This is THE definitive steam game. When you think of steam games, this should pop into your head. Gordon Freeman/10

Almost 18 years later, and it still holds up better than a lot of games today. If you are on the fence about getting this, my advice would be just get it, you won't regret it, and for 11 bucks you cold do a LOT worse.

If you like aiming with guns, this game is 1/11 for you. If you like alt fires, this game is 3/11 for you. Brilliant game! Seamlessly blends FPS elements with story ones. You can have your fun explosions and reckless bloodshed, and you can cry at the ending and hopelessly hope that HL3 will come out.

Also one of the best shotgun hitsounds ever! Very meaty. Very satisfying. Very nice.

ahh, a fuckin classic, now, as of writing, I don't have to much time on this version, but in total, I probably have about 100 hours on this game. this game is just a masterpiece, from an amazing story, to fun gunplay, to a totally not busted movement system allowing for near infinite speed (it totally has that and I love it), this game is a testament to games as an art form, being able to stand for almost 20 years and holding up amazingly. so for those new and old, may we all celebrate a near perfect game, and don't forget to rise and shine

Haven't played the Half-Life 2 games as much as Half-Life, but it's absolute classic!
Sadly VALVe stopped making games and that there's no updates in regards to Half-Life 3. GabeN has a true talent in developing games, yet it's like he feels afraid to ruin his reputation. If we live to see Half-Life 3 done by GabeN/VALVe, I'm sure it will be the best game of it's era.

It's a great game for how old it is. If you have 4$ to spear buy Half Life 2, it's gonna be a great investment.

What can I say about one of the best games ever made?

I was just going to test my new PC, installed the game, ran it, and then there I was once again... living Gordon Freeman's story for the 500th time, I guess.

This game is one of those franchises you finish for a lot of times and you still read about on the wiki to find out more and more!

Such a gem! Runs exceptionally well on the Steam Deck! Controls work very well and the game is smooth as butter for the most part. Touch pad helps for accurate shooting. The story, graphics, and gameplay hold up so well to this day. This game hasn't aged one bit!

normally, I would call this game a generic shooter. But I had a lot of fun playing this, and is actually really REALLY good. especially for the early 2000s. Half-Life 2 is a masterpiece FPS that combines a captivating universe with engaging level design and puzzles. The game has aged incredibly well and remains completely playable today so there should be no hesitation to enjoying one of the greatest games of all time!

Half-Life 2 is one of those titles which many might've heard of once in their lifes, if they have had at least access to the internet. For me personally, I always wanted to play Half-Life 2 ever since I was a small little gremlin playing minecraft on my shitty laptop with a solid framerate of 20-30 fps. So, years later, I have now gotten every achievement in the game and have managed to put out over 40+ hours into the game. What do I think?
HL2 is definitely a game that lives up to what people usually say about it. The game is something you should definitely experience if you're up for a fun shooter-dooter with a gravitational-twist. No matter how many times I replay this game, I always find something to laugh about it. Per say some funny bug or an encounter I have with a combine soldier. The magic of ragdoll physics for one.
The game mechanics are simple, and yet sufficient to everything that you will do. You can point and click, or do the sickest shit with the gravity gun. It's simple fun that only your mind can limit.
Now, what do I think of the content? The maps for one? I think the chapters are fun, some full of little secrets that you can pick out if you're a nosy person, like me. The game really introduces everything perfectly within some chapters, and lets you use things to their full potential.
The story itself was alright, I find it simple to understand, yet from time to time I felt like the pacing was a little too slow but it was manageable. There are however some things in the game that kind of soft-locked me in every now and then, like objects putting my jeep into a of death-spot, or me falling into my death every time I started loading my autosave. However, some of the bugs in the game, or the glitches can be pretty fun, too. For example, accelerated backhopping. One of the best things in this game. It is risky, deadly but god is it fun. I skipped many sections with it, bugged myself into spots with it, but come on. What can I expect from using a unintended feature? :D Or the fact that you can use objects to levitate/fly with. Both are good for speedrunning and legitimately make the game stand out.
In summary, Half-Life 2 is a great first-person-shooter with a twist to itself. I definitely will revisit this game from time to time to really mess about with its features and bugs.

Absolute masterpiece

Sometimes certain gameplay elements overstay their welcome, namely the absurdly long car part, but it is a fun and engaging experience throughout and I never got overly frustrated while playing like I did a few times during HL1

ive played this game longer than it says i have. played it all the time on console growing up and as a kid. this game is so great and i adore it to bits.

pains me to think of today's generation of children who have not even heard of this magnificent game and everything else that stemmed from it

I am a 50 year old father, probably one of the oldest people playing this game. I am a single father to my son, who is now 14. My son recently started half life 2 and in less than a week, he had already played for over 20 hours. This was terrible for me, as it was already hard enough for me to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his friends or just watching videos on Tiktok. So i decided to make a Steam account and download this game to see if I could maybe play alongside him. I loaded into the game, looked at the menu, but I was stuck on what you where supposed to do. I asked my Son for help and he hosted a game for me to join. I loved it as it was the best time I had spent with my Son since my wife had died. This game has ever since brought my son and I closer again and now we actually spend time together outside the house as well. This game reminded me that there's fun to be had in everything, and it has brought both me and my Son many happy memories.

For someone who uses a non gaming laptop like myself this is the best game you could ever play, even with the graphics and model detail on High it still reaches 50-60 fps [on my laptop] as for the episodic games, Ep1 reaches about 45-55 fps and for Ep2 it reaches about 43-52 fps [again on my laptop] As for how to buy it, you should definitely buy with the Orange Box. The game as of me writing this is still one of my favorite games to revisit when bored and i hope the Half-life franchise gets more games in the future. Thank you Valve for making me not regret buying this game.

18 years on, and still a classic game with a compelling story, and smooth gameplay, that easily holds up to today. Not necessarily in the graphics department, but it's still pretty good.
Half-Life 2 is "Overwhelmingly Positive" for a reason, you should give it a try.

18 years after it's release, I finally spent 22 hours playing through this game, start to finish. What the hell can I say about it?

Well... it's great, obviously. But I still expected more. What could that be? Well... more toward the end-game. I played through the entire game on Hard difficulty, and the most memorable and challenging moments are found in the earlier chapters of the game.

By the game's midpoint, the difficulty curve has flattened out, and the challenge in terms of enemies you face and the level design seem to lose steam... get it?

Sorry. What I'm trying to say is that the later parts of the game don't introduce any new mechanics, enemies, weapons, or platforming elements... with all the twists and turns that result in a sense of exploration and discovery during the first few chapters of the game, the later stages feel like a slog. Not necessarily easy, but it's a very different kind of challenge compared to the later stages of HL1.

SPOILER ALERT: For example, the final stages inside the Citadel are a total gimme. The overcharged gravity gun is really fun to use, but besides the visuals, level design is super bland, and forego a lot of opportunity to ramp things up with the physics-based mayhem you encounter in the game's first moments. You even see a couple new types of Combine enemy in your "tour" through the Citadel, but you never actually fight them. I shoved energy balls into a portal/reactor thingy while barely having to dodge enemy gunships, and won the game on my first playthrough. Nothing compared to fighting Nihilanth.

Anyways this review is for anybody who hasn't already played, or completed this game. If you're interested in the series, definitely give it a go.

While I do like this game I do have a few problems with it. First I feel like the story was a major downgrade from the first game mainly because a lot of it relies on exposition and characters just blatantly telling you were to go, second the first two acts of the game are really good but the third act is a complete mess, with every single level forcing you to defend a character from braindead AI and having a really unstisfying ending. This game's strengths rely purely on it's 1st half while the 2nd half is just mediocre at best.

One of the best single player story games I've played. The sad thing is that there hasn't been news of a Half-Life: 3 game ever, not including Half-Life: Alyx.

Graphics and gameplay still hold up even though the game is 18 years old. I personally dislike parts of the game where theres no clear path, and in one instance i ended up wandering around for 30 minutes until i realized that one of the rebels saying "Freeman! Head for the horse!" actually meant go towards a literal statue of a horse. I was so confused , he just kept saying "Freeman! Head for the horse!". I almost cried. "WHAT DO YOU MEAN HEAD FOR THE HORSE" "PLEASE LET ME LEAVE ITS BEEN 15 DAYS IM STARVING".

All jokes aside, awesome game. Runs perfectly of most systems, even thinkpad's built in 1792 running Windows 3.1 could probably run this game.

For a game from 2004, it really does hold up. It is a great successor for the previous game, and the world and environments are so interesting and immersive. I rather liked the head scratching puzzles, and while the combat did feel a little clunky and was missing some features I was more accustomed to in other games it was easy enough to get a handle on an even somewhat master. If you're gonna buy this game, I recommend getting it with some of the others games in a bundle especially on a sale because that's a great way to really dive into the series without spending much cash.

It is very good game and i recommend other people to play it. Engine has very good graphics, story is perfect and has a lot of lore behind. Game has very big amount of details, physics are realistic and it is sometimes dark.

A forgotten story that's better than any modern dystopian alien tale.

Whats not to like? Half Life and all the following episodes was and still is the pioneer of immersive world play genre styled gaming. Detailed and explorable on a level that is hard to find today. Valve set the bar many years ago and i've yet to see an equal platform. Much respect to the Valve development team. I challenge anybody who can only play though all episodes just once!

Half-Life 2 is one of the greatest video games for a good reason. It's amazing story, heavy action game play, graphics that were out of this world for a 2004 game, the impressive physics engine "source", and that it improves on the original game on every aspect (which was one of the best video games) were all what made and still make it into one of greatest video games ever. You definitely can make the argument that it's the greatest video game FPS ever. The only bad part about the game is the fact it ends. Half-life 2 is easily the greatest video game I have ever played so far in my life and I cannot fathom how another game will top it for me.

One of my all time favorites, great story and graphics for the time. It has good mechanics when it comes to game play.
I used Half-Life 2: Update and MMOD during this playthrough, it adds changes to the lighting, bug fixes and overall made the game more immersive. If you haven't played HL2 before I would 110% recommend it. I wish I could go back an experience it for the first time again.

An amazing classic thats STILL great to play in 2022!!!

It's a great game but Steam needs to fix the issue with the game not starting. A bunch of people in community are complaining about it. So right now, hl2, e1 and e2 won't start anymore.

My first experience with Half-Life 2 was on the Xbox 360 with the Orange Box. I loved and completed Portal and played Team Fortress 2 with my friends quite often, but somehow never got into playing Half-Life 2. I tried starting the game multiple times but never got into it. Years later and a new PC, I decided to buy the Half-Life bundle. I decided about 2 weeks(ish) ago that I was going to complete every Half-Life game. Half-Life 1 and the expansion packs were pretty good, but when I started Half-Life 2 again, it was different... in a good way. It went from a shooter game with a simple story, to an exploration shooter with a very different but fascinating story with great characters. You can tell that the developers did not want to be bound down by the previous game and wanted to try something new with the Half-Life franchise. I really enjoyed playing this game and I cannot wait to complete Episode 1 and Episode 2.

This is probably my favourite ever FPS...certainly n my top 5. I played this back when the Orange Box was released and still sticks in the memory.
It has stood the test of time and still as playable as it was 18 years ago (incidently this was released in the greatest game release month all time, Nov 2004 was stacked top to bottom, google it if you don't believe me)

This has Great varied environments, great weapon variation, good pacing and does few things wrong.
The only complaints i have is at times no map marker can be a pain and tough to work out where to go (Although no where near as big an issue as Black Mesa)
The save system can also be troublesome as there were a few occasions where the auto save was rendered useless as I would be in a position of instant death or with next to zero health therefore i would save often if i were you.

On the whole I enjoyed replaying Half Life 2 and it dereves it's place in gaming folklore,

In the end, does it even matter?

The protagonist's voice actor did an excelent job

for me personally i like but for other people may be very disturbing because of the fact some buildings are soviet building and they are very depressing and ugly looking things. i mean if you're not from eastern europe this game may be depressing for you and you will probably attempt suicide after playing for more than 20 hours non-stop and don't do it if you're not from eastern europe, i am from Checnya and this game fells fun and good looking and relaxing game. I recommend it tottaly from personal point of view but i warn you its not for photoepylepsyc people because when you shoot the gun it flashes and may damage your mental health :D :( :D :( :D :( :D :( yes yes play it forever non-stop until the world colapses

What is there that hasn't been said, The HOLE Half Life Series is amazing and this sequel to an already great existing game is amazing, the graphics for a 2004 game are way ahead of its time, if you are looking into buying this, I 100% recommend it too whoever is reading this, and thank you :)

Waiting For The Half Life 3 With Better Graphics!

Half-Life 2 is or is one of the best games ever made. It is a first person shooter game that emphasizes physics and interactivity without taking control away from the player. And that's just describing the gameplay. One of the best things about the game is the story it tells. In this game you are Gordon Freeman a Black Mesa Scientist from the first game in the series.

So, if you played the first you will love it even more! Even though this game was made in 2004 it still holds up to this day due to it's innovative gameplay and interesting story that will make science fiction fans and fps enjoyers satisfied. So, get this game if you like playing gaming history and an interesting story!
