I absolutely 100% love and adore this beautiful gorgeous pixel art 8 Bit NES style Indie game so freaking much!!!!!!! Also, with the rocking synth OST!!!!! And the fun as hell fast paced gameplay!!!! If your looking for a amazing gorgeous 8 Bit NES shoot em up. Then this game is for you!
great game, really short campaign though. does have an endless/arcade mode but I didn't try it.
this game fires on all cylinders. great soundtrack, visual design, level design, gameplay and controls. its so cheap for how much quality content you get. you almost never see actual hidden indie gems on steam these days. please take advantage.
Soundtrack is as good as Devolver
Controls feel awesome
Interface is polished and a great experience for the player
Only complaint is sometimes blowing a bunch of money on a weapon and finding it underwhelming. Feels like some need re-balancing
Great art, fantastic music, dumb design choices. Having so many enemies constantly spawn above you without a true method of adequately dealing with them is dumb. Having enemies spawn in on top of you for free hits is dumb. Probably getting refunded since these glaring issues will be enough to keep me from playing it long term.
Fast precise gameplay, excelent soundtrack and graphics, simple yet greatly satisfying. The inclusion of arcade mode and other game modes is nice :)
As usual, surprised with the absurdly positive ratings for this game.
This is not a good game.
It doesn't matter that the music is good. It doesn't matter the graphics work well. That doesn't make a game.
What makes a game is the mechanics and the consistent promise of something new.
As mentioned in the few negative reviews, the combat (which is the only thing this game is) is terrible, you can't aim your gun even though most enemies are flying around above you. Isn't artificial difficulty fun?
The levels are tiny and have little room to stand on. Isn't artificial difficulty fun?
The enemies can drop very close to you while you are occupied with killing other enemies. Isn't artificial difficulty fun?
The levels are repetitive even after only playing for 10 minutes. Getting to your first store is depressingly underwhelming, and overall it just plays... boring. Can't recommend it even on a sale, but since you can figure out if this is a game for you in 15 minutes and refund it, go for it.
it's like if a gameboy and a perturbator album had a baby
Good game well built. My only complaint: I wanted it to be harder. The final boss battle was the only one that took me more than 20 tries to complete.
At the time I'm writing this the game has like only 120 odd reviews...why did I not play this sooner? Only 30 min in and I FEEL how good of a game this is. Get it ya'll, it is goob.
pros:
+ your ears will shiver in rapture (thanks to the soundtrack by Rémi Gallego)
cons:
- your eyes will drip blood
Hectic and great arcade bullet hell fun with stunning graphics (with an own touch). On top of that we are also being served an excellent, pumping, synth-wave soundtrack (a couple of tracks with that distorted, heavy metal, electric guitar that we all love as well) that just reeks of what we want to remember the 80's were like.
I have no complaints what so ever. I could understand some people wanting a longer campaign mode (yes, it was quite short and I wouldn't mind more) but I kind of see that whole part of the game as a tutorial or "getting to know the game". It's in the arcade style modes that the game really shines. Trying to climb the global leader boards. Trying the characters that all feel and play differently from each other. On top of that, you are also given a good upgrade system, great controls and sound effects that do their job. What I initially thought would be a quick little fun ended up being quite addictive.
The people moaning about this game obviously want a completely different game and the critique mainly consists of "Aiming" and "Artificial Difficulty".
Aiming: Some people should maybe be forewarned about this. To me, it just adds to the retro feel without adding any contrived difficulty. Adding free aiming would, well duh, turn it into another game. That game I would probably enjoy as well - but surely not as much. The game would also just get filed in among all the others with the exact same setup.
Artificial difficulty: Yes, enemies will spawn in randomly. Move. Yes, it is important to try to stay on top of the map so you don't get bombarded by them. Artificial difficulty? Nah. Difficult? Ye. Sorry, you just need to get good.
Amazing game, more than worth the $10 price tag. Also pick up the soundtrack while you're at it if you're looking to buy the game!
All it needs is a level editor some day and it will be perfect in my opinion.
Simple to control. Hard to master.
Without enabling the mouse this games basic controls were nearly unplayable. Once enabled I found this game to just be too shallow and unpolished for my interest, levels are small and static, enemies often hit me because they spawned on me. Its not a bad game, it just falls short of its competitors, like Binding of Isaac.
I decided to give the game a 2nd try since they added twin stick aiming finally, and it is a massive improvement.
However, there are still some minor/major annoyances that make the game very frustrating to play IMO.
#1 Enemies can go off screen and shoot you from off screen.
#2 The visual effects can be a bit too extreme to the point that you cant even see the bullets or enemies to avoid them
#3 Your FOV is unnecessarily small when the stages are already very small. The only benefit this has is that it adds some cinematic movement to the camera as you are playing as opposed to a static screen. But I would much prefer a static slightly zoomed out screen that allowed me to see the entire stage at once, rather than being so zoomed in that you have almost zero enemy placement awareness.
This is a small energetic arena shooter.
I bought it and played it for 3.4 hours in one sitting and experienced mostly all of the game
It was very fun from the beginning to the very end.
There are a lot of different playstiles that you can build by combining weapons and upgrades.
The controls are very responsive, the movement is fluid! (turn on the mouse aiming in the settings first tho)
There are a lot of different enemies and when they goup up, you need to think very fast to figure out how to avoid all of the damage.
The art stile is JUST WHAT I LIKE! Very nice limited color pallet with some stylistic post-processing on top.
It's a game for one evening.
Not worth the full price but definitelly pick it up on a sale
I wanted to like this game, but it's not really what it appears to be. Each 'level' is just one screen. For the work put into making this game, it could have been an actual substantial game instead of an ultra-casual kind of game. Why play this game when there are so many better games to spend your time on? This falls into the 'dime a dozen' Steam game heading for me. Too bad, because I really liked the art style.
Game is extremely fun.
Do not play without enabling mouse aim, game has terrible gamepad and keyboard only controls, and I would argue that it might not even be possible to complete with a gamepad/keyboard only. However, once you turn on mouse aim, the game is incredibly fluid and tightly woven.
It's a difficult, I'd even say brutal, game. You could fail a level a dozen times, but every time you get just a little bit closer to that goal, and when you get there, you feel like a winner. With the exception of the final boss's third phase, (you know what I mean.) There aren't any cheap tricks. This is one of the few "uber-hard" games that I didn't just get frustrated at. (Looking at you, meatboy)
This in combination with the absolutely stunning soundtrack make for an exhilerating and immensely satisfying game. Some tracks sit up there with some of my favorites of all time, many reminiscent of Carpenter Brut's music.
The pixel art in the menus, especially for the shops, is absolutely gorgeous. In game, it's not as gorgeous, but does what it needs to. The character models for your demon(s) tend to be questionable.
The game is very short, a 3-hour experience for the main campaign. This is however, supplemented with two additional modes. While I personally don't enjoy Lava Climb, Arcade mode is extremely fun. (I currently hold third spot for Archer's high score as of writing this.) Despite its length, I'd say it's well worth the price, as its length allows it to be so tightly woven.
I would almost argue this game is perfection in what it sets out to do if it weren't for the clumsy UI controls, and the bad default control scheme There's also a small issue of not being given any indicator of enemies off-screen, and looking up can be inconsistent. In taller levels, (Inferno, mostly.) your character can go off-screen, but the camera won't follow. This doesn't happen very often, but definitely needs to be addressed.
If I were a hack games journalist and had to rate it out of 10, I'd give it an 8, needs some fine-tuning, but is an incredible experience.
I look forward to seeing Cuddle Monster's future endeavors. See you in hell!
Cool looking, cool music. Some parts are way too hard but i think i got my moneys worth out of this game.
I remember upvoting this game a few years ago, back when Greenlight was still a thing.
I sort of expected more from it, but it's still pretty fun.
First, it's a beautiful game. As anyone can see from the trailer, the old-school 3-color palette works wonders, and comes along with a nice, catchy soundtrack, and a glorious hellish background.
Gameplay-wise, HiOD also keeps its promise of frantic action. The gameplay, while very fast-paced, is pretty smooth, and there's a reasonable number of enemies, even though part of those are a bit repetitive. Additionnally, there's about 15 different weapons to try out, which drastically change the gameplay.
Now, I have a few complaints about the game. First, even though I'm a keyboard and mouse person, I do sometimes play with a controller for comfort, and while this game technically is playable with a controller, you'll lose a lot of performance, due to the aiming and moving both being mapped on the same stick.
Also, the campaign is very short, containing only 5 not-so-interesting bosses, and quickly leaving you with nothing to do but play arcade mode, which I think could have been a lot more fun, as right now, it just consists of endless wave spawns, with an occasional absolutely-not-game-changing upgrade coming up.
Finally, the action can get hard to read at times, and the game sometimes feels cheap, as a lot of the enemies' patterns consist of ramming into you at insane speeds, which is a problem when they're coming from off-screen.
I love arcade games, and to give you an example, I wasted over 200 hours on Downwell. This game, on the other hand... I've played it for only 5 hours and I already feel like I'm done with it, and it's probably because there's little content, and the Arcade mode lacks something to incentivize you to come back to it.
Those were 5 very enjoyable hours though. To put it in a nutshell, it's cheap and good enough, and probably worth your curiosity.
Disappointing, I just couldn't get to grips with this I'm afraid. Love the art style and overall vibe but I did not find it at all rewarding from a gameplay perspective for a few reasons.
- Enemies spawn on top of you the whole time. Yes, there's a brief warning but it's not really long enough to do anything about it and anyway - having stuff spawn right on top of you is pretty much a cardinal sin of this genre IMO.
- Another cardinal sin of the genre - enemies are always shooting at you from offscreen, or you're having to shoot enemies that are offscreen.
- It's impossible to aim with any accuracy with the controller making the first 'ultimate' weapon pretty much useless. This maybe be better with a keyboard/mouse but that's not how I play.
- Other stupid stuff happens - like you earn a health pickup and then it lands directly on top of a spike!
I really wanted to like this but after playing for just over an hour it seemed mu success/failure had way more to do with random chance (i.e. where enemies spawn) rather than any increasing skill at the game. I'd have levels which took several goes to clear and then I'd clear them by just standing in one place and literally shooting in one direction without moving.
I liked the 'jump to kill' mechanic but again, getting this right was really dependent on where enemies happened to spawn.
Still, the art style is great and generally the feel of the game is nice, but after getting shot by an offscreen enemy for the Nth time I decided this one wasn't for me. There are far better SHMUPs out there IMO. YMMV.
Description: Hell is Other Demons is an indie action platformer/roguelike hybrid developed by Cuddle Monster Games and Published by Kongregate May of 2019. You progress ala-super-marioworld from level to level on a 2-D grid of levels, progressing to item shops and eventually bosses.
Graphics/Art Style: HiOD looks great. They embrace the pixel-graphics style very well, and use it to the fullest. The game has a great demonic/cyberpunk atmosphere, and even the smaller details (weapon projectiles, exploding enemies, etc.) all look exceptionally good.
Controls: The controls are fairly simple, although there is a small learning curve since you can’t shoot up. A decision was likely made very early on in development to keep controls as simple as possible (i.e. you can only shoot left or right). There are some upgrades that allow you to attack down (also you can jump on enemies).
Gameplay: The gameplay is the highlight of this game. Action is fast-paced and compelling, although the maps themselves are each fairly small. I also liked the upgrade system, which makes you balance initial cost vs how much “power” you have to spend on each individual upgrade.
Difficulty: Normal combat was fairly easy, and bosses were all around the same difficulty (except for the last boss). Overall the game is well balanced.
Replayability: There are some alternate modes/challenges to get high-scores for endless levels, but other than that there isn’t any reason I can find to play through the game again.
Writing/Story: Little to no story.
Length/Price/Value: Bought on sale for $9.63, beat the game in 4.6 hours, totaling $2.09 per hour. This game is a little steep price-wise considering the game length.
Recommendation: If you like pixel graphics action-platformer action games and aren’t concerned about price then you will enjoy Hell is Other Demons. But I would wait until it is on sale.
So okay the game itself is pretty good with a fair amount of variety and stuff and I do recommend it but HOLY SHIDD the control binding here is an experience. It's like the dev implemented risk/reward mechanics into it lmao
I'll just copypaste what I told a friend about it because I don't think I could convey how I felt at the time any better than that:
"hell is other demons
for context it's an arcade-y 2D platform arena shooter game
and the control bindings are there but
they're incomplete
in all implementations
so you want to play keyboard only?
the game has free aiming, so you'll be at disadvantage in that area
so you go for K+M
but now you find out you can't rebind controls for the mouse
well okay, just let me rebind the jump to the same key for up since spacebar jumping in this kind of game will fuck up my tendons...
OH
you can't bind the same key to more than one action, so the up action will have to go
and you need that to dash upwards (it's ONLY used for that)
so no dashing upwards
same thing with binding the dive action to what would be the down key
so fuck it, just go for the gamepad right?
WELL THE GAMEPAD DOESN'T USE THE RIGHT FUCKING STICK FOR AIMING SO YOU HAVE TO MOVE AND AIM AT THE SAME TIME WITH THE LEFT ONE
it uses the right stick for NOTHING
and you can't rebind it
it's
gfluisdjnfojsdaugh
what the fuck"
A bullet-hell masterpiece. Just get it if you like the genre. Great pixelated artwork, fast, balanced gameplay, challenging but but fun, excellent soundtrakc. Score 10/10
completar task :3
mas o jogo é legal
very fun and challenging game. the controls feel very good, the levels fit the style of the game and the artstyle is beautiful.
there's only two downsides. the first is that you're not really able to see much of which is going on above you, so you always have to be careful about how you ascend, but its possible to play around that. and the second is that this game seems to have been designed without being able to aim at first, which may be a turn off for some players, if they want to customize their controls.
at first it feels like its a game designed for controllers, then you realize "wait, this game has an option to aim with mouse?" then you want to use that, because you can't aim on controller. but then you realize playing on keyboard, doesn't feels as great as on controller and if you play windowed in any way, your cursor can just leave the window. it isn't fully developed.
so this game either needs an option to lock the cursor into the games window, or an option to be able to aim with the right control stick on your controller.
i think best would have been to not have the aiming option in there at all. after i stopped bothering, trying to aim at my targets (mainly up and down) i realized how well this game plays without it. great game!
Killer soundtrack and fantastic game-play. I don't even know what this game is about, but I don't think that matters. Video games where you massacre hoards of demons usually don't need a plot.
It's very fun. The music is just fantastic and pumps adrenaline. The aiming sensitivity functions needs to be added as the aiming with mouse is quite stiff. Other than that, the game is good.
Edit: Changed to "positive" since it seems the dev fixed the issue! :-)
Currently I cannot just simply recommend this game. Aiming mechanic is bad.
None the less, I still really enjoyed the game. If you think you can manage the frustration, you will find a great game beneath
Great game, great platforming mechanics, and full controller support.
A frantic pixel art run and gun game with some delicious Dark synth music to back it up, it's pretty awesome though it took me a while to get used to the control schemes, I'll probably continue going at the endless modes for the time being :)
At first I was a little disappointed that it didn't have any actual levels, but after playing for a couple minutes, I was hooked. Small arena-style gameplay actually works really well and would definitely recommend.
very fun, hard as balls but very fun
fun, its like a pixelated doom eternal and celeste combination, a nice and enjoyable soundtrack, try it
Best of both worlds? No, best of every world.
Gameplay is fast and easy to pick up, while the visuals and audio are a feast for the senses. Spent the first few min configuring m+k controls- it sorta works, but this is definitely a game to bust out the controller for. Movement is exceptionally smooth and very intuitive for anybody who's played a 2D game before. First few levels are well designed with enough enemies to keep you busy, but not enough to get overwhelmed. One minor annoyance is that every element on screen (foreground, background, and enemies) are all crafted from the same color palette. While beautiful and immersive, it does create some visually confusing moments when the scene gets extra busy. I found myself accidentally shooting terrain a couple times, which I'm sure can be solved with more play time to teach my brain to recognize the real threats. That being said, this is a feature that adds a challenging twist to the gameplay and really makes this title stand out. I will try to update this when I get more hours in, but it likely will just be more of the same.
TLDR: Fast-paced, easy to pick up, and fluid gameplay with immersive art and sound design. 9/10
very simple yet challenging and creative
Game is amazing, u just needa enable mouse in controls
This game is super fun, great music, fast-paced action with satisfying upgrades and a nice arcade-y style.
Did I just "Save" Hell?
Hell is Other Demons is a technically incredible arcade game, from how everything is drawn while being limited by a 4 colour game boy pèalette to how colours flow and mash both in the background and foreground, and with a gameplay as fluid as this it's very difficult to comprehend that the devs were able to keep a graphical fedelity as this title shows.
Combat is simple but fun and features my favourite upgrade system, everything from weapons to modifiers to base stats requires slots to be used, but there's no limit to what you can choose as long as you have free slots.
Gunplay and movement feels smooth, fast but not too fast to be slippery.
All and all a solid arcade game with very good visuals.
I started playing this game during the winter sale and then moved on to other stuff that I bought in it as well.
Today I returned to the game and turns out I only had a couple of levels left before the ending.
It's a short game. You can definitely finish it in less than 2 hours but there's some replay material and new game modes if you're into that. I'm not, so for me, the game ends here.
I liked the art style and the music. The game forces you to swap your upgrades (for which there are a lot) every now on then for specific levels putting you out of your comfort zone. I also liked that. Made it less repetitive.
Boss battles were cool, but I wish there had been more of them and less of the regular levels.
Story is almost non existent and once you get pass the controls (not bad, not really good either), the game is kind of fun and you get this "one more level" kind of vibe.
It's not an incredible game, but it's not bad either. Wait for a sale to play it.
It's incredibly addicting. The music and animations are superb!
Hell may be other demons but heaven is hell is other demons.
Very good game but sadly very short.
The game is nice and promising, but the controls sucks. Movement and Aim are on the same stick and the camera shake like crazy. You can solve the camera shaking in the options, but the Aim can't be changed.
Waited for a sale - clearly a lot of good work and thought gone in here.
If you're stubborn, you can hold out on insisting to crack a tough level with low grade gear. Like fifty retries I had on one, all the time learning it and harvesting credits. And then beat it and go and splurge it all in the shop to buy buffs and then devastate the levels around it on first try.
Or whatever, play how you like - that's the fun the setup allows.
On sale, a no-brainer. Full price, clearly one has to be more sure of this type of game than I was. But whichever way you cut it, the game is good imho :)
I was initially not fully pumped about this game when I first started playing, mostly due to the fact that you can't move and aim separately, as well as aim down. However, as I progressed, I found myself enjoying it more and more. The visuals are well done with clear cut enemies and outlines on the necessary objects. The gameplay is very tight and controls very well, with the aiming/moving separately eventually feeling unnecessary. Not being able to aim down (except for some specific weapons) is easily overlooked by the stomping ability, and only being able to suck in gems while not holding down the shoot button is intuitive and rewards not mindlessly holding it down constantly. The bosses are also quite fun as well. Overall, this game is very enjoyable if you just stick with it and explore all it has to offer.
Quick Description:
-Hell is Other Demons is an incredibly addictive arena shooter w/ an old school aesthetic. This game is filled w/ content that includes 3 different unique modes, and jam packed w/ style and top notch mechanics. This is a must play for game lovers out there.
What's Good:
-You'll immediately be drawn in by the art direction. It's a really cool old school aesthetic that mixes some elements from Game Boy and Super Nintendo, but w/ a modern polish. Each set of levels has a unique color palette and looks great visually from start to finish.
-There are 3 modes and each are fun and offer new challenges. The campaign mode is going to be very similar to a stage based arena shooter. It's fantastic and will take most players at least 5-8 hrs to complete. The Arcade mode is the rogue-light mode and is a great choice for replayability. The final mode is the Lava mode which is kind of like a reverse Downwell experience where you are climbing up while avoiding both enemies and the lava beneath you. You don't have weapons in this mode, which adds on a new layer of challenge.
-Tons of upgrades and it's really fun to see how different upgrades synergize w/ each other. It's really solid for an arena shooter action platformer and offers a lot more depth than I was expecting. It's not going to be as comprehensive as games like Binding Of Isaac, but I don't think anyone would go in expecting that.
-Really solid mechanically. Moving, jumping, shooting, and using your special weapons all feel really good. Being able to stomp on top of enemies was a great choice and adds more strategy to how you eliminate enemies while avoiding projectiles and hazards. Movement is buttery smooth which is a must for a game like this.
-Excellent difficulty curve that slowly eases you in and then pushes you to master the mechanics. I never felt overwhelmed and was always able to complete a level w/ enough time and practice. Mixing and matching upgrades is really important as all bosses have different weaknesses, so sometimes it's a matter of trying out a new upgrade combo.
-Excellent value at just $10. I picked this up for $2 last October which is insane value for a game this good. This is a solo devs first project which is pretty amazing. I will be supporting this dev moving forward w/ anything he develops.
-The bosses are really fun and offer a lot of variety. Learning each bosses patterns and figuring out which weapons to use are really important.
Could Use a Few Changes:
-The learning curve is a bit steeper than the average game. Although I thought the campaign introduced a solid tutorial and slowly pushed you forward, I could see less experienced players struggling to get much traction early.
-No accessibility options. It would have been nice if there was a way to make a few changes for beginner players or ppl w/ disabilities. Being able to manually add lives or slow down enemy movement is something games are starting to offer more frequently.
-The screen can become flooded w/ projectiles and enemies at times in the later levels and deep in the arcade mode. It can become difficult to distinguish everything apart which can lead to taking damage when you aren't expecting to. This was pretty rare but it will happen on occasion. It's kind of the nature of the beast when it comes to this genre and this art design.
Thoughts:
-I loved close to every minute that I played this game. I still haven't unlocked all of the upgrades and have barely put a dent into both the Arcade and Lava mode, so there is still plenty of content for me to complete. I loved the Campaign and I'd recommend this game w/ that mode alone. Having the other two modes really puts Hell is Other Demons over the top. This really is a great addition to almost any Indie fans library.
Consensus:
-Excellent Game (Tier 2 and makes up 25% of my reviews). Hell is Other Demons really isn't getting the attention it deserves. It is such a fun game that I am happy to recommend to pretty much everyone. Support a talented dev and pick this gem up the next chance you get!
Reasonably fun to play, but a bit too unpleasant to visually decode. Between the constant particles, moving/claustrophobic camera, and lack of animation, the bullet-hell gameplay can be exhausting to look at. Processing peripheral information amidst a barrage of objects and obstacles in a tight arena isn’t well-suited to a stylistically-limited palette. For example, white indicates your character, some enemies, your projectiles, enemies’ projectiles, platforms, spiked platforms, pickups, and the mouse cursor while the darker secondary color (which is set on black) is used for some enemies, some platforms, spawn locations, the ever-present smoke, and the after-effects of nearly all projectiles. It’s easy to get lost in the noise. At least the screen shake can be turned off.
Imagine a 2d shooter with insane difficulity, beutiful graphics and sountrack and an emphasis on platforming,
That is hell is other demons.
its like exit the gungeon but with demons
Heavily underrated game that deserves a ton more attention and love. It's super fun and has a great soundtrack as well as an appealing art style with vibrant colour schemes. Only problem is when playing it's possible for your mouse to move to the other monitor and click off the game, other than that lots of fun and a great experience!
Fun game with a banger of a soundtrack. Controller recommended.
Fun shooter game :), simple mechanics and challenging levels
looks great, gameplay is on point and decently hard. OST is a banger
Perfect plataformer and bullet hell combination.
Awesome game!
Fun and challenging little shooter with great artwork. Awesome, fast paced gunplay with cool upgrades.
This is the most underrated game i've seen. I loved every minute of this, art style and audio is perfect, weapons and perks are so fun to mix and match to get op synergies. Seriously an amazing game. 10/10 would get half my health deleted by spike on floor again.
Bought this for like couple dollars and the game is amazing, musics too! only downside is that the campaign is quite short, but then you can replay the levels or the arcade mode for seeing how good you rank.
I'd say it would have been a burden to play if i did not get a gaming controller for my pc , so controller is recommended if not required.
It's a great game, although I would like it to have more achievements.
Word to the wise, the default keyboard controls for anyone who plays arrowkeys (and probably wasd too) are fucking garbage. Too much movement required on the fingers for these kinda arcadey action games without making your hand rest in an awkward position. Once you get past that hurdle (aka rebind which I was too lazy to do until 3 hours in lmao) though this game is incredible. Arcade mode is where it's at, campaign cool but a bit too restrictive and slow for me. Still fun thou.
cool little game. worth when on sale
Ehhh... I think it has some decent ideas but just has too many shortcomings to be enjoyable.
I absolutely cannot stand games that make you repeatedly mash a button to shoot. Please just enable the option to use stick to shoot.
Also the game has really bad visual clarity, and is also just really cluttered in general. It's hard to tell what is an enemy, and they pop up and spawn suddenly. Hard to tell terrain from environmental hazards. Hard to tell what enemy is what because they are such a mess of same-colored pixels. If you're going to go with a limited color palette, ensure that your game actually has very clear and concise visuals... Something like N++ or Downwell have very obvious and clear threats where a limited color palette works great... this game doesn't, and having two colors just really makes everything look like a muddy mess instead.
Finally, a ton of the guns just suck honestly... Maybe that's part of the design or the challenge, but the icons for the guns all blend together and a few of these guns are just really, really bad and basically ruin a run.
Worth the price, fun and really chill to play
What a nice surprise for such a low price.
Mouse aim not being the default is baffling, but exactly what i wanted
I'm writing this review after I finished everything this game has to offer and I must say that this game is the most underrated platform fighter I ever played. Gameplay is phenomenal. Music is Cool. Art style is outstanding. The weakest part of the game is probably the story but it isn't really bad but compared to the other parts of the game it's not important. Controls are clean mechanics are nice and the game just feals very good to play overall. It's also kinda short but for it's price it's definetly worth buying. Overall a great experiance. 9/10
as a completionist trying to get all the achievements here is a great challenge even though its only 5
ez pick
lava mode is hell but fun
It has great graphics, a great soundtrack, simple and fun mechanics and a great deal of replayability. If you like hellish motifs and are looking for an arcade-y platform shooter, then pick this up. It's worth every cent.
HiOD is an AMAZING game. Everything about it is just a 10/10.
The fast-paced wave-based chaos that happens is surprisingly entertaining, the bosses are REALLY fun and the soundtrack...
Oh my god, the soundtrack...
This game's movement feels really good and smooth, and a crap ton of items synergize with each other, so finding the perfect loadout is also very fun.
*also go into the options and enable mouse control, it's gonna make the game so much better to play*
This is Hollow Knight with guns instead of nails.
The representation of the final form of DEMOcracy and how to replace it with imperialism.
The game is kind of a bullet hell game with brawler like rooms set in hell, you go through maps kill everything on sight while trying to avoid getting killed and developing you skills and rythm
I havent finished the game yet, but I like it so much. I usually hate this kind of game, but theres nothing here to dislike, so i'll start by the things I normally hate about these games and tell you how it doesnt go there.
1- precission platforming: I hate it, how some people like having to calculate a jump down to the pixel while everything moves at light speed is beyond me. This game? it gives you flexibility, its hard, its fast, but you get easily used to the controls and then the fun ramps up a ton.
2-boring maps: this kind of games usually have a very defined set up and then they only throw new enemies at you. Not here, the rooms are fresh, each has a defined working strategy, which you can just ignore and have your skill win the day
3- Bullet hell: many games just fill the screen with bullets doing crazy shit and annoying traps. This IS hell and yet the enemies and attack styles are thrown at you in fun, interesting and very distinct ways... its a monochrome bullethellish game, and yet you never feel you have lost your bearings THAT ALONE WOULD MAKE THIS GAME AWESOME in comparison to others.
Now going stright to the love:
1- The music is awesome and complements the rythm of the game, the skills and bonuses are fun to use and the development system simple and effective... THIS DEVs knew what they were doing
2- the graphics are interesting and the rooms engaging
3- there is a campaign mode, an arcade mode (with several characters to unlock) and climb up mode, so there is fun to go around
4-the bosses feel all unique withing the game and coherent with the theme of their section.
Now if I had a gun pointed at my head and was told to find a flaw, it would be this, the premise of the story is captivating, however I am at a point were I feel the campain is almost at an end an I havent see much story progression, I hope this is not either a storyless game OR a souls like narration... I mean, paying attention to hidden details while dodging bullets at high speeds doesnt sound reasonable (i'll update upon completion)
UPDATE: I have now finished the story, not much to say about it, BUT the magic came after, the ARCADE MODE IS EVEN BETTER THAN THE STORY MODE, Devs should lean hard into this game, I mean, its awesome.
fun little game reminiscent of flash games.
worth it on sale.
medium difficulty.
decent music.
ran fine on linux.
controller worked fine.
might revisit arcade mode to explore alt playstyles.
Really Fun! Has a stomp and shoot mechanic like downwell. Simple concept, Ok soundtrack, however everything feels very precise and clean. Easy to learn, hard to master, yet satisfying to conquer.
arcade shooter, pixel art, simple but hard, great game
Hell is other Demon is a wonderful game.
The game is build so that you learn all the mechanics and become better after every round.
At the start of the Campaign it's easy, but then it starts to get really hard and you almost Cant beat the LVL. There are also some challenges for every LVL you can try to master: beat the LVL without losing health, without ult and without gun. After some LVL you can fight against a boss, the first time is difficult but after some attempts you know that attacks he does, and you can beat him easily.
If you love pixel art, game that a game for you! The game is in a lovely pixel art style, you can also change the color of the hole game.
But there are not only LVL (Campaign), there is also Arcade. Arcade is a game mode where you can choose from a hero with different abilities and try to come as far as possible (infinity game mode).
The last game mode that this game offers is Lava Jump. Lava Jump is a game mode where you must jump from platform to platform and in the same time kill the enemies. Like Doodle Jump, but with enemies.
