If Charles Eyler has a million fans, then I am one of them. If Charles Eyler has ten fans, then I am one of them. If Charles Eyler has only one fan then that is me. If Charles Eyler has no fans, then that means I am no longer on earth. If the world is against Charles Eyler, then I am against the world.

If you enjoy HC:EP2, you definitely will like HC:EP3 even more. There's decent technical and budget improvement compared with first 2 HC games. Here are the improvement,

    • Better art/animation during cutscene.
    • Improved game UI.
    • More challanging and less-annoying puzzle.
    • Better usage of game SFX.
    • More mature writing, world building and commentary about art/fiction works.

HC:EP1 left me intrigued, while HC:EP2 left me lots of question about Charlotte and the world building. EP:HC3 finally answer most of my question with satisfying ending and obviously more emotional damage.

Hello Charlotte is easily my favorite series of all time. A friend recommended it to me and I must say, I would do the same to everyone else. This is a review of all 3 episodes (and if you haven't played the first 2 what are you doing play the games you won't regret it).

The game first attracted me by its artstyle. It's cute, adorable even, yet it can also be terrifying. The artstyles in the 3 games are different, and there is clearly an increase in quality in every game. The design differences might be confusing at first, but I got used to it in a pretty short while.

Ep1 seems more like the creator, Etherane, experimenting with the RPG Maker mechanics and just game making in general. The story is very interesting, and gives you an idea on how the world in the game functions. However, in Ep1, your every move and choice matters, as any wrong move may kill you and send you back to the last checkpoint.

Ep2 starts a few years after Ep1's story, and it would be probably very different from how you would think it would go after Ep1. This is where the story takes a turn and gets depressing for me. With Etherane's excellent story-telling skills, it told me a story that I would never forget. Like Ep1, there are a lot of puzzles to solve in order to progress the game, however this time it's not as punishing as usually it's not gonna kill you.

Ep3 is both a prologue and an epilogue to the story. Again, the story will be very different from how you think it will be. At first, you would probably be confused, but once you reach the end everything makes sense. The prologue part gave great backstory to the game and how this world was first created. The epilogue part is a climatic, moving and excellent ending to the story. Like the 2 previous games, puzzles are still there.

I wouldn't say that everyone will get the same feelings as mine during my playthrough of the game. To some people, it is a story that is unique, interesting and unforgettable. To others, it can be as if the game is talking to them, and understanding them.

"I will travel across the seas and skies.

Wander among roots and ruins of civilizations.

Watch lives bloom and wither, and be reborn again.

Perhaps then I'll learn how to be kind.

Perhaps then I'll learn how to be honest.

Perhaps then I'll learn how not to hurt others.

I want to become a better person, Seth.

Thank you for everything you've done for me.

You've been a great friend.

Thank you for seeing my story through the end.

Let's meet again one day."

Let's make this quick shall we. You should have played Episode 1 and 2 by now, bonus point if you also do delirium before this one. Yes this one will make you cry harder than the previous episodes assuming you did cry. Yes the story is confusing but satisfying. Yes this is dark, disturbing, scary, and has a high possibility of giving you depression. Final Yes, this game is definitely worth all the pain.

Takes all you've learnt fom EP and throws it into a trash can. The least enjoyable episode gameplay-wise: in the beginning it's frustrating and unrelatable, later it's a drag with puzzles. In the middle you'll find yourself overwhelmed with more and more convoluted story arcs screwing up any concept you had.
But still, it manages to keep you engaged and resolves those stories in a suprising twist at the end. Additionally, I'm impressed how HC and especially this episode brings an original approach on forth-wall breaking into play.
I didn't end up as devastated as after EP2, but still episode leaves quite an impact. While EP 2 works well on it's own, that definitly doesn't apply to EP3 – it won't make any sense if you don't know what has happend before (I wouldn't guarantee that you can make sense out of it if you do, though).

This is the first review I made on Steam. I've played great games yet was never bothered to make a review. Hello Charlotte series managed to break my silly tradition.

The series provides a unique flow that I've never experienced before. EP1 is a glimpse on the bizarre worldview. EP2 follows with strong development of characters and a remarkable storyline. EP3 completely shatters everything you know, giving hints along the mind-breaking journey and bringing the final revelation. There will be times when knowledge of the player gets deconstructed, then reconstructed as the game goes on.

The game is well-represented by a mix of highly literary stream-of-consciousness narration, heart-warming/breaking moments and fourth-wall-breaking fridge brilliance/horror. The art of the game is also just too fitting for the genre.

The character development is one of the best I've ever experienced. The characters are very vivid and goes with a deep backstory. The motives of their decision making is well-justified by their different personalities and past experience.

The lore of the game goes real deep, thus brings high replayability, since it wouldn't be easy to fully understand the whole lore after the first play through. There are so many subtle hints and foreshadowing in the series that are hard to pick up at first, yet can bring chills when replayed. I plan on doing an entire replay of the trilogy some time later.

There is so much more to talk about but I could think of this much so far without spoiling anything.

Thank you etherane, for telling a breathtaking story that I will never forget.

And I shall drop all the seriousness for now:
PLAY THE GAME!!!!!

(some irrelevant rambling:
Part of the game's concept/settings shares a horrifying level of similarity with a project I'm working on. It brought so much chills to me when I was playing it as I thought my mind was being read.)

But seriously if you enjoyed Episode 1 & 2 you will love this cause not only will you understand most if not everything but you will be satifised at the end... assuming you get the True Ending that is.

This review will cover Hello Charlotte 1, 2, and 3 as a whole. At the time of initial writing, I have yet to play the spinoffs (Delirium and Heaven's Gate), and this is intentional, as I wish to give my thoughts on the mainline series first and come back later when I have the additional supplements.

Hello Charlotte is odd, transcendent, surreal, and poignant. Hello Charlotte is not a game. Hello Charlotte is a glimpse into the mind of a person. A real person who has filled this virtual experience with their sorrow, imagination, longing, and coping. If you want to be entertained, I would recommend you go elsewhere. If you want to stretch your thinking, put your mental fortitude to the test, and really question your faith in what's real and meaningful, I suggest you stay.
Hello Charlotte is in the genre of what I call the "Niche RPGs". These typically focus on narrative, visual style, and characters. Hello Charlotte is on the more abstract end of some of these in the genre. While some players may be put off by games that incorporate subjective surrealism, and the general attitude of "none of it makes sense and that's the point".... that really is the point of Hello Charlotte. The story is told as much through the method of storytelling as it is through the plot itself, leading to very "meta" experience, without feeling pretentious and fake. Some games feel that way; you can tell that the developer is purposefully creating nonsense to fill the void of sense. Etherane fills the void of sense with emotion and genuine uncertainty. These characters are all uncertain (in more ways than one). When someone has been stricken with such a tragedy, such senseless malice, and with no foundation of God or any higher belief to stand on, what is keeping them from falling into the void? Without a semblance of hope in reality, can anyone blame someone for a hopeless, surreal, and equally nebulous fiction? If a creator is themselves a weak, broken, misanthropic, miserable creature, why would you expect their creations to be any different? How could they be any different? And if the cycle of despair seems to only spiral further and further, what is to stop you from simply ending it? Would it be far crueler to let it continue? All of these questions may not resonate with everyone, but they certainly resonated with me. Despite my firm faith, I found this game and it's sheer nihilistic wonder to be such an enriching experience. Not because I empathized with any of the characters, but because I sympathized with them. To place myself in their shoes, into an existence dictated by cruelty, meaningless public opinion, and no justice in sight, is a humbling experience. It is one that will make you grateful to live in a world with family, friends, and real people. For those who can empathize with this hopelessness because you experience it, I pray that you find something here to help you, and at least take solace in the fact that somebody else understands you. I hope that anyone who plays this game finds something to gleam from the grotesque and surreal visuals, the dark and dry humor, the seemingly futile struggle of a sweet and hopeful girl turned bitter, and the desire for a restless world to be simply laid to rest.

While I understand much of this review may be my own pseudo-intellectual musings of a niche RPGMaker game, there is so much in this series to love, and I am happy that the developer decided to pour their heart out and share this hidden masterpiece of a series with us. Give it a chance, but be ready to suffer.

This series has wonderfully creative visuals and a criminally underappreciated soundtrack, especially in the 2nd and 3rd installment. Most of the puzzles are enjoyable at best and trivial at worst.

For what it is, easily a 9/10, and one of my top 3 experiences in its category.

I love how Childhood's End ties into the two other games, it really helps explain and expand upon the universe of Hello Charlotte. Not only that, but it touches the player very deeply on an emotional and personal level (depending on who you are, I guess.) I feel seen and comforted by the series and this game is no exception. The conclusion was bittersweet and I enjoyed that a lot..
Overall I would say this game is an absolute Must Play. The Hello Charlotte series is very meaningful to me and I'm sure plenty of others would feel that way too. Highly recommend.

This is a review of Hello Charlotte EP1, EP2, and EP3. Play this game after the other two.

I played OMORI and LOVED it, and though I probably should not have set my standards to that of OMORI, I still did. This game was recommended by many people who also enjoyed OMORI, so I gave it a shot, and if you have read my OMORI review, you could tell that this one requires a deeper explanation other than 'this game is near perfect please play it now.' I won't spoil any of the plot points, but I feel like I need to explain my experience with the games and their story(ies).

First off, the art style. Cute, yet horrific, and possibly a bit too gory at times, is overall very pretty, and for that alone I wish it was more popular. Over the 3 games, there is a clear increase in budget both in art and overall design, and I do not consider this a bad thing. It is nice seeing the progression an indie dev goes through when making a game, and though sometimes the design changes made the game a bit more confusing, I felt that it was worth it. Speaking of confusion;

The story is great, but very convoluted and confusing, containing retcons that are still canon due to the way the game's universe functions, fiction within fiction that breaks the fourth wall and references the player while still not being overly meta, and many other narrative discrepancies that I could not appreciate until I completed all three episodes. This is my only major complaint about the game. I felt as if the story wanted to go a certain direction but then completely changed direction between games. This did not clear up any of the confusion that I was experiencing when playing the game.

I was not very fond of the first game outside of the art style, but it was still a quirky little RPG Maker game. Excluding the story, the gameplay is pretty much walk > die > go to last save > repeat, as well as solving puzzles along the way. I was expecting more but wasn't entirely disappointed. The last few minutes of the game made the whole experience worth it. I could see exactly where the game was going with the story and was very excited to play EP2, at least, I thought I knew where it was going.

As EP2 started, I noticed a clear increase in budget and was very excited about what was to come. However, what came, did not really trail off of the ending of EP1 as I hoped. The story became something else entirely, but it was not something bad. Unlike the first game, there is only 1 'cheesy death/bad ending' compared to the many the first game had (I think), which already made the game a lot more fun to play. Most of the characters are likable in some way, and they are all very cute. I think I like C the best. The ending again was great but did not really lead into EP3.

EP3, oh boy. The story starts out like EP2, but there is a slight difference that makes a pretty big impact on the story. I was not a fan of that slight difference. However, the game still had its charm and I did enjoy the story, or at least, what I could attempt to comprehend from it. Eventually, the game introduces a new area that through hardly any explanation changes the plot entirely. After I realized what was happening, the overall story made sooooooo much more sense. So please, if you are playing through the games and are confused as hell, just hold on. The game then continues telling its story, and a good one at that. At this point, I can actually appreciate the story. I am still a bit confused, but glad to have got this far. Eventually, after some more intricate story-telling and puzzles, I come to the climactic ending where my confusion is dissolved and the game makes complete sense.

Overall my experience with the game was mixed, and the themes of the game did not hit home to me, but I can with absolute certainty say that it was not a waste of my time. I probably set my standards too high but I do believe that the game has objective flaws in its writing. Though they are hard to overlook, especially at first, once you understand the game's plot and its universe, those flaws become relatively transparent.
Highly recommend it to people who enjoyed OMORI or like dark comedies (with a vague and confusing plot at times). I would give it a 9.5/10 but between EP1's gimmicky death mechanics and the hard-as-hell-to-follow story I feel like a slightly lower rating is deserved.
8.5/10

Selen

You probably should not play this. But after playing it through for the 2nd time i thought - who am i to tell you what to do? So let's see...

I'm sorry, but i sincerely can not recommend this game to the diehard fans of EP1 and 2. Thought it works well as a standalone feature for those unfamiliar with EP1 and 2. Maybe you can play those after this one.

In fact, i would advise fans of previous games to steer clear from this one. Let the endings of EP2 (all of them) stay as they are in your heart, let that experience remain untarnished.

Now, to EP3 itself. It's kind of bad. It makes you think like it goes somewhere, and you roll with it, filled with expectations, but then it abruptly ends and leaves you questioning author's motivations. Etherane was tired of this franchise and it shows. Etherane didn't ever plan to make EP2 or 3 and it shows. EP1 and 2 had their flaws, yes, but they were good stories with relatable characters, interesting thoughts and ideas and i overall liked them a lot. I liked the characters, their development, their relations and the undergoing message that i all has meaning. EP2 had several extremely impactful moments in particular. I related. I let the story traverse through me and leave a lasting impact.

EP3 just throws that out of the window for the sake of... what, exactly? Well, for the sake of venting. Etherane needed this to happen. To move on, to keep living and creating, to have someone to listen what they have to say. She could've done that thought literally any other way, without de-valuating previous episodes, yes... But what's done is done.

EP3 is an experience. I can't call it a journey. It's you experiencing what's inside Etherane's head. And heart. It depends on you if you want that or not.

POSITIVES:
- A lot of good art and music
- Escape rooms are really cool
- I liked experiments with giving characters "voices"
- Insight into developer's way of thought and ocean of repressed emotions

NEGATIVES:
- It's still listening to someone's vent. If that's not your thing - you won't like EP3
- Choices are mostly meaningless and only exist to give you an achievement and troll you a bit
- Laughable excuse for a plot, that rips and tears everything established prior to it
- The Edge
- Too much 4th wall breaking (is it hip to do this sort of stuff nowadays or what? It kind of worked in Undertale, it kind of worked in OneShot, but i couldn't care less about characters that tell the player they know they are in a game when it's this blatant. Seriously, i'm not 8, i understand perfectly that these are just ones and zeros coded by the dev, and my suspension of disbelief in this whole story just falls apart. Especialy considering most of those characters weren't endearing to begin with. The idea with Seth was so perfect, because the game doesn't talk to you directly, it talks to Seth, a character within the universe, that you just so happen to play as. Sadly, it got dismissed already at the end of EP2)

So, yeah... So much for a positive review, eh? But take it as you wish. I came to chinese restaurant to have some chinese food and i've got a cheeseburger. It was a pretty tasty cheeseburger, but i wanted chinese food regardless. And then the waiter screams at you and throws you out, shouting something about entertainment industry.

Such a wacky dude.
