What's there to say about Hektor?

For starters, it's actually a well done horror title. While not entirely unique, it does enough right, and does it differently, to stand out from what is an overcrowded genre.

Hektor casts you as a patient of some sort, exploring and trying to figure out just what is going on. As you visit different rooms, the game literally does change the environment around you. Running around a corner only to hit a dead end, you'll see a room has appeared where you just came from, or a hallway leading to various other rooms. It's quite jarring, and works well to keep you guessing.

Because it is a horror game, there are a few jump scares. Nothing too crazy, and most you won't expect, but they're not overdone. Where Hektor shines is its tension, or rather, the tension it puts on you. There may not be a jump scare around every corner, but you will wonder what's going on for the entire game, especially when you hit the dream sequences. There's quite a lot of 'wtf' moments, for sure.

Graphically, Hektor looks nice. There aren't a lot of effects (smoke, particles, etc.), but the environments are nicely done. The acting is also good, whether it's the voices you hear throughout the game, or the notes you find scattered about.

On the flipside, Hektor is relatively short. You can finish it in about two hours, give or take a few minutes (or underwear changing breaks). There is no replay value to the game, as once you've beaten it and figured out what's going on (as best you can), there's no incentive to play through again. Perhaps to clean up the achivements you may have missed, if you care about those, but otherwise, no.

SUMMARY

A worthy purchase, when it's on sale. For the normal retail price ($21.99 CDN), it's a little pricy for the length of the game. Jump scares are good, but not overdone, and the overall being on the edge of your seat makes it a good experience.

I needed to change my pants a few times, stock up on Bayer, and hyperventilated more than my share of times. Amazing game, incredible suspense. From the shear beauty of the graphics, to the suspense of not knowing what that sound around the corner is (Or if it's even real) This game will blow you away. 11/10 - Would have a heart attack again

A true HEADACHE simulator.

During the course of the ENTIRE game (two hours), your character is taking handfulls of benzodiazapine. These pills are suppose to keep you "sane", but instead cause the ENTRE SCREEN to constantly swirl and turn. I literally started getting a headache and bouts of motion sickness.

Also, I couldn't even tell you what the story was suppose to be based on.

SKIP THIS.......

One of the scariest games I have ever played. I would recommend you play this during the day and not at night... You won't be able to sleep. This game lulls you into thinking it's all good no jump scare is going to get me. But it's that subtlety background niose or the fact you don't encounter anything straight away that is just timed so well. And before you know it BAM!

Scared the fuck out of me

I really really recommend this game! It has almost everything a good horror game needs. The only thing I missed was the ability to hide from danger. Besides that, graphics are good enough and the FX that sometimes occur are really cool! The story is also good, like in every good horror game you get to understand it as you go along. Nothing is what it seems.

One more big plus is that I only needed to consult a walkthrough video once. The puzzles and situations are eventually solved by common sense. And then there is the coolest thing about this game, I won’t spoil it for you guys, so read on. But they’ve done something with the way you walk through the maps that’s really really cool!!

There eventually is a flashlight, but I only used my zippo because it lit more ahead of you. And like every good horror game there’s the need to keep exploring rooms and places to scavenge stuff you need along the way. Won’t be telling more or maybe I’ll spoil it for you ;)

Buy it! Shit your pants! And have fun!

I was enjoying this game till the monsters appeared according to developer you have to avoid these monsters i find it near impossible when your in a hallway with nowhere to hide. i have yet to even manage to avoid any of the monsters they just run at you kill you. i tried to run past it died, sneak past it runs at you you die. run away from it died. it's impossibley hard. save your money buy outlast or alien isolation at least you can fucking hide. it would be nice if this game had a difficulty setting, or even remove the flipping claw monsters, they aren't scary they're just annoying.another thing the claw monsters ive seen them before in another game can't remember what game, but i think it might be dead space.

If you like horror games this game is a must! Hektor is like a mix of Amnesia and The Stanley Parable. Amnesia because no weapons and you find items and it's like The Stanley Parable because you'll walk down a corridor to a dead end then turn around and find your path completely changed. One time I kept walking through a looping sequence and didn't know where to go so I decided to turn around and walk the other direction...only to find the path changed and was able to go to a new area! Another interesting fear factor to this game is that unlike most horror games that drive the fear and jump scares right from the beginning, Hektor sort of toys with you for a while. It leaves you wondering when it's going to do it. Dark corridors, lights blowing out, whispers in the dark...at one point I was nearly begging for the game to just come get me so I'd have some form of closure, LOL! Play this game at night with headphones on, if you dare!

Pros
Very creepy!
Irregular paths, changing environment.
Unpredictable scare moments.
Find items to proceed - sense of quest.
Things will come get you...but when?

Cons
No real storyline.
Sometimes hard to figure out what to do to proceed.
Ending - I was left scratching my head.
Pills - you take them to keep your sanity but they don't seem to do very much.
Sanity effect - as your character looses sanity the screen twists and changes color. The twisting and swaying is a bit too much and if you have motion sickness sensitivity that may be a big issue for some gamers. By default it's set to 100%. Do yourself a favor and turn it down in settings.
Rare glitch - toward the end of the game I encountered a glitch where the area kept looping. Normally this can happen if you require an item but not in my case. There was no way out of this loop. If this occurs just restart the game and it should get back on track.

This game is too scary for me to play by myself and I'm not usually afraid of games. I keep getting to the first actual enemy that can hurt you and keep dying though. Not a bad game.

I bought Hektor on steam sales for 5$.

Really worth the price for a 2.5hours play!

Well made game with a bit of door bug(difficulty to open) but the creepy and scary ambiance is there A LOT.

I've seen the monsters a lot compared to what I've read on the other reviews and having the fear of always seeing one is really there.

Good game,a bit short but well made, and I prefer it like that!

Hektor... what a nice surprise!

-Levels evolve in real time... wait, was it a corridor behind me one second ago... or was this wall here from the beginning?! Nice, very nice!
-You are trapped in some strange underground facilities/bunker/labs... very dark places where strange experiments were conduct!
-Different "not-so-nice" encounters.
-Enough details around you. Puzzles are simple but OK.
-SFX/ambient tracks are good, immersion is here: play in the dark with your headset like usual!
-Psychedelic phases...
-When you die, you get back very quickly into the action, no time to rest: no time to be bored, good thing!
-Story is interesting enough, some efforts here. End was OK.

It took me 2 hours to complete the game, so you may want to wait for a discount before buying Hektor...
but you definitly want to give it a look! Recommended.

TL;DR:

Awesome atmosphere!
Thrilling and Scary with an intriguing story!
And also... really darn confusing at times!

Some glitches; Once I was so scared I fell trough the world...

But all in all;
I really liked it. It's a Great Game!

Pros / Cons / Long Version:

Pros:

    • Story is... intruiging? ...confusing? ...well, no mater what, I loved it untill the end!
    • Narrating of the letters is really great!
    • Whispers and speach that help you along the way is good.
    • Music really fits and sets the mood of the game.
    • Sound effects are good.
    • Graphics are... OK. Defenatly more a Pro than a Con.
    • Really loving the randomness and the confusion the procedural map generation creates!
And even though there is no level design and the layout is procedurally generated, the same rooms you've been in are cycled trough; so doors etc you've opened are still open and the most important thing: You can learn the escape routes trough those rooms cause you're gonna need to know when one of them horriffic things catches your scent.
    • Sometimes the monsters are sneaky, creeping up all the way to you if you don't pay attention.
Sometimes they make quite a bit of noice so you'd better hurry away from there before they find you!
    • Not much hand holding... your'e just confused and scared all the time! Awesome!

Cons:

    • Some glitches... some freezes (only when I tried to view the journal though)...
    • Some walking to close to an object and you seems to try and jump on top of them... (even though you can't jump in this game)
    • Once I was so scared I fell trough the world; [spoiler]pretty much at the begining when you start off in the isolation cell. I walked out, saw a monster, ran like a scaredy-cat back to the cell and noticed missing walls, floor but with furniture in the rooms and hoped 'graphical glitch I can hide in there!'...I couldn't, there was no floor... I fell... and fell... and fell... and...[\spoiler]
    • It's can be a little hard to open/close doors.
    • You end up going to the same place to pick up things a little to frequently due to the recycling of rooms.
    • I can understand why people say they get 'carsick' from this game (it seems to be a rather drunk driver).
    • AI ain't the best... although you better bring your swift pair of legs, them claws and jaws sure are sharp and hungry!
    • ...what about all those drugs? Never really got the hang of'em...

Connclusion:

OK, some things may be better with a bit of polish... It always will no matter how much polishing you do!

So with that said I will go on stating this:

Awesome atmosphere!
Thrilling and Scary with an intriguing story!
And also... really darn confusing at times!
I really liked it. It's a great game!

As for replayability;
Not super high (even though levels are 'procedurally generated').
I really enjoyed the notes and their narrating and wanted em all for story purposes.
After that you can go achievement hunting.
Some might be quite a pain if you're not lucky since... well it's all random!
Also when you get to know all the monsters and have explored quite a bit it get's a tiny tad less scary.
To me however it never completley lost it's touch like alot of other games tend to do.
I never lost the feeling that I defenatley still needed to keep those swift legs of mine in shape.

But is it worth the 20€...
It's really dangling on the edge but I'll go ahead and say:
Mmmyesh, but barley due to it being rather short.
If you happen to catch it for less than this though, it's a steal!

So now time for a tiny anekdote:

...what is that faint sound?
That wasn't there the last time i had to quit and now I've just started this level and there's not much but dead ends behind me...?
*Turns around to face horrific shimmering shadow creature who's clowly creeping up on me from behind but lets out a horrific shriek when I notice it's presence*
*Heart pounding while trying to climb the walls to escape and don't know whom of us screams the most!*
...I finally got passed it and while trying to hide in the worst place possible thinking *it's coming, it's coming, it's coming...*.
Then when I finally manage to calm down just a bit to dare look out the door... it's gone!
I FRIGGI'N WON THAT SCREAMING CONTEST!
...or...is it...standing right behind me again?!
*spins around* and...
PHEW!!! Finally!! Some breething space! *trying to calm myself down while heart's still punding so heavily it almost makes the atmospheric background music feel like it's on mute*

"Ferociously Recommended."

Just finished the game with 5.4 hours playtime. HEKTOR is about the memory of a political assassination and more the process to extract such memory. The introduction of mind control apparatus rings a bell to MK Ultra in Black Ops, or real world scenario, the whatsup of the matter shrouded in myth.

I have to say there were quite many arts, and in this case games, conceived by the Nordic people, though with so far very limited exposure to me and still have left very positive impression from my standing point.

Dark, Functional, Deep, Cold, Not One Ounce Deadweight. But full of thoughts and life.

It is that kind of rapture that I have long since forgotten, which struck me when I suddenly see the ending credits, and that's where I confirmed one of the names, actually the 1st must have been Nordic.

Be sure to check out a Nordic movie called "Valhalla Rising", starring Mads Mikkelsen, an epic that's both calm and violent to the extremes.

Thanks for the read.

WIsh I had mead.

I enjoy games like Hektor. Horror, scary, achievments, finding notes from different people, all notes have soundtracks which are all voice acted very well. There are supposed to be 40 notes, so far I have found 22 in 7 Hours of Play. There are other collectables; Food, Anxiety Pills, Batteries, etc. There are different types of scares, music, lights, jump scares. There are some puzzles to solve. Sometimes you have to look twice before a clue will appear. Lots of doors to try to open, some of them will actually open. I couldn't stand the wavy visuals, so every time I returned to the game, I turned the strange effects down to minimum, which is 30 %. I would suggest doing the same. Its on the Video control. Sound Control: I turned the music down to 60% and had the voices and other sounds at 100 %. I always had to uncheck the reverse axis box in the game controls. All the controls are quite easy, with a light learning curve. You can crouch, run, walk. I bought Hektor on sale, but is easily worth $ 15. there is a good walkthrough on youtube, in case you get stuck. Enjoy.....

I want to like or at least understand this game. But no, as much as I tried to I found only repetitiveness and boredom. Yes, there are some part that I felt the game was finally getting somewhere but soon enough the game throw me back in the loop of confusion.

Getting kill repetitively by a monster that suddenly come out of nowhere over 20 times makes me quit Hektor forever.

Bought this game because it lists "full controller support", but that is a lie. There is nothing in the options/controls menu about a gamepad/controller whatsoever...not even the option to flip Y axis. In game, all on-screen prompts are for KB/M controls ONLY, so most gameplay elements are a crapshoot at best. Pausing the game doesn't even give you an options menu, like most games. I'll expect a full refund from Steam for this crap.

First, a little ethos-building: I'm a horror game fanatic. Any title boasting even a whiff of creepy atmosphere, sign me up. Cardboard-creaky monsters, cliched storylines, monumentally dumb protagonists? I don't care, sign me up. I also regularly champion indie games. I've played my fair share and count several of them among my absolute favorites. I've played, and loved, so many "bad" games, I even write a blog as testament:

https://wkduffy.wordpress.com/

Now that's done, you can probably see what I'm about to say from a mile away: I'm going to have to give Hektor an enthusiastic thumbs down. Ouch! It's hurts me more than it hurts you.

The main problem here is the translation from idea to actual gameplay, in my opinion. Hektor is (or was, at launch) much touted as "that game where the environment keeps changing all around you like a big head trip." Well, this is true; hallways twist and turn, sometimes evaporating into thin air behind you when you're not looking. Familiar doors appear in front of you, and suddenly you find yourself walking through a deja-vu loop of hallway-room-hallway-room, straight out of some Twilight Zone episode. I'm trapped inside a room, that's inside a room, that's inside a room! AHH!! Or do a 180 to reveal that the path you just traversed has turned into a dead end brick wall.

OK, cool. But when the environments are all incredibly samey (I mean, you pretty much have identical sets of dirty white concrete hallways, closets, wooden desks and doors ad nauseum here--you will NOT find any smidge of variety in this game whatsoever), the long-term effect of this constantly shifting environment...lands with a thud. Who cares? It all looks the same anyway--what does it matter if it's shifting about willy nilly? It ends up not being interesting nor creating any real sense of confusion, tension, mystery, or horror. Darn it.

In fact, it engenders the opposite...a nagging feeling of ennui. I literally found myself saying out loud:

"Clearly, it doesn't matter which hallway or door I choose, which direction I turn, or what I do. The game ends up sending me where it needs to in order for me to progress. I don't need to memorize locations or anything. All I really need to do is just push the thumbstick forward and the game will build itself around me until I get to the end." Yup, pretty much sums it up.

I'm surprised the developers didn't consider this possible effect before committing to this questionable design decision. Talk about alienating your player.

Next, if you take that effect and add to it the fact that the "predator" stalking you throughout the game can kill you upon sight (you have no way to defend yourself; nor can you outrun it; nor can you even effectively hide from it--seriously, there's nothing you can do but stand there and wait for the game to kill you and restart)...well, you end up having absolutely no connection to what is happening, no sense of agency, no sense that any of your actions matter at all. And the puppet-like predator loses all sense of horror the second time you see it--and you will see it repeatedly as it hacks away at you robotically before the screen goes dark. I try not to play the "comparison game" too often honestly, but in this case for some reason, I couldn't help but think how far, far, far away Hektor is in quality from anything Frictional has ever created (for instance). These developers don't have "it," and I don't see them finding "it" any time soon.

As a note-picking-up simulator that attempts to tell a shadowy covert-government-sponsored-brainwashing story (I guess?), it has some pretty well done voice acting. And the music is so suitably depressing (and professionally recorded), I assumed it was simply canned music from some licensed collection. But it appears the sounds were recorded specifically for the game. Kudos on that.

But it's not compelling enough (or properly fleshed out enough) as a narrative to make you care about it or the poor souls inhabiting this world. Hektor tries to do some interesting things, but it's a weak, weak indie. And what the heck does Hektor mean, anyway? That's the flavor which was left in my mouth after the final cutscene played followed by the credits. A weak, meandering fog of...nothing, really.

Definately a solid title, but nothing amazing. I liked the atmosphere and the story was rather interesting. Sometimes the game got repetative, but that really only added to the atmosphere, in my opinion. The graphics were decent, and I thought the sound design was excellent. I can say that it isn't anything amazing or special, but if you're looking for a game that is definately scary and definately good.

Game looks interesting but has little to no controller support. Cannot map keys, does not display which 360 controller button does what. Cannot even navigate menus. Support for controllers advertised and was promised a year ago, still barely present. Wish I could refund this title but too old. Not worth the hassle of waiting and hoping for improvement when there are others out there.

This game has potential, but is tragically undersupported.

I bought this game around when it came out, over a year ago. There are few news updates in general, and when there are they are usually not pertaining to overhauls of the game itself, but rather promotional concerns.

As others have stated, it's an original, quite terrifying experience for the first hour or so, then one is confined to repeating the same places over and over until you unlock the right combination; so it's kind of like playing in a claoustrphobicizing psychedelic combination-lock labyrinth. I hope that this game continues development, it has a lot of potential to be a groundbreaking horror classic. I'll update my review when there's a sizable patch.

Overall, Hektor is a nice game with a short but scary story. Admittedly I would have liked for it to be a little longer and have more of a back end to the plot, but all can be forgiven for just how scary the game can be at points. Will it knock Outlast off of it’s perch? For me, unfortunately not, but for many people, Hektor will be the only game they need to fulfill there nightmarish dreams as the “predator” comes after you with force. I leave you with this, when you get stuck and are not sure what to do, sometimes you have to go backwards to go forwards.

I've played the game for about 10 minutes and that's all it took. This is one HELL of a head trip. Just trying to find your way around is a challenge (one I truly appreciate). This is what a horror game ought to be. Genuinely scary and leaves you guessing and wondering. The fact that you yourself are seemingly lost in an institutution and not knowing how you got there is not new in some horror games but plays well in this one. I highly recommend it. If you suffer from motion sickness, then I don't. It's that type of game.

Scary game, i enjoyed it. Can't confirm the stupid predator that some players mentioned, he chases and hunts you. The game has some little bugs, where you get stuck in some endless loops, returning to the main menu and restarting solves it. An other negative point is that you have to change the options every time you start the game cuz they don't save. Bought it for 5 bucks, seems fair. 10 bucks are a bit too much imho.

Okay, so the pacing is a bit slow to start with, but the graphics are pretty good and the atmosphere is decent enough. Controls are somewhat cumbersome, but you wil get used to them in time so not a deal breaker. Thankfully the game is not jump scare heavy.

My biggest issue is the 'sanity' metre similar to amnesia. Unlike amnesia however you need to take pills that you find in game to restore sanity. The problem is your never sure how many pills are needed to restore sanity, nor how many pills are you likely to find. This lead to me rushing thru sections of the game rather than enjoying the vibe of the creepy locations.

So If you don't mind a more sedate game, and a slightly frustrating sanity mechanic, this is deffo one to try.

Ye Olde Foxeh

This game a very bad negative surprise. I thought it will be a mediocre stuff from an indie developer, but... the controls are sluggish, it needs quite a good computer to run properly (I am speaking about that compared to the visual quality, it is very, very unoptimized).

And to be honest, the greatest issues of all is that you are not instructed as you should, many times you have absolutely no idea what to do. You know that you have to do something locally, as the game basically forces you to stay at one area until you do what you need to. That is fine. But I had enough when I was locked into that generator room, I turned both switches on, then off, then one, then the other, and I was unable to enter the door.

**EDIT**
Okay, I tried my best, looked for info online and finished the game. This was a terrible experience. Later on you get chased by multiple very annoying enemies that you cannot do anything against and cannot really run away from (well, you can run away from the floaty skellies but not from Goro's undead brother Slicey....

Anyway the story is MEH the graphics is okay (the game is very unoptimized, I got ugly FPS drops on a PC which can run twice as modern games way better) the gameplay is annoying.

Don't buy.

Worth about 99 cents for the indie game experience. The game is a maze of constantly changing hallways which is what makes it interesting. Some of the puzzles are solved by just running around in a circle until you feel like you're going crazy. In that regard, they did what they wanted to do. Player feels like an insane person. I beat it but there's not really an ending. 2.1 hours of playtime.

Hektor is a short horror game, but it can take you much more time to finish it,because main character is disorientated and taking pills,so maps are randomly changing. It is not very scary. I would recommend this game, but not for the whole price, wait for discount.

Unhappyallah

Gameplay is nauseating, the more "scared" your character gets the more the screen blurs and distorts causing headaches and nausea. If you use the comand prompt window to remove the insanity you remove the horror aspect of the game. Basically, If you don't play with a headache and a feeling like you are about to throw up, you end up just walking through a mediocre storyline with no real threat or suspense.

My first steam game played and I thought it was alright.

The dark atmosphere is creepy at first but I got used to it.

The interesting part of this game is the changing corridors. I like searching every nook and cranny but once I thought I covered one area, the whole game changes on me. It's a nice unique touch for my experience.

Not much in the story line department unless I continue searching for collectible papers. The collectibles gives the player an understanding of the weird things going on although I'm still confused about the monsters that appear.

There is no broken controls or graphic problems that I saw so that's a plus.

Even though short, it's a decent psychological horror game to try out for newbies like me. I would recommend if the price is under $5 due to the length of the game.

Glad I bought it and played it, but I don't think I can really recommend this to others.

* Camera effects are completely nauseating. I went to the Options to tone it down, but the Options don't really work. It wouldn't save my changes. Furthermore, you are supposed to be able to take benzos to calm the screen down, but even taking multiple pills didn't seem to have any impact. I found myself trying to get killed just to clear the screen.

* The monster materializes out of nowhere. I don't mind a tough game, but I don't want it artificially difficult. Just walking down a hallway, a sound plays, and then there he is right in front of you, completely out of nowhere. However, as I said above, it was almost a reward to get killed so the character would regain his sanity.

* I had to close and restart the game several times to allow myself to progress due to glitches; for instance, once I got trapped on the wrong side of an NPC and there was just nothing I could do.

* Due to the nature of the game (routes sometimes change) you have to walk through the same areas over and over.

Now I did think there were some nice things. Overall, I thought the sound design was nice, and I enjoyed the monster character models. The graphics, as a whole, were just average, though. I did get scared a few times by noisy jump scares, and a number of scenes made me tense, particularly BEFORE the monster was introduced.

Anyway, I did end up enjoying it, but there are just too many problems to really recommend it.

Update: decided to modify my review a bit, since it is now possible to get all the achievements in the game with the help of steam console, redownloading some files using it and a guide by one of the players. Keep in mind that it is still an unoficial way (since the game wasn't patched since i posted my review), so i can't change my attitude towards this game. All the points about bugs remain the same, just ignore the broken achievement ones.

Before writing the review I would like to point out that this game is IMPOSSIBLE TO 100% for achievement hunters, and thus should be avoided. ("Scaredy cat" achievement was broken after one of the patches and "For Kung & Riksdag!" seems to be insanely buggy and at some point stops keeping track of what collectibles you have. Also one of the collectibles was reported to be unreachable. After 5 or so runs i wasn't able to get this achievement.
For casual players who don't focus on achievements, here is my review. I will still mention some bugs I encountered in the game, so be sure to read all of it.

Not sure where to start from. It's just a generic horror game with a monster and notes, but with a bit more effort put into it (it's not complete garbage). Collecting notes is optional, but they help understand the plot. Although i found at least 2 spots in chapter 3 near one of the chess pieces where picking up notes is impossible. I can see the notes but they are glued to the table and it won't let me pick them up. The solution to this is simple: die and hope the note spawns on another table where you can pick it up from. But that shouldn't be the way to solve problems in a GOOD game.

What is unique about this game is that it's constantly shifting/looping corridors, which is interesting and perhaps even fun at first, but becomes annoying and tedious later on in the game (especially when you know what you must do, but the game thinks you need to visit THAT location for the 5th time).

Another mechanic in this game is called "insanity" which makes your screen blurry/wobbly/colorful unless you take your pills. Pills spawning areas are randomly generated of course, so inattentive players may find themselves in a constant state of drunk camera. It's not an annoying effect, although some parts of it literally made my eyes hurt, especially the blurry vision.

Did I mention the game length? Well it's roughly 2 hours (blind playthrough) and less than an hour if you are speedrunning. As for me it's rather short, especially for the price it's sold, but you can always refund it if you don't like it.

The monster...Well it is there and not really annoying, but the game is atmospheric enough and doesn't need a constant threat in my opinion, but of course it is an artificial way of prolonging the game. Without it the game would be even shorter, so it's up to you to decide whether it's a good feature or a bad one.

Now for the painful part...Achievements. One of the achievements requires you to beat the game without using any light source (lighter and flashlight). Do you understand what it means? Yep 2+ hours of bumping into walls and hoping to stumble upon a door. Of course you can adjust your in-game gamma to the max, increase monitor brightness/contrast, but that barely helps and even when it does, it still hurts the eyes and is just a poorly designed achievement.

So overall i can say that this game has its flaws and bugs but a casual player might even enjoy it, especially since it's so short.
The sad part here is that the devs completely abandoned this game and ignore players who add them as a friend so it will never be patched/fixed and you can forget about your 100%.

Other than that feel free to give the game a try and see if you like it or not. Although why support developers which abandon their game after a few patches?

A pretty simple horror game with really nauseating UI, the walls move like waves of water and vision is so blurry it seems like you need glasses.
For some reason my game keeps minimizing on itself.

Well, lemme say it like this: Maybe I am too stupid for this game. What I did was not reading any of the reviews or even the description and just bought it bc I am doing YouTube and wanted to show my viewers an experience that is completely equal to my own, so - no knowledge about the game. I had this weird bug where the monster just stopped in front of me and stared at me and i couldn't do anything but take a step forward so it could kill me (i actually get that bug in lots of monster-ish games, never seen it anywhere else before). I still do recommend it, it's created very nicely, I liked the game mechanics, even though I got so bored that I actually stopped playing it. Maybe I wasn't patient enough. But anyway tho, appreciating the effort. Good job, devs. Bad job, past-me ^^'

So far, I've had several attempts at this game.
Once you manage to get to the "velvet" area, it really turned interesting to me.

I would recommend for people who enjoy horror stories and don't mind some scares!

+ for full voice acting (which I thought was really well done)
+ for intense atmosphere and giving me the creeps

- Walking speed is painfully slow (but the sprint helps a lot)
- I didn't understand the "insane" mechanic
- I don't get the pills (I don't know if they work correctly)

Game is unique, it really makes you feel a disturbed, lunatic. Many have tried, but this game has achieved it.
Congratulations to the developers!

The experience is amazing, you`ll get some good jump scares.
I don`t want to spoil anything, but soon enough you`ll understand why this game is unique.

The only thing I did not like was that the story was really awesome, but ended up (as it had already started) vague as hell!
I really wish they had put less vagueness on that, considering it is an absolutely amazing story, very well portrayed.

Highly, highly recommended! I wish these developers make many more games

The game itself was a mind blowing rollercoaster, from the point you know what your doing to the point you have not a single clue what to do.
The game has its pro's, It made me jump several times. But there is just a lack of information about what your supposed to do. (Which was probably ment to be in a few cases but 80% of the game is just...neeehhhrg)
In the end I just wished for the monster to spawn up next to me so I could respawn near the end of the puzzle.
The monsters look creepy, sadly enough only one looks functional and the other one just
floats to where ever he wants to go.

First time I died the game said " Take your meds".
I took 5 straight after eachother, nothing happend. The same dizzy effect remained and the monster still spawned and killed me.

It's a 4/10 for me, Story line was alright, just the game mechanics needed more polishing

Still one of the WORST "horror" games on Steam.

I finished it in like 50 sessions, just for the sake of it but never again. The game is glitchy(graphics, settings not saving), the story makes no sense at all. And all you do is walk around in the dark in the same areas OVER and OVER. Oh and then some generic monster will chase you, and you start over if it kills you. Might as well play The Stanley Parable(which is a far superior game compared to this crap).

This game is bad in every aspect, and unless you want to torture yourself playing this I would recommend against buying it.

Story seems okey, but gameplay is not good. I think that this game need a lot of improvement. The 'monster' in this game is terrible, scary cause of good horror sounds in some parts, but he always know where to find you. So stealth is one option, but you have to hide pretty good, or run. I think also, that its too much with psycho changing environment when you turn around and want to go back, but you cant. You will always run in circles. I would recommend this game if its cheap, just to try it. But for 9.99, no...

Banan

I'm going to be completely honest; this game isn't bad. It's super scary and unnerving, it also gives you that feel that there's more going on than what's just obvious. On one hand, I enjoyed it, because it scared me and made me not want to sleep for a few days, but on the other hand, the mix of unresponsive controls and visual effects, which, I presume was intentional to make the player feel as if they were in the protagonist's shoes, making it seem as if he was under the influence of some drugs, or that his mental state wasn't what it should be, just made it hard for me to keep playing. It's a cool idea to make your character move slowly compared to what you want him to do, to give it that feeling as if you were drowsy, but it makes the game hard to play.
I wish I could keep playing, but with the headache I'm starting to get, I feel like I won't be able to continue, which really sucks. I recommend this game for people that can handle that, but if you get motion sick or get headaches from blurred vision, just keep scrolling. I also had to turn down the graphic settings to make the game run smoother, which just made everything even more blurry so that didn't help much. I paid $.99 and I'm requesting a refund, which I hate to do, but if you think you can handle the visual effects, I say go ahead and get it. Even for $10 it isn't bad, but if it's on sale, especially for only $1, then definitely don't pass it up. Again, that's only if you can handle the controls and visual aspects of the game.

Evilscaught

Were it not for the help of the internet I probably wouldn't have understood the story at all.
Sure, getting chased by a monster induced adrenaline, but other than that the game was lacking. My first encounter with a hostile monster was a dud, the monster was unable to chase after me becaue a table was in the way, giving me plenty of time to get a good look at his face and make a mockery of him. Like other users have pointed out in their reviews, the game is a walking simulator. You literally cannot interact with anything except the doors, electrical switches, and items you're supposed to pick up. What I found annoying was the fact that monsters could just walk through the doors (when chasing you). In better games, like Amnesia, you can shut the doors shut whilst being chased to buy yourself time because the monsters will have to stop to knock them down. Taking medication seemed to have no effect on the gameplay, Throughout my three hours of game-play, (Steam says 8 hours, but that's because I was AFK) I felt like I was having deja-vu because of the similar level designs. I'd run into places that looked exactly the same as places early in the game. The variety of furniture and decorative items used in this game doesn't add up to much, you could count the unique items in your head. Inconsistencies existed aswell, such as requiring batteries to operate a flashlight, but never having to worry about running out of lighter fuel. When progressing between levels, the game would dump you in an entirely new and unknown location, but perhaps this was done intentionally considering how much of this gameplay depends on the procedurally generated levels. To conclude, I only played this game because I paid for it and didn't want my money to be wasted. The whole time I was playing I was more concerned about finishing this game then prolonging it, there
is nothing attractive or refreshing about this game. Mediocre environment, mediocre shadows, mediocre story, mediocre everything.

My overall impression of this game went up and down like a rollercoaster throughout my playthrough, and ended fairly high, thanks to the strength of the ending, which I also recognize as probably a polarizing love-it-or-hate-it ending.

The core gameplay mechanic of the map being a constantly shifting, non-euclidean space works very well at conveying dementia, often too well. There will be many times you will simply be totally lost. The enemies are plain goofy, random monsters with no connection to the plot, which would be much better as something more abstract (eg. black fog 'shadow creatures' or something like that). When everything is working together properly it's got some pretty great stealth/escape moments, but these moments are rare and fleeting, and otherwise it's a mostly inoffensive spooky exploration game with some straightforward environmental puzzles and very light scripted scares.

*NO SPOILERS* Just finished my first playthrough and let me say that HEKTOR is an absolute must-play for horror fans. Horror is my favorite genre and I've played so many generic Amnesia/Slender ripoffs (I swear there's an entire genre of terrible freeware Unity horror games to suffer through) that it can be impossible sometimes to find interesting new stuff to play. Hektor felt totally fresh and I was constantly on the edge of my seat. I screamed out loud at one point and I think the key to this game's horror is its unpredictability; so many horror games, even the greats like Amnesia, can become all too predictable once you know how the game mechanics work, and this breaks the illusion of the game world. That never happened to me in Hektor because the gameplay is so dynamic that I never knew what to expect. There's also a great integration of puzzles and exploration, two vital elements of a horror experience such as this. The story, taking place during the 1950s apparently, has a great Cold War atmosphere that history buffs like me will LOVE; indeed, this added so much to the experience and I loved it. Furthermore, the story is so open ended that I'll certainly be returning to play this again at some point to try and understand it better. This is probably one of the best horror games on Steam (especially for Mac users, yeah there's still a depressing amount of stuff we can't play :/ )

I completed Hektor in just over 3 hours; it seems that most people can finish much faster than that but it all depends on how you play. In any case, great game and horror fans should definitely check it out.

You don't have to buy Hektor to experience Hektor. 1) get so drunk the room wobbles. 2) If no booze is available, spin i circles until ready to vomit. NOTE: For the true Hektor experience you MUST be motion sick. 3) Walk around an abandoned factory being sure to try to open EVERY locked door. 4) When you realize you hate the guy who made this game, you win!

What a POS.

- Having to figure out everything for yourself without any cut-scenes or explanations may be considered as a flaw. On the other hand, that is exactly what makes the game engaging, difficult and demanding.

Ugh, really wish there was an undecided option. This game could be cool except that I get extremely nauseated when playing and having the halls repeat themselves and having to turn around so much with the lighting KEEPS me getting more and more nauseated.

I loved the premise for the most part. Huge fan of Amnesia. Soma. Outlast I.

By all accounts I should love this game but literally can't stomach it longer than 5-10 minutes before I start breaking sweat O.o

Do I recommend? Can't say, can't play. Is it bad? Maybe it doesn't effect everyone else the way it does me. Is it worth? If you like the other games mentioned above, then most probably.

There I go again, getting nausea just writing this :SSSS oh well, back to Borderlands 2 xD

You start the game with a lighter progressing onto a torch which makes things a little easier as you navigate the corridors. The visuals in the game are great and while I totally appreciate the lack of lighting makes things scarier I can’t help but feel I would have liked to have seen a little further than a few feet in front of my face. the monster rarely attack you and the story is bland , picking the notes can help understanding it but there are some bugs that make it impossible to pick some items . compare to the short length of the game and other indie games , the price tag is a bit high so buy it only on sale.

ORIAX

This game tries so hard to be a deep, narrative storytelling jump-scare with character connection, only to fall short as an expensive ($15 @ time of purchase), asset recycling, confusing and frustrating experience that attempts to hold a lighter to what was once the jump scare video game norm.

Nothing quite makes sense as to why you have to do certain things, there is no explanation. Mechanics for moving forward are nonsensical to progress in what we're calling the story. Character development and connection misses its mark, and what should probably be a 30 minute experience is *thinly* stretched to a 2 hour confusing roller coaster of level design and run in with AI that just kinda always know where you are. I get we're trying to convey the protagonists "need" for drugs and probably not remembering getting turned around, but this whole thing is rather punishing for very, very little return.

JoyfulDeath
JoyfulDeath

While I would like to give this game a better review, the visuals at one point in the game became so unbearable I had to stop the game while I was streaming. Let me explain:

While playing you are to take "benzo" medication which is supposed to help with the visual hallucinations (I guess?) as the room starts to waver, becomes unclear/fuzzy as you explore your location. That's all well and good, though I was never sure how much to take as I would take enough so that the visuals became bearable.

In a generator room it became so ridiculous and waving back and forth like the character was on a ship and so fuzzy and discolored it was not only difficult to see and troubleshoot the puzzle but it became unbearable to continue to view to play the game. The "benzo" didn't seem to help. My viewers and I made a decision to quit at that point.

There are redeeming qualities to the game. There is definitely a spooky atmosphere. There are a couple of jumps and I'm bummed because I think that the game was going to start ramping up the scares at that point. It was a bit confusing where to go exactly as the place kept changing around as you played. Unfortunately as I was unable to finish it, I can't recommend it. But I did pick it up on sale, but I'm glad I didn't pay full price. I would say get it and try it yourself if you can get it on sale.
