The first few levels are fun. But then you hit a point where the bosses kill you when they so much as graze you, which is unavoidable because your tank always moves in the direction you're shooting. So you lose all the nukes you saved up and quickly lose the game. Of all the PopCap games I've been revisiting from my youth, this has been the weakest.

This PC port of Heavy Weapon which I've first played on the Xbox 360 back in the day is okay but there are a lot of minor issues this port has. Controls are REALLY BAD as in movement is tied to aiming the crosshair at enemies, meaning trying to take down those ground units like the bulldozers can be a pain in the arse as you have to try to destroy that thing while dodging bombs and projectiles. It also applies on specific boss fights like the H-Bot and the wrecking ball which makes these bosses alone cancer to fight against due to these controls. There is no multiplayer survival or local CO-OP features like what the console versions had. Boss blitz is absent from this port which is pretty disappointing. There are only 2 modes which is the campaign and survival mode. Unfortunately you cannot replay missions on this port after beating the game so it resets you back to the beginning. Survival mode is pretty lacking as you're just being timed rather than getting a high score I'd honestly prefer score attack than a timed gameplay or just have both why the hell not? I would wish to give this game a mixed review rather than a positive review but I mean it's got it's positives if you're a sucker for the nostalgia. I did get some worth out of the 5 bucks I spent on this half assed port. I'd honestly recommend sticking with console versions of this game tbh unless you really want to relive the nostalgia for whatever reason.

One of PopCap's more unique games with an arcade feel. Initially I loved it, it was fun and games until it wasn't and just got frustrating. Gameplay is literally 1.5 dimensional, move your tank on the bottom and shoot the enemies, that's all. This game has a lot of enemies and you'll learn quickly to hate ALL of them. Personally that damned missile truck and just about anything involving missiles are just the worst, they have very irregular patterns and almost always end up damaging my shield. Beyond this I'd prefer not to go on a lengthy diatribe about how much I hate the missile truck, because this is a review and not a hate post. On that note don't count on the helicopter that gives you power-ups to have your best interests in mind, it may very well be the worst enemy in game.

Apart from these you may find the game ramps up difficulty in mission mode where you get a whole TWO LIVES to complete each mission. Of course you get unlimited continues but it just feels so lacking. At least in danmaku games you can get extra lives.

As for my own recommendation for this game I would say it is definitely worth the price of 5 dollars given how much of a challenge it can be when it isn't frustrating. I'd give this a 6/10 It'd be 5 if the music wasn't as good as it is (Especially the in-game track which just slaps.).

I will still recommend it. It's a great game. However...
I'm used to playing the Xbox 360 version which has more features and better controls, so while I am immensely disappointed by this version, I do understand this is the original PC release rather than the one I'm used to.

There are two modes, the Campaign and the Survival mode, both are a ton of fun and very challenging.

I was cool with a lot of the multiplayer options not being here, because I doubt I'd get anyone to play in 2022, but what I'm not okay with is the broken controls (in my opinion).

In this version, the mouse controls everything: your movement, the direction of which you fire, and your bombs. This may seem fine, but it very quickly becomes an issue as early as stage 2. As soon as you have to start dealing with ground enemies, you'll find yourself having to run all the way across the screen neglecting enemies firing from above, which is an awful position to be in.
Bosses also become a massive issue with this.

For comparison's sake, the 360 version allows you to move with one joystick and fire with another. This makes the game feel infinitely more smooth and makes dodging enemy fire so much easier, which is important for this type of game.

Back in the day I was able to beat the entire game and get all the upgrades in survival. In this version, I'm struggling to get past stage 3.

Again, I'll recommend it if you haven't played the 360 version, but if you have, you probably want to stay away.

Gnocchizeme
Gnocchizeme

Heavy Weapons is a side scrolling shmup with numerous weapon upgrades and a high enemy variety for a game of its length, though it lazily copies Ghosts 'n Goblins by repeating levels. If you find the "tank controls" bizarre, aim the reticle at the ground near the tank to stop movement.

ChillyPotPie
ChillyPotPie

Played this game a ton on the PS3 as a kid, but honestly would fully recommend this game even without the nostalgia as I believe it still holds up quite well. If you enjoy arcade style 2d shooter games then you will love this. It has a campaign mode with 19(!) missions and a ton of different upgrades allowing for slight replayability due to altered playstyles early on based on which upgrades you choose. Also has a boss blitz mode after beating the campaign if you just want to fight the bosses.

Only minor complaint with the Steam/PC release in particular is that there is no multiplayer functionality, not even local multiplayer so tools like Parsec cannot be used. This was upsetting to discover as playing the campaign in 2 player is the main thing I wanted to do, but I still love the game alone

Amazing game made by PopCap. it isnt long in length. there are two modes, the main campaign and an infinite run mode where you play until you get killed once. both are very fun and solid experiences. the game is very challenging but you will surely have fun. Heavy Weapon might be near the top with Plants vs. Zombies.

It was a fun game on xbox 360. but the port is terrible. I had loads of trouble getting it to even keep the game fullscreen, it kept minimizing for some reason. In addition, as far as i can tell there is no controller support and the mouse controls don't even let you move your tank. it just moves in the way you aim.

Rawr the Dragon

Although this game is literally my childhood, which means extra nostalgia fuel for me, I know very well that version is inferior to the Xbox 360 one. It's missing multiplayer survival, which would be a big win to have this one game of steam, and (for the PC release), a proper setting to change the resolution. There is also some bugs with the audio, where if you lower the sound effects to 5%, they just don't work. But if you turn it beyond that, then it's really loud.

There are ways to get this Popcap classic out there but I would not recommend it at this price unless you want to play in low resolution and multiplayer-less. Still a fantastic game. Just a lot of issues in the modern day.

I just love this game. I remember downloading the demo this as a child and playing this for hours. Even though the game can be unvorgiving - it's still challenging fun! And probably the best thing about this game is the soundtrack! I love it! Years later and not playing it, I can still remember every single note combined with that griddy announcer "GET READY". This ist just pure nostalgia but I'd still recomennd it because it's such fun. It's simple, doesn't ake a lot of time, and it feels so satisfying!

TLDR: Enjoyable gameplay loop. Lacks resolution support. Control scheme integrates too many things. Action becomes too chaotic and imprecise at some point.

The issue with Heavy Weapons Deluxe is that you control movement of a tank on the ground and you shoot things at the same time.

While you can move with the keyboard, once you aim with a mouse, the tank will move in the direction it aims. Meanwhile you will get carpet bombed by waves coming constantly from left and right at variable speeds.

You will get insta-sniped out of existence and your only viable strategy is to try to hold some kind of middle lane, focus on dodging everything and hope to kill a few stragglers by accident.

You snowball powers. Over and over again until you reach the boss. The game encourages snowballing but you lose all nukes on death so thats a consideration.

In any case at some point the bullet patterns of foes get too saturated and you cannot isolate movement from aiming so you cannot lie in a safe window between patterns and shoot at something and reliably feel like you can do so without hitting a game over.

That is when the game loses some of its appeal. You still redistribute your points and retry latest levels but by a certain point the formula gets stale due to the design issues.

There are no proper resolutions support either.

Since you need to hold center lane and still shoot things you will constantly be jerking your mouse around to correct position then twitch aiming for a few seconds before jerking your hand back again due to the protagonist gliding away.
It almost feels like fly fishing and it is offputting and weird.

I would prefer to play Major Mayhem for my twitch shooting of this caliber.

I used to watch my brother play this game several years ago when i was little, I'm glad to be able to experience this game myself. My only complaint is that movement and aiming are both tied to the mouse, I would rather have movement use WASD so moving while aiming, or shooting ground objects without moving towards them would be easier. Other than that it's a great game that brings back great memories.

Man Nips
Man Nips

Classic gem of a game, really fun. Unfortunately the PC version of the game is severely lacking in options, even for 2006 standards. There are no control options; you move your tank by moving the mouse, and you aim by moving the mouse. You can see how this would cause issues... you can't move and aim independently. On later stages when things get hectic, it becomes almost impossible to complete them.

Get the game on one of the last-gen consoles where the controls are properly set up. It really is a fun game, but the PC version doesn't do it justice.

Fluxiey
Fluxiey

First and foremost: the game has a glaring issue with movement/aiming. You are unable to control your tank's movement separately. You always drive towards your crosshair. The lack of accurate control is very similar to the game 'QWOP': insanely frustrating.

Very oldschool, nostalgic game. It was kinda fun for half an hour, after that, the game simply became repetitive, tedious and frustrating; the game has not aged very well.

(P.S. Go to C:/Steam/steamapps/common/Heavy Weapons Deluxe/data and you'll be able to edit the health totals of all enemy targets, including bosses. You're also able to edit level-duration, that makes the game much, much less tedious)

Classic PopCap game. Big part of my childhood that I'll never forget. Great casual shoot-em-up variant. There are honestly some big issues with the game that I'll list below, but even with these issues I love the hell out of this game.

The issues:
-Obviously since this game is from 2006, the graphics are gonna be bad. The resolution is super low and the models for some bosses look like they're made of plastic.
-Very uncooperative with other windows. Attempting to tab in and out of the window will be a pain. Running the game in Windows compatibility mode doesn't help.
-The controls suck. The game was made for mouse and mouse only, so you can't easily shoot while staying still. It's possible, but precise.

This game proves that you don't need super high graphics to have an extremely-compelling experience. The gameplay is outstanding, and I hope this game gets a sequel in the near future.

The ps3/ xbox 360 version is more enjoyable because its in HD, can move the tank with the analog stick, and has multiplayer. I bought this one for the original soundtrack (the console remix is really good too) and to see how far I could get (I dont think its impossible to beat but moving and shooting with the mouse sucks)

Heavy Weapon is a great little game to waste time with. It has a fun but highly repetitive soundtrack, and pleasing cold-war theming.

My favorite aspect of the game is it's a zany combat. Although this also becomes a problem because it can be like keeping up with a caffeinated squirrel running down hill. I usually play it in short bursts because it can get a little bit OCD trying to shoot the enemies and dodge their bombs and rockets at the same time.

For $5 it's hard to go wrong. Go ahead and pick this up if you're a bit of a mini game aficionado!

Don’t bother buying on steam, just get it on Xbox. The Xbox version allows you to move and shoot separately, the steam edition movement and shoot are both bound to the mouse, making complex motion impossible. And complex motion is required to play correctly, unless you want to have a really bad time
Otherwise I’d definitely recommend the Xbox edition!

A classic from the old 360 days. This version however is far outdated and has issues. It does not recognize modern GPUs and tends to have output issues. Heavy Weapon is a very simple yet addicting game. It's got some notable flaws, but it's not a bad purchase, given its cost.

The game's biggest flaw is its controls; aiming and moving are both done with the mouse. This means that the tank will always be moving in the direction you aim, whether you want it to or not, which causes a lot of problems. For one, you have to take your aim off of said enemy in order to maneuver around it. Second, there are enemies that appear on the ground, so in order to aim at them you have to run straight at them. This can make certain levels feel pretty tedious.

I thought the game was pretty alright, all things considered. It's nothing groundbreaking, but I can't say it's bad. It is a five dollar re-release of a small game made in 2006, after all. There's only so much you can demand or expect from it.

Riffy

A nostalgic game. The last time I played this game was on a Windows XP, and it has always been great, even until now. The controls, however, only uses the mouse (i.e. aiming and movement are both done with the mouse simultaneously), so you might need to get used to it first before fully enjoying the experience. I believe the console port (Xbox, I believe) changes this characteristic, so buy this game in such console instead if you are more comfortable that way. Overall, the experience is smooth as expected. The controls, though may be tricky, have no issues at all. Survival mode makes this game still fun even if played repeatedly, despite the very steep difficulty spike once 7-10 minutes have elapsed. I truly recommend this lightweight, nostalgic, and enjoyable game.

Melon Sc//ence
Melon Sc//ence

It is fun alright, but also cheaply hard as well.

Only played through 8 missions and I could tell how bad the balance is:

1. They keep cramming in enemies while your fire power is not enough in terms of specific against those certain enemies.

1.5. This is a pitnick, but it is a legit one as well - you see in Plants vs Zombies you get to see all types of enemies in the level so that you pick plants accordingly. But here the weapon upgrades selection screen comes first before the briefing screen. And those enemy armor point intels mean meaningless if you can't even know how much do your guns deal. In fact you don't even know which upgrade is better at dealing which.

2. Some enemies are literally RNG like the Airships when exploded just sh*t random patterns of laser bullet, and they do cover a good range of the area.

3. The worst air and power supplies for a shoot'em up game. Sometimes they come often, other time just a dead long silent minutes of bombings without seeing the heli once. And there isn't even an extra life, meanwhile the later level is just tediously lengthy and 2 lives are not enough. In fact the spamming of the game is so cheap that they can just steal you 1 life when you just start the level in 2 seconds. And there is no separate reset button, that you have to go to the menu > exit > select the story > go through the upgrade screen > the briefing screen > now we are back to the le... oh yeah we just lose one life, not enough for the whole mission, lets restart.

4. The worst death penalty ever - if you lose your life once all your nukes, your laser parts collected from before just reset. Who the f*ck think of this? I mean WHO THE F*CK THINK OF THIS?

5. And you can't even control when to shoot meglaser or not, once all parts collected it just goes on and depletes automatically leaving you hardly any smart strategy to use it. Even worse is that enemy number just got "naturally" decreased a lot during this too.

6. And the spamming of one-hit enemies from level 8 onwards. Well if it is just a matter of dodging their bullets then I can somewhat try to squeeze through/endure it. But a bullet that insta-kill you even when you are not hit? Because it nukes the whole playing field? Yeah that's really f*cking fair.

7. Last thing, but the most important thing of all things, you know when it comes to a bullet-hell game, "precise" control is a must no? But here you have no precise one because somebody thought it was a BLOODY GOOD OF AN IDEA... or they just forgot how to do keyboard and mouse control... that YOU CANNOT SHOOT AND MOVE SEPARATELY!!! Wherever your aiming cursor is the tank moves toward it. And because of this you can't precisely dodge things you don't want and aim at things you want - like those nuke bombs! Or simply you just don't want your tank to not f*cking move even once!

Phew... okay... calm down, where was I? All of those points above added together to be a frustrating experience build up toward the end game.

BUT THEN I FOUND OUT THERE IS X360 VERSION THAT YOU CAN SHOOT AND MOVE FREELY! THIS SH!T MATTERS BETWEEN A FUN GAME AND A TEDIOUS GAME! And there is co-op too so this version doesn't deserve the Deluxe in the name.

Final rating: 5/10. Could be 7/10 if there is control fix, which is never going to be happen for this abandonware. Now excuse me I have dying business with those tanks and satellites in Mission 9 left. Only recommend this one if you just came for nostalgia, which doesn't age well by today.

Loved this game on XBox... Cannot believe there is no joystick support?!? Impossible to move in one direction while shooting in another and therefore almost impossible to advance as you cannot dodge attacks and shoot in another direction at the same time!

My favorite childhood shoot em' up. Nostalgia triggered!
I even remembered doing the free nuke exploit, and it still works.

A great game that was ported terribly. Originally you could move with one analog stick and shoot with the other. Now you move, shoot, and aim with the mouse and there's no built-in controller support. Settings don't save when I close the game, so the resolution is always messed up and the sound is too loud whenever I start the game.
