Garou: Mark of the Wolves plays a lot more differently than the original Fatal Fury games. I prefer how Garou plays to the traditional Fatal Fury games. This game has basically zero returning characters from the previous games. The only returning character is Terry. Having only one returning character isn't bad because you have to play with the other new characters. Two of my favorite character that are new in this game are B. Jenet and Rock. The final boss Kain isn't an impossible fight in this game. Compared to Kouryu from The Last Blade 2, Kain looks easy. The story is interesting and it continues after the previous cannon game. I wish there was a sequel to Garou though.

Although this game have almost 25 years old this is one of the best beat en ups ever made, the Fatal Fury release before this one was Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 and having 4 updates being the last a perfect version for the formula that started with Fatal Fury 3 and being difficult to improve, SNK made a new reboot of the series, with new characters (Terry is the only old character in this game the rest is all new characters), new game mechanics, faster gameplay and completely different graphics, the result couldn't be better and I strongly recommend it.

Garou MOTW is very different from its former Fatal Fury installments. It does bring back the smooth gameplay and sprite animation from Real Bout 2, as well the gorgeous and lively backgrounds. Lots of new mechanics make the game really fun to dive into. A solid new roster, though you might miss some old faces like Mary, Yamazaki and of course Geese. But there's Jenet, Gato, Tyz, Hotaru and Rock who were later brought to KOF games. All in all Garou is one of the best looking 2D fighters out there, regarded by many as one of the best of its genre. Great thing Code Mystics jumped in to fix Dotemu mess in this port. And hey, just the fact it has rollback now is enough to say it's a must have for anyone who loves the footsies life.

So far, it's a fun game, but it's clearly dated. The inputs are pitch perfect and among other things, it's like a well oiled 2001 mustang: it does what it needs to do, but you will wish it was a bit newer.

Pros:
- Rollback Netcode, legit it is actually amazing how much of a difference this makes. Instead of the awful delay based netcode Xrd and Fighterz uses, this netcode works very well, akin to almost being there irl.
- Game's soundtrack and characters rock. Definitely is fun to play all sorts of characters, and each one seems simple but actually become more complex the more you dive into frame data, hitboxes, and combos.
- This game isn't inherently hard, it is technical. This game is a lot like Street Fighter, in how there are little combos, it's simply about when you use them that matters, which I definitely like, a lot like Smash Brothers.

Cons:
- The inputs are ridiculous. Yeah I get it it's an SNK game, but this is still important to note. You have everything from double quarter circles, half circle back fronts, and 720s. These inputs need to be put in CRAZY FAST to combo into anything, and CRAZY PRECISE. I have tried 3 different controllers (Fight stick, Hori Fight Pad, and PS4 Analog), and all 3 of them I can only do certain special moves well enough to perform consistently, and others maybe 50% of the time even after 3 hours in the training room. Unlike modern fighting games, which are more lenient on your inputs, this game's legacy is basically "if you aren't perfect, it's not coming out. It's a real pain, especially when fun characters like Tizoc, which has 2 backwards full 360s for his Big Fall, become absolutely unapproachable until you master the exact commands in the training room. Execution is the most difficult thing in this game.
- Older game. It's a bit dated, not as many characters, and has a lot of old fashioned jank that hasn't been ironed out entirely.
- The AI in Story is near impossible. Another thing about games this old, this AI will mess you up. It will jump every fireball, punish every unsafe move, and always anti air you. It is crazy hard, but if you turn down the difficulty, it's baby food.
- Somewhat dead game. There is a great Garou discord, but don't expect anything akin to more modern day fighting games, or even like Melty Blood levels of popularity.

Conclusion: It's a great game with a great legacy behind it, but it's not exactly perfect. Of course I'll keep getting better and mastering it, but it by no means is it a cakewalk, unless said cake is made of tears and broken joysticks.

7.4/10, perfect for netplay, but not exactly perfect altogether.

EDIT: After careful consideration and some more hours on the training room, once I got past the initial learning curve, I'm going to have to raise it to an 8.5/10

Want a Fighting Game which is easy to learn and has simple but fun to do combos? This is your game!
Want a Fighting Game with the best netcode out there that you can even play against japan people? This is your game!

Garou: Mark of the Wolves was SNK's response to Street Fighter 3 in many aspects, counting with a complete revamped cast of characters and a more simple system compared to the original Fatal Fury/Real Bout series and some new mechanics, this game proved to be the best game SNK launched on it's time.

Totally worth the 10 dollars or even better on sale which mostly goes to 5 dollars, this is the game you guys have to give a chance even if you're not a hardcore Fighting Game player, too bad the game doesn't have a lobby system.

Kik0eru_san
Kik0eru_san

Great game, lots of fun to learn, and clean rollback netcode.

However at its core it's a port of an arcade game and an SNK arcade game at that. This means that you've still got the quarter munching CPUs and SNK's patented OP boss characters that make the single player pretty un-enjoyable.

People can harp on the characters in this game being all new characters to the Fatal Fury series all they want, but mechanically this is the greatest 2D fighting game ever made. Nothing comes close. Easy to pick up, but a skill cieling the size of the Shanghai Tower thanks to Just Defends, the TOP system, and Break Cancel combos. There's always something new to learn thanks to break cancels in particular, making the game timeless and easy to come back to.

The only gripe I have with this game is the lobby system. While CodeMystics did add rollback a year back, they didn't update the lobby system to allow more than just 2 people, which sucks when you have multiple people who want to play. I'm hoping they someday update the lobby system, and that it doesn't take as long as adding functional netcode did.

This game often goes on sale, but I feel the port is so good that it's worth any price you see it listed as.

I'm never playing the Fightcade version again.

Bonne Jenet best girl.

Zebra [FR/ENG]
Zebra [FR/ENG]

Much better than a Dotemu released which is usually bad in some ways for the online or contents, Code Mystic provided a simple interface with a rollback online multiplayer that can be modified by input delays or rollback, that's very good.

The training mode is very simple and "empty", obviously it is a simple emulated rom with a NeoGeoAES (dipswitched) which provided a training mode and this is very far from the quality of Iron Galaxy Studios training modes (which usually give more tool like record dummy and combos training).

The menu artworks are bad at times and the UI quite repulsive but simple.
The menu and artworks on Dotemu are much better, yes.
they still use the screenshots and video of the dotemu version on the store page.

You can still have access for the dotemu version with a right click on the game in steam then properties > betas and then entering the access code "dotemuversion", the dotemu is not good for online but i think is better in other ways, test it for yourself and make your own opinion about it, don't listen too much people, they exagerate most of the time, but no rollback on this version.

A lot of small studio enter this niche market by taking licence of old FightingGames from SNK or Capcom to make bad Front End without real content and grab some few bucks and experience.

It's like Garou Room on Fightcade2 but with 0 people online and no dipswitch options.

Online is almost desert.

it seems that the game is more slower than the arcade version.

SNK need to make he's own bundle, console or online service software for their roms(legal) with true contents.

Now for the Game, its a great game a direct rival to Street Fighter 3 and the last sequel to FF, with new mechanics, you have the equivalent of parry called "just defend" and a Sub-bar segment (TopBar) in the HP Bar that multiply your strenght that led to a new level of strategy... The roaster is limited but build on quality.
I found the HP bar too short and easy to reduce with few attacks, so a match can be done in a few second.
This game deserve a sequel, a pur one vs one with great pixel arts and animations.

The bad notation is just about the wrapping, and if you are here you probably already know the game, i'm just saving you a few bucks, it's just not better than using mame or FC2, but if you want the game on steam or you don't have it on NeoGeo, Smartphone, tablet etc buy it, you can ask for a refund if you don't like this "frontend".

This Fatal Fury - oriented game is a refined example of quality over quantity, and it does this by having its battle mechanics have subtle tactical applications, as well as having mechanics that could turn the tide of a match.

It has a battle system that includes air juggling the opponent, and a defensive technique that stalls and aids your character at the same time. More options are available in game that can boost your offense and defense.

Some King of Fighters fans may be reluctant to play this game because of the relatively small character pool and also may avoid this game due to how Terry lost his Rising Tackle and controls with a different 'feel' from titles such as King of Fighters '98.

It has beautiful backgrounds, lots of dynamic character animations for different situations, such as a spinning animation for characters that have just been struck by specific types of attacks, and transitions from one event and battle to the next,

Please give it a shot and stick with the awkward period of time it may take to adjust to the game while selecting a character you can confidently control.

I haven't put a lot of time into Garou but it is hands down one of the best fighting games I have ever played. Every character feels great, the T.O.P system is amazing, the art and music haven't aged at all and still looks and sounds amazing. It's an amazing game and probably one of SNK's best they'v ever put out. It's got amazing netcode and it's only $10, please buy this game.

I feel a bit silly for writing a review for a 20+ year old game but since this has been my first exposure to Garou: Mark of the Wolves (I was a Street Fighter kid growing up) maybe there's still some value in talking about it.

Lately I've been itching for a new fighting game and rare are the lists of "best fighting games" that don't include this one and I now understand the reason. You're not going to find a crazy amount of characters, levels, modes or anything that you typically see in more modern fighting games here, or other similar series from the same time period, but what you have is 2D fighting at its finest and it feels right.

Since this is my first time buying this game, I can't really speak to whether or not the steam version is the best one to get but one thing is for sure: You should play this. The fact that it's still around today, included in many "best fighting game" lists, is a testament of its greatness.

Port is really good, and the game itself is a lot of fun. Plays a lot more like Street Fighter than Fatal Fury, ironically enough. That said, it's still a really good game.
It's very simple but extremely beautiful, the spritework flows better than just about any game I've seen, even Third Strike. While the fact it's a pure port is sort of disappointing, and has a very... interesting... control scheme, it's still certainly worth the buy.

Hell yeah. Terry Bogard. Rock Howard. a Cool roster with them. Just Defends are awesome. Can block mid air. supers and specials are simple. Game is tight mechanically. The game is fun. People say its the 3rd Strike of SNK which is a good thing. But I actually like this more than 3rd Strike. the Pixel Art in this game is also so beautiful and nice and crisp.
My only complaint is how challenging the AI is in Difficulty 4 and up.
