played this game on xbox for 2k plus hours, and on steam like 100hours. It is what it is, been playing gears since i was 8, even tho this game gets allot of hate and i understand it completely you just can erase all the good times you had when playing this game and last gears games. maybe its because im loyal to this franchise who knows but if you want to try somthing new go ahead its original and fun. the movement is never seen before in any game. 8/10

It took a while until it catched me again, but then I enjoyed it very much. I would just wish the smoothed out the gameplay even more. Still so many bugs in the main mechanics - at least to much for my taste. It´s just not fun to die due to your character glitching and not your own inability.

Honestly gears has just gone down the drain since the end of gears 3 at this point they are just milking the absolute crap out of the franchise gears 4 and 5 should never have existed and just ended with gears 3 this game even though I love my GOW in my honest opinion this game isn't a must buy like GOW 1,2,3 they were gems this is just trash there is nothing to be excited with gears of war anymore so i cant really recommend it to anyone i will gladly recommend the original trilogy but not this rubbish and lets not talk about the co-op of multiplayer so no i cannot recommend this to anyone simply not worth your time save your money and buy a different game.

Played Gears 2 and 3 back in the day on xbox 360. I always scoffed whenever I came across Gears 5 on Steam, like it *must* be some trash game since all you hear from the community is that its bad.

I'm glad to have found out that this game isn't bad at all, actually. I am still able to find PvP and horde mode matches promptly. I perhaps didn't remember how fun and unique gears of war versus mode is. It is still a blast in Gears 5, feels just like it did back in the day with better visuals and animations. Try it out!

I have not played a Gears Game since Xbox 360 and I have to say, this Game is honestly a solid Gaming experience. In terms of Graphics this game hits it out of the Park....it is beautiful!!! Combat is fun, challenging and offers a number of options to get things done.....lots of stuff to find/discover. I am not done yet, but I find the story is solid, engaging and offers several differnent characters and stories to participate in. I have not tried the online/multiplayer yet so I can't comment on that.

This game is super close to my heart. The storyline, the gameplay mechanics, the graphics, mind blowing. Desperately waiting for Gears 6

I wish they ported gears of war 2,3, and judgement to the PC and remaster 2 since that was the best one in my opinion. Microsoft was able to make Halo Master chief collection into the PC but why haven't they done that for Gears or even make a Marcus Fenix collection. Gears 5 was ok but the ones from back in the days were better. If they make a Marcus Fenix collection someday I really buy that.

remember that time u FUCKED OFF?
remember that …

Q1. How to get rid of the mother-f-ing vertical synchronization ? Even if you turn it off from settings, it doesn't turn off! You gotta look up to look down! I swear, this game is absolutely unplayable!

Q2. Where are the previous four parts? The game drops us in the middle of a random story. May I have any clue about what the hell is going on?
Let me guess, the previous parts are on Xbox, right? Nope, thanks, I'm not a part of your pride console community, I will never play shooters using a gamepad.

Also, I want to thank Microsoft for filling up the vacuum of SJW propaganda. Thank f12king you.

Conclusion: Gears 5 is a piece of uncontrollable misunderstanding.
Never pay for this, ofc if you don’t participate in a contest like “Try not to refund” .

Fun game to enjoy for a couple of hours. The history isn't great, but at least keep you in the game.

Gears 5 is a solid game but not as good and epic as the previous trilogy due to many small details that make it a weaker game.

The Shooting system and even melee combat lack weight.
More vibrant colors instead of dark and tragic athmosphere of the past.

This game has 2 different souls:
the first part is really boring, slow with a fake, empty open map to explore.
The second part is where the game starts to shine, gets more linear and reminds you what Gears of War is.

I was bored of all the 2021/2022 shooter titles. This GOTY version was on sale and even though I completed it a Good while ago, I thought I'd go back to it and enjoy the DLC content after a second play through. I'm enjoying this game so much more. It's better than I remember somehow. I highly recommend this game if recently you are board of current games.

At the time of writing this review I had 7.3 hours of play, and I can tell you, THIS GAME IS FILLED WITH PERFORMANCE ISSUES, graphical bugs and serious frame drops. The characters and the story are interesting but that's it, I don't feel engage with the game and the tecnical issues makes this game cero inmersive.

The gameplay is ok, this is not an open world game (if that is what you are looking for), it is very straight foward, go to there and do something, the combat system is interesting but nothing special.

My biggest issue with this game is the graphics behavior, sometimes runs well and sometimes runs like trash, idk why, I have a really good PC that runs more demanding games without any issue. I loved the saga back in the x360 era, but this one I can't recommend.

I tried everithing, updating the graphics driver, close every other application (main and background ones) and I can't get a constant 60FPS in any resolution, and we are talking a game that is 4 years old. I can't believe that a big publisher like Xbox Games Studios can launch a game is this condition and even worst, can't do something about it.

Save your money for something else.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

This was my first Gears game so I don't have anything to compare it with.
I played this in single player mode and loved it.
Had an issue with the sound when first playing the game, some sounds and Character's voices were very faint or not playing at all. Quickly Googled the problem and viola problem solved. Other than that I had no technical issued within the game.
Game ran smoothly and the graphics are great.

Say what you will about the story, whether you like it or not, care for the new direction and it's continuation or not. This game, its multiplayer, and its action are top notch, and very worth its price tag. Occasional disconnects in multiplayer, and frame issues in the campaign, it keeps me coming back to it again and again. Buy this game.

With Games for Windows being gone and no longer being able to play the original trilogy, this is probably the best way to get back to that nostalgia. I enjoyed the campaign and is definitely better than what came before it. It doesn't top the trilogy but I would lump it behind them. Horde is great, multiplayer is thriving and fun as hell, and co-op hasn't changed. Makes me happy the game is being taken care of by fans or people who at least care. I heavily recommend this game if you want the nostalgia and can't afford a 360.

There are heavy microtransactions in the game but they're mostly cosmetic and can be unlocked very easily. I heard it was worse back then but I'd say it's barely in the way. I did see that executions from previous games were taken out and made cosmetics which kinda put a sour taste in my mouth but you can definitely ignore it.

As someone who has played the Gears of War Franchise since its conception, I have to be blatantly honest. This game does not live up to its predecessors in terms of story or tone.

Kait it a bit of an annoying main character (IMO JD wasn't really hitting the spot either), and really the world of Sera feels a bit less interesting than it was during E-Day. Personally I am not a big fan of the campaign here.

However, everything else about this game? So good.
Horde mode? Probably the most interesting and replayable version of the mode yet.
Multiplayer? Pretty tight, almost as good as the rest of the series.
The brand new escape mode? Freakin sweet Lois.
The Hive Buster expansion? Actually good Co-Op story expansion.

Overall, while I still think the main campaign of this game is kinda lame, everything else being so good ultimately makes up for it. I recommend this game to anyone that just wants some fun Gears Of War PVP/PVE gameplay. If you're looking for a good Single Player/ Co-Op campaign, maybe wait for a sale, then get the Hivebuster expansion and play that with some friends

It's sad knowing gears of war 4 has way more content and skins than this game ever had even at launch this game has been thrown through hell wish we got a remastered collection of 1 2 3 on pc but we'll have to see if that ever happens

Makes you create an Microsoft account, and choose a gamer tag. Then when you try to play co-op, it doesn't work. Spent more time trying to find ,y friend and get the co-op to work than we did playing.

The campaign is nothing more than a poorly disguised SJW / global homogenization political agenda vehicle. But IDGAF about campaign. I have played Gears multiplayer for over 15 years and it has felt like purgatory since the end of the trilogy. MP is the true Gears experience, and the multiplayer here is a depressing, hollow shell of what GoW used to be. Most people don't even speak English now and this is not a joke for US players. Majority language is definitely Spanish. Playing this game solo or having a casual team is a total inevitable bummer and waste of time given the fundamental nature of a philosophically bastardized third person cover shooter with a tryhard player base.
TC (devs) has no business captaining the series. Absurd UI menu design and bug issues that never had a chance to be fixed most likely from sheer incompetence. Tuning of the high skill MP meta is unsatisfying in a series where it used to be the zenith of all competitive gaming satisfaction. Spend the time, get exceptionally good and it will still leave a bad taste in your mouth so to speak 99.9% of the time. There is no collective studio talent capable of understanding the metaphysics of what made Gears of War so special. The spirit of fraternity that birthed it is long gone.
Gears remasters of the original Epic Games developed trilogy being announced is the only hope for us forsaken true GoW fans. Don't think for a second you'll be acquainted with what made Gears worthwhile as a legendary classic by playing this. You're far better off never having visited this cursed, haunted home of a game series if you aren't an original player. Turn back now

If your wish is just to get kicked out from the "Co-op" Horde match for no reason just you doing your job (class) in easiest Horde mode or help reviving other people. This game is for you.

Even 10 years old game like Space Marine Exterminatus co-op mode players wasn't spineless/prideful/arrogant like this game playerbase, lmao.

btw singleplayer is just ok, not amazing or bad, its fun coop singleplayer campaign to play with your friends.

This game is an embarrassment for the gears of war franchise and makes me sad on so many levels. Same same for gow 4.

Story is trash, gore and violence details decreased massively after gow1-3, and in general: love and passion for details is completely missing.

Gears 5 Horde spawns are the shittiest, most obnoxious, most unfair bullshit I have ever seen in my life. For the last month, I've had Wakaatu repeatedly burst out from under my feet, multiple times per match, not matter where I am on the map. When I kill a Warden too fast, the game spawns another and will repeatedly do so. I've watched the game spawn two Wardens right in front of me because I killed one in a boss wave too fast. I don't know what the garbage-teir devs at the coalition changed, but Horde has become un-fucking-playable since August. If it gets fixed soon I can take this review down, but as it stands, Horde, which is the only mode I really enjoy, is unbearable shit to play.

After all this time i would of thought that the developers of this game would of ironed out the bugs. if your here just for story fine the campaign isn't that bad but if your here to play multiplayer might as well find a different game. Mid match the game will close or you will get booted out and it will say you can't connect its sad that this is still a problem.

Really great quality game - worth the purchase during steam sales. DLC hivebusters rather short, but great graphics and atmosphere in the game overall (for DLC) so bundled with the base game - worth it.

Would buy another gears game in the future (especially during a sale).

I've heard people say that the game is a step down from it's predecessors, but for me it's more then given my money's worth in gametime playing co-op with my friends. Maybe if I cared about competitive multiplayer I'd be more disappointed but I don't, so I'm not.

It's Gears of war.
The best shooter mechanics ever invented.
And once again it works great.

One of those trash games from that forces you to sign up via email before you can play the game. I did this a long time ago. Well time passed and i wanted to play gears again, but forgot the password. Now i have to jump through Microsoft's customer service to reset my password so i can play a game i've already payed for - on steam, a service that already has my games behind a username and password. I just uninstalled it's genuinely not worth the trouble.

This review is entirely focused on the single player campaign, I play multiplayer in games very rarely however I have played every other Gears title excluding Tactics and imo story wise this is the best game since Gears Of War 2, and this is coming from someone who walked away from Gears 4 thinking the characters and story were overall less than stellar. Gameplay wise the gunplay is basically the same from 4 with the added ability to play as Jack in co op or use Jack's new abilities to give yourself a bit of an edge in battle. Other than this though most of the other additions or new mechanics this game tries to introduce feel either unnecessary or just straight up bad or lazy. Some of the new weapons like the claw and breaker mace just feel unnecessary (why do we need a melee weapon that will simply break after some hits when the lancer, retro lancer and combat knife are things that get the job done just fine if not better in the case of the lancer?) Personally I haven't been a fan of the Dropshot either but I think that's mostly just because i'm too nooblish and impatient to learn how to use it properly. Then we move onto the stealth...That's right in a series about big gun fights and explosive setpieces they thought it best to try to push a half baked stealth mechanic on you, and when I say half baked I mean half baked, no crouch or sneak, no thought given to enemy placement during these segments in order to really promote the sneak stab strat, and no suspicion or detection gauge or anything like that, if the enemy catches one whiff of a silent fart coming from your direction that's the whole room alerted and shooting (although interestingly enough they will flat out ignore the bodies of their comrades just lying out in the open provided they did not physically see you do the deed.) Thankfully these stealth sections aren't mandatory, you can simply shoot through however this is indicative of what the prevailing development philosophy must have largely been "other popular games are doing it so that means we have to!" some other examples: an RPGish skill point system that is used to upgrade Jack, not a terrible addition (unlike the aforementioned baby's first stealth "system") but also unnecessary and uninspired "other games have RPG systems so we gotta!" We also have in a couple acts some pseudo open world sections that are mostly just barren with little in the way of interesting side content or activities to delve into, just pretty much some of the laziest padding you've ever seen in your life, forcing the player to drive through empty spaces of nothing just to get to the next major area, on top of that some areas are revisited so you'll have to make that trip twice. Your only rewards for exploring during these acts are some optional upgrades for Jack, optional firefights and collectibles. Not exactly an Elden Ring or Witcher killer on our hands. Tbh this is probably the part that irritates me the most because even if you just follow the story beats this is egregiously lazy padding that is forced upon you, you cannot skip it, the aforementioned light RPG mechanics aren't too bad and can even be ignored, the occasional push toward stealth is annoying but can again be ignored, this pathetic excuse for a "semi open world" is shoved down your throat and forced to be engaged in if only on the superficial level, that is not going to the "side areas" and once more "everyone else is going open world so we have to!" At this point I begun seriously wondering if the devs of this game ever had an original thought or idea in their lives. One more slightly spoilery thing i'll bring up, near the end of the game you are given a choice, this choice seems to affect precious little moving forward and you go through the same fights, reach the same ending and have even largely the same character interactions regardless of what you choose. I really don't understand why this choice needed to be in the game, it adds nothing to either the gameplay nor the story and felt again like another case of "other games have choices and multiple endings so we have to!" even though like I said the choice barely has any consequences but still it means the game TECHNICALLY has 2 endings on paper, even if not so much in practice. One last thing i'll say about this choice is it is also functionally unnecessary...Why would you throw the knife at one of her tentacles when you could simply throw it at her face and either kill her or at least force her to lose her grip on both of them for them to both escape and survive? Obviously storywise they really wanted a major character death here one way or the other but I can't help but feel like it could have been done so much better and this pointless "decision" scrapped. Overall despite all the shit I give this game in my review I did truly enjoy it for the most part, the story is pretty good (badly written choice aside) and the moment to moment combat was a blast and even a bit challenging from time to time on the standard difficulty setting. The graphics are gorgeous and the sound design is tops. I just wish the devs would allow Gears to be Gears and let it bring it's own identity and be its own game rather than try so hard to turn it into every other AAA game on the market. I wish it could just be the franchise I fell in love with rather than being slowly turned into yet another soulless corporate money vacuum. Almost wouldn't be surprised if we got live service Gears at some point.

Originally posted on the Halo MCC Collection reviews. Reposting on other games affected by this issue.

Game is dependent on a Microsoft account, did not think that was a problem in the past.

Unable to play this game now as I have not been able to use my Microsoft account for two and a half months (Start of May).

Started off with my account having issues logging in.
Turns out it was hijacked, so the account was locked and I have since ended up going through endless hoops of support, who all say they can't do anything directly and to submit a form to unlock the account.
I have submitted four forms over the last two and a half months with no emails or information back.

Requests for information get bounced around from place to place. Most saying they do not have the ability or cannot due to privacy concerns. More like they don't want any accountability.
Once asked for a supervisor, waited two hours on the phone. He said he would call me back at a specific day at a specific time, he never did.
Poor support staff are usually as helpful as they can be which is not much. Anyone with any access does not interact with end users and information does not dribble through at all.
If the unlock form id's are anything to base this on, then over the last two and a half months they have had 600,000+ additional new requests for account unlocks, wonder how many of them also had their accounts hijacked and are not having much luck.

One support ticket I supplied a whole bunch of information for my gmail account. Ended up receiving an email a month later saying the investigation would be cancelled unless I supplied more information so I supplied as much as I could, order numbers and everything. Never got another reply or response from that line again.

If you lose your account due to whatever vulnerability they have then good luck trying to get access again. I had two factor authentication and I don't reuse passwords for accounts.
This is not my only game on steam tied to a Microsoft account, I have lost many hundreds of pounds worth of games thanks to this mess. I have zero trust in this company from now on.

-- Update --
So here is an update on the above.

Request for account reinstatement denied on the latest (glad they actually bothered to email this time).

I supplied order numbers, dates, times, transaction Id's, the works. Fucking denied.

So any games and shit that get bought that's it, all literally unusable.

You get an email back saying you did not supply enough details and that all further messages will be ignored and that they know its "frustrating".

Two factor on microsoft accounts has vulnerabilities and can be worked around so your account can be stolen without you even knowing about it.

After that, the support guys will ignore your ticket for ages, until you keep doing them, then finally give you the fuck you.

Never buying another microsoft related game again, seeking refunds (though I highly doubt I would get any of my money back).

Do not recommend. Multiplayer can be fun, depends on how bad the lag compensation is that day. There are still a lot of talented players, so I guess the playerbase hasn't died completely. I disliked the campaign, and (to me) it doesn't have any replayability.

After playing thorugh the game now several times. I've come to conclusion that Gears 5 is the most disappointing Gears game in history.

The games hard only cause its lazily and aritificially made harder cause the level designers clearly don't know how to make a game actually hard other than just throwing bullet sponges at the player in the form of minibosses with actual "health bars"

If you need to pad the content by ending the explorative portion of the game with 2 Snatchers, 3 Sicrons that are only there to make the player(s) burn what is 1-2 hours time on cause the player only has trash weapons at this point. You are pathetic level designers and enemy designers not to mention where are the effing berserkers ffs. 2/10

The writing is clearly woke and has massive amounts of just clear f~ ism thrown in just to farm brownie points from the weird masculine but very feminine "fans" instead of telling a good story the game is trying to convinice you women are somehow also men. 1/10

RPG elements are lazily thrown in to pad out the progression whats sad is even if you remove the secondary optional quests in it still doesn't save the story telling. 1/10

NG+ bottom of the barrel desperate attempt to please the OG fans 1/10

Plot and actual progression of the story; -9/10 most of Gear Of War 5's plot goes apsolutely no where Kait is completely irrelevant to the actual plot line. This earns a negative score cause the campaign is literal filler.

Is the mutliplayer good at least: Arguably this is the only feature the Coalition got remotely right a solid 8/10

TDLR: The Gears franchise and IP has been turned into the most turd backwards arena shooter game the whole story telling quite honestly got the shaft in terms of production.

If I had to give an over all score it would be like 10/50 or 20/100 May as well call this Gears of Wokeness.

One of my favorite games of all time was Gears of War 2, I played hundreds of hours of online multiplayer instead of working on schoolwork in school at that time. Gears 3 was pretty good too, a friend and I traveled about an hour for a Gears 3 2v2 tournament a few towns away and placed 2nd overall.

Gears has always given me fond and brutal memories of gore and violence, you get a gun with a freaking chainsaw attached to it for crying out loud! Anyway, this game isn't as good as the previous installments; but it is still a good game.

Gears is about big-muscled-survivor-men. This game features too many women, I want a cast that looks like they're from the original Predator, not some generic post 2015 feminist remake of once popular franchises. Is a cast of steroid infused muscled hunks who bathe in blood too much to ask for? If you came to play as Marcus Phoenix, don't buy. You mostly play as some pushovers, save Marcus's son (who you barely get to play as).

Anyway, the game plays like the previous ones, building on existing gameplay with slight improvements to playstyle. Visually it's where it should be and the sound quality is great. I love the guitar riff when combat ends, it's so nostalgic. Story is fine, a bit convoluted at this point because of how crazy it got in the previous games (it's always gotta get crazier than the last, am I right?).

Overall, 8/10

My personal preferences aside, it's a quality game well worth the price of any sale it goes on. Campaign is long, certainly if you are like me and play on the hardest difficulty for most of the campaign (one damn hardcore mission forced me to lower it). Multiplayer is great.

Not a terrible game but easily the worst in the series. Floaty aiming controls, bugs that cause weapons to vanish from your skiff, bland open world sections, weak friendly AI and a story that runs out of steam by the halfway mark, all drag down the experience.
Play any of the previous games in the series for a better time.

After seeing all the negative reviews for Gears 5 I was hesitant to pick it up and start playing. There are a few bugs and some of them did require me to restart the game. The biggest being towards the end when a Swarmak glitched out and wouldn't let me continue the story. I'd say what really impressed me with this game were a few things. First off were the graphics. The graphics on this game are really good. I am playing on not that great hardware with a 2GB graphics card and it still looked and performed great on my hardware. I would also like to applaud the games soundtrack and voice actors. I've played quite a few of the Gears titles and what I always liked were the gravely deep voices of the main actors. The storyline was also very good. There were some surprising bits and Gears 5 even allows you to make some choices in the storyline that affect what will happen later in the game.

Great game!

Its a good game. The people saying its bad either cant run this properly or are simply nostalgia blind. I've gone back and actually played all the gears recently and while yes, story wise and art style wise the old games win, but everything else? Gears 5 wins. People saying the game doesnt control well need to be honest and go play Gears 1 or 2. Gears 1 and 2 run in 30fps, gears 5 runs at over 100.

Doesn't feel like Gears of War anymore but I do recommend it for co-op with 2-3 friends. I encounter some unfair encounters on Insane difficulty and some parts of the game just soft locks itself making it confusing whether I was suppose to proceed or did the devs make it virtually impossible progress through certain encounters. The story is mediocre at best doesn't capture what made the original trilogy so special which is why you should play this in co-op, decides any game no matter how good or bad it is playing it with friends makes the experience memorable and enjoyable.

This has to be the most content I've seen in a gears game. You have the main story, new game plus, Hivebuster story dlc, versus with returning & new game modes even lifting some from Gears of war judgment , escape follows team scorpio their task is to fight their way out of a swarm hive whilst racing to escape a detonating venom bomb. For the first time ever in a gears game it utilizes a map editor exclusive to this mode allowing players to create their own scenarios, lastly we have horde mode consist of base building but just like ever other game the Coalition had to include hero shooter classes in this mode. Each class has their own ability with modification through a card system.

Only buy this game on sale with friends.

I've played Gears since the first one came out on the Xbox 360. I've enjoyed my time on all Gears of War games and this one is no different.

I will say the one thing that could be approved upon is the random disconnecting from services mid game, it doesn't happen a lot but its a bummer when it does, especially if you kicking ass. If you play logged in through your Xbox account, you can't receive messages/invites from people playing on Xbox.

All around its another great Gears Of War game, I do recommend getting this game. It worth the money as there is so much to do depending what you are looking to get out of a game.

I've played every single mainline gears campaign back to back after buying them a few months ago. Havent touched them before.

It's true that since the 4 th the series changed for less punchy combat and less gore, and these are both objectively step downs from the intial trilogy (and judgment).

However it's far from being as bad as some say and I think too much nostalgia is the explanation here.

It's still gears at it's core.

All in all I feel like 4 was a step down from the trilogy, but that with 5 the coalition is starting to come back up and get the series more into their own spin on GoW instead of the "fun uncharted-like romp with bland robots" that the 4 was going for (and that aspect was mediocre)

Dk and dc about anything other than single player campaign so can't talk on MP or coop. I'm glad I didn't just listen to rando youtubers who were practically saying it was garbage.

It's amazing to finally be able to play a Gears of War game after all this time, it's not perfect as the controls for laptop/PC is kinda awkward having the reload button as the melee button when really it should be the same as the rev-up one but it's still a Gears game which is available on Steam.

I wouldn't recommend getting this if you don't have a strong PC/Laptop as the game takes over 110GB's of space which is A LOT, but if it's on sale then you should get it.

This game is definitely a huge bounce back from Gears 4 and Judgement, as it not only honors the predecessors well, but adds its own new flairs and actually capitalizes on the new themes introduced in 4, that were never really used well.

The campaign is again co-op (three player where one plays as Dave/Jack, strangely, but okay), and starts out with the typical Gears method of progression, before eventually branching out into this more open world style, that works fairly well. You travel on this skiff thing to different destinations, some optional, and can find upgrades for Jack or side stories. There are plenty of references to past games to keep the story tight, like those drill platform things are seen abandoned where they were left following the events of Gears 2, and the giant riftworm's skeleton is now the walls of a village. The Hivebusters DLC is definitely worth your time, too. It's really fun in introducing three new characters and even manages to end with you finding out what one particular longtime character has been doing since his retirement. The campaign has its own unique environments and story, progresses entirely like you're used to in the other Gears games, and the three characters in it can actually use their "Ultimate" ability that they have in multiplayer mode!

Speaking of multiplayer, while I'm not a fan of PvP, Horde mode is back and miles better than it was in even Gears 3. Originally this mode was poorly designed with characters attached to their classes and only mechanics/engineers able to build and maintain fortifications, but the devs went out of their way to fix this and made the mode WAAAY better than what it had been, becoming one of the best tower defense/survival modes in any game I've played, with what all it offers you. You fight 50 waves of enemies, using barriers, sentries, decoys, and more at your disposal, and this time you get a "Weapons Locker", which regenerates the ammo of any weapon you put on it, and can carry up to four weapons at a time when fully upgraded. My only problem with the mode is that certain bosses need to either not appear until much later boss waves, or lose their one-hit-kill moves if you get within close range. There's a sweet spot where you can fry them with the Scorcher for effective damage, but it's all too easy to find yourself within range of their insta-kill moves, and attacking from farther than that just isn't feasible due to how little damage they take.

In addition to the returning modes, there's also an additional multiplayer mode called Escape that ties into the Hivebusters DLC. I very much recommend that you play the Hivebusters campaign first for story relevance, but either way you find out very quickly what this mode means. After selecting a character, class, map, and difficulty modifiers, starting the mode sees your character put on some sort of breathing apparatus before voluntarily getting caught by a Snatcher (new enemy introduced in Gears 4). After the loading screen is done, you find yourself in a flesh pod and knife your way out. All player characters then plant a small bomb next to them, and then you gain control. Your task is to outrun the gas bomb you've set, and fight your way out of an enemy hive. The map you choose will affect the themes you encounter along the way, one map offers mostly long range weapons, one mostly melee, one focuses on ambushes, one notably has new routes every time, one has a focus on getting out as fast as possible, one has an invincible scion, one has almost all rejects, one has a huge gauntlet of enemies inbetween you and the exit, and much more. Whether you do them solo or with other players, this mode is a really good addition that lends itself well to the Gears formula.

Also apparently you can make your own hives for Escape mode (I apparently got the achievement for that despite not knowing you could)? Sounds like an interesting feature but I've never tried it.

I am not one for this games multi-player. While it is good, just not for me. I have been a Gears fan since the first game, and it is the campaign that I enjoy the most.
This one adds nicely to the lore in my opinion and expands on the world. The variety in the biomes comes as nice change, moving from urban to snow to desert.
Graphically, looks really good when dialed up to 11, but also looks good at regular settings. Don't need a beastly machine to run this which is nice.
Overall a fun experience and would recommend it to anyone that enjoys a third person action, adventure shooter.

I love the Gears of War story this game has taken a whole new turn to the story with parts where it feels like an open world to explore or continue the main story. The endgame choice was definitely the hardest decision I've ever had to make. But in the end it is a very good third person shooter game and the guns and weapons are very balanced including in the multiplayer. I also love the multiplayer from the versus, to the horde where its like survive and defend, and escape where you infiltrate a location and escape in a certain amount of time so much fun. Last but not least the skins you can get for guns and characters you can pay for them if you want but you have the ability to get the coins and stuff you need to unlock them as you play which makes it so nice. Highly recommend this game to anyone looking to play something balance and that isn't broken like Call of Duty and other games that have unbalanced matches.

Through the first act I thought was pretty fun, this game looked great and ran very well. I had a couple of hard crashes. Deeply flawed gameplay mechanics around the "open world" bits and with regard to the floating Jack bot really shat in the mashed potatoes here. The puzzles ( i guess you would call them) began to overtake the gameplay here and consisted of sending the jackbot to interact with difficult to locate plot nodes. The structure of these encounters became pretty predictable after a bit. All that being said it is still fun to gib the badguys here. I completed the game in 34 hours ( a good amount of that time was finding the dumb things to send jackbot to fix) Next time more gibbing bad guys please...buy on clearance sale only.

Jack, Rip that door!

I had a hard time deciding whether to recommend this game or not, bad way to start but hear me out. Gears 5 is definitely one of the weaker installments of the franchise. From open world segments that are tedious and pointless, to gun-play that is nowhere near as satisfying as the older games. Additionally, a major plot point at the conclusion of the game seemed haphazardly thrown in and was the least compelling part of the whole campaign (Think the "who to save" decision at the beginning of Wolfenstein: the New Order). That being said this is definitely a Gears game. If you liked four you'll definitely like five, though it seems to take the worst aspects of four and expand them. If you liked the originals you will tolerate Gears 5. The original and soooooo satisfying gameplay is still there, you just got to dig a little deeper for it. The characters are colorful and entertaining as ever (More Del!) and the maps are varied and interesting. Graphically this game looks amazing and a lot of care was put into packing its level full of detail, something I really appreciated. While the pros barely outweigh the cons, I would give this game a shot. Who knows? You might disagree with a random person on the internet and find a game you really like.

(I know it says I only played three hours of this game but I finished the whole campaign, I was just offline at the time. Also, I never played Hivebusters which is supposed to be more like the classic Gears games so might want to check it out.)

I only love hoard mode. The most annoying aspect is that no one stays for the entire match which only takes about 20 minutes. The worst part though is that after they leave you're stuck with amateur level bots as your allies. They don't do any significant damage and they're mostly just place holders. I wish they were upgradeable or at least competent to hold their own. I do like that they prioritize reviving players, but still. The bots situation needs to be improved. I also wish real players could join to replace missing players. At least as an option.

Overall, it's a great game (hoard mode) when everyone plays, stays and works together. The last thing which I dislike is the energy system. It forces you to move out from cover to retrieve energy. I dislike this because players work against each other to steal each others energy which is required for upgrades. Very annoying.

When playing Gears 5, all I had was a sense that the developers wanted to push into a more open-map formula but also wanted to stick to the original level design already perfected in other Gears games. This would not be a problem if the game had a more engaging story and choices, as well as a more focused level design because it was weird playing the game like a normal Gears game and then being thrown into playing a more open map. The reason this is jarring is the fact that these two acts that are open-map do not have much in them, are boring to navigate through, and overall bland to look at. Although they are extremely barren, there are some cool ideas implemented, and some, like the third acts weather, can also become an annoyance. However, when it was more linear and story driven, the game felt more engaging, and had a better pace, as well as better level design and atmosphere. Overall, Gears 5 is a decent game with an average story, great to look at in terms of graphical fidelity, and also has good combat and gun-play, but is not one I would recommend due to the odd choice in the games level design. This gripe for me may not be that major for others, and thus Gears 5 gets a score of 6/10, but is personally not a game I would recommend to a friend unless they had a bit of time to kill and some extra money to burn. Pick up on-sale for an average 3rd-person FPS with a dozen hours of playtime.

It's a Gears game, but it has "open world" segments that are completely pointless and should just stick to the hallway progress of old. Why are they pointless? You just use the vehicle to move from one location to another, and NOTHING happens in between. No vehicle fights, no enemy fights, nothing. The abilities they give you in this game are terrible to use and usually just gimmicky, should've just stuck with the gunplay.

Also a major reason why I'm thumbsdowning: I have all progress other than main mission progress in 2 acts so far. What do I mean by progress? In the open world segments mentioned above, you do side missions at the locations and usually get a nice reward. This happened once in the 2nd act but near the beginning so thought it was a minor bug. It happened again in the 3rd Act and lost 6+ hours of progress. This is absolutely unforgivable in game, so if you do decide to play through it, play in one sitting from Act to Act.

P.S. the vehicle can also bug out and become unusable several times. You fix this be reopening the game, but risk losing small amounts of progress by doing so.

Overall, I can't put my finger on anything in particular that is bad about this game, other than the gameplay loop, the story, the characters, the PvP, the Horde mode, the Escape mode, the guns, the open world parts, the Jack bot, the audio desyncs, the terrible audio track that cuts out, the inability of recognition of valid shots on a target and the story. Trivial things really, but it just doesn't feel like a great game because of these few things.

campaign is what you'd expect from a gears of war. the only thing worth this on pc is the fact you can do couch co-op or same screen co-op when all games are dropping support for it (look up nucleus co-op if you want couch co-op for pc games). the online multiplayer is trash and unusable with how bad the lag is if you bought it with multiplayer in mind, don't. quite sad considering gears of war was my favorite multiplayer game franchine.

Kronos
Kronos

Gears 5 is extremely mixed imo, on the one hand I think the campaign is great, and despite some average characters like Kait, and Del (especially Del) I think it tells a solid story with some good callbacks to the series and cool world building. The multiplayer had alot of issues at launch that quickly made people drop faith in the game, then the coalition fell into the same cycle that they did with 4 where they spent the whole development cycle changing and reinventing how mechanics and systems work instead of adding new stuff. Horde is fine and after the classes locked to characters was disposed of it is actually solid and probably better than 4s horde mode. Escape was cool for something new but was overall quite average. One of the best additions to the game was the hive busters campaign, its a shame it was so short. One of my biggest issues with this game is it tries to reinvent alot of enimies and weapons that were already in the series, theres a new fully automatic pistol called the talon, however we already had the gorgon pistol, which is signifigantly cooler, same with the dropshot replacing the digger, embar replacing the breechshot etc. There are some cool new additions like the claw lmg and the trishot. Most of the new enemies like the infected deebees arent that fun to fight, although the Warden is a cool addition and probably one of the best new enemies. Id only recommend this game if you enjoy the Gears story and want to try the extra game modes, multiplayer is fun but is seemingly dead in most regions other than the US.

I wanted to add an extra section for what I want to see in Gears 6. The first and most important thing is forced crossplay, crossplay was added to gears 5 eventually but it was too late, and they made a terrible mistake with it, they allowed console players to turn it off, I have no issue with console players, however experiencing what console gears players say and spending some time in their facebook group, they are one of the least intelligent, arrogant, ignorant, and unaware groups ive ever interacted with. Gears 6 needs forced crossplay from the start, or else it will die off within a year again like 4 and 5. Gears does not have the population to support its game modes and a healthy player base for a sustained period of time with the pc and console communities split, console players have to get over it, ultimatley they will and theyll continue to play, and I hope the coalition realises this for gears 6.

Some other things Id want added are a new game mode that takes advantage of the gears universe, some massive multiplayer game mode, 10v10 20v20 or so with various cog vehicles, massive maps, bigger locust to play as, even bosses like Raam to play as/with. The maps could be set during various events from the games/lore like Hollow storm etc. The other thing is beast mode from gears 3, Id love this mode to return, either as locust or swarm i honestly wouldnt mind I just want it back. The last thing is hope the devs actually learn from 5s mistakes, and dont spend the whole development cycle just making it the same game as 4 and 5 were by the end of their support.

Ultimatley Gears 5 is solid and Id recommend if your interested in the Campaigns and the extra pve modes. The multiplayer is fine, however its relativley dead,
