Guacamelee is my first 2D platform combat game. The combat system is beginner-friendly, and all the key bindings are set in the correct place. You can utilize specials attack and primary attack to perform some sick-looking moves, and you can see how Lucha Libre influences within the game. However, the level of difficulty can escalate quickly if you want to get 100% achievements. Some of these achievements really made me want to pull my hair out.

You can see the developer pour their heart out for this game. The game graphic is enjoyable, it uses a vibrant color theme rather than realistic, which effortless ties with the Lucha Libre background. Lastly, there are so many silly jokes hidden in the game for you to discover as well.

I highly recommend this game to anyone, whether you are or are not a fan of 2D combat, this game might be just the right fit for you.

Controls can be frustrating sometimes, but overall this is a very enjoyable game with a great art style and really fun combat. Would definitely recommend if you like platforming, close quarters fighting, and/or metroidvania-type exploration. A very solid indie game.

Very fun and colorful brawler/metroidvania fusion well-polished movement and combat, with a ton of colour and personality owing to the authentic Mexican background and culture. An exciting but humourous and light-hearted story of love, bravery and heroism. Couldn't help but play through to the very end and seek out everything that the game had to offer.

Also, the game has the best chicken powerup out of any game I've played. It made me hungry for spicy hot chicken wings.

An interesting 2D (action) platformer. It introduces new mechanics and concepts regularly, which expands the gameplay. From unexpected abilities that allow you to traverse the map in interesting ways, to enhancements to your enemies. I don't know if I'd go as far to call this a metroidvania. I guess it qualifies, but an important aspect of that genre is the exploration of your environment and the eventual discover of the way to go. In Guacamelee there's always a marker pointing you in the right direction when you open the map, so that sense of discovery is lost. On the other hand each area of the map is so big and takes so long to traverse that it could easily become frustrating without that.

The highlight to me is clearly the combat, specifically the bosses. Fighting the jaguar guy on hard difficulty has been one of the most fun experiences I've had lately. Similarly, the rest of the bosses required some practice, and while I found myself dying often it was an enjoyable experience to eventually overcome. Outside of the bosses the combat is still quite engaging. Enemies acquire new abilities as you progress, which will require you to perform the correct action to disable them. When you have to fight multiple types of enemies, protected by different effects it can lead to a fun chaotic battle where you find yourself constantly dodging and jumping while keeping your combo active.

The platforming was basic but fun, some sections surprised me in terms of difficulty and what's required of you. Looking back my favourite aspect of the platforming is probably the black and red thorns which require you to roll or dodge in mid air. Your character controls and feels heavy, as it takes a bit of time for him to turn back in mid air. That's why I found a certain power-up way more enjoyable than the default character.
And that's the chicken which controls very fast and honestly I'd love to play a whole game as him.

I have mixed feelings when it comes to the visuals. When you're inside temples and areas with walls in the background it looks detailed and good. But outside of those instances the game is kind of empty and flat looking despite its colourful tone. It reminds of Super Meat Boy in the sense that it has a flash art style look to it, but unlike SMB the camera is too close to the character most of the time, which does the game a disservice when it comes to visuals.
While I didn't enjoy the look of the environments that much, I'll say that the character models look quite good and I was reminded of Disney's Aladdin at times for some reason.

I found myself skipping through the dialogue since I just wanted to play the game. I caught glimpses of the story and some references to Super Mario Bros among other games. I'd prefer to be able skip the entire of the dialogue with a simple click, like you do in Celeste, but it's still not too bad.

I found the game to be surprisingly enjoyable and I wouldn't mind purchasing the STC edition down the road to play it again.

This game has fantastic energy -- dynamic combat, vibrant colors, goofy dialogue, and a soundtrack that spans two worlds. It's very linear for a metroidvania (especially after Hollow Knight) but it suits gameplay. I played through most of the game as a sexy chicken lady, which was just the cherry on top.

With that said, USE A CONTROLLER (if possible) because the keyboard controls suck. Even the game admits this. I actually couldn't beat the final boss just because it required pressing a ton of buttons in rapid succession as you figure out the next boss move -- really unfortunate since I'm sure I could have beaten him if I had a controller. 8/10

Guacamelee is pretty goddamn solid. The visual style is distinct, the animation is nice, and the story is pretty fun and lighthearted, and it's all around a pleasant experience. For a metroidvania, it's also pretty clear on where you need to go and is rarely confusing.

This game is a fun and clever platform puzzler that uses twitch reflexes. Highly recommended that you get yourself to the Mexiverse and have a Lucha or dos!

A bite sized Metroidvania! Guacamelee is pretty great. I happen to love the Drinkbox "house style" and this game uses it very well. Lovely 2d graphics and backgrounds.

Guacamelee is a combat focused Metroidvania, that can be beat in 4-5 hours on your first runthrough. It's not a bad thing though, you get many of the joys of a metroidvania without a lot of the padding or backtracking.

This game is combat focused, and the combat is pretty good. You don't have a ton of moves at your disposal, but what you do have is effective, and more importantly, fun. You are given a strong dodge move, which gave the developers more freedom in making the combat difficult and exciting. Sometimes there are a bunch of enemies with shields that need to be broken by certain special moves, and some will be in real world and some will be in the dark world and it will be too much and you will take some cheap damage. That is my only complaint with the combat.

There are some sidequests and some arena stuff, but i think I am going to skip it and head on to the sequel. I enjoyed my (brief) time with Guacamelee!

The Noble Cause
The Noble Cause

this is a middle thumb.

+ some charming dialogue and characters
+ cute aesthetics
+ easy to pick up and play

- music gets tedious
- controls sometimes feel clunky, it's not like hollowknight
- the game mechanics are somewhat limited, and the unlocks don't really boost your abilities, a lot of it is traversal abilities so it feels really gate-keepy
- there's a lot of backtracking as you unlock abilities, and it starts to get tedious by the 4 hour mark (where i stopped playing)

Metroidvania with interesting art style and good gameplay. You can travel between dimensions to overcome obstacles. There are great enemy fights with a good amount of special moves which you must use to defeat some of them. There's a decent amount of backtracking like it should be in this genre, but it doesn't get tiring. It is reasonably hard not counting the final boss fight and one particular optional tree climbing challenge that you need for final power up - these are pure hell and both of them even make comeback in the sequel, but here they are still the hardest. Wherever you go you are accompanied by neat soundtrack. I recommend gold edition over superchampion-whatever because even though you fell the next was more polished it added a mechanic where some enemies can't be dodged by dodging move and it just pissed me off. Other than that it is a great game with great sequel and it plays fantastic with game controllers.

After being successfully explored in earlier games, DrinkBox offers us their own take on the Latin American culture and comes up with a solid production while also starting their own franchise.

- Graphism -
The inspired artistic direction is served by warm color palettes, smooth character animations and a somewhat papercraft aesthetic reminiscent of a TV cartoon and high quality Flash productions.

- Gameplay -
You quickly have to master each ability earned if you want to complete the challenging platform sequences and overwhelming fights which will eventually follow. Your skills will definitely be put to the test.

- Story -
If the plot isn't groundbreaking by any means, the colorful characters you'll encounter during your adventure, as well as the omnipresent humour and references, make interacting worth your time.

- Sound -
Latin music is cleverly mixed with Chiptune sounds and dynamically changes as you swap dimension. SFX work satisfyingly well in their context and help create a believable world to explore.

- Replay Value -
Approximately fifteen hours are necessary to complete the adventure and unlock every remaining achievement. You might come back for speedrun purposes if the difficulty didn't turn you off.

A solid entry in the Metroidvania genre with a well-balanced mix of fighting and platforming sequences. Worth giving a shot but beware of the brutal and frustrating difficulty spikes.

I got this game expecting to never play it
More like a nice addition to my library than really anything else.
Give it a try but seemed like the type of game I wasn't interested in.
Clearly it takes from Mexican culture,
Which was definitely a plus in my book.
Exploring and learning about different cultures without feeling like you're being forced to learn about them Is the best way to learn and understand people better.
In the end this game was fun enjoyable and didn't feel like it was a copy paste Metroidvania.
Guacamelee has its own place in the Metroidvania genre and is a definite recommendation.

As a lover of most Metroidvanias, I went back to play this game for the first time this year. I will say, its combat is exciting, the humor hits more often than not, the art style is very charming and full of life, and the references... are about the worst part of the game.

Guacamelee wears its inspirations on its sleeve, so I don't mind those. It's when I go through the main hub town and see many mid-2010's memes and find myself fighting to roll my eyes. They certainly weren't a deal breaker and I still highly recommend the game, especially if you're fond of a meme time-capsule.

Guacamelee was so much more influential that I realised. It helped revive the genre and you can see where other metroidvanias took inspiration. The game is incredibly stylised while still having a bunch of substance. The combat is satisfying and the unlockable abilities are wacky and unique. The level design is top-notch for the most part and the puzzle platforming makes up for the weaker movement.

Don't expect it to be an open metroidvania as you'll be very disappointed. I personally like this as it appeals to all players. There is no required backtracking for those who like linear games, however those who want to explore will be rewarded greatly. The game is very short so buy it when it's on offer.

This game was fun and engaging till the very end. I recommend you try this if you are looking for a fun metroidvania with a lot of puns. My only dislike is the single file save, but I wouldn't let that stop me from buying this.

Original review: Great game. I love the luchador theme and attack combos.

Update: My initial review did not do this game justice. To say I enjoy the luchador theme and attack combos is an understatement. The game is not only enjoyable to play, but quite creative in it's artistic renditions and character depictions. If nothing else, this game serves as an interesting ode to lucha libre, mariachi and Dia del los Muertos elements of Mexican culture. The lighthearted theme and quirky (if not out-right corny) humor do not take away from the game play and- surprisingly- are not an indication of the game's difficulty. In one moment I find myself laughing at the humorous commentary and in the next, frustrated as I have failed to scale the Tule tree yet again. And for those who do find the difficulty on the easier side, the game can be played in "hard mode once beaten...or before that if you know the cheat ;) For those who find the difficulty too challenging, I might suggest the Super Turbo Championship Edition of the game which- besides offering some extended game play options- is designed to be a little easier. I've heard from many others that there is a lot of overlap between the two, so I wouldn't recommend buying both unless you REALLY love the game. I do think an easy mode and a few DLCs to expand game play for all difficulty levels would have been a better option than essentially recreating the same game in the STC Edition.

And then there are the attack combos which provide you with plenty of fun ways to demise your foes. I came to appreciate the game itself as a bit of a tutorial on using these special combos in unique ways: via level design and in-game practice on "Poncho".

Overall, Guacamelee is a unique and interesting game, worth the money.

Probably my favorite part about the whole thing is the platforming, it delivers a wonderful sensation once all the button sequence is followed through neatly and gracefully. The rewarding system is much tbh but overcoming a seemingly impossible jump at first sight was enough of a reward for me.

The story is nice yet it feels optional not an integral part of how the game progresses.

The art style is a huge dub and the combo moves along with the hidden power ups keeps you engaged.

Favorite character is the goat WHAT A WASTE.
Finally the game is Worth Your Time.

This is really one of those games that feels odd in a few ways in terms of both how it's perceived and also how it portrays itself. First and foremost is the way that despite being touted as such a strong metroidvania experience despite not really strongly embodying a lot of the core traits that form the distinct experience that come with the genre, instead often relying on surface level comparisons without quite understanding the deeper elements of what make them work so well. A similar statement could honestly be said to the game as a whole, taking so many skeletons of ideas and implementing them in an extremely barebones, surface level way that can often feel more like a series of nods to various pastiches and series rather than its own distinct entity. Despite this however, I ended up overlooking a lot of it while playing Guacamelee, because while it might falter in a number of areas, it's often really fun to play nonetheless.

I feel that a lot of the fun this game has to offer can be found in its combat encounters and the way a lot of focus was given to make it feel as good as possible. The player might only have a few simplistic moves, but not only has everything mostly been designed to transition into all of the others smoothly, allowing the player to rack up huge combos, but every attack feels extraordinarily weighty, with this loud, bassy thump with each instance of contact made even more satisfying by how time even very subtly slows down during impact to add that extra something. This makes what is often a rather simple game in how the player approaches each encounter still feel decently engaging, which is fortunate because in a lot of ways, this game really feels a bit lackluster and is only saved by how it looks and feels in my eyes, even if these aspects are mostly handled amazingly.

While the combat might feel good, I felt like the encounter design itself felt EXTREMELY economical and rigid in how it was approached, enemies usually only having one valid way of beating them or just being damage sponges without really anything in between to lead to more dynamic action. Enemies usually have one weakness and essentially require you to exploit it, but often it's done in ways that feel very forced and cheap, especially with the yellow skeletons and the way they want you to knock them up in the air. Rather than simply being far more difficult to beat on the ground, it feels more like these enemies instantly dodge after you try hitting them a couple of times and then strike back before this pattern repeats. Not only does this make them feel very formulaic, knowing that you essentially have to play things exactly as the game wants or be subjected to something really frustrating and tedious. If instead, these enemies simply were very agile and unpredictable on the ground, this would not only provide a less intrusive method of guiding the player towards an intended solution, but it would provide more player agency by making it feel less as if the game is cheating you to force your hand.

While enemy design like this is present all over the game, it's really when the elemental shields that can only be broken by one specific attack come in that my issues with how the game handles encounters hit their worst. Integrating such an artificial way of having to deal with enemies using your arsenal significantly cheapens the experience from my perspective by not only further removing a sense of player agency, but by then utilising it in such a blatantly "gamey" way. I feel like simply colour coding special enemy behaviours could have had similar effects while providing a more dynamic, interesting element to the enemy design to bring it up to that next level. Aesthetically I also think this game works amazingly for the most part, with its cartoony atmosphere and its evocative setting both creating a game that looks and feels like no other that I've played, further backed up by that Mariachi style soundtrack to seal the deal. The issue mainly comes from the fact that while on one hand, the game handles its setting well, it then will fall extremely short through the sheer amount of times a hollow reference will be made or a meme is used, which took me out of the experience a few times when I saw stuff like "me gusta guavas" and one of the main villains going "trolololololo". It's honestly the game references that annoy me more however due to the way it almost feels as if the game is trying to say "hey, we're kinda like this game" while showing off the most simplistic, surface level comparisons like "we have powerups and gated progression too!!!".

Drive to explore the world was also very hit or miss due to the way that exploration felt so artificially gated yet again, with colour coded blocks that usually only led to a room with a treasure chest anyway. There was very little drive to actually go back and explore, not only because of the map system shouting at the right direction for the player to go, preventing a more natural sense of exploration to be found, but also that any extra loot you'd find was either a health upgrade, stamina upgrade, or money, none of which are things that mattered for the most part due to how easy the game was for the most part, deemphasising the significance of upgrades purely made for your ease of survival. The way the story and objectives were framed was also really off, with these long stretches where it felt as if the game was building up to an encounter only to go off on a tangent and kill all feeling of suspense, which ended up leading to half the game feeling like a frustrating struggle to have literally anything happen, while the 2nd half was a nonstop, anticlimactic beatdown of all the villains while you kept getting told that the main antagonist had already gone somewhere else. It sometimes felt extremely hard to get at all invested in a narrative that was paced as poorly as this.

It's a pretty big testament to how good this game actually feels to play that I had so many issues with it on such a wide array of fronts and still ended up enjoying it quite as much as I did however, as while this is in a lot of ways, a rather barebones experience that doesn't really try doing anything that impresses or excited me all that much, it's still a pretty great time if you go through it as you would a typical 2D action platformer game. The game just, FEELS great to play in a lot of respects and is also short enough to have been worth it without really wearing out its welcome either. Despite the complaints I might have made, this is totally worth getting and is probably something that a lot of other people would enjoy a bit more than me as well, I just get that vibe from this.

Un juego que da mucho y pide poco.
Historia simple pero divertida, gameplay sencillo pero entretenido, escenarios muy coloridos, jefes finales y puzzels en momentos desafiantes pero nada que no se pueda pasar después de unos cuantos intentos. I played Guacamelee 2 before I played this, and it did not disappoint. The pacing between getting the power-ups could be a bit spread out since you do get everything but 1 power-up in around the same area. Other than that it's goofy and fun!

This is a hidden gem of a game. The combat's smooth, the bosses are hard yet don't feel unfair, the characters are really really unique and memorable. "There's a lot of outdated memes in the game, which ruins the vibe the game is going for" is what I would say, if the sequel didn't act self aware and add an area that mocks the reviews that criticize this fact. Anyhow,
great combat, memorable characters, insanely well made music and some dumb jokes is what this game contains, and nothing does all of these combined better.

Stylish platformer. However, too high difficulty ruins everything. Also, control is disgusting. The plot is absent. The cooperative mode is made purely to be - there are no additional features, and the players only interfere with each other.

Awesome Brawler. Haven't tried the multiplayer, but the single player is an excellent blend of puzzle and challenging fight rooms. Game could stand to be a little bit harder, but there are ways to make it more challenging for yourself such as not purchasing any upgrades during your playthrough.

Very fun jump and run, with satisfying (and sometimes challanging) fighting gampleplay.
Not to mention the amazing soundtrack that I listen to regularly.
I would compare it mostly with Ori and the Blind Forest, just with a lot more humor and a simpler visual style.
Also very fun with a friend in CoOp.
The game itself is not too long (You can finish it in under 5 hours), but there are many hidden areas that can stretch that out to 10-15 hours.
Recommended for people who enjoy platformers with a little action.

TLDR: Short, fun platformer (similar to Ori and theh Blind Forest) with lots of humor and a great soundrack.

Its a very fun game. It gradually becomes more difficult especially towards the endgame, it starts out easy but then the training wheels are just melted off. This is definitely a game that you have to get gud at in order to beat it. A fun metroidvania beat em up, with a great setting and soundtrack. The secrets were really fun to get, and El Infierno felt like a challenge to get all gold medals in. There were some glitches though, one where my camera stayed in the previous room but the character didn't, and one where I went too fast through a screen transition and my processor crashed, leading to me having to reset the computer. (Got 100% achievements in 26 hours, all of which I enjoyed, one thing though - if you want to go for 100% completion, please read the achievements first as at least one of them can only be done once per playthrough and you can miss out on it [for anyone wondering, it's the one for beating Caverna Del Pollo with the skeleton skin]). Would absolutely recommend this game, especially with the low pricetag! And if this seems like your type of game, I recommend buying it in the bundle with SuperTurbo Championship edition and the soundtrack, as it is veryyy cheap, especially on sale.
