think it's still worth the buy ... but strictly during sale. It's one of the few platform runner games which has got some decent stuff to provide. I can totally imagine this with VR support. And even though it sucks that there's little to no diversity with the controls, implementing a few stuff (camera controls for instance) in the next game would be an awesome thing.

Once, while playing Fotonica, I jumped over a chasm and found myself darting through a forest at the speed of a plane, jaw dropped. I could only looked ahead, because an instant's distraction would mean dropping forever into an eternal void, but the impression of the neon trees rushing by won't leave my memory any time soon.
This game is the trippiest, most adrenaline-filled one I have ever enjoyed. As your avatar starts running, always on a straight line through rising and falling obstacles, you hear their panting and your own heartbeat accelerates, trying to keep up. Then the simple-line world around the track unfolds at the corner of your eyes, and you have somehow bent the laws of physics with your body. Fotonica is way more than a running simulator or a platformer: its absolutely immersive levels stand out as a beautiful aesthetic experience. Simple, futuristic, liberating.

Conclusion

FOTONICA is a decent runner game at the end of the day. With little to almost no change to the typical platforming/running formula something unique can be created only by giving its levels a minimalistic gridwire look and fitting electronica soundtrack to create a specific theme for each stage.

Running at humanly impossible speeds feels just amazing, while you need to adjust running speed, time your jumps and dives right to survive to the next platform. The learning curve may be a bit steep, but as with all those games, they feel rewarding ever so much when you finally get it right.

Santa Ragione has created something unique for them and I can applaud them for their job well done. You cannot make a wrong decision with buying this game, even if you just want to take it a bit more casually. Give it a try!

Design & Art

Minimalistic art for a minimalistic game. While playing, visuals never feel overloaded but always sufficient for the established gameplay mechanics of FOTONICA. I would not call a wireframe look particularly innovative or interesting though. Luckily a possibility to change the overall appearance of the game exists.

The levels of FOTONICA are distinctly unique and surprisingly well themed. Each of them lets you take a plethora of possible routes leading to the end. Finding the way that is manageable plus rewarding enough at the same time is up to the player.

Sound & Music

The mostly electronica soundtrack was composed by three individual composers and fits to a T. Each of the tracks lends a theme to their respective level and creates a sense of uniqueness. Visuals and audio go hand in hand here in my opinion and fit each other perfectly.

Unfortunately, some notes are really high pitched and shrill and disrupt the otherwise marvelous soundtrack. Not only that, in some cases during my playthrough, sounds were not played when they were needed to which ended in some confusion. Apart from these minor bugs, an excellent combination of soundtrack, visual appearance and gameplay in my opinion.

Gameplay

FOTONICA focuses, more than other typical runner games, on correct timing and appropriate running speed. You control your runner through one key only, which, while on the ground accelerates the player and on release makes him jump. In the air, the button initiates a dive through the air, making it easier to land correctly.

Completing levels simply will not cut it, you need to find the best route through each of them and survive in order to break the approriate highscore. Testing your tenacity in three extra endless levels against other players or against up to four players directly in local splitscreen will leave you with much content to play around.

Each level also has four difficulty levels that do not increase the difficulty by altering the level, but by increasing the game speed and making reaction time windows tighter instead. A really interesting approach.

Personal Bonus vs. Penalty (10 points max)

Bonus

    • Addictive gameplay, that pushes you to the edges of your patience (never feels impossible though, approx. 10 to 20 hours of playtime)
    • Uniquely themed stages with fitting respective soundtracks
    • Endless levels to push your limits
    • Interesting and working concept for increasing the difficulty
    • Convincing feeling of speed, feels very good to look at running speeds humanly impossible

Penalties

    • Some audio bugs and shrill noises
    • Mastering a level on one difficulty will make it easier to complete it on other difficulties, because the routes stay mostly the same
    • Very little replay value, no additional randomized content next to endless modes

Bushnell's Law is an aphorism which describes how the best video games should be or often are "easy to learn and difficult to master." Fotonica nails this law. What you have is one of the most simple games I've ever seen, with a challenging but rewarding learning curve. Essentially, you hold down a button to run forward, release it to jump, and hold it down again to land and continue onward. The game's objective is to reach the end of a level by jumping across platforms as fast as possible without missing and falling into the void below. On easier difficulties, a slower running pace means that even a complete novice could ace any of the games levels within a few attempts. Ramping up the difficulty to the harder levels sees the player's avatar running at breakneck speeds where even a slight mistake or flaw in the player's execution means a restart.

Fotonica is a game that will challenge and reward regardless of the time put into it. Buy it on sale for a dollar or two and have you've got a great casual game to play while waiting for downloads or updates. Or, go nuts and spend hours on hours perfecting the game and learning its intricacies. At the end of the day, Fotonica is addicting and satisfying, with solid mechanics, outstanding visuals and a grooving minimal soundtrack to boot. You can't go wrong here.

At its core its a simple game. You run. Or rather the game runs, and you jump. You collect a few orbs, and try not to fall into a bottomless pit. That's it. So simple. And yet it's one of the most satisfying things you'll do in a game. It will test your reflexes, depth perception and distance perception. Yes, those are different. There are branching paths, though usually not left right but up and down, hazards you have to identify in the background and obstacles in the foreground that will force your brain to choose the best path with your current momentum as you’re running towards them at 180mph.

The art style is a kind of retro-hyperfuturistic feel, a geometrical art noir. Though by the images shown here it looks to be simple VR polygons, it is not. It feels like a game that would exist in the movie Gattaca if that makes any sense.

Very minimal runner but the gameplay is actually quite fun. Remembering the first person courses is usually not required for earlier levels and difficulties, but I can see it becoming required for later ones. The last couple of levels especially so.

Great music as well to keep you runnin'.

I only wish this had extra visualization options like Audio Surf or Rez to jazz it up a bit more.

A beautifully crafted casual game I bought for my Android Phone and Linux Desktop separately.

Quite simple premise, but actually enjoyable unlike many others: run, die, repeat. The thing is (on Desktop computers) you can press Q to quit and R to restart/repeat, which makes it even more fun as a casual play.

If you need to complicate your life with buttons, don't buy it. If you like to sit back and relax while enjoying immersive retrofuturistic graphics, proper background music, sweet sound effects and overall experience, maybe this is the one for you.

Also multiple paths on a linear track.

Comes together very nicely.

FOTONICA faithfully captures the arcade vector graphics of the late 1970's and early 1980's (I would love to see the game devs port this over to a Vectrex cartridge). It's more than a single button skill-fest. It's all about timing and reflexes, anticipating your next jump high or low and controlling the descent to the next platform with a second tap to the jump button. This maximizes runway after touching down to steadily increase your overall speed. Speed is king for keeping the gold bonus multiplier going as long as possible. Remember that the faster your character is travelling the faster you need to react in order to sucessfully land the next platform and continue.

Main game levels are enjoyable but really little more than a challenging training ground for the endless missions. Endless runs are the most satisfactory and entertaining for me personally. It's exciting to try to push the score for as long as possible and after failing a run it's cool to check the global stats to see how you ranked against everyone else playing the game. You have the option of choosing different characters that may favor speed over jump height or vice versa. This can potentially add to the replayability if you want to make the levels artifically more difficult. Just bring the wrong character to the chosen course.

The electronic music background soundtracks for the levels fit well with the overall atmosphere and give it a minimalist future feel without being overbearing.

What Is Fotonica ?

A game that I got because of its visuals, looking at its store page it looked really interesting to me, its concept is similar to an endless runner but this one is different, while there is actually an endless mode for players that like this subgenre, the game has 8 levels with 4 different difficult levels that change your speed, what makes this little runner indie game special, is its weird but nice and interesting looking visuals and its amazing soundtrack, the gameplay is simple but fun, it does its own little twists in the runner genre and while I'm not a fan of those games, IMO they are the type of game that you play on your mobile devices just to pass time nothing beyond that, FOTONICA has its own mechanics and traits that make it stand out and worth checking out on PC, took me 1 and half hour to complete all 8 levels on two difficult modes, played some endless runs too, theres is a versus mode so you can play with a friend, worth checking out.

This is a mobile game, absoultely not worth $15. I got it for $2 so I won't be refunding it. It's only good for 5-10 min playthroughs at a time, IMHO.

It has a really nice aesthetic and the different areas are cool. The music is lackluster: ambient and electronic. I don't think the soundtrack is dynamic; the game would greatly benefit if it was.

If you can get it on sale (+80% off), it might be worth your while. Otherwise, get something with a bit more substance.

A rhythm first person platformer that doesn’t really depend music. Jump timing and speed can sometimes be difficult to anticipate at first, but can feel great if you hit it just right. The visuals and gameplay can lull you into a good pace when you’re doing well, which makes it all the more jarring when you mess up. Fun game in short sessions.

TLDR: Simple one button runner. Release to land. Barebones presentation. Limited amount of levels. Did not enjoy the gameplay loop.

While the feeling of speed is there, the core gameplay is just lacking. The first person perspective is fairly unique but it did not contribute itself to the gameplay unlike say a tube runner where the perspective plays into you being allowed to go left or right.

With its focus on speed and multiple layers of paths to run through, FOTONICA plays almost like a first-person Sonic the Hedgehog -- and yet, despite the advantages of being first-person, the game manages to have the exact same problem Sonic does: you can't see far ahead enough to avoid obstacles (or in this case, pitfalls). Because of this, FOTONICA very quickly devolves into nothing more than trial-and-error, making the whole experience one of pure frustration.

In addition, FOTONICA is also incredibly short -- but this is just as well, since the game well and truly plays its hand by the third stage, and so padding the game out further would not have done it any favours.

A curiosity, and nothing more.

you have to run through very minimalistic landscapes. Some are kinda similar, such as rooms in some building. The runner also jumps, in my opinion this is not compelitly a platformer. It does have platformer characteristics, such as the pink dots one attempts to acquire by contact.A great game to be played for a minute or for hours.

There aren't many one-button games out there that present much of an engaging challenge. This one does though, and oozes with style.

It's easy to pick up and play, with crisp level design and an accompanying soundtrack that really helps create an immersive reality-warping transcendental experience.

Kinda like a stripped-down version of REZ if it were a first-person platformer made in the 80s.

I adore the aesthetic, the music is nice, it has a great sense of momentum, but FOTONICA shares the same issue every runner has: one-button trial and error more shallow than a sidewalk puddle. Charging $14.99 for something like this is downright criminal.

Honestly? Save yourself the time and just buy Rez instead.

This game is surprisingly fun and mega addicting to play. There is no real storyline (you can correct me if I'm wrong on that) but the gameplay is simple and fun. Only one button is utilized - holding it builds velocity, releasing it makes you jump. The levels are linear and there is no direction but forward. They start out pretty basic but get more and more complex the quicker you handle them. After a while you'll develop a rhythm to the levels that feels quite good to master. I still haven't finished it yet but I'd definitely give it a recommend.

This game is an absolutely incredible experience. It's the sort of experience that makes you feel completely immersed in energy and light, and the way you can feel this way at its full potential is without much light surrounding you.

FOTONICA is a beautifully simplistic game which I believe is designed to make you feel at one with your screen and connect with your inner player like no game ever has before. For once, the void and ones imagination have been connected to create something bigger.

Some people see this as your average speedrunning game, to which I say you're not wrong. But at the same time, the combination of music in the back ground, with the animation of speed affects passing your body inside the game, come together as one as one beautiful game which can produce an almost surreal state.

I would recommend this game to anyone who is looking for something simplistic, yet incredibly fun and addicting :)

At-A-Glance:

Game type: Action
Genre(s): Endless Runner
Art: Abstract wireframes
Length: Short (5-10 hours), theoretically infinite
Pace: Fast-paced
Tags: Great sountrack, rhythmic, stylized
Computer requirements: Low-end

Notes:

    • A cross between a rhythm game and an endless runner game with highly abstract graphics and a rockin' techno score.
    • After the first few levels, you get the point. I think this is an interesting "casual" game in the sense of playing casually, but I can't imagine someone getting deep, deep into this.
    • The first-person concept gives for some wonky timing. Do you jump when the gap touches the bottom of your screen, or when you perceive your character's feet being at the edge? A subtle difference, but one that matters.
    • At the time of this review, the game costs $15 USD. I would not pay that; get this on sale if you're interested in having the occasional run.

Brilliant concept.
Brilliant graphics.
Poor implementation of game play.

Far too difficult for the casual player.
The developer should add Easy, Medium and Hard as game modes.
At the moment, everything is just Super Hard.

After 2 hours of game play, I could only finish 4 of the Arcade tracks (levels).
Because of the difficulty level, the game is far too frustrating and unforgiving.
I am very disappointed in this game. I was really looking forward to it.

I would have loved to experience the sensation of moving (running) fast through this virtual world.
Unfortunately, this game does not allow for such fun.

Not recommended.
Stay away, ...unless the developers fix (tune) this game for the casual gamer.

Disclaimer: I bought this game for -85% on year end special. Still not worth the money.

I will keep the title, and not ask for a refund, just because I love the concept, and I love the graphics.
But unfortunately, there is no point in trying to actually play this game.

Great game! One-button controls but requires a lot of good timing

Very interesting auto runner with a chill soundtrack and trippy visuals !
It plays with only one button but still requires quite a bit of skills and reflexes to get 10 000 in every level.
The entire experience is worth it just for the visuals of the last level in my opinion !
The endless is fun too, but the 50k achievement in Salaria is kind of long and annoying, but I'm glad I got it !

Still, I recommend it fun experience, maybe 6.5/10

Fun stress inducing artsy platform game.

There is a very neat level/moment where you see this game represent jumping from one high point to another so well that its vertigo inducing. Might be worth it to wait for a half off sale or more at holiday.
